MLB ROUNDUP: DODGERS TACKLE M’S, LOCK DOWN NL WEST

Max Muncy sparked a five-run rally in the top of the 11th inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their 10th National League West title in the past 11 seasons, defeating the host Seattle Mariners 6-2 on Saturday night.

With Mookie Betts at second to start the 11th, Mariners reliever Gabe Speier (2-2) struck out Freddie Freeman before intentionally walking Will Smith to set up a potential double play. Muncy spoiled that plan by lining a single to center to score Betts with the go-ahead run.

Isaiah Campbell replaced Speier and walked Amed Rosario to load the bases. Chris Taylor then dropped a two-run single into left center to make it 4-1. A Jason Heyward single reloaded the bases before Enrique Hernandez dumped a two-out single into shallow right field to score the final two runs.

Heyward went 4-for-5 with three doubles for the Dodgers.

Ty France had two hits and Mike Ford drove in a run for the Mariners, who failed to make up ground on Houston and Texas in the American League West and dropped a half-game behind Toronto in the race for the American League’s third and final wild-card berth.

Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 6 (13 innings)

Arizona rallied for two runs in the 13th inning thanks to consecutive run-scoring singles by Emmanuel Rivera and Gabriel Moreno to beat Chicago in Phoenix.

Rivera and Moreno hit their singles with two outs off Hayden Wesneski (2-5). After Patrick Wisdom hit a single to move automatic runner Yan Gomes to third, Gomes ran home when Ian Happ hit into a double play against Joe Mantiply (2-2) in the top of the 13th.

Nico Hoerner produced an RBI single in the 11th inning and also generated a run in the 10th for Chicago. Arizona tied things at 5-5 with one out in the 11th on Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s RBI single.

Orioles 8, Rays 0

Grayson Rodriguez pitched eight shutout innings, Gunnar Henderson homered and drove in three runs and Baltimore defeated visiting Tampa Bay to regain sole possession of first place in the American League East.

Henderson had three of Baltimore’s 11 hits and Aaron Hicks and Ramon Urias had two each. In the longest outing of his brief career, Rodriguez (6-4) allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

Rays starter Tyler Glasnow (9-6) allowed six runs on eight hits in four innings, his shortest start of the season for the Rays, who had won nine of 11 games to surge into a first-place tie with the Orioles.

Rockies 9, Giants 5 (Game 1)

Ezequiel Tovar had three hits and tied a career high with four RBIs, Brenton Doyle had two hits and Colorado beat San Francisco in Denver.

Nolan Jones scored three runs, Karl Kauffmann (2-4) tossed four innings of relief and Gavin Hollowell earned his first save for Colorado, which took the first game of a split doubleheader.

LaMonte Wade Jr. homered and Thairo Estrada had four hits for San Francisco, which has dropped two straight games to the Rockies after winning 16 of 17 against them dating back to August 2022.

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 3 (13 innings)

Whit Merrifield hit a walk-off infield single with two outs in the 13th to lift host Toronto past Boston for the second straight day.

Merrifield’s chopper to third baseman Rafael Devers against Mauricio Llovera (1-3) scored automatic runner Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from third base. Toronto’s Chad Green (3-0) earned the win, only issuing an intentional walk in the top half of the 13th in his lone inning of work.

The Blue Jays tied the game with two outs in the ninth thanks to Daulton Varsho’s two-out RBI triple. Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela initially came in on the ball, and it ended up going over his head.

Padres 5, Athletics 2

Rookie Matt Waldron earned his first major league win, Juan Soto drove in two runs and San Diego made it two wins in a row over host Oakland.

Making his fourth big-league start, Waldron (1-3) benefitted from pitching with a lead for his entire 5 1/3 innings, during which he allowed two runs and seven hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Ryan Noda delivered Oakland’s first run in the third with a sacrifice fly. Zack Gelof’s 12th home run of the season, a solo shot, wrapped up the day’s scoring in the sixth.

Marlins 11, Braves 5

Jake Burger slugged a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth, leading host Miami to a big inning and a win over Atlanta.

Burger, who went 3-for-4, hit his homer off reliever Kirby Yates (7-2). Miami’s Jazz Chisholm Jr., who had three steals, belted a grand slam later in the eighth. He is approaching a potential 20-20 season, with 17 homers and 22 steals.

Matt Olson hit his 52nd homer of the season for the Braves, who have dropped back-to-back games to Miami. Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley and Michael Harris II also went deep for Atlanta.

Guardians 2, Rangers 1

Tyler Freeman and Steven Kwan had back-to-back two-out RBI singles in the eighth and Cleveland held on against visiting Texas in the second game of a three-game series.

Kwan, Josh Naylor and Jose Ramirez each had two hits for Cleveland, which has won the first two games of the series and three of four overall. Guardians starter Tanner Bibee departed with one out in the sixth with hip tightness. He allowed one run and five hits.

Rangers starter Dane Dunning scattered six hits over five shutout innings.

Yankees 6, Pirates 3

Giancarlo Stanton and Oswaldo Cabrera homered to help visiting New York down Pittsburgh.

Estevan Florial added a two-run single and Austin Wells had an RBI double for the Yankees, who have won the first two games of the three-game set. New York has also won six of its last seven games overall.

Bryan Reynolds homered and Endy Rodriguez had a sacrifice fly for the Pirates, who are 3-3 in their past six games. Pittsburgh starter Luis L. Ortiz (4-5) gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Royals 10, Astros 8

Salvador Perez and Nelson Velazquez each drove in two runs and host Kansas City tripped up Houston.

Logan Porter belted his first big-league home run, and the Royals extended their winning streak to four games. James McArthur (1-0) got the win, and Hector Neris (6-3) was tagged with the loss.

The Royals snapped a 6-6 tie with three runs in the seventh inning. The Astros closed the gap in the ninth inning on Yordan Alvarez’s RBI double and Jose Abreu’s run-scoring groundout off Carlos Hernandez. Taylor Clarke came in to record the final out for his second save of the season.

Brewers 9, Nationals 5

Mark Canha hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift host Milwaukee over Washington.

Canha went 3-for-5 with five RBIs as the Brewers won for the fifth time in their last six games despite squandering a four-run lead. Canha’s 11th homer of the season came off Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan (7-5).

Joey Meneses went 3-for-4 and Luis Garcia homered for the Nationals, who have lost five games in a row.

White Sox 7, Twins 6

Eloy Jimenez and Gavin Sheets each hit a home run, and Chicago held on for a win over visiting Minnesota.

Tim Anderson and Andrew Benintendi added one RBI apiece for Chicago, which snapped a four-game losing streak. White Sox right-hander Touki Toussaint (4-7) limited the Twins to one run on three hits in five innings. Tanner Banks escaped the ninth to earn his first career save.

Royce Lewis went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run to lead Minnesota. Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez (10-8) gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings.

