Dallas lost its opener Sunday night at the Rams, 20-17. Since the start of last season, the Cowboys are 1-7 (.125) in one-score games (second worst in NFL; Bengals, 0-9) compared to 7-2 (.778) in games decided by nine or more points (t-sixth best in NFL).

The Falcons are 0-1 for a third straight year after Sunday’s 38-25 home loss to Seattle — the most points allowed in their season opener since 1987 at Tampa Bay (48-10 loss). The Falcons dropped to 12-2 all-time when gaining 500+ total yards (504), with the only other loss coming last year versus Seattle as well (510).

Dak Prescott hasn’t been intercepted in his last 223 pass attempts going back to last November, the longest streak in Cowboys history. Troy Aikman held the previous mark at 216 passes in 1999.

Dallas had an NFL-best +81 scoring differential in the fourth quarter last season, while Atlanta ranked fourth at +54. They were the only two teams ranking in the top 10 of the category that did not reach the playoffs.

The 49ers blew an early 10-point lead in falling to Arizona at home last week, 24-20. San Francisco’s 180 rushing yards allowed were its most in a game since Week 7 of the 2017 season against Dallas (265 yards).

The Jets managed just 254 total yards in their 27-17 Week 1 loss to the Bills, with 52 coming on the ground. In 2019 they ranked last in the NFL in total yards per game (273.0) and next-to-last in rushing (78.6; Dolphins, 72.3).

Sam Darnold is 4-3 in seven career starts against NFC teams, with 14 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 95.7 passer rating. In 20 starts versus AFC opponents, Darnold is 7-13 with 23 TD, 23 interceptions and a 76.0 rating.

Raheem Mostert had a career-long 76-yard reception for a touchdown in last week’s loss to Arizona, his seventh straight regular season game with a touchdown. That’s the longest active streak in the NFL, and the longest by a 49er since Terrell Owens scored in eight straight games in 1998.

After converting 45.0 percent of their third downs last season (fifth best in NFL), the 49ers were just 2-for-11 on third down against Arizona. That was tied for the worst third-down performance in Week 1, with Chicago.

FINALLY:

The Broncos have won four of the last five games against the Steelers, including two playoff wins (2011 Wild Card game, 2015 Divisional Round). Four of those five games were decided by seven points or less.

Denver lost its first game of the year, 16-14 to the Titans, on a Stephen Gostkowski field goal with 17 seconds remaining. It was the Broncos’ fourth loss by two points or fewer since the start of 2019, most in the NFL. No other team has more than two such losses in that span.

The Steelers defeated the Giants in Week 1, 26-16, while holding them to just 1.45 yards per rush. It was only the third time in the last 25 years that Pittsburgh has held its opponent under 1.50 yards per rush (minimum 20 attempts).

Melvin Gordon III had 78 rush yards and a touchdown in his Broncos debut, becoming the second player with 75+ rush yards and a rush TD in his first game with the team (Joe Dudek, 1987). He also lost a fumble, his fourth since the start of 2019, tied for the most by a running back (Chris Carson, Nick Chubb).

Benny Snell Jr. led the Steelers with 113 yards on 19 carries against the Giants. Since his debut last season, the Steelers are 5-1 when Snell plays and has 10 or more carries but just 2-6 when he does not.

The Broncos had 10 players with at least one reception in Week 1, their fourth consecutive season doing so at least once (five total games). They are one of three teams with five such games since the start of 2017, along with the Buccaneers (seven) and Ravens (six).

These teams split their two meetings in 2019, with the Buccaneers winning in Week 2 in Charlotte (20-14) and the Panthers coming out on top in Week 6 in London, 37-26. Carolina matched a franchise record with seven takeaways in the London game, including five interceptions of Jameis Winston.

Carolina’s 34-30 loss to the Raiders in Week 1 extended its losing streak to nine games, tied for second longest in team history (15 straight spanning the 2001 and 2002 seasons). The Panthers have allowed 30 or more points in five straight games, and 20+ points in 13 straight — both franchise records.

Tampa Bay had three turnovers in last week’s 34-23 loss in New Orleans, and has an NFL-high 44 giveaways since the start of last season (the Panthers are tied for second most with 35). The Buccaneers haven’t opened 0-2 in a season since losing their first three games in 2014.

Last week’s game was Tom Brady’s first with multiple interceptions since the 2018 AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs (won in OT). His third-quarter interception was returned for a touchdown by Janoris Jenkins, Brady’s third straight game with a pick-six (including postseason).

Christian McCaffrey rushed for just 68 yards on 38 carries (1.8 ypc) in last year’s two games against Tampa Bay, which had the NFL’s top rush defense in 2019 (73.8 ypg). The two games were also the only two since the start of last season in which McCaffrey failed to reach 90 scrimmage yards (53 and 57 in the two games).

