Kaleb Wesson, a junior center, was named 2020 Second Team All-Big Ten by the league coaches and media Monday. Wesson lead the Buckeyes in both scoring (14.0 ppg.) and rebounding (9.3 rpg.) during his junior season. Danny Hummer, who is currently working on a graduate degree at Ohio State and senior on the 2019-20 roster, was named Ohio State’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Ohio State defeated three 2019-20 conference champions during non-conference play and another in league play this season. The Buckeyes opened the season downing Cincinnati, the American Athletic Conference co-champion (13-5), then knocked off Big East co-champion Villanova (13-5) followed by SEC outright winner Kentucky (15-3). Ohio State also split with Big Ten co-champion Maryland (14-6).

The Buckeyes are 1,164-418 all-time when playing in the state of Ohio (.736) … against Ohio teams, Ohio State is 237-79 (.749) all-time, regardless of location. The Buckeyes faced a pair of intrastate foes this season. Ohio State defeated Cincinnati Nov. 6 at Value City Arena (64-56) and then Kent State Nov. 25 at St. John Arena (W, 72-51). Ohio State is 179-30 vs. Ohio teams in Columbus (.856). The Buckeyes are 89-138 all-time when playing in the state of Indiana (.392). The last win was vs. Indiana in Bloomington, 55-52, Feb. 10, 2019. During Big Ten Conference Tournament play, Ohio State is 15-7 when playing in Indianapolis at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Andre and Kaleb Wesson are one of 16 sets of brothers playing on the same team in NCAA Division I this season and one of two sets in the Big Ten (Iowa, McCaffery) also have siblings on the roster.

Ohio State has 58 players all-time with 1,000 or more career points, the ninth-most nationally and the most of any Big Ten school (research credit: Duke). Kaleb Wesson is the most recent Buckeye to reach the milestone with 1,240 career points over his career. He became the 37th Ohio State player all-time to reach 500 rebounds with nine vs. West Virginia Dec. 29. His 14 points vs. Michigan March 1 moved him over the 1,200-point mark.

Off the Bench

The Ohio State Department of Athletics and the men’s basketball program recognized the 1960 National Championship Team at halftime of the game vs. Illinois March 5. That team finished the year with a 25-3 record and a 13-1 record in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes defeated California in the national championship game 75-55 at the Final Four in San Francisco March 19, 1960.

Three current Buckeyes were named Mr. Basketball in their respective states. Junior Kaleb Wesson was named Ohio Mr. Basketball as a senior at Westerville South High School … freshman D.J. Carton was named Mr. Basketball in Iowa in 2019 as a senior at Bettendorf High School and freshman E.J. Liddell was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in both 2018 and 2019 after leading Belleville High School to back-to-back state titles.

In the first NCAA NET rankings of the year, released Dec. 16, 2019, Ohio State was rated the No. 1 team nationally after its 9-1 start. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 in the first NET rankings a year ago as well. This year Ohio State has played 14 Quad 1 games (5-9) and eight Quad 2 games (7-1).

When the then-No. 5 Buckeyes tipped vs. the No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats Dec. 21 in Las Vegas, the Wesson family reached 300 games played as Buckeyes. Keith Wesson, who lettered for Ohio State from 1983-87, played in 115 games. Senior Andre Wesson has appeared in 127 games while junior Kaleb Wesson has taken the court as a Buckeye 96 times. In 338 games played, the Wessons have scored 2,324 points for an average of 6.9 a game. Andre passed Keith in total games played at Northwestern Jan. 28.

In three seasons as Ohio State head coach, Chris Holtmann teams have made 10 or more 3s 26 times (20-6 rcd.). Ohio State made 10+ from distance five times in 2017-18 and posted a 4-1 record in those games. The Buckeyes were 5-5 in 2018-19 and are 11-0 this year when make 10+ 3-pointers.

The Buckeyes ended with a 9-3 record over the final 12 games of the Big Ten regular season, tied for the best finish in the league with Wisconsin and Maryland.

Ohio State Big Ten Tournament History
The No. 7 seed in the 2020 Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes are 27-15 all-time in BTT play since the event began in 1998. Ohio State has won 24 of its last 35 league tournament games, including 16 of the last 23. By seed, Ohio State is 11-2 as No. 1, 3-1 as No. 2, 2-1 as No. 3, 4-3 as No. 5, 2-2 as No. 6, 1-1 as No. 7, 4-2 as No. 8, 0-1 as No. 9 and 0-2 as No. 11. Ohio State has entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed five times (2000, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011). The Buckeyes have four titles (2007, 2010, 2011, 2013) and eight title game appearances (2003, 2006, 2009, 2012). Ohio State, 13-6 in BTT openers, has been seeded higher in 25 BTT games all-time and are 21-4 in those games. As the lower seed, the Buckeyes are 6-11 all-time. Nine of the Buckeyes’ opening games in the last 15 years have been decided by six or fewer points. Ohio State is 8-1 in those games.

Kaleb Wesson Welcomed to Exclusive Club
Ohio State junior Kaleb Wesson has entered both the 1,000 career point and 500 career rebound club with 1,240 points and 672 boards. Wesson became the 29th Buckeye all-time with both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.

The Ohio State vs. Purdue Series
Purdue leads the all-time series with Ohio State 88-85. The Buckeyes are 55-30 in Columbus and 27-57 in West Lafayette. The teams have met four times on neutral courts with the Buckeyes winning three. When ranked among the Associated Press Top 25, Ohio State is 28-7 vs. the Boilermakers. Andre Wesson has faced Purdue five times, most on the Ohio State roster. He averages 9.8 points and three rebounds in the series.

Scouting the Boilermakers
Purdue takes on the Buckeyes with an overall record of 16-15. Two Boilermakers average in double figures, led by sophomore center Trevion William’s 11.5 points a game. Sophomore guard Eric Hunter (10.6 ppg.) also scores in double figures. Williams also leads the team in rebounding with 7.6 boards a game.

Ohio State vs. the Big Ten
The Buckeyes own an overall record of 837-739 against current league members. Chris Holtmann faced six league opponents during his six years as a head coach prior to taking over for the Buckeyes in 2017-18. He entered his first year of Big Ten competition with a 4-5 record vs. conference foes. He is 39-33 vs. conference opponents in nine years as a head coach.
