DENARD ROBINSON AND BRAYLON EDWARDS ARE AMONG FORMER MICHIGAN PLAYERS SUING NCAA AND BIG TEN NETWORK
Former Michigan football stars Denard Robinson and Braylon Edwards are suing the NCAA and Big Ten Network with other former Wolverines players, claiming they lost out on more than $50 million during their college careers because of the association’s now-lifted ban on athletes being compensated for name, image and likeness.
The federal class-action antitrust lawsuit, dated Monday, was filed in the Eastern District of Michigan on behalf of all Michigan football players who played before 2016. It also includes former Wolverines players Mike Martin and Shawn Crable as plaintiffs.
The NCAA and major college conferences are in the process of trying to settle three antitrust lawsuits related to athlete compensation for name, image and likeness. They have a settlement agreement in place to pay $2.78 billion in damages to hundreds of thousands of college athletes, dating back to 2016.
The NCAA changed its rules in 2021 to allow athletes to cash in on their fame through sponsorship and endorsement deals after decades of prohibition.
At a hearing last week, the federal judge overseeing those cases declined to grant preliminary approval of the deal and kicked it back to attorneys to address her concerns with certain aspects of the agreement.
The Michigan lawsuit aims to recoup what notable stars such as Robinson and Edwards were denied when they played, and it claims the players should be compensated for the highlights and replays of their exploits that are still used by television networks.
“These iconic moments have been repeatedly shown and replayed on BTN (Big Ten Network) and related networks, helping continue the fascination and passion of the sport. They have significantly contributed to the revenue generated by the NCAA and its partners,” the lawsuit said.
The NCAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Robinson was a record-breaking quarterback for Michigan from 2009-12 who was given the nickname Shoelace because he played with untied cleats. He was also depicted on the cover of the last EA Sports NCAA video game before the series was discontinued for a decade because of the first lawsuit targeting the NCAA’s ban on NIL compensation. The game returned this year as College Football ’25, with players being paid to have their names and likenesses used.
“They made hundreds of millions off the Michigan brand. The Michigan brand, I’d argue, is the most valuable in college sports. They made hundreds of millions of dollars, BTN made millions, and these guys didn’t get any of it,” Michigan-based attorney Jim Acho told the AP. “That’s just wrong, and it’s not just wrong it’s unlawful.”
Robinson recently had worked as a football staffer for the school but was let go in May after an arrest for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Edwards played from 2001-04 and is considered one of the greatest receivers in school history. He was an All-American who went on to become a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns.
Martin played defensive line for the Wolverines from 2008-11. Crable played linebacker from 2003-07.
Acho said it is too speculative to know if approval of the NCAA’s settlement agreement will impact this new lawsuit.
“And it’s too speculative for me to hold off on filing,” he said.

