TOP 25 ROUNDUP: BYU THRASHES NO. 23 KANSAS BY 34

Richie Saunders scored a game-high 22 points and BYU led for all but 26 seconds of a 91-57 blowout of No. 23 Kansas on Tuesday in Provo, Utah.

The margin of defeat matched the largest for Kansas in 22 years under coach Bill Self, who said, “I thought we were awful, and I thought (the Cougars) were great. They made everything they looked at and then any mistake that we made they made us pay.”

Trevin Knell added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (18-8, 9-6 Big 12), who sank 14 of 36 3-point attempts and shot 51.5 percent from the field.

Hunter Dickinson scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for the Jayhawks (17-9, 8-7), who have lost four of their past six games.

No. 2 Florida 85, Oklahoma 63

Walter Clayton Jr. scored 18 points and Will Richard contributed 14 points and eight rebounds as the Gators overwhelmed the Sooners in Gainesville, Fla.

Alijah Martin tallied 14 points and Urban Klavzar added 10 points as the Gators (23-3, 10-3 Southeastern Conference) won their fifth straight game. Led by Martin and Klavzar, Florida’s bench outscored Oklahoma’s 28-14.

Jeremiah Fears produced 22 points and five rebounds to lead the Sooners (16-10, 3-10), who have lost five straight games and 10 of their past 13 after a 13-0 start.

No. 5 Houston 80, Arizona State 65

L.J. Cryer recorded 18 points and six assists and Emanuel Sharp added 17 points to help the Cougars cruise to a victory over the Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz., setting the Big 12 record for consecutive road wins.

Mylik Wilson had 12 points and seven rebounds and J’Wan Roberts had 10 points as the Cougars (22-4, 14-1 Big 12) won their fifth straight game and 12th straight on the road in Big 12 play.

Alston Mason scored a season-high 26 points on 8-of-9 shooting and B.J. Freeman added 17 points for the Sun Devils (12-14, 3-12), who lost their sixth consecutive game. Arizona State’s Jayden Quaintance (ankle) returned from a two-game absence but played just 13 minutes and didn’t score.

No. 21 Mississippi State 70, No. 7 Texas A&M 54

Josh Hubbard scored 25 points and Claudell Harris Jr. added 15, hitting three second-half 3-pointers, as the Bulldogs held off the Aggies in Starkville, Miss.

A Hubbard 3-pointer with 2:32 to play stoked Mississippi State’s lead to 15 points. Shawn Jones Jr. canned another trey on the Bulldogs’ ensuing possession, and Mississippi State (19-7, 7-6 SEC) strolled to the finish line for its second straight win against a Top 25 team.

Zhuric Phelps led Texas A&M with 13 points while CJ Wilcher and Wade Taylor IV added 11 points apiece for the Aggies (20-6, 9-4), who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

No. 8 Iowa State 79, Colorado 65

Dishon Jackson and Milan Momcilovic scored 13 points apiece and the Cyclones relied on a balanced attack to post a win over the Buffaloes in Ames, Iowa.

Joshua Jefferson and Tamin Lipsey added 12 points apiece for Iowa State (21-5, 11-4 Big 12), which won its fourth game in a row.

Bangot Dak scored 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting to lead Colorado (10-16, 1-14). Harrison Carrington finished with 11 points off the bench, and Andrej Jakimovski scored 10 points.

TCU 69, No. 9 Texas Tech 66

Noah Reynolds and reserve Trazarien White each scored 16 points and the Horned Frogs held the Red Raiders to one field goal in the final 4:56, pulling off an upset in Fort Worth, Texas.

Reynolds scored the last seven points for TCU (15-11, 8-7 Big 12). He hit a foul shot with four seconds remaining, and TCU’s David Punch blocked JT Toppin’s 3-point attempt with one second on the clock to seal the victory.

Ernest Udeh Jr. added 11 points and 10 rebounds for TCU. Darrion Williams scored a game-high 21 points for Texas Tech (20-6, 11-4), while Chance McMillian added 19 points and Toppin chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Kam Jones scored 14 points and Chase Ross added 11, fueling the Golden Eagles to a convincing win over the Pirates in Milwaukee.

Ben Gold scored all 10 of his points in the second half for Marquette (20-6, 11-4 Big East), which shot a robust 53.6 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from 3-point range to improve to 13-2 at home this season. The Golden Eagles recorded their second win in a row following a three-game skid.

GUERRERO PLANS TO BECOME FREE AGENT AFTER SEASON, FAILS TO REACH LONG-TERM DEAL WITH BLUE JAYS

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. plans to become a free agent after the season following the passing of his deadline Tuesday to reach a long-term agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays.

“The last couple days, the front office, my lawyers, my agents, they met, both (sides) tried but obviously we couldn’t get an agreement,” Guerrero said through interpreter Hector Lebron at Blue Jays camp. “We never got to the point where I felt like I wanted to do the deal.”

A four-time All-Star at age 25, Guerrero said during the offseason he would cut off negotiations when he reported for spring training.

“I don’t want, especially my teammates, to go through any distractions about that,” Guerrero said. “I’m here today and I’m ready. I want to win a lot of games and I want to make it to the playoffs. That’s all that’s in my head right now.”

Guerrero has a $28.5 million, one-year contract and will be perhaps the top free agent on the market one year year after Juan Soto signed a record $765 million, 15-year contract with the New York Mets.

Guerrero hit .323 last season with a .940 OPS, 30 homers and 103 RBIs.

“We worked very hard and the motivation is still there,” Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said. “I’m confident that every thought, idea we had — every dollar that we had — was communicated. But we’re obviously disappointed to not have gotten that done. … It doesn’t change our desire. We will certainly be motivated and remain motivated.”

Guerrero came up through the Toronto system, made his big league debut in 2019 and has a .288 average, .863 OPS, 160 homers and 507 RBs.

Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro, team chairman Edward Rogers and Rogers Communications Inc. CEO Tony Staffieri were involved in the negotiations,

“There really aren’t degrees of getting it done or not getting it done,” Shapiro said. “It’s either a done deal or not a done deal. The bottom line result is we’re disappointed we couldn’t get a deal done.”

Guerrero’s father, Vladimir Guerrero, is a Hall of Famer and nine-time All-Star who was voted the 2004 AL MVP.

