TOP 25 ROUNDUP: NO. 4 OHIO STATE HOLDS OFF NO. 3 PENN STATE

A goal-line stand late in the game helped No. 4 Ohio State record a 20-13 win over No. 3 Penn State on Saturday afternoon in State College, Pa.

The Buckeyes (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) have defeated the Nittany Lions (7-1, 4-1) eight straight times since 2016.

Trailing 20-13, Penn State had a first-and-goal from the 3. Three runs produced only two yards, however, and a pass intended to Khalil Dinkins was incomplete with 5:13 left in the game.

The Buckeyes ran out the clock with quarterback Will Howard, a Pennsylvania native, rushing for seven yards on a third-and-3 from the Penn State 47 with 30 seconds left. He took a knee to end the game. Ohio State (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) has defeated the Nittany Lions (7-1, 4-1) eight straight times since 2016.

Howard was 16 of 24 for 182 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while Quinshon Judkins ran for 95 yards. Penn State’s Drew Allar was 12 of 20 for 146 yards and an interception.

No. 1 Oregon 38, Michigan 17

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for a touchdown and ran for another and Jordan James rushed for a touchdown as part of his 117 yards, leading the Ducks over the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Noah Whittington added two rushing touchdowns for the Ducks (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten), as Oregon built an 18-point lead at halftime and remained in control in the second half. The Ducks lost top wide receiver Tez Johnson to an upper-body injury early in the game, and a fumble on special teams led to Michigan’s first touchdown. But Oregon overcame those and dominated on both sides of the ball.

Davis Warren was 13-of-23 for 165 yards with two touchdown passes for Michigan (5-4, 3-3). His 6-yard touchdown pass to Peyton O’Leary on third-and-goal midway through the third quarter made it 28-17.

No 2 Georgia 34, Florida 20

Carson Beck completed 25 of 40 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing three interceptions as the Bulldogs beat the Gators in Jacksonville, Fla.

Nate Frazier ran for a team-high 82 yards and a touchdown, while Dominic Lovett caught seven passes for 52 yards and a score, as the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 SEC) won their fourth straight.

Florida (4-4, 2-3) lost quarterback DJ Lagway to a hamstring injury in the second quarter. Lagway completed 2 of 6 passes for 47 yards and a score before backup Aidan Warner came in, completing 7 of 22 passes for 66 yards and an interception. Ja’Kobi Jackson led the Gators with 12 carries for 74 yards and a score.

No. 5 Miami 53, Duke 31

Cam Ward passed for 400 yards and five touchdowns as the fifth-ranked Hurricanes remained undefeated, rallying to beat the visiting Blue Devils in an ACC matchup in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Hurricanes, who entered the game ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring average (46.8), exceeded that total as they rallied from an 11-point third-quarter deficit. Hurricanes wide receiver Xavier Restrepo had eight catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns. On his third TD, he broke Miami’s career record for catches and receiving yards.

Miami (9-0, 5-0 ACC) got the best of Duke coach Manny Diaz, who spent six years with the Hurricanes, including three as their head coach. Duke (6-3, 2-3) was led by running back Peyton Jones, who scored one rushing touchdown and one receiving TD in totaling 132 yards from scrimmage (71 rushing, 61 receiving.

No. 7 Tennessee 28, Kentucky 18

Dylan Sampson ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns, setting Tennessee’s single-season mark for rushing scores, to help the Volunteers beat the Wildcats in Knoxville, Tenn.

Nico Iamaleava completed 28 of 38 passes for 292 yards and one touchdown as the Volunteers (7-1, 4-1 SEC) won their third straight game. Miles Kitselman caught six passes for 97 yards and a touchdown and Peyton Lewis added a rushing score. Sampson, who finished with 27 carries, established the mark with his 19th rushing touchdown of the season with 4:55 left in the game.

The Wildcats (3-6, 1-6) lost their fourth straight game. Kentucky’s Brock Vandagriff completed 10 of 17 passes for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception before leaving in the third quarter. He was injured while being sacked. Jamarion Wilcox rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries for the Wildcats.

