RORY MCILROY WINS MASTERS IN DRAMATIC FASHION, COMPLETES CAREER SLAM

It was finally Rory McIlroy’s time, even if it took a little longer than perhaps was necessary.

McIlroy birdied the first playoff hole with a short putt after missing a chance to win in regulation, capturing the Masters and completing the career Grand Slam on Sunday in Augusta, Ga.

“This is my 17th time here, and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time,” the Northern Irishman said. “I think the last 10 years coming here with the burden of the Grand Slam on my shoulders and trying to achieve that — yeah, I’m sort of wondering what we’re all going to talk about going into next year’s Masters.”

McIlroy’s 1-over-par 73 left him tied with England’s Justin Rose, who posted 66 and waited for McIlroy to finish. They both shot 11-under 277 for the week.

Re-playing the 18th hole at Augusta National Golf Club, McIlroy’s approach shot rolled back toward the hole and inside Rose’s ball. After Rose missed a birdie attempt and notched a par, McIlroy didn’t flub another chance for a victory.

He dropped his putter, put his hands on his head and fell prostrate on the green, sobbing.

“There was a lot of pent-up emotion that just came out on that 18th green,” McIlroy said. “A moment like that makes all the years and all the close calls worth it.”

It marked the fifth major championship for McIlroy, and his first since capturing the PGA Championship for the second time in 2014.

McIlroy needed par at No. 18 to win in regulation, but after blasting from a greenside bunker on the 18th hole he rolled a 5-foot par putt too far to the left.

It was a starkly different reaction from when he departed the 18th green following Thursday’s first round, which included a pair of backside double bogeys and dodging the media on the way to the practice area.

Rose spoke briefly to McIlroy after the playoff and later added perspective to what just happened.

“This is a historic moment in golf, isn’t it — someone who achieves the career Grand Slam,” Rose said. “I just said it was pretty cool to be able to share that moment with him. Obviously, I wanted to be the bad guy today, but still, it’s a momentous occasion for the game of golf.”

The new champion — who gave away his two-shot lead through 54 holes with a double bogey at No. 1 — also recovered from a disastrous stretch on the back nine to birdie the 17th hole for a brief one-stroke lead. McIlroy’s bogey on No. 11, double bogey on No. 13 and bogey on No. 14 appeared to send him on track for another final-round collapse at a major.

McIlroy said sending his ball into the creek on a wedge shot on the par-5 13th could have doomed his chances.

“I did a really good job of bouncing back from that,” he said.

McIlroy recovered for a birdie on the par-5 15th hole by drawing a tremendous second shot around a tree, over a water hazard and to 6 feet of the pin, where he two-putted for birdie.

Then he stuck his approach on No. 17 and sank the putt to take the lead.

Rose, seeking his first Masters title, had six birdies and two bogeys across the last eight holes, finishing with a 20-foot birdie putt.

“To make the putt on 18, the one you dream about as a kid, to obviously give myself an opportunity and a chance was an unbelievable feeling,” Rose said.

Rose was the leader after the first and second rounds, and after a tough 75 on Saturday he made a major final-round push. He had only four pars on his card — countering four bogeys with 10 birdies.

Patrick Reed (69 on Sunday) was third at 9 under. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler (69) placed fourth at 8 under, giving him four consecutive top-10 finishes at the Masters.

“I was just proud of the way we hung in there and put up a good fight,” Scheffler said.

Bryson DeChambeau, who figured to be McIlroy’s biggest threat and in the final pairing, took the lead after the second hole before stalling with back-to-back bogeys and a string of pars to skid off the path. By the time he double-bogeyed No. 11, he was tied for ninth and seventh strokes back.

DeChambeau’s 75 left him at 7 under, tied for fifth place with South Korea’s Sungjae Im (69).

DeChambeau said his troubles began with a putt on the third hole that scooted well beyond the cup.

“There’s no way that putt goes that far by,” he said. “I just didn’t realize how firm and fast it could get out here. It’s great experience. Won’t let that happen again.”

NBA ROUNDUP: CLIPPERS TAKE 5TH IN WEST, PUSH WARRIORS TO PLAY-IN

James Harden had 12 of his game-high 39 points in overtime Sunday afternoon, delivering the Los Angeles Clippers a 124-119 win over the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco that sends the Clippers into the playoffs while relegating the Warriors to the play-in bracket.

Kawhi Leonard contributed 33 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals, and Ivica Zubac logged 22 points and 17 rebounds, helping the Clippers secure the fifth seed in the West and an opening-round matchup with the No. 4 Denver Nuggets.

Stephen Curry bombed in 36 points, 21 coming on 3-pointers, for the Warriors, who dropped to seventh in the West and will face the No. 8 Memphis Grizzlies in a play-in game Tuesday night in San Francisco.

Harden gave the Clippers the lead for good in the five-minute overtime with a 3-pointer 69 seconds into the session. He later added another 3-pointer, two free throws, a floater in the lane and two more clinching foul shots with 3.0 seconds left to secure Los Angeles’ eighth consecutive win.

Hawks 117, Magic 105

Keaton Wallace had a triple-double with 15 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds to lift host Atlanta over Orlando. The teams will meet again Tuesday in Orlando in the play-in tournament, with the winner claiming the seventh seed and a first-round match-up against Boston.

It was a day for the reserves to log plenty of minutes as both teams rested their primary players. Wallace is in his fourth year as a pro but spent most of that time in the G League before making his NBA debut in October 2024. Terance Mann led the Hawks with 19 points. Jacob Toppin had a career-high 17 points for Atlanta, including five 3-pointers.

Anthony Black led the Magic with 20 points and Jett Howard had 16 off the bench. Orlando finished the regular season 41-41, Atlanta 40-42. The teams split four regular-season meetings.

Celtics 93, Hornets 86

Payton Pritchard tossed in a game-high 34 points to help Boston defeat visiting Charlotte.

As expected, the playoff-bound Celtics rested most of their top players. Boston received 15 points from Sam Hauser and 11 points and eight rebounds from Luke Kornet.

Charlotte, which trailed by 21 early, tied the game 86-86 on a Moussa Diabate layup with 2:13 to play, but Boston regained control by scoring the game’s final seven points. Josh Okogie and Jusuf Nurkic each scored a team-high 14 points for the Hornets.

Pacers 126, Cavaliers 118 (2OT)

Indiana rallied from 27 down — the biggest comeback in team history — to beat Cleveland in double overtime in a battle of Eastern Conference playoff teams.

Two-way player RayJ Dennis scored seven straight points in the second overtime, and rookie Johnny Furphy added six points in the second extra period for the Pacers, who reached 50 wins for the first time since 2013-14. Quenton Jackson led Indiana with 21 points, and Tony Bradley collected 14 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. The No. 4 Pacers take on No. 5 seed Milwaukee in the opening round.

The Cavaliers rested nine of their top 10 scorers, including injured Donovan Mitchell (ankle) along with fellow All-Stars Evan Mobley and Darius Garland. No. 1 seed Cleveland will face the No. 8 seed in the East, which won’t be determined until the conclusion of the play-in tournament.

Wizards 119, Heat 118

Bub Carrington made a heavily contested floater at the buzzer to lead visiting Washington over short-handed Miami.

Down seven with four minutes remaining, the Heat went on an 11-0 run. They took a 118-114 lead with 8.5 seconds left, but Justin Champagnie cut it to one with a quick 3-pointer. Miami’s Josh Christopher then committed a costly turnover in the backcourt to give Washington the ball back with 4.4 seconds left, setting up Carrington’s game-winner.

The Heat will visit the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday in the play-in tournament, and if they win, they advance to play on Friday against the loser of Tuesday’s matchup between the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic. If the Heat win both games, they will be the No. 8 seed and play a first-round series against the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers.

Bulls 122, 76ers 102

Kevin Huerter scored 18 points as visiting Chicago topped Philadelphia in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Talen Horton-Tucker chipped in 17 points and Jalen Smith had 12 points and 10 boards for Chicago. The Bulls came into the day already locked into the No. 9 seed in the Eastern Conference and will host the Miami Heat in the play-in tournament on Wednesday. Chicago sat Josh Giddey (wrist) and limited the minutes of its other key players.

