LAST GAME VS. INDY TECH

KOKOMO TRIBUNE

INDIANAPOLIS — Kokomo’s boys basketball team had a frustrating road trip Thursday.

Despite shooting 50 percent from the floor and holding Hunter Jackson, a top player in the Class of 2020 in the state, to just one made field goal, the Wildkats could not get the job done in North Central Conference play at Arsenal Tech.

Jackson connected on 5 of 6 free throws in the final 31 seconds as the Titans (5-11, 3-4) squeezed out a 56-52 win.

“It’s hard and the kids just have got to keep it together,” Kokomo assistant coach Larry Nicks said. “Right now our main is to keep getting better until the sectionals. We were hoping to get a bit bigger of a lead on them and force them into some rushed shots in the second half, but we weren’t able to do that.”

Kokomo (7-12, 1-6 NCC) led for much of the game, but could never get ahead by more than six points. The Wildkats led 47-42 after an and-one 3-point play with 5:32 left in the game, but failed to score for almost five minutes until Bobby Wonnell scored on a drive with :35 left.

In that time Tech (5-11, 3-4) went on a critical 9-0 run to take a 51-47 lead. It was Jackson’s only field goal, a 3-pointer, that put the Titans in front for good with 2:21 left.

“The problem is that they had five more offensive rebounds than we did in the first half and we had five more turnovers than they did,” said Nicks. “That basically gave them 10 more possessions and I know they got some putbacks on those offensive rebounds. Those are the type of things that will come back to bite you.”

Kokomo had a few chances in the last 30 seconds to get the win. Jackson Richards connected on a 3-pointer to make it 53-52 Tech with :21 left. Jackson then had his only miss at the line as he split a pair to make it 54-52.

The Wildkats came down and got a good look at a corner 3 from Deonta Chamberlain, but it rimmed out with :07 left and Jackson secured the rebound. His final two free throws at :04.9 sealed the win.

“[Jackson] was going to get the ball in his hands down the stretch and the problem with that is that we couldn’t keep the ball out of his hands,” said Nicks. “If we could have kept the ball out of his hands we might have forced some of their other guys to make some plays but we weren’t able to do that.”

Making this game more frustrating for the Kats is that Kokomo led at every stop except the final one. Kokomo was up 14-10 after one and 24-23 at the half. They held a 39-36 lead entering the final period and six straight points from Wonnell on consecutive possessions had them in great shape leading 47-42, but they could not close the game out. Turnovers were the biggest difference as Kokomo had 13 to Tech’s five.

Wonnell led Kokomo with 13 points while Richards and Chamberlain each had 10. Chamberlain added seven rebounds.