Reds 3, Mets 2

Christian Encarnacion-Strand had two hits, including a two-run homer, as visiting Cincinnati maintained its grip on the third and final National League wild-card spot with a win over New York.

TJ Friedl had two hits and scored a run for the Reds, who have won the first two games of the three-game series and five of their last six overall. Daniel Duarte (3-0), the second of five Cincinnati pitchers, tossed 1 1/3 hitless innings to get the win.

Ronny Mauricio had two hits, including an RBI single, for the Mets, who fell to 7-7 this month. Francisco Alvarez had two hits, including a run-scoring double.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 1

Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run homer to power visiting Philadelphia past St. Louis.

Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas drove in the other runs for the Phillies, who earned their second straight victory over the Cardinals. Phillies starting pitcher Ranger Suarez (3-6) held the Cardinals to one run on four hits and four walks in six innings.

Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas (7-12) allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings. St. Louis drew eight walks in the game but left 13 runners on base.

Rockies 5, Giants 2 (Game 2)

Ezequiel Tovar, Kris Bryant, Brendan Rodgers and Charlie Blackmon each had two hits, and Colorado beat San Francisco to sweep a doubleheader in Denver.

Victor Vodnik (1-0) pitched two-plus innings and Tyler Kinley earned his fourth save for Colorado, which earned its first series win from a National League West opponent this season. The Rockies earned their fifth straight victory.

Wilmer Flores and Patrick Bailey had two hits for San Francisco, which trails Cincinnati and Arizona by 2 1/2 games for the final NL wild card.

Tigers 5, Angels 4 (10 innings)

Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs — including the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning single — Zack Short blasted a three-run homer and Detroit defeated Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.

Cabrera knocked in automatic runner Kerry Carpenter against Jose Soriano (1-3) after Detroit squandered a three-run lead in the ninth inning. Detroit’s Sawyer Gipson-Long struck out 11 in his second major league start.

Nolan Schanuel hit his first career homer for the Angels, who have lost four straight games. Jared Walsh supplied a two-run homer.

But the Eagles (1-2, 0-1) stormed back. THEEGALA STILL LEADS FORTINET, WHILE JUSTIN THOMAS INCHES CLOSER AT SILVERADO

NAPA, Calif. (AP) Justin Thomas continued up the leaderboard Saturday at the Fortinet Championship with a 7-under 65 that matched the best score of the day and moved the former No. 1 player within two shots of leader Sahith Theegala.

Theegala, in search of his first PGA Tour victory, had four birdies on the back nine, then holed a 9-footer for par on No. 18 for a 67 and a 17-under 199 total.

Cam Davis birdied his last four holes for a 65 to join Thomas and S.H. Kim (69) at 15 under. Kim had shared the lead with Theegala heading into the third round at Silverado Resort, but had to scramble after consecutive bogeys on the back nine.

Matt Kuchar, seeking his first tour win since 2019, also had a 65 and was three shots off the lead at 14 under. Eric Cole (68) also was 14 under.

Thomas had five birdies and holed out of a bunker for eagle on the par-5 15th.

A member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, Thomas says his game still isn’t as sharp as he’d prefer, but is encouraged that he’s scoring and in contention at the first stop on the FedEx Fall schedule.

“I just felt like I was not very sharp today in terms of my actual golf game,” Thomas said. “Felt like I had a handful of wedges that I should have hit closer, a couple putts that I feel like I could have hit a little bit better, and I shot 7 under. To me, being in contention with I feel like the golf that I’ve had this week is more encouraging than anything.”

With a large throng of fans following him around the course, Theegala was erratic off the tee and was also forced to do a lot of scrambling. He was 1 under for the day through 11 holes then made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 to move into a tie with Kuchar and Thomas. He took the lead alone with birdies on the par-5 15th and par-3 17th.

“I really stayed patient at the start of the round,” Theegala said. “The big key for me is just try to keep it in the fairway, which I haven’t done a great job the last three days and I feel like I’m just scrambling. I feel like if I’m in the fairway, it’s almost feels like a bonus.”

Two-time defending champion Max Homa (70) was tied for 11th at 10 under.

Kuchar drew the most attention following his best round of the tournament. The 45-year-old had four birdies on the back nine including a chip-in out of the short rough on No. 17. Kuchar closed his day with a long putt for par on No. 18, drawing loud cheers and chants of “Kuch! Kuch!” from the crowd.

Kuchar had his best day of the tournament off the tee, hitting eight of 14 fairways which led to him getting to the greens for easier putts.

“This course is playing firm and fast, and when it’s that way stopping the ball on the green trying to get a ball to stop close to the hole, it’s tough,” Kuchar said. “For the most part it requires you around here to be in the fairway and try to be aggressive. I found a lot of fairways today.”

HAMLIN WINS AT BRISTOL AS REIGNING NASCAR CHAMPION JOEY LOGANO ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFFS

(AP) — The best driver to never win a NASCAR championship believes he can lose that tag this year.

At least that’s what Denny Hamlin told the Bristol Motor Speedway crowd as they booed his third win of the year, 51st of his career, and third in the prestigious short track Saturday night race.

“It’s our year. I just feel we’ve got it all put together,” Hamlin said. “Nothing to stop us at this point.”

Hamlin has won three Daytona 500s and most of NASCAR’s crown jewel races, but he has never won a Cup title in 18 years with Joe Gibbs Racing. He signed an extension this month and was among the strongest cars in the first round of the playoffs.

He is third behind William Byron of Hendrick Motorsports and Gibbs teammate Martin Truex Jr. with the points reset for NASCAR’s second round.

Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick were both eliminated from title contention as both NASCAR champions failed to advance out of the first round. Logano became the first reigning champion eliminated in the first round when he crashed early in the third stage and finished 34th.

He was watching as a spectator as former Gibbs teammate Hamlin celebrated.

Harvick, who is retiring at the end of the season, also was eliminated after finishing five laps down in 29th. Harvick was the first driver in 2014 to win the championship in this elimination format.

“We’ve been like that all year, hit or miss, and tonight we just missed by a mile,” Harvick said. “I’ve had some good days, some bad days, but that’s definitely the worst day with fenders. I didn’t really have many expectations, as up and down as the year has been. It is what it is, that’s probably what we deserved.”

Also eliminated were Daytona 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Michael McDowell, despite finishing sixth. Three Ford teams were eliminated, and Stenhouse drives a Chevrolet.

“It wasn’t enough. We were in a must-win situation,” McDowell said. “This is a learning experience. We’ll learn from this, get ready for next year.”

For Hamlin, the booing was loud when he stopped his No. 11 Toyota at the finish line. He collected the checkered flag then verbally sparred with the angry spectators.

“Everyone like a winner, right?” he at first said of the jeers.

He confidently boasted “this is our year” for a championship, then addressed the crowd directly.

“I beat your favorite driver,” he taunted.