JUSTIN TURNER AGREES TO $6 MILLION, 1-YEAR DEAL WITH THE CHICAGO CUBS, AP SOURCE SAYS

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Justin Turner has agreed to a $6 million, one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation, giving the team additional infield depth.

Turner can earn an additional $2.5 million in bonuses, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the contract was pending a physical.

The addition of Turner would give the team some security at third base should Matt Shaw need more seasoning in the minors. The 23-year-old Shaw has been slowed by a left oblique issue in spring training.

The 40-year-old Turner also could back up Michael Busch at first base and go into the lineup at designated hitter. Turner played for Toronto and Seattle last year, batting .259 with 11 homers, 55 RBIs and a .354 on-base percentage in 139 games.

“He’s been a really good player for a long time, and I think that he’s someone that we can really learn a lot from,” Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson said. “Just his experience, and he’s just such a pro at what he does. … He’s somebody that you definitely want to have on your team.”

The Cubs pivoted to Turner after pursuing Alex Bregman in free agency. They were in the mix for the two-time All-Star before he agreed to a $120 million, three-year deal with the Red Sox last week.

Chicago is looking to make a playoff push after it went 83-79 last year and finished second in the NL Central for the second straight season. It hasn’t made the playoffs since it was swept by Miami in the wild-card round in 2020.

Turner fits an offseason pattern for the Cubs after they added outfielder Kyle Tucker and relievers Ryan Pressly and Ryan Brasier — all World Series winners. Turner is a .270 hitter with 13 homers and 42 RBIs in 86 career playoff games, all with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I’ve been a fan of his for a long time,” Cubs outfielder Ian Happ said. “The way he plays the game, I think he’s a natural hitter. His ability not only to drive the baseball, but, situationally hit. The swing, the way he thinks about hitting and all that stuff I think will be an asset for us.”

Turner made his major league debut with Baltimore in 2009. He is a .285 hitter with 198 homers, 814 RBIs and an .821 OPS in 1,678 games, also playing for the Mets and Red Sox.

Also Tuesday, the Cubs announced they had agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Chris Flexen that includes an invitation to big league camp for spring training. The 30-year-old Flexen went 3-15 with a 4.95 ERA in 30 starts and three relief appearances for the White Sox last year.

OHTANI THROWS A 2ND BULLPEN SESSION AS HE MAKES HIS WAY BACK TO THE MOUND FOR THE DODGERS

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani threw his second bullpen session of spring training on Tuesday, continuing the process of his return to the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani had his first bullpen session on Saturday.

He hopes to pitch this season for the first time since Aug. 23, 2023, with the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani underwent elbow surgery that limited the 30-year-old right-hander to hitting only last season with the Dodgers. Even so, Ohtani won his third MVP award while becoming the first player to join the 50/50 club with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases as the Dodgers won the World Series.

In addition to the elbow, Ohtani is recovering from a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder that occurred while sliding into second base during the World Series.

As a pitcher, Ohtani is 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA in his five-year major-league career that includes 608 strikeouts in 481 2/3 innings. In 2023 before the injury, he was 10-5 with 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 132 innings.

FOOTBALL NEWS

BALTIMORE RAVENS’ BEN CLEVELAND IS ARRESTED ON A CHARGE OF DRUNKEN DRIVING IN GEORGIA

ATLANTA (AP) — National Football League player Ben Cleveland of the Baltimore Ravens has been charged with drunken driving in Georgia, according to a sheriff’s report obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Cleveland, who previously played for the University of Georgia, was pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy near Milledgeville, Georgia, last Wednesday, the incident report shows.

A deputy noticed that Cleveland’s black pickup truck was weaving outside of its lane and left the roadway at one point, the incident report states. The truck then turned “and entered the opposite lane of travel, nearly going into the ditch,” a Baldwin County sheriff’s deputy wrote.

After Cleveland was stopped, he told the deputy he had been at a local country club and had consumed about three to four beers, but none in the previous two hours.

He agreed to a blood alcohol test and registered 0.178, which is over the legal limit in Georgia, the report states.

Cleveland was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stay in his lane.

Jail booking records do not list an attorney who could speak on Cleveland’s behalf. The Associated Press sent emails seeking comment to multiple representatives of the Ravens organization.

THREE TOP-25 PLAYERS, NO. 1 AMATEUR COMMIT TO COGNIZANT CLASSIC

The Cognizant Classic added a quartet of strong names to the field for next week’s tournament with commitments by a trio of top-25 players along with top-ranked amateur Luke Clanton on Monday.

The event begins Feb. 27 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Clanton, a junior at Florida State who is from nearby Hialeah, Fla., will be in the field on a sponsor exemption as he attempts to secure his PGA Tour card. He needs one point to reach the 20 necessary in the PGA Tour University Accelerated system. Clanton narrowly missed in his first opportunity when he missed the cut by one stroke at the WM Phoenix Open earlier this month.

The Cognizant will mark Clanton’s fourth PGA Tour start this season. While he has missed two of three cuts in 2025, he did tie for 15th at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Clanton, ranked 93rd in the Official World Golf Ranking, recorded a pair of runner-up finishes at the RSM Classic and the John Deer Classic last year, as well as two other top-10 finishes on tour.

He will be joined at PGA National by 17th-ranked Russell Henley, No. 21 Billy Horschel and No. 22 Sungjae Im, who also committed to the event Monday.

Henley, who won at PGA National in a playoff in 2014, will make his 11th start in the event. Im is also a former champion, claiming his maiden PGA Tour victory in 2020.

Horschel has been a regular at PGA National since starring at the University of Florida. He has five top-20 finishes in 12 previous starts in the tournament, with his best result a tie for fourth in 2017.

  • GAME 50 – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22 AT BLOOMINGTON
  • GAME 51 – SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23 AT BLOOMINGTON (WAS POSTPONED)
  • GAME 52 – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25 VS. BLOOMINGTON

FUEL LOOK FOR KEY DIVISIONAL POINTS AGAINST FORT WAYNE

INDIANAPOLIS– After a long week against Florida and Cincinnati on Sunday, the Fuel looks to gain more points in the central division. The Fort Wayne Komets are also coming off of a divisional shutout win, with tensions high as the fight for the playoffs continues.

