Chiefs cut Hunt after running back lands on NFL exempt list

The Kansas City Chiefs released running back Kareem Hunt on Friday night after video surfaced that showed the NFL’s reigning rushing champion knocking over and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel hallway in February.

The team issued a statement shortly after the NFL had placed Hunt on its Commissioner Exemption List that said the running back lied when asked about the incident by team officials. The team said “the video today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately.”

Hunt was at the Chiefs’ facility earlier Friday in preparation for Sunday’s trip to Oakland, but he was excused and sent home shortly after TMZ posted the video online. It shows Hunt being restrained several times by friends before pushing a woman to the ground, where he proceeds to kick her.

Police were called to the scene during the Feb. 10 incident, no charges were filed. The police did not respond to several requests for comment Friday night.

“Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt. At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue,” the Chiefs said. “As part of our internal discussions with Kareem, several members of our management team spoke directly to him. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions.”

The Chiefs and the NFL have been aware of Hunt’s incident since it occurred, but much like the case involving former Ravens running back Ray Rice, the shocking video brought a new dimension to the case. It showed Hunt lunging toward a woman and several others in the hotel hallway, and the second-year pro being restrained several times before knocking two people down.

While no charges were filed from the altercation, two police reports were created. Hunt is listed as the suspect in one of them and a woman, Abigail Ottinger, is the suspect in the other one.

No. 10 Washington beats No. 17 Utah 10-3 for Pac-12 title

Byron Murphy returned a deflected interception 66 yards for the game’s only touchdown to lead No. 10 Washington to a 10-3 victory over No. 17 Utah in an offensively challenged Pac-12 championship game Friday night.

In a matchup of the two stingiest defenses in the conference, neither offense could get much of anything going at all. So it was only fitting that a dropped pass by Utah (9-4, No. 17 CFP) led to an interception for Washington (10-3, No. 11 CFP) and the only touchdown.

Both teams had been held to just one field goal when the Huskies broke through late in the third quarter.

Jason Shelley’s pass hit Siaosi Mariner in the hands inside the Washington 35. But Mariner couldn’t hold onto the pass and it ricocheted off his leg and into the hands of Murphy, who raced 66 yards for the score that made it 10-3.

Jordan Miller intercepted another pass from Shelley on the following drive and Murphy got his second interception of the game the next time Utah had the ball. The Huskies sealed the victory with a fourth-down stop in the final minute to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl.

The Huskies had four drives of at least 10 plays but got only one field goal out of those. They were stopped on a fourth-and-6 from the Utah 23 on the opening drive, threw an interception in Utah territory on the third drive and had a field goal blocked in the fourth quarter.

The one score came on Peyton Henry’s 29-yard field goal late in the first half. That was enough to give Washington a 3-0 lead at the break but the Utes tied it with a score on the opening possession of the third quarter when Matt Gay’s 53-yard field goal just cleared the cross bar.

Northern Illinois scores late to win MAC title game 30-29

Marcus Childers threw a touchdown pass – his fourth of the game – to D.J. Brown with 1:09 to go and Northern Illinois rallied from a 20-point, second-half deficit to take a 30-29 victory over Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference championship game on Friday night.

The 35-yard TD pass came on the eighth play of a 70-yard drive that took a little more than two minutes following a punt forced by Sutton Smith’s sack of Bulls quarterback Tyree Jackson.

NIU’s 2-point conversion failed and the Bulls (10-3) reached the Huskies’ 41-yard line before an incomplete pass on fourth down with 21 seconds left ended Buffalo’s hopes.

The Huskies’ touchdown completed a comeback from a 29-10 deficit in the third quarter. Childers threw a 28-yard score to Brown near the end of the third quarter and a 32-yarder to Spencer Tears with under 13 minutes left in the fourth. Childers also had a 13-yard TD pass to Tears in the first half. Childers completed 21 of 33 passes for 300 yards with an interception and led the team with 58 yards rushing.

Jackson was 18-of-35 passing for 252 yards and two touchdown passes to Anthony Johnson, who had 124 yards receiving on seven catches. Kevin Marks and Jaret Patterson ran for touchdowns. Buffalo missed a PAT after their second TD.

The Bulls have never beaten NIU in a MAC game since joining the league in 1999, going 0-12. A lone win over the Huskies came in 1968. The Huskies (8-5) have won four title games, the Bulls one.