“Who would that be?” asked the announcer.

“All of them,” Hamlin said as he headed off to celebrate, likely with the 23XI Racing team he founded, after Bubba Wallace drove his way into the second round with a 14th-place finish.

Hamlin’s jawing with crowds has gone on all season, spilled onto social media, and began at Bristol even before he collected the checkered flag. At Bristol the drivers introduce themselves, and as he was booed making his entrance, he didn’t bother giving his name.

“You know,” he smiled and walked off the stage.

Wallace gave Hamlin both of Hamlin’s 23XI Racing cars spots in the next round by running a clean race. He joined Tyler Reddick, winner last week at Kansas, as 23XI drivers to join their team owner in the next round.

Wallace also was booed and quoted recent U.S. Women’s Open winner Coco Gauff for motivating him despite the discouragement.

“God, I love that (stuff),” Wallace said of the boos. “Counted us out. Like Coco Gauff said, ‘All they are doing is adding fuel to the fire.’ I love it.”

He celebrated with team co-owner Michael Jordan, who watched from Wallace’s pit stand. Wallace, who is last in the now 12-driver field, said he was “mentally exhausted” after advancing in the playoffs. He slumped to the side of his Toyota for a breather.

“I’m wore out. Gave it our all there. Battled hard and executed. That’s what you got to do,” Wallace said. “We know next week’s a reset. We just got to go out and have some fun.”

Logano was eliminated just after the halfway point when he drove the No. 22 Ford to the garage with broken parts that were likely catastrophic to his season. The two-time champion was 12th and on the bubble of elimination when he was collected in the crash.

Logano’s car was damaged after he ran into Corey LaJoie, who was running 12th when LaJoie spun into Logano’s path. Logano took his car to pit road, but once it was determined his damage needed to be addressed in the garage, Logano’s night was over.

“We just we’re fast enough. You can’t go down a lap down, you’re at the back at Bristol on a restart and they wreck in front of you, and you get caught up,” Logano said. “It’s our own fault. We didn’t go fast enough in our Mustang.”

NASCAR’s first playoff elimination race was paused by rain for nearly 15 minutes at the start of the second stage.

SMITH TO SPIRE

Two new Cup drivers were announced at Bristol this weekend, with Kaulig Racing first promoting Daniel Hemric into one of its two seats next year. Trackhouse Racing then said it has signed Truck Series champion Zane Smith to a multi-year contract and will loan him to Spire Motorsports in 2024.

Trackhouse eventually plans to run three full-time cars, but isn’t ready to do so next season; Spire will put Smith in a third car and bought the charter needed to do so from Live Fast Motorsports.

Smith is trying to win a second consecutive Truck Series title before his move to NASCAR’s top series. He’ll be teammates at Spire with Corey LaJoie, who this summer signed an extension with Spire, but the rest of the lineup and Smith’s number is still to be determined. Spire fields two cars right now with LaJoie and Ty Dillon.

UP NEXT

NASCAR opens the second round of the playoffs next Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway, which has only one Cup race this year for the first time since 2004. Tyler Reddick won the race a year ago driving for Richard Childress Racing.

INDIANS DROP SATURDAY BULLPEN GAME IN OMAHA, 9-2

PAPILLION, Neb. – The Indianapolis Indians had their three-game winning streak snapped by the Omaha Storm Chasers on Saturday night at Werner Park, 9-2.

After right-hander Kyle Nicolas opened the game for the Indians with a scoreless first inning, the Storm Chasers (64-74, 26-40) got to long-man Wil Crowe (L, 1-1) out of the Indians bullpen in the second with singles from designated hitter Tyler Gentry and right fielder Nate Eaton before catcher Tyler Cropley notched his first Triple-A hit and RBI with a two-run triple to right center field.

The Indians (66-75, 33-34) got runs across in both the third and fourth inning to tie the game against Omaha starter Jonathan Bowlan (W, 6-6). The run in the third came on an opposite field single from right fielder Canaan Smith-Njigba, who is now hitting .400 (20-for-50) in the month of September and has reached base safely in 11 of 14 games after a 2-for-4 night. In the fourth, designated hitter Mason Martin golfed his second Triple-A homer this year out to straight-away right field to knot the game at 2-2.

Omaha jumped ahead after a run in the fourth, and added insurance in the fifth thanks to a three-run home run from left fielder John Rave. A run in the seventh on a wild pitch and two more in the eighth put away the Indians for good.

The Indians and Storm Chasers conclude their six-game set on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET at Werner Park. The starting pitching matchup will be a repeat of the series opener, with right-hander Roansy Contreras (0-0, 3.28) getting the ball for Indianapolis against Omaha southpaw Drew Parrish (4-6, 7.63). The Indians then return home to Victory Field to kick off the final series of the season against the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday at 6:35 PM ET.

COMEBACK FALLS FEET SHORT AT LUCAS OIL

INDIANAPOLIS – It was a time for aggression and execution, for daring and tenacity. It was a time to say, in so many words, enough of this, let’s get it on.

And so the Indiana Hoosiers (1-2) did Saturday afternoon against Louisville (3-0) at Lucas Oil Stadium. A 21-0 halftime deficit became a one-possession thriller.

“Our guys bowed up and showed a lot of fight to give ourselves a chance,” head coach Tom Allen said.

It wasn’t enough in a 21-14 loss, and quarterback Tayven Jackson blamed himself. His diving attempt at a tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter came up 18 inches short.

“I let the team down,” he said.

The redshirt freshman didn’t, of course, but that mattered little to him in the immediate post-game aftermath.

On third and eight, IU trailing by seven, the game clock ticking under five minutes, Jackson ran for opportunity, diving for the end zone pylon. He found it, but only after his knee touched down just short of the goal line.

“I thought I had it,” Jackson said. “I don’t want to watch (replays). We lost because I didn’t get in.”

He paused.

“Growing up as a kid, it’s in the back of your mind, going for the winning touchdown. It’s like 3-2-1 dive in the end zone. Finally, you get that moment, and it doesn’t go as planned. It’s hard to swallow.”

The Hoosiers still had a fourth-down chance for a 21-21 tie. They called a timeout to consider either a quarterback sneak or a power run. Either would have worked, Allen said, if executed properly.

They chose the power run. Running back Josh Henderson was stopped short of the goal line.

“It didn’t work,” Allen said. “When that happens, you wish you had done something else.

“You have to execute. You knock them off the line and score. We didn’t execute it. That’s frustrating. I love our coaches and team. We just have to keep battling.”

Jackson just missed his first career 300-yard passing game. He finished 24-for-34 for 299 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

“You could see him growing up,” Allen said. “He made some first-half mistakes from being young. Those will get better. You can see what he can become.

“I love the fact he makes plays. He’s able to create and extend plays. Those are things you can’t teach. He has a lot of confidence and moxie. Those are showing up.”