LAST TIME OUT

The Fuel traveled to the Jungle for a Sunday game earlier this month. The night was a success, with the Fuel outscoring and outshooting the Komets in a 3-1 win. When it came to penalties, however, a total of 168 penalty minutes were tallied. In the third period (and post-buzzer) alone, 148 minutes were racked up, and three Fuel players were suspended.

DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE

With both teams scoring on the power play the last time they met, staying disciplined will be essential, even when it’s a rival team. The Fuel took after-whistle penalties in recent games, costing the team a goal. Discipline matters when taking penalties, when puck protection is needed, and when thwarting odd-man rushes.

PURDUE MEN’S BASKETBALL

#13 PURDUE DROPS ROAD TEST AGAINST #14 MICHIGAN STATE

[14] Michigan State 75, [13] Purdue 66 (Postgame Notes)

No. 14 Michigan State handed No. 13 Purdue a 75-66 setback to drop Purdue’s record to 19-8 overall and 11-5 in the Big Ten standings.

The loss was Purdue’s third straight – its longest losing streak since the 2019-20 season.

Purdue fell to 9-2 in the last 11 games against the Spartans, seeing a five-game winning streak end against Michigan State.

Purdue is now 4-6 against nationally-ranked teams this season. Purdue has played the fourth most-difficult schedule in the country.

Purdue fell to 8-8 when opponents score 70 or more points this season. When holding foes to 69 or fewer points, Purdue is 11-0.

Purdue has shot over 50.0 percent from the field in six of the last seven games, but is just 4-3 in that span.

Over the last two games, teams have shot 35-of-50 (.700) from the field in the second half (Wisconsin, 18-25; Michigan State, 17-25). The two opponents have shot 44-of-57 (.772) from inside the 3-point line in that span.

Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 24 points with three rebounds and two assists. He has scored at least 20 points in six straight games and in eight of the last nine contests. He is averaging 24.7 points per game over the last six contests.

Braden Smith scored 17 points with eight assists and five rebounds, Smith now has 683 career assists, just seven shy of the career record at Purdue.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Jase Richardson had 12 points and Frankie Fidler scored 11, leading No. 14 Michigan State to a 75-66 win over No. 13 Purdue on Tuesday night.

The Spartans (21-5, 12-3 Big Ten) have won three of four to pull within a half-game of conference-leading and 12th-ranked Michigan, heading into the rivals’ matchup on Friday night at Crisler Center.

Trey Kaufmann-Renn scored 24 and Braden Smith added 17 for the two-time defending Big Ten-champion Boilermakers (19-8, 11-5), who have lost three straight for the first time in five years.

Michigan State’s Coen Carr and Jaden Akins each scored 10 points.

The Boilermakers led by seven midway through the first half and the Spartans went on a surge to take a 33-31 lead at halftime.

Michigan State stayed in control in the second half and sealed the win by finishing 4 for 4 from the field.

Takeaways

Purdue: Without 7-foot-4 Zach Edey, now a rookie with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Boilermakers can’t protect the rim and the Spartans took advantage with lobs and dunks.

Michigan State: No one picked coach Tom Izzo’s team to win the Big Ten title before the season started, but the balanced and streaky squad has a shot with two games left against Michigan and a home game against No. 11 Wisconsin.

NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1990

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Six regular-season games left. Six games to flip the switch and get hot. Six games to play spoiler. Six games to cement your spot in the ACC Tournament. On Wednesday night, the Fighting Irish (11-14, 5-9) will throw back the clock and give fans a matchup they haven’t seen since 1990, when the SMU Mustangs roll into Purcell Pavilion. That matchup will tip off at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

The Irish lead the overall series 4-1 and are 2-0 in South Bend. That last South Bend matchup occurred on Jan. 17, 1989. It was a 67-45 victory in which Irish great LaPhonso Ellis played in.

The final six games present a challenge and unique opportunity at the same time. No doubt the Irish have the hardest remaining ACC schedule left having just played Louisville while SMU, Pitt, Clemson, Wake, Stanford and Cal await. According to ESPN, Clemson and Wake are projected NCAA Tourney teams while SMU sits in First Four out.

BURTON – A WALKING BUCKET

Grab your popcorn because Markus Burton is a certified walking bucket. After 39 days away rehabbing his knee injury, Burton returned on Jan. 4 and has been playing his best ball since. The sophomore fired off five consecutive games with 20 or more points in January, which hadn’t been done by an Irish player since Ben Hansbrough in February of 2011. In fact, Burton has produced 20+ points in 10 of his 12 games since his return.

Last week, Burton dropped a career-best 32-point performance at BC on Feb. 12. It marked the fourth-highest point total by a Notre Dame player in an ACC game.

With that said, he’s now averaging 22.9 ppg in ACC play which leads all league players. The next highest is Duke’s Cooper Flagg at 21.8.

Overall on the year, he’s averaging 21.3 ppg which places him fifth nationally. For perspective, the last Irish player to finish a season with a 20.0+ ppg average was Luke Harangody (21.8 ppg) in the 2009-10 season.

Now here’s the kicker. If you take out his two-point Rutgers injury game in which he departed four minutes in, Burton’s average would be 22.5 ppg which would rank him second nationally.

Lastly, Burton’s scoring average leads all sophomores in the nation.

CHASING ACHIEVEMENTS

Burton is quickly approaching 1,000 career points. He enters Wednesday’s SMU matchup with 961. He is currently on pace to become the seventh fastest Irish player to reach 1,000 career points, putting his name alongside the all-time greats:

  1. Austin Carr – 35 games
  2. Adrian Dantley – 44
  3. Tom Hawkins – 44
  4. Bob Arnzen- 47
  5. John Shumate – 47
  6. Troy Murphy – 48
  7. Markus Burton – ??? — currently at 51
  8. Gary Brokaw – 58
  9. Chris Thomas – 60

He would become the program’s 68th 1,000-point scorer which would move Notre Dame into fourth place for most 1,000 point scorers behind UNC, Duke and Louisville.

There’s another rare list Burton can write his name on as well. He is currently averaging 21.3 ppg and a team best 3.0 apg. If those averages hold, he’ll join David Rivers as the only Irish players to average 20+ points and 3+ assists in a season.

However, Burton isn’t the only one who can cement his name in the Irish record books this season. Grad transfer Matt Allocco owns a 3.76 assist-to-turnover ratio – the highest in program history for a season was 3.16 by Martin Inglesby back in 2000-01.

