Trevor Etienne rushed for three touchdowns as No. 5 Georgia built a 23-point lead en route to a 30-15 win at No. 1 Texas in Austin in Southeastern Conference play Saturday.
Carson Beck completed 23 of 41 attempts for 175 yards and threw three interceptions for the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1 SEC), who won their third straight.
Georgia’s defense was dominant throughout, recording seven sacks and limiting Texas to just 29 rushing yards on 27 carries. Jalon Walker was the star, recording a game-high three sacks and a team-high eight tackles for the Bulldogs.
Quinn Ewers completed 25 of 43 passes for 211 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for Texas (6-1, 2-1). Arch Manning entered briefly in the second quarter, completing 3 of 6 passes for 19 yards.

Cam Ward passed for 319 yards and four touchdowns as the visiting Hurricanes beat the Cardinals in an ACC game.
Miami (7-0, 3-0) entered the game as the highest-scoring team in the nation at 47.7 points per game, and the Hurricanes continued to roll to their first 7-0 start since 2017.
Tyler Shough passed for 342 yards and four TDs for Louisville (4-3, 2-2), which also got a 100-yard kickoff return from Caullin Lacy.

Nico Iamaleava threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chris Brazzell II with 5:52 remaining to help the Volunteers beat the Crimson Tide in a Southeastern Conference showdown in Knoxville, Tenn.
Dylan Sampson rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries as Tennessee (6-1, 3-1) defeated Alabama for the second time in their past three meetings after dropping the previous 15 matchups.
Jalen Milroe completed 25 of 45 passes for 239 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for Alabama (5-2, 2-2). Milroe had his pass intercepted by Brooks with 1:24 left to end the Crimson Tide’s final chance to score.

Caden Durham ran for three touchdowns and the Tigers limited the Razorbacks to 38 yards on the ground in a Southeastern Conference win in Fayetteville, Ark.
Durham rushed for 101 yards on 21 carries as the Tigers (6-1, 3-0) earned their sixth straight win. Garrett Nussmeier was an efficient 22-of-33 through the air for 224 yards, throwing completions to nine different receivers.
Meanwhile, the Razorbacks (4-3, 2-2) couldn’t replicate the success they had in their 19-14 upset of then-unbeaten Tennessee in their last game two weeks ago. Taylen Green connected on 19 of 28 attempts for 239 yards with a touchdown and an interception but absorbed three sacks.
No. 9 Iowa State 38, UCF 35
Rocco Becht led the Cyclones, who trailed by 14 points in the third quarter, on a game-winning drive in the final two minutes to a Big 12 home win against the Knights.
Becht led the Cyclones (7-0, 4-0) on an 11-play, 80-yard drive where he either threw or ran it himself on every play. It ended with Becht going straight at the goal line for a 1-yard rushing touchdown and a follow-up two-point quarterback draw to grab the lead with 30 seconds left. Becht ended the night with 371 total yards, (274 passing, 97 rushing) and three total touchdowns.
For UCF (3-4, 1-3), RJ Harvey had 196 rushing yards and two touchdowns, which included an 80-yard run that put him over 3,000 yards in his NCAA career. Jacurri Brown, starting in his first game at quarterback for UCF, added 154 rushing yards with two rushing scores but threw a costly late interception.

Cade Klubnik fired three touchdown passes and the host Tigers spoiled Cavaliers’ coach Tony Elliott’s return to campus.
Clemson (6-1, 5-0 ACC) extended its winning streak to six games and posted its sixth straight win in the series with Virginia (4-3, 2-2). Elliott played at Clemson and worked on Tigers coach Dabo Swinney’s staff for 11 seasons, serving as the offensive coordinator for two national champions. This was his first game at Clemson, S.C., since taking over at Virginia in 2022.
Klubnik completed 23 of 35 passes for 308 yards with an interception. Phil Mafah rushed for 78 yards and two scores and Olsen Patt-Henry had two TD catches as Clemson outgained Virginia 539-346.
No. 14 Texas A&M 34, Mississippi State 24
Le’Veon Moss ran for two of his team’s three touchdowns as the Aggies defeated the host Bulldogs in Southeastern Conference action from Starkville, Miss.
Moss finished with 65 yards on 17 carries, while Amari Daniels chipped in 47 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts. Conner Weigman went 15-of-25 for 217 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for Texas A&M (6-1, 4-0 SEC).
While the Aggies have won six straight games since dropping their season opener, the Bulldogs (1-6, 0-4) have lost six in a row since winning their Week 1 contest. Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren was 22 of 41 for 242 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

Justice Ellison ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns as the Hoosiers rolled past the Cornhuskers in Bloomington, Ind.
Indiana (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) rolled up 495 yards of offense against a top-15 defense nationally despite losing starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke to a hand injury. Before departing at halftime, Rourke completed 17 of 21 passes for 189 yards with a touchdown.
While the Hoosiers were sharp in every phase, the Cornhuskers (5-2, 2-2) weren’t. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola completed 28 of 44 passes for 234 yards but also tossed three interceptions, two of which turned into Indiana touchdown drives.
No. 19 Missouri 21, Auburn 17
Brady Cook shook off an ankle injury and passed for 194 yards as Missouri rallied for a homecoming victory over Auburn in Columbia, Mo.
After getting hurt early in the first quarter and sitting out until late in the third quarter, Cook helped Missouri (6-1, 2-1 SEC) erase a 14-point deficit.
Payton Thorne was 17 of 29 for 176 yards and a touchdown for Auburn (2-5, 0-4).

Kevin Jennings threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns, including an 87-yarder to Moochie Dixon on the first offensive play of the game, and the Mustangs remained unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play with a shellacking of the host Cardinal.
LJ Johnson Jr. added two rushing scores for the Mustangs (6-1, 3-0), who have won four in a row since a narrow loss to BYU. They have run up 182 points in the process. Jennings had 278 of his 322 passing yards by halftime as part of the Mustangs’ 364-92 dominance in total yards in the first two periods.
Heralded freshman Elijah Brown came off the bench and threw for 153 yards in his first extensive playing time for the Cardinal (2-5, 1-3), who lost their fourth in a row.

Luke Altmyer threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Fighting Illini defeated the Wolverines in Champaign, Ill.
Altmyer completed 9 of 18 passes for 80 yards and rushed for 48 yards on 10 attempts. Aidan Laughery rushed for 54 yards on nine carries, and Illinois’ defense forced three turnovers and sacked Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle five times. Illinois (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) had dropped its last six meetings vs. the Wolverines, with its last victory coming in 2009.
Tuttle completed 20 of 32 passes for 208 yards and Colston Loveland caught seven passes for 83 yards. Kalel Mullings rushed 19 times for 87 yards and one score for the Wolverines (4-3, 2-2).

Bryson Daily matched a school record with five rushing touchdowns to lift the Black Knights over the Pirates in West Point, N.Y.
Daily ran for a career-high 171 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 17, 31, 1, 3 and 4 yards. The two-time reigning American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week has rushed for a school-record 19 touchdowns this season for Army (7-0, 6-0 AAC).
Chase Sowell had seven catches for 138 yards and joined Winston Wright Jr. and Anthony Smith in reeling in a touchdown reception for East Carolina (3-4, 1-2), which has lost four of its past five games.

Alex Tecza notched three first-quarter touchdowns, Dashaun Peele returned two interceptions for scores and the Midshipmen walloped the turnover-prone 49ers in American Athletic Conference action in Annapolis, Md.
A fullback, Tecza rushed for two scores and added a 46-yard TD reception as 16-point favorite Navy (6-0, 4-0 AAC) scored 24 points inside the game’s first dozen minutes. Blake Horvath went 7 of 13 for 117 yards and three TDs. The Midshipmen opened their season with six straight wins for the first time since 1979.
In losing for the first time in three games, Charlotte (3-4, 2-1) struggled as starting quarterback Max Brown completed 7 of 18 passes for 152 yards with two TDs and three interceptions.

It marked the second Super Bowl ever to go to overtime as Kansas City became the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the 2003-04 New England Patriots. Kansas City recorded the seventh comeback of 10-or-more points in a Super Bowl, including the team’s Super Bowl LIV and LVII victories.

The Ravens became the second team in the Super Bowl era to record at least 150 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown in each of its first six games of a season, joining the 1971 Oakland Raiders.
- Ravens running back Derrick Henry leads all active players with 98 rushing touchdowns in 125 career games and with two rushing touchdowns last week, surpassed Adrian Peterson (97 rushing touchdowns) for the fifth-most by a player in his first 125 games in NFL history. Henry has 25 career games with at least two rushing touchdowns, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (25 games), Shaun Alexander (25) and Priest Holmes (25) for the fifth-most games ever with at least two rushing touchdowns.

JUAN SOTO’S 10TH-INNING BLAST SENDS YANKEES TO WORLD SERIES
CLEVELAND — Juan Soto hit a three-run home run with two outs in the 10th inning and the visiting New York Yankees advanced to their first World Series since 2009 with a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday.
Giancarlo Stanton hit a game-tying two-run home run in the sixth inning for the Yankees, who won Game 5 of the American League Championship Series after trailing through the first five innings and never taking the lead until Soto’s heroics. Soto had three hits while teammate Gleyber Torres had two.
In the 10th, Soto hit four consecutive foul balls against Guardians right-hander Hunter Gaddis (1-1) before smashing a 1-2 fastball over the wall in right-center field. It was his second home run in two games and third of the series.
Stanton hit home runs in three consecutive games and had four in the series. Four New York relievers held Cleveland scoreless over the final 5 1/3 innings with Luke Weaver (1-0) pitching the last two innings to earn the win.
Bo Naylor doubled home brother Josh Naylor to give the Guardians a lead in the second inning, and Steven Kwan added an RBI single in the fifth. Cleveland right-hander Tanner Bibee held New York scoreless until Stanton hit his two-run homer with two outs in the sixth.
Torres led off the game with a single but was thrown out at home trying to score from first on a Soto double.
Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Josh Naylor singled with one out and scored on Bo Naylor’s two-out double that came on the 10th pitch of the at-bat against Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon.
It was the first time a brother drove in a brother in a postseason game since the 2001 AL Division Series when the Oakland Athletics’ Jeremy Giambi brought home Jason Giambi.
The Guardians got to Rodon again in the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead when Kwan’s two-out single knocked in Andres Gimenez, who had doubled.
The Yankees opened the sixth with singles from Torres and Soto before Aaron Judge grounded into a double play. Stanton followed by working the count full before crushing a game-tying home run to left center with a 117.5 mph exit velocity.
After Weaver pitched a perfect ninth inning, he worked around Kyle Manzardo’s one-out single in the 10th, getting Jose Ramirez to line out to center and getting Lane Thomas to fly out to Soto in right field to end the game.