Lonnie Walker IV scored 31 points to pace Philadelphia, which missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17. The Sixers were ravaged by injuries to key players and were forced to give significant playing time to players such as Jared Butler (19 points) and Adem Bona (16).

Knicks 113, Nets 105

Landry Shamet came off the bench to score 29 points, and short-handed New York rode a 17-0 third-quarter run to hold off host Brooklyn in the regular-season finale for both teams.

New York, already locked into the Eastern Conference’s No. 3 seed for the playoffs, played without stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson, the latter of whom recently returned from injury. Mikal Bridges extended his consecutive games streak to 556, but only after appearing for the first six seconds vs. the Nets.

Tyrese Martin and Trendon Watford each scored 20 points to lead the Nets, and both grabbed seven rebounds.

Nuggets 126, Rockets 111

Michael Porter Jr. scored 19 points, Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon finished with 18 apiece, and Denver clinched the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference with a win over host Houston.

The Nuggets, who won their final three games to earn home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, will face the fifth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers. Jokic, who had seven rebounds and seven assists, is the third player to average a triple-double for an entire season. His 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists ranked in the top three in the NBA in those categories.

The Rockets dropped their final three games after securing the No. 2 seed in the West. Houston will face the winner of the play-in game on Tuesday between the host Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies. Fred VanVleet and Amen Thompson scored 15 points and Alperen Sengun had 14 for the Rockets.

Grizzlies 132, Mavericks 97

Lamar Stevens, Marvin Bagley III, Cam Spencer and Jay Huff combined for 101 points to lift host Memphis to a win over Dallas.

Stevens had 31 points and six rebounds, Bagley added 25 points and 12 boards, Spencer contributed 23 points and seven assists and Huff finished with 22 points, six rebounds and six blocks in the regular-season finale for both teams. Daniel Gafford paced the Mavericks with 20 points and seven rebounds. Jaden Hardy scored 17 and Max Christie had 14.

Both teams rested the majority of their starters and key reserves ahead of Tuesday’s play-in tournament. Memphis will play as the West’s No. 8 seed against No. 7 Golden State. Dallas, as the 10th seed, will face No. 9 Sacramento.

Bucks 140, Pistons 133 (OT)

Pat Connaughton saved 10 of his career-high 43 points for overtime, Kyle Kuzma chipped in with 22 in just 12 minutes and Milwaukee outlasted visiting Detroit in a meaningless regular-season finale that took a back seat to Malik Beasley’s pursuit of the NBA’s 3-point crown.

The Pistons’ Beasley, who began the day with 312 3-pointers, one fewer than league leader Anthony Edwards, buried seven of 11 attempts from deep in just 19 minutes to move ahead by six. However, Edwards hit seven 3-pointers to take the title 320-319 in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ win over the Utah Jazz.

The Pistons entered the game locked into sixth playoff position in the East, where they will take on the third-seeded New York Knicks. They rested regular starters Cade Cunningham, Isaiah Stewart and Ausar Thompson. Likewise, the Bucks knew beforehand that they’d finish fifth in the East and draw the No. 4 Indiana Pacers in the first round. They sat out Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis, as well as Damian Lillard, who hopes to return from a calf injury in time for the postseason.

Timberwolves 116, Jazz 105

Anthony Edwards made the most of a second chance, scoring 43 points to help Minnesota clinch a playoff spot by knocking off Utah in Minneapolis.

The Timberwolves earned the sixth seed in the West playoffs and will face the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. Edwards was allowed to play in the regular-season finale after the NBA rescinded his 18th technical foul — and the accompanying automatic one-game suspension — that he’d been assessed Friday against Brooklyn.

Brice Sensabaugh scored 22 points as the Jazz finished the season with the NBA’s worst record (17-65) after Washington’s upset win at Miami earlier in the day.

Thunder 115, Pelicans 100

Aaron Wiggins scored 28 points, Branden Carlson had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and visiting Oklahoma City never trailed during a victory over New Orleans.

Kenrich Williams had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Isaiah Joe scored 17 and Dillon Jones had 13 points and 10 rebounds as the NBA-best Thunder finished the winningest regular season in franchise history on a four-game winning streak. Oklahoma City dressed just nine players and didn’t play any of its starters.

Antonio Reeves scored 20 points, Jamal Cain had 18, Lester Quinones had 17, Keion Brooks Jr. had 15, Jose Alvarado scored 14 and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl added 10 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Pelicans, who finished their second-worst season in franchise history on a seven-game losing streak. New Orleans dressed just eight players for the third consecutive game.

Trail Blazers 109, Lakers 81

Dalano Banton matched a season high with 23 points to fuel host Portland to a convincing victory over Los Angeles in the teams’ regular-season finale.

While the Trail Blazers have long since been removed from playoff contention, the third-seeded Lakers were able to rest stars Luka Doncic, LeBron James (left groin strain) and Austin Reaves, among others, ahead of their first-round playoff series against the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.

Banton joined Toumani Camara by sinking four 3-pointers for Portland. Matisse Thybulle scored 15 points, Camara finished with 14, Rayan Rupert had 13 and Donovan Clingan collected 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Trail Blazers. Dalton Knecht recorded 27 points, Shake Milton had 16 and Jordan Goodwin added 12 off the bench to pace the Lakers.

Kings 109, Suns 98

Sacramento capitalized on visiting Phoenix having a depleted roster and secured home-court advantage for its upcoming Western Conference play-in matchup.

Sacramento was already locked into a No. 9 vs. No. 10 contest with Dallas in the play-in. But with the Kings pulling out of a two-game slump, and the Mavericks losing a blowout to Memphis, Sacramento draws hosting duties. The Kings host the Mavericks on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to play the loser of Tuesday’s play-in game between the host Golden State Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Jonas Valanciunas came off the bench to lead the Kings with 22 points and 10 boards, while Domantas Sabonis posted his 62nd double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Zach LaVine’s 16 points ended a five-game streak of 25-plus point performances. Playing without Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, the Suns were led by Grayson Allen’s 20 points and Tyus Jones’ 17 points.

Spurs 125, Raptors 118

Keldon Johnson scored 23 points off the bench and Stephon Castle added 20, which included a late basket and free throw, as host San Antonio roared back in the second half to beat Toronto in the season finale for both teams.

Neither the Spurs nor the Raptors qualified for the postseason. San Antonio has not been in the playoffs since 2019, while the Raptors failed to reach the postseason for the third straight year.

Harrison Barnes added 18 points for San Antonio while Chris Paul hit for 15 and Julian Champagnie scored 14. Toronto’s Scottie Barnes led all scorers with 35 points and added 11 rebounds and eight assists. Jamison Battle added 25 points and Jonathon Mogbo racked up 14 rebounds and 10 assists — missing a triple-double by one point.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL NEWS

MLB ROUNDUP: PADRES MAKE HISTORY WITH THREE-SHUTOUT SWEEP

Michael King allowed just two hits and one walk in his first career complete game Sunday as the San Diego Padres blanked the visiting Colorado Rockies 6-0, becoming the first team in eight years to sweep a three-game series with shutouts.

King retired the first 13 men he faced before Michael Toglia singled with one out in the fifth, then issued a two-out walk to Hunter Goodman in the eighth. Ezequiel Tovar singled in the ninth, but that was it for Colorado’s offense as it became the first team since the 2017 Kansas City Royals (versus Cleveland) to be shut out in every game of a three-game series.

King (3-0) fanned eight and Jose Iglesias went 2-for-2 with two RBIs as San Diego won its fourth straight and improved to 10-0 at home. Its 13-3 record ties the 1998 team, which won the National League pennant, for the best start in franchise history. It was also the first time in franchise history the Padres had swept a three-game series without yielding a run.

Kyle Freeland (0-3) lasted five innings for the Rockies, allowing eight hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts. He ran into two-out trouble in the first, when the Padres collected four runs to decide the issue early.

Red Sox 3, White Sox 1

Garrett Crochet allowed one run on one hit in 7 1/3 innings and Trevor Story homered and drove in three runs to help Boston defeat host Chicago White.

Crochet (2-1) didn’t surrender a hit until Chase Meidroth — one of four players the White Sox acquired when they traded Crochet to the Red Sox in December — poked a single just past shortstop Story with one out in the eighth inning. Crochet, who struck out 11 and walked one, retired the first 15 batters he faced. Brooks Baldwin became Chicago’s first baserunner when he led off the sixth with a walk.