Allocco is also converting a career high 47.3 percent from deep. That number currently ranks second all-time for a season. The top spot belongs to Joe Fredrick who shot 52.1 percent in 1988-89.

BURTON BALLIN’

With Burton, we’ve talked about his scoring prowess and what records await, but let’s dive a little deeper.

In ACC play, the sophomore sensation currently ranks first in scoring, third in steals (1.9), ninth in threes per game (2.2) and eighth in free-throw percentage (.855).

Offensively speaking, Burton worked really hard in the offseason on his three-point shot and it shows. He went from a 30.0 percent shooter from three last year to 38.9 percent this season. He’s tied his career high of four made triples three times since returning Jan. 4 In fact, he’s converting 40.6% from deep in ACC play.

Burton is also the team’s best free-throw shooter, converting 85.2 percent from the stripe.

FINDING A 2ND HALF GEAR

Notre Dame men’s hoops developed a certain narrative over the ACC season of building double-digit first half leads, only to falter down the stretch and lose close. Virginia Tech, Florida State, Miami, Syracuse and NC State all followed the same script.

All but two of the nine ACC losses Notre Dame has ocurred was by a single-digit margin. Case in point, their average margin of defeat has been just 6.6. Three losses by one possession. Over the whole 2024-25 season, the Irish are 3-6 in games decided by six or fewer points.

What was great to see in the Boston College double-overtime win on Feb. 12 was the fact that Notre Dame flipped the script. They trailed the Eagles by 14 points with 14 minutes left in the game. However, this time around they were the team clawing back, they were the team giving the other fits. Even in double OT when a player was ejected and BC retook the lead, the Irish remained calm, dug deep and gutted out the 97-94 win.

BEST TWO GUARDS / BEST BIG THREE

With Burton averaging 21.3 ppg and Shrewsberry checking in at 13.7, we were curious where that stacked up amongst guard combos in the ACC. The answer – first. Their combined 35.0 tops Duke’s Flagg/Knueppel (32.9).

So then that got us thinking, where do ND’s big three of Burton, Shrewsberry and Davis (15.7 ppg) stack up amongst other ACC big threes – regardless of position. The answer was yet again number one.

The Irish trio are a combined 50.7 ppg, which tops Stanford’s trio of Raynaud/Blakes/Sellers and their 47.7.

NOTRE NOTABLES.

  • The 14-point comeback at BC was the largest come from behind victory in the Coach Shrews era.
  • The Irish completed a season sweep against Boston College for the first time since 2019.
  • Burton’s 32-point performance at BC was not only a career high but the fourth highest point total for an Irish player in an ACC game.
  • Burton has been ramping up his defensive pressure. He now ranks third in the ACC in steals/game at 1.9.
  • Notre Dame was a perfect 16-16 from the free-throw line against Virginia Tech on Feb. 8. It marked the third best free-throw shooting percentage game in program history.
  • Allocco boasts a true shooting percentage of 61.0 on the year.
  • Kebba grabbed a career high 12 rebounds in win at BC and recorded the game-winning putback.
  • Speaking of Kebba, the junior is averaging 2.8 offensive rebounds/game in ACC play, which ranks seventh.
  • Braeden bounced back from a 0-point showing vs. Virginia Tech with a combined 28 points over the next two games.
  • Sir Mohammed is shooting 53.8 percent from two-point range.

Caroline Strande and Jordan Meulemans are both out for the season. Meulemans was sidelined just days before Butler’s first game and Strande suffered a season-ending injury on Dec. 29 vs. Seton Hall. Meulemans made 61 3-pointers last year, shooting 42 percent from behind the arc.

BUTLER MEN’S BASKETBALL

BUTLER CAN’T OVERCOME TURNOVERS IN ROAD LOSS AT XAVIER

A decisive first-half Xavier run and 20 turnovers by Butler led the host Musketeers to a 76-63 win Tuesday night at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.

With the win, Xavier improves to 17-10 (9-7 BIG EAST). The Bulldogs are now 12-14 on the season.

KEY STRETCH: A 22-2 run turned a 19-19 tie with 12:23 remaining in the first half into a 41-21 Xavier advantage at the 6:25 mark.

IU INDY MEN’S BASKETBALL

MEN’S BASKETBALL HEADS TO MOTOR CITY TO FACE TITANS

DETROIT – Coming off the bye week, the IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team will hit the road to face Detroit Mercy (8-19, 4-12 HL) in Horizon League play on Wednesday night (Feb. 19) at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+. The two teams come in tied for the No. 10 spot in the Horizon League standings with the Jaguars having won the earlier meeting between the two, 95-61 on Jan. 9 in Indianapolis. Both teams are looking to snap a three-game skid.

The Jaguars have continued to rely heavily on the three-point line, ranking No. 22 in the country in threes made per game at 10.2. Graduate transfer Paul Zilinskas leads the Horizon League in threes made (78), threes per game (3.0/game) and three-point percentage (41.3%) to pace the attack. Behind him, fellow transfer Jarvis Walker is coming off a season-high 26-point effort against Oakland, including hitting five of the team’s 12 treys in the defeat. Zilinskas pumped in four triples as part of his 14-point night and Alec Millender made a pair. The Jaguars’ starting five accounted for all 67 of the team’s points.

Walker had a team-high 20 points when the Jaguars first met Detroit Mercy this season and Sean Craig chipped in 19 points and seven assists. Freshman DeSean Goode finished with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds (11 offensive) and leads the team at 7.4 rebounds per game in Horizon League play.

QUOTABLE

“We did leave a lot of points on the (scoreboard). We were one of the top-40 best shooting free throw teams in the country up until the last three weeks and we’ve kind of gone through a slump. We need to get back to being who we are from the line. That was a big problem tonight. If we would’ve shot better from the line, especially in the first half, that eight-point deficit at half would’ve been a two, three or four-point deficit. We missed a lot of wide open looks. Granted, we are tired – we have a lot of guys who are banged up and we’ve had a lot of injuries this season. This bye week couldn’t come at a better time for us. Our kids are playing hard, but we didn’t secure rebounds when we needed to and that’s where I really thought the game got us. Oakland is a mature, physical team that you need to capitalize when they give you those opportunities and tonight, we didn’t capitalize in those key moments,” Corsaro said following last Wednesday’s home loss to Oakland.