It showed in the way Jackson completed passes to eight different receivers.

“We had conversations about what he likes and wants,” said receiver Cam Camper, who caught three passes for 74 yards. “I told him I’m here to be in the spot for you, He runs the show.

“The whole game he was calm. He didn’t let anything rattle him. We just follow his lead and let him do what he does.”

Jaylin Lucas caught a career-high 10 passes for a career-high 98 yards, and was disappointed.

“I needed to have done more. I should have done more.”

TURNOVERS LEAD TO LOSS VS. SYRACUSE

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A late comeback effort fell short as the Purdue football team dropped a 35-20 decision to Syracuse at Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday night.

The Boilermakers (1-2) put themselves in an early hole after committing four first-half turnovers, going into the break trailing 21-7. Hudson Card threw for a career-high 323 yards in the loss, completing 32 of 46 passes (69.6%) for a touchdown and an interception while also tallying a rushing score.

Dillon Thieneman continued to impress as a defensive leader in his freshman campaign, posting a team-best 14 tackles (10 solos), the most by a Boilermaker since Jaylan Alexander had 19 in the 2021 Music City Bowl win over Tennessee (Dec. 30, 2021). Sanoussi Kane finished second on the team with eight tackles, the second highest total of his career.

Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen highlighted the offense with career highs in receiving yards (114) and catches (10), leading the team in both categories. It was his first career game eclipsing the century mark in receiving. Deion Burks scored his third touchdown of the season on a two-yard catch in the second quarter.

The offense put together back-to-back touchdown drives in the third and fourth quarters, the second of which lowered the Purdue deficit to 28-20 after a Tyrone Tracy Jr. one-yard rushing score capped off a 14-play, 75-yard drive. Tracy has found the end zone on the ground in every game this season.

The defense totaled a season-high four sacks, with OC Brothers, Scotty Humpich, Kydran Jenkins and Nic Scourton each notching one apiece. Brothers finished third on the team with a season-best six stops, including two for a loss.

Defensive back Cam Allen intercepted his second pass of the season in the third quarter. The Bluefield, Va., native moved into sole control of third place on the Boilermakers’ career charts with his 12th career pick.

NOTES

• Purdue now trails Syracuse in the all-time series, 2-1.

• The Boilermakers have 21 points off four takeaways on the season.

• The defense amassed a season-high four sacks.

• Seven different receivers caught a pass in Card’s career-high 323-yard effort.

UP NEXT

The Boilermakers will open their Big Ten slate on a short week against Wisconsin on Friday, Sept. 22 at Ross-Ade Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on FS1.

BUTLER BEATS WABASH ON SATURDAY NIGHT 47-21

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler recorded 442 yards of total offense to score 47 points in a 26-point victory over Wabash on Saturday night in front of 6,271 fans at the Sellick Bowl. The Bulldogs are now 2-0 at home and have scored 40+ points in each of their last two games.

The first points of the night went to the home team as Bushka kept the ball for a one-yard rushing TD with 10:09 to play in the opening quarter. The 7-0 lead would run into the second frame where each team came up with multiple scoring drives.

Ethan Loss snagged a 30-yard TD pass from Bushka to make the game 14-0 and a seven-yard rush from Jyran Mitchell put BU out in front 21-0. Loss led all BU receivers with four catches and 73 receiving yards while Mitchell paced all BU backs with 82 yards on the ground off 13 carries.

The Little Giants fought back with 14 points in the final 3:43 of the first half. A fake punt extended a drive that ended with a nine-yard TD pass and Wabash would use a trick play to score a TD with 16 seconds remaining to get back within seven of Butler at 21-14. BU pushed the ball down the field just before half time and Luka Zurak would make the score 24-14 with a 48-yard field goal.

Butler’s defense was lights out in the second half and a Bulldog safety would help the home team score the first points of the second half. Later in the game, Nick Bafia returned an interception 66 yards down the sideline for the final score of the contest.

Between those two plays, Butler got a four-yard TD rush from Ershod Jasey II. The first rushing TD of his career came on a night where the running back collected 63 yards on the ground. Bushka and Luke Wooten also connected on a 22-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter. Wooten now has a TD in two-straight games.

Bafia did it all on Saturday night by adding a team-high 11 tackles. Danny Orgler was equally as impressive up front with 2.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a QB hurry.

With the win, the Bulldogs now move ahead to the PFL portion of the 2023 schedule. The Bulldogs will hit the road to play at Stetson on Sept. 23. Kick-off is slated for 12 PM.

QUICK STRIKE OFFENSE MOVES IRISH TO 4-0

The University of Notre Dame football team out-scored Central Michigan 20-3 in the second half to secure its fourth victory of the season, 41-17, on a partly cloudy day at sold-out Notre Dame Stadium (77,622).

The Irish have now scored over 40 points in a program-best five consecutive games dating back to the 2022 Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina to cap last season. The 182 points scored in Notre Dame’s first four games this season are the fourth-most in the history of the program.

Sam Hartman led the Irish offensive attack through the air with 330 yards passing and notching his first career 300-yard performance in a Notre Dame uniform. He threw three touchdowns, including a 75-yard strike to Tobias Merriweather and a 76-yard toss to Chris Tyree. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Audric Estimé paced the overall Notre Dame rushing attack with a career-best 176 yards on 20 carries with one touchdown.

Jack Kiser, starting in place of an injured JD Bertrand at linebacker, led the team with a career-best 10 tackles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

On the fourth Irish play of the game Hartman dropped back and found a wide open Tobias Merriweather streaking down the left sidelines along the Notre Dame bench for a 75-yard throw and catch. It marked the longest reception of Merriweather’s long career and the longest toss in Hartman’s time at Notre Dame (for a short time).

Bolstered by a borderline roughing the passer penalty, CMU drove six plays for 65 yards on its first possession to tie the game with 7:22 left in the first quarter.

Notre Dame answered with a third-down conversion pass to Chris Tyree, an 11-yard pass to Jayden Thomas then three nice runs from Gi’Bran Payne (10 yards), Estimé (11) and Jeremiyah Love (eight) set the Irish up with third and two.

Estimé rushed for the first down which was reviewed by the replay booth. After an initial announcement that the call on the field stood (first down), the referee returned to the replay monitor and announced that the run would be marked short.

It might be remembered as the first replay review of a replay review in college football history and forced the Irish into a fourth down attempt. Estimé left no doubt on the play, however, busting through a huge hole on the left side of the Irish line for a 17-yard touchdown run.

Javonte Jean-Baptiste single-handedly ended CMU’s next scoring drive in three consecutive plays. He started with a tackle at the line, then chased down the Chippewa runner for a short gain. On third down, he came up behind the CMU quarterback to force an errant throw and punt.

Notre Dame quickly struck back on the second play of the next series. Hartman found a wide open Tyree galloping behind the defense, laid a beautiful pass on his fingertips and the Irish senior scampered into the end zone untouched for a 76 yards later.

