MLB ROUNDUP: RAYS PULL EVEN WITH O’S IN AL EAST WITH WIN
Zac Eflin took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Harold Ramirez smacked a three-run homer and the visiting Tampa Bay Rays moved into a virtual tie for first place in the American League East with a 7-1 win against the Baltimore Orioles Friday night.
Brandon Lowe also homered and Manuel Margot and Randy Arozarena had three hits apiece for the Rays (92-57), who are tied with the Orioles atop the division for the first time since July 21. Eflin (15-8) went seven innings, allowing a run on one hit. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter while becoming the AL’s first 15-game winner.
Rookie Heston Kjerstad broke up the no-hitter with his first major league hit, a home run leading off the sixth inning for the Orioles (91-56), who have lost four straight games while scoring a total of six runs.
Baltimore starter Jack Flaherty (8-9) continued to struggle, giving up three runs on six hits over four innings.
Dodgers 6, Mariners 3
Miguel Rojas hit a two-run homer to give Los Angeles the lead en route to defeating host Seattle in the opener of a three-game interleague series.
J.D. Martinez also drove in two runs and James Outman added a solo shot in the ninth inning for the Dodgers, who reduced their magic number to two to clinch the National West League title for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons.
Eugenio Suarez homered for the Mariners, who had a two-game winning streak snapped and missed a chance to make up ground in the American League West after both Houston and Texas lost. Seattle remained a half-game ahead of Toronto for the AL’s third and final wild-card playoff berth.
Yankees 7, Pirates 5
A four-run ninth inning, fueled by a crucial error, lifted visiting New York past Pittsburgh.
Ben Rortvedt, DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge hit RBI singles for the Yankees. New York won for the fifth time in six games. New York starter Gerrit Cole allowed two runs and six hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out four. Nick Ramirez (1-2) pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings, and Clay Holmes handled the ninth for his 20th save. Yankees reliever Anthony Misiewicz was taken off the field on a cart after he took a line drive to the head in the sixth. He was alert at a local hospital, the team announced.
Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a two-run single and Bryan Reynolds and Ji Hwan Bae added RBI singles for the Pirates, whose three-game winning streak ended. Pittsburgh starter Johan Oviedo held the Yankees to one run and four hits in five innings. He issued five walks and fanned seven.
Brewers 5, Nationals 3
William Contreras and Carlos Santana hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning as host Milwaukee rallied to beat Washington.
Contreras hit a three-run homer and Santana followed with a solo shot to allow the Brewers to erase a three-run deficit. Santana homered again in the eighth inning. Wade Miley (8-4) tossed 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball, and Devin Williams pitched the ninth for his 35th save.
Nationals starter Jake Irvin (3-6) lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs. Lane Thomas homered for Washington.
Guardians 12, Rangers 3
Lucas Giolito scattered two hits and struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings to lift host Cleveland to a victory over Texas.
Cleveland’s Andres Gimenez and Kole Calhoun each belted a two-run homer and Ramon Laureano went deep to lead off the fifth. Josh Naylor drove in three runs to highlight his four-hit performance, Will Brennan had a two-run double and Jose Ramirez and Gimenez each drove in another run for the Guardians.
Cleveland’s 15-hit uprising went a long way toward snapping Texas’ six-game winning streak. The Rangers mustered little before Sam Huff’s solo homer in the ninth ended the shutout bid.
Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 0
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-run home run, Jose Berrios pitched seven strong innings and Toronto defeated visiting Boston in the opener of a three-game series.
The Blue Jays ended a four-game losing streak and are 4-4 on a 10-game homestand. They were coming off a four-game sweep by the Texas Rangers. Berrios (11-10) allowed five hits and no walks while striking out eight.
The Red Sox were coming off a split of a doubleheader against the visiting New York Yankees on Thursday. Justin Turner hit two doubles to lead the Boston offense. Boston right-hander Brayan Bello (12-9) gave up the three-run homer to Guerrero, along with three other hits and one walk in six innings, He had a career-best 10 strikeouts.
Marlins 9, Braves 6
Luis Arraez homered twice, and Jacob Stallings stroked a go-ahead, three-run double as host Miami rallied past Atlanta.
The Braves, who clinched their sixth straight National League East title on Wednesday, removed star right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. from the game in the eighth inning due to right calf tightness. Miami beat former Marlins reliever Brad Hand (4-2), who allowed four runs in one-third of an inning. Michael Harris II homered for the Braves, his 17th of the year.
Miami, battling for an NL wild-card playoff berth, got 13 hits and improved to 2-9 against the Braves this season. Arraez, who leads the majors with a .349 batting average, had the first multi-homer game of his career. He went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.
Diamondbacks 6, Cubs 4
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Alek Thomas each smacked a three-run homer to lead Arizona to a victory over Chicago in Phoenix.
Gurriel’s blast came in the first inning, and Thomas went deep in the sixth. Gabriel Moreno went 4-for-4 for the Diamondbacks, who are tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the National League’s third wild-card berth. The Cubs are 1 1/2 games ahead of both teams.

Reds 5, Mets 3
Jonathan India snapped a seventh-inning tie with a two-run homer for visiting Cincinnati, which earned a pivotal win over New York in the opener of a three-game series.
The Reds have won four of five. Cincinnati began the day in a virtual three-way tie for the last National League wild card berth. Spencer Steer also hit a two-run homer for the Reds, while Noelvi Marte had three hits and scored on a wild pitch.
Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer for the Mets, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. DJ Stewart had a pair of singles. Lucas Sims (6-3), the first of three Reds relievers, got the final out of the sixth. Alexis Diaz notched his 37th save with 1 2/3 perfect innings.
Rockies 3, Giants 2
Colorado scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and extended their winning streak to three games by beating visiting San Francisco.
The Giants, who are one game out of the third National League wild-card spot, led 1-0 entering the bottom of the eighth despite having no hits to that point. Elehuris Montero came up with an RBI single to tie the game in the ninth, and Nolan Jones scored the game-winning run on the play when Mike Yastrzemski’s throw from left field hit Blackmon in the back and rolled past catcher Patrick Bailey.
J.D. Davis gave the Giants a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth by scoring when pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs. The Giants didn’t have a hit until Davis led off the ninth with a double against Nick Mears, who surrendered two hits and walked two in the inning. Chase Anderson pitched seven no-hit innings for the Rockies.
Twins 10, White Sox 2
Royce Lewis belted his fourth grand slam of the season and Alex Kirilloff had three hits to lift visiting Minnesota to a victory against Chicago.
American League Central-leading Minnesota (78-70) won for the third time in four games while sending Chicago to its 11th loss in 14 games. Minnesota’s magic number to clinch the division is down to seven. With two outs and the bases loaded in the second, Lewis drove a 3-1 pitch from White Sox rookie right-hander Jesse Scholtens into the left field bleachers.
Lewis notched his fifth career grand slam overall in his 66th career game, the fastest any player has achieved that milestone, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Twins right-hander Bailey Ober benefited from the blast to pick up his first win since July 18, a span of eight starts.

Kansas City starter Zack Greinke pitched two scoreless innings before departing. Angel Zerpa (2-3) allowed one run and two hits in four innings of relief to record the win. He fanned five and walked one. Taylor Clarke yielded a run in the ninth but still earned his first save of the season.
Astros starter Cristian Javier (9-4) allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked one. Houston was unable to take advantage of a loss earlier in the day by the Texas Rangers and remains a half-game ahead of the second-place Rangers in the AL West.
Padres 8, Athletics 3
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered and drove in three runs, and visiting San Diego never trailed in delivering manager Bob Melvin a happy homecoming with an interleague victory over Oakland.

