TOP INDIANA HEADLINES
INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jackson Shelstad had 18 points and TJ Bamba scored 17 to help No. 23 Oregon pull away late for a 72-59 victory over Indiana in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday.
The Ducks (24-8) head into Friday’s quarterfinal round against No. 7 Michigan State, the Big Ten regular-season champs, riding an eight-game winning streak.
Indiana (19-13) lost to Oregon for the second time in nine days and now must wait until Sunday to see if it makes the 68-team NCAA Tournament field.
Malik Reneau scored 19 points to lead the Hoosiers, while Trey Galloway added 15 points and nine assists.
Oregon took control by scoring the final 10 points of the first half, giving it a 37-29 lead and sealed the victory with a late 9-0 run to take a 65-56 lead. Indiana couldn’t recover from either spurt.
Takeaways
Indiana: The Hoosiers may have done enough to make the tourney field. The question is whether they’ll avoid a First Four game in Dayton, Ohio. They have no control over that now.
Oregon: The Ducks didn’t earn a lot of style points, but they did advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round — and in March, that’s all that matters.
Key moment
After the Hoosiers cut the deficit to 56-54 with 7:32 to play, Indiana was held scoreless for the next 5:28.
Key stat
Indiana was 5 of 10 at the free-throw line and Oregon made eight 3-pointers compared with only four for the Hoosiers.
Up next
Oregon will try to get even with the Spartans after losing 86-74 in East Lansing, Michigan, on Feb. 8.
PURDUE MEN’S BASKETBALL
#20 Purdue 76, USC 71 (Postgame Notes)
No. 20-ranked and sixth-seeded Purdue advanced to Friday’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals with a 76-71 win over USC on Thursday night.
The win improved Purdue’s record to 22-10 overall. The win was Purdue’s ninth victory in its last 11 games in Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Purdue improved to 1-0 all-time in the tournament’s second round. The Boilermakers will carry a 10-9 record in the quarterfinals into Friday’s tilt with Michigan.
Purdue has won seven of its last nine games in the Big Ten Tournament, dating to the 2022 tournament here in Indianapolis.
The win was Purdue’s 16th quad-1 or quad-2 victory, tied for the sixth most in the country.
Purdue has now won 114 games in the last four seasons (since 2021-22), tied for the seventh most by a senior class in Big Ten history. A win over Michigan would tie the class for the fourth-most victories by a class in league history.
Purdue went 9-of-23 from 3-point range, and is now 69-of-161 (.429) from 3-point range in the last seven games.
Purdue had nine turnovers in the first half, but just one in the second half.
Purdue’s bench had 19 points, going 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-10 from 3-point range with three turnovers.
Trey Kaufman-Renn tied a career high with 30 points and had seven rebounds and two assists. Kaufman-Renn is now 21st on the single-season points scored list with 642 points.
Kaufman-Renn is now averaging 20.1 points per game on the season.
Braden Smith scored 12 points with nine assists, three rebounds and a steal. Smith now has 518 points, 281 assists, 148 rebounds and 73 steals. He needs two rebounds and two steals to become the second player in NCAA history (Georgia Tech’s Kenny Anderson, 1989-90) to have at least 500 points, 275 assists, 150 rebounds and 75 steals in a season.
Smith has 726 assists in his career, needing just five assists to move into the top five in career assists by a Big Ten player. His 726 assists are the seventh most by a player in NCAA history through the end of his junior season.
Kaufman-Renn and Smith are the first Purdue teammates to each have at least two 30-point games in the same season.
Camden Heide had nine points (3-of-3 from 3-point range) with a career-high 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of action.
INDIANAPOLIS — Trey Kaufman-Renn matched a career high with 30 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 28 seconds left, and No. 20 Purdue scored the final five points to beat Southern California 76-71 on Thursday night in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.
The sixth-seeded Boilermakers (22-10) trailed by 10 points in the first half, but they tied it by halftime and emerged from a back-and-forth second half thanks largely to Kaufman-Renn, who finished 12 of 20 from the field and 6 of 11 from the free-throw line.
Purdue advanced to face No. 22 and second-seeded Michigan in Friday’s quarterfinals. The teams split this season, with each winning at home.
With USC (16-17) trailing by three in the closing seconds, Desmond Claude turned the ball over before the Trojans could attempt a tying 3-pointer. Big Ten Player of the Year Braden Smith made two free throws to finish the scoring with 3.6 seconds remaining. Smith had 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting and nine assists.
Claude led the Trojans with 18 points. Wesley Yates added 13.
Takeaways
USC: The Trojans have the athletic skill and length to match up with most teams and pushed Purdue despite having played a double-overtime game the night before. On talent alone, this team should get an NIT bid.
Purdue: Despite struggling to defend taller, quicker players in the backcourt, the Boilermakers did just enough in the final moments. They had lost five of their previous seven.