BALL STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TRAVELS TO MAC RIVAL TOLEDO IN MIDWEEK #MACTION WEDNESDAY

Opening Tip:

– Wednesday’s contest marks the 95th time in program history the two schools have met with  Toledo leading the all-time series record, 62-32. Ball State split the home-and-away series with the Rockets last season defeating them on the CBS Sports Network on Jan. 21, 2024 by a 65-51 ledger. The Cardinals then fell to the Rockets in Toledo on Feb. 24, 2024 in Savage Arena  by a 70-48 decision.  Ball State won its first meeting this year versus Toledo on CBS Sports Network by a score of 77-63 in Muncie on Jan. 20.

– With the win at Eastern Michigan Saturday, the Cardinals secured their spot in the 2025 MAC Tournament in Cleveland (March 12-15). This marks the 35th appearance in the MAC Tournament in program history.  Ball State has advanced to Cleveland 23 out of the past 25 seasons.  The Cardinals are 24-33 all-time in MAC Tournament play and have advanced to the MAC Tournament finals on six occasions.  Ball State defeated Bowling Green in 2009 in the MAC Tournament Championship game.  This is the 10th time in current head coach Brady Sallee’s tenure the Cardinals have punched their ticket straight to the MAC Tournament in Cleveland.

– Ball State set a program record for best MAC start improving to 12-0 in league play after beating EMU 74-69 in Ypsilanti on Feb. 15.

– The Cardinals are one of 12 teams remaining in the country with an undefeated conference ledger.  If Ball State defeats Toledo on Wednesday they will improve to 13-0 for the first time in program history. The last time a MAC school went 13-0 in league action was when Bowling Green went 14-0 in 2006-07 and 2008-09. Only two schools in the MAC have finished conference action undefeated and that was Bowling Green (16-0) in 2005-06 and Kent State (18-0) in 1997-98. Brady Sallee was an assistant coach with the Golden Flashes when Kent State went 18-0.

– The Cardinals have been road warriors the past four years during Mid-American Conference action. Ball State owns a 34-10 (.767) ledger when playing league games on the road dating back to 2021 which was their best showing as the Cardinals went 9-1 that year.

– Ball State has won 16-straight MAC regular season games. The Cardinals haven’t lost a regular season league contest since Feb. 24, 2024, which was at Toledo.

BSU on ESPNU:

The Ball State women’s basketball team will play in a nationally televised regular season game on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 12 p.m. ET when it hosts Kent State in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals are the only league school to have been chosen to play on ESPNU three years in row. The contest will be a rematch of a game played on Jan. 15, with the Cardinals defeating the Golden Flashes, 66-57, at the M.A.C Center. With eight games remaining in the MAC regular season, the Cardinals (18-4, 10-0 MAC) remain atop of the league standings two games ahead of their counterparts. Ball State is the only team in conference play that is undefeated, and the Cardinals currently have won 12 in a row. This is the second time this season that the Cardinals will have played on a national stage. Ball State played on the CBS Sports Network on Jan. 20 and will now be on ESPNU.

Scouting Toledo:

– The Rockets enter the matchup on a season-long six-game winning streak after defeating Akron, 75-54, at home on Saturday. Toledo out-scored the Zips, 48-27, in the second half to complete the regular-season sweep. Khera Goss and Sammi Mikonowicz each scored 16 points, with Goss shooting 3-of-6 from three-point range and Mikonowicz going 8-of-8 at the free-throw line. The Rockets are 10-1 at home this season.

– Toledo is 10-1 in Savage Arena, the fourth-consecutive season UT has reached double-digit home wins.

– Four of Toledo’s conference home victories have been by double digits, with the Rockets securing double-digit wins over Kent State, Ohio and Bowling Green and Akron. The Akron victory was Toledo’s largest home margin of MAC play.

– Toledo is out-shooting its opponents 49.2%-33.1% in its last four games.

The Possibility is Near:

With only six Mid-American Conference games left, Ball State remains atop of the league standings with a perfect 12-0 MAC mark. The Cardinals are on pace to be crowned the MAC Regular Season Champions which hasn’t been done since the 2002-03 season. It will mark only the third time in program history that the Ball State women’s basketball team will have been crowned the regular season title the other year was in 2001-02.

BALL STATE MEN’S BASETBALL

HILL’S APPARENT BUZZER BEATER WAIVED OFF; CARDINALS FALL 67-66 AT TOLEDO

TOLEDO, Ohio – Jermahri Hill appeared to make a game-winning layup at the buzzer, but the basket was waived off allowing Toledo to escape with a 67-66 win over the Ball State men’s basketball team on Tuesday night at Savage Arena.

The Cardinals (13-13, 6-7 Mid-American Conference) got the ball with 12 seconds to play after Toledo (16-10, 9-4 MAC) made a pair of free throws to take the lead. Hill maneuvered the ball near the paint before laying it up with his right hand, and the ball bounced in right after the buzzer sounded. The officials deemed the ball didn’t leave his hand until after the clock hit zeros, giving the win to the hosts.

Ball State led by as many as 11 points (33-22 at the 3:15 mark of the first half), taking a 35-28 lead into halftime. The Rockets scored the first nine points of the second half to take a lead and held a 54-46 advantage with 10 minutes to play, but the visitors responded by scoring 18 of the next 25 points to secure a 64-61 edge after a pair of Payton Sparks free throws at the 2:20 mark.

After Toledo’s Bryce Ford made a layup, Ball State’s Ethan Brittain-Watts hit two free throws for a 66-63 lead for the Cardinals with 1:13 on the clock. Ford hit a bucket with a minute to play to set up the events at the end of the game.

Hill (16 points, six assists, four rebounds) and Sparks (16 points, nine rebounds) led the Cardinals in scoring while Juanse Gorosito added 13 points. Brittain-Watts chipped in nine points, three rebounds and three assists for a Ball State team that entered Tuesday on a three-game winning streak.

Isaiah Adams had 18 points to pace the Rockets, who shot 45.2 percent (28-62) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-14) on 3-pointers and 66.7 percent (8-12) at the foul line. Toledo held an advantage in rebounding (32-30) and committed fewer turnovers (13-8).