CHARGERS’ EKELER AND KENDRICKS DOUBTFUL, BOSA QUESTIONABLE GOING INTO SUNDAY’S GAME AT TITANS
COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) The Los Angeles Chargers could be without Austin Ekeler, Joey Bosa and Eric Kendricks for Sunday’s game at Tennessee.
Ekeler (ankle) and Kendricks (hamstring) are listed as doubtful after practicing all week. Bosa is questionable after being limited on Friday. He did not practice the first two days due to a hamstring injury.
Coach Brandon Staley said all three will be gametime decisions.
The Chargers, who lost 36-34 last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, are looking to avoid their first 0-2 start since 2017.
Ekeler helped fuel a Los Angeles rushing attack that went for a league-high 245 yards last week. Ekeler had the fourth 100-yard ground game of his seven-year career with 117 yards and a touchdown.
Joshua Kelley will be expected to shoulder most of the load after he had a career-high 91 yards last week. Los Angeles had 40 rushing attempts, with Kelley and Ekeler having 16 apiece.
The Chargers face a huge test this week in a Titans defense that had the league’s top run defense last season.
“It’s a great challenge. It’s exciting because as a competitor, especially someone who’s a part of the run game, because you get to see what it is about,” Kelley said. “It’s going to be exciting because when you get your opportunities, you have got to make the most of it.”
Elijah Dotson and Isaiah Spiller will back up Kelley if Ekeler is inactive.
Kendricks, the Chargers’ biggest addition during the offseason, had seven tackles and played all 67 snaps against the Dolphins. Kenneth Murray would have the helmet to receive defensive calls from the sideline if Kendricks is inactive.
Bosa missed 12 games last season due to a groin injury. Second-round pick Tuli Tuipulotu could get his first start in place of Bosa.
VIKINGS RB MATTISON CALLS OUT RACIAL SLURS DIRECTED AT HIM ON SOCIAL MEDIA AFTER LOSS TO EAGLES
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison received more than 60 “disgustingly disrespectful messages” through social media that included racial slurs and encouraged suicide, the fifth-year player said Friday in the aftermath of the team’s most recent loss.
Mattison, who is Black, revealed on an Instagram Story post that he was taunted through direct messages and in the comments sections on the social media platform for his performance in Minnesota’s 34-28 defeat Thursday at Philadelphia, where Mattison had one of the Vikings’ four fumbles. He urged the 60-plus users to “really reflect” on their words and how they could truly affect a person.
“Under my helmet, I am a human, a father, a son,” Mattison wrote. “This is sick.”
The Vikings said in a statement Friday they were “sickened” by the messages directed at Mattison.
“There simply is no room for racist words or actions in sports or society,” the team said.
The NFL also issued a statement of condemnation.
“We stand firmly with Alexander and remind fans to remember the humanity of all players and celebrate their contributions to the game we all love,” the league said.
JETS’ RODGERS USING DOUBTERS AS MOTIVATION AND INDICATES HE’LL PLAY AGAIN AFTER TORN ACHILLES TENDON
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he’ll use doubters as motivation in his rehabilitation from Achilles tendon surgery and indicates he’ll play football again – perhaps even this season.
Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon on the fourth snap of his debut with his new team on Monday night, a 22-16 overtime victory over Buffalo. The four-time NFL MVP had surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles.
“I think what I’d like to say is, give me the doubts,” Rodgers said in an appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Friday. “Give me the timetables. Give me all the things that you think can, should or will happen because all I need is that one little extra percent of inspiration. That’s all I need.
“So give me your doubts, give me your prognostications and then watch what I do.”
Rodgers’ surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, an orthopedic surgeon based in Los Angeles who has worked with numerous professional athletes during his career. The 39-year-old quarterback faces a long, arduous recovery and rehabilitation from the injury.
“Definitely some odds stacked against me based on age, but I like it,” Rodgers said. “Stack all the odds up against me and see what happens.”
He said he has spoken to several people who have had a similar injury and rehabilitation process.
“My entire focus and dedication is on acquiring the most information,” Rodgers said. “And then adding to what I’ve already put together is a pretty damn good rehab plan that’s going to, I think, shock some people.”
Rodgers wouldn’t put any timetables on his return, but he made it clear he intends to play football again. He was asked if he means this season – if the Jets make it to the playoffs.
“I’m not going to make any of those statements,” Rodgers said. “I don’t feel like that’s fair to myself. I think, as Kevin Garnett said, anything’s possible.”
Rodgers said he knew the injury was bad nearly as soon as it happened because it felt different from previous calf injuries he has had during his career. He was sacked by Buffalo’s Leonard Floyd, got up and took a few steps, looked over to the Jets’ sideline and shook his head and then sat on the turf as the MetLife Stadium crowd sat in stunned silence.
“Monday was an amazing day to start,” Rodgers said. “Amazing night running on the field with the flag, electric. And then it turned into one of the toughest 24 hours stretches I’ve had in my life, for sure. A lot of sadness, a lot of tears, a lot of dark frustration and anger, all the gamut of emotions.
“But then the sun rose the next day, and I found myself in LA and had surgery on Wednesday. And since then, I’ve been feeling better.”
Rodgers said one of the worst parts was having his teammates see him in the locker room at halftime, particularly wide receiver Randall Cobb – who was also a longtime teammate in Green Bay and has a son for whom Rodgers is the godfather.
“I kind of lost it,” Rodgers said. “And, you know, after everybody else came in, it’s just kind of blubbering some sort of thank-yous through the disappointment and the tears. But I’m thankful for the tears. It makes you feel like you’re alive. And I care about it so much. I care about what we were trying to establish and did establish, you know, chemistry-wise and culture-wise.
“I just care about it so much. It just hit me like a ton of bricks for 24 hours.”
Rodgers said he has been flooded with messages of support since the injury and appreciated everyone reaching out. He can’t put any weight on his foot while it heals but intends to return to the Jets’ facility when he’s cleared to travel.
“I miss the guys,” he said. “I miss New York, New Jersey, the energy, the excitement.”
Zach Wilson will start in Rodgers’ place at Dallas on Sunday and in the foreseeable future. The third-year quarterback struggled his first two seasons, but Rodgers took him under his wing since he was traded to New York in April.
“I’m very confident in Zach and I think he’s confident himself, which is the most important thing,” Rodgers said. “I’m excited for him. He’s a great kid. Love him, and I’m pulling for him.”

THOMAS MOVES BACK INTO CONTENTION AT FORTINET CHAMPIONSHIP
NAPA. Calif. (AP) Justin Thomas committed to a driver change, tinkered a little with his swing and got immediate results with a 5-under 67 that left him four strokes off the pace Friday in the Fortinet Championship.
It was exactly what the former top-ranked player needed after going winless during the FedEx Cup season, taking some time off and then struggling through the first round in Napa. One of four U.S. Ryder Cup team members at Silverado Resort, Thomas feels much better about his game than he did a short time ago.
S.H. Kim played in the afternoon and made six birdies and one bogey for a 67 and a share of the lead with Sahith Theegala (64) at 12-under 132. Kim had a chance to pull ahead on his last hole, but left a 24-foot putt short on No. 18.
Sangmoon Bae (66) was third at 11 under, a shot ahead of Eric Cole (66).
Two-time defending champion Max Homa, also on the Ryder Cup team, had a 66 to match Thomas at 8 under. U.S. captain Zach Ryder (74) and co-captain Stewart Cink (72) were tied at 1-under 143 and missed the cut in the final tune-up to the Ryder Cup in two weeks.
Thomas, using a new driver with a shaft nearly an inch longer, was much more crisp off the tee and got longer, more accurate drives as a result.
Thomas said he’s been practicing using the new driver for about three weeks and is pleased with the results, saying he may never switch back. He hit 8 of 14 fairways Friday and had an average driving distance of 340 yards.
“If I drive it like I did today, I’ll use it for the rest of my career,” Thomas joked.
More significant than the change in equipment for Thomas was a slight alteration to his swing.
“Even as a golfer we’re the first to blame anything and everything else, but it was me,” Thomas said. “I could tell in one video I was getting stuck underneath it. So I had a good thought just from a little 10-minute range session yesterday afternoon that I felt like could get me through today, and it worked pretty well.”
Theegala, winless on the tour, felt pretty good about his own round that included a chip-in for eagle out of a greenside bunker on No. 5.
That helped relax even more than he already was, an attitude he carried into Napa after stressing about the tournament in year’s past when the Fortinet was the season-opening event.
That’s not the case anymore, as the tournament in Napa is the first of seven that comprise the FedEx Fall.
Players who didn’t finish in the top 50 can continue to earn points, with those finishing the fall 51st-60 getting exemption for the first two signature events of 2024 while players within the top 125 retain their tour cards.
Theegala, 31st in points, is already locked in for next season and was able to focus primarily on his round Friday.
“The last couple years I was super nervous Monday through Wednesday, but this Monday through Wednesday I was really relaxed and kind of just felt like another tournament,” Theegala said.
Starting on the back nine, Theegala got off to a quick start with birdies on three of the first six holes. After a bogey on the par-4 16th, Theegala got back on track and got to 10-under with the eagle on No. 5 before closing his round with birdies on two of his final four holes.
“If I could just get my tee shots in play and get the driver under control, I feel pretty good about the rest of my game,” Theegala said. “I did not do that today. I got really fortunate, I got a couple really nice breaks.”

