2019 ANALYSIS

The Golden Eagles have a bevy of experience returning from last year’s 0 – 10 team. They are hoping that experience will result in more wins this season. Generating more offense will be the key for Coach Renforth. Lincoln scored over 20 points just once last season and that was a double overtime loss to Winchester 42 – 40. This offense averaged only 138 yards on the ground and 84 yards through the air over 10 games. The good news is Lincoln returns quarterback’s Jacob Ervin and Alex Bertsch. Ervin through for 481 yards and two touchdowns, but also through nine picks. Bertsch added 291 yards through the air and four touchdowns in limited action.

The running game is in the capable hands of Alex Hokey. Hokey is hoping to have a healthy 2019 campaign after rushing for 637 yards and nine scores last season. Hokey has battled injuries that limited his carries. Coach Renforth will also implement Josh Miles and Shawn Suttles in the running attack.

Whomever the quarterback is they will have three reliable targets in Mason Dick, Evan Roettger and tight end Darian Bishop.

The O-Line returns senior center Tyler Reisert and sophomore guard Cooper Flockhart. Look for Addison Grimes, Noah Payne, Cameron Gumm and Parker Frost to battle for the other starting positions up front.

With the offense struggling in 2018 it put more pressure on the Golden Eagles defense. Many times they were put in difficult situations regarding field position. Lincoln gave up nearly 200 yards rushing and 120 yards passing per contest. Coach Renforth will count on Cameron Gumm and Parker Frost returning upfront. The linebacking corps could be the strength of the defense led by Alex Hokey, Cooper Flockhart and Josh Miles. Finding a way to replace Nick Anderson will not be easy after he led Lincoln in tackles with 104 and 22 tackles for loss.

The secondary returns to veterans in Jacob Ervin and Alex Bertsch. Hokey led the Golden Eagles in interceptions with two out of his linebacker position.

Lincoln hasn’t seen a winning football season since 2012. They have won only two games in the last three seasons. That could change with a little bit of luck and if they can stay healthy this season. Establishing a starting quarterback early and keeping Hokey in the lineup will make Lincoln’s offense much more dangerous this season. The Golden Eagles will play Centerville and Union County at home in their first two games and that will give the coaching staff a good barometer of where progress has been made and what work has to be done when the season gets into September.