After trading two possessions back and forth, Notre Dame’s offense fell out of its rhythm and the Chippewas took advantage to cut the lead to seven at the break.

CMU’s nine-play, 83-yard drive to cap the first half was aided by another questionable penalty flag. The Irish were whistled for pass interference after the Chippewa receiver tripped over his own feet in the end zone, placing the ball at the two-yard line. It would require four attempts, but Central Michigan eventually pushed the ball into the end zone to make the score 21-14 at halftime.

Notre Dame’s quick strike offense showed up again to start the second half. Estimé set the tone with a rumbling 21-yard run on the first play. One snap later, Hartman found Thomas behind the defense for 39 yards down to the Chippewa three-yard line. Hartman eventually capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

Central Michigan continued to battle. Converting a third and long and a fourth and short, the Chippewas drove to the Irish Notre Dame five-yard line. On second down, Marist Liufau made a great one-on-one play on a CMU outside run for no gain. Then on third down, Jean-Baptiste rushed into the quarterback’s face to force a throw that was batted down by Benjamin Morrison in the end zone. CMU settled for a field goal to make the Notre Dame lead 28-17.

Notre Dame followed up with two more field goals of their own. A Rico Flores Jr. 42-yard reception set up a 50-yard Spencer Shrader kick. After the Irish defense forced a stop, Estimé and Jadarian Price runs moved the Irish to the Chippewa 20-yard line. The CMU defense responded, however, and forced a Shrader 31-yard effort to push the lead to 34-17.

The defense made another stop to get the ball back in the now cruising Irish offense. Estimé broke off three great runs of 22, 13 and 41 yards – two of the runs including hurdles over possible tackles – to set Notre Dame up at the doorstep.

Hartman then found Staes for a four-yard touchdown toss to cap the game’s scoring.

CARDINALS TOP SYCAMORES 45-7 TO RETAKE VICTORY BELL

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State managed 425 yards in total offense and got three turnovers from its defense to overwhelm Indiana State with a 45-7 rout in its home opener at Scheumann Stadium.

In front of 15,054 on Family Weekend, the Cardinals got 177 rushing yards and one of five offensive touchdowns from transfer running back Marquez Cooper. For Cooper, a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection last year at Kent State, it was the second-best rushing game of his career and his 14th game over 100 yards.

Cooper crossed the 100-yard barrier in the first half while Ball State clung to a 10-0 lead at intermission. After a scoreless first period, fellow running back Rico Barfield opened the scoring with a 16-yard screen pass from Kadin Semonza. Freshman placekicker Jackson Courville connected on a 23-yard field goal with 94 seconds before intermission.

Barfield, who added 48 rushing yards on just five carries, made the score 17-0 with his second TD of the day, scoring on the longest run of his career from 24 yards. That capped a quick, three-play, 55-yard drive in which Cooper had his longest run of year, 31 yards. Indiana State connected on a 49-yard scoring pass from Elijah Owens to Dakota Caton only a minute later, but it was all Cardinals the rest of the way.

Cooper reached the end zone for the first time with Ball State in the opening moments of a dominant fourth quarter that was dictated by the defense. On the second play following Cooper’s TD, senior cornerback Red Potts snagged his second interception of the season to set up a two-play scoring drive with Semonza hitting tight end Tanner Koziol on back-to-back plays. The 8-yard score made it 31-7.

Indiana State drove 41 yards on four plays in its next series, but Loren Strickland’s strip-sack resulted in Keionte Newson’s 66-yard fumble return and touchdown to extend the onslaught. After the teams traded possessions, Ball State’s punt was muffed by the Sycamores. Dalton Elrod fell on the fumble to set up the Cardinals’ final score – a 1-yard plunge by Charlie Spegal with 3:13 to play.

Newson had a career-high eight tackles to pace Ball State defenders for the second straight week, to lead a Cardinal defense that totaled four sacks among eight tackles for loss. Offensively, Semonza completed 17 of 22 passes for 137 yards and a pair of scores, but the game was controlled on the ground. The Cardinals’ 288 rushing yards represented their best rushing effort since the home opener of 2020 with 304 yards against Eastern Michigan.

Ball State hopes to continue its momentum and avenge a road loss from last season when it hosts Georgia Southern next Saturday. Kickoff is 2:00 p.m.

BALL STATE TOPS INDIANA STATE IN THE BATTLE FOR THE BLUE KEY VICTORY BELL

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State utilized a 28-point fourth quarter to pull away from Indiana State in the Battle for the Blue Key Victory Bell on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals topped the visiting Sycamores 45-7 at Scheumann Stadium.

Indiana State (0-3) pulled the game back within reach midway through the third quarter as freshman quarterback Elijah Owens found wide receiver Dakota Caton behind the Cardinals secondary for a 49-yard touchdown. The Sycamore score pulled ISU back within 17-7 and appeared to halt the Ball State (1-2) momentum on the field.

The Cardinal defense ensured Ball State would claim the first matchup between the two programs since the 2014 season as BSU forced three ISU turnovers, including Keionte Newson’s 66-yard fumble return for a score to record the win.

Owens made the most of his Sycamore debut behind center as the Jacksonville, Ill. native became the first ISU true freshman to start a game since 2014. He finished 9-of-21 for 157 yards through the air completing passes to five different receivers including the touchdown pass to Caton. He added several tough runs with 10 carries for 17 yards in the loss.

Tee Hodge (nine carries, 46 yards) and Plez Lawrence (six carries, 39 yards) did most of ISU’s damage on the ground as the Sycamores racked up a season-high 104 rushing yards in the game. Harry Van Dyne hauled in three passes for a career-high 80 yards, while Caton added three catches for 59 yards in the passing game.

Maddix Blackwell was ISU’s leading tackler for the third consecutive game as the redshirt sophomore posted a game-high 12 tackles and added a fumble recovery. Garret Ollendieck added nine tackles, 1.0 sacks, and forced a fumble, while Antoineo Harris Jr. and Gianini Belizaire also recorded sacks in the contest.

Kadin Semonza paced the Ball State offense going 17-of-22 through the air for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Marzquez Cooper recorded 22 carries for 177 yards and a score, while Tanner Koziol posted team-highs in receptions (7), yards (60), and added a touchdown.

Newson was the Cardinals’ leading tackler on the game with eight stops while adding his fumble recovery score. Tyler Potts added an interception that led to a Ball State touchdown, while Jack Sape finished with 1.5 sacks in the win.

How They Scored

Kadin Semonza found Rico Barfield for a 16-yard touchdown catch with 12:13 left in the second quarter to put Ball State on the scoreboard and give the Cardinals the 7-0 lead.

Ball State took the 10-0 lead into the half as Jackson Courville connected on a 23-yard field goal with 1:34 remaining to cap a nine-play, 69-yard drive.