Story had three hits in the game, including a two-run double off White Sox starter Shane Smith in the sixth inning and a solo home run against Bryse Wilson in the ninth. Smith (0-1) limited Boston to two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Giants 5, Yankees 4

Jung Hoo Lee hit two homers and drove in four runs as visiting San Francisco came back to earn the win over New York on Sunday afternoon and claim the franchise’s first series win at Yankee Stadium.

Lee capped his first career multi-homer game with a three-run shot off Yankees starter Carlos Rodon in the sixth to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. Giants starter Logan Webb (2-0) settled down after a rocky start to allow three runs on five hits in five innings. Ryan Walker threw a perfect ninth for the save.

Rodon (1-3) allowed four runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out eight and walked three. Jazz Chisholm Jr. snapped an 0-for-24 streak by homering in the eighth to pull the Yankees within 5-4.

Reds 4, Pirates 0

Hunter Greene threw seven shutout innings and retired the final 17 batters he faced, while Santiago Espinal went 2-for-4 and broke a scoreless tie to lead Cincinnati to a win and a three-game sweep of visiting Pittsburgh.

Greene (2-1) struck out eight and walked one while allowing just two hits Sunday. He extended his scoreless innings to 19, lowered his ERA to 0.98 and earned his first career win against the Pirates.

Espinal broke a scoreless tie in the third when he served a soft line drive to right-center to score Austin Wynns and TJ Friedl with the first two runs off Pittsburgh starter Carmen Mlodzinski (1-2). The right-hander was charged with four runs and five hits over 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.

Royals 4, Guardians 2

Cole Ragans struck out 10 over a career-best 7 2/3 innings and Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer as visiting Kansas City salvaged the finale of its three-game series with Cleveland.

Ragans (1-0) retired 18 of the last 19 batters he faced and didn’t issue a walk. He joined Kevin Appier (1996) as the only pitchers in Royals history to strike out 10-plus in three straight starts. Maikel Garcia went 3-for-4 with a two-run double and Kyle Isbel also had three hits and scored a run.

Daniel Schneemann doubled and drove in a run for Cleveland, which had a five-game win streak snapped. Ben Lively (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out five.

Mariners 3, Rangers 1

Cal Raleigh homered for a third consecutive game since switching to a “torpedo” bat as host Seattle completed a three-game sweep of American League West rival Texas.

The Mariners won their fourth straight and went 5-1 on a six-game homestand against division rivals Houston and Texas. Seattle ace Logan Gilbert (1-1) earned his first win, allowing one run on three hits over five innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts. Seattle reliever Andres Munoz struck out a pair in the ninth to earn his sixth save.

Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (1-2) took the loss. He gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits in five-plus innings, with no walks and three strikeouts. Dustin Harris hits first homer of the season for Texas’ lone run.

Marlins 11, Nationals 4

Matt Mervis slugged a three-run, pinch-hit home run as host Miami defeated Washington to take two out of three in the series.

Mervis slugged a 411-foot homer in the seventh to push the Marlins’ lead to 7-3. Kyle Stowers went 3-for-5 with three runs and a two-run double in the Marlins’ four-run eighth. Xavier Edwards extended his hitting streak to seven games and owns a .385 average (10 of 26) during that span.

Marlins starter Cal Quantrill allowed three runs on seven hits and five walks in five innings before Ronny Henriquez (1-0) pitched a perfect sixth to get the win. Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore (1-2) struck out seven in six innings, but allowed four runs to spike his ERA from 2.65 to 3.52. Keibert Ruiz, Luis Garcia Jr. and Jacob Young posted two hits apiece.

Rays 8, Braves 3

Junior Caminero went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and Joe Boyle threw five no-hit innings as Tampa Bay never trailed against visiting Atlanta.

Boyle (1-0) retired the first 13 hitters he faced before allowing two runs — both unearned — while striking out seven and walking two. Yandy Diaz also homered for Tampa Bay, which took two of three from Atlanta.

Chris Sale (0-2) allowed six hits on four runs (three earned) over 4 1/3 innings while striking out seven and walking three. Ozzie Albies tallied a pair of hits and an RBI for Atlanta, which dropped its 11th game in 15 tries to begin the season.

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 6

Jeff Hoffman blanked Baltimore in the ninth and 10th innings to help visiting Toronto finish off its comeback victory and earn a split of the rain-shortened two-game series.

Hoffman (2-0) struck out back-to-back batters with the tying run on third base in the 10th inning to end the game. In the top of the 10th, Myles Straw beat out a slow roller to third off Matt Bowman (0-1) with runners on the corners and one out to give the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead.

Ernie Clement went 4-for-5 and scored twice, Alejandro Kirk homered, doubled and drove in two and Andres Gimenez had two hits and scored two runs for the Blue Jays. Ryan Mountcastle and Tyler O’Neill homered and Gunnar Henderson went 3-for-5 and scored two runs in the leadoff spot for the Orioles.

Cardinals 7, Phillies 0

Willson Contreras and Jordan Walker hit two-run homers to power host St. Louis past Philadelphia.

Nolan Arenado scored twice and drove in two runs as the Cardinals won their first series against the Phillies since the 2017 season. Matthew Liberatore (1-1) limited the Phillies to three hits in his six innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Phillies starter Zack Wheeler (1-1) allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked one. Bryce Harper provided one of the Phillies’ three singles and stole his fourth base of the year.

Astros 7, Angels 3

Hayden Wesneski recorded his first double-digit strikeout game and Isaac Paredes homered for the third time in as many games as host Houston claimed the rubber match of a three-game series against Los Angeles.

Wesneski (1-1) produced a quality start by allowing three runs on five hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings. The Angels socked three solo homers off Wesneski, who negated those long balls by completing his second consecutive start without issuing a free pass. Taylor Ward, Nolan Schanuel and Jorge Soler went deep for Los Angeles.

Following RBI singles from Cam Smith and Mauricio Dubon, Paredes registered the decisive blow in the bottom of the second. Paredes lined an elevated four-seam fastball from Angels starter Kyle Hendricks (0-1) into the left field seats for his third home run of the season and a 5-2 lead.

Mets 8, Athletics 0

Kodai Senga tossed seven scoreless innings and earned the win as New York beat the Athletics in the rubber game of a three-game interleague series in Sacramento, Calif.

Senga (2-1) gave up four hits and walked two while striking out four in the longest outing this season by a Mets pitcher and the longest start by Senga since Sept. 1, 2023. A.J. Minter and Max Kranick finished the Mets’ third shutout of the season.

Luis Torrens had three hits and two RBIs for the Mets, who have won eight of 10. Former Mets pitcher Luis Severino (0-3) took the defeat for the Athletics, who have lost five of seven overall and are 2-7 at their new Sacramento home.

Twins 5, Tigers 1

Byron Buxton homered, doubled and scored twice as Minnesota salvaged the finale of a three-game series by topping Detroit in Minneapolis.

Edouard Julien also hit a solo homer for the Twins while Ty France had two hits and an RBI. Minnesota starter Simeon Woods Richardson (1-1) gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Louis Varland, Cole Sands, Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran each tossed an inning of scoreless relief.

Spencer Torkelson had a solo homer for the Tigers. Casey Mize (2-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

CUBS LHP JUSTIN STEELE NEEDS ELBOW SURGERY, DONE FOR YEAR

Chicago Cubs ace left-hander Justin Steele will have reconstructive elbow surgery and miss the rest of the season, manager Craig Counsell said Sunday.

It was not yet known if Steele would need full Tommy John surgery or just a partial repair, according to ESPN.

Steele, 29, is just two years removed from being an All-Star selection and finishing fifth in National League Cy Young Award voting in 2023, when he went 16-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 30 starts.

Steele was 3-1 through four starts this season, with a 4.76 ERA and a major league-leading five home runs allowed through 22 2/3 innings. His most recent outing saw him toss seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts and just three hits.

KYLE LARSON DOMINATES AT BRISTOL FOR SECOND WIN OF 2025

Kyle Larson had the field covered for the second straight time at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, leading 411 of 500 laps to win the Food City 500 NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday in Bristol, Tenn.

In the ninth race of 2025, Larson started third and dominated the field after swiping the lead from polesitter Alex Bowman on Lap 40.

