JONES LEGEND KC JONES DIES

Boston Celtics icon K.C. Jones has died at the age of 88, the team confirmed Friday.

“Never one to seek credit, his glory was found in the most fundamental of basketball ideals – being part of a winning team. The Celtics family mourns his loss as we celebrate his remarkable career and life,” the team’s statement said.

The floor general won 12 NBA championships as both a player and coach, 11 of them with Boston. His eight NBA titles as a player are tied for the third-most all time, and he went a perfect 8-0 in the championship series during his career. Jones won it all as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972 and Boston in 1981, then guided the Larry Bird-led Celtics to titles in 1984 and 1986 as head coach.

The Hall of Famer also won two NCAA titles while attending the University of San Francisco and an Olympic gold medal in 1956. Jones starred alongside legendary center Bill Russell with both San Francisco and Boston.

The Celtics retired Jones’ No. 25 jersey in 1967. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989.

Jones had been receiving care for Alzheimer’s disease in an assisted living facility over the last few years.

DUKE WBB ENDS SEASON

The Duke women’s basketball team has ended its season amid the coronavirus pandemic, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The men’s team planned to keep playing.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because the school has not publicly announced the decision.

The Duke women’s basketball team has been on pause since Dec. 16 because of two positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing within the program’s travel party. The Blue Devils (3-1) postponed games against Miami, N.C. State and UNC Wilmington. The team’s next scheduled contest was against Louisville on Thursday.

The Blue Devils are the first Power Five school to have started this season and will not finish it because of the virus. The Ivy League opted out of playing winter sports in November before the basketball season started. A few other schools also decided not to play this year.

New coach Kara Lawson, who was hired in July, had said this month: “I don’t think we should be playing right now. That’s my opinion on it.” That came a day after Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski questioned why college basketball was being played in the midst of the pandemic.

PURDUE WINS ON CHRISTMAS DAY

Brandon Newman scored 17 points, Eric Hunter Jr. added 16 and Purdue held off Maryland 73-70 on Friday.

Hunter was credited with a basket after a goaltending call with 38.4 seconds left to give Purdue a 72-70 lead, and the teams combined to go 1 for 6 from the free-throw line the rest of the way. Hunter missed two at the stripe with 1.8 seconds left and Donta Scott did not hit the rim on a full-court heave at the buzzer.

Jaden Ivey had 11 points and Trevion Williams added 10 with eight rebounds for Purdue (7-3, 2-1 Big Ten). The Boilermakers won their 50th conference game at home since the 2014-15 season — ranking first in the Big Ten.

Four different Purdue players made a 3-pointer during a 14-2 run to take a 25-10 run. The Boilermakers made seven of their first ten shots from distance, and led 41-28 at halftime behind 10 points from Hunter. Purdue finished the game making 10 of 22 behind the 3-point arc — with three from Newman.

Scott had 15 points and eight rebounds for Maryland (5-3, 0-2), which never led. Aaron Wiggins added 14 points and Eric Ayala 13. The Terrapins only turned it over five times — a game after recording just four times against La Salle for the fewest in the Mark Turgeon era.

(GAME NOTES)

Purdue improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten with a 73-70 win over Maryland on Christmas Day at Mackey Arena.

The game was the first played for Purdue ever on Christmas Day.

Purdue improved to 6-4 all-time against Maryland, including 4-1 at Mackey Arena (4 straight wins). Eight of the 10 games have been decided by single-digits and five by five or fewer points.

The victory was Purdue’s fifth straight home win and improved Purdue to 50-9 at Mackey Arena against Big Ten foes since the start of the 2014-15 season.

Purdue went 10-of-22 from long range, improving to 37-5 since the start of the 2017-18 season when making 10 or more trifectas.

Purdue outrebounded Maryland 41-31.

Matt Painter improved to 169-104 in Big Ten play, needing just three more wins to tie Wisconsin legend Bo Ryan for ninth on the Big Ten’s all-time wins list.