Barfield found the end zone for the second time in the contest with 6:45 left in the third quarter as the running back took a handoff around the right side for a 24-yard touchdown run to give the Cardinals the 17-0 lead.

The Sycamores found the end zone on the ensuing drive as Elijah Owens found Dakota Caton behind the Ball State defense for a 49-yard touchdown pass at the 5:48 mark in the third quarter to pull ISU back within 17-7. The two-play drive featured a 12-yard carry by Owens on the first play to set up the Caton score.

Marquez Cooper scored from 11 yards out with a touchdown run with 13:12 left in the fourth quarter to end a 13-play, 75-yard drive to give Ball State the 24-7 lead.

Tanner Koziol added to the BSU lead with 11:32 remaining in the contest with an eight-yard touchdown reception from Semonza following a Sycamore turnover.

Keionte Newson capitalized on another Indiana State turnover with a 66-yard scoop-and-score fumble recovery at the 9:20 mark in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals the 38-7 lead.

Ball State would cap the scoring at 45-7 following Charlie Spegal’s one-yard touchdown plunge with 3:13 left in the game to provide the final margin.

Inside the Numbers

Indiana State posted season-highs in both rushing (104) and passing (157) yards in the contest.

The Sycamores held possession for 26:59 in the contest with 12 first downs including converting on 6-of-15 third-down attempts.

ISU added its first multi-sack game of the season with three quarterback takedowns in the contest.

The Sycamore kick return game was strong with Dakota Caton (Long of 40) and Zavion Taylor (Long of 33) combining to return four kicks for 110 yards to set up ISU with solid field position during the contest.

ISU aired the ball out in the contest averaging a season-high 17.4 yards per completion in the game over nine completed passes.

Ball State held the advantage in the run game as the Cardinals utilized 42 carries for 288 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Marquez Cooper was the primary recipient with 22 carries for 177 yards and a touchdown in the game.

The Cardinals won the turnover battle forcing three Sycamore miscues to Ball State’s one.

The Sycamores went 0-for-2 in field goal attempts in the contest in the loss.

News & Notes

Elijah Owens became the first true freshman quarterback to play for Indiana State since 2021 when Cade Chambers took snaps against South Dakota and Western Illinois.

Owens taking the first snap made him the first Sycamore true freshman quarterback to earn the start since Matt Adam started the 2014 Homecoming game against Illinois State back on October 11, 2014.

The Indiana State-Ball State game saw the continuation of the Battle for the Blue Key Victory Bell dating back to 1940. The Cardinals claimed the bell back for the first time since the 2014 season and third time since 2002.

Maddix Blackwell recorded his second double-digit tackling game of the 2023 season in Saturday’s loss. He is currently averaging 10.7 tackles per game with two fumble recoveries on the year.

Garret Ollendieck was in the backfield constantly with two forced fumbles in the contest, including the hit that led to an Indiana State field goal attempt in the second quarter.

Harry Van Dyne set new single-game highs in receiving yards (80) and longest reception (41) surpassing his previous highs set last season against Illinois State (66 & 26).

*****************MARIAN FOOTBALL*******************

SIX KNIGHTS SCORE TOUCHDOWNS AS MARIAN DROP 45 POINTS ON OLIVET NAZARENE

INDIANAPOLIS – Paced by a career passing day for Zach Bundalo and an defense and special teams unit that recorded three touchdowns, the Marian football team rolled to a comfortable 45-14 home victory against Olivet Nazarene. Marian moves to 3-0 on the year following the win, as they enter their bye week.

The game began with both teams punting away their opening drives, but after forcing a second three-and-out, the Marian offense got rolling. Zach Bunadlo completed three passes to his tight ends Drew Byerly and Nick Miller on a series aided by a pass interference penalty, with Byerly capping off the series with a seven yard receiving touchdown. The 7-0 lead would not last long however, as Olivet Nazarene got on the board thanks in part to their special teams, as Evan Leake raced 85-yards through Marian’s coverage unit to tie the game.

Marian was unable to respond immediately as their offense was forced to punt on one drive, while a fumble stalled out another, but the defense picked up the slack. Marian forced a third punt in the opening quarter, and with 4:41 remaining in the quarter Olivet made a costly mistake, as Cameron Crouch threw an interception to the Knights’ Tyler Bukur. Bukur, who intercepted the ball standing in the end zone after the Tigers were backed up, posted his second career touchdown, pushing Marian in front 14-7.

The Knights aimed for more points as they had the ball to start the second quarter, but were unable to extend their final series of the first quarter as Bundalo threw an interception. The Tigers made a long march down the field after the pick, but turned the ball over on downs, as Joe Apata produced a fourth down sack to give Marian the ball back. Wasting little time, on the ensuing play Bundalo unwinded on a deep pass to Tirae Spence, as the receiver caught the ball in stride and raced 89 yards to the end zone to make it a 21-7 game.

The lead continued to grow for Marian with scores on each of their next two drives in the game, as Christian Hunter charged in on a 13-yard run, and Cole Yost converted a 37-yard field goal after Nate Frey forced a fumble. The pair of scores gave Marian a 31-7 advantage, but Olivet Nazarene had one last possession, going 67 yards in 10 plays to score 22 seconds before halftime. Instead of kicking short, the Tigers elected to kick deep to Jalen Jennings, who made it hurt as the all-time leader in program history for kick return yards raced 91 yards down the visiting sideline for his fourth career kick return touchdown. Jennings’ late score capped the first half fireworks, as Marian led 38-14 at the break.

The scoring stalled in the third quarter as Marian and Olivet Nazarene both punted the ball away on each of their drives in the period. Marian would start a third series in the quarter with 3:18 remaining, and made progress moving down the field as Bundalo connected with Jake Reichard and CJ Young for first downs, but a sack and penalty stalled the momentum as the fourth quarter began. Despite not getting points from the offense, Marian added a final touchdown from their defense, as Reis Walker jumped a pass from Crouch and recorded his first career interception, racing 20 yards into the end zone untouched for the final score of the game.

The Knights defense continued to pitch their second half shutout forcing a pair of punts, while Peyton Trexler made the final big play with his fourth quarter interception, highlighting the end of the 45-14 win.

Marian picked up 489 yards of offense in the win, led by Bundalo’s career passing day as the senior moved into third all-time in school history for passing yards. Bundalo threw for 395 yards, hitting his favorite target Tirae Spence four times for 148 yards and a score. Jennings finished the game with 226 all-purpose yards, gaining 146 in the return game and 80 through the air. Keagan La Belle finished as the leading rusher with 38 yards, while William Gibson and Christian Hunter each rushed for over 30 yards.

Nate Frey led the Knights’ defensive efforts with nine combined tackles, while Jake Paris had seven. Frey made a forced fumble and added a pass breakup in the win, with Dwight Lewis III recovering a fumble for the second straight week. Roman Parker-Molden was one of four players with a tackle for loss in the win.

