2019 ANALYSIS

Many high school teams would look at their key losses in personnel and think it must be a rebuilding year. That’s not the case for the Hagerstown Tigers to return several players from last year’s 9 – 3 team. Before we get to those returners let’s take a look at the players Hagerstown graduated. RB Mason Hicks ran for over 1,000 yards and scored 13 touchdowns…Cody Swimm led the team in receiving and sacks….Ryan Golliher was a monster on defense leading the team in total tackles, solo tackles and assists…. Jake Combs was second on the team in total tackles, solo tackles and assists. Clay Cochran was in all – around player on both sides of the football… Grant Vinson led the team in interceptions and Zach Sherrow was another senior leader. That is a lot of talent to replace. But, as we said there is plenty left in the cupboard.

Hagerstown hasn’t found a way to get past Indianapolis Lutheran in the sectional for the past three seasons. The good news is they are no longer in the same sectional with the Saints this season. Lutheran will now compete in sectional 46 while the Tigers will be in sectional 47 with Lincoln, Knightstown, Milan, North Decatur, Oldenburg Academy, South Decatur and Tri. Knightstown was the co—champions with the Tigers in the TEC last season.

Hagerstown’s offense will be led by junior quarterback Noah Snodgrass who threw for over 1000 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2018. Snodgrass led a balanced attack averaging over 270 yards passing and 146 yards on the ground. Snodgrass not only has the ability to throw the football but also gained nearly 300 yards on the ground.

Replacing running back Mason Hicks will not be easy. Look for Camden Rhoades, Collin Romack, Sam Houck and Jaylon Favorite to fill the void. Coach Snodgrass may even use the backup quarterback Dom Anderson in the backfield.

Catching the football will be Brady McMillan, Favorite and Braden Himelick.

One area of surplus for the Tigers will be on both sides of the line. Luke Coffman, Jadon Locke, Colten Griffin, Cade Johnson, Jon Monaghan and Jaron Baker are expected to be the starter’s in the opening game against Centerville. Depth will not be an issue.

On defense, the Tigers have six starters returning including All-State performer Jadon Locke upfront along with Collin Romack on the edge. Matt Brown returns after recording three sacks in 2018. Losing Ryan Golliher and Jake Combs will be hard to replace on Hagerstown’s defense so Coach Snodgrass will rely on Dom Anderson and Cade Johnson as the primary linebackers. Brady McMillan and Camden Rhoades provide leadership and experience in the secondary.

Though the Tigers lost a talented senior class they are confident the returning players have that winning pedigree. Hagerstown’s opening game against Knightstown on August 23 and their rivalry matchup against Centerville August 30 will give the coaching staff a great idea of where they are early in the season. There is no reason to believe the Tigers won’t be in the mix for another TEC championship by seasons end.