He beat Denny Hamlin, seeking a third straight win, by 2.25 seconds for his second victory of 2025 and 31st overall.

Larson led 462 laps last September to win the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol.

The No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports driver won for the third time at BMS, all occurring in the past six races, in a race that featured just three cautions and one multi-car incident — Shane van Gisbergen and Cody Ware tangling within the first 200 laps.

Ty Gibbs, Chase Briscoe and Ryan Blaney comprised the top five.

Xfinity Series racer Jesse Love made his Cup debut in Richard Childress Racing’s No. 33 Chevrolet. The Californian qualified 19th and finished 31st.

Bowman paced the first 39 times around the 0.533-mile speedway, but Larson, who won Saturday’s Xfinity race, roared past his teammate and pulled away. Meanwhile, Hamlin moved up to second in a fast Stage 1.

Larson won the 125-lap segment, but it took a hard battle with Ryan Preece’s No. 60 — the final car on the lead lap — to get to the checkers, leaving just 23 cars on the same lap with Larson. Hamlin, Justin Haley, Bowman and Carson Hocevar completed positions second to fifth, respectively.

van Gisbergen got into Ware for the second caution, but the mishaps continued on pit road. While leaving his pit, John Hunter Nemechek’s No. 42 lost a tire, which traveled down and struck Daniel Suarez’s No. 99 during service, and Suarez’s crew let an old tire roll into the pit in front of them. Both teams received penalties.

Larson had them covered again on Lap 250 as Stage 2 ended, with Bowman, Christopher Bell, Hocevar and Hamlin getting chunks of bonus points.

Concern grew in the Hendrick Motorsports camp when Bowman’s No. 48 began billowing blue smoke around Lap 300. He retired it on Lap 352 and finished 37th.

KYLE KIRKWOOD TOPS ALEX PALOU TO WIN GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH

Kyle Kirkwood doused Alex Palou’s red-hot run to start the season by winning the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday in Long Beach, Calif.

Kirkwood started from pole position and led 46 out of 90 laps, fending off Palou all the while. The 26-year-old from Florida grabbed the checkers 2.6859 seconds ahead of the Spaniard, who won back-to-back races at St. Petersburg, Fla., and Thermal, Calif., to kick off 2025.

The race did not feature any caution periods, so Kirkwood and his No. 27 Honda had to stick to a strict strategy to defend first place.

“We controlled the race from — even from practice, right? We felt like we were in control,” Kirkwood said. “Really good qualifying, amazing race, amazing strategy. But it was just execution all across the board is what won us that race here today, because if Palou was in front he would have beat us for sure. This was a track position race here today without any yellows.”

Palou, the defending IndyCar Series champion, said he “absolutely” felt happy with two wins and a second to start the year.

“You never feel amazing when you finish second, but honestly, the 27 car, Kyle, they were amazing all weekend, super fast,” Palou said. “I tried, I tried my chances but we couldn’t really make it work. Had a really bad start on my side and that kind of put us in the back foot.”

It was Kirkwood’s third career IndyCar title, his second at Long Beach and his first win since August 2023.

“This is a good one. It’s been a long time. I had a drought last year of no wins and this is huge for me, huge for my morale, huge for the 27 crew, huge for Honda,” Kirkwood said.

Christian Lundgaard of Denmark, who led 26 laps, placed third, followed by Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist and Australia’s Will Power.

INDIANS RALLY LATE IN SERIES FINALE FOR EXTRA-INNINGS WIN OVER BATS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Indianapolis Indians defeated the Louisville Bats, 6-5, in 10 innings to split this week’s six-game series. A four-run rally in the eighth inning helped force extras and two runs in the 10th frame sealed the win.

Liover Peguero went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI, one run scored and one stolen base in the win. He reached base safely for the 10th consecutive game and has hits in seven straight contests. Darick Hall posted his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a walk, including a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th frame. He has hits in five straight games after failing to record a hit through his first four contests.

The Indians (5-7) plated a pair of runs in the extra frame. Hall’s RBI blooper to center field gave them a 5-4 advantage and it was followed by a run-scoring double play hit into by Matt Gorski. Bats (8-7) reliever Alan Busenitz (L, 1-2) allowed two runs on three hits en route to his second loss of the campaign.

Malcom Nuñez led off the top of the 10th inning with a double. Ivan Johnson switched from left field to right field with defensive changes after the ninth. When immediately tested at the new position, Johnson lost the ball in the sun on a fly ball Nuñez lofted to right field. The extra-base knock put runners at second and third with no outs to begin the frame, setting up Hall and Gorski’s go-ahead plays.

Isaac Mattson (W, 2-0) tossed 2.0 innings, including the 10th frame, to close out the game. Edwin Ríos hit a game-tying opposite field home run off the left field foul pole in the ninth inning off Mattson. Rece Hinds hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning off Mattson to cut the deficit to one run again, 6-5. After issuing a walk to put the tying run in scoring position, Mattson recovered by retiring three consecutive batters to end the game.

The Bats struck first when Johnson hit a two-run home run off starter Bubba Chandler in the fourth inning. Chandler tossed 4.0 innings with two runs, two hits and six strikeouts. Bats right-hander Chase Petty dueled Chandler with 5.0 shutout innings.

After being shut out through the first seven innings of the game, the Indians offense erupted for four runs in the eighth inning. After Ji Hwan Bae walked to lead off the inning, Nick Solak put the Indians on the board, 2-1, with an RBI double. With the next two batters retired, Indy posted three more runs in a two-out rally. Gorski tied the game with his fourth double of the year, Peguero gave the Indians a 3-2 lead with an RBI single and the lead was extended 4-2 when he later scored on a fielding error by Louisville’s Will Benson.

The Bats cut the deficit, 4-3, by manufacturing a run in the eighth inning. Rece Hinds led off the inning with a double and Tyler Callihan hit a single into the outfield grass to make it a one-run game. With one out in the ninth inning, Edwin Ríos knotted the game. Hinds drove in the Bats fifth run with an RBI single in the 10th inning as their comeback fell just short.

The Indians resume play on Tuesday, April 15 at Victory Field, opening a six-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens at 6:05 PM. No starting pitchers have been named at this time.

INDY FUEL

FUEL EARN POINT IN OVERTIME BATTLE WITH WALLEYE

TOLEDO– The Fuel finished the regular season in Toledo with a matchup against the Walleye, who they will meet again in the first round of the playoffs next week. After forcing overtime, the Fuel ultimately fell 4-3 to the Walleye.

1ST PERIOD

Darian Pilon took a roughing penalty at 2:55 to give the Fuel the first power play of the game, however Toledo killed it off.

Indy steadily outshot Toledo early in the game and it paid off with a goal by Ethan Manderville at 17:48 to give the Fuel an early 1-0 lead. Ty Farmer and Owen Robinson had the two assists on that goal.

By the end of the first period, Indy was outshooting Toledo 13-10.

2ND PERIOD

At 2:09, things got chippy between these two teams. A small scuffle landed Colin Bilek and Darby Llewellyn in the penalty box for roughing, along with Toledo’s Billy Moskal.

The Fuel went to the 4-on-3 penalty kill after that but killed off the two minutes.

At 8:03, Dylan Moulton scored for Toledo to make it 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Indy’s leading scorer Nathan Burke gave it right back with a goal assisted by Bryan Lemos.

With the lone assist on Burke’s goal, Lemos became the Fuel franchise leader in assists with 124, passing Alex Wideman who previously held the record.

Jesse Tucker and Nolan Moyle each got a double minor penalty for roughing at 12:52 after some pushing and shoving.

Cole Gallant scored for Toledo at 15:04 to tie the game again, 2-2.

At 17:43, Indy’s Ty Farmer took a tripping penalty which gave the Walleye a power play chance late in the second frame.

With less than one second left in the second period, Darby Llewellyn took a cross checking penalty that would carry over into the third period.

Toledo bounced back and outshot the Fuel 15-9 that period.

3RD PERIOD

Matus Spodniak and Toledo’s Colin Swoyer each got two minutes for roughing at 13:43.

With two minutes to go in the third period, Owen Robinson scored to tie the game again and sent these two teams to overtime in the final regular season game of the year. Lemos and Farmer had the assists on that goal.

OVER TIME

Just 52 seconds into the overtime period, Lewandowski scored his second goal of the game and 28th of the season to win it for Toledo.