Purdue’s freshmen class scored 39 points, accounting for 53.4 percent of Purdue’s scoring. It marked the fourth time this year the group accounted for at least 50.0 percent of Purdue’s scoring (Liberty, Clemson, Miami, Maryland).

Brandon Newman scored 17 points with two rebounds and an assist, making 3-of-6 from deep. It marked the fourth straight game he has made at least two triples.

Jaden Ivey scored 11 points with five rebounds and four assists, both career highs. He scored seven straight points during a key second-half Purdue run.

Eric Hunter Jr., tallied 16 points, the third time this year that he scored at least 15 points.

TRICE LEADS WISCONSIN OVER MICHIGAN STATE

D’Mitrk Trice scored a season-high 29 points, lifting No. 9 Wisconsin to a 85-76 win over No. 12 Michigan State on Friday.

The Badgers (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten) won at the Breslin Center for the first time since 2004 and extended their Big Ten winning streak to 10 games, dating to last season when they shared the conference championship with the Spartans and Maryland.

Michigan State (6-2, 0-2) trailed by two points before Wisconsin scored 14 of the last 21 points over the final 4:03 to turn a closely contested game into a lopsided result.

Joey Hauser scored a career-high 27 points, but he didn’t get much help from his teammates offensively. Aaron Henry was the only other Spartan to score in double figures, but he was 5 of 13 from the field for 12 points.

The Badgers, meanwhile, had balance with four double-digit scorers, and they were much more active defensively as a team.

Wisconsin’s Aleem Ford scored 13 points while Brad Davison and Micah Potter each had 11.

MINNESOTA DOWNS #4 IOWA IN OT

Brandon Johnson joined Minnesota as a graduate transfer in this pandemic-altered season, the adjustment to Big Ten play made even more challenging by a recent ankle injury.

He sure found his comfort zone against Iowa.

Johnson went 8 for 9 from 3-point range — making all four of his attempts in overtime — and finished with 26 points and nine rebounds to lead Minnesota’s late surge for a 102-95 upset victory over No. 4 Iowa on Friday night.

After matching the single-game school record for 3-pointers made — more than he hit in each of his first two college seasons at Western Michigan — Johnson was mobbed by his teammates on the court in the otherwise-empty arena.

“I’m going to remember that for the rest of my life,” said Johnson, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward who was 2 for 10 from 3-point range entering the game.

Marcus Carr had 30 points on 6-for-13 shooting from 3-point range and eight assists, and Liam Robbins added 18 points and four blocks for the Gophers (8-1, 1-1 Big Ten). They trailed by seven points with 44 seconds left in regulation and outscored the Hawkeyes 29-15 the rest of the way.

Luka Garza had 32 points and 17 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (7-2, 1-1), who allowed 99 points in their first loss last week to No. 1 Gonzaga. They were especially hard on themselves after this effort, allowing the Gophers to fall one made 3-pointer short of the single-game program record (18).

“Johnson was open. There was no excuse for that,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey said.

WAGNER RETURNS AS MICHIGAN UPENDS NEBRASKA

Franz Wagner had 20 points and No. 19 Michigan scored 10 straight points early in the second half to pull away from Nebraska in an 80-69 victory Friday.

Michigan (7-0, 2-0 Big Ten) started slow in its first game since Dec. 13 but stunned Nebraska (4-5, 0-2) with the two-minute flurry that began with Isaiah Livers’ 3-pointer. Wagner close it with a 25-footer that put the Wolverines up 53-41 with 14:38 remaining.

Nebraska put together an 11-2 run, highlighted by a steal and breakaway dunk by Trey McGowens, and cut the Michigan lead to 64-60 on McGowens’ free throws with 6:20 left.

The Wolverines countered with a 7-2 spurt, going up 71-62 on Eli Brooks’ fast-break layup with 4:45 remaining. Nebraska didn’t get closer than six the rest of the way.

Playing after a long delay due to coronavirus concerns, Michigan struggled to get on track from long distance in the first half, hitting just 4 of 17 3-point attempts. Nebraska led for much of the half behind 21 points from Teddy Allen, who finished with a career high 25.