South Carolina 44, No. 10 Texas A&M 20

Raheim Sanders rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 92 yards on five receptions in Columbia, S.C., as the Gamecocks handed the Longhorns their first Southeastern Conference loss.

Sanders snapped a 20-20 tie with 9:19 left in the third quarter, zipping 52 yards as the Gamecocks (5-3, 3-3) went ahead for good. Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers added the clinching touchdown on a short pass to tight end Joshua Simon, who ran 57 yards, with 3:24 remaining in the game. Sellers completed 13 of 27 passes for 244 yards and two scores while adding 106 yards and a touchdown on 15 rushes.

Marcel Reed threw for 206 yards on 18-of-28 passing with a touchdown and an interception for the Aggies (7-2, 5-1), who had a seven-game win streak snapped.

Texas Tech 23, No. 11 Iowa State 22

The Red Raiders defeated the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa, after a fourth-quarter comeback orchestrated by quarterback Behren Morton.

Tahj Brooks crossed the goal line on the game-winning touchdown for Texas Tech (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) with 19 seconds remaining to cap a 12-play, 71-yard drive. With Morton lined up as a receiver on second-and-goal, Brooks caught a direct snap and ran into the right side of the end zone.

Iowa State (7-1, 4-1), undefeated and averaging 25.1 penalty yards per game entering the day, was dealt its first loss, committing eight penalties for 59 yards in the process.

Louisville 33, No. 11 Clemson 21

Isaac Brown rushed for 151 yards, including a game-sealing 45-yard touchdown burst with 5:50 to play, as the Cardinals went to Clemson and stunned the Tigers.

Tyler Shough threw for 156 yards for Louisville (6-3, 4-2 ACC). Shough and Keyjuan Brown had touchdown runs in the first half.

Phil Mafah rushed 30 times for 171 yards for Clemson (6-2, 5-1), which outgained the visitors 450-366 in total yards and dominated in time of possession 37:52 to 22:08.

No. 13 Indiana 47, Michigan State 10

Kurtis Rourke went 19-of-29 passing for 263 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Hoosiers over the Spartans in the Big Ten matchup in East Lansing, Mich.

Rourke returned after missing last week’s win over Washington with a thumb injury and helped keep hopes of a Big Ten title and College Football Playoff berth alive for Indiana (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten). Indiana also reclaimed the Old Brass Spittoon, the trophy that’s at stake when these teams face each other.

Aidan Chiles went 16-of-24 passing for 193 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Michigan State (4-5, 2-4). Michigan State led 10-0 after the first quarter but then couldn’t stop Indiana’s run of 47 unanswered points.

Houston 24, No. 17 Kansas State 19

Zeon Chriss scored a 41-yard touchdown run with 2:31 left to lift the Cougars to an upset of the Wildcats in a driving rainstorm in Houston.

Avery Johnson finished 23-of-39 for 238 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Wildcats (7-2, 4-2 Big 12).

Chriss was a perfect 11-of-11 for the Cougars (4-5, 3-3 Big 12) while also running for 75 yards and the winning score.

No. 20 SMU 48, No. 18 Pittsburgh 25

Kevin Jennings threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs crushed the Panthers in Dallas.

Jennings completed 17 of 25 passes as SMU (8-1, 5-0 ACC) joined No. 5 Miami atop the conference standings while handing Pittsburgh (7-1, 3-1) its first defeat. The result was never in doubt after SMU scored 24 points in the second quarter to take a 31-3 halftime lead.

Eli Holstein hit 29 of 47 attempts for 248 yards with an interception for Pittsburgh, which could fall out of the Top 25 after the lopsided loss. The Panthers yielded a season-high 467 yards, turned it over twice and committed six penalties for 66 yards.

The Jazz, who remain the only winless team in the NBA, had six players score in double figures, led by Walker Kessler’s 18 points to go with 14 rebounds. Johnny Juzang had 17 points and Keyonte George had 16 with eight assists.