These two teams will meet again on Monday, April 21 in Toledo for the first game of the playoffs.

INDIANA BASEBALL

WEEKEND FINALE GETS AWAY

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Indiana Baseball team (20-16, 10-8 B1G) had a chance to win its first Big Ten road series of the year but never got off the ground on Sunday (April 13) afternoon. Illinois jumped all over IU’s pitching staff enroute to a dominant 15-1 run-rule victory in the weekend rubber match.

After holding the Fighting Illini to just seven runs in the first two games, IU’s pitching staff fell apart on Sunday. Redshirt senior Gavin Seebold recorded just four outs while allowing eight runs – all earned. Redshirt junior lefty Grant Holderfield tried to keep the Hoosiers alive but the offense from the home team was too much.

IU missed an early chance to crack into Illinois starter Regan Hall. The Hoosiers had two runners on with one out in the first inning but junior second baseman Tyler Cerny grounded into a double play to end the threat. From there, IU’s offense didn’t offer much against the southpaw. It finished the game with just four hits and one run.

Graduate student outfielder Tyler DeMartino recorded IU’s only run of the ballgame. He pinch hit in the seventh and clubbed a solo home run over the wall in left field. It was the first hit as a Hoosier for the longtime collegiate veteran. It also kept IU from being shutout for the first time since opening weekend (vs. Oregon State).

The Hoosiers will return to Bart Kaufman Field on Tuesday (April 15) for the first of four home games next weekend. Maryland will visit Bloomington next weekend (April 18-20) for the final Big Ten home series of April. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:00 p.m. ET on B1G+.

All-Time Series: Arizona State leads 1-0

Previous Meeting: ASU 15, Purdue 5 (February 2015 in Phoenix)

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball continues its midweek schedule with the first-ever Monday game at Alexander Field, hosting Arizona State for the Boilermakers’ seventh game over the last 11 against a former member of the Pac-12 Conference.

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. ET. The $3 midweek deals on general admission tickets, hot dogs, beer, popcorn and nachos (presented by Indiana Packers) will be available.

Purdue has not played on a Monday since April 2021 and has not played a Monday home game since a May 2010 series finale vs. Michigan State at Lambert Field. However, the Boilermakers have won their last four Monday games dating back to 2015.

PURDUE’S MONDAY GAMES SINCE 2010

• April 2021 at Illinois – W, 20-6

• April 2021 at Michigan State – W, 8-2

• March 2017 at Cal State Northridge – W, 9-3

• May 2015 at Nebraska – W, 9-6

• March 2014 at San Diego State – L, 6-5 (10 Innings)

• May 2010 vs. Michigan State – L, 5-4 (at Lambert Field)

• March 2010 vs. West Virginia – L, 18-14 (in Clearwater, Fla.)

Purdue did have Monday home games scheduled in April 2022 vs. Indiana and May 2023 vs. South Dakota State. Weather led to the change for the IU series three years ago and ultimately the finale was played as part of a Sunday doubleheader. The finale of the four-game weekend wraparound series vs. SDSU was canceled.

Arizona State was in Cincinnati over the weekend for a three-game Big 12 Conference series vs. the UC Bearcats (the home team took two of three). The Sun Devils were in search of a midweek game this week after Texas opted out of a previously agreed upon midweek matchup this week.

When the school year began, Purdue initially did not have a midweek game scheduled this week and had discussions with Penn State above playing a Thursday-to-Saturday series this coming weekend in Central Pennsylvania (primarily to be off on Easter). Instead, Purdue head coach Greg Goff capitalized on the opportunity to host ASU, a five-time College World Series champion currently coached by longtime big leaguer Willie Bloomquist (an ASU alum). Bloomquist played for the Sun Devils from 1997-99 under current Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy. Purdue all-time wins leader Doug Schreiber (head coach form 1999-2016) was an assistant coach at ASU during Bloomquist’s underclassman seasons.

Arizona State’s former Pac-12 rivals UCLA and Washington have both been on the Boilers’ schedule dating back to March 28. Purdue has not squared off against a current member of the Big 12 Conference since playing in a four-team tournament hosted by Kansas in March 2016. The Boilermakers did play a February 2019 series at Texas when the Longhorns were still part of the Big 12.

With Arizona State slated to start freshman lefty Easton Barrett on Monday, Purdue will face a southpaw starting pitcher for the first time since the March 15 series finale vs. UIC, a game that was ultimately rained out in the fourth inning.

The Boilermakers have not played four games in four consecutive days at home since a four-game series vs. Cal State Northridge during the final four days of the 2016 regular season. Purdue won two of three at home this past weekend against Rutgers and is 4-2 in midweek play this year.

Arizona State played eight of its first 12 games against Big Ten opponents, sweeping a season-opening series vs. Ohio State, splitting a two-game midweek set with UCLA and dropping two of three vs. Minnesota the weekend before Purdue played the Gophers inside U.S. Bank Stadium. The Sun Devils’ 5-4 midweek mark also includes a win vs. Austin Peay, a team scheduled to be the next first-time visitor to Alexander Field (April 22).

NOTRE DAME BASEBALL

IRISH FALL IN RUBBER MATCH TO EAGLES

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Notre Dame baseball team fell in a 4-3 final in the rubber match of the ACC series at Boston College on Sunday afternoon.

The Irish got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. Connor Hincks beat out a bunt single, and Brady Gumpf was hit by a pitch with two outs to put a pair of runners on base. Nick DeMarco powered a single to left field to drive in Hincks from second while putting runners on the corners. Jared Zimbardo added an infield single to plate Gumpf for the 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, but the Irish countered right away in the top of the third. Carson Tinney led off with a double off the left field wall and advanced to third on a grounder the other way. Parker Brzustewicz used a single to right field to drive in Tinney for a 3-1 lead. Connor Hincks was hit by a pitch, and a wild pitch allowed Brzustewicz and Hincks to move up 90 feet. Back-to-back outs, however, kept Notre Dame from adding to the lead as the game moved to the bottom of the third.

The Notre Dame defense made quick work of Boston College in the third. Brady Gumpf made a solid catch on the run in the right-center gap to record the first out. Estevan Moreno had a web gem at shortstop as the junior made the diving stop into the five-six hole, got to his feet, and fired the throw across in time to cut down the next batter for an out. Dylan Heine then dialed up his fourth strikeout of the day to sit down the side.

Brady Koester came on in relief in the fourth and struck out back-to-back batters to force the Eagles into stranding a runner on base. In the fifth, Massachusetts native Oisin Lee entered the game with bases loaded and dialed up a full-count strikeout to shut the door on the Eagles. The Irish used an unconventional double play in the bottom of the sixth as Jared Zimbardo collected a catch in center field and cut down the runner, who had hesitated momentarily, trying to tag up to third for the first two outs of the inning. The Eagles, however, pulled even with a single and a double to make it 3-3. Lee used a strikeout to close out the inning on the defensive end for Notre Dame.

The Irish defense retired the Eagles in order in the bottom of the eighth as the game still stood at 3-3 heading into the ninth. Notre Dame threatened in the top of the ninth. Bino Watters laced a two-out single to left and advanced on an error. Carson Tinney then drew a full-count walk to put a pair on base, but the Irish were unable to convert the two-out rally into runs.

Boston College started the bottom of the ninth with a lead-off single while an error allowed the runner to advance to second. The Eagles used a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third, and a deep-hit ball fell for a single as the game ended by the 4-3 final.

Ricky Reeth shouldered the decision on the mound in 2.1 innings of work with a strikeout. Dylan Heine had four strikeouts and went 3.1 with the start on the bump. Brady Koester struck out the two batters he faced for the Irish. Chase Van Ameyde went two-thirds of an innings on the hill, and Oisin Lee struck out two in 1.1 innings.

Connor Hincks was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run. Bino Watters added a pair of hits, and Carson Tinney was 1-for-3 with a double and a run to go along with a pair of walks. Jared Zimbardo, Parker Brzustewicz, and Nick DeMarco each had a hit and an RBI. Brady Gumpf scored once for the Irish.

Notre Dame (16-17, 4-14 ACC) are back home on Tuesday, April 15 when they host Valparaiso at 5:30 p.m. The team will be recognizing the Foundry Giants to celebrate the history of baseball in South Bend. All home regular season baseball games are free.

