2019 ANALYSIS

Union County’s offense will have a different look in 2019, but will implement the same offensive philosophy… throw the football. Head Coach Joel Hofmann will move last year’s starting quarterback Mason Wicker to running back and start Junior Zach Hill a transfer from Richmond. Wicker led the Patriots in passing and rushing in 2019, but now with Hill running the offense the Patriots will have a more balanced attack. Hill through four 733 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore for the Red Devils in 2018. He has a big arm and is capable of stretching opposing defenses in the spread – multi scheme. Wicker could be one of the top running backs in the TEC now the that will be his main responsibility this season. Union County lost several key players from last year’s 5 – 5 squad including receiver Ryan Hensley, running back Chase Thompson and running back Tucker Coffman. Coach Hofmann most also find a way to replace lineman Tyler Osborne, Mason Whitsell and Ethan Curry.

Helping Hill and Wicker on offense will be sophomore Blake Richards, receiver’s Jaden Bias and Derek Grissom as well as sophomore tight ends Reese Watterson and Noah Taylor. All will figure prominently in Union County’s passing attack. Upfront the Patriots will rely on senior linemen center Nate Sams and tackle Joe Agnew. Coach Hofmann will look to fill the other three line spots early in the fall.

On defense the Patriots saw the good, the bad and the ugly in 2018. Union County gave up over 200 yards rushing in their 4 – 3 defense, wide had shutouts against Lincoln and the defending TEC champions Hagerstown. In other outings they gave up 34 and 40 points to Knightstown, 38 against Monroe Central and 27 against Centerville. Finding a way to stay more consistent on defense will be one of the keys for the Patriots in 2019. Upfront Union County will count on Noah Taylor, Nate Sams and Jaden Bias. Wicker will do double duty as the middle linebacker along with Reese Waterson on the outside.

Derek Grissom is a three – year starter in the secondary and will be joined by Blake Richards as the two most experienced players in the defensive backfield.

The Patriots have been a .500 team over the last two seasons. They showed the TEC that they can compete at a high level after shutting out Hagerstown last season 14 – 0. But after getting off to a 4 – 2 start, the Patriots lost three out of their last four including that shutout loss to Knightstown in the sectional tournament.

There are several holes to be filled including the offensive line, receiver and the secondary. Coach Hofmann will benefit greatly on offense with Hill throwing the football and Wicker now delegated as the top running back. It will be interesting early to see how the Patriots respond to the new faces on both sides of the football. Union County will open at home against Northeastern and then hit the road against Lincoln and Knightstown in weeks two and three. The coaching staff will learn a lot about their team in those first three weeks.