Ball State went 48.9 percent (23-47) on field goals including 33.3 percent (5-15) from distance and made 88.2 percent (15-17) of its free throw attempts.

The Cardinals return home to host Buffalo at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Max McEwen (1-0) went 3.2 innings in solid relief, while Zac Laird and Gavin Morris kept the Eagles off the board by escaping runners on base situations late to secure Indiana State’s third consecutive win.

Florida Gulf Coast rallied back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning before Indiana State starting pitcher Jacob Spencer quelled the rally with a pair of outs to keep the Sycamores’ ahead 6-4.

Pena connected on a one-out single and advanced to second after Beck was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Nick Sutherlin lined a 1-1 offering down the right field line allowing Pena to score and give Indiana State the 8-5 lead.

Florida Gulf Coast mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh as the Eagles loaded the bases as Mac Moise drew a two-out walk. Laird entered the game and was able to retire Nathan Gagnon on a swinging strike three to keep the Indiana State lead intact.

The Sycamores turned to Gavin Morris to close out the ninth and the senior right-hander pitched his way out of trouble, relying on the Indiana State defense on his way to getting his first save of the 2025 season. EVANSVILLE BASEBALL

ACES BASEBALL DOESN’T OVERCOME LIPSCOMB COMEBACK IN EXTRA INNINGS

NASHVILLE – The University of Evansville baseball team held the lead twice on Tuesday afternoon but was unable to stop a furious comeback by the Lipscomb Bison in an 11-10 loss in 13 innings.

The Purple Aces bats came alive on Tuesday after a quiet weekend in Little Rock. But struggles on defense and on the mound didn’t get UE across the finish line to its first win of 2025. Starters Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS), Kevin McCormick (Orland Park, Ill. / St. Lawrence HS), and Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Ferdinand HS) all had three hits each for Evansville. While McCormick led the Aces in extra-base hits with a double and his first career home run.

“We clearly need to learn how to win,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the game. “Not playing complimentary baseball is all facets of the game.”

UE’s bats got started early on Tuesday loading the bases in the top of the first with two hits and a walk. But a ground out into a double play ended Evansville’s early threat. Lipscomb took the early lead in the bottom of the first scoring two unearned runs on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error from third to first base.

In the second inning, Ace’s lead-off hitter Charlie Longmeier (Seymore, Ind. / Seymore HS) reached first on an error and soon found himself at third after back-to-back singles. UE’s next two at-bats resulted in two outs with the bases loaded. Senior right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) took advantage of the situation with a single to third that scored Evansville’s first run of the game.

The Bison answered back in the bottom of the second with another run of their own to regain a two-run lead. Both teams’ bats were quieter over the next two innings as the Aces went down in order and Lipscomb added a hit in the fourth. UE’s offense returned in the fifth as the Bison put a new pitcher on the mound.

A lead-off walk for Rumsey and a long groundout put the speedy center fielder at second base. Senior second baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) then placed a long single into center field between all three Lipscomb outfielders giving Rumsey enough time to cross home plate. McGinnis hit would be Evansville’s last of the inning, but the defense took down the Bison in order to keep it a one-run game going into the sixth inning.

The Aces put together their first multi-run inning in the top of the sixth as sophomore Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) pinch-hit for Longmeier. Nehls began with a lead-off single to left. He would come home on the next at-bat as McCormick smacked a home run over the right field wall for UE’s first lead of the afternoon. Howard followed up McCormick’s homer with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice hit. Taubert hit his second RBI single of the game shortly after as Howard made it a two-run game.

Lipscomb wasn’t able to respond as Evansville had another big offensive inning in the top of the eighth. The Aces scored three more runs in the eighth as two runners scored on errors, and one came in on a sacrifice fly from Taubert. UE added another insurance run in the top of the ninth as Nehls put together a single and a stolen base early. McCormick would then send him home again with his first double of the season.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth with a sixth-run lead, things began to fall apart for Evansville on defense. The Bison loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth through walks with only one out on the board and capitalized by scoring three runs on a single, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. Lipscomb pushed the game to extra innings with a three-run homer over the scoreboard in right field before the Aces got the third out of the inning.

Neither team found the tying or the winning run over the next three innings. Both teams put at least one runner at third from the 10th through the 12th but neither brought those runner’s home. UE had a strong start to the top of the 13th as Rumsey took first after being hit by a pitch. He then stole his second base of the day to move into scoring position.

Evansville’s next at bat was a strikeout but was followed by a walk to McGinnis. With runners on shortstop Brodie Pert (Markham, Ontario, Canada) connected on his first hit of the season, a single to right center. The throw-in by the Bison was off, allowing Rumsey to score and break the tie. While the Aces two runners got into scoring position with one out on the miscalculated throw. But UE’s next two batters went down in order, heading into the bottom of the 13th leading by only one run.

Errors at short and on a passed ball to start the bottom of the 13th had Evansville facing a runner in scoring position early. Lipscomb’s next batter walked and both runners advanced as the Aces went for the out at first. With two runners in scoring position, UE intentionally walked the next Bison batter to set up a potential double play to end the game.

Lipscomb’s final batter hit a ground ball to third, putting Evansville in a position to get the double play. While the Aces got the second out at second base, an overthrow to first for the final out allowed the Bison to score both the tying run and the winning walk-off run. UE falls to 0-4 after the extra innings loss while Lipscomb improved to 2-1.

Evansville used six pitchers on Tuesday with sophomore right-hander Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe HS) getting the longest appearance at four innings with two hits, no runs, and five strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Jack Clevidence (Ankeny, Iowa / Ankeny HS) would be credited with the loss as he pitched all 3.2 extra innings in his first collegiate appearance. Clevidence ended his first outing with two hits, one earned run, two walks, and one putout.

The Aces are scheduled to play their first home game of 2025 this weekend. UE will open at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium on Friday night against Southern Indiana, weather permitting. First pitch on Friday against the Screaming Eagles is set for 6 p.m.

The Championships crown a conference title on both sides in the four-day event, running from Wednesday through Saturday at the Iowa Campus Recreation Center.

In 2024, USI made an improvement jumping one slot into seventh on both sides. The women totaled 157 points, while the men recorded 174 points. However, the Eagles look to make some more noise in year three. Both teams carry a chip on their shoulder after the women were selected to finish sixth in the conference preseason poll in October, while the men were predicted to finish last.