NFL TRIES TO TACKLE TACKLING WITH A NEW NEXT GEN STATISTIC
Every offensive play in the NFL provides a trove of statistics accounting for the yards gained or lost on every throw or run.
Quantifying defensive performance has always been a more difficult proposition outside of splash plays like sacks and takeaways. The official tackle stats tracked by statisticians with binoculars in the press box can’t account for the quality of the play and tackles that are missed.
That led the NFL Next Gen Stats department to seek a new measurement based on the loads of data generated by tracking equipment to quantify nearly every aspect of the tackle.
“When you look at our toolbox of metrics that can contextualize and tell the stories of the games within the game, we feel like tackling is an area that really hasn’t been analyzed in good enough stats beyond a tackle was made or it wasn’t made,” said Mike Band, the senior manager of research and analytics for NFL Next Gen Stats.
“We can now leverage the (data) to get stats like missed tackles, group tackles, evaluate the quality of tackles. We think we can take tackling quantitatively to an entirely new level of analysis.”
The NFL Next Gen Stats group has teamed up with machine learning engineers from Amazon Web Services to develop an advanced stats model focused on which players are best at making tackles and which are best at breaking them.
Building on the work the NFL has done with AWS with player-tracking data to quantify statistics like completion percentage over expectation, rushing yards over expectation, yards after catch over expectation and defensive coverage classification, it now is doing the same on making and breaking tackles.
“There are 300 million points of data we’re collecting per season for NextGen Stats,” said Julie Souza, the global head of sports at AWS. “We’re only limited by our imagination of what we can ask of it. … Helping people understand what can be a complicated game and bringing new fans into the fold is a great byproduct of this initiative.”
By tracking the location and speed of all 11 defensive players every one-tenth of a second on each play through player tracking data gathered by chips in the players’ pads, the model can measure the probability that a tackle is made.
The stats from 2023 showed that the No. 2 leading tackler last season, Zaire Franklin of Indianapolis, led the NFL with 24 missed tackles, while safety Kevin Byard was the most efficient tackler with a 96.8% success rate.
On the offensive side, Travis Etienne (105), Christian McCaffrey (95) and Kyren Williams (88) were the best at breaking tackles with running backs having the most touches and opportunities. San Francisco’s Deebo Samuel led all receivers with 38 missed tackles, while Lamar Jackson was tops among QBs with 27.
On a per-play basis, the top tackle-breakers among players with at least 100 touches were Pittsburgh’s Jaylen Warren (38.1%), Miami’s De’Von Achane (36.2%) and Tennessee’s Tyjae Spears (34.2%).
The best tackling team in Week 1 headed into the Monday night game was the New England Patriots, who had a 94.3% efficiency rate in their upset win over Cincinnati.
The NextGen Stats group can go beyond missed and broken tackles and use other machine learning stats it has developed with AWS like the expected yards models to measure how many yards over expectation a defensive player saved or gave up on each tackle attempt with the same for offensive players.
While Azeez Al-Shaair and Alex Singleton both ranked in the top five in made tackles, their misses last year were costly with Al-Shaair’s costing Tennessee an estimated 203 extra yards and Singleton’s costing Denver 200 extra yards.
Other stats that can be tracked will be how often teams swarm to the ball with more than three defenders on a tackle and which defenders excel or struggle at different types of tackles like open-field ones, to chase down tackles to downhill tackles with defenders crashing toward the line of scrimmage.
“Any story that unfolds on the field, we want data to be able to help support that story,” said Josh Helmrich, the vice president of football technology for the NFL. “If it’s an offensive story, a defensive story, a running story, a passing story, we want stats that help quantify whatever the result was. So we continually do that. You can only do so much every year, but we try to chip away so that we have a very well-rounded toolkit.”
TOMLIN: STEELERS PREPARING TO START FIELDS VS. BRONCOS
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Justin Fields is in line to start again in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos over Russell Wilson.
“As I sit here today, we’re preparing as Justin Fields is our QB,” Tomlin said, according to team reporter Missi Matthews.
Wilson – who was named the starter before the season – missed Week 1 while dealing with a calf injury. Tomlin said the veteran passer is feeling better but won’t practice until Thursday at the earliest, per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
With Fields under center, Pittsburgh defeated the Atlanta Falcons 18-10 on Sunday thanks to six Chris Boswell field goals. Fields was 17-for-23 passing with 156 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed for 57 yards and suffered a fumble. Tomlin declined to name a starter postgame after being asked if Fields’ performance versus Atlanta could’ve impacted Wilson’s status as QB1.
The matchup versus the Broncos would mark a revenge game for Wilson, who was released by Denver this past offseason before signing a one-year deal with Pittsburgh. The 35-year-old played two seasons with the AFC West club but was only 11-19 as a starter.
Fields also joined the Steelers this year as part of an offseason trade from the Chicago Bears. The 2021 first-rounder flashed his potential in Chicago – mostly because of his rushing ability – but lacked consistency as a passer, which resulted in the Bears moving him before drafting Caleb Williams first overall.
49ERS’ MASON ‘MAD’ AFTER BEING ASKED ABOUT CMC’S INJURY STATUS AGAIN
Jordan Mason put on a show in his first career start on Monday Night Football, but the San Francisco 49ers running back expressed frustration postgame after being asked multiple times about when he knew he’d be starting versus the New York Jets.
Mason originally told ESPN in an on-field postgame interview that he found out he was going to start for an injured Christian McCaffrey “maybe Friday night.” However, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan later said that San Francisco didn’t decide anything until Monday.
When reporters asked Mason about the situation again, he responded, “That question right there is why I’m mad,” according to Kevin Krueger of The Krueg Show.
“That’s why I don’t like talking to the media. Because you say one thing wrong and then … I don’t know, just skip that question.”
McCaffrey was ruled out prior to Monday’s game with calf and Achilles injuries. The star running back said Friday he expected to face the Jets in Week 1. San Francisco listed him as questionable Saturday after he was a limited participant at practice last week.
“I never told Jordan he was going to start,” Shanahan said Monday postgame, according to The 33rd Team. “I told him he had to be ready a bunch, but that might have been (running backs coach) Bobby (Turner) or somebody trying to pump him up. But I knew he was going to have to play a lot.”
Shanahan added: “McCaffrey didn’t have a setback. It was on and off throughout the week. He was able to practice throughout the week, it was always bothering him to a degree. … Today it was bothering him a little too much to where we didn’t feel good about it.”
The 49ers could be penalized if the NFL decides that they were untruthful when reporting McCaffrey’s injury. According to the league’s rulebook, teams must provide “clubs and fans with an accurate description of a player’s availability for the club’s next game” on their game status report.
There’s reportedly a strong possibility that McCaffrey won’t be available for Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Mason went off against the Jets in the 32-19 victory, carrying the ball 28 times for 147 yards and one touchdown. The 25-year-old originally joined the 49ers as an undrafted rookie in 2022. Prior to Monday, he had never posted more than 11 rushing attempts in a game throughout his NFL career.
REPORTS: RAIDERS SIGNING EX-JAGS LB K’LAVON CHAISSON
The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to sign former Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson, per multiple reports Tuesday.
Chaisson, 25, was a first-round pick (20th overall) by the Jaguars in the 2020 NFL Draft. He recorded five sacks and 73 tackles in 57 games (11 starts) with the team from 2020-23.
Chaisson signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers during the offseason but was released on Sept. 3.
The Raiders are dealing with knee injuries to edge rushers Tyree Wilson and Malcolm Koonce. Koonce was placed on injured reserve prior to the season opener, while Wilson was hurt during Sunday’s season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

COMMANDERS SIGN K AUSTIN SEIBERT
The Washington Commanders signed kicker Austin Seibert to a contract on Tuesday.
The move comes one day after fellow kicker Cade York was released. York missed two field goals and saw a kickoff sail out of bounds during Washington’s 37-20 loss at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
York’s release came three weeks after the Commanders traded a conditional seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for the second-year kicker.
“I think it just really goes to show we have really high standards,” Commanders coach Dan Quinn said at his Monday press conference.
Seibert, 27, has made 45 of 56 field-goal attempts in 31 career games with the Browns (2019-20), Cincinnati Bengals (2020), Detroit Lions (2021-22) and New York Jets (2023).
Also on Tuesday, Washington signed rookie offensive tackle Anim Dankwah to its practice squad.
The Commanders host the New York Giants (0-1) on Sunday.

REPORT: VIKINGS DT HARRISON PHILLIPS AGREES TO 2-YEAR EXTENSION
Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth up to $19 million with more than $13 million guaranteed, NFL Network reported on Tuesday.
Phillips, 28, has started all 35 games in which he has played since signing a three-year contract with the Vikings in 2022. He is now locked in with the team through the 2026 season.
Phillips recorded a sack and five tackles during Sunday’s season-opening 28-6 win against the New York Giants.
A 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee, Phillips has totaled 263 tackles, seven sacks and four fumble recoveries in 80 career games (46 starts) with the Buffalo Bills (2018-21) and Vikings.

