Atlanta Braves (86-71). One game behind the Mets and Diamondbacks, who hold the second and third wild-card positions. Open a three-game home series against Kansas City on Friday ahead of a makeup doubleheader vs. the Mets on Monday.

NL CENTRAL
Milwaukee Brewers (91-68). Clinched division title and locked into the No. 3 NL seed. Close the regular season with a three-game home series against the Mets beginning on Friday.

NL WEST

MLB ROUNDUP: A’S BID FAREWELL TO OAKLAND WITH WIN

J.T. Ginn recorded his first major league win, Mason Miller threw the Athletics’ final pitch in their Oakland Coliseum history, and the A’s completed their home schedule with a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday afternoon.

On a celebrity-filled day in which Rickey Henderson and Dave Stewart threw out ceremonial first pitches and Barry Zito sang the national anthem, A’s fans marked the historic event by recording the largest attendance — 46,889 — in major league history for a team playing its final game in its home city. The Montreal Expos held the previous mark of 31,395 in 2004.

The baseball gods shined on the hometown heroes, with Oakland’s three runs coming on an infield out, a sacrifice fly and a flyball lost in the sun. JJ Bleday was credited with two RBIs for the Athletics.

Adolis Garcia and Nathaniel Lowe had RBIs for the Rangers, who were out-hit 9-5.

Tigers 4, Rays 3

Colt Keith drove in two runs, Justyn-Henry Malloy knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and streaking Detroit rallied past visiting Tampa Bay.

Matt Vierling reached base three times and scored twice for the Tigers, who overcame a three-run deficit. The Tigers moved closer to an American League wild-card playoff berth with their fifth straight win.

Brandon Lowe drove in two runs for the Rays. Starter Tyler Alexander held the Tigers scoreless over the first five innings, striking out six without a walk.

Brewers 5, Pirates 2

Aaron Civale logged six scoreless innings as Milwaukee downed host Pittsburgh in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Civale (8-9) yielded three hits while walking one and striking out five. Joey Ortiz went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Brice Turang finished with two RBIs for the Brewers (91-68), who are one victory away from matching their win total from a season ago.

Bryan De La Cruz clubbed a two-run homer as the Pirates fell for the ninth time in their past 13 games. Mitch Keller (11-12) gave up three runs on six hits in five innings.

Royals 7, Nationals 4

Pinch hitter Adam Frazier delivered a tiebreaking two-run single in the top of the ninth as visiting Kansas City inched closer to a wild-card berth by completing a three-game sweep of Washington.

Hunter Renfroe hit a home run and Salvador Perez had two hits and an RBI for the Royals, whose magic number to clinch a playoff spot is two. Kris Bubic (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and Lucas Erceg tossed a perfect ninth to notch his 14th save.

Luis Garcia Jr. homered for Washington, which has lost four straight games and nine of its last 10. Kyle Finnegan (3-8) entered in the ninth and was tagged for three runs on two hits and three walks before being pulled with two outs.

White Sox 7, Angels 0

Andrew Vaughn and Lenyn Sosa both delivered two RBIs during a seven-run fifth inning and Chris Flexen pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings as host Chicago topped Los Angeles to earn a series sweep.

Chicago (39-120) again avoided surpassing the expansion 1962 New York Mets for the most single-season losses in Major League Baseball since 1901. A mark for futility fell upon the Angels, however, as Los Angeles (63-96) set a club record for losses in a season, breaking a tie with the 1968 and 1980 teams.

Chicago rolled behind its largest rally of the year. The White Sox sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth, which featured a pair of hits from Dominic Fletcher.

Rockies 10, Cardinals 8

Ryan McMahon hit a tiebreaking double in a five-run eighth inning, and Colorado used a two-out rally to beat St. Louis in Denver.

Charlie Blackmon homered and drove in three runs for the Rockies. Angel Chivilli (2-3) got the win, and Seth Halvorsen picked up his second save.

Lars Nootbaar and Paul Goldschmidt hit back-to-back home runs and Ivan Herrera and Pedro Pages also went deep for the Cardinals. Ryan Fernandez (1-6) took the loss.

SHORTER GAMES, MORE RUNNING, MORE ACTION. TWO YEARS IN, MLB’S RULE CHANGES HAVE PROVIDED A JOLT

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Two years ago, it looked as if Major League Baseball was having an existential crisis. To many inside the game, it certainly felt like one as a sport built on its timelessness careened toward a future hellbent on speeding things up.

Pitch clocks. Defensive shift bans. Bigger bases. Fewer throwovers. Ghost runners. Expanded playoffs designed to keep more teams in contention. All with the expressed purpose of getting the fans in the stands to put down their phones and the ones sitting at home from flipping to a channel where something — anything really — was actually happening.

Though the changes were working, there was trepidation. And with good reason.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts could feel baseball retreating into the mainstream background, and the metrics — from attendance to TV ratings on down — backed it up.

“I think that in the last 10 or 20 years, you know, football and basketball have taken market share,” he said.

The issue wasn’t the players, who are throwing it harder, hitting the ball farther and running faster than any previous generation. It was the game itself.

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy was in the midst of a three-year sabbatical in the early 2020s and would often find himself engaged in the same conversation over and over.

“‘Man, your game slowed down,’” Bochy would be told before adding that he agreed with the assessment “because I was watching them, too.”

Baseball rule changes having tangible impact

Nearly two seasons into MLB’s great experiment, the tide has turned.