SIXERS STAR JOEL EMBIID SHOVES REPORTER

Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid got into a verbal altercation with a local reporter that turned physical after the team’s 124-107 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

The incident happened in the Sixers’ locker room, where Embiid confronted Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes about an article that made reference to Embiid’s son and late brother. The piece also criticized the seven-time All-Star’s ability to stay healthy and act professionally.

“The next time you bring up my dead brother and my son again, you are going to see what I’m going to do to you and I’m going to have to … live with the consequences,” Embiid told Hayes as reporters filtered into the locker room.

Embiid continued with some profane language before rejecting an attempted apology from Hayes. After Embiid said that he didn’t care what reporters had to say, Hayes said, “But you do,” prompting Embiid to raise his voice and push Hayes on the shoulder.

A public relations official for the 76ers then got in between the two while another staff member tried to get reporters out of the locker room.

Team security asked reporters not to report on the altercation, at which point Embiid delivered another message.

“They can do whatever they want,” he said. “I don’t give a (expletive).”

The league has already said that it is conducting an investigation into the matter.

“We are aware of reports of an incident in the Sixers locker room this evening and are commencing an investigation,” a spokesman for the NBA said in a statement.

Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey told ESPN that he too is aware of the situation.

“We take the situation very seriously and are investigating, and have already spoken to the NBA,” Morey said in a statement.

Embiid, 30, has yet to play in a game this season because of left knee injury management. He was limited to just 39 games (all starts) in 2023-24.

In those 39 games, Embiid averaged 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.7 blocks.

Embiid is only two seasons removed from being named MVP, earning that title by posting averages of 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.7 blocks in 66 games (all starts) during the 2022-23 campaign.

Philadelphia is off to a 1-4 start this season.

INDIANA FOOTBALL

HOOSIERS RECLAIM OLD BRASS SPITTOON

EAST LANSING, Mich. –  In every sport, it’s what happens after you get knocked down that matters most.

Case in point — unbeaten Indiana took an early 10-0 hit at Michigan State, the first time it had trailed all season, then came back with 21-straight, second-quarter points, 12 more in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth en route to a 47-10 win on Saturday to reclaim the Old Brass Spittoon.

The No. 13 Hoosiers (9-0) ratcheted up the offense (quarterback Kurtis Rourke was back and rocking it with 263 passing yards and four touchdown passes), defense (defensive lineman Mikail Kamara had 4.5 of IU’s season-high 15 tackles for loss; defensive back Amare Ferrell had two interceptions; the Hoosiers had seven sacks and held Michigan State to minus-36 rushing yards) and special teams (a third-quarter blocked punt led to a safety) to deliver a program-record, ninth-straight victory.

Head coach Curt Cignetti praised the Hoosiers’ relentlessness, discipline, and poise. He emphasized they are never satisfied. Not now. Not with so much more to play for.

“I give the staff and players great credit,” Cignetti told Voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer during the post-game radio show. “We play as a team. We play disciplined. We play hard. We execute. We spread the ball around. We have a lot of guys who can make plays.”

Up next is a home game against Michigan (5-4), then a bye, then a trip to No. 4 Ohio State (7-1), then a regular-season-ending home game against Purdue (1-7).

“We have to finish strong,” Rourke told Fischer in the post-game radio show.

No team in program history — not the 1945 Big Ten title squad, not the 1967 conference co-championship team – had gone 9-0 or won nine-straight games until this group did it, with more to come.

“This is awesome,” Rourke told Fischer. “We had visions of this in the offseason. We knew we’d have to put it together every Saturday. Credit to the guys in how they’ve stayed humble and consistent. We’re excited to keep it rolling.”

Rourke bounced back strong after missing last week’s Washington victory because of a thumb injury suffered the previous week against Nebraska. He wore a special glove to protect his thumb.

“It’s been a crazy two weeks,” Rourke told Fischer in the post-game radio show. “I had great help around me. The doctors and training staff were fantastic. The training staff put in the hours to bring down the swelling so I could throw. I’m honored and blessed to be able to play.”