NHL ROUNDUP: KRAKEN WIN IN OT, HAND FLAMES 1ST LOSS
Jordan Eberle scored 48 seconds into overtime as the Seattle Kraken defeated the visiting Calgary Flames 2-1 on Saturday.
Chandler Stephenson also scored for Seattle and Joey Daccord made 21 saves. The Kraken won their third game in a row and defeated Calgary for the first time at Climate Pledge Arena after six consecutive defeats over the past three-plus seasons since Seattle joined the NHL as an expansion franchise.
Blake Coleman scored for Calgary, which had its season-opening four-game winning streak come to an end. Dan Vladar stopped 21 of 23 shots.
The Kraken controlled the opening faceoff in overtime and kept the puck until Brandon Montour had it taken away behind the Calgary net. However, Montour immediately stole a pass deep in the Flames’ end and attempted a shot that was blocked. Montour corralled the rebound and fed Eberle for a one-timer from the slot for the winner.

Michael Kesselring buried a snap shot from the top of the right circle at 2:46 of overtime as Utah came from behind to beat Boston in Salt Lake City.
Kesselring, who played collegiately at Northeastern University in Boston, took a cross-ice feed from Logan Cooley and beat Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman under the crossbar for the winning tally. Vladislav Kolyachonok also scored and Connor Ingram made 22 saves for Utah.
Cole Koepke scored the lone goal for the Bruins, his career-high third and sixth point in six games. Swayman made 30 stops in the loss. Utah had a 32-23 advantage in shots.

Drake Batherson scored twice and added an assist as Ottawa edged visiting Tampa Bay.
Josh Norris, Brady Tkachuk and Noah Gregor also scored for the Senators, who won for the second time in three outings. Jake Sanderson added three assists and Claude Giroux had a pair of assists. Goaltender Anton Forsberg made 25 saves.

Matt Duchene scored two goals and Jake Oettinger made 30 saves in his first game since signing an eight-year, $66 million contract extension, lifting host Dallas over Edmonton.
The Stars’ Roope Hintz collected a goal and two assists and Jason Robertson had one of each. Logan Stankoven set up a pair of tallies for the Stars, who exacted a measure of revenge after falling in six games to the Oilers in last season’s Western Conference finals. Dallas has opened the season with four home wins for the seventh time in franchise history.
Stuart Skinner turned aside 20 shots for the Oilers, who saw their modest two-game winning streak come to a halt.

Noah Dobson scored in the ninth round of the shootout for New York, which squandered two leads before outlasting Montreal in Elmont, N.Y.
Neither team scored in the first three rounds of the shootout before both swapped goals in the next two rounds. Goalies Semyon Varlamov and Cayden Primeau traded saves for three rounds, after which Dobson sent a shot under Primeau’s glove. Varlamov then turned back Logan Mailloux to seal the win.
Bo Horvat, Kyle Palmieri and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders. Varlamov finished with 21 saves. Cole Caufield scored twice, including the tying goal late in the third, and Mailloux had his first NHL goal for the Canadiens. Primeau recorded 33 saves.

Chris Kreider scored two goals — one into an empty net — and visiting New York defeated Toronto.

Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves for his fourth career shutout as Vancouver spoiled Philadelphia’s home opener.
Nils Hoglander, Brock Boeser and Kiefer Sherwood scored for Vancouver, which improved to 2-1-0 on its four-game road trip. The Canucks will complete their trek Tuesday in Chicago before heading back to Western Canada.
Samuel Ersson made 29 saves for the Flyers, who had been 4-0-1 in their previous five home openers and had not been shut out in their first home game since 1999. Philadelphia defeated Vancouver on the road in its season opener — a 3-2 overtime triumph on Oct. 11 — but was unable to complete a sweep of the season series.

Kirill Kaprizov collected one goal and one assist as visiting Minnesota beat Columbus.

JJ Peterka scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period to help visiting Buffalo beat Chicago.
Peterka scored for a third straight game to put the Sabres ahead 3-2. He took a cross-ice pass from Tage Thompson low in the left circle for a quick strike at 18:37. Thompson and Peterka each had a goal and an assist while Beck Malenstyn also scored for the Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 35 saves to earn his first win of the season, Buffalo’s second.
Craig Smith scored twice and Lukas Reichel had two assists for the Blackhawks, who took their second loss in three games. Arvid Soderblom made 18 saves.

KEN DUKE HEATS UP, GRABS 1-SHOT LEAD AT DOMINION ENERGY CHARITY CLASSIC
Ken Duke followed a torrid front nine with a relatively uneventful last nine holes to take a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Dominion Energy Charity Classic on Saturday in Richmond, Va.
Duke carded a 6-under-par 66 at the Country Club of Virginia to move to 9-under 135, one shot better than Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez, who fired a 5-under 67.
South African Retief Goosen, who led after the first round with a 66, posted a 71 and is tied for third at 7 under with Steve Flesch (70 on Saturday).
The tournament is the first leg of the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. The top two players in the points race, South African Ernie Els and Australian Steven Alker, are well back. Els is tied for 30th at 1 under after a 72, and Alker (75 on Saturday) is tied for 48th at 2 over.
Only the top 54 players after this event qualify for next week’s tournament.
Duke, who began the week at No. 29 in the standings, went 5-under 31 on the first nine holes. He made birdies at Nos. 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 with his lone bogey at the par-4 No. 7, where his second shot found the greenside bunker on the 434-yard hole and he needed three shots from there.
Six consecutive pars followed on the back nine until a birdie at the par-5 No. 16.
“You’ve got to drive it in the fairway and I do that, but I have to birdie the par 5s. Have to,” said Duke, who birdied the par-5 Nos. 6, 9 and 16. “These guys hit it too long for me. I think I got three of ‘em today and three yesterday and that’s a bonus.
“Just par some of the tough ones,” he continued. “You’ve got to play the par 3s; they’re very difficult as well. So I missed a short one on 17. Besides that, I played really solid the whole day.”
Duke has, through 36 holes, hit 23 of 28 fairways and 27 of 36 greens in regulation.
His lone PGA Tour Champions victory in 133 starts entering this week is the 2023 Rogers Charity Classic. He is 0-for-2 when leading or sharing a 36-hole lead after 36 holes and winning a Champions event.
Duke said a victory on Sunday would show, with all the hard work put in, that he can win more than once, and that would mean something.
“Sometimes you win just one time, it’s a fluke,” Duke said. “But we’re consistent players and we just want to show that we can play out here as much as we can and just enjoy the ride more than anything. I enjoy it. I’m not going to be out here forever, but to get another win would be really nice.”
Gonzalez birdied Nos. 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 15 and 16 to overcome a double bogey on the par-4 No. 11.
J.T. POSTON, DOUG GHIM IN FRONT AT DELAYED SHRINER’S EVENT
Doug Ghim and J.T. Poston shared the lead at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas when play was halted due to darkness Saturday evening.
The third round will conclude Sunday morning ahead of the fourth round.
Ghim made a big move on Saturday, birdieing his final four holes at TPC Summerlin while going 7 under par through 16 holes. That left him at 15 under par overall. Poston is 2 under through 13 holes to match Ghim at 15 under.
Kurt Kitayama and Gary Woodland each completed rounds of 6-under 65 on Saturday, leaving them at 14 under. Also at 14 under are Harris English and Argentina’s Alejandro Tosti, who are both 4 under through 14 holes in the third round.
South Korea’s K.H. Lee is in the clubhouse at 13 under after a third-round 65. He is tied for seventh place with J.J. Spaun (5 under through 17 holes), Davis Thompson (5 under through 16), Norman Xiong (1 under through 13), Canada’s Taylor Pendrith (3 under through 13) and Germany’s Matti Schmid (even par through 13).
Ghim logged three birdies and nine pars before he got hot, reeling off birdies at the par-5 13th hole, the par-3 14th hole, the par-4 15th hole and the par-5 16th hole before play was stopped.
Poston parred every hole he played in the third round except for one, when he eagled the par-5 ninth hole. He drove the green in two before rolling in a 3-foot putt.
Earlier on Saturday, Poston completed the delayed second round by going birdie-eagle-birdie-par to leave him tied for the lead with Schmid. He tied for third in the event last year.
“I like this golf course,” Poston said ahead of the start of the third round. “It sort of the fits my eye. The greens are bentgrass, what I grew up on. A lot of familiar stuff about this week that I enjoy.
“It’s a tournament I love coming back and playing. Obviously would like to finish it off. I had a good chance last year I felt like, just never quite finished my rounds off last year. Hopefully can change that this year.”
HANNAH GREEN SEEKS WIRE-TO-WIRE WIN AT BMW LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP
Hannah Green shot a third-round 70 to move to 18-under par and take a two-stroke lead into the final round at the BMW Ladies Championship in Paju, South Korea, on Saturday.
It was a busy day of golf after Friday’s second round was suspended due to persistent rain showers that left the Seowon Hills course at Seowon Valley Country Club unplayable. None of the 78 players in the field completed the second round, which led to an early start Saturday.
Green had nine holes left to complete when play was called Friday and stood at 12-under through 27 holes. She finished the second round with four birdies on the back nine to card her second consecutive 64 and move to 16-under through two rounds.
But the Australian couldn’t match her bogey-free second round, starting the front nine with three bogeys and a birdie. On the back nine, she made up lost ground with two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 15 for a round of 70.
That left room for South Korea’s Yu Jin Sung to make a run toward the top of the leaderboard, finishing the second round at 70, then firing nine birdies to finish with a 63 to move her to16-under 200 through 54 holes.
South African Ashleigh Buhai (66 second round, 71 Saturday) is three shots back of Green at 15-under par, with Ryann O’Toole (65, 68) and South Korean Haeran Ryu (69, 68) tied for fourth at 14 under.
Green said her third-round score didn’t necessarily reflect the way she played Saturday.
“Yeah, I felt like I didn’t actually hit that many bad shots on the front nine, I just couldn’t really get anything going,” she said. “I guess the momentum from shooting 16-under in two rounds kind of fell off, and I was getting angry at things that I probably shouldn’t have. But, yeah, it was really nice to see a putt go in on 11, obviously make a birdie on the par-5.
“And then hit a really nice tee shot on 14, the par-3. And then, yeah, holed a monster putt on 15. So that really changed the momentum and I guess the taste in my mouth for tomorrow. It definitely could have been worse, but I’m really proud that I was able to shoot under par.”
Green is searching for her third victory of the season, but she has never finished higher than a tie for 10th in four prior starts at the BMW Ladies Championship.
For Sung, a tour rookie, her third round was her second 63 of the season. The Korean is seeking to become the first 2024 rookie to win a tournament.
“I will try my best to stop my nerves getting to me,” Sung said, looking ahead to Sunday. “Many players out there that can shoot low scores in a day, must keep that in mind. Must focus on my game, whilst recognizing that I am not the only who can make birdies out there.”
Defending champion Minjee Lee of Australia finished the second round with a 73 but put together seven birdies and a bogey for a third-round 66 to stand at 10 under and tied for 18th place.
Green is seeking a wire-to-wire win. She set the tournament record with her 128 total after 36 holes, then set the 54-hole scoring record at Seowon Valley and tied the overall record of 198, which is a career best for her through 54 holes.