Tampa Bay has an NFL-high 142 penalties since the start of last season (nine in Week 1), while the Panthers’ 92 penalties over the same span (five in Week 1) are the second fewest in the league (Colts, 84).

FINALLY:

Washington has won 10 of the last 12 meetings between these teams, including each of the last two in 2017 and 2018. The starting quarterbacks in the 2018 game in Arizona — a 24-6 Washington win in Week 1 — were Alex Smith and Sam Bradford.

Washington overcame an early 17-0 deficit to defeat the Eagles at home last week, 27-17. They will look to open 2-0 for the first time since 2011; among current franchises, the only teams to go longer without a 2-0 start are the Browns (last done in 1993), Titans (2008) and Colts (2009).

Arizona had lost four straight season openers before Sunday’s 24-20 win at San Francisco. It was the Cardinals’ ninth game since the start of last season decided by six or fewer points (4-4-1 record), tied for second most in the NFL (Lions, 10).

DeAndre Hopkins had a career-high 14 receptions for 151 yards in Week 1. That’s tied for the most receptions in NFL history by a player in his debut with a team; Jamison Crowder also had 14 in his debut with the Jets last season.

Dwayne Haskins Jr. threw four interceptions in 22 attempts in his first two games last year, both off the bench. In his eight starts since then he’s been intercepted just three times in 212 attempts, with none in his last three games.

The Cardinals are 5-1 over the last two seasons when gaining 400 or more net yards (as they did last week), versus 1-10-1 when not. Their 29 first downs in Week 1 were their most in any game since Week 13 of the 2015 season at St. Louis (also 29).

FINALLY:

The Chiefs have won 15 of their last 16 AFC West games, with the only defeat coming at home against the Chargers on December 13, 2018 — by one point. That victory is the only one for the Chargers in the last 12 meetings between the two sides.

After starting last season 6-4, Kansas City has won 10 straight games, regular season and playoffs. The streak began last November with a win over the Chargers in Mexico City. Each of the last seven victories has come by a double-digit margin; since 2000, only the 2007 Patriots (eight games) have had a longer streak of wins by 10 or more points.

Los Angeles’ 16-13 win at Cincinnati last week was just the third victory for the team since 2007 in a regular-season or postseason game in which they scored fewer than 17 points. The Chargers had dropped 36 of their previous 38 games when failing to reach 17 points.

First-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 138 yards in his NFL debut, Thursday’s victory over Houston. It was the most rushing yards in the NFL in Week 1, and Edwards-Helaire was the third player ever to rush for at least 100 yards in a Chiefs debut (Kareem Hunt — 148 in 2017; Christian Okoye — 105 in 1987).

Fourth-year man Austin Ekeler rushed for 84 yards in Week 1 — second most in his career — and is now 45 yards short of 1500 for his career. He would become the fourth player to compile 1500 rushing yards and 1500 receiving yards since 2017, joining Todd Gurley II, Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, who turns 25 on Thursday, has already won an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl MVP. Chargers signal-caller Tyrod Taylor is 31 years old and is playing for his fourth NFL team. Among quarterbacks with at least 1000 career pass attempts, Taylor has the second-lowest interception percentage at 1.44; Mahomes is third at 1.59.

FINALLY:

The Patriots and Seahawks have met just once since New England defeated Seattle in Super Bowl 49, a 31-24 win for the Seahawks at Foxborough in 2016. This will be the first game in NFL history in which both teams will have a head coach aged 68 or older (Pete Carroll, 69 and Bill Belichick, 68).

The Patriots defeated the Dolphins, 21-11, at home in Week 1 avenging their Week 17 loss from last season. New England has won eight straight games against the NFC, including its Super Bowl 53 win over Los Angeles, dating back to a loss to Detroit in Week 3 of 2018.

The Seahawks won at Atlanta, 38-25, in Week 1, despite allowing 506 yards of total offense to the Falcons. That was the fourth game since 2015 in which the Seahawks have allowed 500+ total net yards and still won (4-0). No team in the NFL has more than two such wins over that span and only Tennessee (1-0) has also not lost such a game.

Cam Newton passed for just 155 yards in his Patriots debut but he also led the team with 75 yards rushing on a game-high 15 carries. Newton has been his team’s leading rusher 36 times in his career, tied with Randall Cunningham for the most such games by quarterback in the Super Bowl Era (since 1966).

Russell Wilson completed 31 of 35 passes (88.6 percent) for 322 yards and four touchdowns and a 143.1 rating. Since the start of 2018, Wilson has a passer rating of 110.0 which ranks third in the NFL behind Drew Brees (115.3) and Patrick Mahomes (110.4; minimum 300 attempts).

Six Patriots rushed for 20 or more yards against Miami, including quarterback Cam Newton, wide receiver Julian Edelman and four different running backs. The last time a team had six or more players rush for 20+ yards in the same game was the 1986 Bears on December 7 versus Tampa Bay.