Houston DT Oliver skipping bowl game, ending college career

Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver said in a Twitter post that he would not play in the Cougars’ bowl game, ending his college football career.

Oliver, a junior, announced in March this would be is last college season and he would enter the 2019 NFL draft. He is expected to be a first-round pick, possibly one of the first players selected.

Oliver played well at the beginning of this season, but missed four games in the second half with a sore right. He played last week in the regular-season finale against Memphis, but aggravated the injury. He told reporters after he intended to play in Houston’s bowl.

Oliver was a first-team All-America as a freshman and second-team last year. He finishes with 54 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks.

Chargers RB Gordon, LB Mebane out for key game vs. Steelers

Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon and linebacker Brandon Mebane have been ruled out for Sunday night’s key AFC showdown in Pittsburgh.

Neither player has practiced this week.

Gordon, who is sixth in the NFL in rushing, sprained the MCL in his right knee during Sunday’s 45-10 win over Arizona. Austin Ekeler is expected to get the start in place of Gordon.

Mebane will miss his second straight game while dealing with what coach Anthony Lynn says is a family issue. Mebane is fifth on the team in tackles (43) and has one sack. Damion Square is likely to get the start.

Los Angeles (8-3) has also listed wide receiver Tyrell Williams (quad) and offensive tackle Joe Barksdale (non-injury related) as questionable.

Sore knee to keep Oladipo out of Pacers’ lineup indefinitely

Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo will be out indefinitely as he tries to recover from a sore right knee.

Oladipo already has missed six straight games with the injury and the Pacers are 3-3 without him. Indiana finishes a four-game road trip Saturday at Sacramento.

The former Indiana University star leads the team in scoring with 21.4 points per game and steals at 1.56. He’s also second on the Pacers in assists (4.7) and rebounds (6.6) after winning the NBA’s steals title last season.

Free-agent acquisition Tyreke Evans will likely continue to replace Oladipo in the starting lineup. Evans averages 10.5 points.

The Pacers have not provided additional details about Oladipo’s injury.

Wizards’ Howard out 2-3 months after spinal surgery

Wizards center Dwight Howard is expected to miss two to three months after undergoing spinal surgery to relieve pain in his glutes.

The team announced Howard underwent a lumbar microdiscotemy Friday in California and would be re-evaluated in two to three months. Doctors determined a herniated disk was causing Howard’s gluteal pain and nerve irritation.

Howard had missed the last five games after aggravating the injury, which also caused him to sit out training camp and the first seven games of the season.

Washington signed Howard to an $11 million, two-year contract with a player option in the offseason. The 32-year-old is averaging 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds in nine games.

The Wizards are Howard’s fourth team in the past four seasons and sixth overall in his NBA career.

Indians trade All-Star Gomes to Nationals for prospects

Cleveland, which has discussed moving right-handers Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer and Carlos Carrasco in possible trades while restructuring its payroll, dealt All-Star catcher Yan Gomes to the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

In return, the three-time defending AL Central champions got outfielder Daniel Jonson, right-hander Jefry Rodriguez and a player to be named. Team president Chris Antonetti called Johnson and Rodriguez “upper-level prospects” who should be able to help the Indians in the next few seasons.

The Gomes deal is unlikely to be the last move this offseason by the Indians, who followed up another strong regular season stretch run with a disappointing performance against Houston in the AL Division Series. Cleveland got swept, and with its window for contention possibly closing, the team is looking to fill some holes in the outfield and bullpen.

Cleveland may have to move Kluber, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, or Bauer to find help. Antonetti would not comment on any potential deals involving the right-handers.

“We’re focused on trying to build a team that’s capable of winning another American League Central Division title in 2019 but is also positioned for success beyond that,” he said. “We’re in a fortunate position that we have a lot of players on our team that other teams value. And that leads to a lot of conversations this time of year. I wouldn’t want to get into any speculation around that.

Suspended shortstop Russell offered 2019 contract by Cubs

The Cubs offered suspended shortstop Addison Russell a 2019 contract while maintaining Friday his future with the team is not certain.

Russell is serving a 40-game domestic violence suspension following allegations by his ex-wife.

President of president of baseball operations Theo Epstein called the decision a “procedural step” and said it “does not represent the finish line nor rubber-stamp his future” with them.