CHRISTOPHER BELL COLLECTS THIRD BUSCH LIGHT POLE AWARD AT LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS — Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell earned the pole position for Sunday’s South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (2:30 p.m. ET, NBC, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) — his third pole of the year and third at the 1.5-mile Vegas high banks.
Saturday’s lap of 185.344 mph in the No. 20 JGR Toyota bested fellow NASCAR Cup Series Playoff driver Tyler Reddick’s No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota by a slight .013-second. It marks the 13th career pole position for the 29-year old Bell, however a win Sunday would be his first victory from the top starting spot on the grid.
The second-place starter has won the last three Las Vegas races. Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch is the last driver to win at Vegas from pole position — in 2009.
“I feel really good, I feel really comfortable,” said Bell, who is currently ranked second to Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson in the championship as the three-race Round of 8 takes the green flag Sunday.
“I’ve been in this position many a time and haven’t won the race . …We’ve come close several times and this is a great race track for me so I’m really optimistic. I think we’ve got the car to do it.”
Six of the eight Playoff cars advanced to the final round of qualifying including Bell’s JGR teammate Denny Hamlin, who will roll off fourth. Larson — who has won the last two races in Las Vegas — will start fifth, Hendrick’s William Byron and Team Penske’s Joey Logano, who will start ninth and 10threspectively.
Hendrick’s Alex Bowman,, who was eliminated from Playoff contention just last week, will start third. Spire Motorsports rookie Carson Hocevar will roll off sixth. Trackhouse Racing’ Ross Chastain (seventh) and JGR’s Ty Gibbs (eighth) were the other drivers to advance to the final qualifying round.
Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott was one of only two Playoff drivers who did not make the final round of time trials and he will start his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet 18th.
The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion, Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, had an incident during practice — hitting the wall after cutting a rear tire — and was forced to miss qualifying. He will put a back-up No. 12 Penske Ford on the grid, starting last in the 37-car field.
Of note, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson will start 29th in the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota — the eighth start of the season for the team’s owner-driver. New Zealander Shane Van Gisbergen will start 34th in the Kaulig Racing No. 16 Chevrolet.

NO. 16 INDIANA ROUTS NEBRASKA 56-7 TO STAY UNBEATEN; ROURKE INJURES HAND AND MISSES 2ND HALF
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Justice Ellison ran for 105 yards and two first-half touchdowns and No. 16 Indiana continued its best start in 57 years with a 56-7 rout of Nebraska on Saturday, matching the Hoosiers’ most lopsided Big Ten win in program history.
Hoosiers quarterback Kurtis Rourke injured his right (throwing) hand and was on the sideline in street clothes in the second half. Tayven Jackson replaced him for the rest of the game.
“A little thumb thing, I feel good about it, I really do,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said of Rourke. “It was precautionary (to take him out).”
The Hoosiers (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) have yet to trail this season and each victory has been by double digits. The 49-point margin of victory was the biggest in conference play since a 49-0 win at Minnesota in 1945. The last time Indiana started with seven consecutive wins was 1967, when it opened 8-0.
Cignetti is the first coach in program history to win his first seven games. He’s never had a losing season in 14 years as a head coach.
“I’m not going to let ‘em get complacent, and not the coaches, either,” Cignetti said. “I was a maniac in the fourth quarter.”
The Cornhuskers (5-2, 3-2) were supposed to be the stiffest opposition to date for Indiana. But the only defense in the country to not allow a rushing touchdown surrendered five, including Ellison’s 5-yard TD on the opening possession.
“We’ve got some real blue-collar guys up front,” Cignetti said. “They put a good day’s work in.”
Ellison, a senior transfer from Wake Forest, added a 31-yard TD rush for a 28-7 lead just before halftime. His 105 yards came on just nine carries.
“This happened on my watch,” Nebraska second-year coach Matt Rhule said. “And I’ll be honest, I didn’t see this coming. I’m not embarrassed of our players, but I’m embarrassed about the job I did.”
Rourke completed 17 of 21 passes for 189 yards with one TD and one interception. He threw a 7-yard TD pass to Myles Price for a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
“You keep winning, people are going to come,” Cignetti said after Indiana’s first sellout since 2021.
Jackson added a pair of scoring passes to Miles Cross and Elijah Sarratt.
Ty Son Lawton ran for 64 yards on eight carries with a 1-yard TD. The Hoosiers averaged 9.3 yards per offensive play in the first half.
A Nebraska defense that had limited five of six opponents to 10 points or less allowed a season high in points to the nation’s No. 2 scoring offense, which entered with a 47.5-point average.
Nebraska freshman Dylan Raiola completed 28 of 44 passes for 234 yards with three interceptions and a lost fumble.
The takeaway
Nebraska: A slow start coming off an open date kept getting worse as the Cornhuskers suffered their most lopsided loss since Ohio State beat them 62-3 in 2016. The defense couldn’t get stops and the offense failed to score on three red-zone drives.
Indiana: The schedule looks to be more challenging with home games against Washington and Michigan as well as a road trip to Ohio State, but the Hoosiers’ confidence continues to rise. Projected to finish 17th in the 18-team league, the upstart Hoosiers have established themselves as legitimate title contenders.
Poll implications
The Hoosiers could earn a big promotion in the Top 25 depending on how teams ahead of them fare Saturday.

HOOSIERS SWEPT IN FRONT OF SOLD-OUT CROWD
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – In front of a Big Ten regular season match record crowd of 14.876 fans, the Indiana Volleyball team (9-9, 2-6 B1G) was turned back by No. 10 Purdue. The Hoosiers fell in straight sets (18-25, 14-25, 9-25) at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette. The record crowd was also the biggest crowd for a volleyball match in state history.
IU struggled offensively against Purdue, hitting just .061 (27-20-115) across the three-set match. IU was blocked only four times but committed 16 unforced attacking errors. Junior middle blocker Madi Sell was the most efficient attacker, terminating on six kills (.417, 6-1-12).
Sophomore libero Ramsey Gary was phenomenal defensively for the Hoosiers. The Pendleton, Ind. native tallied 20 digs, the second time she’s eclipsed the 20-dig threshold in just three sets (21 vs. Michigan, Oct. 14, 2023). In conference play this year she’s averaging 4.82 digs per set.
With a massive Purdue crowd at its back, IU struggled in serve receive. Purdue recorded nine aces, multiple of those on communication errors. Boilermaker sophomore setter Taylor Anderson had three of those nine aces and kept IU from running any sort of offense.
Purdue’s outstanding left side duo of Eva Hudson and Chloe Chicoine had more kills (29) than IU’s entire roster (27). Junior opposite hitter Avry Tatum finished with a team high in kills (7). Sell (6) and Outside hitters Candela Alonso-Corcelles (6) and Mady Saris (5) all had at least five.
IU’s gauntlet run of matches continues Thursday night in Bloomington. No. 9 Wisconsin visits Wilkinson Hall for a match on FS1. Connor Onion (PxP) and Emily Ehman (Color) will be on-site with the call.
Set Breakdown
Set 1: Purdue 25, Indiana 18
IU held its own early on but wore down as the set continued. IU hit .205 (12-4-39) but Purdue dominated offensively (.368, 16-2-38). Both teams showed impressive displays of defensive prowess with 17 digs a piece from either side. Ramsey Gary had nine of her own, the second time this season she’s had at least nine in a set. Purdue had four aces from the service line which made a big different opening up a lead.
• IU briefly held the lead ay 7-6 after Purdue opposite hitter Kenna Wollard soared a ball out of bounds. From there, Purdue responded on a 9-3 run heading into the media timeout. Purdue middle blocker Raven Colvin terminated on a kill to take a 15-10 advantage into the break.
• Things didn’t get better out of the media timeout as Purdue went on a 7-2 run, capped by a service ace from reserve defensive specialist Rachel Williams. She had consecutive aces, one on Candela Alonso-Corcelles and one on a communication error.
• IU fended off the first four set points. Madi Sell, Alonso-Corcelles and Avry Tatum all had kills. Alonso-Corcelles terminated after a long rally that began with Haworth kick saving the ball. Purdue was finally able to close out the set with a big rip from Colvin out of the middle.
Set 2: Purdue 25, Indiana 14
Purdue made life difficult on IU in the second set as the visitors slumped to a negative team hitting percentage (-.050, 6-8-40). IU got three of its six kills from Alonso-Corcelles. She also had a pair of blocks. IU did its best to limit Purdue offensively but outstanding back row play kept rallies alive. Those eventually turned into points as the hosts pulled away for a commanding win.
• Purdue libero Ali Hornung aced Alonso-Corcelles down the line to go up 9-4 and force head coach Steve Aird into a timeout. The Boilermakers won a big challenge earlier in the set to reverse the score to 7-4 following a shot from outside hitter Morgan Geddes that sailed long.
• IU showed some fight as it rattled off a 6-0 run behind the serve of Gary. Alonso-Corcelles had a pair of blocks during the run while the Purdue offense struggled to side out. Purdue left side Chloe Chicoine was finally able to get the kill to break the run and go back up 15-11.
• After Purdue took the timeout at 14-10, it finished the set on a massive 11-4 run. With Camryn Haworth banged up, she struggled to locate her sets. IU struggled offensively with some big hitting errors.
Set 3: Purdue 25, Indiana 9
Paired with the opening set during a match at No. 1 Texas, the third set against Purdue was as bad as IU played all season. Purdue went errorless offensively (13-0-26), hitting ,500 in game three. Eva Hudson terminated on eight kills from 14 errorless swings. It also got three blocks and two aces. IU got just nine kills in game three and struggled to side out. Gary got six kills to take her to 20 for the match.
• IU scored the first two points of the set but Purdue responded on a 15-2 run with IU forced to burn both timeouts in the opening 19 points. The lead got as big as 16 (4-20) with Hudson getting any shot she wanted against IU’s block.