After the departure of Lindenwood University’s program, the Summit League features University of Denver, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, University of St. Thomas, Eastern Illinois University, and USI.

Meet Info/Scoring

The Summit Championships schedule is attached above with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Wednesday’s prelims start at 12:30 p.m. with finals at 6 p.m. The prelims determine qualification for a final’s heats in the evening. After prelims, the top eight swimmers in each individual heat move into A finals, while the next eight qualify for B finals with points on the line for each final’s swimmer. The diving format features the same structure competing in one-meter and three-meter diving contests.

Each school can race up two prelim relay teams for each event. However, each squad’s best relay team qualifies for the finals as the first-place team receives the highest point total, while the seventh-place finals team receives the lowest.

Tickets can be purchased at the Summit League website above at $60 for all four sessions. Live stats will be available at MeetMobile, along with live video attached above for a subscription price of $9.99. Stay tuned to @USIAthletics on X for extensive updates following each day, along with the primary updates on Facebook and Instagram with full day results and records.

Saturday, Feb. 22, 2 p.m. CT – Lucas Foley (L)

Sunday, Feb. 23, 1 p.m. CT – Spencer Boynton (R)

Next Up in Valpo Baseball: The Valparaiso University baseball team will hit the road to find warmer weather for the second straight weekend as the Beacons visit Memphis for a three-game set beginning on Friday. This will mark the final road weekend before Valpo attempts to open the home portion of the season next weekend by hosting Niagara.

Last Time Out: Valpo dropped both games of a season-opening doubleheader at Samford, falling 4-2 in the opener and 14-4 in seven innings in the nightcap. However, there were plenty of Beacon bright spots, including an eight-inning opening day complete game from Connor Lockwood, who took a tough-luck loss despite allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and no walks. Case Sullivan had four hits between the two games including three in the nightcap, while Ryan Maka homered in both games of the double dip. Valpo dropped the series finale 15-5 in seven innings despite Maka reaching base three times with two hits and a walk.

Following the Beacons: All three games this weekend will air on ESPN+ with Jeff Brightwell (Friday/Saturday) and Greg Gaston (Sunday) on the call. Live stats can be accessed for all three games. For in-game updates, follow @ValpoBaseball on X.

Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (202-335) is in his 11th season in charge of the program. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion.

A Look Back at 2024: Valpo finished 14-38 overall and 6-21 in Missouri Valley Conference play last season and hopes to return to the MVC Tournament field in 2025. Kaleb Hannahs earned Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors last season, while Kyle Schmack finished one home run shy of tying the program’s career and single-season records. The team launched 71 home runs, the second most in program history and most since 2001. Alex Ryan made an incredible leaping catch that was featured at No. 4 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays, robbing a grand slam as part of a 20-0 victory at UIC on April 28. The 2024 campaign also saw Valpo post a fielding percentage of .970 that ranked fourth in program history. The season also saw head coach Brian Schmack reach the 200-win threshold.

Series Notes: Valpo is 3-11 all-time against Memphis in a series that goes all the way back to 1948. The Beacons dropped two of three at Memphis to start the 2022 campaign, but did achieve a 10-8 win in the series finale after falling 13-0 and 4-3 in the first two games.

In the Other Dugout – Memphis

Under the direction of second-year head coach Matt Riser.

Slugged 68 home runs last season, the fifth most in program history.

Picked ninth of 10 in the American Conference preseason poll.

Won two out of three over SEMO in a season-opening series before playing a midweek game vs. Little Rock on Tuesday.

Maka Pushing the Home Run List

Ryan Maka slugged a home run in both games of the Feb. 14 season-opening doubleheader at Samford.

Maka moved his career home-run total to 18, moving to within three of cracking the program’s all-time top 10.

On the first day of the season, Maka already had half as many home runs as he had all of last season, when he slugged four.

Three more home runs would put Maka in a tie for 10th in career program history, joining Dan Schrum (1999-2002), Jamie Sykes (1994-1997), Dale Polonus (1986-1988), Marc Boggio (1999-2003) and Sam Shaikin (2016-2019).

Notes Wrapping Up Samford (Feb. 14-16)

In Friday’s opener, Connor Lockwood delivered Valpo’s first complete game since Bryce Konitzer had one of the seven-inning variety on April 28, 2024 at UIC.

That was Lockwood’s second career complete game after he went all nine on March 30 of last season vs. Bradley.

In game two of the doubleheader, the hit column was closer than the run column as the Bulldogs held a slim 11-9 advantage over the Beacons.

Liam Patton doubled in Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader as part of a two-hit game, while Case Sullivan had four hits on his first day in a Valpo uniform after going 3-for-3 with a walk in Game 2 out of the leadoff spot.

In Sunday’s series finale, Ryan Maka accounted for two of the team’s five hits, going 2-for-3 plus a walk.

Thomas Cooper doubled in Sunday’s game, Valpo’s lone extra-base knock of the contest and the first of his collegiate career.

The sweep came at the hands of a 36-win team from 2024 that was picked second in the Southern Conference Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs have reached NCAA Regional play as recently as 2023.

Inside the Schedule

Valpo will once again face a competitive schedule, which started against a Samford program that won 36 games last season.

Valpo is slated to host the earliest home games in program history from Feb. 28 – March 2 against a Niagara team that went 38-17 overall and 20-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference en route to a league title and NCAA Regional appearance last year.

After the early-season home weekend, Valpo will be back on the road for 15 straight, starting with a set at Ohio State (March 7-9), a 29-win Big Ten Conference club in 2024. That trip will continue with a visit to national baseball powerhouse Vanderbilt (March 11) of the Southeastern Conference, a 38-win NCAA Regional team last year against whom Valpo played a competitive, one-run game.

The Beacons head to Illinois (March 14-16) for the final nonconference weekend series. The Illini went 35-21 overall and 18-6 in Big Ten Conference play last season on their way to the NCAA Regional.

Valpo begins MVC play against instate foe Indiana State (March 21-23), the defending Valley regular-season champions and a team that won two NCAA Regional games as part of a 44-win season in 2024.

The league docket features a visit to Evansville, the defending MVC Tournament champion and a team that won 39 games including a regional title and made an NCAA Super Regional appearance last season.

Valpo will play 10 of its first 24 games against NCAA Regional teams from a year ago.