REPORT: GIANTS ADDING FB JAKOB JOHNSON
The New York Giants are signing fullback Jakob Johnson to a contract, ESPN reported on Tuesday.
The Giants released the versatile veteran during roster cuts on Aug. 27. He was then signed to — and subsequently released from — the practice squad.
Johnson, who plays both tight end and fullback, appeared in 13 games (five starts) last season with the Las Vegas Raiders.
A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Johnson has totaled 19 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in 67 career games (34 starts) with the New England Patriots (2019-21) and Raiders (2022-23).

BROWNS HOLDING TE AUDITIONS AFTER DAVID NJOKU INJURY
The Cleveland Browns plan to audition several free agent tight ends on Tuesday with David Njoku expected to miss multiple games with a high ankle sprain, ESPN reported.
Irv Smith, Tommy Sweeney and Geoff Swaim are among the candidates reportedly heading to Cleveland for interviews and workouts.
Njoku, 28, was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s season-opening 33-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The 2023 Pro Bowl selection finished with four catches for 44 yards.
Veteran Jordan Akins, 32, is the only other tight end on the Browns’ depth chart. He had three catches for 27 yards against the Cowboys, raising his career totals to 169 receptions for 1,914 yards and eight touchdowns in 91 games (30 starts) with the Houston Texans (2018-22) and Browns.
Smith, 26, has 109 catches for 973 yards and 10 TDs in 49 games (21 starts) with the Minnesota Vikings (2019-20, 2022) and Cincinnati Bengals (2023). He was a second-round pick by Minnesota in 2019.
Sweeney, 29, was a seventh-round pick by Buffalo in 2019 and caught 18 passes for 165 yards and one score in 24 games (four starts) with the Bills (2019, 2021-22).
Swaim, 30, was a seventh-round selection by Dallas in 2015 and has 110 receptions for 846 yards and six TDs in 100 games (65 starts) with the Cowboys (2015-18), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019), Tennessee Titans (2020-22) and Arizona Cardinals (2023).

MLB ROUNDUP: MANNY MACHADO BECOMES PADRES’ HOMER KING
Manny Machado jumped atop the Padres’ all-time home run list as San Diego defeated the host Seattle Mariners 7-3 on Tuesday.
Fernando Tatis Jr. also homered and Yu Darvish earned his first victory since May 19 for the Padres, who snapped a two-game skid. Darvish (5-3) tossed five innings of two-run ball. Robert Suarez got the final four outs for his 32nd save.
Machado smacked a two-run shot to center field off George Kirby in the sixth inning, marking his 164th home run with the Padres and giving San Diego a 5-2 lead in the process. Nate Colbert was the Padres’ previous home run leader, going deep 163 times for the franchise from 1969-74.
Cal Raleigh and Luke Raley went deep for the Mariners, who lost for just the second time in their past six games. Kirby (11-11) gave up five runs in five-plus innings.
Cubs 6, Dodgers 3
Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in two runs to go along with spectacular defense in center field and visiting Chicago took advantage of three Los Angeles errors in the eighth inning to rally for a victory.
The Cubs scored five times in the eighth, when the Dodgers had throwing errors from catcher Austin Barnes and center fielder Tommy Edman as well as a fielding error from Enrique Hernandez.
Chicago starter Shota Imanaga (13-3) allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings. Edman hit two home runs and Yoshinobu Yamamoto had eight strikeouts in four innings during his return from a shoulder injury for the Dodgers.

Junior Caminero had three hits while Christopher Morel and Josh Lowe each registered two hits for the Rays, who lost for the fourth time in six games.
Tigers 11, Rockies 0
Rookie right-hander Keider Montero recorded a shutout, Parker Meadows homered and drove in three runs and host Detroit rolled past Colorado.

Bradley Blalock (1-3) was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits in four innings for the Rockies. Blalock walked five and fanned four.
Pirates 6, Marlins 4
Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run homer to help lift Pittsburgh past visiting Miami.
Bryan Reynolds had two hits, two runs and an RBI and Isiah Kiner-Falefa added two hits and a run for the Pirates, who have won the first two games of the three-game series. Reliever Joey Wentz (1-2) got the win, and Aroldis Chapman earned his eighth save.
Jhonny Pereda had three hits, an RBI and a run and Kyle Stowers had two doubles, an RBI and a run for the Marlins. Adam Oller (1-3) allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings.
Brewers 3, Giants 2
Garrett Mitchell homered, the Milwaukee bullpen provided 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief and the Brewers held on for a road victory over San Francisco.
Brewers starter Aaron Civale (6-8) allowed two runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. William Contreras collected three singles and Willy Adames had a pair for the Brewers.
Giants starter Landen Roupp (0-1) worked five innings and yielded two runs and five hits. Mike Yastrzemski homered for San Francisco.
Athletics 4, Astros 3 (12 innings)
Daz Cameron, Max Schuemann and Nick Allen parlayed successive bunts into a two-run rally in the top of the 12th inning, helping Oakland escape with a win over Houston.
The Athletics rallied against Astros reliever Hector Neris (9-5). Oakland left-hander JP Sears had his start bumped up one day after scheduled starter Osvaldo Bido was placed on the injured list due to right wrist flexor tendinitis. Sears worked six shutout innings.
Astros rookie right-hander Spencer Arrighetti allowed two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. Jose Altuve went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Orioles 5, Red Sox 3
Cedric Mullins hit two home runs as visiting Baltimore ended a three-game losing streak by beating Boston.
Mullins belted a solo shot in the first inning, then socked a two-run homer in the third. Adley Rutschman drove in two runs for Baltimore. Albert Suarez (8-5) pitched six innings and held Boston to one run on four hits.
Red Sox starter Kutter (8-14) gave up three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Boston has lost the past five times Crawford has taken the mound.
Braves 12, Nationals 0
Michael Harris II homered twice, Orlando Arcia and Sean Murphy also went deep and visiting Atlanta routed Washington.
Harris, Matt Olson and Ramon Laureano had three hits each for the Braves. Atlanta starter Reynaldo Lopez left the game after one inning due to right shoulder soreness. Jesse Chavez (2-2) threw three scoreless innings, and four Braves pitchers combined for a three-hitter.
Jose Tena had two doubles for the Nationals. Washington starter MacKenzie Gore (8-12) gave up seven runs, but only two earned, on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Guardians 5, White Sox 0
Lane Thomas had two hits, including a three-run homer, and seven Cleveland pitchers combined on a five-hitter for the visiting Guardians, who maintained a 3 1/2-game lead on Kansas City atop the American League Central.
Cleveland starter Ben Lively pitched just two innings, exiting the game after being struck on the outside of the right thigh by a comebacker. Pedro Avila (6-1) threw two innings and was credited with the win.
Andrew Vaughn had two hits for the White Sox, who have lost a franchise-worst 14 straight home games. Jonathan Cannon (3-10) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Reds 3, Cardinals 0
Rhett Lowder earned his first career big-league victory for visiting Cincinnati.
Lowder (1-1) held St. Louis to five hits in five innings. He struck out three and did not issue a walk. Four relievers pitched an inning each to complete the shutout.
TJ Friedl drove in two runs for the Reds, who won for the seventh time in nine games. St. Louis lost for the third time in four games as Andre Pallante surrendered three runs and walked five in five innings.
Royals 5, Yankees 0