#10 PURDUE SETS BIG TEN MATCH ATTENDANCE RECORD IN MONON SPIKE SWEEP
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In front of 14,876 fans, the largest crowd ever for a Big Ten regular-season match, the No. 10 Purdue Boilermakers regained the rights to the Monon Spike in sweeping fashion vs. Indiana (25-18, 25-14, 25-9). The match was held in a sold-out Mackey Arena.
Purdue moves to 41-11 all-time in home matches vs. Indiana and has won 20 of the last 22 Monon Spike trophy matches.
The nine points allowed in Set 3 were the fewest ever in the rivalry’s history since 2000 (prior to then, points were scored to 15 instead of the modern era’s 25). Additionally, Purdue went errorless in the third set, hitting .500% (13-0-26). In fact, Purdue has gone errorless in the final set of its match in three of the last four outings (Set 5 at #2 Nebraska, Set 5 vs. UCLA and Set 3 vs. Indiana).
Purdue out-hit Indiana .333 to .061%. Not only did the Boilermakers hold the Hoosiers to a Purdue-opponent season-low, but the mark was the lowest Big Ten opponent hitting % in two years, which last also came at Indiana (.057%).
Chloe Chicoine went errorless in the match, hitting 12 kills on 30 swings for a .400 attack % in her double-double performance with 10 digs.
Meanwhile, like her uniform number, Eva Hudson recorded a team-leading 17 kills with just two errors on 36 swings (.417 %).
Freshman defensive specialist produced a career-high 15 digs, leading the team with 17 receptions. As a team, Purdue posted a perfect reception % and registered nine service aces, third-most in a match this season.
Setter Taylor Anderson dished out a double-double behind 28 assists and 10 digs while also leading the team and matching a career-high three aces.
Purdue improves to 15-4 (6-2 Big Ten) while Indiana falls to 9-9 (2-6 Big Ten). The match lasted an hour and 28 minutes.
The attendance record bested the 20-year-old record of 10,927 fans in the #23 Illinois at #2 Minnesota match on October 16, 2004. The Boilermakers now hold two of the top three attendance records for two Big Ten opponents facing each other in the regular season (other: 10,570 fans at Purdue on October 17, 2008).
Currently, Purdue leads the league in kills (970), blocks (196.0), Digs (1,058) and assists (902) and rank second in receive % (94.7%).
Purdue will be back for a pair of home matches next week. First in a midweek showdown, Purdue will host Ohio State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network. Then, Purdue will return to Mackey Arena for its second Mackey match Saturday in a top-10 matchup. The Boilermakers are set to host No. 9 Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

IRISH SCORE 31 STRAIGHT POINTS TO SUBDUE GEORGIA TECH
The University of Notre Dame football team (6-1) rattled off 31 consecutive points while holding Georgia Tech’s rushing offense to 64 total yards in a 31-14 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Irish were led on offense by quarterback Riley Leonard, who shook off an early-game interception to complete 20-of-29 passes for 203 yards while rushing for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Jeremiyah Love posted 93 total yards and a rushing touchdown while safety Adon Shuler capped the Irish scoring with a 36-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter.
Shuler’s play provided a late-game highlight for the Irish defense which was led by a career-high nine tackles from sophomore linebacker Drayk Bowen who made plays all over the field. Freshman cornerback Leonard Moore also had seven tackles, a tackle-for-loss and two pass break ups in his second career start.
Notre Dame moved the ball into Georgia Tech territory on their second possession of the game, but Leonard overthrew a deep route into the Yellow Jacket end zone that was intercepted by the defense and returned out to the 29-yard line.
Georgia Tech drove into Notre Dame territory down to the Irish four-yard line for a first down. The Yellow Jackets fumbled the ball attempting to power through the line for a score, received a favorable bounce and the running back recovered the ball on the end zone line for the touchdown.
Notre Dame tied the game on its next drive keyed early in the series by Jeremiyah Love. Love gained 25 yards on three consecutive plays – two runs and a reception – followed by a tight end screen to Mitchell Evans moved the ball deep into GT territory. The Yellow Jackets stepped up to force third down with three yards to go on the 13-yard line. Leonard beat the blitz with a quick pass out in the flat to Aneyas Williams, who fought his way down to the three-yard line. Three plays later, Leonard powered in to tie the game at 7-7.
The Irish defense quickly put the ball back in the offense’s hands with a three-and-out. The ensuing drive was keyed by Love and Kris Mitchell, who posted back-to-back catch and runs to move the ball to the Georgia Tech 29. Leonard then found Beaux Collins for 11 yards on back-to-back plays to get to the Yellow Jacket 11-yard line and the two-minute warning before halftime.
On the next play, Leonard kept the ball on an option play to the right and ran untouched into the end zone for his 10th rushing score of the season. On the play, Leonard became just the third Notre Dame quarterback to rush for double digit touchdowns in a season (Brandon Wimbush, 14 in 2017, DeShone Kizer 10 in 2015).
Georgia Tech did put together a possible scoring drive before halftime and lined up for a 39-yard field goal attempt, but the holder misplayed a high snap and the Irish defense suffocated the kicker for a 16-yard loss, allowing the team to enter halftime with a seven-point lead.
After the break the Irish defense earned an immediate three-and-out and the offense took advantage. Leonard connected with Jaden Greathouse for 28 yards to get into Georgia Tech territory, then the Irish ran three consecutive times for two first downs. Collins ran a great slant route to put the ball at the one-yard line and Love finished off the drive, dancing untouched into the end zone to put the Irish up 21-7.
The Yellow Jackets earned one first down on their next possession, but the Irish defense forced yet another punt, evening pushing the Yellow Jackets back to third-and-20 after two false start penalties.
Notre Dame would be able to get a couple first downs on their next drive, but the Yellow Jackets eventually forced a punt and looked to gain a bit of momentum with a 60-yard catch and run to the Irish 16-yard line.
The Irish defense, though, refused to relent. A three-yard rush, then a tackle-for-loss from Jaiden Ausberry and a Rylie Mills sack forced another GT field goal attempt. The sack was just the second allowed by the Yellow Jacket offensive line in 2024.
Freshman Bryce Young blocked the field goal attempt and Notre Dame remained in the lead by two scores as the teams entered the fourth quarter.
The Irish defense continued to get stops, but for the time being, the Yellow Jacket defense was matching them. Leonard was stopped short on a fourth down play, but Xavier Watts quickly ended the next Georgia Tech drive with his 10th career interception.
Notre Dame looked like they were going to be stopped again, but the Irish special teams came to the fore with a reverse fake punt to Love for 27 yards. The Irish eventually saw Zac Yoakam convert his first career field goal, from 42 yards out, to push the Irish up 24-7.
As Georgia Tech desperately tried to get back into the game late in the fourth quarter, Adon Shuler caught an overthrown pass at the 36-yard line and returned it for a touchdown to record the 31st consecutive point by Notre Dame.
Georgia Tech would tack on a touchdown with just 23 seconds left against Notre Dame’s back up players to represent the final score of 31-14.
BUTLER VOLLEYBALL
BUTLER OFFENSE STAYS HOT SWEEPING GEORGETOWN 3-0
INDIANAPOLIS — The Bulldogs closed out the homestand on a high note after sweeping Georgetown (27-25, 25-20, 25-23) to earn their third conference win in a row. Alaleh Tolliver led the match with 13 kills while Destiny Cherry dominated the middle of the net hitting for .615 with eight kills.

The Hoyas came ready to play in Set 1 taking an early 10-2 lead. Butler would slowly creep back into the set, cutting the lead down within a point at 18-17 after a 5-0 run led by kills from Alaleh Tolliver. Georgetown would fight back to make the score 24-20. However, for the second match in a row, the Bulldogs rallied back scoring five straight points to regain the lead at 25-24. Abby Maesch would then help complete the comeback scoring consecutive kills to complete the comeback in Set 1.
Butler 25-20
The Bulldogs dominated in Set 2 jumping out to a 7-3 lead using kills from Tolliver and Destiny Cherry. They would continue to pile on the score extending their lead to 16-10 after a serving ace by Alaleh Tolliver. Butler eventually closed out the second set with a Tolliver kill to win 25-20.

Kills from Tolliver and Laiya Ebo gave the Bulldogs an early 6-4 lead in Set 3. Cora Taylor’s serving ace then helped the Bulldogs add to their lead at 13-8. Georgetown would bring the set back to within a point at 23-22, but Butler fired back scoring the next two points capped off by a kill from Grace Boggess to secure the sweep.

