WHEELER DEALS, SCHWARBER, HARPER, REALMUTO HOMER AND PHILLIES BEAT D-BACKS 6-1 FOR 3-2 NLCS LEAD

PHOENIX (AP) Kyle Schwarber got a hanging breaking ball at the top of the strike zone in the sixth inning and did what he does so well in the postseason, obliterate a baseball deep into the seats for another home run.

The formidable Philadelphia Phillies looked mortal for a couple days during a pair of frustrating one-run losses. Their response on Saturday night proved that they’re far from finished.

Zack Wheeler delivered another postseason gem with seven shutdown innings, Schwarber, Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmulto all homered and the Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 to take a 3-2 NL Championship Series lead.

“Everything was fantastic,” Schwarber said. “It was a great response. Obviously, didn’t work out the way we wanted last night, but it was great that we were able to turn the page and really put our focus and effort into this one.”

Philadelphia moved one win from its second straight World Series appearance, regaining control after wasting late leads in consecutive losses at Chase Field.

Bryson Stott hit an RBI single and Harper slid home in a collision with catcher Gabriel Moreno as part of a double steal that built a 2-0 lead in the first off Zac Gallen. It was part of a big game for the 30-year-old Harper, who had two hits, three runs, a diving defensive play and his long homer.

“He’s as good as they get,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “He might be the best I’ve been around, just watching him on a daily basis.”

Harper, who returned in May from Tommy John surgery, is batting .343 with five homers, eight RBIs and 12 walks in 11 postseason games.

“I just want to win. That’s it. Whatever that takes, whatever that’s going to be, whatever that’s going to look like,” he said. “That was a big game for us. Coming in here and getting one is huge. That’s a good team over there. We took advantage of everything we could.”

Schwarber’s homer was his fifth in the NLCS and 20th of his postseason career as the Philadelphia lineup roughed up Gallen for a second time this series. Schwarber’s sixth-inning drive traveled 461 feet over the swimming pool beyond the right-center fence, quieting a crowd of 47,897. Two batters later, Harper hit a 444-foot homer into the right-field seats.

Realmuto added a two-run homer in the eighth against Luis Frías for 6-1 lead.

The series resumes Monday in Philadelphia, where the Phillies are 6-0 this postseason with 17 homers.

Wheeler, a 33-year-old right-hander, gave up one run and five hits with a walk while striking out eight. He is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA in four postseason starts this year, striking out 34 and walking two in 26 innings.

“He gave us exactly what we needed,” Thomson said.

Philadelphia’s starting pitchers have a 1.48 ERA in this postseason with 67 strikeouts and just seven walks in 61 innings.

Gallen gave up four runs and six hits six innings, dropping to 2-2 with a 5.24 in four playoff outings. He allowed five runs over five innings in taking the Game 1 loss to Wheeler.

Alek Thomas homered in the seventh for the Diamondbacks, a day after his tying home run in the eighth sparked Arizona to a series-evening win. Thomas has a team record four homers this postseason.

Schwarber, batting .412 with five solo homers in the series, reached on an infield single starting the game and scored on Stott’s two-out single. Stott’s dash for second on a steal drew a throw from Moreno to second baseman Ketel Marte, who stepped in front of the base and made an errant return throw that bounced past Moreno.

Harper collided with Moreno at home plate, dazing the catcher, but who remained in the game. Umpires ruled Harper couldn’t have avoided the collision because Marte’s throw drew Moreno down the third-base line.

“We made some mistakes today,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “We didn’t capitalize in some key situations and that was the difference in the game.”

MASTER OF SLUG

Schwarber reached 20 postseason homers in 63 games, a record low. The prior mark was held by Houston’s Jose Altuve at 68 games.

RARE THEFT

Harper’s steal of home was the first in Phillies’ postseason history and just the 22nd in MLB postseason history. It was the ninth steal of home in since playoffs started in 1969 and the first since Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena in 2021.

LINEUP CHANGES

Pavin Smith went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in his first start of the postseason, batting him fifth as the designated hitter. Tommy Pham was benched after hitting 1 of 13 in the first four games of the NLCS. Smith entered 3 of 4 this postseason.

ROOF CLOSED

Temperatures hovered around 100 in Phoenix, so Chase Field’s retractable roof was closed for the third straight game. … 28-time Olympic swimming medalist Michael Phelps threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

UP NEXT

RHP Aaron Nola (3-0, 0.96 ERA postseason) starts Monday for the Phillies and RHP Merrill Kelly (1-1, 3.00 ERA) for the Diamondbacks.

ASTROS’ ABREU SUSPENDED 2 GAMES BY MLB, WHICH SAYS HE INTENTIONALLY THREW AT GARCÍA

HOUSTON (AP) Houston Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu was suspended for two games and fined Saturday by Major League Baseball, which said he intentionally threw at Adolis García of the Texas Rangers during Game 5 of the AL Championship Series.

MLB said all six umpires decided Abreu’s pitch was intentional. MLB said it “took into account the dangerous nature of the pitch and its potential impact on player safety.”

Abreu would start the suspension with Game 6 on Sunday unless he appeals. His pitch started a benches-clearing incident that led to a 12-minute delay before play resumed.

The suspension was announced by MLB senior vice president Michael Hill. An appeal would be heard by John McHale Jr., a special assistant to baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.

García and Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. were fined along with Texas pitcher Matt Bush. McCullers and Bush are being prohibited for sitting on their team benches for the rest of the series.

Houston manager Dusty Baker was fined for his actions following his ejection. Baker remained in the Astros dugout for six minutes before leaving for the clubhouse.

Baker was asked Saturday about his thought process in sitting back down in the dugout after being ejected.

“My thought process is I wasn’t ready to go because it shouldn’t have happened in the first place,” he said. “That was my thought process.”

He was then asked what the umpires said when they approached him in the dugout when he wouldn’t leave.

“Well, they didn’t say much,” he said. “They kind of just turned around and said: ‘He’s not leaving.’ Then they turned around and said they can’t start until I leave.”

Baker was asked about the incident.

“It happens,” he said. “And you don’t script it. It’s a spontaneous, combustible reaction that gets out of control. And most of us want to be under control. Most of us want to play ball. Most don’t want to box.”

Texas manager Bruce Bochy was asked if he thinks there will be carryover from the scuffle into Game 6.

“I don’t see really any of this happening again, to be honest,” he said.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

TOP 25 ROUNDUP: NO. 3 OHIO STATE AGAIN TOPS NO. 7 PENN STATE

Marvin Harrison Jr. had 162 receiving yards and a touchdown as No. 3 Ohio State held off No. 7 Penn State 20-12 in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday.

Harrison, who had 11 catches, had an 18-yard TD on a third-and-11 with 4:07 to play for a 20-6 lead to effectively put the game out of reach.

Penn State (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) pulled to within the final margin with 29 seconds left when Kaden Saunders had an 8-yard TD catch from Drew Allar. But Ohio State recovered the onside kick at its 47 and ran out the clock.

The Buckeyes (7-0, 4-0) have won seven straight and 11 of 12 vs. the Nittany Lions, who have not won in Columbus since 2011.

No. 6 Oklahoma 31, UCF 29

Dillon Gabriel threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns against his former school as the Sooners avoided an upset by the Knights in the Big 12 matchup in Norman, Okla.

The game came down to a failed two-point conversion try with 1:16 left after John Rhys Plumlee hit Javon Baker for a 12-yard touchdown to pull the Knights within two. UCF tried to pass the ball after a lateral on the conversion, but the Sooners snuffed it out to maintain the lead, then recovered the onside kick to put the game away.

Nic Anderson had five catches for 105 yards and two scores for Oklahoma (7-0, 4-0 Big 12), and Gabriel went 25 of 38 passing. Plumlee completed 16 of 30 passes for 248 yards and two scores, and Baker had five catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns for UCF (3-4, 0-4).

No. 2 Michigan 49, Michigan State 0

J.J. McCarthy passed for 287 yards and a career-high four touchdowns and the Wolverines crushed the in-state rival Spartans at East Lansing, Mich.

McCarthy completed 21 of 27 passes as the Wolverines defeated the Spartans for the second straight season. AJ Barner caught eight passes for 99 yards for Michigan (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten).

Katin Houser completed 12 of 22 passes for 101 yards and was picked off once for Michigan State (2-5, 0-4), which has dropped five straight games. Nate Carter was held to 36 yards on 17 carries. The Spartans were blanked by the Wolverines for the first time since 2000.

No. 4 Florida State 38, No. 1 Duke 20

Jordan Travis spearheaded two drives that resulted in fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Seminoles overcame the Blue Devils in Tallahassee, Fla.

Travis ran 2 yards to complete a 96-yard drive early in the fourth quarter and then threw 21 yards to Lawrance Toafili less than five minutes later to lift Florida State (7-0, 5-0 ACC).

Duke (5-2, 2-1) led at intermission but couldn’t get going in the second half. Quarterback Riley Leonard, who was injured in the waning seconds three weeks earlier in a loss to Notre Dame, was back in a starting role, but he didn’t have his normal impact and was replaced in the fourth quarter after he was shaken up.

No. 5 Washington 15, Arizona State 7

Mishael Powell returned an interception 89 yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Huskies sidestepped an upset bid by the Huskies in Seattle.

Powell’s return was the lone touchdown of the contest for high-powered Washington (7-0, 4-0 Pac-12), which committed four turnovers. Heisman Trophy frontrunner Michael Penix Jr. struggled much of the game and was 27-of-42 passing for 275 yards and two interceptions.

Cam Skattebo rushed for a touchdown and Trenton Bourguet completed 26 of 47 passes for 196 yards and the pivotal interception for the Sun Devils (1-6, 0-4), who dropped their sixth consecutive game.

No. 8 Texas 31, Houston 24

CJ Baxter ran 16 yards for the winning touchdown with 5:37 remaining as the Longhorns made the plays they needed down the stretch to outlast the host Cougars.

The Longhorns (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) dominated the game’s first 17-plus minutes when they roared to a 21-0 lead, but they sputtered thereafter with Houston (3-4, 1-3) tying the contest at 24-24 on Jack Martin’s 40-yard field goal halfway through the fourth quarter.

That set the stage for Baxter and his deciding scoring run as Texas ground out a 53-yard touchdown march that featured five runs and just one pass, a strategy dictated by an injury to quarterback Quinn Ewers on a hard hit on a scramble late in the third quarter.

No. 9 Oregon 38, Washington State 24

Bucky Irving rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on a reception as the Ducks rebounded from their lone loss of the season to outscore the Cougars in their Pac-12 game in Eugene, Ore.

Bo Nix, who broke the Football Bowl Subdivision record for a quarterback with his 54th career start, completed 18 of 25 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a score for the Ducks (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12), who lost 36-33 last week at Washington in a top-10 showdown. Oregon’s Jordan James added 103 yards rushing.

The Cougars (4-3, 1-3), who were ranked No. 13 earlier this month, suffered their third consecutive defeat. Washington State’s Cameron Ward was 34-of-48 passing for 438 yards and a touchdown. Lincoln Victor made a school-record 16 catches for 161 yards.

Virginia 31, No. 10 North Carolina 27

Mike Hollins rushed for three touchdowns as the Cavaliers shocked the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The unlikely victory for Virginia (2-5, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) gives the Cavaliers their first conference win since Oct. 20, 2022, when they topped Georgia Tech. It’s the first loss of the season for UNC (6-1, 3-1) and will hinder the Tar Heels’ hopes of a College Football Playoff berth.