HOUSTON (AP) C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson are good friends who have known each other since high school.
“I love C.J.,” Richardson said.
“That’s my guy,” Stroud said. “I love him to death.”
On Sunday, the two quarterbacks will put aside those warm feelings when Stroud leads the Houston Texans against Richardson and the Indianapolis Colts.
“I’m rooting for him and I hope that everything in his career goes well, except for when he plays the Texans,” Stroud said with a laugh.
Both rookies will be looking for their first win Sunday after the Texans lost 25-9 to the Ravens in their opener and Indianapolis was defeated 31-21 by Jacksonville.
Despite the losses, both quarterbacks did some good things in their NFL debuts after Stroud was taken second overall in this year’s draft and Richardson was selected two picks later.
Stroud completed 28 of 44 passes for 242 yards and Richardson was 24 of 37 for 223 yards with a touchdown and ran for another score.
Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen said there was a lot to like about Richardson’s first game.
“He did a really nice job,” he said. “He went to the right spots with the football. The completion percentage was good. We got some shots down the field, and he was smart with the football. … There are little details to clean up like there will be every week, but very encouraged with his first performance.”
Houston coach DeMeco Ryans was also impressed with Stroud’s first time out.
“It was a tough place to play, a tough opponent,” Ryans said. “A lot of things were stacked up against him, but I thought he handled himself well.”
Richardson certainly learned a lot in his first NFL game, but perhaps the most important thing the dual-threat QB took from his first start was that he’ll need to slide more at the end of runs.
“I was a little sore,” he said. “I woke up with some feelings that I’ve never felt before. Some of the vets were like, ‘Welcome to the league, rook. That’s how it’s going to be.’”
ANDERSON’S IMPACT
Houston defensive end Will Anderson, who was drafted between Stroud and Richardson, made an immediate impact in his debut against the Ravens. He became the only rookie franchise history to get a sack in Week 1 when he took down Lamar Jackson. He also had six quarterback pressures against Baltimore, tying Nick Bosa and Josh Allen for the most by a rookie in an opener since 2019.
“It was fun,” he said. “I took in every moment, and I think the team did a really good job. Of course, we made some mistakes, but we just have to keep learning and getting better. We need to do a better job in the red zone, and we can be a really good defense.”
GROUNDED
Indy’s running game struggled mightily last week without the top two backs, 2021 NFL rushing champion Jonathan Taylor and Zack Moss. Richardson had 10 carries for 40 yards, while the rest of the team logged 16 carries for 25 yards. It could be more of the same this week.
While the disgruntled Taylor (ankle) is on the physically unable to perform and is out until at least Week 5, Moss’ status is unclear. He broke his right arm during training camp and didn’t return to practice until last week then was inactive for the Jacksonville game. Steichen wouldn’t even hint at whether Moss might play in Houston.
“He’s progressing well,” Steichen said Wednesday.
METCHIE’S DEBUT
Houston receiver John Metchie is expected to make his NFL debut this week after missing the opener with a hamstring injury. The former Alabama standout returned this season after sitting out his entire rookie season undergoing treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia.
The Texans could use him to beef up their receiving group after Noah Brown was placed on the injured reserve with a groin injury this week.
COMING UP SHORT
Perhaps the biggest problem for Indy in the opener was its inability to convert on third and fourth down. Indy finished 2 of 12 on third down, 16.7%, and was 1 of 5 on fourth down, 20%. The numbers even included a failed quarterback sneak on fourth-and-inches.
“I was a little (surprised) because it wasn’t a yard,” Steichen said. “We’ve got to be better there. We’ve got to keep getting better at it.”
It wasn’t just the late down situations, either. The Colts only scored points on one of three trips inside the red zone, though one of those misses came in the final minute of the game.

GORSKI DELIVERS GO-AHEAD NINTH-INNING BLAST, JONES TOSSES GEM IN THRILLING WIN
PAPILLION, Neb. – Matt Gorski launched a go-ahead two-run home run in the ninth inning and Jared Jones tossed 6.0 one-hit shutout innings with eight punchouts, as the Indianapolis Indians won their third straight over the Omaha Storm Chasers at Werner Park on Friday night, 3-1.
A ninth-inning lead-off walk to Ryan Vilade by Dylan Coleman (L, 1-3) set the table in a game notched at one apiece. Two batters later, Gorski launched the go-ahead two-run homer 381 feet onto the berm in left-center field. The blast was Gorski’s second home run in six games with Indianapolis, earning the Indians 11th last at-bat win of the season.
The Indians (66-74, 33-33) struck first in the third inning. With runners on the corners, Chris Owings grounded into a fielder’s choice, beating the throw to avoid a double play and plate Malcom Nuñez. It was the lone run allowed by Omaha starter Anthony Veneziano in 6.0 innings of work.
Jones stole the show with 6.0 shutout innings, yielding just one hit and a walk with eight punchouts. It marked his second consecutive scoreless quality start. Over his last two starts, the right-hander has held opponents scoreless while allowing just five hits with 12 strikeouts in 13.0 innings pitched.
The Storm Chasers (63-74, 25-40) were held without a hit for four consecutive innings before breaking through to score the tying run in the eighth. Nate Eaton led off the frame with a walk and proceeded to steal second and third base. Angelo Castellano followed with an RBI single off Cody Bolton (W, 3-4).
Travis MacGregor (S, 2) earned his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to slam the door.
The Indians and Storm Chasers will play the penultimate game of their six-game set on Saturday night at Werner Park at 6:35 PM ET. RHP Wil Crowe (1-0, 4.08) will take the hill for Indianapolis against Omaha’s RHP Jonathan Bowlan (5-6, 5.46).

• Indiana’s defense has been up to the task so far in 2023 with just two offensive touchdowns allowed in two games played. Ohio
State scored both touchdowns and kicked three field goals, while Indiana State’s only score came on a defensive touchdown.
• With 2.0 tackles for loss in each of the first two games of the season, redshirt senior Andre Carter’s 4.0 TFLs are the most by a

and led five of Indiana’s seven scoring drives, which included a 93-yard scoring drive in the third quarter.
• The Hoosier roster features 24 transfer scholarship student-athletes for the 2023 season and a total of 36 scholarship newcomers,
which is among the most in the FBS. The eight returning starters are among a handful of FBS programs with single-digit returning
starters entering 2023.
• Head coach Tom Allen won his 31st career game over Indiana State in Week 2 and is just two wins shy of joining the top five
winningest coaches in program history. Of the 31 wins, 12 have come in one possession games, including a 4-1 mark in overtime.
LOUISVILLE NOTES
The University of Louisville football team plays its second neutral site game of the season when it travels to Indianapolis to face Indiana in Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 1. The noon kickoff will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The Cardinals opened its home schedule in impressive fashion with a 56-0 win over Murray State on Thursday night. The Cardinals moved to 2-0 on the season for the first time since the 2017 season when it began the year at 4-0. The Louisville defense recorded its first shutout since blanking Syracuse 30-0 during the 2020 season. It also marked the first shutout in a home opener since a 28-0 win over Kentucky in 2004. The Cardinals held the Racers to 166 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers. Louisville records 690 yards of total offense while holding Murray State to 166 yards. The 690 yards is Louisville’s 9th highest total in a game, and the most since the Cards posted 687 against Duke in 2021. The 524-yard margin in total offense is the second highest in a game, trailing only the 596-yard margin vs. Murray State on Sept. 30, 2017. RB Jawhar Jordan rushed for 135 yards on seven carries, scoring on runs of 72 yards and one yard. Jordan logged his fifth career 100-yard rushing game, all coming in the last seven games. Jordan is the first Louisville player since Javian Hawkins in 2020 to have rushing touchdowns of 70+ yards in back-to-back games. Jordan’s 19.3-yards-per-carry average vs. Murray State is the sixth highest in UofL history for a player with a 100-yard game. Wide receiver Jamari Thrash continued his fast start with three receptions for 82 yards and a 73-yard touchdown reception. The Georgia State transfer has four touchdowns (3 receiving) in his first two games and is averaging 17.0 yards per reception. Quarterback Jack Plummer was an efficient 16-of-22 for 247 yards and a touchdown in the win, and completed the longest pass for a touchdown when he connected with Thrash for a 73-yard touchdown. Safety Devin Neal is the first Louisville player to recover a fumble and intercept a pass in the same game since Kei’Trel Clark did it vs. Syracuse on Nov. 20, 2020. The Cardinals held the Racers to 166 yards of total offense, the lowest total by an opponent since Cincinnati was limited to 138 yards in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl last season. The Cardinals saw nine quarterbacks on the field in the win over Murray State, a program record. Five different quarterbacks also completed a pass in the game, which was also the most in school history. Prior to this season, four quarterbacks had completed a pass in an entire season only four times – in 1955, 1983, 2014, and 2018.