Livers had 17 points for the Wolverines. Hunter Dickinson had 13 points and 15 rebounds, Chaundee Brown, Jr. had 13 points and Mike Smith had 10 points

Dalano Banton had 17 points for Nebraska and McGowens had 15 points.

BROOKLYN STOPS BOSTON 123-95

The Brooklyn Nets scored a decisive victory in the early battle for Atlantic Division supremacy, beating the Boston Celtics 123-95 on their home court Friday.

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were sensational, combining for 66 points on 56.8% shooting to improve first-year coach Steve Nash’s Nets squad to 2-0 this season.

Brooklyn shot 53.9% from the floor and a scorching 15-of-29 (51.7%) from beyond the arc.

Jaylen Brown paced the Celtics in defeat, recording 27 points with eight rebounds. Jayson Tatum added 20 points and eight rebounds of his own, though he and Brown shot just 20-of-47 (42.6%) from the field, including 2-of-10 on 3-pointers.

In an on-court interview after the final buzzer, Irving – whose 37 points broke the Nets’ Christmas Day record of 36 set by Michael Ray Richardson in 1984 – said his team isn’t going to rest on the laurels of its early-season success.

“No, we can’t exceed our own expectations,” he told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. “We know this is a long journey ahead, and this is just another sparring session for us.

“Grateful to be able to come here, especially during the holidays. I don’t necessarily celebrate Christmas, but I wish happy holidays to everybody at home. I’m glad that we could put on a performance for everybody.”

SAINTS SCORE BIG IN WIN OVER MINNESOTA

Alvin Kamara tied an NFL record by running for six touchdowns in a game and finished with a career-high 155 yards rushing to help New Orleans beat the Minnesota Vikings 52-33 on Friday and clinch a fourth straight NFC South title.

Wearing different colored shoes — one red and one green on Christmas Day — Kamara sprinted for a 40-yard touchdown on the game’s opening drive. He added scoring runs of 1, 5, 6, 7 and 3 yards against a Minnesota defensive front hit hard by injuries.

Kamara equaled a record set by Hall of Fame fullback Ernie Nevers in 1929 for the Chicago Cardinals.

“The offensive line gets the game ball for sure, kudos to them,” Kamara said. “Sean (Payton, the Saints coach) dialed it up, I did the small part.

“Today was a great day, we got out first goal, division title. Gonna take it from there.”

Minnesota (6-9) was eliminated from playoff contention while allowing the most points by any Vikings team since 1963.

The Saints (11-4) never punted, and set a record of yards gained in a game by a Vikings opponent with 583. They might have won by a greater margin if not for a pair interceptions of Drew Brees, one of them on a pass that deflected off receiver Emmanuel Sanders’ hands.

Brees completed 19 of 26 throws for 311 yards in his second game back from rib and lung injuries that had sidelined him for four games.

NEW ORLEANS LB ALEXANDER OUT FOR REMAINDER OF SEASON

New Orleans Saints linebacker Kwon Alexander will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his Achilles during Friday’s game versus the Minnesota Vikings, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Alexander was carted off the field after suffering the injury in the third quarter.

New Orleans acquired Alexander in a midseason trade with the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for linebacker Kiko Alonso and a conditional fifth-round pick.

In six games with the Saints prior to Christmas, Alexander posted 24 tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and four pass breakups. He started all six of those contests next to Demario Davis.

GIANTS’ LOGAN RYAN GETS EXTENSION

The New York Giants locked up a big piece of their defense Friday, handing defensive back Logan Ryan a three-year extension.

Ryan’s deal is worth $31 million, with $20 million in guaranteed money, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The 29-year-old Rutgers product joined the Giants in September on a one-year deal and quickly established himself as a leader. In 14 games, Ryan’s totaled 79 tackles, nine pass defenses, and three forced fumbles, along with one sack and one interception.

Before joining New York, Ryan spent three seasons with the Tennessee Titans, helping them reach last year’s AFC Championship Game. He also won a pair of Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.