Hollins rushed for 66 yards on 15 carries and caught one pass. Virginia quarterback Tony Muskett completed 20 of 30 passes for 208 yards with a score and an interception. UNC quarterback Drake Maye completed 24 of 48 passes for 347 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. He also rushed for a score.

No. 11 Alabama 34, No. 17 Tennessee 20

Jalen Milroe passed for two touchdowns, Jihaad Campbell returned a fumble for a score and the Crimson Tide overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to knock off the Volunteers in the high-powered Southeastern Conference matchup at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Jase McClellan rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries to help the Crimson Tide (7-1, 5-0 SEC) win their sixth consecutive game. Isaiah Bond and Jermaine Burton caught scoring passes and Chris Braswell had two sacks for Alabama, which scored 27 unanswered points in the second half.

Joe Milton III was 28-of-41 passing for 271 yards and two touchdowns and added 59 rushing yards for Tennessee (5-2, 2-2), which had a three-game winning streak halted. Squirrel White had 10 receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown, and McCallan Castles also had a scoring catch for the Volunteers.

No. 13 Ole Miss 28, Auburn 21

Jaxson Dart threw for 202 yards and rushed for two touchdowns as the Rebels pulled away in the fourth quarter for a SEC win over the host Tigers.

Dart snapped a 14-14 tie on the last play of the third quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run, capping a 90-yard drive. On their next possession, the Rebels (6-1, 3-1 SEC) marched 68 yards and took just over five minutes off the clock, and Quinshon Judkins powered up the middle for a 4-yard scoring run with 7:51 left in the game.

The Tigers (3-4, 0-4) got within a touchdown with 56 seconds remaining when Payton Thorne found Rivaldo Fairweather with an 8-yard touchdown pass. However, Dayton Wade recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the outcome and give Ole Miss just its second win in its last 10 visits to Jordan-Hare Stadium.

No. 14 Utah 34, No. 18 USC 32

Bryson Barnes went 14-of-23 passing for 235 yards with three touchdowns, and his 26-yard run set up Cole Becker’s game-winning, 38-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Utes over the Trojans in Los Angeles.

Utah (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) fell behind 32-31 with 1:46 remaining, moments after Zachariah Branch set up USC in the red zone with a 61-yard punt return.

USC (6-2, 4-1) scored on its first snap of the ensuing possession when Caleb Williams ran 11 yards for a touchdown. It was Williams’ first and only score of the night, as Utah limited the reigning Heisman Trophy winner to 256 yards on 24-of-34 passing and 27 rushing yards.

No. 19 LSU 62, Army 0

Jayden Daniels threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another as the Tigers rolled over the Black Knights in a nonconference game in Baton Rouge, La.

Daniels completed 11 of 15 passes for 279 yards, and Brian Thomas Jr. (122 receiving yards) and Malik Nabers (121) each caught two touchdown passes for LSU (6-2).

Kanye Udoh rushed for 108 yards for Army (2-5), which had just 193 total yards as it lost its fourth straight and second in a row by shutout. The Black Knights lost to Troy 19-0 a week earlier and have scored just 40 points during the losing streak.

No. 20 Missouri 34, South Carolina 12

Cody Schrader rushed for a career-high 159 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers continued their dominance of the Gamecocks with a victory in Columbia, Mo.

Brady Cook completed 14 of 24 passes for 198 yards, throwing one touchdown pass and running for another score as the Tigers (7-1, 3-1 SEC) beat the Gamecocks for the fifth straight time to retain the Mayor’s Cup.

Facing a consistently heavy rush, Spencer Rattler completed 23 of 40 passes for 217 yards and one interception for South Carolina (2-5, 1-4). The Tigers scored on four straight possessions, surging to a 24-0 lead before Mitch Jeter ended the Gamecocks’ drought with the first of his four field goals, a 51-yarder, in the final minute of the first half.

No. 22 Air Force 17, Navy 6

Zac Larrier threw the longest touchdown pass in program history as the Falcons beat the Midshipmen in Annapolis, Md.

Larrier connected with Dane Kinamon for a 94-yard score on the first play of the second quarter to provide the Falcons with all the offense they would need to improve to 7-0 for the first time since 1997. The Air Force defense took care of the rest, holding the Midshipmen (3-4) to just 124 yards of total offense. Alec Mock punctuated the impressive performance with an 18-yard pick-6 with 3:51 left in the game.

Navy was without senior quarterback Tai Lavatai (ribs) for the first three quarters. Lavatai came on for the fourth but couldn’t complete a comeback, throwing for 96 yards and a pair of interceptions on 13-for-23 passing. He did, however, break the shutout, connecting with Eli Heidenreich for a 10-yard TD with 50 seconds remaining.

No. 23 Tulane 35, North Texas 28

Michael Pratt threw three touchdown passes and ran for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter as the Green Wave downed the Mean Green in an American Athletic Conference game in New Orleans.

Pratt completed 15 of 21 passes for 194 yards and an interception and ran 19 yards for the winning points with 2:34 left in the game. Makhi Hughes finished with 121 rushing yards and a touchdown for Tulane (6-1, 3-0 AAC), which prevailed despite squandering a 21-0 halftime lead.

Chandler Rogers threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns on 35-of-51 passing for North Texas (3-4, 1-2).

Minnesota 12, No. 24 Iowa 10

Dragan Kesich connected on four field goals and Tyler Nubin and Devon Williams each contributed a sack and forced fumble to help visiting Minnesota edge No. 24 Iowa 12-10 on Saturday in Iowa City.

Minnesota (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) snapped an eight-game losing streak in the Floyd of Rosedale trophy series in a contest that featured 18 combined punts — and a would-be punt return touchdown in the final two minutes that was nullified.

Cooper DeJean of Iowa (6-2, 3-2) appeared to return a punt 54 yards for a touchdown that would have put the hosts ahead 16-12. DeJean allowed the ball to bounce before receiving the punt near the Minnesota sideline, then made multiple defenders miss before cutting back across the field. A replay review, however, showed that DeJean waved his left hand, a gesture deemed an invalid fair catch signal.

No. 25 UCLA 42, Stanford 7

Ethan Garbers made his first start since the season opener and threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns to the Bruins top the host Cardinal in a Pac-12 game.

Carson Steele led the ground attack with 76 yards and three touchdowns, and T.J. Harden contributed 55 rushing yards and a touchdown for UCLA (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12), which was coming off three straight games against ranked opponents in its conference, losing two.

Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels completed 27 of 45 passes for 268 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The Cardinal (2-5, 1-4) were held to 24 rushing yards.

Vegas stretched its season-opening winning streak to six games, the longest by a defending Stanley Cup champion in league history. Vegas entered play tied with the 1985-86 Edmonton Oilers and 1920-21 Ottawa Senators for the longest such streak by a reigning champ.

Thirteen players notched points for the Golden Knights. Cotter contributed a goal and an assist, while Michael Amadio had two assists.

Red Wings 5, Senators 2

WOMEN’S GOLF

JUSTIN SUH TAKES HIS FIRST 54-HOLE LEAD ON THE PGA TOUR INTO FINAL ROUND OF THE ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP

INZAI CITY, Japan (AP) Justin Suh shot a 3-under 67 on Saturday to lead the third round of the Zozo Championship, the first time he’s the leader going into the final day of a PGA Tour event, and also looking of his first PGA Tour victory.

Just one shot behind are fellow Americans Eric Cole and Beau Hossler, who are also seeking their first PGA Tour victories. Cole shot 66 and Hossler, the second-round leader, had a 68 on a sunny fall day at the Narashino Country Club just outside Tokyo.

To make the three very uncomfortable, Collin Morikawa – the first-round leader – is just two shots back after a 66. Morikawa is looking to break a “mini-slump” since winning the 2021 British Open and the DP World Tour Championship later that year. He also won the PGA Championship in 2020.

Suh played on the Korn Ferry Tour, the developmental feeder for the PGA Tour, and credits the experience there for his growing maturity.

“Throughout this year I’ve put myself in this position a few times in some big tournaments,” Suh said. “Every week you put yourself in this position you learn a little piece of it.”

Suh is a former No. 1-ranked world amateur and a former conference player of the year at the University of Southern California.

“I think just gaining the experience is the big part,” Suh added. “Hopefully, you know, I just come here and just do what we’ve been doing; try to find fairways, greens and just be aware of all the changing conditions.”

Morikawa hit only three fairways in the wind-blown 73 in the second round. He was hardly any better Saturday, hitting four. But despite dropping three shots over the first four holes, he recovered with eight birdies and a bogey over the last 14 holes.

“It wasn’t an inability to handle the wind, it was just an inability to hit fairways. And that continued today,” Morikawa said. “Look, the irons still really good. It’s not the irons, it’s just can I manage from the middle of the fairway or not.”

He almost predicted he’ll be a major threat on Sunday to the three ahead of him.

“I haven’t had a round like that in a while. I think it just shows that my head’s in the right space.”

Hossler said the same thing about hitting in the fairways, and several players mentioned reading the changing wind direction with a sunny day predicted for Sunday. Overnight rain was predicted for late Saturday.

“The key out here is absolutely to get the ball in the fairway because playing out of this zoysia rough, you just have no clue what it’s going to do.” Hossler said.

Morikawa has distant roots in Japan, so winning here would be special. There are also several Japanese players – or players with Japanese roots – in the chase.

Satoshi Kodaira of Japan is three back at 6-under 204 after a 69. American Kurt Kitayama had the low round Saturday of 64, leaving him alone at four back. And Ryo Ishikawa of Japan carded 69, in a group of three that’s five off the pace.

NASCAR

BLANEY IS BACK ON TRACK AFTER DISQUALIFICATION, THEN REVERSAL. NASCAR PLAYOFFS RESUME AT HOMESTEAD

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) Ryan Blaney has experienced a range of emotions since last Sunday, from disappointment to relief.

The No. 12 Team Penske driver was disqualified after the opening race of the round of eight in NASCAR’s playoffs because of an alleged illegal front shock on his Ford.

But NASCAR reversed the disqualification a day later because of a flawed template used during the postrace inspection, leaving Blaney with a much smaller deficit to overcome in the playoff field when the round of eight continues Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“A lot of emotions,” Blaney said Saturday, “but it was nice that it ended up, I think, as it should have.”

Only Kyle Larson has clinched a spot in the championship finale next month – the Hendrick Motorsports driver won the opening race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. But Monday’s reversal restored Blaney’s sixth-place finish in that race and reduced his deficit from 56 points below the playoff cutline to 17.

“It’s still going to be hard to make it,” Blaney said, “but it’s not like a must-win. So it gives you a little more hope.”

Blaney, who is trying to make his first Cup Series championship finale, was running third in Homestead last year before he spun out. He said he’d like to capitalize on his experience in past races here, but anything can happen.

“Here you can have problems. Running the wall you can break some stuff pretty easy,” Blaney said. “You just go race and do the best you can.”

Larson, last year’s Homestead winner, has little to gain in these next two races leading up to the championship, but that doesn’t change his approach to Sunday’s race.

“The pressure is probably a lot less than what other drivers are feeling,” Larson said, “but I feel like I want to win just as bad as anyone else does, too.”

Larson’s teammate William Byron is second in the playoff field. Teammates Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing round out the top four.