The average game time has dropped to 2 hours, 36 minutes, the lowest since 1984. Attendance is up 11% since 2022. Viewership — particularly among fans 18-34 — has risen 10.5% since the changes were adopted. Youth participation is spiking. Baseball’s social media ecosystem is thriving.

The angst that accompanied MLB’s modernization has been replaced with something far different as the 2024 playoffs loom: legit buzz.

The best player on Roberts’ team, Shohei Ohtani — who also happens to be the best hitter on the planet — offered proof in Miami last week.

Six swings. Three home runs. Two stolen bases. A club-record 10 RBIs. The inaugural member of the 50/50 club. One iconic performance by Ohtani that broke barriers and social media along with it.

Yet maybe the most impressive number on the most remarkable night of Ohtani’s career — so far anyway — was Time of Game: 3 hours, 6 minutes. During that span the Dodgers and the Marlins managed to combine for 24 runs, 25 hits and 54 outs and sparked countless “did you see what Shohei did?” conversations.

“I don’t love all the rule changes, but they seem to be making the game more exciting for fans, which is why we play — for our fans,” Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said.

Fans enjoying watching more action, rising baseball stars

A fanbase that is growing younger seemingly in lockstep with the game’s bid to get faster.

According to MLB, the median age of ticket buyers has dropped five years (from 51 to 46) since 2019. The number of tickets sold to fans ages 18-34 has jumped 8.5% over that span. It helps that the games are getting shorter. Attendance at weeknight games is up 12% over 2022 per MLB, in part because fans aren’t as concerned they’re going to be out all night.

“To sit down and watch a game used to be just too much of a time commitment, right?” said Tate Conrad of Des Moines, Iowa, while taking in a game at between the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees in early September.

Now, not so much. And it’s not just that the games are shorter. There’s more happening, most notably on the base paths.

The decision to limit pickoffs has allowed base runners to go wild. There have been nearly 1,000 more stolen bases in 2024 than there were in 2022 heading into the final days of the regular season. Check your phone for a second and that runner on first might be standing on third by the time you look up.

“I just feel like the attention span of people is getting shorter and shorter,” Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jake McCarthy said. “So I just think when you turn on a baseball game, the odds of a play like that happening — (the changes have) increased the chances of it.”

Hardly the picture of a sport that Pittsburgh Pirates rookie ace Paul Skenes allows only tongue-somewhat-in-cheek could seem monotonous to those on the outside looking in.

“You know, especially nights like tonight,” the 22-year-old said after limiting Miami to one run in six innings while racking up nine strikeouts in a 3-2 victory on Sept. 9. “Not very many runs scored, that kind of thing. It is a boring sport in some ways.”

Not when Skenes is on the hill. The former No. 1 overall pick turned All-Star starter has been a sensation in his first year with the Pirates. His starts are simply known as “Skenes Day” in Pittsburgh and fans will show up to PNC Park wearing faux Skenes-inspired mustaches to go with their No. 30 jerseys.

The flame-throwing right-hander is among a wave of young stars, including San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill, Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and Cincinnati shortstop Elly De La Cruz.

The rising stars could eventually be where Ohtani and teammate Mookie Betts, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, and Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper are now: the faces of the game.

Nontraditional outlets bringing more eyeballs to baseball

Yet there’s more at play here. It’s not just baseball that’s changing, but the way the game is being consumed. It’s not just that more fans are watching games on their phones than ever — MLB.TV’s 28 highest-rated telecasts have all come over the course of the last two seasons — but that they’re looking toward nontraditional outlets for analysis, perspective and more than a few laughs.

Outlets like Jomboy Media. Co-founded seven years ago by Jimmy O’Brien when he was in his late 20s along with Jake Storiale, Jomboy Media offers sports-related content across various platforms, including a YouTube channel that has nearly 2 million subscribers.

The Jomboy offerings run the gamut, from comically tinged breakdowns to in-depth analysis to trivia contests among the company’s on-air talent, most of whom are in their 20s.

“My brother is 10 years younger than I am, and baseball abandoned him,” O’Brien said. “They didn’t put highlights where people could find them.”

It’s not just young males getting involved either.

Skenes’ girlfriend is LSU gymnast/influencer Livvy Dunne, who has spent a chunk of her summer exposing her 5.3 million Instagram followers to Skenes’ rapid rise from college star to rookie MLB phenom.

While Skenes himself generally shies away from social media, he also gave a tutorial on his “splinker” grip on the “Pitching Ninja” YouTube channel. Those kinds of appearances can create a connection that was simply unavailable a generation ago. Skenes sees the increasingly symbiotic relationship between players and content creators as a driver of interest in the game.

“They are growing the game and I think that’s a byproduct of what we’re doing on the field,” he said.

Loosening swag restrictions in baseball widens the game’s appeal

The aim isn’t just to create fans, but players. There’s evidence that it’s working.

Over 16 million children participated casually in baseball in 2023, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, more than double what it was in 2014, the last year before MLB launched it’s “Play Ball” Initiative. Little League International counts more than 2 million kids playing youth baseball or softball under its umbrella across the world, a slight increase over 2019.

The hope is the changes create a trickle-down effect. Make the games move along faster to appeal to a wider audience. Maybe kids watching — on their TVs, their tablets, their phones or in the stands — will find baseball a more appealing alternative to other sports or video games.