JONES TO MISS SUNDAY GAME

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones will miss his third consecutive game Sunday versus the Kansas City Chiefs due to a hamstring injury, the team announced Friday.

Overall, Week 16 will mark the sixth contest of the season that Jones has missed. He’s been battling a bad hamstring since before the season and first aggravated it in Week 2’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

In nine appearances this year, Jones has 51 catches for 771 yards and three touchdowns. Despite being in and out of the lineup, he ranks second on the team in receiving, trailing only Calvin Ridley.

With the Falcons nowhere near the playoff race, it seems unlikely that Atlanta will push Jones to return for the Jan. 3 season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team considered shutting him down earlier in December, though it never officially declared Jones out for the remainder of the season.

Jones, who will turn 32 in February, is guaranteed $15.3 million in base salary next season and will carry a cap hit of $23.05 million.

SMITH BACK AT PRACTICE FOR WASHINGTON

Alex Smith increased his practice workload Friday to full participation, but he’s unlikely to have top receiver Terry McLaurin versus the Carolina Panthers if he returns for Week 16.

The Washington Football Team quarterback was listed as questionable on the final injury report after completing his first full practice of the week. Smith is nursing a calf injury that forced him to miss a Week 15 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

McLaurin was labeled doubtful after missing three practices with an ankle injury. The NFL’s 10th-leading receiver has 1,078 yards and three touchdowns through the air over 14 contests in 2020.

Smith was reportedly facing an uphill battle to get back into the lineup by Sunday. Washington gave first-team reps Wednesday and Thursday to Dwayne Haskins and installed a game plan tailored to the sophomore’s strengths.

Washington is 4-1 in games started by Smith, and 2-7 in games started by Haskins or Kyle Allen. The club sits one game ahead of the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys for first place in the NFC East.

Elsewhere on offense, Washington called running back Antonio Gibson questionable. The standout rookie logged three limited practices after missing the last two games with a toe injury.

BYU QB WILSON HAS CHARACTER QUESTIONS

BYU quarterback Zach Wilson has had a breakout season this year and is in the running for the Heisman Trophy. Wilson is also expected to be picked highly in next year’s NFL Draft. Despite all of his success, not everything is smooth sailing for him.

Wilson is already facing the tricky “character concerns” label as a draft prospect.

Walter Football published an article on Wednesday saying that some teams have character concerns about Wilson.

A scouting director for an NFL team told Walter Football that Wilson “has character concerns, rich kid who is an entitled brat – uncle owns Jet Blue -, parents are a pain, not a leader, selfish, and he’s a know-it-all.”

However, the same director described Wilson as fun to watch and shared some positive traits about the quarterback.

Unfortunately, Wilson has also received a somewhat unflattering quarterback comparison.

There is a belief that Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will be the first QB taken in the NFL Draft. Ohio State’s Justin Fields is in contention to go second, but Wilson could be in that discussion as well.

As a junior this season, Wilson has completed 73.4 percent of his passes for 3,699 yards, 33 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He’s also rushed for 10 scores. Despite the concern one team has for him, some other teams could like him enough to make him a very high selection in the draft.

TEXAS TO SIGN JAPANESE STAR PITCHER

The Texas Rangers reached an agreement with Japanese pitcher Kohei Arihara, sources told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Arihara will sign a two-year contract worth between $6 million-$7 million, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The 28-year-old’s 30-day posting window was set to close Saturday.

Arihara played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Nippon Pro Baseball over the past six years. He recorded a 3.46 ERA across 132 2/3 innings last season while racking up 106 strikeouts and 30 walks.

The right-hander earned the Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award in 2015. He turned in the best season of his career in 2019 when he was named a finalist for the Eiji Sawamura Award – Japan’s equivalent of the Cy Young – after winning 15 games and recording a 2.46 ERA and 0.92 WHIP.

Arihara is set to join a rotation in Texas that includes Kyle Gibson, Jordan Lyles, and Dane Dunning.

Once Arihara signs with the Rangers, the club will have to pay a posting fee to the Fighters.