FLEA FLICKER PUSHES DAYTON PAST BUTLER 21-14
The Butler football team took a tough 21-14 loss to Dayton on Saturday afternoon at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl. BU scored a touchdown with less than six minutes remaining on the game clock and added a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14, but a 33-yard pass from VanVleet to Brenner went down as the game-winner to keep Dayton undefeated in PFL action.
Butler’s defense was on full display during the first half of the contest limiting Dayton to just seven points. Adam Sturtz and Danny Orgler were each credited with sacks in the first half, but the Flyers would hang onto a 7-3 advantage. The lone TD of the opening 30 minutes was setup after a BU fumble on special teams. The Flyers would take advantage of the short field and score an 8-yard touchdown on a pass from VanVleet to Coleman. Butler’s three points came off the leg of Ryan Short. He connected on a 32-yard attempt as time expired.
The first points of the second half came late in the third quarter with VanVleet finding Brenner for a 22-yard score. Butler’s second field goal of the game made it 14-6 as Short hit from 37 yards out.
Fourth quarter action picked up on a third and long conversion as Nick Howard found Luke Wooten down the far side of the field for a gain of 33 yards. Wooten made an incredible juggling catch to set up the ‘Dawgs for a scoring drive. BU would punch it in on an eight-yard TD rush from Andrew and Howard would plunge in the end zone for the two-point conversion making the game 14-14.
Dayton kept their foot on the gas and a nice play call would help the visitors exit Indy with a road win. The Flyers rushed for 183 yards on the day and were sticking with the run late in the game for a chance at a late field goal attempt. The Flyer offense faked out a crowd of over 3,000 people and used a flea flicker to get behind the Bulldog defense. Brenner caught his second TD of the game with just 11 seconds to go to help Dayton pull out the win.
Drew VanVleet didn’t have an incomplete pass in the first half and would end the game going 11-for-14 with three touchdowns. Mason Hackett was great on the ground with 111 rushing yards.
Butler’s rushing attack was led by Andrew who carried the rock eight times for 87 yards and the score. Andrew was also 10-for-14 through the air for 50 yards.
The top BU target on the outside was Luke Wooten. He came up with six grabs for 50 yards.
The Bulldog defense was disruptive throughout the day to record four sacks and nine tackles for loss. Danny Orgler, Nick Bafia and Will Mason were the top tacklers on the team with seven each. Justin Anagonye and D’Marco Cross also enjoyed sacks on Saturday.
The Bulldogs will now travel to Davidson for their next contest on Saturday October 26th. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
IU INDY VOLLEYBALL
JAGS RALLY FOR COMEBACK WIN OVER YOUNGSTOWN STATE, 3-2
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The IU Indianapolis volleyball team left Youngstown with a win after securing the reverse sweep over the Penguins, 3-2. Briana Brown and Elle Patterson each tallied 16 kills to lead the Jaguars’ attack.
The match started with Youngstown state taking control, winning the first two sets. The Penguins took the opening set, 25-18 followed by a dominated second set, 25-10. The Jags hit -0.50 to fall behind two sets to none.
IU Indy refused to leave Youngstown on a bad note. They rallied in the third set, winning a tight 26-24 match to shift the momentum in their favor. The Jags continued their comeback in the fourth set, earning a 25-20, forcing the decisive fifth set.
In the final set, IU Indy recorded their best hitting percentage of the match with a .429 mark to edge out the Penguins, 15-12.
Patterson and Brown added a significant boost to the offense with their 16 kills each. Grace Purichia aided the attack with 44 assists while Jordyn Pax led the defense with 23 digs.
The win boosts the Jags to a 3-6 record in Horizon League play. IU Indy hopes to build on the momentum when they travel to Oakland next weekend for back-to-back matches on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26.

CARDINALS LOSE TOUGH BATTLE TO VANDERBILT
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Ball State Cardinals brought the fight to Nashville on Saturday evening, highlighted by a career-high tackling night for linebacker Joey Stemler and another stellar receiving night for tight end Tanner Koziol. But even after Koziol’s game-tying TD midway through the third period, Vanderbilt pulled away from the Cardinals for a 24-14 final score in front of 27,884 at FirstBank Stadium.
Following a 38-yard field goal that gave Vanderbilt a 17-14 advantage just moments into the fourth quarter, Commodores’ quarterback Diego Pavia ran the ball five yards into the endzone for the game’s final score with 7:48 remaining. Claiming a third straight win, including its monumental upset over top-ranked Alabama on the same field two weeks ago, Vandy moved to 5-2 overall and while Ball State fell to 2-5.
Stemler’s career-best 11 tackles were just one part of Ball State’s best defensive showing of the season, matching the most by a Cardinal this season. Coming off a three-sack performance against Kent State last week, Brandon Berger secured his fourth sack in two weeks as part of a big third quarter for the Cardinals. Berger also secured a goal-line tackle in the second quarter, preventing a touchdown and causing Vanderbilt to settle one of its three field goals. Defensive leader Keionte Newson managed seven tackles and a key pass break-up in the third period.
The defensive effort put Ball State in position to capitalize and find confidence against a Commodores team that has become one of college football’s biggest stories in recent weeks. When Kadin Semonza found Koziol for a 7-yard score midway through the third period, the Cardinals were putting themselves in position for another upset in the Music City.
Ball State’s offense was aggressive from the outset, scoring on the game’s opening drive with an 11-play, 75-yard series that ended with utility man Kiael Kelly running nine yards to paydirt off a direct snap. Semonza, a redshirt freshman, was a perfect 6-of-6 passing on the drive, and was 7-of-9 in the first quarter. Semonza also was a perfect 5-of-5 in the third quarter, and finished the game completing 72 percent of his attempts for 190 yards.
Ball State even got special teams help behind the efforts of punter Brian Cooey Jr., who averaged 42 yards on six attempts. The Cardinals’ punt team twice pinned the Commodores to start drives at their own 3-yard line. Vandy led 14-7 at the intermission, but only after settling for a pair of field goals and using a two-point conversion just before halftime.
The Cardinals kept knocking in the third period and engineered a 94-yard drive to announce their continuing quest for the upset. Five plays into the drive, TJ Horton’s 9-yard run on fourth-and-one sparked the tying possession. Cam Pickett made a 29-yard grab just outside the red zone, Justin Bowick corralled a 14-yard pass and Koziol knotted the score as the Cardinals moved methodically in the Nashville night.
Koziol caught nine balls for 68 yards and became the first tight end in Ball State history to eclipse 50 catches and 500 yards in a single season.
While Ball State managed 14 first downs through three quarters, the Cardinals only collected two in the pivotal fourth, with Semonza absorbing both Vanderbilt sacks in the final period.
Ball State returns to Mid-American Conference play next week while hosting Northern Illinois in the Cardinals’ 97th homecoming game. Kickoff at Scheumann Stadium is 3:30 p.m. The game will be carried live on ESPN+ and the Ball State Gainbridge Radio Network.

MISSOURI STATE’S SECOND-HALF SURGE LEADS BEARS PAST SYCAMORES ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State scored 29 second-half points to pull away from Indiana State on Saturday afternoon as the Sycamores were unable to upset the No. 20 Bears in Springfield, Mo. with the 46-21 loss.
The Sycamores (2-5, 1-2) came out early in the contest with offensive fireworks as Rashad Rochelle broke loose with a 63-yard reception on Indiana State’s first play from scrimmage and Shen Butler-Lawson capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge to give the Sycamores the early lead. Later in the first half, Elijah Owens founded a wide-open Rochelle on a wheel route in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown catch to give Indiana State the 15-10 lead.
The Bears (5-2, 3-0) rallied back on Jacob Clark’s arm as the Missouri State signal caller threw three touchdown passes including a 27-yard strike to James BlackStrain before the half. Clark added touchdown passes of 82 yards to Lance Mason and 21 yards to Hunter Wood as the Bears scored 36 of the final 42 points in the contest to secure the Missouri Valley Football win.
Elijah Owens finished 12-of-17 through the air for 154 yards and a touchdown, but the Bears defense harried the Sycamore quarterback with five sacks in the contest. Rochelle was the primary target with a season-high 83 yards on three catches, while Ethan Chambers added two catches for 34 yards.
Butler-Lawson was Indiana State’s primary ball-carrier with six carries for 33 yards and a touchdown, while Plez Lawrence added eight carries for 22 yards.
Dallas Westhoff recorded his first double-digit tackling effort with a career-high 12 stops, including one of Indiana State defense’s five sacks in the game. Maddix Blackwell added eight tackles, while Geoffrey Brown had eight stops, a sack, and an interception in the loss. Joey Shew added a career-high two sacks, including a second-quarter strip-sack recovered by Braxton Sampson.
Jacob Clark finished 22-of-27 through the air for 379 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing an interception. Lance Mason was the team leader with four catches for 111 yards and a touchdown, while BlackStrain added five catches for 94 yards in the win.
Jacardia Wright scored a pair of short-yardage touchdown runs to highlight a 20-carry, 77-yard rushing effort. Jayden Becks added eight carries for 47 yards.
Tahj Chambers finished the game leading the Bears with nine tackles including 1.0 tackles-for-loss. Caleb Dietlin had a team-high 2.0 sacks among his five tackles, while Gilles Tchio had 2.0 TFLs.

Missouri State took the early 3-0 lead with 10:18 left in the first quarter as Yousef Obeid connected on a 30-yard field goal to cap the game-opening 10-play, 62-yard drive.
The Sycamores answered on their first possession as Shen Butler-Lawson took the ball up the middle for a one-yard touchdown plunge to end a three-play, 67-yard drive. The drive was highlighted by Rashad Rochelle’s 63-yard reception on the first play from scrimmage moving the ball down inside the Missouri State 5 yard line. Indiana State converted the two-point conversion to make it 8-3 with 8:39 to play in the first quarter.
Jacardia Wright responded with a two-yard touchdown run at the 4:58 mark in the first quarter to put Missouri State back in the lead, 10-8, to end an eight-play, 63-yard drive.
Elijah Owens hit Rochelle on a wheel route for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 10:24 remaining in the second quarter following the Sycamore defense posting a strip-sack and gathering the ball deep in Missouri State territory. The lead hit 15-10 following the extra-point conversion.
Missouri State retook the lead with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter as James BlackStrain hauled in the 27-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Clark to make it a 17-15 game heading into the half.
The Bears added to the lead early in the third quarter as Lance Mason hauled in an 82-yard touchdown pass with 9:42 remaining in the quarter to make it 24-15.
Wright added his second touchdown run of the game, this one from one-yard out, with 4:56 remaining in the third quarter, and Jmariyae Robinson caught the two-point conversion pass from Clark to make it a 32-15 game.
Owens kept the play alive and took the ball all the way to the right pilon in the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown run with 11:39 to play in the fourth quarter. However, the snap with mishandled on the extra point leaving it a 32-21 game.
Missouri State added to their lead on Hunter Wood’s 21-yard touchdown reception from Clark with 8:04 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it a 39-21 contest.
The Bears capped the scoring with 1:27 to play as Clark went around the right side for a five-yard touchdown run to provide the final 46-21 margin.

Dallas Westhoff became the seventh Indiana State player to record double-digit tackles on Saturday afternoon and fourth player to post his first career 10-plus tackling effort in the 2024 season joining Kaleal Davis, Lucas McAllister, and Micah Hauser.
Geoffrey Brown’s eight-tackle contest gives the senior linebacker 275 total tackles over his career. He’s pursuing becoming the 19th Indiana State player to hit the 300-tackle mark in program history and first since Jonas Griffith (382, 2016-19).
Rashad Rochelle’s 63-yard reception in the first quarter marked a season-long for the Sycamore wide receiver and the longest Indiana State reception of the 2024 season. It marked Indiana State’s longest reception since Dante Hendrix posted a 67-yard reception in the fourth quarter against Illinois State back on Oct. 22, 2022.