(PURDUE NOTES)
STORY LINES
Fresh off a road victory at Virginia Tech, Purdue Football returns home for another matchup with an ACC opponent. The Boilermakers host Syracuse in front of a sellout crowd under the lights of Ross-Ade Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC. • The matchup will be the first soldout game in the newly-renovated Ross-Ade Stadium, which saw its capacity increased to 61,441 heading into the facility’s 100th season. • The Boilermakers and Orange are meeting for the second straight season, as Syracuse protected its home turf in 2022 to even the all-time series at 1-1. • Saturday’s contest wraps up Purdue’s non-conference schedule, while also beginning a three-game homestand. Four of the Boilermakers’ five September games are at home. • The Boilermakers are coming off a 24-17 victory at Virginia Tech, picking up the first win of the Ryan Walters era. Purdue endured a mid-game weather delay that lasted five hours and 27 minutes with kickoff starting at 12:21 p.m. and the game ending at 8:56 p.m. • In the victory over the Hokies, Purdue held Virginia Tech to 11 yards for the fewest rush yards allowed in program history; the Boilermakers recorded 9.0 tackles-for-loss, totaling a loss of 54 yards. • Tim Stratton will be Purdue’s honorary captain for Saturday night’s matchup. In 2000, Stratton was named the inaugural recipient of the John Mackey Award, presented to the nation’s best tight end. • Purdue is facing an ACC team for the second straight week, one of only five Power 5 teams to play nonconference games against Power 5 opponents in consecutive weeks. • The Boilermakers have not committed a turnover in either game this season, one of only nine teams nationwide and one of only two Big Ten teams (Penn State) to accomplish the feat. • Deion Burks leads the Big Ten and ranks second nationally with 34 yards per catch. • Dillon Thieneman paces the conference and ranks third in the country with two interceptions, becoming the first freshman in Purdue history to tally an INT in each of his first two games. • Returning to his home state, Cam Allen (Bluefield, Virginia) made his 11th interception as a Boilermaker, moving him into a tie for third on Purdue’s all-time list. • Last week’s win over Virginia Tech marked just the second time over the past 10 years that Purdue won a game without a passing TD, joining last season’s victory at No. 21 Minnesota.
(SYRACUSE NOTES)
After starting the season with a pair of home games, Syracuse goes on the road for the first time to face Purdue on Saturday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. in West Lafayette, Indiana. It will be the Orange’s only road contest of the month and a rematch of one of last year’s most exciting games of the season.
“It’ll be a good experience,” head coach Dino Babers said on the team’s opportunity to play at Purdue. “We’ll get our first travel away from Syracuse and get our traveling team together. Ross-Ade Stadium is no joke, I’ve worked there. It’s a big game, natural turf. It might be one of the best natural turf (fields) there is. We should be excited to go play in that building.”
The atmosphere will be a rare one in West Lafayette. Ross-Ade stadium didn’t install permanent lights until prior to the 2017 season, after occasionally bringing in temporary lighting. Purdue has hosted less than 20 night games in program history.
Babers’ mind wasn’t just on football when he addressed the media on Monday for his weekly press conference. He began his comments with a reflection on the events of September 11, 2001 and how his team honors those who lost their lives that day.
“I’d like to start off, with it being 9/11, to just recognize that tragedy in American history and how we worked to overcome all the things that happened since then together for the country,” Babers said. “One of the things that we’ve done in this program – for a long time we have not alerted anyone else to but I’m going to alert you to now – is our football team, not everyone, our football team newcomers, every year for 9/11, we have what we call our annual 9/11 play push. We actually play push 3,000 yards as a team, one yard for every life, 2,977 lives lost in that tragedy. It’s something that we do to bring out pride and honor and for the most part, everyone on our football team has done it, including some of the coaches.”
On the field, Babers has seen the ‘Cuse wide receiving corps step up in the first two games of the season. Ten different players caught a pass in the season opener against Colgate, which was the highest number for Syracuse since 10 players had a catch at UConn last season. Six different players caught a touchdown pass against the Raiders, which is the highest single-game total in program history. Ten players also caught passes in the win against Western Michigan.
“I think that whole group has been doing a nice job,” Babers said. “Coach Johnson is in charge of them. There’s a lot of guys stepping up in that group. There’s a lot of pride in that group that they all want each other to do well.”
While the offense has clicked through the first two games, the defense has allowed just seven points and ranks sixth in the FBS in total defense, allowing 212.0 yards per game. The group will face a Boilermaker offense that put up 427 yards of total offense in a 24-17 win at Virginia Tech last Saturday. Quarterback Hudson Card, who is in his first year at Purdue after transferring from Texas, was 23-for-34 for 248 yards against the Hokies. His 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter broke a 17-17 tie and gave Purdue the victory.
“I can tell you right now, Card is good,” Babers said. “The guy is good. There’s no doubt about it. He will be the best quarterback we have faced so far.”
Saturday’s game is a rematch of last year’s dramatic 32-29 come-from-behind victory for the Orange in the JMA Wireless Dome. While some of the personnel may be the same, there are several changes ‘Cuse will have to prepare for. Not only does Purdue have a new quarterback, but the Boilermakers have a new coach as well. Ryan Walters was named the 37th head coach in Purdue history in December 2022 after spending the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Illinois.
“Any time you have a change in the staff it’s critical to watch a lot of tape from a lot of places,” Babers said. “You have to go back and watch the personnel from the game last year and try to get a feel for them. Then, understand that they’re being coached by somebody totally different, and they want different things than they wanted before. It doesn’t really make it fair to watch the old tape with the old coaches. So, it makes for a lot of homework on our part. But it’s going to be a brand new deal for us. We can’t base it off last year.”
The Orange’s win over Purdue last season was the third of six-straight wins for Syracuse to start the 2022 season. Syracuse is 2-0 for the second-straight year and third time since 2018 and looking to repeat last year’s early season success.