Rourke was 19-for-29 for 66 percent, about eight percent below his season average.

“There were a couple of throws I’d like back, but I was happy to be out there,” he told Fischer. “Throwing with the glove was new for me. I’m getting used to it. There were some ups and downs. I knew I could do it.”

Added Cignetti: “I can’t give (Rourke) enough credit as far as what he means to our team and the kind of person he is. He’s such a competitor.”

Indiana remains tied with No. 1 Oregon for first place in the Big Ten. Both are 6-0 with three games remaining.

This was the seventh time IU has scored at least 40 points, another program record. It continues to lead the Big Ten with an average victory margin of more than 32 points. No opponent has come closer than 14 points.

“(The Spartans) had a tough time responding once we got on a roll,” Cignetti told Fischer. “Our defensive line dominated.”

Receiver Ke’Shawn Williams led IU with six catches for 86 yards. Receiver Elijah Sarratt had four for 59 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Kamara had 2.5 of the Hoosiers’ seven sacks. He leads the Big Ten with 9.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss.

“He was in the backfield all night long,” Cignetti told Fischer. “He’s a good player. He came up big when we needed him.”

IU didn’t waste time in testing Rourke’s surgically repaired thumb with a game-opening pass good for nine yards.

Then he missed his next three passes as Michigan State (4-5, 2-4) took brief charge. Indiana’s stretch of not trailing or allowing a first-quarter point ended on Michigan State’s first possession, with a 47-yard Spartan field goal. It added a touchdown on its second possession for a 10-0 lead.

The Hoosiers came back with Rourke’s 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zach Horton to cut the lead to three one minute into the second quarter. Rourke was 4-for-4 on the drive.

IU got the ball back when Ferrell intercepted after linebacker Aiden Fisher tipped a pass. Indiana couldn’t take advantage on that possession but did the one after via running back Ty Son Lawton’s 1-yard touchdown run for a 14-10 lead. It was set up buy by a 38-yard pass to Williams.

Ferrell’s second interception set up Rourke’s 4-yard scoring pass to Sarratt for a 21- 10 halftime lead.

IU blocked a punt and forced a safety on Michigan State’s opening possession of the third quarter, then followed with Rourke’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Myles Rice, and then a 29-yard Nicolas Radicic field goal for a 33-10 score.

In the fourth quarter, receiver Omar Cooper Jr. had a 16-yard TD run. Sarratt caught his second scoring pass. The Hoosiers led 47-10 and went to its power running game to close out the victory.

“I liked the way we responded against a good team,” Rourke told Fischer. “We were able to take back control of the game.”

Added Cignetti: “We were pretty dominant. It’s a good road win.”

PURDUE FOOTBALL

BOILERS DROP OVERTIME NAIL-BITER TO NORTHWESTERN

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In a hard-fought one-score affair, the Purdue football team came up short in overtime against Northwestern on Saturday afternoon at Ross-Ade Stadium.

In the 26-20 defeat, the Boilermakers (1-7, 0-5 B1G) came back to tie the game from a deficit that was as large as 17-3 until the final 30 seconds of the first half.

Quarterbacks Hudson Card and Ryan Browne each took snaps, but Card was fed the lion’s share in his first game back since suffering an injury at Wisconsin on October 5.

The senior from Austin, Texas, returned in a big way, completing 21-of-37 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown. Card spread the ball around well, connecting with eight different players through the air.

The receiving corps was led by trusty tight end Max Klare, who has now paced the Boilermaker receivers in six of the eight games this season. The sophomore standout caught a season-high six passes for 78 yards.

Devin Mockobee scored his third touchdown of the season, a tough one-yard run in the fourth quarter, and finished with 29 yards on 10 carries to lead Purdue on the ground.

Dillon Thieneman maintained his disruptive persona all around the field, leading the team with nine tackles (six solos) and a pass breakup.