It helps MLB has loosened up its staid rules on uniforms and celebrations, allowing players to express themselves in ways that used to be forbidden. Bat-flips, hand-gestures and highly specific home run celebrations are now an accepted part of the game, along with more freedom for players to use whatever colors they prefer on their cleats or their gloves.

Swag is important. Pirates manager Derek Shelton points to New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor as proof.

“I think it’s been a very concerted effort by Major League Baseball to try to make it a little bit more, I don’t know if ‘cooler’ is the right word but appealing to younger kids because that’s what they gravitate towards,” Shelton said.

Ten years ago, Andrew McCutchen was a perennial MVP candidate who had swag to spare, from his dreadlocks (long since shorn) to the way he’d drop his bat after a walk.

When the Pittsburgh Pirates designated hitter looks out across the MLB landscape, he sees players his 6-year-old son Steel might one day emulate. Players from Atlanta outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. to San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis, all unafraid to draw attention to themselves or their sport.

“People are showing their personalities a little more, especially at a very young age that they are in their careers and that’s good,” McCutchen said. “That’s good for the game.”

The numbers across the board offer proof. The skepticism that greeted the rule changes and all that came with it has morphed into something bordering on optimism.

While things are hardly perfect — not in a season that will end with the historically bad Chicago White Sox crossing the 120-loss barrier, the Athletics bailing on Oakland and a rash of elbow injuries to high-profile pitchers that have left some wondering if the clock is to blame — there is an energy about the game that it lacked in recent years. Yes, it took seismic changes to get here. Yet all sides seem to have bought in as a potentially electric October looms.

Roberts sees it on the field, in the stands, and in the culture.

“The talent’s never been higher,” the Dodgers manager said. “More eyeballs (are on the game). And I think attendance is speaking volumes to that. I think the parity in the game speaks to that. So we’re in a good spot.”

COWBOYS HOLD GIANTS TO 5 FGS, EDGE PAST NEW YORK

Dak Prescott tossed two touchdown passes and the Dallas Cowboys held New York out of the end zone en route to a 20-15 victory over the Giants on Monday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

CeeDee Lamb caught seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown and Rico Dowdle also had a scoring reception for the Cowboys (2-2). Prescott completed 22 of 27 passes for 221 yards while helping Dallas defeat New York for the seventh straight time and 14th time in their last 15 meetings.

Amani Oruwariye picked off New York’s Daniel Jones with five seconds left to seal the victory.

Greg Joseph matched his career high of five field goals for the Giants (1-3). Jones was 29-of-40 passing for 281 yards and the interception.

Star rookie Malik Nabers has 12 receptions for 115 yards before leaving the game late with a reported concussion. Wan’Dale Robinson caught 11 passes for 71 yards for New York. Both players set career highs for catches in a game.

The Giants trailed by five when they opened the third quarter by moving 77 yards on 11 plays. But the drive stalled at the 3-yard line and the Giants had to settle for Joseph’s 22-yard field goal to move within 14-12.

Brandon Aubrey answered with a 60-yard field goal with 5:06 left in the period for Dallas. It was the second straight week that Aubrey was good from 60 or more. Last week, he booted a 65-yarder, the second-longest in NFL history, during a loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Joseph booted his fifth field goal, a 42-yarder, with 11:11 left in the contest to bring New York within 17-15.

Aubrey responded with a 40-yarder with 6:54 remaining.

New York came up empty on the next drive when Jones’ fourth-and-6 throw from his own 45-yard line for Nabers was incomplete with 3:21 remaining. Nabers dove for the ball but could not hold on, landing on the ball with his body and his head appearing to hit the ground. Nabers was on the field for a few minutes before getting up. He left for the locker room a short time later.

Dallas star linebacker Micah Parsons exited with an apparent lower-leg injury with 3:30 left. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (foot) was injured in the third quarter and didn’t return.

The Cowboys limited New York to 26 rushing yards.

Prescott threw two touchdown passes to help Dallas to a 14-9 lead at halftime. Joseph booted three first-half field goals, including a 52-yarder to start the scoring. He also hit from 41 and 38 yards.

The Cowboys led 7-3 after Prescott’s 15-yard scoring pass to Dowdle with 2:06 left in the opening quarter.

Prescott later hit Lamb inside the Giants’ 40-yard line and the receiver turned it into a 55-yard scoring play to give Dallas a 14-6 lead with 9:16 left in the half.

EAGLES WR BRITAIN COVEY OUT 6 WEEKS WITH BROKEN SCAPULA

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Britain Covey told reporters Thursday that he will be sidelined for six weeks with a broken scapula.

Covey, 27, said he will not require surgery for the shoulder injury sustained during Sunday’s victory at New Orleans.

Covey has seven catches for 34 yards and one punt return for 9 yards in three games this season.

Undrafted in 2022, he led the NFL with 417 punt-return yards in 2023 and has 11 receptions for 76 yards and zero touchdowns in 36 games (no starts).

Fellow receivers A.J. Brown (hamstring) and DeVonta Smith (concussion) did not practice Wednesday as the Eagles (2-1) get ready for Sunday’s road game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1). Brown has missed the last two games and Smith was injured in the win over the Saints.

REPORT: ATLANTA TO BE AWARDED SUPER BOWL LXII

With an owners’ vote on the horizon, the NFL plans to award Super Bowl LXII in February 2028 to Atlanta, Sports Business Journal reported Thursday.