IRISH NOTES
IRISH ITEMS – BY THE NUMBERS 1 Notre Dame and Central Michigan will be meeting for the first time as football opponents on Saturday afternoon in Notre Dame Stadium. 4 In Marcus Freeman’s debut season in 2022, Notre Dame defeated four Associated Press ranked teams: No. 5 Clemson, No. 16 BYU, No. 16 Syracuse and No. 20 South Carolina, which matched Terry Brennan (1954) for the most ranked wins in a coaching debut season at Notre Dame and was most in one single season for the program since 2018. 10 Sam Hartman has thrown 10 touchdown passes through the first three games this season, which no other Notre Dame quarterback had accomplished. The previous high was nine by Jimmy Clausen (2009) and Brady Quinn (2006). 29 Notre Dame extended its regular-season winning streak against Atlantic Coast Conference teams to 29 against NC State last weekend. The Irish have not lost a regular-season game to an ACC school since a 41-8 loss at Miami in 2017. See page 10 for more. 32 The Irish will wear helmet stickers for the game against CMU to honor #32, Johnny Lujack, who passed away July 25, 2023, at the age of 98. Lujack was Notre Dame’s second Heisman Trophy winner in 1947 and led the Irish to three national championships. The sticker is a blue and gold shamrock adorned with Lujack’s number at Notre Dame – 32. 37 With four more passing touchdowns at NC State last weekend, Sam Hartman extended his FBS-leading streak of games being responsible for at least one touchdown to 37 contests. 40 Dating back to the Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina to end the 2022 season, Notre Dame has scored at least 40 points in four consecutive games. In the history of Notre Dame football, the Irish have never scored 40 or more points in five straight games. TWO-DEEP TIDBITS – OFFENSE Jayden Thomas, the leading returning receiver from 2022, has proved that role accurate in ‘23. Thomas leads the team with 125 receiving yards, which includes three third-down catches. Deion Colzie continued his penchant for key third down conversions against Navy and also turned a short pass to the outside into a 25-yard touchdown reception. Chris Tyree has shifted to wide receiver after three years as a running back with the Irish. He caught a 24-yard touchdown against TSU and keyed Notre Dame’s two-minute drill at NC State with a career-high 65-yard reception, which led to a ND score on the next play. True freshman Jaden Greathouse nabbed a 35-yard touchdown pass on his first career touch against Navy. He followed up with a 20-yard scoring catch later in the game. After tacking on a 13-yard scooring grab against NC State, he and Holden States own the team lead with three receiving touchdowns each. Joe Alt, the son of former NFL All-Pro John Alt, is one of four team captains for the Irish this season, has been selected as a consensus preseason All-American and is on the Outland, Lombardi and Walter Camp Award watch lists. See page 7 for more on Alt. Pat Coogan made his first career start in just his second game played against Navy. He has helped the Irish average 194.0 rushing yards per game. Zeke Correll has played guard and center during his career and now enters the season as one of the top snappers in the nation. He will make his 26th-career start on the Irish offensive line at NC State and is on the Rimington Award watch list. Rocco Spindler joined Coogan to make his first career start at guard for the Irish against Navy and helped pave the way for 221 rushing yards against Tennessee State. Blake Fisher combines with Joe Alt to give the Irish offensive line two of the top tackles in the nation. See page 7 for more on Alt and Fisher. Mitchell Evans caught a career-high four passes for 61 yards against TSU. Evans also plays a key role in some of Notre Dame’s short yardage packages by taking direct snaps. He rushed for five first downs and a touchdown from under center last season. Holden Staes is coming off his career-best game at NC State which included four catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Both of those touchdowns came from more than 30 yards (30, 45). Rico Flores Jr. has shown a penchant for getting open in the preseason and posted the first reception of the game against Tennessee State, finishing the game with two catches for 31 yards. Sam Hartman has thrown 10 touchdown passes in the first three games of the season, becoming the first ND quarterback to toss 10 scoring throws in a season’s first three games. See page 6 for much more on Hartman. Audric Estimé has increased his rushing performance in each game this season, posting 95 against Navy, 116 vs. Tennessee State and a career-best matching 134 yards last weekend against NC State. Estimé will be looking to rush for 100 yards in three consecutive games for the first time in his career this weekend vs. CMU. Jadarian Price’s first career carry against Navy was a 19-yard touchdown. His second career catch was a 40-yard touchdown reception vs. Tennessee State. Spencer Shrader showed off his incredibly strong leg at NC State, connecting on a Notre Dame record 54-yard field goal in the first quarter, then just missing a 56-yard attempt later the in the game. The 56-yard effort had plenty of distance and hit the left upright. Bryce McFerson has a booming leg showed that off against NC State. He punted six times in the game, averaging 50.7 yards per attempt. He also posted a career-best 59- yard punt against the Wolfpack. Michael Vinson is in his sixth year at Notre Dame and is one of the top long snappers in the nation. He has developed into a clear leader not only for the Irish special teams, but the entire roster.
TWO-DEEP TIDBITS – DEFENSE Jordan Botelho has been active through three games from his defensive end position with six tackles, one sack and a quarterback hurry. Joshua Burnham leads the team in tackles-for-loss with two, while also posting a sack and two quarterback hurries. Rylie Mills is No. 10 on The Athletic’s Freak List for his work in the weight room and has been disruptive on the defensive line so far in 2023. Mills’ timely sack against Navy in the fourth quarter pushed the Midshipmen back from the four-yard line that eventually led to a field goal. Jason Onye posted an early-career-best game with five tackles against Tennessee State. He also blocked his first career field goal, preventing TSU points after the Irish fumbled a kick return and gifted the Tigers the ball at the ND 12-yard line. Howard Cross III is second on the team with 15 tackles coming from the middle of the Irish defensive line. Javontae Jean-Baptiste single handedly ended a Navy drive with back-to-back tackles at the line in the second quarter. He followed up his ND debut against the Midshipmen with three tackles and a quarterback hurry against TSU. Nana Osafo-Mensah is a leader in the defensive line group and a steady force against the run. Marist Liufau enters his second full season as a starter in 2023 and has been all over the field through the first three games of the year. He is second on the team with 15 tackles and owns two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. JD Bertrand is the defacto leader of the Irish defense, and is one of the most prolific tackling linebackers of the last 20 years. See page 7 for more on Bertrand. Jack Kiser does a little bit of everything for the Irish defense, and can appear on the line or even as a spot safety if necessary. He leads the team with 16 tackles and also owns two quarterback hurries. Cam Hart was voted a captain by his teammates this season, and looks poised for a highly productive final season with the Irish. Among the most veteran defenders on the team (38 games played) Hart has 73 career tackles, 16 PBUs and two interceptions. DJ Brown returned for a fifth year and is the ‘quarterback’ of the back seven for Notre Dame’s defense. Brown picked off his fourth career pass against NC State last weekend. Xavier Watts has grown from a rookie wide receiver into one of Notre Dame’s starting safeties. He nabbed his first career interception last weekend against NC State, setting the Irish up in the redzone. Benjamin Morrison was a Freshman All-American last season, and is focused on taking his game to an even higher level in 2023. He intercepted his first pass of the season at NC State. See page 7 for more on Morrison. The Irish defense is filled with talented younger players eager to make their mark with increased playing time in 2023. Jaylen Sneed loves to pressure the quarterback and get downhill on running situations. Christian Gray, a true freshman, has earned the trust of position coach Mike Mickens to be listed as a back up to Benjamin Morrison. While those talented younger players are ready for their moment, there are three key veterans in the back seven of the defense who will play key roles. Clarence Lewis has played in 40 games at Notre Dame and scored his first career touchdown on a 33-yard interception return against Tennessee State. Thomas Harper, a transfer from Oklahoma State, made his first start in an Irish uniform against TSU and followed up with a team-high seven tackles at NC State. Antonio Carter II jumps up a level from Rhode Island and will provide the Irish safeties depth and contribute across the Irish special teams. Dylan Devezin, a sophomore walk-on quarterback, has seized the team’s holder role and has earned Spencer Shrader’s – and special teams coordinator Marty Biagi’s –trust.
(CENTRAL MICHIGAN NOTES)
Central Michigan plays its second NCAA Power-5 opponent of the 2023 season in Notre Dame. • In No. 9/11 ranked Notre Dame, the Chippewas play their highest ranked opponent in eight years (No. 2 Michigan State on Sept. 26, 2015). • Notre Dame and Central Michigan meet for the first time in college football. • Head Coach Jim McElwain has guided the Chippewas to two bowl games (2019 New Mexico Bowl and 2021 Sun Bowl) and two winning seasons in each of the past three full years. He is in his fifth year at CMU.
ABOUT THE CHIPPEWAS Central Michigan plays its third game of the 2023 season after registering a 45-42 victory over New Hampshire last Saturday in its home opener. CMU dropped its season opener at Michigan State last Friday, Sept. 1, 31-7, in East Lansing. Placekicker Tristan Mattson converted a field goal as time expired to give the Chippewas their first victory of the year. CMU led the entire game, led 42-28 with nine minutes to play, but New Hampshire battled back with big plays. Quarterback Bert Emanuel, Jr. was named the MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week after he was responsible for four touchdowns (2 rushing/2 passing) and finished with 294 total yards. On the day, he ran for 101 yards on 21 carries, threw for a career-high 193 yards while completing seven of 19 passes. His two rushing scores came on a 66-yard touchdown on his second carry of the game and a 5-yard run in the second quarter. Running back Marion Lukes earned MAC West Division Special Teams Player of the Week after he scored on an 86-yard kickoff return. Other Chippewas turning in impressive performances included running back Myles Bailey (21-108 yards, 1 TD), wide receiver Chris Parker (3-124 yards), and defensive back Donte Kent (10 tackles). The Chippewas are hoping to erase the memory of a 2022 season which saw it finish 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas finished No. 129 in the nation out of 130 teams in turnover margin (-1.50), 128th nationally in turnovers lost (28) and 130th in fumbles lost (18). During the season, the 2022 Chippewas also lost the majority of their playmakers on offense due to injuries, including two of their top wide receivers, an NFL bound tight end (Joel Wilson) and their top three running backs. Still, Central Michigan had an opportunity to become bowl eligible late in the season and had several opportunities to get to six wins. Central Michigan is attempting to get back to its winning ways against one of the most daunting schedules the school has ever played. Six of the Chippewas’ 2023 opponents played in bowl games last season: Notre Dame (Gator Bowl), South Alabama (R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl), Toledo (RoofClaim.com), Eastern Michigan (Famous Idaho Potato Bowl), Buffalo (Camellia Bowl), and Ohio (Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl). The Chippewas only play five home games and seven road contests.
Last season’s results were a drastic change from the course that Head Coach Jim McElwain has put the Chippewas on since his arrival in 2019. In his first year guiding the program in 2019, he took over a team that finished 1-11 and 0-8 in MAC play and led the Chippewas to one of the nation’s top turnarounds, an 8-6 record, 6-2 in the MAC with a berth in the 2019 New Mexico Bowl. After a COVID-shortened 2020 season, he led CMU to a 9-4 overall, 6-2 MAC record and berth in the 2021 Sun Bowl, where the Chippewas closed the year on a five-game win streak, including a 24-21 Sun Bowl win over Washington State. Central Michigan returned 14 players who started a significant amount of games in 2022, including five on offense and nine on defense. Several transfers arrive who will play significant roles in the coming season, several players return from injury, and a variety of players have improved over the offseason and are ready to contribute. CMU HISTORY AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS In Notre Dame, Central Michigan plays its highest nationally ranked team since Sept. 26, 2015 when it played at No. 2/2 Michigan State. Notre Dame will be Central Michigan’s third nationally ranked opponent that it will play in the last two years and 13 games. Historically, the Chippewas have registered two wins over nationally ranked teams: at No. 22/17 Oklahoma State on Sept. 10, 2016 (30- 27) and at No. 18/19 Michigan State on Sept. 14, 1991. Here is a record of Central Michigan’s last five games against nationally ranked teams: Date Opponent Score Sept. 24, 2022 at Penn State (14/15) L, 33-14 Sept. 1, 2022 at Oklahoma State (12/11) L, 58-44 Sept. 7, 2019 at Wisconsin (17/16) L, 61-0 Sept. 29, 2018 at Mich. State (20/18) L, 31-20 Sept. 10, 2016 at Oklahoma State (22/17) W, 30-27 CMU SUCCESS AGAINST POWER-FIVE OPPONENTS Since 2009, Central Michigan has won six games against FBS Power-Five opponents. CMU’s last victory over a Power-Five team came on December 31, 2021 against Washington State (24-21) in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. Those victories have come against Washington State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Iowa, and Michigan State.
************BALL STATE FOOTBALL NOTES VS. INDIANA STATE****************
(CARDINALS NOTES)
After a two-week trek through the Southeastern Conference, Ball State returns to Scheumann Stadium for its 2023 home opener against state rival Indiana State. The Cardinals have won six of the past seven meetings against Indiana State, but haven’t played the Sycamores since a 27-20 home defeat to ISU in 2014. In a rivalry series conducted 60 times in the 19th century, the Cardinals and Sycamores have played just three times since 2000 — 2002, 2003 and 2014, all at Scheumann Stadium. But for turnovers against its early SEC foes, Ball State has had a successful early run with ball control and minimizing mistakes. Ball State’s seven penalties are so far the fewest in the MAC and rank ninth in the country. Similarly, the Cardinals’ 26.6 penalty yards per game lead the MAC and rank seventh nationally. Ball State’s average time of possession is 34:45, second in the MAC to Northern Illinois (36:23) and currently 10th among FBS teams. The Cardinals showed well against Kentucky and Georgia, but were undone by second quarter turnovers in each game. Kentucky and Georgia both scored on special teams touchdowns, too. In all, Ball State allowed 45 points over two games directly tied to second quarter turnovers and special teams touchdowns. Otherwise, Ball State played within a combined 38-17 score in the first, third and fourth quarters. The Cardinals defense was stout while allowing fewer than half of Kentucky and Georgia’s total points and minimizing big plays. Kentucky reached the red zone just twice. Ball State led the possession battle in both games and out dualed Kentucky with 18 first downs to 17. WHAT A WIN MEANS: The Cardinals will move into the win column for the first time this season and win their home opener for the 13th time in 14 seasons. Last year’s home-opening defeat to Western Michigan ended a run of 12 straight home-opening wins. The Cardinals will defeat Indiana State for the seventh in eight meetings since 1988. Mike Neu will capture his 34th victory as head coach of his alma mater, matching Brady Hoke’s win total from 2003-08 — tied for seventh in career coaching wins at Ball State.
INSIDE THE SERIES: INDIANA STATE The Cardinals and Sycamores met 60 times in the first 68 years of the series, since 1924, but have met just three times since 1991. Since a tie in 1951, the Cardinals have won 27 of the past 43 meetings. 8 Ball State’s 63 meetings with the Sycamores are more than any opponent in program history besides 64 vs. MAC-rival Eastern Michigan. The Cardinals’ 38 wins against ISU are the most against any opponent (37 vs. EMU). VS. MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE Against teams currently in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Cardinals are 58-37-2 (20-13-1 against foes other than Indiana State). Ball State’s biggest win last season came in a 31-0 shutout of MVFC foe Murray State, BSU’s first shutout victory since 2008 vs. Toledo. It was the Cards’ biggest shutout win since a 34-0 blanking of Kent State in 1994. 8 Since 2000, the Cardinals are 5-3 against the MVFC: beat Western Illinois in 2000; lost to Northern Iowa in 2001; beat the Sycamores in 2002 & 2003; lost to North Dakota State in 2006; beat Illinois State in 2013; lost to Indiana State in 2014; beat Murray State last year. BACK TO SCHEUMANN Since a 65-7 win over Butler on Oct. 21, 1967, Ball State has completed 56 seasons with Scheumann Stadium as its home field. Saturday’s game begins the Cardinals’ 57th season at “The Scheu.” The Cardinals have won their home opener at “The Scheu” in 12 of the past 13 seasons.