Antonio Stevens nabbed his first career interception on a pass from Northwestern quarterback Ryan Hilinski in the second quarter and ultimately finished with seven tackles (five solos).

In his Purdue debut, sophomore receiver CJ Smith added another weapon to Card’s arsenal and posted a solid four catches for 55 yards.

Trailing 17-3, Card tossed a six-yard dot to Jahmal Edrine 25 seconds before the break, cutting the deficit in half. Edrine logged a season-high five catches for 54 yards, including his second score as a Boilermaker.

After halftime, the Purdue defense stepped up and allowed just three points for the rest of regulation.

After a 24-yard Spencer Porath field goal cut Northwestern’s lead to 17-13 near the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats (4-5, 2-4 B1G) answered with a field goal of their own.

Down 20-13 in the fourth quarter, the offense registered an 11-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game. Mockobee muscled his way through a pile of four Wildcat defenders, carrying multiple players on his back for a one-yard touchdown.

With the score tied 20-20 in overtime, Purdue took the ball first and opted to be aggressive, going for it on 4th-and-5 at the Wildcats’ 20-yard line. Card’s pass fell incomplete, turning it over to Northwestern.

The Wildcats punctuated the game with a walk-off touchdown pass, ending a promising Purdue rally.

UP NEXT

The Boilermakers’ difficult schedule continues with a road trip at No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday, Nov. 9. The kickoff time and broadcasting information have yet to be announced by the Big Ten Conference and its television partners.

Adam Sturtz led Butler with seven tackles and Onye Onuoha played great with five tackles and a sack. Butler’s other sack was a drive-killer by Jack Burch.

SYCAMORES TAKE DOWN NO. 15 NORTH DAKOTA, 35-31; IMPROVE TO 3-2 IN MVFC PLAY

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Plez Lawrence scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:20 left in the third quarter and Joey Shew, Geoffrey Brown, Maddix Blackwell, and the Indiana State defense made the score stand up in the second half as the Sycamores took down No. 15/15 North Dakota, 35-31, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Lawrence broke through with a pair of third quarter touchdowns to give Indiana State (4-5, 3-2) the lead in the second half. The redshirt sophomore running back broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown run on Indiana State’s first drive of the second half, and then followed up going 39 yards on a short pass from Elijah Owens to put the Sycamores ahead 35-28 with 5:20 to play in the third quarter.

The Sycamore defense made the seven-point lead hold up against the Fighting Hawks (5-4, 2-3) as Indiana State held UND to a 37-yard CJ Elrichs’ field goal early in the fourth quarter to cut it to a four-point game with 14:56 to play in the contest.

Indiana State’s two offensive drives in the fourth quarter led to punts with Sycamore punter Harry Traum pinning UND at both the 12 and 15 yard-lines forcing the Fighting Hawks to go the length of the field in attempt to put the go-ahead points on the board.

UND’s final drive of the game started with 1:49 remaining in the contest as quarterback Simon Romfo’s connected on passes to Bo Belquist, Caden Dennis, and Nate DeMontagnac in moving the ball up to the Indiana State 35. However, Indiana State defensive end Joey Shew wreaked havoc on the line of scrimmage on the 3rd-and-9 play picking up his second sack of the game forcing a long fourth down with just over 20 seconds to play.

Romfo’s jump ball into the end zone settled into the hands of Blackwell around the goal-line and the Sycamore safety batted the ball down to the ground with 14 seconds remaining on the clock setting up the Indiana State kneel down to secure the win.

Indiana State’s 35-31 win over North Dakota marked the Sycamores’ first win against a ranked opponent since Indiana State topped No. 22 Illinois State, 28-23, back on Nov. 10, 2018. The Sycamores’ last win against a top-15 ranked opponent came back on Sept. 24, 2016, when Indiana State topped No. 9 Illinois State, 34-31, at Memorial Stadium.