After Sunday’s race in Homestead, playoff drivers will have one more shot to reach the championship finale. The round of eight concludes at Martinsville Speedway next weekend.

For one last time, Kevin Harvick returns to the track where he won the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship nine years ago.

Sunday’s race is named the 4EVER 400 presented by Mobil 1 in a nod to Harvick, who will retire from NASCAR at the end of this season after 60 career victories, three NASCAR national series championships and 13 consecutive playoff appearances.

The No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing driver will run the same paint scheme he won with at the 2014 championship at Homestead. NASCAR senior adviser Mike Helton, whom Harvick has developed a close relationship with over the years, will be an honorary starter for the race, and Stewart-Haas Racing crew chief Rodney Childers and his family will serve as grand marshals.

“What we set out to do was tell the story of the past 30 years,” Harvick said Saturday, “and reintroduce the fans that weren’t around to the early part of my career. … It’s been a great ride.”

Childers described his relationship with Harvick as the easiest one could have. Harvick’s fellow competitors lauded his intensity and leadership.

“In my opinion, he’s a Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart – when he leaves, you’re going to notice that he’s not there anymore,” Hamlin said. “He’s certainly been a leader in the sport. He’s kind of the last legacy guy we’ve got in our sport that used to know how it used to be. He’s an important figure.”

Harvick has not won a race this season.

Truex, driver of the No. 19 for Joe Gibbs Racing, gave Toyota its 500th pole win in NASCAR competition with a pole victory Saturday. He will lead the field for Sunday’s race.

Truex turned a lap of 167.441 mph, ahead of teammates Bubba Wallace (167.115 mph) and Tyler Reddick (166.955), who qualified second and third.

It is Truex’s 22nd career Cup series pole.

“I didn’t really expect to get the pole today, honestly,” Truex said. “After practice, I felt like our car was pretty good in the long run, and we needed to make some tweaks to be better for tomorrow.”

Truex won the regular-season title but has flamed out in the playoffs as he vies for a second Cup title.

“I felt good coming into this round,” he said. “Coming here I felt good because it’s been a good track for us. We’ve run up front here a lot, and it’s just a comfort zone for me at this kind of racetrack.”

Larson qualified fifth. Byron qualified seventh and Blaney at No. 10. Denny Hamlin (11th) and Christopher Bell (13th) followed, and Chris Buescher was the lowest-qualifying playoff driver at 17th.

Larson is the race favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. … Joey Logano, last year’s championship finale winner, crashed in practice Saturday and was unable to make a qualifying lap. … Grammy Award-winning artist Pitbull will be an honorary pace car official on Sunday.

2023 4EVER 400: PREVIEW, 5 BEST BETS, LONGSHOT PICK

Kyle Larson secured his spot in the Championship 4 with his win in Las Vegas last week, leaving only three coveted spots remaining entering Sunday’s 4EVER 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The race was named in honor of Kevin Harvick, who will retire at the end of this season.

Larson’s teammate, William Byron, holds a seven-point margin atop the NASCAR Cup Series standings. The other two Championship spots are currently held by regular-season champion Martin Truex Jr. and his teammate Denny Hamlin, but they are only two points clear of Christopher Bell.

“We’re looking forward to this weekend,” Hamlin said.

“Obviously, we would have liked to have finished last week a little better to be in a better spot in the points, but we feel good about Homestead. It’s a track we’ve had some success at and feel like we can run up front and score points.

“That’s the name of the game right now, to just qualify up front, score points in the stages and finish as good as we can. It’d be awesome to win the race and lock ourselves in, but if we can’t do that, we need to maximize our day.”

Tyler Reddick is 16 points out of a Championship 4 spot, followed by Ryan Blaney one point further back and Chris Buescher, who is 23 points behind Hamlin.

4EVER 400

5 BEST BETS
Kyle Larson (+250 at BetMGM)
Larson is not only coming off a victory last week, he’s the defending champion of this race. He has been hit-and-miss this year — Larson also has seven DNFs to go with his four wins — but enters this week with a ton of momentum.

Tyler Reddick (+500)
Reddick won the Xfinity Series championship in 2018-19 after winning consecutive races at Homestead. He’s third at the book, having drawn 9.7 percent of the total money to win this week. Reddick has been running well of late with a sixth and eighth the past two weeks.

Martin Truex Jr. (+500)
Truex has good memories from Homestead, where he won in 2017 en route to claiming his first Cup Series title. He’s also sitting on the pole for Sunday’s race. “That’s the kind of track I really like,” Truex said of Homestead. “You can run all over and it’s really low-grip and it wears tires out. You really have to manage your car and your tires throughout runs. Be able to move around the track and find lines that work for you. It’s a big challenge and I enjoy tracks like that.”

William Byron (+700)
Byron won this race two years ago for his second Homestead victory — he also won the 2016 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the track. He already has a career-high and series-leading six wins this year. Byron’s 19 top-10 finishes in 2023 are also one shy of a career high. He’s the book’s second-biggest liability this week and leads the field with 11.2 percent of the total bets and 13.6 percent of the money since opening at +750.

Denny Hamlin (+900)
No active driver has won more races at Homestead than Hamlin, who visited Victory Lane here in 2009, 2013 and 2020. Another win and he would break the all-time record he shares with Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart. Hamlin owns a career average finish of 9.833 at Homestead. He’s second at the book, having been backed by 8.2 percent of the total bets.

LONGSHOT PICK
Christopher Bell (+1400)
Bell won at Martinsville a week before the 2022 finale and he’ll need to pull another rabbit out of his hat to qualify for the Championship 4 this year. He owns a career average finish of 13.0 at Homestead — best among the four drivers currently below the cut line.

COLTS FOOTBALL

BROWNS PREVIEW

The Cleveland Browns’ defense, entering Week 7, has been historically difficult to move the ball against. That’s not hyperbole. A few by-the-numbers things to know about the group the Colts will face on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium:

3.8 yards per play allowed. No team since 1977 has finished a season allowing under 3.9 yards per play. Only one team in the last three decades has allowed fewer than four yards per play, that being the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers, who won Super Bowl XLIII.

200.4 yards allowed per game. The Browns are on pace to allow 3,407 yards of total defense in 2023, which would be the lowest total for a full season since the NFL switched to a 16-game schedule in 1978 (the NFL schedule, of course, is now 17 games).

Under 150 yards per game. Through six games, the Browns have held two opponents – the Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals – to 73 and 144 yards of total offense, respectively. Only 24 teams since 1999 have held opponents under 150 yards twice in a season; if the Browns do it one more time, they’ll be only the sixth team in that span to hit that mark.

Four turnovers forced. Here’s the last thing about the Browns’ defense: They don’t take the ball away. Only the New England Patriots have fewer takeaways (three) than the Browns entering Week 7. In a sense, that makes Jim Schwartz’s defense even more smothering: They don’t even need to take the ball away to stop opposing offenses.

“These guys fly around, they play full speed – high-effort group,” offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. “Really running to the ball, really running to the action. No hesitating has been found on tape. They play real fast, they play real hard. They make it tough on offenses.

“We’ve got a challenge in front of us this week, but that’s what we enjoy about the NFL – having a challenge and trying to rise up to the occasion. You can’t find a lot of numbers that you can criticize on this defense so I won’t be the one to put it out there. These guys are playing great ball, we’re excited to compete against them and this time of the week, trying to put together a good plan. Try to put together a good plan, give us a chance to win this game and see if we can’t have a chance to compete.”

The Colts’ challenge against Cleveland’s defense will come after a challenging week at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center. Coming off Week 6’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, defensive tackle Grover Stewart was suspended six games for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances and quarterback Anthony Richardson was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

But there were no woe-is-us vibes on 56th Street this week. The message from head coach Shane Steichen on down to the team’s leaders was this: We’re 3-3 with 11 games to go, and everything we want to accomplish this season remains ahead of us.

“We still got a whole season ahead,” defensive tackle DeForest Buckner said. “It’s cliche to say but it’s true — next man up. The guys, we all have faith in each other and we trust one another to get the job done. And we gotta continue as a team, as a unit to move forward and continue to stack these wins.”

This is where the culture Steichen has worked to build within the Colts is important. A difficult loss followed by a difficult week followed by a difficult opponent isn’t the easiest thing to navigate, but the focus has been on Week 7 and what lies ahead, not on what happened in the past.

And that makes the Colts well-equipped to handle adverse, hard situations better. The Colts have four games left before their bye: vs. Cleveland and New Orleans at home, then at Carolina and against New England in Germany. Plenty can happen between now and Thanksgiving, starting with Sunday’s matchup against one of the best defenses in the NFL at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“I feel like the season is a marathon,” linebacker Zaire Franklin said. “There are highs and lows throughout this league. You’re losing guys to season-ending injuries. Weekly, it’s always something new. I think it’s the team that handles adversity the best, the team that continues to focus on getting better every week that eventually comes out on top.”

INDIANA FOOTBALL

HOOSIERS FALL SHORT AGAINST RUTGERS ON HOMECOMING

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Defeat didn’t buckle cornerback Nic Toomer. In a somber Memorial Stadium W. Jay and Nancy Wilkinson Performance Center in the aftermath of Saturday’s 31-14 loss to Rutgers, he focused on the future, on getting back to work, on fixing mistakes, and pushing to improve.

“What’s past is the past,” he said. “We have a big challenge ahead of us. We still can make a bowl game. We put this behind us and go back to work.”

On a postcard-perfect-weather Homecoming, opportunity was there, execution wasn’t. Rutgers (6-2) scored 10 points on Hoosier special teams mistakes. It rushed for 276 yards and possessed the ball for nearly 38 minutes to IU’s 22.

“We’ve got to execute better,” head coach Tom Allen said. “We have to keep the defense off the field. Get key stops at key times.”

A third-straight loss dropped Indiana to 2-5 overall, 0-4 in the Big Ten.

“This is not a good place to be,” Allen said. “It falls on me. I’m the one responsible.

“These are challenging times. It’s frustrating to have those kinds of mistakes. Those are things we have to be better at.”

Postseason hopes remain, even as the margin for error shrinks. IU must win four of its last five games to become bowl eligible. Next up is a trip to top-10 Penn State, which is coming off a Saturday loss at Ohio State.

“We’ll go back to work,” linebacker Aaron Casey said. “We still have five games left.”

Added Allen: “We have another opportunity next week, but it’s about us right now. We have to band together. That’s what we’ll do. We’ll lock arms and fight.”

Still, is the season slipping away?

“It’s a reality when you get to this stage,” Allen said. “It’s a tough reality. We don’t hide from it. We’ve got to do a better job as coaches and players. It’s all of us together.”

In the first half, Rutgers blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. With less than a minute left in the first half, Jaylin Lucas fumbled a punt return, the Scarlet Knights recovered and turned it into a field goal. That was enough to give them a 17-14 halftime lead.

Allen called the blocked punt “inexcusable.”

For the second-straight week, IU’s offense started strong.

Quick passes. No huddle. Up tempo. Bold play calling.

It was all on display on the game’s opening drive. Quarterback Brendan Sorsby was 6-for-7 for 58 yards (completing passes to five difference receivers), capped by a 35-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Omar Cooper Jr. on fourth and five. Running back Christian Turner added 17 yards on two carries.

The Hoosiers led 7-0. Could they sustain that efficiency?

They could not.