Team owners are scheduled to meet in Atlanta in October to hold a vote on the matter.

It would mark the second Super Bowl held in the Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium, following the 2019 game that saw the New England Patriots edge the Los Angeles Rams 13-3. The city also hosted two Super Bowls at the Falcons’ previous home, the Georgia Dome.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium was recently awarded the 2031 Final Four, its first chance to hold that event after its turn in 2020 was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. The stadium will be home to the 2025 College Football Playoff national championship game and eight matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including one semifinal.

The Super Bowl for the current season is slated for New Orleans. California has the next two: The San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara hosts in February 2026 and the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers’ SoFi Stadium in Inglewood gets its second turn in five years in February 2027.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NO. 1 TEXAS WON’T NAME STARTING QB UNTIL FRIDAY

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said he won’t decide until Friday whether Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning will quarterback the nation’s No. 1 team on Saturday against Mississippi State.

Ewers left the Longhorns’ Week 3 win over UTSA with an abdominal strain and was replaced by Manning. The redshirt freshman started in Ewers’ place last weekend in a 51-3 drubbing of Louisiana-Monroe as Texas moved to 4-0.

Sarkisian told reporters Thursday that he wants Ewers, in his third season as the Longhorns starter, to have the maximum time to recover before naming his QB.

“We’re going to decide on the quarterback thing (Friday),” Sarkisian said. “It won’t be a secret. We’re not trying to pull the wool over anybody’s eyes. Just want to give Quinn every opportunity to see if he’s ready to play and what he looks like. I’d say he’s improved every day. I think Arch has had a very good week.”

In his first college start, Manning was 15-of-29 passing for 258 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions against ULM. In relief of Ewers in the UTSA game, Manning completed 9 of 12 passes for 223 yards with four TD passes and 67-yard touchdown run.

Ewers is 19-6 as a starter at Texas. He has 6,347 career passing yards, good for seventh place in program history. His 45 passing touchdowns rank sixth.

Mississippi State will be the first-ever Southeastern Conference opponent for the Longhorns. The Bulldogs (1-3, 0-1 SEC) lost their conference opener to Florida 45-28 last Saturday and lost quarterback Blake Shapen for the season to a shoulder injury.

Freshman Michael Van Buren will get his first college start for the Bulldogs on Saturday in Austin.

REPORTS: AIR FORCE, UNLV STAYING IN MOUNTAIN WEST

UNLV and Air Force have opted to remain in the Mountain West Conference, according to multiple reports late Wednesday.

UNLV rejected overtures from the rebuilding Pac-12 Conference. Air Force turned down heavy interest from the American Athletic Conference.

The decisions by the Runnin’ Rebels and the Falcons to stay put follows the previously announced departures of five Mountain West members to the Pac-12: Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State.

Air Force and UNLV made the choice to stay put after receiving “significant financial incentives,” Yahoo Sports reported. A specific dollar figure was not provided.

The Mountain West has six full members and seven football-playing schools, including Hawaii. It still must meet the minimum requirement of eight member schools set by the NCAA and College Football Playoff.

All of the remaining Mountain West schools — including New Mexico, Nevada, San Jose State and Wyoming — are expected to sign a binding agreement with the league on Thursday, according to ESPN and Yahoo Sports.

With seven members, the Pac-12 is still one short of the minimum requirements. On Monday, Memphis, Tulane, South Florida and UTSA all passed on Pac-12 offers to remain in the AAC.

BLUE-CHIP OL DOUGLAS UTU FLIPS FROM TENNESSEE TO OREGON

Douglas Utu, a blue-chip offensive lineman in the 2025 class, switched his commitment from Tennessee to Oregon on Thursday.

ESPN ranks Utu as a five-star recruit and the No. 13 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle. The 247Sports composite, which rates him as a four-star, lists him as the No. 2 interior offensive lineman in the class.

Utu is 6-foot-4 and 317 pounds and plays at powerhouse Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. The school won the Nevada 5A Division I state title after an undefeated season in 2023.

He made official visits to Washington, Michigan, Nebraska and Alabama before visiting Tennessee, where he committed on June 24.

Utu adds to an already impressive class at Oregon, which features commitments from two players ranked as No. 1 at their positions on the composite: wide receiver Dakorien Moore of Duncanville, Texas, and Trey McNutt, a safety from Cleveland.

WNBA NEWS

REPORT: SKY FIRE COACH TERESA WEATHERSPOON

After missing the WNBA playoffs with a 13-27 record, the Chicago Sky fired Teresa Weatherspoon, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.

Weatherspoon was on the job just one season. The team, featuring rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, was in playoff position when Reese got hurt on Sept. 6 against the Los Angeles Sparks. Chicago won its next game, then lost its last five to fail to grab a postseason berth for the first time in six years.

Reese decried the reported move with a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“I’m heartbroken,” Reese wrote. “I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. … You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon.”

The Sky won the 2021 WNBA championship under coach/general manager James Wade, who resigned midseason in 2023 to take a job as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors.

Under interim coach Emre Vatansever, the Sky wound up 18-22 last year, then got swept in the first round of the playoffs by the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces.

Weatherspoon got the job in October, and Chicago began this season 11-15. A seven-game losing streak followed. Then came two victories before the season-ending skid.

Reese, selected seventh overall in this year’s draft, broke the WNBA’s single-season rebounding record on Sept. 1. However, when she missed the last six games, A’ja Wilson overtook her for that mark.