Shew started the scoring for the Sycamores with a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown 34 seconds into the game setting the tone for a high-scoring affair on Saturday afternoon. Shen Butler-Lawson added a three-yard touchdown run for Indiana State, while Rashad Rochelle hauled in a 16-yard touchdown catch for the Sycamore as the teams went into the halftime break tied up at 21-21.

Lawrence was dominant from the start for Indiana State as the redshirt sophomore finished with a combined 139 yards on 15 offensive touches on Saturday afternoon. He posted 14 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown, while adding one catch for 39 yards and a second score. Shen Butler-Lawson added 13 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Elijah Owens contributed 38 rushing yards as the Sycamores racked up 227 yards on the ground. Left tackle Jude McCoskey added to the efforts hauling in a backwards pass and rumbling over the goal line to convert a two-point conversion in the third quarter.

Owens went 12-of-18 through the air for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Rashad Rochelle was the primary target hauling in six catches for 72 yards and a score, while Zavion Taylor added three receptions for 38 yards. Rochelle added a two-point conversion pass to Ethan Chambers as the Sycamores utilized the entire playbook on Saturday afternoon.

Shew was all over the backfield on Saturday afternoon to highlight multiple impressive efforts on the defensive end. The Sycamore defensive end posted six tackles, 3.0 TFLs, 2.0 sacks, a forced fumble, and he also scored Indiana State’s first points of the game courtesy of a 20-yard pick-six in a standout effort.

Brown was also around the ball a majority of the afternoon in recording a career-high 19 tackles on the afternoon. The 19 stops give him 305 career tackles at Indiana State making him just the 19th player in program history to eclipse the 300-career tackle mark.

Blackwell added 14 tackles and two pass breakups, while Kaleal Davis posted 11 tackles in the win.

Romfo went 18-of-26 through the air for 187 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Fighting Hawks. Nick Kupfer had a team-high 56 receiving yards, while Bo Belquist and Nate DeMontagnac both had receiving touchdowns for UND.

Isaiah Smith paced UND’s rushing efforts with a game-high 104 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Sawyer Seidl added 11 carries for 33 yards on the ground as the Fighting Hawks posted 185 total rushing yards on Saturday afternoon.

Malachi McNeal and Wyatt Pedigo had eight tackles apiece to lead North Dakota’s defense in the game. McNeal added 2.0 tackles-for-loss and a sack, while Craig Orlando and Kaden Vig combined for a sack in the loss.

How They Scored

Lucas McAllister’s pressure up the middle led to an errant Simon Romfo pass and Joey Shew took advantage with a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown 34 seconds into the game to give Indiana State the 6-0 lead. The ensuing two-point conversion failed leaving it a six-point Indiana State advantage.

Romfo gave UND the 7-6 lead with 10:03 left in the first quarter as the quarterback punched in a two-yard gain to cap an eight-play, 65-yard drive.

The Sycamores responded with an 11-play, 87-yard drive, that spanned the end of the first and start of the second quarters. Rashad Rochelle highlighted the drive with a 22-yard reception into the UND red zone and Shen Butler-Lawson took it the rest of the way with a three-yard touchdown run to give Indiana State the 13-7 lead with 11:30 to play in the first half.

The Fighting Hawks answered back as Nate DeMontagnac hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Romfo with 6:38 left on the clock following the 10-play, 67-yard drive.

Bo Belquist added to North Dakota’s lead with just under two minutes left in the first half bringing in a nine-yard Romfo touchdown pass to make it 21-13 Fighting Hawks after a seven-play, 47-yard drive.

A muffed punt return late in the second quarter set up short yardage for the Indiana State offense and the Sycamores capitalized as Elijah Owens found Rochelle for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds left in the half. Rochelle rolled out and found fellow wide receiver Ethan Chambers open in the end zone for the two-point conversion to tie the game up at 21-21 at the halftime break.

Indiana State’s opening drive of the second half ended with Plez Lawrence’s first touchdown of the day as the running back sprinted 53 yards down the right sideline to give Indiana State the 27-21 lead with 12:21 to play in the third quarter.