VALPO FALLS TO ST. THOMAS ON SATURDAY
The Valparaiso University football team got a first-quarter rushing score from Ryan Mann (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Vernon Hills [Northern Illinois]) and an impressive touchdown catch from Jack Coulson (Boca Raton, Fla. / Olympic Heights [Kent State / Holy Cross]), but the Beacons were on the wrong end of a 42-14 score against St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon at Brown Field.
How It Happened
After both teams punted on their opening drives, St. Thomas got on the board with a 74-yard touchdown completion from quarterback Tak Tateoka to Colin Chase.
The Beacons put together a response, going 61 yards on seven plays for a touchdown drive that culminated with a Mann four-yard burst to tie the game at seven with 3:00 left in the first quarter. Mann had a 15-yard run earlier in that drive, and Michael Appel Jr. (Springboro, Ohio / Springboro) hooked up with Jack Coulson (Boca Raton, Fla. / Olympic Heights [Kent State / Holy Cross]) for a 13-yard pass to move the ball inside the 5-yard line and set up the Mann score.
A 44-yard catch by Eli Paulson set up the Tommies at the 1-yard line, and Hope Adebayo plunged in from a yard out to put the guests in front 14-7 with 11:17 left in the second quarter.
The Tommies forced and recovered a fumble, taking over at the Valpo 23. On the second play of the ensuing drive, a 17-yard TD grab by Jac Wildermuth widened the gap to 21-7 with 9:10 left of second-quarter time.
Another fumble recovery set the Tommies up with another short field, and they took advantage with a 1-yard TD run by Gabriel Abel to extend the lead to 28-7 with 7:07 left until halftime. That stood as the halftime score.
The two teams exchanged punts throughout the third quarter with neither squad cracking the scoreboard. Valpo broke through early in the fourth with the first scoring of the second half by either team as Coulson made a nice grab on a 30-yard pass from Caron Tyler (Temecula, Calif. / Chaparral) for a touchdown to make it 28-14 with 12:27 to play.
The two-score game was short-lived as St. Thomas used just 2:19 to march 77 yards for a score to make it 35-14 with 10:01 on the clock. Adebayo had all 77 yards on the drive with runs of 49, 20 and 5 before a 3-yard TD. The Tommies tacked on one more score on a 44-yard rush by Joseph Koch with 3:59 remaining to account for the final margin.
Inside the Game
Coulson’s impressive catch represented a bright spot and marked his first score in a Valpo uniform. After entering the day with two catches for 12 yards, Coulson produced four grabs for a team-high 54 yards against the Tommies.
Mann had a season-high 69 rushing yards on 17 carries. His touchdown was his first of the season and the fourth of his career.
After missing Valpo’s previous game with an injury, Jake Birmingham (River Forest, Ill. / Oak Park and River Forest) returned to the field and registered a season-high 11 tackles including five solos. He tied a career high for tackles set way back on Nov. 5, 2022, also against St. Thomas.
Redshirt senior Camari Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Bishop Luers [Akron / Northern Illinois]) collected eight tackles, representing a season high. He entered the game with 10 total for the season.
Redshirt senior Sam Johnson (Birmingham, Ala. / Oak Mountain [Jackson State / Alabama]) booted eight punts for 404 yards, averaging 50.5 yards per punt. Five of his eight punts traveled 50+ yards including a long of 57.
Junior Jeffery Vercher (Nashville, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) had six kickoff returns for 146 yards with a long of 44.
Redshirt junior Ryan Hawk (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) went 2-for-2 on PATs, improving to 9-for-9 this season.
Valpo produced 244 yards of total offense, more than its previous two PFL games combined, but was hurt by three turnovers, losing the turnover battle 3-0.
The Tommies racked up 424 yards of total offense, split almost exactly down the middle between rushing (213) and passing (211).
St. Thomas improved to 20-1 in its last 21 PFL games. Valpo’s two league home games so far this season were against the teams picked first and second in the PFL preseason poll, but it doesn’t get much easier at Brown Field as the two remaining games are against the teams picked third and fourth.

SPECIAL TEAMS HELP LIFT HOUNDS PAST BEARCATS
LEBANON, Ill. – The No. 19 UIndy football team went on the road Saturday and earned a 42-34 win at McKendree University. The Greyhounds blocked three kicks on the day—two field goals and an extra point—to stay unbeaten in GLVC play.
INS & OUTS
With the score knotted at 7-7, the UIndy special teams provided what may end up as the play of the year. After a McKendree drive stalled deep in UIndy territory, the Bearcats lined up for a chip-shot field goal. But at the snap, multiple Greyhounds exploded through the line, with redshirt-junior Brandon Smith swatting the kick in the opposite direction. Freshman Key Crowell scooped it up and took it 82 yards the other way for a score, giving the Hounds their first lead.
McKendree would creep within one point late in the second quarter, but UIndy ripped off three unanswered touchdowns to pull away. A big game from running back Jon Lewis helped put it out of reach. The senior out of Hermitage, Tenn., racked up a game-high 125 rushing yards while finding the end zone three times—most in his 17 games as a Greyhound.
On the other side of the ball, senior d-lineman Amarion Evans accounted for both of UIndy’s sacks, going for a combined loss of 18 yards. Crowell led the team with a season-best 10 total tackles, and San Flowers added a TFL.

– Smith also blocked an extra point late in the first half, while Diego Piche blocked a field goal in the third quarter.
– QB Gavin Sukup finished an uber efficient 15-for-18 passing for 209 yards. He added 43 rushing yards, including a 12-yard rushing score late in the third.
– Connor Kinnett—a quarterback-turned-tight end—also tossed a TD, finding Ethan Hand with a six-yard jump pass. Hand tops the team with four TD catches on the season.