***************EVANSVILLE WOMEN’S SOCCER***************
VELAZQUEZ’S LATE GOAL NETS UE A 1-1 DRAW AT ILLINOIS STATE
NORMAL, Ill. – University of Evansville sophomore forward Amy Velazquez’s (Avon, Ind./Avon) first career goal in the 82nd minute Friday night helped UE rally for a 1-1 draw at Illinois State at Adelaide Street Field in Normal, Illinois. The match was the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both sides.
Velazquez collected a loose ball inside the penalty area and delivered a left-footed strike through a wall of Redbird defenders to net her first collegiate goal and help UE equalize the match at 1-1, after Evansville conceded a first-half own goal. The Purple Aces nearly left Normal with a win, but sixth-year midfielder Nicole Benati’s strike from 30 yards out in the final minute just stayed above the crossbar.

Set #2 followed a similar script to the opening one as Evansville had the early momentum with a Melanie Feliciano kill giving her team a 3-1 advantage. Chicago State responded with three in a row to take their first lead at 4-3. With the score tied up at 8-8, the Cougars wrestled away a 10-8 lead and would fend off multiple challenges to take a 2-0 match lead.
After CSU opened a 16-12 lead, a kill by Cardona highlighted a run that saw the Aces get within one (18-17), but once against, the Cougars put together a late run to finish the set.
Game 3 – Chicago State 25, UE 13
Another close set in the early going with six ties leading to a 7-7 score. The Cougars slowly opened a 14-9 lead and would cruise to a 25-13 victory to clinch the match. In total, they completed the set on a 16-5 run.

Game 3 – Tennessee 25, UE 23

Things looked to be going the Volunteers’ way when a kill put them up 17-14, forcing a time out by Evansville. Madisyn Steele immediately registered a kill while Luana Gazda Kuhn posted an ace to get UE within one. With the score tied up at 18-18, UE reeled off four in a row as Maddie Hawkins picked up an ace to put the Aces in position for the set win. VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN TOURNAMENT OPENER TO SIUE
The Valpo volleyball team opened its final preconference tournament of the 2023 season at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational, falling in four sets (28-26, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20) to SIUE.
How It Happened
Valpo jumped out in front in the opening set, scoring the first three points and leading throughout the first half of the set. The Cougars put together a 6-1 run mid-set, however, to pull in front, 16-14.
The Beacons responded
The Beacons responded with a 7-1 run of their own, which included two kills from fifth-year middle Miranda Strongman (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central [LIU]), to regain a 21-17 advantage.
The lead was still four points at 22-18, leaving Valpo three points from claiming the opener, before SIUE reeled off five points in a row to go in front, 23-22. The Beacons were unable to regain the lead from there, and despite holding off three set points, the Cougars eventually took the set on their fourth chance.
It was SIUE with a quick start to the second set, scoring six of the frame’s first eight points. But Valpo answered immediately, turning a 7-3 deficit into an 18-13 lead with a 15-6 stretch which featured six consecutive servers serving multiple times in a row. The big push came at 13-13, as the Beacons reeled off five straight points — including back-to-back kills from fifth-year outside Bella Ravotto (Mishawaka, Ind./Marian).
SIUE closed to within two points at 18-16, but a big service run by Strongman — featuring multiple kills from redshirt sophomore right side Sam Warren (Kentland, Ind./South Newton) — restored a significant lead for the Beacons. On its third set point chance, a kill from junior outside Elise Swistek (LaPorte, Ind./New Prairie) finished off the set for Valpo, evening the match at one set each.
Valpo led 11-9 approaching the midway point of set three before an SIUE 8-2 run gave the Cougars control. The Beacons closed back to within 17-15, but five in a row by SIUE shut the door on a comeback attempt as SIUE took a 2-1 lead in the match.
A 6-1 run in the early stages of the fourth set turned a one-point Valpo edge into a 12-8 lead for SIUE. The Beacons were unable to cut the deficit to less than two points the rest of the way.
Inside the Match
Four Valpo players ended up with exactly 10 kills apiece, highlighted by senior middle Mallory Januski (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) doing so on .474 hitting, needing just 19 swings.
Strongman posted a season-best 10 kills on .333 hitting and added three blocks, while Ravotto and Januski tallied 10 terminations each as well.
Redshirt sophomore setter Addy Kois (Osceola, Ind./Penn) handed out 24 assists and senior setter Victoria Bulmahn (McCordsville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) added 21 helpers.
Ravotto and Swistek both finished with double-doubles, registering 17 and 13 digs, respectively. Sophomore libero Emma Hickey (Granger, Ind./Penn) led all players with 19 digs.
Ravotto moved into 12th place in program history in career digs on Friday, as she owns 1,404 career digs — just 72 shy of the program’s top-10 chart.
Valpo out-dug SIUE 66-62 and trailed in kills just 58-52, but the Cougars hit a .252 clip versus Valpo’s .170 hitting percentage as the Beacons committed 26 attack errors — 13 of which were SIUE blocks.
Next Up
Valpo (6-5) looks for a winning end to the nonconference slate on Saturday with its final two matches from Fort Wayne, taking on Miami (Ohio) at 12:30 p.m. CT and the host Mastodons at 6 p.m. CT. Both matches can be seen live on ESPN+.

FIERY HOUNDS OPEN BOBCAT CLASSIC WITH PAIR OF WINS
BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Greyhounds kept rolling on Friday, improving to 8-2 on the season following a pair of victories at the Bobcat Invitational on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College.
The offense was dominant in the wins, hitting .358 in the four-set win over Bowie State before attacking at a .407 clip against the host Bobcats. Sophia Parlanti recorded double-digit kills in both contests, including a match-high 16 against Wesleyan.
UIndy 3, Bowie State 1
Despite dropping the second set, the Greyhounds relatively cruised to a 3-1 victory to open the weekend against the Bulldogs. Lauren Cullison, who attacked at a .652 clip herself, finished with a match-high 15 kills, adding two block assists and one dig.
Marin Dixon earned the start against Bowie State, dishing out 39 assists and recording six assists over the four-setter. The freshman recorded a helper to seven separate Greyhounds, as the team hit .358 in the win.
UIndy dug up nearly half of BSU’s attack attempts, with libero Lauren Peal totaling a career-best 20 scoops. Parlanti also tallied double-digits with 11, killing 13 balls on .267 hitting.
Maddie Berger impressed in her collegiate debut, recording four kills on six attempts after subbing in during the fourth frame.
UIndy 3, West Virginia Wesleyan 0
It was all Hounds in the Friday finale, as the visitors never trailed in their wire-to-wire sweep of the host Bobcats. As impressive as the offense was in the first two sets, setter Claire Morris led an offense that hit .438 in the third frame, including six more kills from Parlanti.
Elizabeth Eads finished with seven kills, totaling 12 on the day, while Sabotin added another seven as the Greyhound middles combined to hit .591 against Wesleyan. Along with Eads, fellow Southside Smackers Cullison and Grace Hegwood split 12 kills between each other.
Morris finished with 38 assists, including kills from Erica Eads and Meredith Simmons, while freshman libero Ellie Spang returned to the lineup with a match-high 14 digs.
Defensively, UIndy limited Wesleyan to .097 hitting, creating a tight block to force 19 arrant Bobcat attacks. The Greyhounds had three blocks, with Hegwood recording the lone solo stop of the evening.
MORE NOTES
Cullison (vs. Bowie State) and Parlanti (vs. Wesleyan) finished with double-figure kills without making an error in their respective contest … while it was the first meeting against Bowie State in program history, UIndy also improved to 3-0 all-time against West Virginia Wesleyan, with all three matchups resulting in Greyhound sweeps … the team’s six attacking errors against Wesleyan is the lowest since it errored four times back on Oct. 26, 2019, in a sweep against McKendree.
UP NEXT
UIndy looks to cap the weekend with two more wins on Saturday morning. First serve against Glenville State is scheduled for 9 a.m., with the Hounds set to face Lock Haven immediately after before returning to the Circle City.