Alyssa Thomas came within three points of her second triple-double in as many games and fourth of the year, finishing with seven points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. The Sun canned 53.2 percent of their shots from the floor and earned a 26-10 advantage in fastbreak points.

Los Angeles got off to a fast start, using a 7-0 run to establish an 18-10 lead at the 3:15 mark of the first quarter on Odyssey Sims’ layup. But Connecticut coach Stephanie White used a timeout and her team responded with six straight points to end the period.
In the second quarter, the Sun erupted for 27 points. They held the Sparks scoreless for more than a five-minute span that bridged the periods and built the advantage as high as 16 before settling for a 43-32 cushion at halftime.
Connecticut pushed the lead to as many as 19 points in the third, but Los Angeles edged within 53-43 on two foul shots by Li Yueru with 2:51 left in the quarter. However, Connecticut put it away with an 11-2 burst that DeWanna Bonner capped with two foul shots to make it 64-45 going to the fourth quarter.

Breanna Stewart poured in 27 points, 19 of them in the first half, as the visiting New York Liberty rolled to a 105-91 win over the Dallas Wings on Tuesday in the first of two games between the teams in three nights in Arlington, Texas.
The Liberty (30-6), who own the best record in the WNBA, won their fourth straight game and moved a step closer to clinching the top spot in the playoffs. New York remains three games in front of Minnesota in the standings with four regular-season games to play.
New York never trailed in the game and built a 17-point advantage in the second quarter on the way to a 15-point advantage at halftime. Dallas clawed to within eight points in the third quarter before the Liberty flexed their muscles and ran off a 13-0 spurt that all but cemented the contest.

LYNX STAY HOT BY KNOCKING OFF DREAM, 76-64
Kayla McBride scored a team-high 15 points while Napheesa Collier and Bridget Carleton chipped in 14 apiece, leading the visiting Minnesota Lynx to a 76-64 win over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday night.

Atlanta (12-24) was led by Allisha Gray’s 17 points, followed by Rhyne Howard’s 14. Tina Charles tallied 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Dream, who lost their second in a row.
After trailing by three at halftime, Atlanta scored the first four points of the second half, and a pair of Gray free throws gave the Dream their first lead since the 4:39 mark of the first quarter.
After Howard tied the game at 50 with a triple, Minnesota responded with a 10-2 run, stamped by Myisha Hines-Allen’s layup with 1:13 left in the third quarter. Howard stopped the bleeding with a mid-range jumper, but McBride’s 3-pointer on the next possession put Minnesota up 63-54 — a lead it held entering the fourth quarter.
From there, the Lynx’s lead ballooned to 68-56 on Collier’s 8-footer with 8:26 left. A pair of free throws from Gray cut Minnesota’s lead to 68-60 with 7:01 remaining, but Alanna Smith’s triple on the ensuing possession pushed the Lynx’s lead back to double digits. Carleton’s 3-pointer then extended Minnesota’s advantage to 74-60 at the 3:49 mark, icing the game for the Lynx.
In the first quarter, Atlanta’s early 6-4 lead was answered with an 11-3 Minnesota run that was capped by Smith’s layup at the 1:59 mark of the frame.
After trailing 22-14 a minute into the second quarter, the Dream cut their deficit to one, 22-21, with 7:53 left in the first half thanks to Maya Caldwell’s trey and back-to-back 2-pointers from Howard and Charles.
Gray’s buzzer-beating layup pulled Atlanta within 41-38 at the break. Carleton led all scorers with 11 points in the first half.

PURDUE WOMEN’S GOLF
FRESHMAN SAMANTHA BROWN’S UNDER-PAR ROUND LEADS BOILERS ON MOVING DAY IN MINNESOTA
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Playing just her fifth round of college golf, Samantha Brown made six birdies on her way to her first under-par round as a Boilermaker. The freshman fired a 1-under 71, besting her previous low round by four strokes, to lead Purdue Women’s Golf in the second round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
As a team, the Boilermakers shaved 14 strokes off their opening round to shoot 294 (+6) Tuesday. That was good enough for the sixth-best score of the day. After managing only seven birdies as a squad in the first round, Purdue made 15 birdies as a team throughout the second round. Through 36 holes, the Boilermakers ranked third in the field with 114 pars.
On moving day, Brown moved up 14 spots and into a tie for 39th at 5-over. She improved seven strokes from her first round, thanks in large part to her team-high six birdies. The Westfield, Indiana, native bounced back from a double bogey on the opening hole to play the final 17 holes 3-under par. Brown caught fire with a birdie on the par-4 15th. After a par on No. 16, she rattled off three straight birdies to get into red figures. The birdie at the first was followed by a double bogey at No. 2, but the freshman was resilient again and got through the final seven holes bogey free. She added birdies at No. 4 and then No. 9 to complete her under-par round and best performance as a Boilermaker.
Natasha Kiel carded an even-par 72 that featured four birdies, four bogeys and 10 pars. She bogeyed her first hole, the par-4 10th, before immediately getting the shot back with a birdie on No. 11. She made three more birdies to card a 33 (-3) on the opening nine. However, three bogeys over the final four holes prevented the senior from finishing the day under par.
Momo Sugiyama added a 75 (+3), recovering from a difficult start to play the final 16 holes even par. Jocelyn Bruch’s 76 (+4) contributed to the team’s score, as the senior ended her round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.
The Boilermakers wrap up play at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Wednesday morning. Purdue (+20) is paired alongside UCLA (+12) and Clemson (+14).