Key moment
Kaufman-Renn made a layup with 5:14 left to tie the game at 67-all, and Purdue never trailed gain.
BUTLER MEN’S BASKETBALL
Top-seeded St. John’s posted a 78-57 win over Butler Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
With the win, the Red Storm (28-4) advance to Friday’s semifinals and will meet either Marquette or Xavier. St. John’s is ranked No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, in this week’s national polls.
Butler is 14-19 on the season.
OF NOTE:
After Butler cut the Red Storm lead to eight (39-31) with 18:16 remaining in the contest, St. John’s scored 14 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 53-32 advantage with 13:59 to play.
BIG EAST Player of the Year RJ Luis Jr. led St. John’s with 20 points; Kadary Richmond and Aaron Scott each scored 15.
Butler was led Patrick McCaffery, who hit four three-pointers on his way to 16 points; Jahmyl Telfort scored 11 points, while Finley Bizjack added 10 points.
The St. John’s defense held Butler to 35-percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers. The Red Storm converted those turnovers into 24 points.
St. John’s shot 47 percent from the field and had 44 points in the paint.
St. John’s held a 44-35 rebounding advantage, led by eight from Richmond.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY
1954 Hank Aaron, filling in for Bobby Thomson, who broke his ankle yesterday, starts his first game wearing a Braves uniform. The 20-year-old from Mobile (AL) makes such an impression the club offers him a major league contract after he collects three hits, including a home run, in the spring training game against the Red Sox.
1961 The Mets lure former Yankee general manager George Weiss out of retirement to become the club’s first president, reportedly offering the four-time The Sporting News Executive of the Year a five-year deal at $100,000 annually. During the 67-year-old New Haven native’s five years in the post, the expansion team will compile a record of 260–547 (.322), finishing last four times.
1993 The Reds announce the prohibition of team president Marge Schott’s Saint Bernard from accessing the Riverfront Stadium field for the season. The mandate to ban Schottzie 02 comes from the MLB Executive Council, which has received numerous complaints from the players about dogs running on the field.
1995 The players’ union makes it clear that if the owners use replacement players during regular-season games and the results count, the strike will continue. The NLRB also announced that the board is considering charging MLB owners with two counts of unfair labor practices.
2003 Cablevision, maintaining its “long-standing philosophy,” of allowing customers to choose to receive paid programming, agrees to a one-year interim deal to offer YES Network to New York Yankees fans for a fee, ending a bitter and costly yearlong feud. The arrangement makes YES a premium channel instead of a basic cable channel, dropping the new network’s previous mandate to make every subscriber pay for it regardless of the viewer’s choice.
2003 Baseball suspends Montreal outfielder Vladimir Guerrero for three regular-season games and Marlin starter Brad Penny for five after igniting an exhibition game bench-clearing brawl earlier in the week. After being hit in the chest, the Expo All-Star, with a bat in his left hand, swings his right fist around Florida catcher Matt Treanor, trying to restrain him, missing the starting pitcher, who retaliated with a punch that also missed its mark.
2003 “Must be in the front row!”- BOB UECKER, a quip from beer commercials that have become a famous cry in ballparks nationwide. Bob Uecker, the Brewers’ TV/radio play-by-play announcer, is chosen for induction into the broadcasters’ wing of the Hall of Fame as the Ford C. Frick Award recipient. The 68-year-old former backup catcher, a member of Milwaukee’s broadcast crew since 1971, is best known for the humor he has brought to the game through his starring role in the cult movie Major League and the Miller Lite beer commercials.
2003 Dependent on passing a physical, free agent Kenny Lofton agrees to a one-year pact to play with the Pirates this season. The 35-year-old leadoff man would likely start in center, moving Brian Giles to left with left fielder Reggie Sanders going to right field.
2006 Avoiding a trial scheduled to begin on Opening Day, Major League Baseball settles a lawsuit with an Atlanta-based company claiming it owned the trademark rights to Washington Nationals. MLB sued Bygone Sports LLC, asking the court to declare that the trademark for the name Nationals does not belong to the company because its sole purpose in filing the September 2002 trademark application was to capitalize on the renaming of the team that recently shifted from Montreal to Washington.
2006 Terry Francona agrees to a two-year contract extension, keeping the skipper at the helm through 2008. The Red Sox manager replaced Grady Little in December 2003 and promptly brought Boston to its first World Championship in 86 years.
2006 Washington, D.C. officials unveil the design for the Nationals’ new home, scheduled to be opened in 2008. The glass-and-steel 41,000-seat ballpark will feature pale stone chosen to complement the nation’s capital’s familiar skyline.
2008 The Padres’ new left-hander starter, Randy Wolf, struggles in a 6-2 spring training exhibition loss to the Brewers in Peoria, Arizona. The pitcher’s brother, Jim, is little help as the home plate umpire, an occurrence not allowed during a regular-season game and marking the only time it has ever happened when the San Diego hurler gives up three runs in four innings.