Marian will be off next week as their bye week comes having finished non-conference play, and will return to action on September 30 for their Homecoming game against Lawrence Tech. Kickoff for the final game of the month comes at 1:05 p.m.

*******TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY*******

1900      At Philadelphia Park, Tommy Corcoran leaves his shortstop position and digs around the third base coaching box with his spikes. The Reds’ captain uncovers a metal box with an electrical device with attached wires inside, most likely used by the Phillies in a sophisticated scheme to steal signs.

1903      In a game shortened due to darkness, the Americans clinch their first AL pennant when they beat the Cleveland Naps at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds, 4-3. Boston will defeat the Pirates, five games to 3, in the first World Series the fledgling circuit plays against an established National League foe.

1912      At Brooklyn’s Washington Park, Casey Stengel makes an impressive major league debut when he collects four hits, drives in two runs, and swipes a pair of bases in the Dodgers’ 7-3 victory against the Pirates. The likable outfielder from Kansas City finishes the season with a .316 batting average (18/57) in his first 17 games with Brooklyn.

1916      George Sisler outduels the Senators’ legend Walter Johnson, 1-0. The game will mark Gorgeous George’s last big-league pitching victory; however, the former Browns’ hurler will become a member of the Hall of Fame as a first baseman, finishing his 15-year major league career with a .340 lifetime batting average.

1920      For the first time in major league history, two players hit for the cycle on the same day when Tigers outfielder Bobby Veach, who goes 6-for-6, and Giants first baseman George Burns accomplish the unique feat. This rare event will not occur on the same day again until 2008 when Diamondback shortstop Stephen Drew and Mariner third baseman Adrian Beltre each collect a single, double, triple, and a home run in different games played on September 1.

1930      Earl Averill, with three consecutive home runs, drives in eight runs in the Indians’ 13-7 victory over the Senators at Cleveland’s League Park. The Tribe’s 28-year-old center fielder adds another homer in the nightcap to set an American League record with 11 RBIs in the twin bill.

1938      In the top of the seventh inning of the Cubs’ 4-0 victory over New York at the Polo Grounds, Ripper Collins hits his last career home run, finishing with 135 round-trippers during his nine-year tenure in the major leagues. The Chicago first baseman will remain the all-time switch-hitter home run leader for 18 years until Yankee slugger Mickey Mantle surpasses his total in 1956.

1939      American League President Will Harridge overturns umpire Cal Hubbard’s decision to award the Yankees a 9-0 forfeited victory over the Red Sox, ordering the contest to be replayed from the seventh inning. The Red Sox fans, protesting the deliberate outs New York was making to take advantage of the 6:30 Sunday curfew, had thrown a barrage of garbage onto the playing field, making it impossible to continue the Fenway Park contest.

1941      In front of only 3,585 fans in St. Louis, twenty-year-old Stan Musial makes his major league debut against Boston, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. ‘Stan the Man’ will collect 3,630 hits during his 22-year Hall of Fame career, 1815 hits at home, and 1815 on the road.

1947      Not waiting for the end of the season, The Sporting News, in a full-page splash in today’s issue, names Dodger Jackie Robinson as the publication’s Rookie of the Year. Although the Brooklyn infielder faced challenges of being the century’s first black big-leaguer, ‘The Bible of Baseball’ makes the selection based on his hitting, running, defensive play, and value to the team, according to the article written by legendary publisher J.G. Taylor Spink.

1951      In the bottom of the ninth, Joe DiMaggio scores the winning run on a squeeze bunt by Phil Rizzuto off Cleveland starter Bob Lemon, giving the Yankees a 2-1 walk-off victory. The dramatic win breaks the tie for first place with the Tribe, and the Bronx Bombers will stay in front for the rest of the season.

1953      Ernie Banks becomes the first black player to appear in a Cubs game. The former Kansas City Monarch infielder, who makes an error and is hitless in three at-bats, will hit 512 home runs and win the MVP award twice during his 19-year Hall of Fame career.

1953      Reds GM Gabe Paul announces he has fired manager Rogers Hornsby without explaining the dismissal of the 57-year-old Hall of Famer. The Rajah, who has lost six managerial positions during his long baseball career, will be replaced on an interim basis by coach Buster Mills, who will take over the 64-82 club with eight games left to play in the season.

1954      The California community of Avila names Bobby Avila, finishing the campaign with a league-leading .341 for the eventual American League champs, as the town’s honorary mayor in recognition of the Indian second baseman’s outstanding contributions to the team’s success this season. The thirty-year-old infielder will become the mayor of his home city of Veracruz in 1980 before serving two three-year terms in the Mexican Congress.

1957      In his first at-bat in 17 days, Ted Williams homers off KC’s Tom Morgan, pinch-hitting in the eighth inning of the Red Sox’ 9-8 victory at Fenway Park. Boston’s ‘Splendid Splinter’ had been sidelined with pneumonia since September.

1963      Dodger ace Sandy Koufax tosses a four-hitter, blanking St. Louis at Sportsman’s Park, 4-0. The southpaw’s scoreless effort establishes a National League record for shutouts thrown by lefties in a season with 11, five shy of Grover Cleveland Alexander’s major league mark set in 1916 with the Phillies.

1964      Seattle mayor J.D. Dorm Braman publicly admits his attempt to bring the Indians to the Emerald City. Other suitors for the disgruntled franchise, whose board of directors will vote to keep the team in Cleveland next month, include Oakland and Dallas.

1964      Thanks to the efforts of Charlie Finley (seen below wearing a wig), the Beatles, who had planned for a day of rest in New Orleans on the only free date scheduled during their American tour, play a concert in Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium. The group’s manager Brian Epstein, who had initially turned down the A’s owner’s offers of $50,000 and $100,000 to have the lads from Liverpool perform in the City of Fountains, agrees on $150,000, about six times the going rate, enabling the Fab Four to earn $4,838 per minute, the largest sum ever paid for a musical concert.

1965      In front of a capacity crowd at the Bronx ballpark, the Yankees pay tribute to Mickey Mantle in the first of three special days held in his honor. Before appearing in his 2000th career game, ‘The Mick’ tells the fans that he hoped to play another 15 years, but in reality, he will play his last major league contest in 1968.

1966      At Yankee Stadium, New York celebrates Bobby Richardson Day in honor of their All-Star second baseman, retiring at the end of the season. After leaving the playing field in his prime to spend more time with his family, the 31-year-old infielder will return to the game in 1970 to become the head baseball coach at the University of South Carolina, where he will compile a 221-92-1 record with the Gamecocks.

1968      At Candlestick Park, Giants’ hurler Gaylord Perry (14-14) no-hits the Cardinals and Bob Gibson, 1-0, with the game’s only run scored on Ron Hunt’s first-inning home run. For the first time in major league history, the feat is accomplished in successive games when Redbird hurler Ray Washburn returns the favor tomorrow by no-hitting San Francisco, 2-0.