“We all have a job to do,” Cooper said. “We’ve got to keep working. We have to figure out what we’re having trouble with, and get better at it.”

Sorsby finished 15-for-31 for 126 yards and one touchdown. He rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown.

“He did some good things,” Allen said. “He has to continue to grow and develop. That’s the key.

“He earned the right to start. We still have to generate more. We’re not good enough in the throw game to score points.

“We have to build off what he’s doing well.”

In the second half, Rutgers wore down the Hoosiers with their running game and outscored them 14-0.

Scarlet Knights quarterback Gavin Wimsatt threw for 39 yards, rushed for 143.

“They’re a heavy run team,” Toomer said. “The defense was on the field a long time. We have to lock in on the details. Everyone has to do his job.”

Casey said IU prepared for Rutgers rushing attack.

“We knew what was coming. We have to do a better job of stopping it. We have to execute the whole play, whistle to whistle.”

IU took that early 7-0 lead. Rutgers countered with run-heavy touchdown drive and a blocked punt for a TD and a 14-7 lead.

The Hoosier defense provided a second-quarter spark by stopping the Scarlet Knights on fourth-and-two near midfield. The offense responded for the tying touchdown, the last four yards on a Sorsby run.

Lucas’ fumble while trying to catch a punt just before halftime set up a Rutgers field goal for a 17-14 halftime score.

Rutgers opened the third quarter with another run-heavy touchdown drive for a 24-14 lead, then made it 31-14 early in the fourth quarter on Wimsatt’s 80-yard TD run.

Hoosier comeback hopes were finished.

“At this stage, guys get down,” Allen said. “They get discouraged. We have to battle that. It comes from players and coaches. There’s no doubt they’re frustrated. They have to keep battling. Keep fighting.

“You rely on the character of your guys. You stand in the face of adversity, whether it’s self-inflicted or not. It comes back to every day keep working.”

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

HOOSIERS BEST BUCKEYES IN MARATHON MATCH

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Volleyball team, paced by 15 kills from graduate student middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg, survived a five-set battle with Ohio State on Saturday night (Oct. 21) in Wilkinson Hall.

A near three-hour match saw the Hoosiers fend off a late push from the visitors to win the decisive fifth set and close out a 3-2 victory (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13) to end the first half of the Big Ten season. IU moved to 6-4 in the conference this year, matching IU’s best ever 10-game start to league play (1985).

Freshman libero Ramsey Gary was outstanding defensively, digging a career-high 26 balls. Three other Hoosiers had nine digs while the team dug 72 as a whole. IU’s block came to life with 13.0 total team blocks. It also added 10 aces from the service line.

Ohio State All-American outside hitter Emily Londot went for 25 kills but was forced into 12 attacking errors. The loss by the Buckeyes was the first to an unranked opponent this season.

IU takes this win into a run of four-straight matches away from home, beginning with a contest in Champaign at Huff Hall against Illinois on Wednesday night (8:00 PM, Big Ten Network).

Stats and Notes

Team

• Ohio State outhit IU on the evening, .241-.181, while producing one more kill with six fewer errors on 15 fewer swings. Londot went for 25 kills (.183) while senior middle blocker Rylee Rader had 12 kills (.478) with just one error.

• The Hoosiers won the battle defensively and at the service line, tallying more blocks (13-8) and more aces (10-7) with each team totaling 72 digs. Gary had the match high with 26 digs.

• IU’s five-set victory ensured a 6-4 start to league play over the first 10 games. That matches the best start (1985) to a conference season in program history across the opening 10 contests.

• The 16 wins on the season matches the most (2018 and 2022) in a single season in the tenure of head coach Steve Aird with 10 contests still to play.

#10 Haworth, Camryn

• When IU needed her most, the junior produced some clutch moments to close out the match. She had 46 assists, nine digs, four kills and three aces on the night.

• Her 46 assists on the night helped push her past Whitney Granado (2009-12) on the program’s all-time assists list. She is now No. 10 in program history with 10 games left to go in her junior regular season.

#32 Gary, Ramsey

• A stalwart in the back row, Gary led the entire match with a career-best 26 digs. On the week, the freshman had 47 digs in two matches.

• Gary has 20+ digs in four-straight matches and has hit the 20-dig plateau on five occasions in conference play.

#18 Rammelsberg, Kaley

• The match leader in kills for IU with 15, Rammelsberg was equally productive on the defensive end, racking up seven blocks.

#13 Tatum, Avry

• Quiet in the early sets, Tatum came alive down the stretch once again for the Hoosiers. The sophomore provided eight kills, none more important than the match winner on an incredible back set from Haworth in the fifth set.

• She has produced the match-winning kill in both of IU’s five-set victories this year (at Miami (FL) and vs. Ohio State).

BUTLER VOLLEYBALL

BUTLERVB DELIVERS A REVERSE SWEEP OVER DEPAUL 3-2

INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler volleyball team survived a nail-biter in a five-set victory over DePaul (20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 16-14). After falling behind 2-0, the Bulldogs fought back, winning the next three sets to move to 4-6 in conference and 10-11 overall.

The Blue Demons jumped ahead to open the match at a 4-1 lead. Butler would fight back using kills from Mariah Grunze and Grace Boggess to bring the score to 9-7. Consecutive 3-0 runs by DePaul would then lengthen their lead to 17-10. The Bulldogs would rally late with kills from Grunze and Elise Ward to shorten the gap to 23-20, but the Blue Demons would score the next two points to close out the first set 25-20. The Blue Demons stormed back with five straight points to tie the set at 19-19. The Bulldogs then woke up going on a 3-0 run to claim the set 25-22.

Set 4: Butler 25-22

The Bulldogs picked up where they left off flying out to a 8-3 lead that included four team blocks highlighted by Boggess and back-to-back serving aces by Reese Bates. DePaul then started creeping back to make the score 10-8 before then going on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 14-11. Butler responded with a 3-0 spurt using consecutive kills by Grunze to tie the match 17-17. A kill and block by Ward helped the Bulldogs regain the lead at 20-19 followed by a 4-0 run topped off by a Kaylee Finnegan serving ace to make the score 24-21. Cora Taylor then put the set to bed with a kill to tie the match at two sets apiece.

Set 5: Butler 16-14

After giving up the first three points, Grunze’s kills led a 3-0 run for the Bulldogs to make the score 3-3. Another serving ace by Bates gave Butler a 6-4, but the Blue Demons would bring the score equal at 7-7. The Bulldogs then went on a 4-0 spurt using kills from Ward and a solo block from Cherry to take an 11-7 lead. DePaul wasn’t ready to give up, crawling back and eventually stealing back the lead at 14-13. With the all fans on their feet inside Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Bulldogs rallied for the next three points capped off by a game-winning kill from Boggess to secure the reverse sweep.

BUTLER FOOTBALL POSTS FIRST WIN AT DAYTON IN A DECADE 37-10

DAYTON – Butler jumped out to a 13-0 lead at Dayton and never looked back as the Bulldogs recorded a 37-10 win at Welcome Stadium. Jyran Mitchell accounted for three touchdowns on Saturday afternoon and Luka Zurak was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts. The win moves Butler to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Pioneer Football League.

Jyran Mitchell ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns against the Flyer defense. He scored the first touchdown of the game on a 24-yard run and would add a receiving touchdown before the half to help BU build a 20-3 advantage.

Luka Zurak hit two field goals in the first quarter (24, 46) and opened up the second half with a 36-yard make. Dayton’s lone touchdown came with less than six minutes to play in the game. Butler countered with a 59-yard TD run from Mitchell and Bret Bushka threw a touchdown to Ryan Lezon to seal the win.

Bushka didn’t throw an incomplete pass in the first half and would end the game hitting 18 of his 23 throws for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Loss led the wide receiver group with six catches for 86 yards.

Butler’s defense was led by Jeremiah Jackson and his team-high 11 tackles. Jackson and Charlie Bless each forced a fumble on Saturday. Lucas Kozlowski and Peyton Daniels were credited with fumble recoveries.

The Bulldogs will return to the Sellick Bowl next weekend for Homecoming. The battle for the Hoosier Helmet will fall on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kick-off on FloFootball is set for 1 PM.

IUPUI WOMEN’S SOCCER

JAGUARS STYMIE ROBERT MORRIS ON THE ROAD IN 1-0 VICTORY

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The IUPUI women’s soccer team collected a critical road victory on Saturday (Oct. 21) as the Jaguars blanked a powerful Robert Morris attack in a 1-0 triumph. Sophomore goalkeeper Cailynn Junk registered four saves to improve to 3-1 on the year and freshman Caroline Kelley netted her seventh score of the year for the day’s only offense.

“It was a great team effort today,” Junk said. “It was a win we needed to get on the road and we were able to dig it out. Being able to get the clean sheet was a job that needed to be done and we couldn’t have done it without the help of the defense, who stayed organized and connected.”

Offensively, IUPUI (10-3-4, 4-1-4 HL) struck early and was out on the front foot for the bulk of the first half. Kelley scored off a Kailyn Smith assist in the game’s ninth minute to stake the guests to a quick lead.

IUPUI stayed on the attack, outshooting RMU (10-4-3, 4-4-1 HL) 11-4 in the opening half and earning a 5-0 margin on corner kicks. Carlie Werner and Sam Slimak tested RMU keeper Brenna Murray early on as she ultimately finished with seven saves.

In the second half, RMU was able to tilt the field back towards level, but was unable to solve Junk and the Jaguars’ defense. Junk closed with four stops while Smith, Katie Hoog and Emily Tobin all played all 90 minutes in front of her.

Kelley fired a game-high seven shots while Slimak had four attempts, all on target.

The win gave the Jaguars’ three key points in the standings as IUPUI inched closer to a first round bye in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament.

“This was a big win on the road because it puts us three points closer to where we want to be going into the conference tournament,” Kelley said. “I’m very proud of the team for fighting the entire game to keep our early lead. There were a lot of positives to take away from this game and carry into our last regular season game.”

IUPUI will close out the regular season on Wednesday night (Oct. 25) against Purdue Fort Wayne at Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 6:00 p.m. That contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.

IUPUI MEN’S SOCCER

JAGUARS HAVE SENIOR DAY SPOILED IN 2-1 LOSS TO GREEN BAY

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s soccer team were knocked from the top of the Horizon League standings on Saturday (Oct. 21) as the Jaguars suffered a 2-1 loss to Green Bay on Senior Day at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Senior Lukas Hackaa tallied an early goal in the loss, but the Jaguars allowed a pair of unanswered scores in the defeat.

“We have to figure some things out. What I mean by that – it’s not our style, it’s not our players, it’s not our system – we looked tired after 15, 20 minutes and we haven’t played a game since last Saturday,” head coach Sid van Druenen said. “We have to figure out how we put in a proper performance a week ago and today we just looked deflated, energy less and tired.

“Kudos to Green Bay. I thought they were better and I thought they deserved to win. When you lose a game and it’s a deserved loss, you have to admit that and move on from it and learn from it. We did not do anything close today to be good enough to win this one.”

The loss snapped the Jaguars’ modest two-game winning streak as IUPUI (6-6-3, 4-2-1 HL) was coming off wins over Western Illinois and Northern Kentucky.

Saturday began well enough as Hackaa delivered a rocket into the teeth of a strong wind and into the far upper corner of the net in the 14th minute for a quick 1-0 lead. Sophomore Dominic Breidenbach initiated the play before Hackaa unloaded a bullet for his team-high seventh score of the season.