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL
AFTER ‘LOWEST OF LOWS,’ NO. 18 NOTRE DAME BIDS TO TURN BACK PURDUE
A week after suffering a humiliating home-field loss to Northern Illinois, No. 18 Notre Dame will look to regain its footing when it visits Purdue on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.
Notre Dame (1-1) tumbled 13 spots in the AP Top 25 poll after losing to the Huskies, who entered last weekend’s matchup as a four-touchdown underdog. The Fighting Irish dropped a 16-14 decision after kicker Mitch Jeter’s last-gasp, 62-yard field goal attempt was blocked as time expired.
Now the Fighting Irish turn their attention to Purdue (1-0), which cruised to a 49-0 win over Indiana State in its season opener.
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman will try to keep his players focused on the task ahead as they take on the Boilermakers. Just recently, Freeman was celebrating his team after a road win against Texas A&M.
“It’s disappointing,” Freeman said. “You go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in a tale of two weeks. But we’ve got to own this thing. As coaches and players, we’ve got to own it, and we’ve got to fix it.
“We’ve been here before, right? We’ve been here before. Now it’s time to get it fixed. We’ve got to get it fixed and get back to playing football the way we know how to play, (the way) we’ve played before. And we can, and we will.”
On the other side of the field, Purdue coach Ryan Walters also senses an opportunity with Saturday’s showdown. The Boilermakers had a bye last week, which gave them extra time to prepare for an in-state rival that long has landed top recruits and dominated headlines in the region.
Walters knows Purdue stands much to gain from an upset win.
“Yeah, I definitely think there is an element of proving it or earning respect,” Walters said. “You know, I would be lying to you if I didn’t say this game was circled on my calendar. So we’re excited.”
Purdue quarterback Hudson Card completed 24 of 25 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns in his season debut. Max Klare was the top target with five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, while Devin Mockobee led the ground game with 11 carries for 89 yards.
On defense, Purdue edge rusher Will Heldt tallied a pair of sacks.
The Notre Dame player in the brightest spotlight will be quarterback Riley Leonard, who has completed 38 of 62 passes for 321 yards and two interceptions this season. He also has rushed for 79 yards and a score.
Fighting Irish running back Jeremiyah Love could help to take some of the burden off Leonard and the rest of the offense. Love has scored in back-to-back games, and he has 25 carries for 170 yards to lead the team.
Howard Cross III leads Notre Dame with one sack, and Xavier Watts and Adon Shuler have one interception apiece.
Walters said he expected Notre Dame to be motivated at kickoff.
“We’re going to err on the side of thinking they’re going to be an angry football team,” he said. “Any time you’re top five in the country and lose the home opener, that’s going to leave a bad taste in your mouth. I know Coach Freeman will have those guys fired up and ready to play.”

#23/8 IRISH AND #22 DUQUESNE BATTLE TO 1-1 DRAW
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The No. 23/8 Fighting Irish men’s soccer team battled No. 22 Duquesne to a 1-1 draw at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday night, as both teams remained unbeaten on the season.
Notre Dame outshot the Dukes by a margin of 21-3 on the evening.
The Fighting Irish goal came from Nolan Spicer, scoring his first of the season off the feed from Bryce Boneau.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish were on the front foot all half, dominating possession and the run of play over the opening 45 minutes of play. However, neither side was able to find the breakthrough goal in the first half, as it was scoreless at the intermission.
Matthew Roou forced a diving save from the Dukes’ keeper in the 32nd minute and then had the ball in the back of the net right before the half but it was judged to have gone off an arm by VAR to keep the match at 0-0.
The Irish kept the pressure on the Duquesne backline coming out of the break. Roou nearly scored the opener in the 57th minute but his headed effort off a corner from KK Baffour was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper.
Eight minutes later the attacking onslaught paid off. Spicer and Boneau played a 1-2 on the edge of the area which resulted in Spicer burying his effort inside the far post to break the deadlock and put the Irish in front at 1-0 in the 65th minute.
Notre Dame nearly doubled its lead in the 77th minute. Baffour found space on the right side of the area and fired an effort on frame but the Duquesne goalie made a leaping save to keep it a one-goal advantage.
Completely against the run of play, Duquesne found the equalizer in the 86th minute, as the Dukes were awarded a penalty and Dakota Jonke converted from the spot to level the match at 1-1.
The Irish tried to find the winner in the final stages of play but time ran out before they could find the winner as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
McFARLAND FAMILY MEN’S HEAD SOCCER COACH CHAD RILEY’S TAKE
On the match…
“Disappointed with the draw but credit Duquesne, they were committed, defended really well and were organized. Then they seized on a moment at the end to earn the tie. I think there are a lot of things to be happy with about our performance. On another night we put a few more goals in.”
On the patience of the attack…
“Scoring the opening goal after creating many chances was one of the positives. We kept our composure even after having a goal called back in the first half. It can be very easy to be frantic in those moments but the guys stayed calm and continued to do the things we do all the time and were rewarded with a goal. Then their keeper made a couple of great saves to keep us at one.”
ND NOTES
All six goals from the Irish have come from six different players this season
Spicer’s goal is his first of the season and second of his career
Boneau’s assist is the 12th of his career and second of the season
Will Schroeder made the first start of his career on Tuesday evening
UP NEXT
The Irish continue their homestand at Alumni Stadium with a ranked showdown against No. 3 Stanford at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 14.