Beacon Blasts

Valpo launched 71 home runs last season, surpassing the 1985 season (64) to climb into second in program history.

Valpo held its highest single-season home run total during the BBCOR bat era that began in 2011.

The 71 bombs marked the program’s most since 2001, a year where the team launched a program-record 81 long balls.

This marked the first time ever that Valpo has hit at least 50 home runs in back-to-back years, as the Beacons hit 50 long balls in 2023, the fifth most in program history.

Valpo Single-Season Top 5 – Team Home Runs

2          2024    71

3          1985    64

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1912    Cracker Jacks, a sugar-coated popcorn with a mixture of peanuts confection immortalized in the song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, introduces ‘A Prize in Every Box.’ In 1914, the manufacturer will begin inserting the first of two company-produced baseball card issues featuring major league players, including those from the short-lived Federal League.

1935    Lou Gehrig signs a one-year deal with the Yankees for a reported $30,000, a seven thousand raise, but less than the $35,000 he had requested. Last season, the All-Star first baseman hit .363 with 49 homers and led the American League with 165 RBIs.

1942    Indian first baseman Hal Trosky tells the Des Moines Register he is leaving the team, citing his recurring migraine headaches, first experienced in 1938, as the reason for his early retirement. The 29-year-old good-hitting infielder will finish his 11-year career with a .302 batting average and attempt a comeback with the White Sox in 1944.

1946    Danny Gardella becomes the first major league player to join the Mexican League. The outfielder goes south of the border, lured by a salary of $10,000, more than double the amount offered by the Giants.

1953    After being hit by enemy fire during a combat mission, Ted Williams safely crash-lands his Panther jet at the Suwon’s K-13 Airbase in Korea, skidding along the airstrip for nearly a mile before coming to a stop. The midnight-blue F9F is a total wreck, but the Marine reservist, who quickly evacuates the burning aircraft, suffers only minor injuries.

1970    “….I have decided on the basis of facts developed at these conferences that Mr. McLain’s involvement in 1967 bookmaking activities and his associations at that time leave me no alternative but to suspend him from all organized baseball activities pending the completion of my review of his situation.” – BOWIE KUHN, commissioner of baseball announcing Denny McLain’s suspension. After a five-and-a-half-hour meeting with Denny McLain, the pitcher’s lawyer, William Aiken, and baseball’s security chief, Henry Fitzgibbon, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspends the Tigers right-hander indefinitely for bookmaking and his associations at that time. Yesterday, the 1968 Cy Young Award recipient appeared voluntarily before a Federal grand jury in Detroit.

1977    Unlike his previous decisions concerning the A’s, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn does not void a deal as not being in the best interest of baseball when he allows the Rangers to purchase southpaw Paul Lindblad from Oakland for $400,000. The left-handed reliever will appear in 42 games for Texas this season, posting a 4-5 record with an ERA of 4.20 for the second-place club.

1981    When the player-management panel cannot reach a compromise position, baseball implements a compensation plan that allows a team to sign a ranking free agent, giving up a roster player and an amateur draft choice in return. The owners’ move, seen by the players as undermining the value of free agency, will lead to a midseason strike, forcing the cancellation of 713 games.

1983    Fernando Valenzuela becomes the first player awarded $1,000,000 via arbitration. The 22-year-old Mexican southpaw has compiled a career record of 34-20 during his three years with the Dodgers.

1987    After signing a contract as a free agent with the A’s less than a month ago, 37-year-old Vida Blue unexpectedly retires from baseball. The veteran southpaw, who played a significant role in the A’s consecutive world championships in 1972, 1973, and 1974, compiled a 209-161 record during his 17-year major league career, including stints with the Giants and Royals.

2002    The 37-year-old Jose Canseco (.258, 16, 49) signs a minor league contract with the lame-duck Expos. The 17-year veteran, the American League Rookie of the Year in 1985 and its MVP a season later, is 38 homers shy of the coveted 500 mark.

2008    In a deal that includes a $10 million club option, sophomore Ian Kinsler (.286, 14, 55) inks a five-year, $22 million contract with the Rangers. With the signing of the 24-year-old second baseman and last season’s contract extension for All-Star shortstop Michael Young, Texas has locked up the middle of its infield through 2013.

2009    Despite his poor performance last season, the Braves give Jeff Francoeur (.239, 11, 71) a significant raise over his previous salary of $460,000, agreeing to a one-year contract worth $3,375,000 with the outfielder. The deal, a compromise between their two offers, comes just hours before Arizona’s scheduled salary arbitration hearing.

2010    The Nationals finalize a $2 million, one-year deal that includes the opportunity to earn up to $3 million in performance-based bonuses with former Yankee pitcher Chien-Ming Wang (1-6, 9.64 ERA). The 29-year-old right-hander, who hasn’t been the same since injuring his foot running the bases in a 2008 interleague game against Houston, underwent shoulder surgery last July and is not expected to pitch in the first few months of the season.

2012    Before a 3-1 loss to the Devils at the Bell Centre, the NHL’s Canadiens pay an emotional tribute to the late Gary Carter with a five-minute video set to The Eagles’ song New Kid in Town. During warmups, the team dons No. 8 Carter jerseys with the team’s mascot Youppi!, who once represented the Expos, wearing the former NL club’s colors instead of his usual bleu-blanc-rouge, honoring the memory of the only Montreal player enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

2014    Avoiding arbitration, Homer Bailey (11-12, 3.49) and the Reds agree to a $105 million, six-year deal, including a $25 million mutual option for 2020. The 27-year-old starter from Texas, the author of two major league no-hitters, will continue to be part of Cincinnati’s young rotation, including Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Mike Leake, and southpaw Tony Cingrani, all under the age of 30.

Per the National Football Foundation’s website bio, Coach Hubbard was the only HBCU head coach to win the Division I-AA (now FCS) national title, Rudy Hubbard posted 83 wins in his 12 seasons at Florida A&M.  During his tenure at Florida A&M from 1974-85, Hubbard compiled an 83-48-3 overall record, the third most wins in school history behind fellow College Football Hall of Fame Coaches Jake Gaither (203) and Billy Joe (86). In 1978, Hubbard guided Florida A&M to a 12-1 record and wrapped up the season winning the inaugural NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship as the Rattlers defeated UMass, 35-28.