Green Bay (5-3-5, 3-2-2 HL) pulled even in the 29th minute when Chris Album redirected Josh Johansen’s initial attempt past Lucas Morefield for his sixth score of the year. Johnansen’s initial strike appeared aimed for the left corner of the net, but Album’s redirect completely changed the ball’s direction and it easily cleared the endline for a score.

IUPUI had the wind at its back for the second half, but was unable to create anything against a tough Green Bay defense for long stretches of time. The Phoenix got the winner in the 84th minute when Keegan Walker’s initial attempt was stopped by Morefield, but Tommy Coughlin pounced on the rebound and  scored from eight yards out for the final margin.

Green Bay finished with a 15-9 shot advantage and held IUPUI to just two attempts on frame. Sophomore Josemir Gomez was the lone IUPUI player with multiple attempts and Morefield closed with five saves.

IUPUI will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 when the Jaguars host Milwaukee at Carmel High School at 3:00 p.m.

IUPUI VOLLEYBALL

VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO MILWAUKEE IN FOUR SETS, 3-1

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI volleyball team fell to the Milwaukee Panthers in four sets, 3-1. The Jags won the first set but couldn’t keep the momentum as they fell in the last three sets. Junior Briana Brown led the Jaguar attack with 10 kills.

The Panthers took the early lead in the opening set but the Jags quickly earned control at 6-6 all. Kills by Brown and Emily Alan led the way while attack errors from Milwuakee allowed for the Jags to take the lead. IUPUI sealed the first set win at 25-18.

Milwaukee earned the first four points to force an IUPUI timeout to start the second set. IUPUI hit just .121 in the second set while the Panthers hit .267 to earn the second set victory, 25-17. In the third set the Jags were outhit .152 to Milwaukee’s .375 to fall two sets to one, 25-17.

With the match on the line, the Jags couldn’t gain control in the fourth and final set. Although the Jags improved their attack, hitting .200 with 14 kills, the Panthers serve proved too strong for IUPUI with three aces to win the set, 25-21.

Brown led the attack with ten kills while Maia Long and Morgan Ostrowski each added nine. Grace Purichia led in assists with 42 while also collecting ten digs. Brynn Zastrow and Addie Evans also added ten digs.

The Jags are now 8-14 overall and 2-9 in Horizon League play. The travel to Cleveland State on Tuesday, October 24 for a 6:00 PM first serve.

#6 IRISH WIN ACC COASTAL TITLE WITH DRAW AT #3 WAKE FOREST

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The No. 6 Fighting Irish men’s soccer team battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at No. 3 Wake Forest in the final road game of the regular season at Spry Stadium on Friday evening.

Daniel Russo provided the heroics for the Irish, scoring in the 85th minute off a diving header from a free kick delivery off the foot of Ethan O’Brien.

With the draw, Notre Dame outright clinched the ACC Coastal Division and a top-2 seed in the ACC Tournament.

Bryan Dowd made five saves on the evening to keep the Wake Forest attack in check.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The two sides came out and traded jabs in the opening stages with neither team landing a big blow in the opening 45 minutes of play, as the match was scoreless going into the halftime break.

Notre Dame put its first shot on target in the 19th minute, as Matthew Roou dispossessed a Wake Forest center back and found KK Baffour in space, who fired a shot towards the far post that was pushed out for a corner by the Demon Deacon keeper.

With just over a minute left in the frame Baffour’s free kick connected with Mo Williams but the grad student’s header was right at the Wake Forest keeper, sending the two sides to halftime at 0-0.

The Irish were forced to defend for much of the second half, as they put out fires all over the pitch. However, in the 79th minute Wake Forest found the opener off a strike from Leo Guarino. Irish goalkeeper Bryan Dowd got a finger to the shot to push it to the post but it ricocheted in to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Notre Dame responded. Roou won a free kick in the final third in the 85th minute and O’Brien perfectly floated his delivery into the box. Russo ran in and dove to win the ball, firing his shot just inside the near post to secure the 1-1 draw on the road.

McFARLAND FAMILY MEN’S HEAD SOCCER COACH CHAD RILEY’S TAKE

NOTRE DAME HOCKEY

IRISH FALL IN GAME TWO AGAINST TERRIERS

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame hockey program dropped an 8-2 decision to No. 6/6 Boston University to finish the weekend with a split.

The Irish took the first penalty of the night, a hook, just 1:32 into the opening frame. Despite successfully killing it off, the Terriers took advantage of an extended shift and opened the scoring at 3:40 of the first period.

BU struck again shortly after to grab the 2-0 lead but Ryan Siedem had an answer at the opposite end with a shot from the point to cut the Irish deficit in half at 5:15 of playing time.

The Terriers would strike three more times before the end of the first period as the Irish faced a 5-1 hole heading into the intermission.

The visitors extended their lead with three goals in the middle frame for the 8-1 tally.

Notre Dame got one back in the final period of regulation, off the stick of Tyler Carpenter, for the 8-2 final.

Ryan Bischel and Jack Williams split time in goal Saturday night, with J. Williams taking over the crease at the start of the second for his first appearance of the season. In 40 minutes between the pipes, J. Williams set a career-best 25 saves, including 11 in the final period of regulation.

The team finished the night four-of-five on the penalty kill but were unable to capitalize on their four powerplay opportunities as they fell to the visiting Terriers.

GOALS

The Irish scored off the faceoff early in the first period with Hunter Strand lining up at the dot. He boxed out the Terrier defender for Grant Silianoff to feed a pass back to Ryan Siedem at the point. The graduate blueliner ripped a wrister on net for his first goal in an Irish sweater, and second point of the weekend.

Tyler Carpenter net his first goal of the season at 13:56 of the third period for Notre Dame’s second tally of the night. The junior center intercepted the puck at center ice, creating an odd-man rush with Brennan Ali and Grant Silianoff into the Irish zone. Ali skated the puck into the zone and centered a pass to Silianoff who fought off the Terrier defender and allowed Carpenter a chance on net.

UP NEXT

BALL STATE FOOTBALL

CARDINALS EARN 24-17 HOMECOMING WIN OVER CENTRAL MICHIGAN

MUNCIE, Ind. – Marquez Cooper rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown, and Kiael Kelly added 64 rushing yards and two scores to lead Ball State to a 24-17 Mid-American Conference win over Central Michigan. Cooper and Kelly led a Cardinal offense that amassed 243 rushing yards, but it was the Ball State defense that asserted itself early and late to lead the Cardinals (2-6, 1-3 MAC) to their first MAC victory.

The Cardinals allowed CMU a 45-yard field goal just three-and-a-half minutes after the opening kickoff, but Ball State defenders kept the Chippewas off the scoreboard until a 19-yard TD strike with 4:29 left in the third and the Ball State offense scored 17 unanswered points to command a third quarter lead.

After Tristan Mattson’s field goal to open the scoring, Ball State forced the Chippewas into four straight punts and Kelly, making his second start at quarterback, guided the Cardinals into the lead.

Kelly engineered a 7-play, 75-yard drive after the CMU field goal with the redshirt sophomore scoring the first touchdown of his career to put Ball State on top, 7-3. The Cardinals added a 33-yard field goal by Jackson Courville to lead 10-3 at intermission.

With Sidney Houston Jr., Cole Pearce and Jordan Riley leading an inspired defensive effort, Cooper helped Ball State race to a 17-3 advantage to rally the 15,171 spectators during the Cardinals’ 96th homecoming game. Cooper ‘s 15-yard burst put the Cardinals up by two touchdowns with 10:07 left in the third period. His 39-yard run on that scoring drive was his longest carry of the season. In all, he carried 26 times to eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark for the 15th time in his career and the second time this season.

Central Michigan finally got back on the board while driving 79 yards on 11 plays and capitalizing with the 19-yard pass from Jase Bauer to Jesse Prewitt III. But Kelly and the Cards answered right back with a 75-yard drive of their own, using Kelly’s athletic leap into the endzone to cap the drive on its 13th play, just moments into the fourth quarter.

Ball State, given its difficult start to the season, found itself in unusual territory while trying to run the clock in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals mustered just one first down on its next two possessions though, and CMU threatened to spoil the homecoming hoopla while reaching the end zone with 4:15 to play and taking over for a final possession with 2:11 to play.

That is when Houston and the defense rose to the occasion again. Bauer led Central Michigan across midfield with a minute remaining when Houston recorded his second sack of the day, forcing third-and-long. Two incomplete passes later, Ball State celebrated its first MAC win of the season.

Keionte Newson led the Cardinal defense with a career-high nine tackles. Pearce added nine and was credited three times with QB hurries that forced the Chippewas into punting situations. Riley had six stops, two behind the line of scrimmage, and a key pass break-up as part of team effort that limited CMU to 260 total yards and just 3-of-13 on third down.

“It all starts up front,” said Ball State coach Mike Neu when speaking of the defensive effort. “They use enormous effort do disrupt [the opponent’s] pocket and disrupt what [the opponent] is trying to do. Our defense has stood up to the change each of the last three weeks, and it all starts up front.”

Offensively, Kelly managed a revamped offense designed to complement his explosive array of skills, completed 13 of 16 passes for 101 yards and vastly outperformed his 4-of-16 passing effort for 38 yards in a driving rain a week earlier against Toledo.

“Kiael is so dynamic,” said Ball State coach Mike Neu, “and today he was efficient. He’s a great facilitator, a great point guard, and because of his athleticism, defenses have to respect him.”

The Cardinals snapped a four-game losing skid while winning their homecoming game for the third time in the past four seasons. The Chippewas (4-4, 2-2 MAC) lost for the second time in three weeks and fell to 1-4 on the road.

Ball State is off for 11 days before opening #MAC-tion midweek play on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Bowling Green.

BALL STATE VOLLEYBALL

VOLLEYBALL SUFFERS SECOND STRAIGHT FIVE SET LOSS AT BUFFALO

BUFFALO – – In another tough battle at Alumni Arena, the Ball State women’s volleyball team won an extended opening set and led 2-1 after three, only to suffer a 3-2 (33-35, 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 15-12) setback to Mid-American Conference East Division leader Buffalo Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Cardinals (12-10, 9-2 MAC) and Bulls (19-4; 9-2 MAC) pull even for second place in the overall league standings, trailing only Western Michigan’s unblemished 11-0 MAC record.

It was an offensive showcase for both squads Saturday, with Ball State outhitting the Bulls .346 to .322 on the day. The effort was the Cardinals’ second-best of the season, while five BSU student-athletes connected for double-digit kills for the first time since the 2021 season.

Leading the way was redshirt freshman Aniya Kennedy with 23 markers, the fourth time this season she has smashed 20+ kills in a contest. Fifty-year middle Marie Plitt was not far behind, adding 17 kills and a .444 (17-1-36) hitting mark.

Freshman middle Camryn Wise followed with a career-high 11 kills, while sophomore opposite Madison Buckley and senior outside Cait Snyder collected 10 apiece. All five were set up by junior setter Megan Wielonski who collected her 12th double-double of the season with 57 assists and 14 digs.

Fifth-year libero Havyn Gates led four Cardinals in double figures with 20 digs, while senior defensive specialist Kate Vinson was credited with a season-high 15. Junior defensive specialist Kendall Seimet rounded out the quartet with 14.

On the other side of the net, Stacia Gollogly led a quintet of Bulls attackers in double figures with 24 kills, while Maria Futey collected a match-high 21 digs.