MUNCIE, Ind. – Traveling to face an AP Top 10 team for the ninth time in program history, the Ball State Cardinals venture to South Florida this week to face the No. 10-ranked Miami Hurricanes.
** The 100th season of Ball State football continues Saturday with a top-ten test against Miami, who moved up to No. 10 in the AP Top 25 poll following a 56-9 win last week over Florida A&M. It will be the ninth time Ball State will line up against a Top-10 opponent.
** Ball State enters the contest following a 42-34 win over Missouri State in which the Cardinals dominated time of possession and held a two-touchdown cushion through most of the fourth period. It reflected the most points by a Ball State team in its season opener since a 42-6 win in 2018 over Central Connecticut.
** The 100th anniversary of Ball State’s first season in 1924 coincides with the 100th season on the field, given that the Cardinals didn’t field a team in 1943 due to World War II. Season-long celebrations of the 100th season will be displayed at Scheumann Stadium this season.
** Redshirt freshman QB Kadin Semonza starred in last Saturday’s opener, completing four passes for touchdowns among 262 passing yards. He was 28-of-39 through the air, with just one interception. His 71.8% completion percentage was the best by a Ball State quarterback with more than 30 throws in a season opener since at least 2000. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another, accounting for five touchdowns overall – the most by a Ball State QB since Drew Plitt had five agianst Central Michigan in 2020.
** Ball State’s defense limited the Bears to just 62 net rushing yards, and just six first downs through three quarters (1 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd). Missouri State possessed the ball for just over six minutes by halftime and only 12 minutes through three periods. Linebackers Joey Stemler and Keionte Newson paced Cardinals tacklers with seven and six stops, respectively. Stemler added an interception and Newson had a pair of TFL.
WHAT A WIN MEANS:
** The Cardinals will begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 2013 when the Cardinals beat Illinois State and Army to start the year.
** Ball State will defeat an AP Top 10-ranked opponent for the first time in its history.
** The fifth winningest coach in Ball State football history, Mike Neu will capture his 39th victory as head coach of his alma mater to move within one victory of tying Dwight Wallace (40) with the fourth-most wins in Cardinals history.

100 – The 100th year of Ball State football coincides with the 100th anniversary of its first season in 1924. The all-time record: 477-456-32.
149 – Transfer RB Braedon Sloan made his Cardinals’ debut with 149 all-purpose yards (103 rushing, 46 receiving).

As a team, Ball State matched its opening round, shooting 10-over par and slipping from seventh to eighth place. Kash Bellar (75-74-76—225) was second on the Cardinals’ leaderboard, followed by Ali Khan (76-76-74—226). JUSTIN HICKS TIES FRESHMAN SCORING RECORD IN FIRST COLLEGIATE EVENT
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Justin Hicks of the Purdue Fort Wayne men’s golf team tied the Mastodon freshman 54-hole scoring record on Tuesday (Sept. 10) after turning in a 72-72-67-211 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
Hicks, a Fort Wayne native, shot a final round of 67 to vault up the leaderboard at Marshall’s event. He is just the third freshman in Mastodon history to shoot a 67 or better (Eric Brinker, 2017 and Nick Holder, 2023). His 67 also ties the fourth-best third round by any Mastodon. Hicks’ third round of the week featured five birdies and just one bogey. He birdied holes one, eight, 11, 14 and 18. He was bogey-free on the back nine for a 3-under 32.
Holder had an even round of 71 for his last of the week, which moved him up even more, a slight 22 spots, to a 39th-place finish. He finished with a 77-71-71-219, which put him in a tie with teammate Brock Reschly. Holder had a stretch of seven pars in a row on the front nine and a bogey-free back nine that included three pars. He birdied 11, 14 and 18. Reschly shot 72-74-73-219. The sophomore had six birdies in round three, coming on holes one, five, 11, 14, 17 and 18.
Freshman Julian Dugan tied with Holder and Reschly for 39th as well, as he turned in a two-day total of 72-75-72-219. Dugan was steady on the front nine, carding six pars and two birdies for a 1-under 35. He added seven pars on the back nine.
AJ Agnew shot 74-73-76-223 to tie for 67th. Agnew had a pair of birdies on four and eight and got seven pars to drop on the back nine.
One shot behind Agnew, Cody Coleman’s final round of his 78-74-72-224 was highlighted by an eagle on hole eight. He was one of four players in the 86-player field to eagle hole eight. He also had birdies on holes three, 10 and 18 to pave the way for his 1-over effort.
As a team, the Mastodons shot 290-290-283-863 for ninth place in the 13-team field. The Mastodons finished 17 shots ahead of Horizon League foe Youngstown State. Marshall won its own even with a three-round total of 824.

EVANSVILLE MEN’S SOCCER
OWUSU SCORES SECOND GOAL IN LOSS TO BUTLER
INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Evansville men’s soccer team suffered its second loss in a row in a 4-1 match against the Butler Bulldogs.
Graduate forward Sami Owusu (Denver, Colo. / Dayton) found the back of the net for the second time this season in the 69th minute, but it was too little too late to rally the Purple Aces on Tuesday night. UE got off to a quick start, putting up the first shot of the night. But it was Butler who struck first in the ninth minute on a solo shot from the left side of the 18 from freshman Jose Angel Luna.
Momentum shifted to the Bulldogs, but Evansville found its offense again in the 15th minute. The Aces took four shots in under two minutes, coming close but not quite finding the back of the net. The pace of play evened out between the two teams until Butler broke through for a second goal in the 35th minute. UE headed into the second half staring down a two-goal deficit, looking to break through on offense after leading in shots through the first 45 minutes.
Evansville came out of the half with a new energy, firing off four shots in the first seven minutes of the second half. But yet again the Bulldogs found a way to get to the back of the net in the 55th minute to make it a three-goal deficit for the Aces. UE wouldn’t let themselves be shut out of the match as Owusu scored in the 69th minute on a wide-arching right-footed shot off a defensive Butler play.
The goal gave Evansville some new life late in the game as forward Kai Phillip (Diego Martin, Trinidad, and Tobago) had a chance inside the attacking third two minutes later. While midfielder Jose Vivas (Teurel, Spain) had a shot ring off the post, coming just inches from his second goal in as many games. The Aces surging comeback was stymied by the Bulldogs in the final eight minutes as the Bulldogs added a fourth and final goal in the 85th minute.
Owusu was UE’s only player to register a point on the night while forward Nacho Diaz Barragan (Almeria, Spain) led the team with five shot attempts and three landing on goal. Evansville returns home to begin Missouri Valley Conference action on Saturday night. The Aces welcome a different Bulldog team to town in the Drake Bulldogs on Sept. 14th. Kick-off from Arad McCutchan Field is set for 7 p.m.