MUNCIE, Ind. – Bree Salenbien (Adrian, Mich./Lenawee Christian) returns to the midwest and will transfer to play for head coach Brady Sallee and the Ball State women’s basketball program this season after playing four years at Gonzaga.

“I have been a fan of Bree for a long time,” Sallee said. “When we saw her go into the portal, we were full steam ahead. Her length as a wing player is real. Her quick release from the 3-point line is elite along with a real ability to put the ball on the rim. Bree is a winner and will bring some big-time experience to our program next season. We are thrilled to welcome Bree to our program.”

A well-rounded shooter, Salenbien had a successful freshman campaign at Gonzaga appearing in 29 games while playing 260 minutes, scoring a season high 14 points on 71.4 percent shooting against Pacific. She logged 75 points and 40 rebounds as a true freshman while also earning West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week honors.

Salenbien suffered an injury at the end of her freshman season that sidelined her as a sophomore. She then returned to the lineup in 2023-24 showing promising numbers including an 89 percent shooting percentage from the charity stripe.

This year, Salenbien had a breakthrough performance, chipping in a personal best 17-point performance at Santa Clara while pulling down a season-high 10 rebounds at Washington State. Salenbien saw action in 21 games while entering the starting lineup on two separate occasions. She averaged 6.4 points per game and 3.0 rebounds.

Prior to Gonzaga, Salenbien was a four-star recruit at Lenawee Christian High School. She was ranked the seventh-best guard in the nation and 44th-ranked player in her class by ESPN, as she was the highest recruit to sign with the Bulldogs in history. Salenbien was the second-highest ranked recruit from the state of Michigan for the class of 2021.

Salenbien was named the AP Division IV Player of the Year each of the last four seasons. She led Lenawee Christian to back-to-back Division IV state championships in 2018 and 2019. She was selected as the Class D Player of the Year in 2018 and was selected USA Today Second Team Michigan in 2019.

Salenbien finished her high school career averaging 25.6 points per game, 11.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.7 blocks and 3.4 steals. Salenbien earned the Gatorade Player of the Year in Michigan while finishing her high school career with 2,059 points and 920 rebounds.

Salenbien becomes the seventh member of the Cardinals’ 2025-26 class joining Alba Caballero (Ciudad Real, Spain), Zhen Verburgt (Hemiskem, Belgium), Giorgia Gorini (Genova, Italy), Aniss Tagayi (Montpellier, Hérault, France), Karsyn Norman (Bedford, Ind./Bedford North Lawrence) and Brooke Winchester (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community High School).

DRISCOLL & GALLAGHER LEAD WOMEN’S GOLF IN FINAL ROUND AT SCARLET COURSE

COLUMBUS, Ohio – – Led by solid rounds from juniors Jasmine Driscoll and Sarah Gallagher, the Ball State women’s golf team closed play in the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational with its lowest team round of the tournament Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals finished the final round at +17 (305), shaving one stroke off Saturday’s second-round effort, to finish tied for sixth overall among the 13-team field at +62 (926).

“We had it rolling early today, we just let some slip coming down the stretch,” head coach Cameron Andry said. “But there were a lot of positives to take away from this weekend. I like where we are heading into the MAC championship next week!

It was a solid overall effort on a tough Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club in an event won by 17th-ranked Ohio State at +2 (866). No. 25 Michigan State finished second overall at +13 (877), while Mid-American Conference rival Kent State took third at +16 (880).

In her final tour of the challenging par-72, 6,319-yard Scarlett Course, Driscoll turned in Ball State’s lowest round of the tournament at E (72). She started her day with back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight, while adding two more on holes 12 and 18.

Driscoll played the back nine at -1 (35) Sunday, which helped her finish the tournament tied for 20th among the 69-player field at +13 (229).

Gallagher also finished tied for 20th overall at +13 (229) after firing her best round of the event Sunday at +1 (73). Starting on hole six, Gallagher birdied three of her first nine holes, while adding five pars in the stretch to also shoot -1 (35) in the course’s back nine.

Driscoll would finish the two-day event tied for 17th among the field with six total birdies, as would teammates senior Sabrina Langerak and sophomore Jenna Estravillo. Gallagher, who tallied five total birdies over the 54-hole event, led the Cardinals with 32 total pars while Driscoll registered 31.

Langerak followed her +1 (73) from the second round with a +7 (79) Sunday. Her final round included three birdies and seven pars, helping her finish third on the squad with 30 pars on the weekend.

JJ Gregston would get off to a solid start Sunday with three birdies over her first eight holes and finished the round at +9 (81). Estravillo also carded a +9 (81) Sunday, with her round including a birdie on 18 and eight holes played at par.

“Jasmine and Sarah played really good rounds today,” Andry added. “Sabrina and JJ both had some good rounds going but made some mistakes coming in.”

BASEBALL SWEEPS NORTHERN ILLINOIS AFTER SUNDAY OFFENSIVE OUTBURST

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team scored in each of the first six innings on its way to a 14-4 win against Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Shebek Stadium.

The Cardinals (26-11, 13-2 Mid-American Conference) secured the series sweep of the Huskies (12-22, 3-12 MAC) thanks to an offense led by Blake Bevis, who hit two home runs, and Nick Husovsky, who went 4-for-5 with five RBI.

Ball State got on the board first with three tallies in the opening frame on a two-run homer from Husovsky and a solo shot by Bevis to take the early 3-0 lead. After the visitors scored once in the top half of the second inning, Alex Richter doubled in Gavin Balius to put the Cardinals in front 4-1 at the end of the bottom half of the frame.

Leading 5-1 entering the fourth following an RBI grounder by Balius in the third, the hosts scored four times on run-scoring doubles by Husovsky and Garrett Arnold and a two-run home run from Bevis to extend the advantage to 9-1 after the fourth.

Husovsky tacked on a two-run double in the fifth frame, while Ty Davis hit a two-run blast in the sixth. Brett Griffiths ended the game in the eighth with a single that brought in John Colligan and clinched the run-rule win over the Huskies.

Bevis had the pair of homers, three runs scored and three RBI on the day. Husovsky ripped two doubles and finished a triple shy of the cycle.

Connor Hutchinson (2-2) worked 2.2 innings out of the bullpen to be credited with the win, and Drue Young struck out two in 2.1 shutout innings to finish out the game for the Cardinals, who are in first place in the conference standings through the first half of MAC play.

Northern’s starting pitcher Max Vaisvila (2-4) suffered the setback by surrendering five runs in 2.1 innings.

Ball State’s next game is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Butler in Indianapolis.

SYCAMORES RALLY LATE TO CLAIM SERIES WITH 12-8 SUNDAY WIN OVER SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State countered a three-run Southern Illinois rally in the top of the seventh inning with a four-run stretch of their own in the bottom of the frame as the Sycamores downed the visiting Salukis in the Sunday series finale at Bob Warn Field, 12-8.

The Indiana State (18-17, 7-5) win secured the Sycamores’ third Missouri Valley series victory of the 2025 season after topping the visiting Salukis (24-11, 7-5) in both Friday and Sunday’s contests in Terre Haute.

Southern Illinois rallied back from an 8-3 deficit after the fifth inning to bring the game all the way back to an 8-8 tie in the seventh. The Salukis loaded the bases with none out in the frame after Matt Schark scored on an Indiana State error making it an 8-6 ballgame. With Gavin Morris (5-3) on to relieve Zac Laird, Southern Illinois tied the game up at 8-8 as Michael Mylott’s sacrifice fly to center field was deep enough to score Gabe Petrucelli, while Cade Nelis roped an RBI single to right field scoring Lemm to even the game up.

The Sycamores rallied back in the bottom of the inning against SIU reliever Sam Frizzi (1-2). Jeremy Martinez started the inning with a single up the middle, and then took second on Mason Roell’s fielder’s choice as the toss from shortstop to second base went wide of the bag. A Jackson Taylor sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position and Thomas Emerich made it count with a two-run single through the left side of the infield putting Indiana State back on top 10-8.

Indiana State stretched the lead out as Carter Beck connected on a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Emerich. Nomar Garcia followed with a pop-fly RBI single that landed just behind the second baseman’s starting position on the infield as the defense was moving on Zack Henderson’s attempted stolen base. Henderson motored his way around the bases and scored giving the Sycamores a commanding 12-8 lead with two innings to play.