While Ball State managed to out dig (80 to 73) and out block (8.0 to 5.0) Buffalo, the Bulls held the edge in kills (86 to 76) and aces (8 to 1).

From start to finish, Saturday’s competition was a heated one with the first set ending at 35-33. It was the Cardinals’ offensive consistency that allowed BSU to claim the first frame with only four attack errors to UB’s seven. Buckley came through with two kills towards the end which helped the Cardinals to secure the first set.

Buffalo led the second set both defensively and offensively as Ball State suffered some setbacks at the net and were unable to connect offensively. The Bulls would knot the match at 1-1 heading into the five-minute break.

The Cardinals came back offensively in the third frame with 18 kills on 27 attempts with no errors for a .667 hitting percentage. At the end, however, it was a massive solo block from Wise which gave BSU the 25-17 third-set win.

In the fourth set, the Cardinals were up 21-18 after a kill from Plitt. Unfortunately, Buffalo used its home court to its advantage, winning the set with a 7-1 run.

The teams battled to a 6-6 stalemate to open the fifth frame before a 6-2 run gave UB a four-point edge. Buffalo reached match point at 14-10 before kills from Wise and Kennedy gave BSU some late life and forced a timeout. Unfortunately, the Bulls answered with a kill from Abby Leigh to pick up a second straight five-set victory.

The Ball State women’s volleyball team returns to Worthen Arena next Friday when it hosts Kent State for Alumni Night. The match is slated for a 6 pm ET start.

South Dakota scored two second-half touchdowns with Nate Thomas scoring from five yards out in the third quarter, while Charles Pierre Jr. broke loose on an 81-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to provide the scoring margin the Coyotes would need to pick up their first win in Terre Haute since 2019.

The Sycamores answered on the ensuing drive as Jake Andjelic answered with a 39-yard field goal to end an eight-play, 44-yard drive to tie the game up at 3-3 with 5:35 remaining in the first half.

South Dakota took a 10-3 lead with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter as Nate Thomas ended a seven-play, 98-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown rush over the left side. The drive was highlighted by a 59-yard completion from Aidan Bouman to JJ Galbreath.

Charles Pierre Jr. provided the final score of the contest with an 81-yard touchdown carry with 12:04 remaining in the fourth quarter to provide the final 17-3 margin in the contest.

PURDUE FT. WAYNE MEN’S SOCCER

SENIOR NIGHT ENDS IN 2-2 DRAW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mastodon men’s soccer team moved their unbeaten streak to three matches with a 2-2 tie against Cleveland State on Saturday (Oct. 21) at the Hefner Soccer Complex.

It was Senior Night for the ‘Dons as Michael Teller, Max Collingwood, Marco Navarro, Danny Salazar, Alex Frank, Marc Rodriguez, Luke Morrell and Soshi Fujioka were honored prior to the game.

When the match got going it felt like a game of red light-green light with 36 combined fouls and 11 combined cards. Only one of the four goals in the game came during the run of play. One was off a corner and two were penalty kicks. Additionally, a penalty kick for each team was saved.

The first key play of the match came in the eighth minute when Salazar saved a Viking penalty kick. Scoring opened in the 15th minute when Seth Mahlmeister converted on a penalty kick goal.

But the ‘Dons wouldn’t take a lead to the break. Pablo Kawecki tied it off a free kick attempt from 20 yards out in the 29th minute. It was Kawecki again in the 41st minute, this time on assists by Josh Davis and Marko Rimac.

The Mastodons earned a shot to tie it up in the 55th minute but Mahlmeister’s penalty kick was turned back.

However, it was Mahlmeister earning the equalizer in the 68th minute. He snuck a ball just inside the right post off a corner kick by Fujioka. Mahlmeister now has a league-best nine goals, fifth most in the NCAA Division I era in program history for goals in a season. Fujioka has a league-best eight assists, fourth in the DI era for the ‘Dons.

Purdue Fort Wayne held a 23-11 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The ‘Dons move to 6-4-3 (3-2-2 Horizon League). Cleveland State is now 3-7-4 (2-2-3 Horizon League).

Purdue Fort Wayne is at Northern Kentucky on Saturday (Oct. 28) and then hosts IUPUI on Nov. 1 to close out the regular season. The ‘Dons have 11 points in league play, tied for third in the standings.

SOUTHERN INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

BEDNAR, MOORE SET CAREER HIGHS IN FIVE-SET LOSS

MACOMB, Ill. – Senior outside/right side hitter Abby Bednar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and sophomore libero/defensive specialist

Keira Moore

Keira Moore (Newburgh, Indiana) each recorded new career highs as University of Southern Indiana Volleyball (10-13, 6-6 OVC) fell to Western Illinois University (7-14, 6-4 OVC), 3-2 (25-20, 25-15, 25-22, 25-16, 15-13), at Western Hall Saturday afternoon. Bednar racked up 24 kills while Moore totaled 31 digs in the loss.

Big runs from the Leathernecks handed the Screaming Eagles the opening-set loss, 25-20. WIU came out the gates hot with a 6-2 lead until USI bounced back and scored six of the next seven points to take the 8-7 advantage. The Eagles took advantage of four Leathernecks’ errors during the stint. After junior middle hitter Paris Downing (Avon, Indiana) threw down a kill to make it 11-9, WIU went on a 5-1 spurt to regain the lead. USI was able to knot it back up at 17 apiece before the Leathernecks jumped out to a four-point lead after scoring five of the last six points to secure the victory. Attacking errors were the Achilles heel for the Eagles who racked up a match-high nine errors in the set.

A dominating outing from USI tied the match after the Eagles nabbed the 25-15 win in the second game. It was a close matchup early until USI tallied six of the seven points to hold a 16-10 advantage. Downing kicked off the run with a kill as Bednar and junior outside hitter Abby Weber (Fishers, Indiana) ended the stint with kills. Even after WIU stopped that run, Weber and Bednar turned around and batted down back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 19-11. The set was capped off with a 4-0 surge from the Eagles that was highlighted by three offensive miscues from the Leathernecks. USI’s offense produced 16 kills with just two errors and a match-high 0.389 hitting percentage while the defensive side allowed a match-low nine kills and forced seven errors.

WIU controlled the set the entire way to hand USI the 25-22 loss. It was an early 4-3 lead for the Eagles after a Downing kill and an ace from senior outside hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois). After that, it was all Leathernecks as WIU produced five kills and an ace to jump out to a 10-6 lead. The Eagles were able to cut the deficit to just one thanks to a pair of attacking errors and a Bednar kill but the Leathernecks retaliated with their own rally to make it 16-12. The relentless Eagles found a way to close the gap again, nabbing two kills in the process. Despite the momentum swing, WIU held off USI and closed out the frame with a team-high 16 kills.

A 7-0 surge to end the set sealed the dub for the Eagles, 25-16. It was back-and-forth play throughout the frame until USI was able to take a 17-14 lead after scoring five of the last six points. Moore started off the stint with an ace as Anderson collected three straight kills to keep the momentum. With an 18-16 advantage, the Eagles went on a game-sealing run that included three Bednar kills and an ace from freshman outside hitter Leah Coleman (Hoover, Alabama). USI’s offense dominated the game with 17 kills and a 0.317 hitting percentage.

Despite forcing a fifth set, USI could not close the match as the Eagles fell 15-13 to the Leathernecks. Bednar and Anderson led off the frame with kills until a 9-2 WIU run handed USI a 10-4 deficit out of the gate. Even after the large spurt, the Eagles held the Leathernecks to just four points in the last 13 rallies. USI trailed by just one until WIU nabbed a game-winning kill to record the victory. The Eagles put up nine kills with just one error, but it was the Leathernecks’ 11 kills that made the difference.

Also earning big numbers was Anderson who tallied 23 kills and 19 digs while Downing had nine kills and seven blocks. Junior setter Carly Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Indiana) put up 62 assists and 22 digs which marks the first time since Stephanie Wilson in 2005 that a USI setter has earned at least 60 assists and 20 digs in a single match. She also is the first player in the Ohio Valley Conference to secure 60+ assists in a single match and has done it in back-to-back matches.

As a team, the Eagles collected 71 kills, 69 assists, and five aces to go with 13 blocks and 95 digs. USI’s 95 digs, 85 points, and 69 assists were the most all-season. The Leathernecks totaled 60 kills, 57 assists, and four aces to pair with 91 digs and six blocks. Even though the Eagles had better numbers in all five categories, WIU came out on top.

NEXT UP FOR THE EAGLES:

The Eagles will have to wait 13 days until their next match due to the new schedule format set by the Ohio Valley Conference. USI will host Tennessee Tech University on November 3 and 4. Saturday’s match will be Senior Day where the Eagles will honor their four seniors.

VALPO VOLLEYBALL

VOLLEYBALL EXTENDS WINNING STREAK TO FIVE WITH SWEEP AT MISSOURI STATE

The Valpo volleyball team made quick work of Missouri State Saturday evening to conclude its four-match road swing, sweeping the host Bears 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-17). The Beacons won all four of their road matches in this two-weekend sweep and have now won five straight in conference play for the first time since joining the Valley.

How It Happened

For the second straight night, it took extra points to decide a tight opening set, as Saturday’s opener featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. In fact, neither the Beacons nor the Bears held more than a two-point edge in the first set.

Missouri State held a slight lead for much of the first half of the set before Valpo pushed to take control just past the halfway point. The Beacons held two-point leads at 16-14, 17-15, 18-16, 19-17 and 20-18, but all five times, MSU sided out to keep Valpo from making it a three-point edge.

The final sideout led to four straight points for the Bears, turning the tables and giving MSU a 22-20 lead. Valpo responded with consecutive points, and an MSU kill was answered by a kill from fifth-year Bella Ravotto (Mishawaka, Ind./Marian) to tie the frame at 23-all.

The Bears earned the first set point with a kill making it 24-23, but that proved to be MSU’s final point of the set, as fifth-year Miranda Strongman (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central [LIU]) finished the set with three consecutive kills to give Valpo the opener.

Valpo held the advantage early in set two, getting out to a 9-6 lead as senior Mallory Januski (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) had two blocks, a kill and a service ace in the early stretch.

MSU scored back-to-back

MSU scored back-to-back points to cut the Beacons’ edge to 9-8, but Valpo prevented the Bears from stringing together consecutive points the rest of the set, siding out on each of the Bears’ final six serves of the frame. The Beacons scored 16 of the final 21 points of the set to run away with the 2-0 lead in the match.

A 6-0 run early in set three gave Valpo the lead for good en route to the sweep. MSU was able to close to within two points at 11-9, but the Beacons quickly shut the door on any thought of extending the match with five points in a row — three of which came on two kills and a solo block from Januski.

Inside the Match

Saturday’s win extended Valpo’s current winning streak to five consecutive matches, its season-long winning streak.

It is the first time Valpo has won five consecutive MVC matches since joining the Valley — the program had previously won four straight conference contests three times.

The last time Valpo won five or more league matches in a row was a six-match winning streak in Horizon League play in 2013.

This was the first time Valpo has played four consecutive true road matches since playing five in a row on the road in the spring 2021 season, and the first time in a “normal” season since 2017.

This two-weekend stretch is the first time Valpo has played four or more true road matches in a row and won all of them since a six-match winning streak in 2008 which featured wins at Youngstown State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Loyola, UIC and Chicago State.