DELISANTI FINALIZES TOP-3 FINISH AT BRYAN NATIONAL COLLEGIATE
Senior Anthony Delisanti (Sanborn, N.Y. / Niagara Wheatfield) finished out a top-three finish on Tuesday at the Bryan National Collegiate, hosted by UNCG at the par-72, 7276-yard Bryan Park in Browns Summit, N.C. Delisanti concluded his steady performance during the third and final round of the 54-hole event.
How It Happened
Delisanti went two under for the third straight day, carding a 70 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 210 (-6). He tied for sixth in program history in 54-hole score in relation to par.
Delisanti finished one stroke away from Boston College’s Marcus Lam for individual runner-up honors and two away from UNCG’s Kelvin Hernandez for medalist honors. Delisanti had four birdies and two bogeys in the third and final round.
Two Beacons shot even par in Tuesday’s third round – sophomore Elliot Lee (Tillamook, Ore. / Tillamook) and redshirt senior Sam Schmidt (College Station, Texas / College Station [Southern Nazarene]). The Beacons moved up to seventh on the team leaderboard, finishing the event at 882 (+18). The team bounced back nicely from a rocky first round with solid play on Monday and Tuesday, including a 289 (+1) in the final round, the squad’s best score of the tournament.
Host UNGC won the team title at 854 (-10), edging Delaware by two strokes.
Thoughts from Head Coach Dave Gring
“This was the second consecutive round where our shot execution was much improved, versus Round 1. The team averaged hitting two-thirds of our greens in regulation and we were much more accurate off of the tee. Our club-face control was better today, so we didn’t have as many errant shots and big numbers. The guys seemed to settle into the rhythm of their rounds well in both Rounds 2 and 3. We seemed to be overly excited and even tentative in Round 1 to get the season started, but they made good adjustments in the last two rounds.”
“We still had a lot of struggles on the Bermuda greens with our reads and making birdie putts. It’s really challenging when you’re trying to build some momentum in a round, you hit a lot of good shots close to the pin on challenging holes and you can’t make the putt. We could never get comfortable on the greens, so we left a lot of shots out there during all three rounds. We didn’t have a lot of 3-putts and the speed of our putts was good. This will be an area that we will continue to monitor and improve as we’re getting the season started.”
“I was very pleased with the improvement in team score in each round. I was also pleased with our consistent scoring in our final round. We always want to finish tournaments strong, and the guys demonstrated that today. Anthony was very consistent for us in the tourney and his ball-striking was excellent. He left an awful lot out there on the greens. Sam Booth, Sam Schmidt and Adam also had a good tournament with their ball-striking. Rodrigo had two solid rounds to finish his first college tournament as a freshman. We have a few days of quality practice ahead of us, and then we will look forward to our next tournament at Colorado State next week.”

VALPO FOOTBALL TO OPEN HOME SEASON UNDER SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Indiana Wesleyan (2-0, 1-0 MSFA)
at Valparaiso (0-2, 0-0 PFL)
Game #3 Saturday, Sept. 14, 6:30 p.m. CT
Brown Field (5,000) – Valparaiso, Ind.
This Week in Valpo Football: The Valparaiso University football program will welcome in the home portion of the 2024 season with a rare night game at Brown Field as Indiana Wesleyan comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. The “Welcome Back Party” game will feature fireworks, a kids zone and food trucks as part of the fan experience.
Previously: Valpo outscored Youngstown State 25-21 in the second and third quarters combined, but the No. 25/23 Penguins held a 38-0 advantage in the first and fourth quarters to beat the Beacons 59-25 in Week 2 at Stambaugh Stadium in Youngstown, Ohio. QB Caron Tyler came off the bench to provide a spark, going 8-of-17 passing for 160 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 120 yards and two scores on 15 carries. One of his rushing TDs was an impressive leap over two defenders, acrobatically flipping into the end zone after taking off from the five-yard line. True freshman Gary Givens III had a big day with three receptions for 71 yards and a score.
Series Notes: This will be the fourth all-time matchup between Valpo and Indiana Wesleyan and the home team has won every game in this series with the Wildcats prevailing 28-10 in 2021 and 24-22 last season and the Beacons taking the 2022 matchup 20-17 at Brown Field. Last season, Tytus Ragle made a 14-yard touchdown grab from Michael Appel Jr. with seven seconds remaining that gave Valpo an opportunity to tie the game with a 2-point conversion. Appel completed the pass to Ryan Mann on the 2-point try, but Mann was tripped up just shy of the goal line. The last time Valpo hosted Indiana Wesleyan, Brian Barthlomew drilled a career-long 50-yard field goal in the final two minutes to account for the difference in the game in front of a large crowd at Brown Field.
Following the Beacons: Saturday’s game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Todd Ickow (play-by-play) and Tom Byrne (analyst). In addition, the radio broadcast featuring Jack Hutter and Eli Conklin on the call will be available on WVUR, 95.1 FM Valparaiso, ValpoAthletics.com and the TuneIn Radio app.
Head Coach Landon Fox: Landon Fox (17-37) is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Valparaiso University football program in 2024. Over the last four seasons, Fox has led Valpo to 14 Pioneer Football League victories, the most in a four-year period in program history. This stretch marks Valpo’s most league wins in a four-year period in any conference since 1961-1964. Fox finished the 2023 season with 17 victories as Valpo head coach, tied for the seventh most in program history. He coached his 2023 team to a 3-2 record at Brown Field, the group’s highest home win total since 2017. Fox’s teams continued to thrive academically in 2023 as well, led by PFL Scholar-Athlete of the Year Evan Annis, who became the first Beacon to earn that honor. He was part of a group of five Academic All-PFL selections, tied for the most in the league and the program’s most since 1998. During the 2022 campaign, Valpo had 64 PFL Honor Roll members, the most in program history. After spending the previous 11 seasons as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at the University of Dayton, Fox was named the head football coach at Valpo prior to the 2019 season. He helped the Flyers finish with 10 winning seasons in his 11 years on staff and guided a defensive backfield that produced one All-American, four Academic All-Americans, two PFL Special Teams Players of the Year and three corners who were invited to NFL Rookie Minicamp. Prior to joining Dayton’s staff, Fox served as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Wayne State University in Detroit from 2005-2007. He also spent time as a defensive graduate assistant at Ball State University (2004), Dayton (2002-2003) and Lakeland College (2001). Fox began his coaching career as an assistant varsity coach at Preble Shawnee High School in Camden, Ohio during the 2000 season. During his playing days, Fox was a team captain and all-conference performer at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio from 1995-1999 and graduated with a degree in physical education and health in May 2000 before earning his master’s degree in education from Lakeland in May 2002.
Acrobatics & Tumbling
Caron Tyler leaped over several Youngstown State defenders and sailed his way into the endzone to complete a seven-yard touchdown run on Sept. 7 at Youngstown State. The redshirt freshman quarterback took off from the five-yard line with the incredible leap.
The play was featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays, ranking No. 2 on the iconic ESPN countdown that evening.
Earlier in that edition of SportsCenter, Tyler’s leap was highlighted during the “two-minute drill” segment as the Most Acrobatic Play of the Day in college football.
Tyler also received praise from ESPN’s College Football Final, checking in at No. 4 on that show’s Plays of the Day.
The play was also highlighted on the NCAA FCS Football X account and was shared by Bleacher Report on TikTok.
Welcome Home
Valpo started the season with back-to-back road games for the eighth time in the last 16 years. For the seventh straight season in which Valpo has started with back-to-back road tilts, the Beacons enter the home opener at 0-2.
Valpo will look to start the home docket with a win for just the second time in the last eight years. Valpo is 1-6 in its last seven home openers with the lone win during that stretch coming 20-17 over Indiana Wesleyan in 2022.
Saturday Night Lights
Home night games have been a rarity for the Valpo football program. This will mark the second such game in the last decade, joining the 20-17 win over Indiana Wesleyan to open the 2022 season.
Prior to 2022, Valpo had not played a home night game since Sept. 6, 2014 vs. Saint Joseph’s College, the first home game of the Dave Cecchini Era, which preceded the Landon Fox regime.

