2023 OUTLOOK:
2022 was going according to plan. Ranked #1 through week 8 of the season and a huge match-up against Hamilton SE. One more win and an undefeated regular season heading into the playoffs. HSE beat the Bulldogs 31-28 to end that undefeated regular season. But, never fear, Brownsburg swept sectional competition and met Cathedral in the regional. The defense played well, but the offense struggled as Brownsburg saw the season end with a 14-7 loss. 10 points separated the Bulldogs from a possible unbeaten record and a trip to the semi-state.
Now we move on to 2023. Coach Hart is losing some key players from last year including QB Jayden Whitaker, OL Leighton Jones (Iowa), OL Preston Jarvis and WR Freddie Hawthorne. Finding a QB will be a priority for Coach Hart and protecting the new QB will be another challenge. There are some key components returning including RB’s Garrett Sherrell (1,086 yards, 17 TDs; 18 catches, 242 yards, two TDs) and Ariyan Ballance (436 yards, six TDs; 15 catches, 162 yards), WR’s Corey Smith (40 catches, 811 yards, six TDs), Cayden Olinger (27 catches, 294 yards, three TDs), Cameron Edwards (nine catches, 83 yards) and OL Josh Thoman. Smith is headed to Minnesota and Thoman will play at Western Michigan.
The defense will county on DB Griffin Simpson (48 tackles, one interception), Defensive linemen Mason Keifer (43 tackles, 5 ½ tackles for loss) and Jackson Sarjent (37 tackles, 5 ½ tackles for loss) and LB Best Dare.
No opener with Ben Davis this season will help early, but the true test will be a match-up with Cathedral in week two.
