BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana junior right-handed pitcher Jonathan Stiever was selected by the Chicago White Sox in fifth round and the 138th overall pick of the 2018 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon.

Stiever becomes the 91st all-time draft pick at IU. He is just the sixth pitcher in program history to be drafted in the top five rounds (first since Aaron Slegers in 2013) and the 16th overall player to be picked in the top five rounds. He is IU’s highest draft pick since Kyle Schwarber (Round 1, 4th overall) in 2014.

Indiana has now had 21 players selected in the last six years, with 13 of them being picked during Chris Lemonis’ tenure.

Stiever paced the Big Ten in 2018 in strikeouts (97) and strikeouts looking (37) and was second in innings (100.1). His 12-strikeout performance on March 10 vs. Pacific tied for a Big Ten season-high.

The 2018 MLB Draft continues on Tuesday as rounds 3-10 are selected. It will come to a close on Wednesday as rounds 11-40 are announced.