Isaiah Smith answered for UND as the Fighting Hawks’ running back pushed through for a 3-yard touchdown and 28-27 lead over the Sycamores with 8:13 left in the third quarter after an eight-play, 69-yard drive.

Owens found Lawrence in the passing game and the Sycamore duo connected for a 39-yard touchdown pass, capping off a six-play, 71-yard drive. The two-point conversion featured a throwback to left tackle Jude McCoskey and the Sycamore offensive lineman took the ball over the goal line to make it a 35-28 lead with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter.

North Dakota’s final scoring drive ended early in the fourth quarter as CJ Elrichs converted a 37-yard field goal with 14:56 to play to cap the scoring at 35-31.

GREYHOUNDS EXPLODE FOR 58 POINTS IN IMPRESSIVE HOME WIN

INDIANAPOLIS – The 19th-ranked UIndy football team put on an impressive display Saturday night, downing visiting Southwest Baptist, 58-3, under the lights at Key Stadium. The Greyhounds compiled season highs in points and rushing yards while keeping the visiting Bearcats out of the end zone the entire night.

INS & OUTS

UIndy used a 24-point second quarter to catapult itself comfortably in front. A big first half from RB1 Jon Lewis provided the fuel, as the senior captain racked up 172 rushing yards on just 12 first-half carries.

Freshman Key Crowell also provided an early spark, as his 40-yard pick-six in the second quarter helped grow the margin.

The lead ballooned to 34 points before the Bearcats finally spoiled the shutout. Their 37-yard field goal midway through the third quarter got them on the board but ultimately proved to be their only points of the evening.

The Hounds responded with a touchdown on their very next drive, stamping out any and all Bearcat momentum. The possession was capped by a trick play that saw wideout Alonzo Derrick throw a touchdown pass to QB Gavin Sukup.

Another crowd pleaser came moments later when Anthony Crowell earned his first career punt return TD, taking it 44 yards to the house.

The end of the third quarter and the whole of the fourth offered the UIndy reserves an opportunity to shine. A number of Hounds notched career firsts, including Mooresville, Ind., native Brian Houk (20-yard FG), freshman Grey Hostler (three-yard sack), and Kokomom, Ind., product Cole Cardwell (10-yard TD run).

INSIDE THE BOX

– Lewis finished with 198 rushing yards and a touchdown. He broke off a season-long 76-yard run in the second quarter, helping up his average to 11.2 yards-per-carry for the game.

– Senior defensive end Aaron Barnett racked up three sacks, matching a career high.

MARIAN FOOTBALL

KNIGHTS TAME COUGARS IN 31-20 ROAD VICTORY

Oak Lawn, Ill. – Playing on the road at Saint Xavier for the first time since 2017, the Marian football team rebounded from their loss last week with a 31-20 road win. The win is Marian’s first against the Cougars in Illinois since the 2015 season, and improves Marian to 6-2 on the season and 2-1 in the MSFA Midwest League.

The Knights opened Saturday’s game as great as one could ask, getting an immediate lift by the defense as they forced a quick three-and-out. The offense raced to the end zone on their first possession of the day as a 41-yard completion between Tristan Polk and Jake Reichard ignited the unit, with the drive ending in a one-yard touchdown run by the quarterback. Both teams punted on their next possessions, and on the Cougars third series of the game they rolled the dice with a fourth down attempt, only to get denied in the backfield by Isaiah Street and Wyatt Woodall.

Marian used the momentum from the turnover on downs and found the end zone on their short field, marching the 36 yards in 12 plays with Keagan La Belle capping the drive with a touchdown run. La Belle’s 10th touchdown run of the season gave Marian a 14-0 lead which they carried into the second quarter. The defense continued to play sound as the next period began, forcing Saint Xavier off the field without points as they turned the ball over on downs on their first series of the quarter. A series of punts brought the Knights’ offense back to the field with 8:11 to play in the half, but the series would end in a missed field goal attempt as Marlon Pomili’s 52-yard kick was left short.