Saturday’s win was just the third in program history at Missouri State and was the first road sweep of the Bears.

Two of Valpo’s four victories in this road swing came in the minimum three sets, as the Beacons also won 3-0 at Indiana State. Prior to last weekend, Valpo’s last 3-0 road win in MVC play came at Indiana State on Oct. 5, 2019.

The highlight on the stat sheet was the eye-popping 31 digs put up by sophomore libero Emma Hickey (Granger, Ind./Penn) despite the match going just three sets. Hickey’s sixth career match with 30 or more digs, the 31 digs ties for second-most in a three-set match in program history.

The 31-dig effort leads all MVC players in three-set matches this year by a clear six digs, as Drake’s Jada Wills has two 25-dig matches in sweeps, as well as one from Illinois State’s Mari Hinkle.

Ravotto posted 12 digs in Saturday’s win to move past Lori Barton for eighth all-time in Valpo history with 1,546 career digs.

Once again, the balance on the attack helped the Beacons to the victory, as six players finished between six and 12 kills. Leading the way was redshirt sophomore Sam Warren (Kentland, Ind./South Newton), who surpassed her career high with 12 kills on .417 hitting while adding three blocks as well.

Strongman tallied nine kills and hit at a .368 clip, while Ravotto and junior Elise Swistek (LaPorte, Ind./New Prairie) posted eight kills each.

Januski added seven kills to go with a team-best four blocks and sophomore Maddie Moan (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock [Milwaukee]) chipped in six kills as well.

Senior Victoria Bulmahn (McCordsville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) dished out 23 assists, while redshirt sophomore Addy Kois (Osceola, Ind./Penn) handed out 19 assists.

The Beacons limited MSU to .103 hitting on the evening and held a 51-31 advantage in kills, the team’s first time with a 20-kill advantage since the win over Eastern Michigan in the Popcorn Classic in early September.

Freshman Kendal Ramey (Crawfordsville, Ind./Western Boone) made her collegiate debut in the third set as a serving substitute.

Next Up

Valpo (15-9, 7-4 MVC) returns home to the ARC after the grueling back-to-back road weekends and looks to extend its winning streak to six straight matches when it hosts Belmont Friday night at 6 p.m. The match can be seen live on ESPN+.

VALPO FOOTBALL

KEEFE SHINES IN SECOND HALF, DAVIDSON HOLDS ON FOR VICTORY

The Valparaiso University football team turned to redshirt freshman quarterback Rowan Keefe (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) after halftime, and he appeared ready for the moment in his collegiate debut. He completed nine of his 12 pass attempts for 187 yards and three touchdowns in a game that saw host Davidson sustain a 21-0 halftime lead in a 42-21 victory at Smith Field in Davidson, N.C.

How It Happened

On the first drive of the game, Davidson twice moved the chains on fourth down including a 41-yard pass on fourth-and-3 from the 43 that set up a two-yard touchdown plunge to make it 7-0 after a 12-play, 82-yard march that spanned 6:20.

Valpo went three-and-out, but the defense came up with a takeaway as Onye Nwosisi (Indianapolis, Ind. / Cardinal Ridge [Muskingum]) recovered a fumble at the Davidson 42 with 4:53 left in the first quarter.

The Beacons were stopped on four straight plays and turned the ball over on downs.

The Wildcats used a nine-play, 64-yard drive that finished with a 12-yard TD reception by Brody Reina on a pass from Coulter Cleland to make it 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Valpo moved the ball on its next drive with Brian Thomas (Apopka, Fla. / Orlando Christian Prep) putting together a pair of runs for eight yards or more and Jeffrey Jackson (San Diego, Calif. / Bishop’s [San Diego]) completing a 13-yard pass to Solomon Davis (Brighton, Tenn. / Brighton), but the series still resulted in a punt.

Another long drive for Davidson (nine plays, 80 yards) finished with a 2-yard TD run by Mason Sheron to make it 21-0. That score stood going into the halftime break.

Davidson once again found paydirt on its first drive of the second half to boost the lead to 28-0, but a 68-yard kickoff return by Jashon Butler (Lynwood, Wash. / Meadowdale [Arizona]) followed and helped spark the Beacons.

Keefe connected on an 18-yard pass to Max Carter (Camarillo, Calif.) before finding Brandon Jimenez (Suffern, N.Y. / Don Bosco Prep [Albany]) for a nine-yard touchdown to get Valpo on the board at 28-7 with 8:12 left in the third.

Davidson scored again on its next drive, but Valpo had another quick response. Keefe started the ensuing Valpo drive with a 68-yard pass to Jimenez, setting up a five-yard touchdown catch by Thomas on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 35-14.

A sack by Kobey Fitzgerald (Eastvale, Calif. / Servite [UCLA]) punctuated a three-and-out by the Valpo defense, then the Valpo offense once again started a drive with a big play. This time it was a 60-yard TD pass to Chris Gundy (Smithfield, VA. / Smithfield) to make it 35-21 with 12:45 to play.

Valpo had life after the defense got a big stop on fourth-and-2 from the Valpo 9, forcing Davidson’s first turnover on downs of the day with 7:59 left in a two-score game. However, Valpo turned it over on downs on the ensuing drive and Davidson added a late touchdown to account for the game’s final margin.

Inside the Game

Jimenez had two catches for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Gundy had two grabs for 73 yards and a score. Davis made a team-high four catches.

Jimenez’s TD catch was his second of the season, while Gundy’s represented the first of his collegiate career. Thomas also recorded his first collegiate score.

Butler had two kickoff returns for 90 yards including a long of 68, his third of 60+ yards this season.

The Valpo defense was led by Evan Annis (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Davidson) and Mohamed Kamara (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Kalamazoo Central [Hope]), who accrued 10 tackles apiece. This marked the first time this season a Valpo player racked up 10 or more tackles.

Davidson improved to 16-1 in its last 17 home games and 4-0 in PFL play this season. The Wildcats are among the national leaders in most offensive categories. They have made three straight FCS Playoff appearances.

Up Next

Valpo (1-6, 0-4 PFL) will play a rivalry game as the Battle for the Hoosier Helmet will transpire next Saturday at Butler. The game will kick off at noon CT in Indianapolis.

UINDY FOOTBALL

DEFENSIVE EFFORT HEADLINES 24-14 WIN AT QUINCY

QUINCY, Ill.—The No. 11 UIndy football team traveled to Quincy University Saturday afternoon and earned a 24-7 victory. The Greyhounds’ defensive prowess was on full display, limiting the host Hawks to just 57 rushing yards while racking up 11 tackles for a loss.

INS & OUTS

The low-scoring affair saw the teams battle to a 7-7 tie at the half, but a pair of second-half touchdown receptions by freshman Anthony Crowell helped the Hounds pull away. The go-ahead score came at the 6:11 mark of the third quarter as QB Gavin Sukup found Crowell for an 11-yard scoring strike to cap an efficient 64-yard drive.

Meanwhile, the UIndy D kept the Hawk’s big-play potential in check until the final minutes when Quincy broke off a 33-yard touchdown run inside of five minutes to go—its only offensive score of the afternoon.

UIndy’s front four were particularly dominant, with Justin Thomas, Aaron Barnett an Dylan Shelton combining for six sacks. Elsewhere, linebacker Clay Schulte led all players with a career-high 13 tackles, and senior Khoreice Crawford had the team’s only interception.

-Jon Lewis led the UIndy rushing attack with 81 yards, while Crowell had a team-high 71 receiving yards.

-Senior Luke Keller managed a season-long 55-yard punt while dropping two other punts inside the 20.

-UIndy’s final points came on a 25-yard field goal by senior Dylan Hillger, making it a three-score game with eight minutes to play.

MARIAN FOOTBALL

BALLHAWKING DEFENSE GUIDES MARIAN’S SIXTH CONSECUTIVE FRANCISCAN BOWL WIN

INDIANAPOLIS – Backed by a defense that tied a program record with five interceptions and an offense that capitalized on big plays, the Marian football team landed a 24-14 victory over St. Francis in the Franciscan Bowl on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Knights improve their season record to 7-0 while they move to 4-0 in the MSFA Mideast League.

Defensive plays highlighted much of the game, as the Knights were forced to a three-and-out by the Cougars on their opening drive, while the Cougars stalled out a lengthy opening drive. The first firework of the afternoon came on a field goal attempt for St. Francis, when James Ralph stuck a hand up and blocked a low kick from Aidan Hosler, denying the chance for points.

Marian’s offense struggled to keep in rhythm with their second crack at the ball and punted the ball back to the Cougars, however the Marian defense had a strong response as Danny Lewis went up and made an interception, stalling a 10-play USF series. Lewis’ interception gave Marian the ball with great field position, and one snap later Zach Bundalo uncorked a 38-yard touchdown pass to Tirae Spence, giving Marian a 7-0 lead. The score would hold at 7-0 as the first quarter expired with St. Francis marching on offense, but their drive ended in a turnover on downs after Reis Walker’s first career sack.

The Knights hunted points immediately after the sack, and got a boost in the form of a 52-yard run from William Gibson. Gibson’s long run set Marian up at the one yard line, and Bundalo finished the drive with a score as the quarterback lurched into the end zone for his fourth rushing touchdown of the season. The 14-0 lead looked well protected as Marian forced another punt, but after getting backed up from the boot, Keagan La Belle coughed up the ball, fumbling right back to St. Francis. The Cougars would score on the ensuing driving, making it a 14-7 game with 6:32 to play in the first half.

Marian regrouped after the fumble and marched down the field with the help of penalty yards and chunk passing plays, moving deep into Cougar territory. With 2:34 to play in the half, Bundalo connected with Jake Reichard for his second touchdown pass of the game, with the 11-yard connection giving Marian a 21-7 lead. The defense would protect the score going into halftime, as Danny Lewis made his second interception of the game to send both teams to the locker room.

Punts were exchanged by both sides on the opening possession for both teams after halftime, with a short punt on St. Francis’ second series giving Marian an opportunity to strike again. The Knights would fail to score however, as Bundalo threw his first interception in three games, giving the ball back to the Cougars. The hot potato effect continued as St. Francis carelessly gave Marian the ball right back, as Dwight Lewis III recorded his first interception of the season to stall Grant Gremel and the Cougars. Marian would ultimately end up punting the ball back to the Cougars, only to get the ball right back as Lewis III picked off Gremel again, with his diving catch coming at the USF 24.

Marlon Pomili would send a 42 yard field goal through the uprights four plays later and extend Marian’s lead to 24-7, where the score held until the start of the fourth quarter. St. Francis began marching down field after the kick, and on the opening play of the final period, Cam Peterson waltzed into the end zone to make it a 24-14 contest.

The Knights shortened the game after the score and pieced together a lengthy 14-play, 70-yard drive to get deep inside Cougar territory, but on a fourth down play Gibson was held a yard short, turning it over at the St. Francis six. Marian would quickly get the ball back as they forced a turnover on downs with the Cougars forced to go for it on fourth down, but couldn’t find an insurance goal as a sack forced Mason Miller back into action.

With 3:44 remaining in the game the Cougars took their final possession, and put together a promising series to get into Knight territory, but on a fourth and long it crumbled apart, as Dwight Lewis made a third interception in the game, robbing Gremel of a first down pass. Lewis’ interception extinguished all hope of a Cougar comeback with 2:17 to play, while a Keagan La Belle 66 yard run iced the win for Marian as the Knights would kneel out the final minute of the clock, sealing the 24-14 victory.