MARIAN POSTS LIGHTS-OUT HITTING PERCENTAGE IN RAPID SWEEP OF HUNTINGTON
Huntington, Ind. – The Marian volleyball team rebounded from their loss on Wednesday with a statement on Friday night, sweeping Huntington on their home floor. Marian’s high-octane offense hit .446 in the win, as the Knights improved to 8-5 on the year and 2-1 in Crossroads League play.
The Knights wasted no time taking control of the first set, going on a 6-0 run after yielding the first point of the match to force an early timeout. Marian continued to attack in two and three point bursts, gaining a double-digit advantage at 14-4 following kills from Khori Dryden. A 4-0 run through a Huntington timeout pushed the Knights in front by 13, and the lead in the set would gradually build to 16 points, as the final rally of the set hit the difference with Marian taking a 25-9 win. Madison Brooks and Jaymison Summers teamed up for a block on the winning point in set one.
Huntington responded by challenging Marian early in the second set, trading points with the Knights throughout first 18 rallies. The Knights were able to break the 9-9 deadlock with back to back kills from Dryden and Averi Lanman, with the pair of spikes providing a 4-0 run when the dust settled after a Forester timeout. Huntington would rally back within two points on two separate occasions after allowing the run, but couldn’t keep up with Marian as Mikayla Christiansen put the set in her own hands as she sparked another 4-0 rally. The run pushed Marian in front 19-13, setting up the final run as Marian ended strong with a solo block from Brooks in the 25-14 victory.
The Knights rotated through their lineup in the final set, falling behind early in the game before using a 4-0 run to get back into system. Dryden and Lanman helped the Knights balloon their lead to seven points as part of a 7-0 run, putting the final game in the sweep out of reach. Huntington would get within five after allowing the run, but were unable to close the game as Marian ended the night by scoring the final five points, taking set three 25-20.
Marian posted an effecient hitting percentage of .446 in the win, and were led in kills by Christiansen’s nine. Gabby Fish and Dryden each had eight kills in the win Emma Lyons led the back row with 10 digs, and Logan Smith posted a Marian-best 15 assists to lead the setters. As a team, Marian had eight blocks, with

