By Jan Clark The objective was to secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming North Central Conference tournament.  Mission accomplished for the Richmond girls volleyball team at the Tiernan Center Thursday by overpowering Anderson 25-16, 25-6, 25-7. The junior varsity advanced to 14-6 by winning 25-10, 25-11. The Red Devils pretty much had their own way against the Indians, who came in with 10 seniors on their roster. Set one was tied 8-8 until freshman Laurelai DePew reeled off seven straight service points and senior Zoee Woolridge pounded out a pair of kills at the end. Set two was all Richmond, the highlight being a DePew block at the 17-4 mark. Coach Matt Fisher got a glimpse of the future in set three when he went mainly with underclassmen. Freshman Ashley Clark had seven service points in a row early on and ended the lopsided set with one of three kills. "We have to stay together (in these remaining matches)," said senior Kierra Wright. "We're not a bad team. If we get down, we have to pick each other up." Molly Morken and Justice Mays led in aces with five, Woolridge in kills with seven, J'naya Thompson in digs with 10, Kierra Wright in assists with 10 and DePew in blocks with two. "We thought tonight was a night where we could get better and the girls played really well," Fisher said. "We're still young and we had to figure out what type of game to play to be effective. I think they figured it out and we were aggressive to the end." Fisher started three freshman in the last set with most of the upperclassmen watching from the sidelines. "On that last play we got a dig from a sophomore (Alison Juday), a set from a freshman (Lauren Uhte) to another freshman (Clark) for a kill. Hopefully there will be a lot more of that in the future." Now 9-14, Richmond returns to action Saturday, Sep. 29, with its own Invitational, headlined by New Palestine. Other area teams in the field are Union County and Franklin County.