Marian ran for 201 yards as a team in the win, with La Belle and Gibson each recording their second 100-yard games of the season. La Belle finished with a game-high 105 yards, while Gibson had 100 yards. Spence had 72 yards receiving in the win, while Reichard and Drew Byerly each gained over 20 yards on five combined receptions. Bundalo finished the game passing for 120 yards and two scores, while running for a third. Bundalo’s rushing touchdown in the second quarter set a Marian single season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

Defensively, Dwight Lewis III stole the show by tying a single game record with three interceptions in addition to his four tackles and three pass breakups. Danny Lewis had two interceptions and three tackles, while the Knights’ leading tackler was Jake Paris with nine total stops. Clay Campbell, Walker, Joe Owens, and Deon Pettiford each recorded a sack in the victory, and Marshall Flaig made five stops filling in for an injured Nate Frey.

Marian gets set to go on the road for their next two games, as they play back to back games in Grant County. The first of the two comes on Saturday October 28, as the Knights travel to Taylor for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1845      The first known box score appears in the New York Morning News. Alexander Cartwright’s notation detailing the game comes a month after some of his fellow Knickerbockers wrote the first set of rules.

1910      After three straight defeats and trailing Philadelphia by a run in the ninth, the Cubs tie the score, winning 4-3 in ten innings for their only World Series victory. The A’s will easily take the Fall Classic in five games.

1927      Future Hall of Famer Ross Youngs dies of Bright’s disease, a historical classification of kidney diseases. ‘Pep’ was a .322 hitter during his ten-year Giant career and was one of John McGraw’s favorite players.

1929      In Baltimore, Phillies’ starting catcher Walt Lerian dies from injuries sustained when a runaway truck pins him against a brick wall for hours before his extraction. Minutes before the collision, the 24-year-old backstop, known as Peck to his teammates, had attended mass at St. Martin’s Catholic church.

1933      Phil Ball, the millionaire Browns owner, dies of septicemia. Manager Rogers Hornsby will take over the franchise’s reins, staying on as skipper until he is fired in 1937 by Donald Barnes, who purchased the team from the Ball estate last year.

1960      “But immortality is nontransferable. The papers said that the other players, and even the umpires on the field, begged him to come out and acknowledge us in some way, but he never had and did not now. Gods do not answer letters.” – JOHN UPDIKE, author of Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu, published in the New Yorker magazine.

The New Yorker magazine publishes Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu, an article by 28-year-old John Updike chronicling Ted Williams’ last game in the major leagues. The future Pulitzer Prize-winning author, among the 10,000 fans at the fabled game, ends the much-celebrated baseball essay with, “Gods do not answer letters,” as an explanation of the superstar not acknowledging the Fenway faithful after homering in his final major league at-bat.

1967      The A’s name Bay Area native Joe DiMaggio to be their executive vice president and consultant. Oakland owner Charlie Finley uses the ‘Yankee Clipper’ as a part-time hitting coach and public relations advocate for the club, a job the former superstar will quickly become unhappy with, leaving the organization after just two years in the position.

1972      The transplanted A’s, capturing their first championship in 42 years, become the first Bay Area team to win a world title when they defeat the Reds, 3-2, in the seventh game. World Series MVP Gene Tenace, who hit only five home runs in the regular season, connects for four round-trippers during the Fall Classic, including an unprecedented two homers in his first two at-bats in Game 1.

1974      Two well-known outfielders change teams when the Giants send Bobby Bonds to the Yankees for Bobby Murcer. The swap, considered among the biggest one-for-one trades in baseball history, of the next ‘Willie Mays’ (Bonds) for the next ‘Mickey Mantle’ (Murcer) marks the first time two $600,000 players have traded for one another.

1975      In a fitting finish to one of the most classic World Series ever played, the Reds beat the Red Sox in a thrilling Game 7 victory, 4-3. Future Hall of Fame infielder Joe Morgan’s ninth-inning bloop single into center field, scoring Ken Griffey, proves to be the decisive hit in the Fenway Park contest.

1979      Ed Kranepool declares his free agency, ending his 18-year major league career, played entirely with the Mets. The first baseman and pinch-hitter, who signed with the expansion team in 1962 at the age of 17 as an amateur free agent, set franchise records in eight categories, including the most hits (1,418), most games played (1,853), at-bats (5,436), and pinch-hits (90).

1985      At Busch Stadium, Frank White becomes the first American League second baseman to bat cleanup in a World Series contest. Royals manager Dick Howser’s hunch pays off when the 35-year-old infielder slugs a home run and a double to drive in three runs in Kansas City’s 6-3 victory in Game 3 of the Fall Classic.

1986      After dropping the first two games to the Red Sox at Shea Stadium, the Mets even with World Series at Fenway Park. Gary Carter’s two home runs contributed to New York’s 6-2 victory in Game 4 of the Fall Classic.

1997      With the temperature hovering at 35 degrees, the coldest start of any postseason game on record, the Indians’ bats come out smoking in Game 4 of the World Series, scoring three runs in the first and another trio of tallies in the third inning in their 10-3 rout of the Marlins at Jacobs Field. The two rookie starters, Cleveland’s 21-year-old right-hander Jaret Wright and Florida’s 23-year-old southpaw Tony Saunders mark the sixth time two freshman hurlers have opposed one another in the Fall Classic.

2000      The Yankees extend their World Series winning streak to 14 consecutive games, defeating the Mets, 6-5, in a Game 2 contest overshadowed by Roger Clemens throwing the barrel of a shattered bat at Mike Piazza as the Met catcher runs to first. Due to the Rocket’s beaning of the Mets’ superstar in July, the eagerly awaited at-bat results in the confrontation of the two players and the emptying of both benches.

2002      In Game 3 of the World Series, Giants’ P.A. announcer Renel Brooks-Moon becomes the first woman to announce a championship game in any professional sport. The Bay Area native sends the scorecard from the Fall Classic contest to the Hall of Fame.

2003      In Game 4 of the Fall Classic, Alex Gonzalez’s solo home run off Jeff Weaver in the bottom of the 12th gives the Marlins a 4-3 victory over New York and ties the series at two games apiece. The loss ends the Yankees’ extra-inning World Series game-winning streak at seven.

2006      The Spiezios become the first father-and-son combination in baseball history to have appeared in a World Series game as a player for the same franchise. Scott, the Cardinals’ current second baseman, and his father, Ed, a third baseman for the 1967 club, played in the Fall Classic for winning Redbird teams.

2007      Tony La Russa agrees to a two-year contract to continue as the Cardinals manager. During his 12-year tenure in St. Louis, the 63-year-old skipper has compiled a 1,055-887 (.543) record, including six Central Division championships, two NL pennants, and one World Series Championship.

2007      Washington State native Mel Stottlemyre returns to the big leagues as the pitching coach of the Seattle Mariners, accepting a one-year contract to join skipper John McLaren’s staff. The former pitching coach for the Yankees and Mets, who is receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, left the Bronx after the 2005 season, tiring of the criticism from owner George Steinbrenner.

2007      Orioles’ interim manager Dave Trembley has his contract extended through the 2008 season, with a club option for 2009. Since his horrific first game as skipper in June, losing to the Rangers 30-3, the team has a winning record and has not lost more than three in a row.

2008      Jack Zduriencik, the first non-GM selected as Baseball America Executive of the Year, is named the Mariners general manager, the eighth in franchise history. Due to his scouting savvy, the former Brewers vice president and special assistant for player personnel receives credit for Milwaukee’s marked improvement.

2008      For only the third time in World Series history, and the first since 1997, when Jim Palmer faced Gary Nolan, both starting pitchers in Game 1 are under the age of 25. Cole Hamels, the 24-year-old left-hander, gets the victory when the Phillies beat the Rays and Scott Kazmir, their 24-year-old southpaw, at Tropicana Field, 3-2.

2011      In the Cardinals’ 16-7 rout of the Rangers in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, Albert Pujols hits three homers, drives in six runs, and collects five hits, equaling three World Series records. ‘Prince Albert’, who also set a Series mark with 14 total bases, connects on fastballs from three different Texas pitchers, joining Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson for the most round-trippers in a World Series game.

2013      Tim Lincecum agrees to a two-year $35 million deal to stay with the Giants. The 29-year-old fan favorite, a two-time Cy Young winner who pitched a no-hitter this year, has a 4.76 ERA over his last two seasons with San Francisco.

2016      The Cubs win their first pennant since 1945, blanking the Dodgers 5-0 at Wrigley Field in Game 6 of the NLCS. Kyle Hendrick, who goes 7⅓ innings, and Aroldis Chapman combine to face the minimum 27 batters, allowing only two hits and one walk, making it the first time this has occurred in the postseason play since Don Larsen threw a perfect game in the 1956 World Series.

WORLD SERIES HISTORY

1923

New York Yankees (4) vs New York Giants (2)

The term home field advantage took on a whole new meaning in 1923 as baseball’s grand cathedral, Yankees Stadium, opened much to the dismay of the Giants. Although the two-time defending champions would finally reclaim the Polo Grounds for themselves, The House That Ruth Built towered over their yard and featured an enormous seating capacity with an architectural beauty that was second to none. With the addition of a third ballpark, New York had established itself as THE premier city for professional sports entertainment.

A sports columnist from Philadelphia had written that thousands of years in the future archeologists would uncover ruins in the lower Bronx that would resemble that of ancient Rome’s coliseums. The Giants had generously shared their field with the Yankees (and Highlanders) since 1913 but now found themselves standing in the shadow of their cross-town rivals.

Although the Yankees had lost two consecutive World Series to the Giants, they were quickly becoming the more popular of the two. The soon to be penned Bronx Bombers boasted the game’s top player, the largest arena, and the best record in baseball after winning their third American League pennant by a sixteen game margin.

Once again, the Subway Series was on as the Yankees and the Giants met for the third consecutive year. In a strange twist, Giants’ outfielder, Casey Stengel, who would later become one of the most successful and beloved Yankee managers, beat his future team in Game 1 with an inside-the-park home run off of Joe Bush to break a 4-4 tie in the ninth. The Yankees were now winless (eight losses and one tie) in Series games against the Giants, but New York had Babe Ruth and he would have something to say about that.

After a disappointing season plagued with suspensions and poor play in 1922, the Babe was back in action, hitting .394 and sharing the home run title with the Phillies’ Cy Williams (with forty-one). He was in top form for Game 2, hitting home runs in the fourth and fifth innings on the way to a 4-2 victory at the Polo Grounds.

Game 1 hero Casey Stengel once again stole the spotlight in Game 3. Through six innings, the Yankees’ Sam Jones and the Giants’ Art Nehf were locked in a scoreless battle. Then, with one out in the seventh, Stengel homered into the right field stands at Yankee Stadium for the win.

Not to be outdone, the Yankees dominated the next two outings while totaling sixteen runs with twenty-seven hits resulting in 8-4 and 8-1 victories. New York coasted through Games 4 and 5 on the arm of Joe Bush and the bat of Joe Dugan.

Finally, the Yankees had beaten the Giants for their first world championship in their brand new stadium (which featured crowds in excess of 62,000 and over $1 million dollars in ticket sales). In addition, Babe Ruth had finally beaten his post-season demons, hitting three home runs, a triple, a double and two singles while batting .368.