OFFENSIVE FIRE-POWER LEADS NO. 17 MARIAN TO VICTORY OVER OLIVET NAZARENE
INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian football team returned to the win column on Saturday afternoon, staving off an Olivet Nazarene rally to earn a 45-40 homecoming victory over the Tigers. Marian is 5-1 on the season following the win, while starting MSFA Midwest play with a 1-0 record.
A heavy dosage of defensive plays opened the game before the scoring opened, as Marian went three and out on their opening series of the game, while Logan Carrington recorded his third interception of the season to kill Olivet Nazarene’s first possession of the game. The defensive presence continued as the Tigers held the Knights scoreless on a drive that featured a 60-yard completion from Tristan Polk to Tirae Spence as a field goal was missed, while Marian forced a punt as Olivet took back over on offense. Polk’s strong right arm made a play as he connected with Jake Reichard for 56-yards, but the play would be called back due to pass interference, and the drive stalled one play later as Polk fumbled the ball to Olivet Nazarene.
The scoreboard took its first dent after the fumble, as Evan Leake ran in an eight-yard score to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. After seeing the Tigers score, Marian responded with a scoring drive of their own, this time getting the big pass play between Polk and Reichard to stick as a 45-yard completion helped set up the quarterback’s seventh rushing touchdown on the season. Olivet punted as the second quarter started, and Marian again found the end zone, with Polk connecting to his top wideout Reichard on a 13-yard touchdown pass, pushing the home team in front 14-7.
Marian’s defense stood tall with their first lead since the overtime period at Taylor, forcing a punt that gave Marian possession with 9:11 remaining in the first half. After Max Autry’s punt return, the offense methodically moved the ball downfield, marching on a 21-play series that ended in a score, as Kenny Curry converted a 24-yard field goal after the offense came to a halt at the seven. Leading 17-7, Marian ended the first half with a defensive stand, as Joe Apata recorded 1.5 sacks on the final series after Jayshawn Underwood’s fourth interception was fumbled back to the Tigers.
The Knights started the second half strong with back-to-back punts forced by the defense, while the offense scored touchdowns after each of the free kicks. Keagan La Belle darted for 57 yards on Marian’s first series of the third quarter to set up Polk’s second rushing touchdown of the game, while the junior running back capped a 46-yard series with an 11-yard score just three minutes later to push the lead to 31-7.
La Belle’s touchdown run came with 7:43 remaining in the third quarter, and seemed to spring the Olivet Nazarene offense, as they responded with consecutive touchdown scores. A long kickoff return set up a Jack Miller touchdown throw, and after forcing Marian to punt they found the end zone in three plays that covered 92 yards, making it a 31-21 game. The Knights seemed to get off the hump and strung together a pair of positive offensive plays, but Jake Reichard would fumble after moving Marian into Tiger territory, and on the fourth play of the ensuing series, Miller completed a 52-yard touchdown pass to Ray Coffey to make it a three-point game just seconds into the fourth quarter.
The 21-point run ended just as quickly as it began, as Marian snapped the streak with a 90-yard drive of their own, getting a chunk play of 67 yards to Reichard to drive the team into the red zone. La Belle finished off the drive with his second touchdown of the game, giving Marian a 38-28 lead. Olivet would turn the ball over on downs on their next possession as a Cade Houseman sack on fourth down killed the series, while two plays later La Belle completed his second three-touchdown game of the season with a six yard scamper.
The final touchdown of the game for Marian gave them a 45-28 lead, but the Tigers would not go away, answering the score by La Belle with an Evan Leake touchdown pass, bringing the score within 11 as Olivet failed a two-point conversion. The Knights killed clock after the touchdown but not enough, as Olivet Nazarene took over with 2:51 to play, scoring after Miller found Blake Lamb for his second touchdown of the afternoon. Dwight Lewis III would intercept the two-point conversion making it a 45-40 game, and proceeded to recover the following onside kick, ending the game after three kneel downs in a Marian victory.
Marian out-gained Olivet Nazarene 545-414 in the game, with quarterback Tristan Polk pacing the offense by throwing for 347 yards and a touchdown while running for two more scores and 32 yards on the ground. La Belle rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns, and Reichard had a career-game, hauling in 10 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. Trey Gibson ran for 18 yards, and Tirae Spence caught four balls for 72 yards. Defensively, Logan Carrington had a career-game as well making his first start, recording 12 tackles and his third interception of the season. Underwood made six stops and had an interception, and Apata recorded 1.5 of the four sacks for Marian.
The Knights will end their three-game home stand next Saturday when they take on the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in the battle for the Franciscan Bowl Trophy.
WABASH FOOTBALL
WABASH TAKES DOWN HIRAM IN RETURN TO LITTLE GIANT STADIUM
CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN – Wabash returned to Little Giant Stadium for the first time in over month to earn a 56-7 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Hiram College. The Little Giants scored two first-quarter touchdowns, eventually taking a halftime lead on the way to a 28-0 halftime lead.
The Little Giants improved to 5-1 on the year and 4-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play to share the conference lead with arch-rival DePauw (6-0, 4-0 NCAC). The visiting Terriers fell to 0-5 and 0-3 in the NCAC.
The game was the first at home since Wabash opened 2-0 for the year with a 30-13 NCAC victory over Ohio Wesleyan University on September 14.
Brand Campbell led Wabash’s passing attack with 137 yards through the air, tossing three touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Xavier Tyler totaled 176 yards to lead the Little Giants’ ground attack and added one touchdown, picking up 9.3 yards per carry. Cole Dickerson also tacked on 56 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground, picking up 6.2 yards per carry.
Campbell’s most prolific target was Conner Thompson, who caught four passes for 58 yards and two scores. Kannon Chase caught three passes for 25 yards and one TD. He added a five-yard rushing touchdown for the game’s first score.
Michael Hegwood collected four tackles and one interception. Tanner Crouch added one interception, and Nick Page had one interception in the win. Brock Robertson paced the defense with six tackles. The interceptions extended the Little Giants’ streak of consecutive games with at least one pick to seven dating back to last year’s Monon Bell Classic versus DePauw.
The Little Giants won the turnover battle in Saturday’s game, forcing three turnovers while coughing the ball up once, with Wabash turning those takeaways into 14 points. Wabash put together a stellar outing on the ground, racking up 280 rushing yards while averaging 6.5 yards per carry and out-rushing Hiram by 223 yards. The Wabash offense extended drives well, converting on 60 percent of third-down attempts. The Little Giants also went 1-for-1 on fourth down.
Wabash’s defense limited Hiram’s offense, giving up 163 total yards. The Little Giants kept Hiram under 150 yards on both the ground and through the air, allowing 106 passing and 57 rushing yards. The Little Giants’ defense disrupted the Hiram passing attack on the way to pulling down three interceptions and breaking up four Terriers passes.
VINCENNES VOLLEYBALL
TRAILBLAZERS SPLIT THE DAY IN REGION 24 TRI-MATCH
VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University volleyball team concluded their busy weekend slate of Region 24 matches Saturday afternoon, hosting Lake Land College from Mattoon, Ill. and Southeastern Illinois College from Harrisburg, Ill. for a Region 24 tri-match inside the P.E. Complex.
The Trailblazers opened the day against Lake Land College and came out on the wrong end of a 22-25, 23-25, 24-26 final.
VU then turned around and played their third Region 24 match in under 24 hours against Southeastern Illinois College, taking the three set sweep 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 over the Falcons.
Vincennes began the day with a match against Lake Land College in a battle of the top two teams currently in the Region 24 standings.
This match proved to be very evenly fought as the two teams traded scoring runs in the opening set before the Lakers closed out set one 25-22 to open a 1-0 match lead.
Set two got off to a better start for the Trailblazers, using a 5-0 run to help build an early lead, which VU would grow to 21-14.
Lake Land would then come back firing, using seven straight points to climb all the way back and regain the lead before closing out set two, going the distance, 25-23 and taking a 2-0 match lead.
Set three was another back-and-forth battle with the two teams trading side outs throughout most of the set before VU looked to get a late advantage with a 22-18 lead.
Lake Land would chip away at this deficit, using a pair of 3-0 scoring runs to erase the margin and coming away with the 26-24 set three victory, closing out the match in three sets.
“I think Lake Land made all of the big plays,” VUVB Head Coach Gary Sien said. “Especially in the second and third sets where we had leads. At this point, this late in the season, it’s about consistency, chemistry, teamwork and we really lacked that today against Lake Land.”
“Obviously, Lake Land came to play,” Sien added. “I thought there was some pretty good effort on our side overall but it was individual play versus team play. All three sets were pretty close, just Lake Land got all the big plays. They got all of the points in the important junctures in the match. Our execution just wasn’t consistent enough from beginning to end.”
The VU offense was led by sophomore Isadora Dias (Rio Grande de Norte, Brazil) who came away with another double-double with 12 kills, 10 digs, one block and one set assist.
Sophomores Laura Tavares (Merida, Venezuela) and Elisa Dalla Pozza (Vincenza, Italy) also came through in the match with seven kills each.
Tavares would add three blocks and three digs to her totals, while Pozza added a team-high five blocks and one dig.
Freshman Martyna Sadowska (Pila, Poland) rounded out the VU offensive numbers with five kills and one block in the game.
The Trailblazer offense was run by sophomore setter Libby Mehringer (Jasper, Ind.) who finished with 18 set assists, five kills, three digs and one ace.
Freshman setter Rylee Edwards shared time on the floor with Mehringer to finish the match with 16 set assists, three digs and a pair of aces.
The VU back row defense was again led by sophomore libero Grace Flexter (Oblong, Ill.) who ended the match with eight digs and two set assists.
Freshman Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) led the Blazers in the match with13 digs, along with one block, while sophomore Allison Czyzewski rounded out the VU box score with a pair of blocks.
The Trailblazers looked to bounce back in the final match of the day and close out the weekend strong in their first meeting with Southeastern Illinois College of the year.
VU was able to jump out front early, taking advantage of several consecutive point runs to build a 21-12 lead and using a 4-0 scoring run to close out set one 25-15 to grab the early 1-0 match lead.
Vincennes would ride this momentum into another quick start in set two, opening up a 17-8 lead midway through the set.
Southeastern Illinois would continue to battle down the stretch but were unable to eat into the Trailblazer lead as VU grabbed set two 25-18, giving VU a 2-0 lead going into the third set.
Southeastern Illinois would not go down quietly though, grabbing the early momentum in set three with a 5-1 lead before VU answered back to even the score at 6-6.
VU would break away with a 4-0 run to take an 18-14 lead before the Falcons again answered back late in the set with a 4-0 run of their own.
Vincennes was able to get back on track and close out the third set 25-22 and complete the sweep over the Falcons.
“It’s always tough to play a team for the first time,” Sien said. “I guess the good thing is that we got the chance to play again right away and work on some of that teamwork and chemistry that I talked about from the first match. Overall, I thought we did pretty well there. The first and second sets I thought we had some good team play. I just thought we approached that game better as a team.”
“The third set was a little touch and go,” Sien added. “We did a lot of substituting so it’s kind of hard to gel when you’ve got so many people in and out. It’s the first time all year that we used all 15 of our substitutions. It was just good for us to get back out there and I think overall we took that pretty well.”
The Vincennes offense was again led by sophomore Isadora Dias who just missed out on a second double-double on the day, recording eight kills, seven digs, one set assist and one ace.
Martyna Sadowska added seven kills and two blocks to her stat line, while Paulina Fister added five kills and a team-high 10 digs.
Elisa Dalla Pozza and Allison Czyzewski controlled the middle position with Pozza ending the day with four kills, three blocks and two digs, while Czyzewski recorded two kills, three blocks and one dig.
Libby Mehringer ran the Trailblazer offense from the setter position, finishing with a team-high 13 set assists, to go along with six kills, three digs and a pair of blocks.
Sophomore setter Dylan DeCoursey (Montgomery, Ind.) ended her day with 12 set assists, four digs and two aces, while freshman Rylee Edwards chipped in with six set assists and two digs.
Grace Flexter controlled the back row defense with eight digs and three set assists, while freshman Ashley Earp (Mattoon, Ill.) added five digs and freshman Julianna Rettig (Antioch, Ill.) added two digs to her totals.
The Trailblazers now head into the final week of the regular season, with two of their final three matches on the road, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 22 when VU heads to Harrisburg, Ill. for another showdown against Southeastern Illinois College at 7:30 p.m. eastern.
Vincennes will then hit the road again Friday, Oct. 25 when VU heads to Robinson, Ill. to take on Lincoln Trail College at 7 p.m. eastern before closing out the 2024 regular season at home Saturday, Oct. 26 against Kaskaskia College on Sophomore Recognition Day at 12 p.m. eastern.
Other match results on the day include Lake Land College winning over Southeastern Illinois College 25-16, 25-19, 25-14.
“It’s another restart to our year,” Sien said. “We still have a chance at the No. 1 seed but we have to run the table and it puts us in a lot more difficult circumstances as far as the Region tournament. But we have too much talent and too much experience to not get this done. We just have to be able to find that chemistry and that teamwork every day that we are out here playing.”
“Right now, it has nothing to do with volleyball,” Sien added. “Now it’s about our mental state and our mindset. That has to be right there in those key moments and in these keys games, like against Lake Land.”

Troupe wrote a nice piece on Frank Seno on the Pro Football Researchers website in which he writes: “The 1946 Cardinals were a team on the upswing, and on October 20 in the Polo Grounds against the contending Giants in one of the most thrilling contests of the year Frank Seno set an NFL record with his 105-yard kick-off return for a touchdown. His coast-to-coast return gave the Cardinals a short lived 24 to 21 lead.” Short lived indeed as the Giants stormed back with a Howie Livingston 5 yard scamper for a score to lift the New York squad to a 28-24 win over the Cards.

Rosey Brown
October 20, 1932 – Charlottesville, Virginia – Roosevelt “Rosey” Brown is born. Rosey was an offensive tackle from Morgan State College in Baltimore who earned the Black All-American honors. Rosey was selected in the 27th round of the 1953 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. The Giants like that Brown was 6-3, 255-pound and possessed powerful arms and a willingness to work hard while learning per the Pro Football Hall‘s write up on him. Rosey played in the NFL for 13 seasons and earned a spot on 9 Pro Bowl rosters while being selected as an ALl-NFL player 8 times. Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined Roosevelt Brown in 1975.