Marina Mabrey led the Sky with averages of 14 points and 4.5 assists per game. Reese contributed 13.6 points and 13.1 points per contest. Elizabeth Williams averaged 10 points, and Cardoso put up 9.8 points and 7.9 boards per game.

Weatherspoon, 58, is a Basketball Hall of Famer after a career that included an NCAA championship at Louisiana Tech, five WNBA All-Star appearances with the New York Liberty and an Olympic gold medal with Team USA at the 1988 Seoul Games.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

USC, JUJU WATKINS HEADLINE BIG TEN PRESEASON HONORS

ROSEMONT, Ill. – In its inaugural year as a member of the Big Ten Conference, USC has been voted as the preseason Big Ten women’s basketball favorite by both the league’s 18 head coaches and a select media panel, the conference office announced Thursday. The coaches and media also chose Trojan sophomore guard JuJu Watkins as the 2024-25 Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year.

The coaches and media preseason polls mirrored one another, with UCLA ranked second and Ohio State slated third. Maryland claimed the fourth spot and Indiana rounded out the top five.

Watkins was a unanimous selection for the media’s Preseason All-Big Ten Team. She was joined by her USC teammate Kiki Iriafen, Iowa’s Hannah Stuelke and Lucy Olsen, Maryland’s Shyanne Sellers, Nebraska’s Alexis Markowski, Ohio State’s Cotie McMahon, UCLA’s Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice and Wisconsin’s Serah Williams.

The 10 honorees also earned spots on the coaches Preseason All-Big Ten Team, with the addition of Illinois’ Makira Cook due to a tie in voting. Watkins and Betts were unanimously chosen by the coaches.

Six of the 11 players recognized were all-conference selections a season ago, including four who earned first team honors in Williams, McMahon, Markowski and Sellers. Williams is the lone returner from last season to win an individual award, having been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year by the media.

The Big Ten Conference is coming off another successful season that saw a record-tying seven programs selected for the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Iowa advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the third time in program history and became the first Big Ten program to compete in consecutive National Championship games. The 2024 TIAA Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament saw a total attendance of 129,512 fans, a new tournament record, surpassing the previous mark of 47,923 fans set in 2023. All-session tickets were sold out prior to the start of the event, marking the first sellout in the history of the 31-year tournament. In addition, Big Ten women’s basketball programs set ratings records on seven different networks – BTN, FOX, FS1, NBC, Peacock, ESPN and CBS.

Preseason practices are underway for all 18 Big Ten member institutions, with all Big Ten head coaches and selected student-athletes from each school preparing to make their way to Rosemont, Ill. for the 2024 Big Ten Basketball Media Day on Oct. 2 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. The 2024-25 campaign tips off Nov. 4, while the 32nd Big Ten Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament will take place March 5-9 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

INDIANA FOOTBALL

INDIANA CHASES ANOTHER MILESTONE MOMENT WHEN MARYLAND VISITS IN BIG TEN HOME OPENER

Maryland (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) at Indiana (4-0, 1-0), Saturday, 12 p.m. ET (BTN)

BetMGM College Football Odds: Indiana by 7.

Series record: Indiana leads 7-5.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

This has already been a milestone season for the Hoosiers — starting 4-0 for the eighth time, breaking single-game school records for scoring and total offense and positioning themselves to become the third team to go 5-0 in the program’s 140-year history — the first since 1967. Maryland is coming off a blowout win over Villanova and needs a victory to even its conference record after a deflating Week 2 loss at home against Michigan State.

KEY MATCHUP

Maryland’s secondary vs. Indiana QB Kurtis Rourke. The Terrapins’ pass defense held up last week and it will be essential to replicate that performance this week against Rourke and the high-scoring Hoosiers. Rourke has been completed 75.5% of his throws for 1,013 yards. He’s tied for second in the Big Ten with eight TD passes and has two TD runs.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Maryland: Tai Felton. The fourth-year receiver has at least seven receptions and one TD catch in every game this season while topping the 100-yard mark in all four, too. After recording 14 catches, 157 yards and one TD last week, everyone — including the Hoosiers secondary — will be focusing on Felton this week.

Indiana: Offensive line. It has done an incredible job helping to keep coach Curt Cignetti’s offense balanced with a stronger than anticipated ground game while keeping Rourke upright. The Hoosiers have allowed just two sacks through four games, a stark contrast from recent seasons, though Maryland will be this unit’s second major test.

PURDUE WOMEN’S SOCCER

BOILERS FALL IN ROAD BOUT AT WASHINGTON

SEATTLE – In Purdue Soccer’s first road trip to the Pacific Northwest since 2008, the Boilermakers fell in a 2-0 decision to the Washington Huskies on Thursday night.

Goalkeeper Emily Edwards recorded a career-high eight saves, smashing her previous best of six that she had set in the game at Butler earlier this season. The sophomore from Holly Springs, N.C., kept Purdue (5-5-1) within striking distance as the team persevered through brisk conditions and 13 mph winds. Her effort marked five consecutive games with at least five saves.

Gracie Dunaway and Chiara Singarella paced the Boilermakers with two shots apiece. Dunaway’s first chance came in the fourth minute, which led to the game’s first corner kick. The Husky defense held strong, though, and remained stout against the Purdue attack for much of the contest.

