OPENING TIP

Indiana University is in its 121st season of competition in men’s basketball and will be the No. 10 seed in the 2021 Big Ten Tournament and will face #7 Rutgers in the second round.  The winner will play #2 Illinois on Friday night.  IU has lost 5 in a row and fell to Rutgers 74-70 in Bloomington on January 24 and 74-63 in New Jersey on February 24.

COACH ARCHIE MILLER

Indiana Coach Archie Miller is in his fourth season of guiding the Cream and Crimson and is 67-57 with the Hoosiers and earned career win 200 against Penn State. He is 206-120 in 9+ years as a head coach, which includes 6 years at the University of Dayton. His Flyer teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his last four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2014.

JACKSON-DAVIS NAMED ALL-AMERICAN, ALL-BIG TEN

Sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis has been named third team All-American by The Sporting News and first team All-Big Ten in a vote by the media and AP and second team All-Big Ten by the league’s coaches.  He is the first Hoosier to be named All-American and first team All-Big Ten since Yogi Ferrell was honored in 2016. He is the 46th player in IU history to be named an All-American.  The Greenwood, Indiana native and former Mr. Indiana Basketball (2019) at Center Grove High School is fourth in the Big Ten in scoring (19.1), second in rebounding (9.0), fifth in field goal percentage (51.5) and blocked shots (1.4) and is third in minutes played (34.2).  In league games only, he finished third in scoring (18.4), second in rebounding (9.2), fourth in field goal percentage (50.6) and minutes played blocked shots (1.4) and is third in minutes played (34.2).  He also is third in the nation in free throws made (147) and first in attempts (222).  He also has had 10 double-doubles this season and 22 in his career.  He is the only Hoosier in the last 25 years to post three 25-point, 15 rebound games in his career (Nebraska, at Minnesota, at Florida State.  He is a finalist for the Karl Malone Award given to the nation’s top power forward, and the Wooden Award.

ODDS AND TRENDS

The Hoosiers are 5-0 in Indianapolis under Archie Miller and 81-25 overall in the state capitol,  including a 68-60 win over Butler in the 2020 Crossroads Classic.  In the last game played in the 2020 season, the Hoosiers topped Nebraska, 89-64, in the Big Ten Tournament.  IU has played in 5 overtime games this season (2-3), the most since they played 6 in 1998-99.  The Hoosiers made 18 of 34 three-pointers (52.9) against Rutgers this year, but still shot 39.3% against them this season. IU held a 23-8 lead in the second meeting this season with 8:42 left in the first half.  In the Big Ten Tournament in 2018, the Hoosiers built a 16-point first half lead against the Scarlet Knights before falling.  In that game, then-freshman Aljami Durham was 10-for-10 from the free throw line which took place in Madison Square Garden. IU played Gonzaga on December 6, 2008, the first basketball game ever in Lucas Oil Stadium.  Gonzaga won, 70-54.  IU Coach Archie Miller coached in the second game that day in Lucas Oil Stadium as an assistant at Ohio State when they took on Notre Dame.  This is the first game in a domed stadium since playing Kentucky on March 23, 2012 in the Georgia Dome in the 2012 NCAA South Regionals.  IU leads the Big Ten in free throw attempts per game at 23.2 and is third in free throws made per game at 15.8 per game.  In 3 career games in his hometown of Indianapolis, sophomore Armaan Franklin is averaging 16.7 points and has made 12 of 17 3-pointers.
