The holiday tournaments around the state of Indiana feature some of the beat teams and top players and Richmond’s Wettig Memorial/Holiday tournament will be no different. Before we get to the feature teams, I will be interested to see how the first round play out especially since five of the eight games feature home school or charter teams. Generally you don’t see the best teams in Lighthouse East, Illinois CRU, Indy Home School, Northwest Home School or Lighthouse South. Past experience in this tournament has shown those teams are bounced to the losers bracket early and the crowd doesn’t generally sprint to the box office to get tickets but let’s wait and see how this crop does before we judge this tournament for next season.

With that said there are some very good teams to watch and several talented players that could make this year’s tournament a lot of fun.

First off there are three marquee players to watch including Indiana recruit Armaan Franklin of Cathedral. Franklin is a 6’5″ guard and is considered one of the top five players in the state. Franklin is averaging 23.5ppg, 7.0rpg and 2.1spg. Also in this year’s tournament is Purdue commit Isaiah Thompson of Zionsville. Thompson is averaging 25ppg. Then there is Richmond’s Lucas Kroft who committed to Ball State. Kroft leads the Red Devils at 23.5ppg, 5.5rpg and 1.6bpg.

They aren’t the only ones to keep an eye on. Make sure to watch Seton’s Sam Brenneke (19ppg) and Jake Moynihan (12.6ppg).  Brenneke also averages 4.6apg and 2.8spg. The 6’5″ Moynihan averages a remarkable 14.6rpg and 4.4bpg. Guard Jaden Swiderek is a three point threat and averages 12.0ppg.

Bloomington South is 7-2 on the season and features 6’5″ forward Anthony Leal, one of the top forwards in the state. Point guard Noah Jager gives the Panthers a lethal 1-2 punch.

Connersville has been a staple at the Wettig and NOBODY wants to play them. Coach Kerry Brown is one of the top coaches in the state and always gets the most out of his players. Guard Noah Belt averages 20ppg and 6’7″ post Jacob Brown is vastly improved. Keep an eye on the Spartans.

Zionsville is an interesting team at 7-2. Yes, they feature Thompson, but they have the most size of anyone including 6’6″ Forward Nate Childress (16ppg), 6’9″ Center Hogan Orbaugh and 6’6″ Forward Brandon Vernon. And did I mention they have a 6’10” post that can come off the bench?

Greensburg is another team to keep an eye on at 7-0 on the season. Yes, there is another Welage, junior Forward Andrew. He is averaging 17.7ppg. Senior Guard Drew Comer also averages 17.6ppg. They are joined by Sophomore Guard Lane Sparks at 15.9. This will be a fun team to watch.

Franklin is 5-1 and they have balanced scoring. Guard Reece Thomson averages 15.8ppg, Forward Cory Richards scores 14.4 per game and Forward Drew Byerly is at 11.0ppg and 7.0rpg.

Richmond has more than Lucas Kroft. Sophomore Guard Andrew Kroft is the energy the Red Devils can count on each and every game. Andrew is averaging 14.4ppg, but what he does by diving on the floor, getting to lose balls and rebounding is priceless. Keep an eye also on guards Koream Jett and Jalen Hillard. The one player the Red Devils will need to take a next step is Forward Jordan Stolle.

Portage, like Connersville, is a staple in the Wettig. The Indians are 5-2 and gave state ranked Evansville Memorial everything they wanted before losing 66-55. Keep an eye out for Maurion Martin..a scoring machine for the Indians.

Here is a look at all the teams (and the info we could find) at this year’s tourney. Also included is the RADIOTROY.COM broadcast schedule for the three days.