Football History for September 11
September 11, 1983 – Franco Harris becomes the 3rd player in NFL history to rush for 11,000 career yards or more. Harris’s 118 yards in the Pittsburgh Steelers 25-21 victory at Green Bay Packers put him over the distinctive yardage mark.
Hall of Fame Birthdays for September 11
September 11, 1897 – Stan Keck was a former guard and tackle for Princeton University. Stan was selected as an All-American in 1920 and 1921 for his great line play. The College Football Hall of Fame enshrined him in 1959 after a National Football Foundation vote. After his playing days Keck ended up getting into coaching and he served as the head coach at Waynesburg University from 1947 through the 1950 season.
September 11, 1924 – Tom Landry the former Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys for 29 seasons. When one thinks of Coach Landry the image of a well-dressed, poised man in a fedora pacing the sidelines comes to mind. He had a demeanor unlike most coaches, he rarely showed emotion from the sideline, neither in anger nor in exuberating. Landry was from Mission, Texas and he attended the University of Texas where he played football for the Longhorns. Landry was a pretty talented player at that and well-rounded as he played, cornerback, punter, quarterback, and halfback. Most people don’t realize that he played professionally as well, being drafted 128th overall in the All-American Football Conference’s 1948 Draft by the New York Yankees. Tom played with the Yanks and then after the AAFC folded in 1949 he switched to the NFL to play with the New York Giants who had drafted him in the 1947 NFL Draft and held his league rights. Landry received his first glimpse of coaching as a Giant when Head Coach Steve Owen asked the young Landry to explain the 6-1-4 defense to his teammates. He stayed with the Giants for multiple seasons and was voted in as an All-Pro in 1954. In 1954 and 1955 with Steve Owen out as coach Landry served as a player/assistant coach under new headman Jim Lee Howell. Landry was the defensive coordinator while a man named Vince Lombardi was in charge of the Giants offense. Coach Landry ended his career after the 1955 season with 32 interceptions in a mere 80 games played. Early in 1960 before they even officially existed, Tom Landry was hired as the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. The first year coach had some tough sledding as his team went 0-11-1. The Cowboys owner, Clint Murchison Jr., had faith in Landry though as he promptly signed him to a 10 year extension. The patience paid off as the team improved and in 1966 the team won 10 games and earned the right to play Lombardi’s Packers in the NFL Championship game. His tenure as the Dallas head man lasted an amazing record of 29 years. He developed the 4-3 defense while in New York creating the position of middle linebacker, brought the use of the shot gun offense out of mothballs, innovated the flex defense and trained his running backs to run through any open space, not to a specific hole opened up by design. He taught his players to fully concentrate on their tasks and so as not to lose focus he trained them in almost mechanical shifts and player sets during the offensive cadence. He was to have said that since he and his players were so busy concentrating on doing their jobs that they had no time to be emotional. Landry coached teams in Dallas made the Super Bowl 5 times, winning two of them and he was a Bart Starr QB sneak in the Ice Bowl away from a sixth. 1990 Coach Landry was selected to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
September 11, 1978 – Ed Reed was a former Safety for the University of Miami Hurricanes. The prolific safety was drafted as the 24th overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, and Reed played his entire 12 year career there. Reed started all 16 games as a rookie, ended up being the 2004 Defensive Player of the Year and played in 6 Pro Bowls. Ed was a ball hawk as he had 64 interceptions in 167 games played scoring 7 touchdowns. Ed Reed was selected to enter both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