October 20, 1941 – Don Trull a former quarterback from Baylor University was born. Don was an All-American and twice won the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the nation’s top passer. Trull threw for more than 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns in his career with the Baylor Bears. Lee Roy Selmon
October 20, 1954 – Eufaula, Oklahoma – Lee Roy Selmon was born as the youngest of nine children in the Selmon home. Lee Roy was a great student as he became a National Honor Society member while at Eufaula High School. After high school Selmon followed his two older brothers and played football at the University of Oklahoma. Lee Roy Selmon was a Defensive Tackle for the Sooners and a pretty good one at that. The NFF’s website provides that Lee Roy won the Outland and Lombardi Awards as the nation’s best lineman. In his three years as a starter, Oklahoma went 32- 1-1 and won two national championships. He was also selected to possess the NFF Scholar-Athlete in 1975. The National Football Foundation selected Lee Roy to enter into its College Football Hall of Fame in 1988. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used their very first ever Draft pick to select Lee Roy Selmon to play for their new team. He played 9 seasons in the NFL. For his career he registered 78 1/2 sacks, 380 QB pressures, forced 28 1/2 loose balls and he recovered 10 of these fumbles. The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined him in 1995.
Ray Childress
October 20, 1962 – Richardson, Texas – Ray Childress a defensive end from Texas A&M came into this world. Ray played with the Aggies from 1981 through 1984 and per the NFF had the most tackles of any lineman in the storied history of Texas A&M tallying 360 in his brilliant college career. Childress also added 25 sacks to his college resume, dropping QBs behind the line 15 times in 1983 alone. The NFF elected Ray Childress into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. Ray played in the NFL for 12 seasons, 11 of them with the Houston Oilers and finished his final pro year with the Dallas Cowboys. He was named first-team All-Pro five times and made five Pro Bowl appearances
Chad Hennings
October 20, 1965 -Elberton, Iowa – Chad Hennings a Defensive Tackle from the Air Force Academy was born. Chad played his first season at Air Force as a tight end, but he switched over to the defensive side of the ball as a sophomore. In 1985 the Falcons had their best season ever, as they finished ranked fifth in the nation and sported a 12-1 record. The NFF reports that as a senior Chad led the nation with 24 sacks and won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman he was also a unanimous All-America selection and repeated as an Academic All-America. Chad Hennings entered into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
Dexter Coakley
October 20, 1972 – Mt. Pleasant, SC – Dexter Coakley the linebacker from Appalachian State was born on that day. The standout linebacker starred at App State from 1993 through the 1996 seasons. Boasting 616 career tackles, Coakley was per the National Football Foundation’s website a three-time First Team All-America and the first two-time winner of the Buck Buchanan Award as Football Championship Subdivision’s top defender and was the first three-time Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Dexter Coakley was the first Hall of Fame inductee for Appalachian State when he entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. Dexter was picked in the third round by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1997 NFL Draft, and enjoyed a 10-year career with the Cowboys and the St. Louis Rams.

1910 A’s starter Jack Coombs, pitching with one day of rest, throws a six-hit complete game, beating the Cubs, 12-5, to give Philadelphia a commanding 3-0 lead in the World Series. ‘Colby Jack’ also collects three hits and drives in three runs in the West Side Park contest.
1931 Frankie Frisch, the Fordham Flash, is selected as the National League’s Most Valuable Player. The Cardinals’ second baseman (.311, 4, 82) is considered the World Champion Redbirds’ on-field leader.
1931 Mickey Mantle, the ‘Commerce Comet,’ is born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma. The newborn’s dad, a lead miner known as Mutt, names his son after Mickey Cochrane, not realizing the major league catcher’s real name is not Mickey but Gordon. The future Yankee outfielder is glad his father was unaware of this fact.
1964 Three days after resigning as manager of the World Champion Cardinals, Johnny Keane replaces Yogi Berra as the Yankees’ field boss. The new skipper of the Bronx Bombers will fare poorly next year, leading the aging team to their first losing season since 1925, finishing 27 games behind the Twins with a 77-82 record.
1964 Red Schoendienst, a favorite former player, is named the Cardinals’ new manager, replacing Johnny Keane, who resigned the day following the team’s Game 7 Fall Classic victory over New York. Albert will compile a 1,041-955 record for the Redbirds during 12 full seasons and two stints in 1980 and 1990 as interim skipper, capturing a World Championship in 1967 and an NL pennant in 1968.
1969 Joining the AFL’s New York Jets and the Apollo 11 astronauts, the Mets become the third group honored with a ticker-tape parade on Broadway this year. The World Champions attend three rallies throughout the Big Apple, with hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers enjoying the day-long festivities.
1972 After hitting only five home runs in the regular season, Gene Tenace goes deep for the fourth time in the World Series, hitting a three-run homer off Jim McGlothlin in the second inning of the A’s 5-4 loss to the Reds in Game 5. The Oakland catcher, who will be named the MVP of the series, ties the major league mark for round-trippers in a Fall Classic shared by Babe Ruth (Yankees, 1926), Lou Gehrig (Yankees, 1928), Duke Snider (Dodgers, 1952), and Hank Bauer (Yankees, 1958).
1982 On his 29th birthday, Keith Hernandez hits a game-tying two-run sixth-inning single off Bob McClure, helping the Cardinals capture their ninth world championship in franchise history and the first since 1967, beating Milwaukee at Busch Stadium, 6-3. The Brewers, playing in their first World Series, cannot hold on to a Game 7 lead, giving up five unanswered runs.

1987 🇻🇪 Twins right-hander starter Les Straker becomes the first Venezuelan to pitch in the World Series. At Busch Stadium, the Ciudad Bolivar native blanks the Cardinals for six innings on four hits before being removed for a pinch-hitter.
1988 The Dodgers become World Champions when Orel Hershiser limits the opposition to four singles in Game 5 of the World Series and beats the A’s, 5-1. The right-hander, who also won Game 2, is named the Most Valuable Player of the Fall Classic.
1990 The Reds complete their World Series sweep, beating the heavily favored A’s at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, 2-1. With ninth-inning help from Randy Myers, Jose Rijo earns his second win of the four-game series, going 8.1 innings.
1992 In Game 3 of the Fall Classic, the Blue Jays would have turned the second triple play in World Series history for not a missed call. After Devon White makes an outstanding grab in center field, Braves’ batter Terry Pendleton makes an out for passing Reggie Sanders, who is tagged on the foot by third basemen Kelly Gruber trying to return second, with a video clearly showing Atlanta made the third out, but umpire Bob Davidson sees it differently.
1993 Calling balls and strikes during Game 4 at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium, Charlie Williams becomes the first black umpire to work home plate during a World Series. The game becomes memorable as the Blue Jays win the 15-14 marathon, which takes a record four hours and 14 minutes to complete.
1994 Receiving all 28 first-place votes, Raul Mondesi (.306, 16, 56) is named the National League’s Rookie of the Year. The Los Angeles right fielder, who easily outdistanced Astros’ hurler John Hudek and Braves’ outfielder Ryan Klesko, is the third consecutive Dodger to win the award.
1996 Andruw Jones becomes the fourth rookie in baseball history to hit two home runs in the same World Series game when he goes deep twice in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium. The Braves’ center fielder joins Charlie Keller (1939 – Yankees), Tony Kubek (1957 – Yankees), and Willie McGee (1982 – Cardinals) in accomplishing the feat.
2000 Major League play-by-play broadcasters and color commentators select Carlos Delgado and Todd Helton as the recipients of the Hank Aaron Award. The honor recognizes the Blue Jays and Rockies’ first basemen as the best overall hitters in each league.
2000 The Blue Jays and Carlos Delgado agree to a record four-year $68 million contract. The Toronto first baseman’s average salary of $17 million is the richest in major league history.
2002 Twenty-year-old Venezuelan right-hander Francisco Rodriguez becomes the youngest pitcher to win a World Series game. With just 15 days of major league experience, K-Rod throws 37 pitches, retiring nine consecutive batters in three innings to pick up the victory when the Angels outslug the Giants in Game 2 of the Fall Classic, 11-10.
2004 After dropping the first three decisions, the Red Sox win their fourth consecutive ALCS game to win the American League pennant, beating the Yankees in the Bronx, 10-3. Johnny Damon’s two home runs, including a grand slam and Derek Lowe’s solid pitching performance, helped Boston join the 1942 Maple Leafs and the 1975 Islanders as the only teams in the history of professional sports to overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win a seven-game series.
2008 The Cubs and Jim Hendry agreed to a four-year contract extension. The deal, which will expire in 2012 and extend into the club’s new ownership tenure, is the general manager’s reward for the team’s best regular-season showing in more than sixty years en route to its second consecutive National League Central title.
2008 Two storied franchises, the NFL Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees, form a partnership to handle concession and merchandise sales at the clubs’ new stadiums. Legends Hospitality Management, LLC, founded in cooperation with Goldman Sachs and CIC Partners, envisions expanding its services to other professional franchises and college programs.
2009 The Brewers hire Rick Peterson as their pitching coach to improve the club’s woeful starting pitching, which posted a 5.37 ERA last season. The 54-year-old pitching guru, known for his focus on motion analysis, is reunited with bench coach Willie Randolph and skipper Ken Macha, his former managers with the Mets and the A’s, teams he toiled for in a similar role.
2010 Ted Lilly signs a three-year, $33 million deal to remain with the Dodgers. The 34-year-old southpaw, obtained from the Cubs in early August, compiled a 7-4 record with a 3.52 ERA in 12 starts for LA, including victories in the first five starts for his new team.
2012 The Red Sox select John Farrell as their new manager to replace the fired Bobby Valentine, who let go the day after the season ended after piloting the club to a last-place finish in his only year in the Boston dugout. The team’s new skipper, who spent the previous two seasons managing the Blue Jays, is obtained from Toronto by sending infielder Mike Aviles north of the border as compensation for the opportunity to hire their former pitching coach.
2012 After agreeing to pay $8 million of the remaining $21 million owed to Heath Bell, the Marlins deal their disappointing closer to the Diamondbacks in a three-team trade in which Miami obtains 22-year-old minor league shortstop Yordy Cabrera, acquired by Arizona along with Cliff Pennington from the A’s for outfielder Chris Young. The D-Backs, who picked his $6.5 million option earlier in the day, plan to use the 35-year-old right-handed reliever to set up closer J. J. Putz.
2015 Tying a major league record set by Astro outfielder Carlos Beltrán in 2004, Daniel Murphy goes deep in his fifth consecutive postseason game. The Mets second baseman’s two-out third-inning solo shot off Kyle Hendricks contributes to the team’s 5-2 victory in Game 3 NLCS victory at Wrigley Field.
2020 Rays’ skipper Kevin Cash becomes the first to play in the Little League World Series and manage a major league team in the Fall Classic. Playing for Tampa’s Northside team, the former big-league catcher went 2-for-7, with a double and two runs scored in the 1989 Williamsport tournament.