“It does however reflect our support for him as long as he continues to make progress and demonstrates his commitment to these important issues,” Epstein added.

Teams had a deadline Friday to offer contracts to unsigned players on their 40-man rosters. Chicago failed to offer deals to infielder Ronald Torreyes, obtained from the Yankees this week, and also cut loose pitchers Justin Hancock and Allen Webster.

Russell accepted a 40-game suspension last October for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. The decision followed allegations made by his ex-wife Melisa Reidy. Though Russell has denied the allegations, he apologized to Reidy and his family for “my past behavior.”

Russell had a $3.2 million salary last season. His unpaid suspension includes the 11 regular-season games he missed after being placed on administrative leave Sept. 21. Russell will be eligible to return on May 3 against St. Louis, barring any postponements.

“Since accepting my suspension, I’ve had time to reflect on my past behavior and think about the next steps I need to take to grow as a person,” Russell said in a statement issued by the Cubs.

Russell said he will meet regularly with experts and counselors mandated by his treatment plan. He said he also plans to keep working with his own therapist, whom he has been seeing several times a week the past two months.

Wilson scores, is ejected as Capitals extend win streak to 7

Tom Wilson got back on the score sheet and put himself back under the microscope that has become a part of his existence in the NHL.

Wilson scored again before being ejected for a questionable hit and Nicklas Backstrom had a hat trick and four points in the Washington Capitals’ 6-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night that extended the defending Stanley Cup champions’ winning streak to seven games. Wilson had a short-handed goal and showed some of his best attributes as a power forward and penalty killer before getting kicked out of the game for a polarizing hit on Brett Seney that earned him a match penalty and at least another look from the league’s department of player safety.

“He’s huge for our team,” center Evgeny Kuznetsov said of Wilson. “You can see he’s playing well and he scored the goals, he make those dirty plays when you’ve got to battle for the puck, when you go in the corner. It’s not easy to play there, and he play unbelievable for us. That’s why he’s such a big piece for us.”

Wilson now has seven goals and 13 points in nine games since coming back from a lengthy suspension. He extended his career-best goal streak to five games and point streak to seven games and at the same time raised questions about whether he’s headed toward further discipline.

After Seney released the puck and it had gone into the corner late in the second period, Wilson skated up from behind and hit him with his left shoulder. Wilson was assessed a match penalty for an illegal check to the head, which carries with it an automatic suspension that the NHL must review but could decide to rescind.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NOTES

TEXAS VS. OKLAHOMA

  • This is the 17th edition of the Big 12 Championship Game, and each of the last 14 of those games has involved either Oklahoma or Texas. The last five games between these teams have all been decided by seven points or fewer — tied for the most such games between any two FBS opponents since the start of 2014.
  • Texas leads the FBS with six wins by seven points or fewer this season. It’s tied for the second most ever by a Big 12 team in a season, trailing only Kansas State’s eight in 2011.
  • Sam Ehlinger is one of five FBS quarterbacks with 20+ passing touchdowns and 10+ rushing touchdowns this season, a group that includes OU’s Kyler Murray. But Ehlinger is the only underclassman (freshman or sophomore) among the five.
  • Kyler Murray is on pace to be the first FBS player ever to average 300.0+ passing and 60.0+ rushing yards per game in a season. Murray also has a shot at joining Clemson’s Deshaun Watson (2015) as the only players in FBS history to pass for 4000 yards and rush for 1000 in a season.
  • OU is the first FBS team since 2010 to have three players rush for 10+ TDs in the same season (Murray, Kennedy Brooks, Trey Sermon). In 2010, both UCF (Jeff Godfrey, Latavius Murray, Ronnie Weaver) and Wisconsin (Montee Ball, John Clay, James White) had three players reach the mark.

