BALL STATE RELEASE

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Ball State men’s basketball team will open the 2018 Charleston Classic on Thursday, Nov. 15 against 2017 NCAA Tournament team Virginia Tech. ESPN Events announced the tournament bracket Wednesday.
The Cardinals and Hokies will play the first game of the tournament at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN2 from TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.
The other first-round matchup in Ball State’s half of the draw features Alabama and Northeastern. In the other half of the bracket, Purdue will face Appalachian State while Wichita State will meet Davidson.
Virginia Tech returns seven of its top eight scorers from a year ago and checks in at No. 14 in ESPN.com’s Way-Too-Early Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Hokies lost to Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Five of the teams in Charleston were among last year’s NCAA field.
Ball State has averaged 20 wins over the past three seasons under head coach James Whitford. The Cardinals are led by returning all-conference players Tayler Persons in the backcourt and Trey Moses in the middle.
The Charleston Classic features 12 games over four days, with an off-day for each team Saturday. The majority of the games will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