As Cloey Uddenberg stepped forward to make a play on the defensive end in the 36th minute, Washington midfielder Tatum Thomason just beat her to the ball and forced a collision that set up a Huskies penalty kick. The mistake proved costly as Washington’s Ioanna Papatheodorou ripped the ball to the left side of the net to score the game’s first goal.

Down by one near the end of the first half, Kayla Budish had one of the Boilermakers’ best chances of the night as she stormed in from the right side and fired on goal. The Washington goalkeeper made a diving stop to her right and snuffed out the junior’s opportunity.

After the break, the Washington offense found some momentum and started peppering shots, but Edwards and the Purdue defense turned away a string of them. At the 66th minute, Washington finally broke through and scored its only run-of-play goal of the evening.

Singarella had another solid opportunity for the Boilermakers in the 77th minute but her shot missed just high after a nice effort from the outside edge of the 18. Sydney Boudreau booted one last shot with eight seconds remaining, but Purdue was ultimately held scoreless.

The Boilers will head south to Eugene, Ore., to conclude their West Coast trip with another Big Ten matchup. Purdue faces Oregon on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET with the broadcast on B1G+.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S SOCCER

#13 IRISH DOMINATE POSSESSION BUT SETTLE FOR 1-1 TIE AGAINST NC STATE

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 13 Notre Dame women’s soccer squad was back at full strength post U20 World Cup and back at home for the first time in a couple of weeks, yet did not find the result they hoped for on Thursday night against NC State.

The Fighting Irish (7-1-2, 1-0-2) dominated the possession, over 60 percent to be exact, and outshot the Wolfpack (3-6-2, 0-2-1), 20-4, including a 9-1 shots on goal advantage.

However, that one SOG attempt from NC State found the back of the net and the Irish had to rally in the 2nd half to earn the 1-1 tie. Notre Dame had several chances in the second half for the game-winner, the closest being Laney Matriano’s shot off the left post in the 80th minute.

Senior Sophia Fisher scored Notre Dame’s lone goal of the match, marking her first of the season and seventh of her career. Matriano delivered a perfect corner kick right to Fisher’s head on the far post.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Notre Dame owned 61 percent of the possession in the first half and outshot NC State 11-2. However, at halftime, the scoreboard said 1-0 in favor of the Wolfpack.

In the 27th minute, NC State earned a corner kick and scored directly off of it. The Wolfpack’s Taylor Chism was positioned on the far post and hit a direct header in. It marked the first goal scored on goalkeeper Atlee Olofson this season.

The second half featured a similar script. The Irish dominated possession and kept the ball in NC State’s half of the field, but just couldn’t connect in the attacking third.

Leah Klenke had the first good look in the 62nd minute. The junior stepped up in the middle of the field (about 25 yards out) and ripped a shot that sailed just over the crossbar near the upper-right 90.

In the 72nd minute the Irish answer finally arrived and it was their first corner kick goal of the season. It was Laney Matriano directly to the head of the Sophia Fisher. It marked Matriano’s first assist of the season.

A flurry of chances occurred around the 80th minute. Engle blew by her defender and hit a shot that richoeted off a defender and almost in. Moments later, Matriano hit a missile that bounced off the left post and Hodsden’s rebound shot went high.

UP NEXT

If you weren’t at Alumni tonight to see your Irish then you’ll have to wait a couple of more weeks to see them again at home. Next week, Notre Dame has just one match – at Syracuse, on Saturday, Oct 5, at 1 p.m. ET on ACCNX.

Senior Ashton Kudlo registered five saves and faced nine corner kicks in keeping the Penguins off the scoresheet. Conversely, the Jags were opportunistic in the attack, capitalizing on one of just six shot attempts and putting just two on frame in the win.

However, it was Roberson’s strike on the counterattack the ultimately decided the outcome.

“It was exciting to finally put one away, but the build-up from everyone made it a team goal,” Roberson said. “We all carried the same energy and drive to earn it. My teammates have been the most supportive of both myself and each other and tonight was a prime example of that.”

After a balanced, scoreless first half, the Penguins had the better run of play to start the second, testing Kudlo and the Jaguars defense with a bevy of attempts. It wasn’t until the 68th minute that the Jags got free for the winner as Maia Ransom got in behind the YSU defense after a long pass from Emma Frey over the top of the Penguins. Ransom maneuvered past a pair of defenders and angled a pass back to a sprinting Roberson, who slotted a right-footed shot past YSU goalkeeper Maya Naimoli for the score.

Both Ransom and Frey collected their team-high fourth assists of the year on the play.

YSU seemingly had an answer less than a minute later, but an offsides call negated an apparent goal in the 70th minute.

From there, the IU Indy (3-6-1, 2-0 HL) defense continued to hunker down and keep the Penguins at bay with Katie Hoog and Kailyn Smith anchoring the center back spots. The attack found some footing in the final 10 minutes off the match and was aided by some antsy YSU defense that resulted in four fouls in the final seven minutes of the contest.

YSU closed with a 13-6 shot margin and 9-0 margin in corner kicks. Ransom, who played exclusively at forward on Thursday, had a team-high three shot attempts and had the Jags’ lone shot on goal in the opening half. Sara Felder paced the YSU attack with three shots. The shutout was the 14th of Kudlo’s collegiate career, which puts her No. 3 on the program’s all-time list.

“It was so important to get these points on the road,” Roberson said. “Coming into it, we all bought into the gameplan and executed it extremely well. I’m very proud of the commitment our team put forth. Tonight’s win also gives us momentum that I know will be carried into our away game Sunday.”