*******TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY*******
1903 In their 14-7 victory over Cleveland at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds, the first-place Americans score in every inning, making it 11 consecutive frames that at least one player has crossed the plate. The fledgling American League team will also tally in the first six innings of its next game to extend the scoring streak to 17 straight frames.
1914 The Yankees hire shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh to replace Frank Chance as the team’s skipper. During his 20-game tenure as the player-manager, the 23-year-old infielder will finish the season with a 10-10 record for the sixth-place club.
1922 After listening to excessive bench jockeying from the Giants dugout, Reds’ hurler Adolfo Luque becomes so enraged he throws down his glove and bolts into the New York dugout. The Cuban native, known for his fiery temper, punches Casey Stengel on the jaw and is ordered to return to his bench by the police, who are busy trying to prevent the Polo Grounds overflow crowd from rioting.
1924 Cardinal first baseman Jim Bottomley goes 6-for-6, including two homers, driving in a record twelve runs when the team beats the Dodgers at Ebbets Field, 17-3. The previous mark of 11 RBIs in one game was established in 1892 by today’s opposing Dodger manager, Wilbert Robinson.
1926 En route to a 23-3 rout of the Phillies at the Baker Bowl, the Cardinals cross home plate 12 times during the third inning. The dozen runs establish a franchise record for the Redbirds.
1931 At Rickwood Field, Birmingham Barons starter Ray Caldwell outduels Dizzy Dean to beat the Texas League’s Houston Buffaloes, a Cardinals farm team, 1-0, in Game One of the Dixie Series. The 43-year-old right-hander posted a 19-7 record with an ERA of 3.45 during the regular season for the Southern Association team.
1938 Johnny Rizzo becomes the first Pirates player in franchise history to hit 20 home runs in a season. The 25-year-old rookie outfielder from Texas, who becomes hurt next season, never playing regularly for the Bucs again, finishes the campaign batting .301 with 23 round-trippers and 111 RBIs.
1940 In a 16-4 Browns rout of the Yankees at Sportsman’s Park, Johnny Lucadello becomes the first player in big-league history to hit his first two career home runs from different sides of the plate in the same game. The 21-year-old second baseman, who joins Wally Schang as only the second player in American League history to accomplish the feat, will hit just three more home runs during his six-year career.
1942 The Phillies, bowing to the Cubs in the nightcap of a twin bill, 4-1, become the first major league team to have five consecutive 100-loss seasons. From 1938 to the end of this season, the team will compile a 227-532 (.299) record under three different managers.
1948 Joe DiMaggio’s 300th career homer is the lone run that Detroit starter Fred Hutchinson gives up in his 2-1 complete-game win over New York at Briggs Stadium. The ‘Yankee Clipper’ joins Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott, Jimmie Foxx, Rogers Hornsby, Chuck Klein, and Hank Greenberg as the eighth major leaguer to reach the milestone.
1948 At Cleveland Stadium, Larry Doby’s first-inning grand slam off Sid Hudson proves to be the difference when the Indians hand the Senators their 16th consecutive defeat, 6-3. The four-run homer extends the 24-year-old sophomore outfielder’s hitting streak to 21 games.
1952 Pacific Coast League’s Sacramento manager, former major league All-Star second baseman Joe Gordon, pinch-hits homers in both ends of a doubleheader. The first one, a grand slam, wins the game, 4-1.
1953 A fact-finding committee appointed by the American League approves the relocation of the St. Louis Browns but does not specify any city for the new home for the franchise. In March, the Junior Circuit, by a 5-2 vote, thwarted Bill Veeck’s plan to shift the club to Baltimore, eventually approving the transfer when the controversial owner agrees to give up his interest in the team.
1955 In the eighth inning of the A’s 13-7 victory over Chicago, Kansas City infielder Alex George makes his major league debut at Municipal Stadium. The 16-year-old shortstop handles two chances cleanly and strikes out in his only at-bat in the game.
1960 Warren Spahn pitches a no-hitter, beating the Phillies at County Stadium, 4-0. The 39-year-old southpaw sets an all-time Braves record with 15 strikeouts en route to his 20th victory of the season, marking the tenth time he has reached the plateau.
1963 After winning 19 of their last 20 games, the Cardinals face the first-place Dodgers, needing a victory to tie their opponent in the standings. In front of an enthusiastic Busch Stadium crowd, Stan Musial’s seventh-inning home run, the 475th and last big-league round-tripper of his career, ties the game at 1-1, but LA scores two runs in the ninth to win the game en route to sweeping the three-game series to clinch the pennant. (Ed. Note: Our thanks for inspiring this entry to frequent contributor John Feehan, who attended this game as a passionate 18-year-old Redbird fan. -LP)
1965 In front of only 1,247 fans at Fenway Park, Red Sox right-hander Dave Morehead, the league leader in losses this season with 18, no-hits the visiting Indians, 2-1. On the same day, ninth-place Boston, who will lose 100 games, fire their general manager, Pinky Higgins.
1966 Bob Gibson notches his 20th victory when he goes the distance to beat Chicago at Wrigley Field, 3-1. The Cardinal right-hander becomes the first pitcher in more than forty years to have consecutive 20-win seasons for a second-division team.
1967 In the 11th inning at Connie Mack Stadium, Rick Joseph hits a walk-off grand slam in the Phillies’ 8-4 victory over the Dodgers. Two batters are walked intentionally by Ron Perranoski to face the weak-hitting Philadelphia pinch-hitter, who responds with his first career home run and his only round-tripper this season.
1968 American League President Joe Cronin fires umpires Al Salerno and Bill Valentine, citing their incompetency for their dismissal. The veteran men in blue claim the firings were due to their efforts to organize the Junior Circuit arbitrators after the pair met with their National League counterparts who had formed a union in 1963.
1969 The Red Sox fire skipper Dick Williams with one year left on his contract due to several things, including a lack of communications with the players, according to General Manager Dick O’Connell. Williams led Boston to their Impossible Dream American League pennant as a rookie manager in 1967.
1972 Phillies’ rookie third baseman Mike Schmidt hits his first career home run, breaking Expos’ Balor Moore’s 25 consecutive scoreless inning streak. Michael Jack Schmidt will finish his 18-year career with 548 round-trippers.
1972 Glen Beckert goes 0-for-6 in the Cubs’ 18-5 victory over the Mets at Wrigley Field, leaving 12 men on base to set a new major league mark. The Chicago second baseman strands the bases loaded in the first and seventh, leaves two runners on twice when he bats two times in the team’s seven-run third, and fails to plate other teammates in the fifth and seventh, the first of his two plate appearances in the frame.
1975 Rennie Stennett ties a major league mark established in 1892 with his 7-for-7 performance in a nine-inning game. The Pirates’ second baseman gets two hits in one inning twice, the first and fifth frames, in the Bucs’ 22-0 rout of the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the most one-sided shutout since 1900.
1975 Mike Vail fails to break the major league rookie record for consecutive games with a hit shared by Richie Ashburn (1948, Phillies) and Alvin Dark (1948, Braves). The 23-year-old freshman left fielder has plenty of opportunities to hit safely in his 24th straight game, coming to the plate eight times in the Mets’ 18-inning marathon with Montreal, a 4-3 victory over the Expos at Shea Stadium.
1979 At Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers hold Catfish Hunter Day to honor their future Hall of Fame pitcher, who will retire at the end of the season at 33. A 20-year-old left-hander named Dave Righetti makes his major league debut for the hometown team, giving up three runs on three hits while issuing six walks in five innings against the Tigers.
1980 Mike Norris, en route to a 22-9 record with the second-place A’s, gets his 20th victory of the season when Oakland beats Texas at Arlington Stadium, 4-2. The 25-year-old right-hander will compile a 58-59 career mark during his ten years in the major leagues with Oakland.
1987 Indian first baseman Joe Carter, swiping his career-high 30th base, becomes the tenth major leaguer to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season. Four players, including Mets teammates Howard Johnson and Darryl Strawberry and A’s slugger Jose Canseco, become the newest members of the 30/30 club this season, an accomplishment previously attained only eleven times.
1988 On a wet, dreary night in a game delayed by two hours and 27-minutes, Tom Browning pitches the first perfect game in Reds’ history, striking out eight and allowing only eight balls to leave the infield in his 1-0 victory against the Dodgers. Over three starts, including the perfect game, the 28-year-old southpaw retires 40 consecutive batters – one shy of the major league record established in 1972 by Giants’ right-hander Jim Barr.
1991 Darren Lewis scores four runs and steals three bases without the benefit of getting a hit. In four of his five plate appearances, the Giants’ leadoff hitter reaches base via a walk in San Francisco’s victory over the Braves at Candlestick Park, 8-5.
1993 At the age of 41, Twins’ Dave Winfield becomes the 19th major leaguer to collect 3000 hits when he singles to left off A’s ace Dennis Eckersley in the bottom of the ninth of a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Oakland at the Metrodome Joining Al Kaline, the Minnesota DH becomes the second player to reach the milestone, having never played a day in the minors.
1996 A fifth-inning triple off Royal southpaw Jose Rosado gives Twins Paul Molitor his 3000th hit, becoming the first major leaguer to accomplish the feat with a three-bagger. The ‘Ignitor’ reaches this milestone in the same season in which he also collects 200 hits, making him the only player to accomplish both feats in the same campaign.
1996 Benito Santiago hits a trio of home runs in his three first at-bats in the Phillies’ 6-1 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The 31-year-old native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, also went deep in his last at-bat in yesterday’s contest in Chicago, giving the Philadelphia backstop four consecutive homers in four at-bats.
1997 Phillies hurler Curt Schilling, in a 3-2 victory at Veterans Stadium, whiffs nine Mets to become the thirteenth pitcher in major league history since 1900 to record 300 strikeouts in a season. The right-hander also reaches the milestone next year with Philadelphia and in 2002 with the Diamondbacks.
1998 Tom Gordon ties Jose Mesa’s major league single-season record established in 1995 with his 38th consecutive save. The 30-year-old right-handed closer also sets a franchise mark with his 41st save of the season when the Red Sox beat Baltimore, 4-3.
1998 Cleveland’s Manny Ramirez ties a major league record with homers in four straight at-bats and five in two games. The Indian right fielder, who homered in his final three at-bats last night, goes deep in the first off Twin Bob Tewksbury and takes a 3-2 pitch to left in the fifth for his fifth homer in six at-bats.
1998 Four batters strike out in one inning for only the 30th time in major league history, marking only the 12th time the feat occurs consecutively. Thanks to Randy Knorr’s passed ball, Marlin rookie Kirt Ojala accomplishes the deed in the fourth inning of the Marlins’ 3-2 defeat to the Expos.
1998 In front of 49,891 patrons at San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium, Sammy Sosa ties Mark McGwire by hitting his record-setting 63rd home run. The 434-foot eighth-inning two-out blast off Brian Boehringer is a tie-breaking grand slam, with ‘Slammin’ Sammy collecting all six RBIs when the Cubs beat the Padres, 6-3.
1999 Doug Glanville collects five hits, including a double and a home run, in the Phillies’ 8-6 victory at the Astrodome, ending Houston’s win streak at 12, a franchise record. The 29-year-old center fielder will enjoy another five-hit performance next season against Cincinnati.
2000 With a sixth-inning blast in a 7-6 loss to the hometown Cardinals, Cub outfielder Sammy Sosa joins Mark McGwire (1997-99) as the only major leaguer to hit 50 home runs in three straight seasons. Babe Ruth had three 50+ homer seasons but did not accomplish the feat in consecutive years.
2002 Giant left fielder Barry Bonds walks three times, breaking his own record for bases on balls in a season with 178. Approximately one-third of the free passes given to the San Francisco slugger have been intentional (60 out of 178).
2004 The Red Sox become the fourth team in big league history to sell out an 81-game home season. The Indians (1996-2000), Rockies (1996), and Giants (2000) are the other clubs that have accomplished the feat.
2005 Youppi!, who got his start at Olympic Stadium, is named the first official mascot of the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the first to switch from Major League Baseball to the NHL. The acquisition, reportedly at the cost of six figures, is made possible when the Expos leave the hairy orange arm-waving giant behind in favor of an eagle called “Screech” when they moved to Washington, D.C. to become the Nationals.
2006 Angels center fielder Chone Figgins, in a 12-6 loss to the Rangers in Texas, triples in the ninth inning to become the fifth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle. ‘Figgy’ joins Jeff DaVanon (2004), Dave Winfield (1991), Dan Ford (1979), and Jim Fregosi (1964, 1968) to accomplish the feat for the Halos.
2006 The Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston’s grand reopening ceremony for its Roxbury facility, which underwent a $7-million renovation, has some community leaders upset with its new name unveiled at the event. The previous Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey created the foundation that donated $3 million to renovate the facility, but some in the minority neighborhood believe it’s wrong to name the clubhouse after him because of his racially motivated policies, including not signing Jackie Robinson and the team becoming the last to integrate.
2006 Stealing second base in the first inning in an 8-5 victory over the Brewers at RFK, Alfonso Soriano becomes the fourth player in major league history in a single season to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases. The Nationals’ outfielder joins Jose Canseco (1988), Barry Bonds (1996), and Alex Rodriguez (1998) as the only players to record 40-40 seasons.
2007 Todd Jones becomes the 21st major leaguer to record 300 career saves. The milestone doesn’t come easy as the Tigers’ closer gives up three hits and a run in Detroit’s 6-4 win over the Twins at the Metrodome.
2007 David Wright, homering in the seventh inning of a 10-6 loss to Philadelphia at Shea Stadium, becomes the 30th member of the 30-30 club. The New York third baseman, returning to the dugout, is greeted by hitting coach Howard Johnson, who, along with Darryl Strawberry, are the other Mets to have stolen thirty bases and hit 30 homers in the same season.
2007 In a dramatic at-bat, Jim Thome becomes the third major leaguer this season and the 23rd overall to hit 500 career home runs. The historic homer comes in the bottom of the ninth on a full count as the White Sox DH strokes a two-run walk-off round-tripper to beat the Angels at U.S. Cellular Field, 9-7.
2007 Washington announces that the press box in Nationals Park, the team’s new home scheduled to open next season, will be named the “Shirley Povich Media Center,” in honor of the late Hall of Fame Baseball writer. The Washington Post’s long-time sports columnist and reporter covered the Senators’ first World Series championship in 1924 and continued to write for the paper until his death in 1998.
2008 Derek Jeter becomes the all-time hits leader at the soon-to-be-demolished Yankee Stadium. The team’s shortstop and captain surpass Lou Gehrig’s record with a first-inning single in a 6-2 loss to the White Sox, bringing his total to 1,270 at the 85-year-old ballpark.
2009 The Tigers pay tribute to 91-year-old Ernie Harwell, their long-time broadcaster (1960-2002), who recently revealed he has inoperable cancer. During the 4-3 victory over Kansas City, a ceremony in the third inning includes a three-minute video tribute followed by the Hall of Fame announcer thanking the admiring and supportive fans attending the game at Comerica Park.
2010 Nyjer Morgan, following appeals, will serve an eight-game suspension in place of the two original bans that totaled 15 games. Nationals outfielder, initially given a seven-game suspension for deliberately throwing a ball into the stands, is suspended for another eight games the following week for instigating a brawl with Florida.
2012 The Orioles, with their 9-5 victory over Oakland, are assured of having their first winning season since the team finished first in the AL East in 1997. The Birds will finish the campaign with a 93-69 record for a second-place finish but will earn a spot in the postseason as the play-in Wild Card team.
2014 With an 8-2 win over the Blue Jays, the Orioles cop their first AL East crown since 1997 when Davey Johnson managed the club to 98 victories. The Camden Yards victory marks the earliest Baltimore has clinched a division title (151st game) since 1971, and the first time the Birds had captured the flag at home in 35 years.