ALABAMA VS. GEORGIA

  • Alabama and Georgia face off in a rematch of the 2017 CFP Championship Game, won by Alabama 26-23 in overtime. The Crimson Tide are making their 12th SEC Championship Game appearance, tying Florida for the most all-time, and can pass Florida for the most SEC CG wins all-time with a victory (both teams have seven).
  • Alabama has reached 12 wins for a fifth consecutive season, a modern-era record. Penn (seven straight from 1892-98) and Yale (five straight from 1888-92) had streaks of five-plus seasons in the 19th century.
  • Tua Tagovailoa was responsible for six touchdowns in Saturday’s 52-21 defeat of Auburn (five passing, one rushing), an Alabama single-game record. His five pass TD tied the school mark of Gary Hollingsworth, set in 1989 against Ole Miss.
  • Georgia has won five straight games — all by 17 or more points — following its October 13 loss at LSU. The Bulldogs are looking to become the first SEC East program to win back-to-back SEC titles since Tennessee turned the trick in 1997 and 1998.
  • Jake Fromm threw a career-high four touchdown passes in last week’s 45-21 win over Georgia Tech, giving him 24 on the season — matching his total from last season. Fromm is the second Georgia QB all-time with at least 24 pass TD in back-to-back seasons, joining Aaron Murray (four straight from 2010-13).

FRESNO STATE VS. BOISE STATE

  • Boise State leads this all-time series 15-6, including a 10-1 mark at home. Boise State hasn’t lost at home to Fresno State since 1984, winning the last 10. This is the second straight year Boise State and Fresno State are meeting twice (same for Memphis and UCF); prior to this year, no two FBS teams had met twice in back-to-back years since Boston College and Virginia Tech in 2007 and 2008.
  • Fresno State has held its last 23 opponents to 27 points or fewer. The last FBS team to have a streak longer than that was LSU, which had a 25-game streak from January 7, 2011, to November 10, 2012.
  • Marcus McMaryion has had nine games this season in which he threw for 200+ yards with no interceptions, most in the FBS. The last FBS QB to do so 10 times in a season was Marcus Mariota during his 2014 Heisman season (11).
  • The Broncos have won seven straight games, tied with Army West Point for the fifth-longest active streak in the FBS behind UCF (24), Alabama (14), Notre Dame (13) and Clemson (12).
  • Alexander Mattison has had at least 20 carries in nine straight games, the longest active streak in the FBS. He has accounted for 56.5 percent of Boise State’s rushes for the season, the second-highest percentage in the FBS behind Arizona State’s Eno Benjamin (59.7).

NORTHWESTERN VS. OHIO STATE

  • Ohio State is 24-1 (.960) against Northwestern dating back to 1980. That’s the fifth-best record by any FBS team against any opponent over that span (minimum 25 games), trailing only Michigan against Indiana (30-1, .968), Texas against Rice (27-1, .964), Alabama against Vanderbilt (26-1, .963) and Penn State against Temple (26-1, .963).
  • Northwestern finished the regular season 8-1 in the conference but 8-4 overall, which is very rare. The Wildcats are the first FBS team to finish the regular season with 8+ conference wins and zero non-conference wins since Michigan in 1982.
  • Freshman Isaiah Bowser became the Wildcats’ primary running back beginning on October 20, and since that date he has carried the ball 159 times — more than any other player in the FBS (freshman or otherwise).
  • Ohio State is averaging 543.9 total yards per game this season, on pace to shatter the Big Ten record of 512.7 set by Penn State in 1994.
  • Sophomore Dwayne Haskins has 42 TD passes this season. If he gets three more, he would be the first FBS underclassman (freshman or sophomore) to throw 45 in a season since Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford had 50 in 2008.

CLEMSON VS. PITTSBURGH

  • Pittsburgh is 2-0 all-time against Clemson and is the only current ACC team the Tigers have never beaten. Clemson is trying to become just the third FBS team ever to win a conference championship game in four straight years, along with Florida (1993-1996) and Marshall (1997-2000).
  • Clemson has won its last seven games by 20+ points. In the past 30 years, the only other ACC team to record seven straight 20+ point wins was Florida State in 2013 en route to the national title (nine straight).
  • Travis Etienne is averaging 8.0 yards per carry on 164 carries this year. He would be only the fourth Power 5 running back in the last 20 years to average 8.0+ yards per carry in a season (minimum 150 rushes), along with Reggie Bush (2005 USC), Jahvid Best (2008 Cal) and Bryce Love (2017 Stanford).
  • Kenny Pickett hasn’t thrown an interception in his last 132 pass attempts dating back to October 6. That’s the third-longest active streak in the FBS behind Iowa State’s Kyle Kempt (158) and Southern Miss’ Kwadra Griggs (135).
  • Qadree Ollison already has 1000 rushing yards this year and Darrin Hall is close with 935. They would be the first ACC running back duo to have 1000 rushing yards in the same season since North Carolina’s Curtis Johnson and Leon Johnson in 1993.