The Jaguars will close the two-game road trip on Sunday (Sept. 29) at Robert Morris at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL

CARDINALS VISIT VIRGINIA TO BATTLE SUN BELT FOE JAMES MADISON

MUNCIE, Ind. — Ball State steps away from the MAC this week while traveling to Harrisonburg, Virginia, to face James Madison out of the Sun Belt Conference. It is just the second time the schools have ever met on the gridiron, and the first as FBS opponents.

** Ball State enters the contest at 1-2 following a heartbreaking, gut-wrenching road defeat at Central Michigan last week, in which a five-play, 97-yard two-minute drill touchdown and near victory was snatched from the Cardinals’ hands in the final seconds. JMU, meanwhile, welcomes Ball State to Bridgeforth Stadium following the Dukes’ rousing 70-50 win at North Carolina.

** The Cardinals got career-high performances in the passing game last weekend, with redshirt freshman Kadin Semonza finishing a lateral-play shy of the first 300-yard pass game of his career; and tight end Tanner Koziol finishing with nine catches for 112 yards and the first 100-yard receiving game of his career.

** At Central Michigan, Ball State proved adept at managing clock and sustaining long drives, but fell victim to big plays on defense. Ball State won the turnover battle for the second time in three games and even blocked two kicks — a punt and an extra point.

** The 100th anniversary of Ball State’s first season in 1924 coincides with the 100th season on the field, given that the Cardinals didn’t field a team in 1943 due to World War II. Season-long celebrations of the 100th season will be displayed at Scheumann Stadium this season. Similarly, it is the program’s 50th season in the MAC — formally joining the league in 1973 and playing its first football games in 1975.

WHAT A WIN MEANS:

** The Cardinals will capture their first road win this season, and their first since beating Northern Illinois last season.

** Ball State will snap a two-game skid against Sun Belt Conference opponents and get their first win against the SBC since beating Georgia State in 2016.

** The fifth winningest coach in Ball State football history, Mike Neu will capture his 39th victory as head coach of his alma mater to move within one victory of tying Dwight Wallace (40) with the fourth-most wins in Cardinals history.

BY THE NUMBERS

2 – The Cardinals blocked a punt and a PAT last week at CMU to mark the first time blocking two kicks since 2009 vs. New Hampshire.

112 – Tanner Koziol had career highs of nine catches and 112 receiving yards at CMU. His 16-yard TD staked Ball State to a 34-30 lead.

34:04 – The Cardinals rank eighth nationally while possessing the ball over 34 minutes per game.

304 – Kadin Semonza’s pass yards last week prior to a final-play lateral which lost 19 yards and cost him the first 300-yard game of his career.

BALL STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER

SOCCER TOPS AKRON ON EARLY GOAL AND LATE SAVE

AKRON, Ohio – The Ball State soccer team used an early goal from Addie Chester and a late save by Abby Jenkins to beat Akron 1-0 on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Cardinals (6-4, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) got on the board when Avery Fenchel assisted on Chester’s shot that went over the Akron goalkeeper’s head into the back of the net in the sixth minute. Ball State was the aggressor in the first half leading 10-2 in shots and 4-0 in shots on goal.

The Zips (5-3-2, 0-3 MAC) had more looks in the second period and got two on goal including one with about seven minutes to go when Emma King had a breakaway shot, but Jenkins slid to block it away and preserve Ball State’s second shutout win of the year.

Fenchel and Kaelyn Valleau put two shots on goal each for the Cardinals, while Acadia Murphy, LG Moncrief and Chester had one each for the visitors. The goal for Chester was her sixth of the year to move her to a tie with Delaney Caldwell for the team lead.

Grace Konopatzki and Jenkins combined for the shutout as Konopatzki patrolled the goal in the first half. Jenkins made a pair of saves in her first action since Aug. 20 against Indiana.

Ball State led 13-8 on total shots and 7-2 on shots on goal for the match. Akron had one more corner kick (4-3), and both teams were whistled for 11 fouls.

The Cardinals return home to play Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

EVANSVILLE WOMEN’S SOCCER

ACES WOMEN’S SOCCER TIES AT MISSOURI STATE

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team picked up its second straight point in a 1-1 draw at Missouri State.

The Purple Aces scored their first goal in Springfield since 2014 on Thursday night in their final conference visit to Missouri State. Freshman defender Emmy Brenner (Arlington, Tenn. / St. Benedict at Auburndale HS) scored her second goal of the season to tie the match in the 73rd minute. Thursday’s result was the first for Evansville against Missouri State since 2021.

UE got the jump on Missouri State to start the match with an early corner kick and shot attempt from sophomore midfielder Ella Hamner (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial HS). But the Bears took control of the game’s pace for the rest of the first half. The Aces defense fended off 10 shots from Missouri State over 40 minutes, including two team saves along with goalkeeper Myia Danek.

The pace of the match evened out in the second half as neither team put up more than a shot over the first 15 minutes. But the Bears had the slight advantage with three shots over 10 minutes midway through the half. The pace in Evansville’s defensive end resulted in a Missouri State goal in the 71st minute. The Bears wouldn’t hold the lead for long as UE responded almost immediately.

In the 74th minute the Aces took a corner kick on right side of the pitch. Junior forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) took the kick for the set piece and found Brenner just outside the six. Brenner was able to rise up and head the ball into the back of the net for her second goal to equalize the match. The goal was Brenner’s second of the season and Velazquez was credited with her first assist of the year.