Morris made the lead stand as the senior right-hander kept the Salukis off the scoreboard aided by a Taylor sliding catch down the right field line in the eighth. Taylor secured the final out in the ninth snagging the line drive off Jaxon Holder’s bat in the ninth as Indiana State claimed the key MVC series win against the Salukis.

The Sycamores took the early 8-3 lead with a five-run fifth inning as Indiana State sent 10 batters to the plate and recorded five extra-base hits in the seven-hit inning. Henderson (RBI triple) and Carlos Pena (two-run home run) provided the key hits in the inning, while Emerich, Beck, and Garis all doubled in the frame.

All nine Sycamores in the starting lineup recorded hits on the day as Indiana State connected on 15 overall in the contest. Henderson was a career-best 4-for-4 from the plate with a double and triple, while Emerich, Pena, and Martinez added multi-hit games in the win.

Breyllin Suriel went the first 5.1 innings on the mound in taking the no-decision on Sunday. The right-hander allowed four hits and five runs (four earned), while striking out two. Carson Seeman and Laird worked the sixth, before Morris came in with 3.0 shutout innings allowing three hits with a pair of strikeouts to close out the contest.

John Lemm was 2-for-4 with a double and home run to power the SIU offense as the Salukis connected on 10 hits in the loss. Schark, Cade Nelis, and Tim Simay added multi-hit contests.

Frizzi took the loss on the mound allowing four hits and four runs (one earned), while striking out three over the final 2.0 innings. Meade Johnson went 4.0 innings in the start, while Tanner Gerdes and Jackson Payne worked the middle innings.

How They Scored

Southern Illinois took the 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on John Lemm’s solo home run to straightaway center field.

The Sycamores responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning with Keegan Garis scoring on Mason Roell’s RBI ground out, while Jackson Taylor’s sacrifice fly was deep enough to bring home Jeremy Martinez and put Indiana State ahead 2-1.

The Sycamores added to the lead in the top of the third inning as Carlos Pena’s line drive single to right field scored Zack Henderson making it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Salukis tied it up in the top of the fourth as Lemm’s double down the right field line scored Gabe Petrucelli, while Tim Simay’s single up the middle brought home Lemm to even the score at 3-3.

Indiana State broke it open with a five-run fifth inning as the Sycamores sent 10 batters to the plate. Thomas Emerich opened the inning with a double to left field and Henderson followed with an RBI triple to left center putting the Sycamores back ahead 4-3.

Carter Beck followed with an RBI double to right center, before Carlos Pena launched a two-run home run into the wind and left of the scoreboard in right center stretching the lead to 7-3.

Roell capped the fifth inning scoring with an RBI infield single up the middle scoring Keegan Garis from second on the play to make it an 8-3 Sycamore lead.

The Salukis battled back with two runs in the sixth as Cade Nelis’ RBI single through the left side brought home Simay. Two batters later, Cecil Lofton scored on an Indiana State error, but Michael Mylott was thrown out at the plate to keep it an 8-5 Sycamore lead.

SIU tied the game up with a three-run seventh inning with Schark scoring on an error, Petrucelli coming across on Mylott’s sacrifice fly, and Lemm scoring on Nelis’ RBI single to even it up at 8-8.

Indiana State responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh sparked by Emerich’s two-run single scoring Roell and Martinez. Beck followed two batters later with an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Emerich, before Garcia put a cap on the game with a two-out RBI single to shallow right allowing Henderson to score from first base on the play to provide the final 12-8 scoring margin.

PURDUE FT. WAYNE SOFTBALL

MASTODON SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AT OAKLAND

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Bailey Manos was a single short of hitting for the cycle in game two, but the junior led Purdue Fort Wayne to a pair of wins at Oakland on Sunday (April 13).

With her four-hit day, Manos and Grace Hollopeter are now separated by just one hit in their careers. Manos has 129 and Hollopeter has 130, which rank Nos. 10 and 11 in program history for a career.

GAME 1: Purdue Fort Wayne 4, Oakland 3 (8 innings)

Purdue Fort Wayne had a come-from-behind victory over Oakland in the second game of the weekend and eventually won 4-3 in the eighth inning thanks to a solo home run from Alexa Carter.

Down 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Brooke Lickey doubled to left center to get the Mastodons’ half inning started. Addison Zimpleman moved her across to third with a sacrifice bunt, then Gwen McMenemy laid down a bunt as well. After a throw to the pitcher, Lickey broke for home and scored.

The ‘Dons shut down OU in the seventh, stranding a runner at first.

With two outs in the eighth, Carter battled through a monstrous at bat that spanned 10 pitches. On the 10th, she had what looked like a line drive to right center field and cleared the outfield wall. A half inning later, the Golden Grizzlies left a runner and their chance to extend the game on third base.

In the fourth, Tori Countryman had a sac fly and Faith McClain had an RBI single that gave the ‘Dons a 2-1 lead. Oakland got the lead back in its next trip to bat.

Alanah Jones picked up her ninth win of the season in 8.0 innings pitched. She had three strikeouts. Kenna Bommarito took the loss for the Golden Grizzlies after pitching 2.0 out of the bullpen.

GAME 2: Purdue Fort Wayne 8, Oakland 1

Game two of the doubleheader was the Manos show from the start. On the second pitch of the game, Manos popped up to shallow left field and thanks to a collision of the Golden Grizzly defense, she ran all the way around the bases for an inside the park home run.

OU got a run in their portion of the first inning, but that was all Gracie Brinkerhoff allowed all day. She finished with the win after giving up one earned run and six hits with three strikeouts.

Purdue Fort Wayne got a run in each of the third and fourth innings. Manos doubled in the third then zoomed all the way around to home when McKenna Minton grounded out to the shortstop. An inning later, Carter singled and Lickey followed with a bunt single. Countryman advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, then McClain had another RBI single.

In the fourth, the bats exploded for the ‘Dons. Manos started off with a triple then Minton followed with a triple of her own. Hollopeter doubled to bring Minton home and burn through Oakland’s starting pitcher, then Carter singled to score Hollopeter. Countryman finished off the four-run fifth with a sac fly to center field.

For good measure, Lickey scored in the seventh after McMenemy singled through the left side.

The Mastodons racked up 14 hits, which was their most in Horizon League play and tied for their season-high.

Bommarito suffered her second loss of the day after getting the start.

With the two wins, Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 12-18 and 8-4 in Horizon League play. Oakland fell to 12-22, 5-10 in league. The Mastodons will welcome Cleveland State to the Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Field on Tuesday (April 15) for a noon start.

EVANSVILLE BASEBALL

EIGHTH INNING PUTS ACES BASEBALL IN A HOLE IN SERIES FINALE AT ILLINOIS STATE

NORMAL, Ill. – The University of Evansville baseball team ended its series with the Illinois State Redbirds with a 14-4 loss.

The Purple Aces had a very competitive game against Illinois State through seven and a half innings as they took an early lead in the second and tied the game back up in the sixth. But the Redbirds took advantage of some late game miscues and free bases from UE in the eighth inning to sweep the series. At the plate, Evansville had eight total hits with freshman infielders Jake McGhee (Fenton, Mo. / Christian Brothers Academy) and Mason McCue (Bourbonnais, Ill. / Bishop McNamara HS) having two hits each.

“A very challenging eighth inning on the mound for us, which is a let down,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll after the game. “We had multiple opportunities that we couldn’t cash in on. You have to give credit to Illinois State for playing great baseball all weekend.”

It was a fast first inning as both pitchers faced the minimum number of batters at Duffy Bass Field. Starter Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario) got the first strikeout of the afternoon to close out the inning, getting the Redbirds and the MVC’s best batter Daniel Pacella down swinging. The Aces offense got going in the second inning with back-to-back hits from designated hitter Brodie Peart (Markham, Ontario) and first baseman McGhee.

UE then loaded the bases as right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) was hit by a pitch. Evansville walked in a run to take the early lead as shortstop Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) went to first and Peart scored the first run of the game. Illinois State was able to answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game.

The Redbirds took the lead in the third inning with three runs as the Aces again had to fight back from behind on Sunday. UE got out of the third thanks to a long throw from left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) to get both the fly out and the second out at home. Both teams went down in order in the fourth to quickly move to the fifth inning.