Penalties aided the Cougars as they took over at their 35-yard line following the miss, as they used just 72 seconds and four plays to reach the end zone and cut the lead in half. Marian responded after giving up the score, as Polk dissected the defense with completions to Tirae Spence, Drew Byerly, and Jameson Coverstone to get into the red zone. La Belle would cap the 61-yard drive with a touchdown run from two yards out, pushing Marian on top 21-7. The Cougars would turn the ball over on downs one more time before halftime, but Marian was unable to add to the lead as Polk had a hail mary pass intercepted on the half’s final play.

Leading 21-7 to start the second half, Marian looked in prime position to take a commanding three-score lead as Polk and Coverstone connected for 38 yards on the first play of the third quarter, but the series would stall out six plays later on a failed field goal operation. Marian’s defense stood tall for the offense by forcing a quick four-and-out, and two snaps later the offense pushed the lead to three scores as Polk found Coverstone for a 25-yard touchdown connection.

Mishaps began to plague Marian after they grabbed the 28-7 lead, as moments after the defense forced a fumble, a high snap on a punt forced Mason Miller to attempt to pick up a first down run on his own, but the punter was tackled in the backfield at the Knights own 13 yard line. Saint Xavier wasted no time scoring as Jessi Plunkett dashed in for a 13-yard score, but the extra point would be blocked by Dan Marley as Marian maintained a 15-point lead.

Marian’s offense would punt on their next two series while the defense was tasked to hold the lead, forcing a turnover on downs before the start of the fourth quarter as Isaiah Street and Deon Pettiford wrecked plays in the backfield. After the Knights punted to start the fourth quarter, the Cougars would march down the field and score to make the contest an eight-point game, as Julian Smith’s score made it a 28-20 game.

The Knights would take over with 9:09 to play in the game, and put the ball in the belly of Keagan La Belle, as the junior running back drove the team into field goal range for Kenny Curry, who converted a 34-yard kick to push the lead to 11 points. Trailing by two scores, the Cougars would take over with 4:47 to play, but were only able to move the ball 24 yards on the series, as four sacks on a 15-play drive sealed the game, as the Saint Xavier desperation heave on 4th and 25 from their own 36 hit the ground. Polk would kneel out the clock after the defense stood tall one final time, closing the 31-20 victory over Saint Xavier.

Marian’s defense limited the Saint Xavier offense to 284 yards on the day, while the Knights’ offense gained 288 yards in the win. Polk passed for 196 yards and a touchdown, while running for 11 yards and one touchdown. La Belle gained 84 yards and scored twice on his 24 carries, and Jameson Coverstone led the receivers with 86 yards and his first collegiate score. Reichard had 52 yards, and Drew Byerly had a team-high four catches. Defensively, Cade Houseman was all over the field, leading the team in tackles with 16 total stops, including three for a loss and a forced fumble. Isaiah Street made 10 tackles and had 3.5 sacks on the afternoon, making 5.5 total tackles for loss. Deon Pettiford, Logan Carrington, and Wyatt Woodall each made eight tackles in the win, and Pettiford, Houseman, Joe Apata, Luke Swartz, Kobe Ottinger, and Woodall joined Street as sack makers on Saturday.

Marian will return home next Saturday for their final home game of the season, taking on Judson University at 1:05 p.m. Next Saturday’s game is senior day, with pregame festivities for the Marian seniors taking place approximately 30 minutes prior to kickoff.

FOOTBALL HISTORY

The 1st to Create Pads

November 3, 1877 – Princeton’s L.P. Smock introduces wearing padding to the game of football when he and his team faced Harvard. Smock sewed padding made mostly of cotton into his uniform jersey and pants for this game. The rules in that contest more closely resembled rugby than our modern American Football but it  was a rough sport nonetheless. Per the source of sportsrec.com Smock’s pads were thin quilted layers sewn to the shoulders, thighs and knees of the laced-up jersey and knee pants he designed as the first football uniform for Princeton’s players. The pads were not very heavy, and they also did not provide much protection.