Evansville continued to attack Missouri State’s net in the final 15 minutes of play. UE recorded four corner kicks in the final five minutes of the match trying for a second set piece goal to leave Springfield with a win. The Aces put two shots on net during those four corner kicks but weren’t able to get the game-winning goal. But Evansville earned its first result against the Bears since the 2019 season.

UE has a week off before returning to action at home in Evansville. The Aces will welcome the UNI Panthers to Arad McCutchan Stadium on Thursday, October 3rd. Kick-off against the Panthers is set for 6 p.m. from Evansville.

SOUTHERN INDIANA WOMEN’S SOCCER

EAGLES POUR IN FOUR GOALS IN WIN AGAINST SKYHAWKS

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer poured on the offense Thursday night at Strassweg Field in a 4-1 conference victory against the University of Tennessee at Martin.

In its second Ohio Valley Conference match this season, Southern Indiana (2-6-3, 1-0-1 OVC) had to battle less-than-ideal weather for the second time in as many weeks on Thursday with heavy rain falling off and on throughout the evening. The Screaming Eagles showed once again they were not fazed.

USI came out buzzing on the field and aggressive toward goal. Sophomore midfielder Pilar Torres set the tone with a pair of shots on goal within the first two minutes of the match. Recording several more shots in the opening minutes, Southern Indiana claimed a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Torres slotted a pass from the wing that was tapped inside the near post by junior midfielder Peyton Murphy, her first goal of the season.

Nearly seven minutes later, USI doubled its advantage to 2-0. Torres dished out her second assist of the night after dribbling down the field and finding junior midfielder Emerson Grafton to her left, who finished the play with her second goal of the season.

With under 10 minutes left in the first half, UT Martin (2-5-3, 1-1-0 OVC) looked to respond by putting a couple of shots on goal, including one that forced USI redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Anna Markland to make a highlight jumping punch-save over the crossbar. A few minutes later right before halftime, senior midfielder Adriana Berruti gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead with her first career goal after a throw-in by junior defender Brynn Quick and a connecting pass across the face of goal from Murphy.

Southern Indiana stayed strong defensively and remained on the offensive to start the second half of play. Following a pair of blocked shot attempts inside the box, the ball deflected out to the top of the 18 where junior defender Charli Grafton rifled a one-timer into the top-right corner of the goal to push USI’s lead to four. It marked the first time the Grafton sisters scored in the same game.

The visiting Skyhawks got one goal back in the 73rd minute, but the Screaming Eagles did not relinquish their lead any further and secured the 4-1 victory.

Southern Indiana took 20 shot attempts Thursday evening, the most since USI had 21 in last season’s 1-1 tie against UT Martin. USI placed eight of its 20 shots on goal on Thursday. The Skyhawks had five of its nine shots go on target. Plus, entering Thursday’s action, USI and UT Martin were one and two, respectively, in the OVC for most fouls committed this season. The two sides combined for only 15 fouls Thursday.

Individually, Murphy led USI with four shots with Torres and Charli Grafton posting a team-high two shots on goal. Torres had three total shot attempts in addition to two assists. The last time a Screaming Eagles had a pair of assists in a game was in August 2022 when Morgan Beyer and Jill DiTusa each had two helpers against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Between the posts, Markland totaled four saves for USI.

After Thursday’s action and claiming three points, Southern Indiana moved into a tie for second in the OVC standings with four points alongside Lindenwood University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

MARIAN FOOTBALL

GAMEDAY GUIDE: NO. 7 MARIAN CLOSES SEPTEMBER AT TAYLOR SATURDAY NIGHT

INDIANAPOLIS – Coming off a nail-biting 24-23 victory last Saturday at Lawrence Tech, the Marian football team travels north once again to close the month of September, heading to Upland on Saturday night to take on Taylor University. Saturday’s game has the potential to be a battle to determine the last undefeated team in the entire MSFA, with kickoff coming at 7:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

Marian earned a win last Saturday at Lawrence Tech, taking home a 24-23 win. Despite their defensive struggles against the Blue Devils, the Knights put together a two-minute drive, marching 78 yards in 2:19 for the game-winning score, as Tristan Polk found Tirae Spence for the final touchdown. Kenny Curry converted the game-winning extra point, and JT Downey sealed the win with an interception.

TAKING ON THE TROJANS

Marian has historically owned their series with Taylor, owning a 14-game winning streak entering this weekend while holding a 16-1 all-time record against the Trojans. The lone loss in the series came in 2009, when the Knights fell at home. Marian is 9-0 all-time in games at Taylor, and are meeting under the lights for the second time in three matchups in Upland.

Last year, the Knights won 34-20 at Taylor, putting up big scoring plays in the first half. The only other contest that the teams were undefeated came in the 2021 spring season, which the Knights were 1-0 and the Trojans were 0-0.

Taylor is off to their best start, as their 4-0 mark is their longest undefeated start since their 1999 season. The winner Saturday night could determine the last undefeated team in the Mid-States Football Association, as the Knights and Trojans are both unblemished, as is St. Francis (Illinois). The Fighting Saints kickoff at 2:00 p.m. against Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

WEATHER ALERT

With Hurricane Helene hitting the southern coast on Thursday, rain and wind could reach as far north on Taylor by Saturday night. Make sure to grab rain gear, and prepare for all elements.