Evansville had heads up batting in the top of the fifth as singles from second baseman McCue and Rumsey had two on with one out. The Aces then loaded the bases as Illinois State’s starting pitcher Tyler Chadwick walked third baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley). With the bases loaded, Peart wore a hit by pitch to bring in a second run for UE.

But Evansville’s big offensive inning was the top of the sixth. The Aces began the inning with Taubert taking first on his second hit-by-pitch of the day. UE followed up with back-to-back singles from McConnell and McCue, scoring Taubert to make it a one-run game. Only three at-bats later Evansville tied the game up on an RBI groundout from Longmeier to score McConnell.

The Aces took down the Redbirds in order in the bottom of the sixth to move into the final third of the game. UE almost took the lead in the top of the seventh as McGhee hit a lead-off single and made his way to third base with only one out on the board. But Evansville’s next two batters struck out, stranding McGhee as the go-ahead run at third.

Illinois State was able to take advantage of a fielding error on a double to go back in front by a run in the bottom of the seventh.  The Redbirds took over the game in the bottom of the eighth as the Aces defense and pitching fell apart. Illinois State scored nine runs in the inning to end the game early with the 14-4 final score.

UE returns home to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium next weekend. Evansville will have a rematch of the 2024 MVC Tournament Championship game as Indiana State comes to town for a three-game series. The Aces won’t play a midweek game in anticipation of the series over Eastern weekend. UE hits the field on Thursday, April 17 for a 6 p.m. first pitch against the Sycamores.

SOUTHERN INDIANA SOFTBALL

EAGLES FALL TO PANTHERS IN SUNDAY DOUBLEHEADER

CHARLESTON, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana Softball dropped a pair of games against Eastern Illinois University on Sunday, falling 3-1 in an eight-inning pitcher’s duel before a 9-1 setback in six innings to close out the weekend and giving the Panthers a series sweep.

Following Sunday’s results, Eastern Illinois (22-17, 14-3 OVC) maintained its first-place position in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, while Southern Indiana (10-21, 7-9 OVC) stands in sixth.

The day began in the first game with a stingy pitching battle between USI freshman pitcher Kylie Witthaus and Eastern Illinois junior pitcher Karlie McKenzie. The two hurlers combined to keep the game scoreless through four and a half innings. The Panthers would strike first on the scoreboard by scratching across a run in the bottom of the fifth.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of Eastern Illinois going to the seventh inning with Southern Indiana still in search of its first hit off of McKenzie. The Screaming Eagles broke up the no-hit bid on a one-out infield single by freshman Jordan Mackey. Then USI got onto the scoreboard in the next at-bat when sophomore outfielder Kate Satkoski doubled down the left-field line to score senior infielder Whitley Hunter and tie the game, 1-1.

Witthaus pitched around some trouble in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. However, Eastern Illinois won in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run walk-off home run by sophomore catcher Sophia Olman.

Witthaus (4-7) pitched another quality start in conference play, striking out a career-high seven batters in the complete game.

McKenzie (7-3) also went the distance and allowed only one run off three hits with six strikeouts in the win for the Panthers.

Eastern Illinois carried the momentum into game two of the afternoon, scoring two quick runs in the home half of the first inning. Despite an RBI single by Hunter in the top of the third, the Panthers crossed home plate in each of the first three innings to lead 4-1 after three.

Southern Indiana had a chance to respond with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the fifth inning, but USI was kept off the scoreboard. The Panthers went on to score twice more in the bottom of the fifth and three times in the bottom of the sixth to essentially walk off again in six innings via the run rule.

USI totaled five hits in game two. Hunter had the RBI knock and junior outfielder Caroline Stapleton had a hit and a run scored. Senior outfielder Kennedy Nalley, who had the other USI hit in game one, tallied another hit in game two.

Senior pitcher Josie Newman (6-13) was dealt the loss, giving up nine runs – five earned – with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.

Eastern Illinois’ sophomore pitcher McKenzie Oslanzi (12-10) tossed a complete game, surrendering an unearned run and striking out two.

The Screaming Eagles will return home to USI Softball Field later in the coming week for a three-game series against the University of Tennessee at Martin. Due to the Easter holiday next Sunday, the series begins Friday with a Noon doubleheader before wrapping up on Saturday with the series finale at Noon. The series is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+ and heard on The Spin 95.7 FM. Additional coverage and information can be found at usiscreamingeagles.com.

VALPO WOMEN’S TENNIS

SILVA CONTINUES WINNING STREAK AS BEACONS DROP CLIFFHANGER TO BRAVES

The Valparaiso University tennis team fell in a tight 4-3 battle with Bradley on Sunday morning indoors at The Court of Northwest Indiana in Valpo. Junior Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) extended her singles winning streak to four in a match where Valpo captured three of the five singles showdowns. Both teams had only five healthy players, so the two teams used an unusual format with doubles as separate decisions instead of doubles as one decision since only five singles matches and two doubles matches were played.

How It Happened

Both doubles matches came down to the wire, with Bradley recording 6-4 victories at both No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Silva was the first singles player off the court, dropping only two games while rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Anna Belogliadova at the No. 1 Singles spot.

Valpo leveled the team score at 2-2 when Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School) became the next player to polish off a singles win, downing Compassion Tsai 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

The Braves secured straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the team victory.

Sophomore Lillian Kelly (Fullerton, Calif.  / Fullerton Union) continued a solid conference campaign with a straight-set win over Madi Rogers at No. 5 in the final match to finish. She prevailed 6-1 in the opening set before winning a tighter second set on a tiebreak 7-6(3).

Inside the Match

Valpo fell to 0-4 in 4-3 matches this season. Three of the team’s seven conference setbacks have come by the slimmest of margins despite the team playing shorthanded and defaulting at No. 6 Singles and No. 2 Doubles in every conference match (with the exception of Sunday against Bradley, when both teams were shorthanded).

Silva followed up her Saturday win over the reigning MVC Newcomer of the Year with another win at the top singles spot on Sunday. She has won four consecutive matches and put together back-to-back unbeaten weekends of conference action.

Tuesday, April 15, 4:30 p.m. CT / 5:30 p.m. ET – RHP Nick Baffa

Frank Eck Stadium (2,500) | Notre Dame, Ind.

Next Up in Valpo Baseball: The Valparaiso University baseball team will make the short trip to the South Bend area on Tuesday for the squad’s annual midweek matchup with Notre Dame. The Beacons will face a quick turnaround after Tuesday’s game as this weekend’s Missouri Valley Conference series starts on Thursday due to Sunday’s Easter holiday.

Last Time Out: The Beacons dropped all three games at first-place Missouri State this weekend, the team’s final Missouri Valley Conference visit to Springfield. A game-tying, ninth-inning home run by Aidan Thaxton leveled the score in Friday’s series opener, but Missouri State hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning. Connor Lockwood turned in another strong outing, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven over eight innings, and received no decision. Missouri State won the second game 10-5 and then took the finale 25-7 despite Valpo hitting a season-high four home runs, including two by Patrick Ilitch.

Following the Beacons: Tuesday’s game will air on ACC Network Extra. For links to live video and stats, visit ValpoAthletics.com. For in-game updates, follow @ValpoBaseball on X.

Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (210-354) is in his 12th season in charge of the program. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion.

A Look Back at 2024: Valpo finished 14-38 overall and 6-21 in Missouri Valley Conference play last season and hopes to return to the MVC Tournament field in 2025. Kaleb Hannahs earned Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors last season, while Kyle Schmack finished one home run shy of tying the program’s career and single-season records. The team launched 71 home runs, the second most in program history and most since 2001. Alex Ryan made an incredible leaping catch that was featured at No. 4 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays, robbing a grand slam as part of a 20-0 victory at UIC on April 28. The 2024 campaign also saw Valpo post a fielding percentage of .970 that ranked fourth in program history. The season also saw head coach Brian Schmack reach the 200-win threshold.

Series Notes: Valpo is 21-84 all-time against Notre Dame in this instate matchup that dates all the way back to 1958. Valpo fell 7-6 last season and will look to snap a 16-game head-to-head losing streak on Tuesday. Valpo’s most recent win was May 2, 2012, a 7-4 triumph.

In the Other Dugout – Notre Dame

Picked to finish 15th of 16 in the ACC preseason poll.