1968      With their 98th victory, Detroit clinches the American League pennant for the first time in 23 years, beating the Yankees, 2-1, when Don Wert’s ninth-inning single plates Al Kaline for the walk-off win at Tiger Stadium. Twenty-six-year-old right-hander Joe Sparma goes the distance, limiting the third-place Bronx Bombers to five hits.

1973      Rick Waits makes his major league debut when he pitches the ninth inning of the Rangers’ 10-3 victory over Chicago at Arlington Stadium. Although the 21-year-old right-hander starts the frame with an eight-run lead, he inexplicably gets credit for a save.

1975      Mets right-fielder Rusty Staub, in a 5-2 loss to Chicago at Shea Stadium, homers off Ray Burris in the fourth frame for his 98th RBI of the season, establishing a new team record. ‘Le Grand Orange’ surpasses the franchise mark set by Donn Clendenon in 1970.

1977      With his third-inning round-tripper off Jim Crawford at Tiger Stadium, Yankees DH Dave Kingman becomes the first player to homer for four teams in one season. The much-traveled veteran will hit a total of 26 home runs this year, playing for the Mets (9), Padres (11), Angels (2), and the Bronx Bombers (4).

1981      Dodgers southpaw Fernando Valenzuela ties White Sox freshman Ewell Russell’s 1913 rookie record when he hurls his eighth shutout of the season, blanking Atlanta on three hits. The 20-year-old Mexican’s 2-0 victory breaks the previous National League mark shared by Irving Young (Braves, 1905), Grover Cleveland Alexander (Phillies, 1911), and Jerry Koosman (Mets, 1968).

1982      In the bottom of the seventh at Shea Stadium, Dave Kingman knots the score at 2-2 against the Redbirds when he hits the final homer of his league-leading season total of 37. The 33-year-old Mets slugger will finish the season hitting just .204, the lowest batting average ever for a player who wins a home run crown.

1983      At Riverfront Stadium, 53,790 faithful fans celebrate Johnny Bench Night. The future Hall of Fame catcher doesn’t disappoint the regular-season record crowd, responding with a two-run homer and a single in the Reds’ 4-3 loss to the Astros.

1983      The White Sox beat Seattle, 4-3, clinching their first American League divisional title. The Comiskey Park victory secures the club’s first postseason berth since the Go-Go Sox won the American League pennant in 1959.

1984      On the seventeenth anniversary of his first major league round-tripper, Reggie Jackson connects off Kansas City pitcher Bud Black in the bottom of the seventh inning for his 500th career home run. The milestone four-bagger proves to be the only run the Angels would score in the Royals’ 10-1 victory.

1984      Mets rookie Dwight Gooden ties a major league record shared by Luis Tiant (1968 Indians) and Nolan Ryan (1974 Angels) with 32 strikeouts in two consecutive games. The 19-year-old Dr. K, who strikes out 16 Phillies in the team’s 2-1 loss at Veterans Stadium, also fanned sixteen Buc batters in his last start, a 2-0 complete-game victory at Shea Stadium.

(Ed. Note: The eventual go-ahead run scores on Doc’s eight-inning wild pitch and a balk, his second of the game.)

1988      Jeff Reardon, who hurls a perfect ninth inning, becomes the first pitcher to save 40 games in both leagues when the Twins defeat the White Sox, 3-1. The Dalton (MA) native also saved 42 games for the Expos in 1985.

1990      The Blue Jays set a major league single-season attendance record when 49,902 fans watch the home team beat the Yankees, 6-4. Toronto will finish the season with 58 consecutive sellouts at the SkyDome with a total attendance of 3,885,284.

1993      Ranger right-hander Nolan Ryan, in his next to last major league appearance, fans California catcher Greg Myers for his 5,714th and final career strikeout. The ‘Ryan Express’ will end his 27-year career ranking first all-time in strikeouts.

1995      Ken Caminiti ties Eddie Murray’s 1987 major league mark, becoming the first National Leaguer to hit a homer from both sides of the plate in consecutive games, going deep off RHP Turk Wendell and southpaw Roberto Rivera of the Cubs. The switch-hitting third baseman homered right-handed off Larry Casian and cleared the fence in deep right-center field yesterday, batting lefty on a pitch thrown by Steve Trachsel.

1996      Dodger right-hander Hideo Nomo no-hits the Rockies, 9-0, at Coors Field, becoming the only big-league hurler to accomplish the feat in the thin air of Denver. Tornado Boy’s performance in Colorado is the best-attended no-no and is the only hitless game with a paid attendance of more than 50,000 fans.

1998      At the age of 107, Chet Hoff dies in Daytona Beach, Florida, giving the southpaw the longest life span of any major leaguer. Before WW I ended his playing career, ‘Red’ played for the New York Highlanders (1911-13) and St. Louis Browns (1915), compiling a 2-4, 2.49 record.

1998      The Braves become the first team since the 1915 Red Sox to have five pitchers win 15 or more games in the same season. Joining Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, and Kevin Millwood, southpaw Denny Neagle becomes the latest Atlanta hurler to accomplish the feat when he scatters six hits over six innings in a 1-0 victory over Arizona.

2000      Due to conditions created by Hurricane Gordon, the Devil Rays postpone their scheduled game against the A’s at Tropicana Field, becoming only the third contest in a domed stadium affected by a weather event. The other postponements included a 1976 game between the Astros and the Pirates when ten inches of rain fell in Houston, making the Astrodome inaccessible, and a 1983 tilt between the Twins and Angels because the Metrodome’s roof collapsed under the weight of heavy snow.

2001      After a six-day hiatus, major league teams play games for the first time since the September 11th terrorist attacks. A new baseball tradition begins with the singing of God Bless America, and Cardinal announcer Jack Buck captures a nation’s mood by reading his original poem, We Shall Overcome, during the seventh-inning stretch at Busch Stadium.

2003      En route to capturing the American League Cy Young Award, Roy Halladay pitches his fourth consecutive complete game when the Blue Jays beat Detroit at Tiger Stadium, 6-0. ‘Doc’ will finish the season 22-7, with eight victories coming from his nine complete games.

2004      Barry Bonds, connecting off Jake Peavy’s third-inning slider at SBC Park, hits his 700th career home run. The historic homer touches off a fireworks display and the unfurling of a gigantic light tower banner featuring Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, the two other players to reach the milestone.

2005      The Padres, trailing 5-0 with two outs, shock the Nationals in the bottom of the ninth when they tie the score thanks to Khalil Greene’s first career grand slam. San Diego will complete the amazing comeback when Ramon Hernandez hits a three-run walk-off homer with two out in the 12th frame, beating Washington at Petco Park, 8-5.

2006      Mariners’ outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, in a 7-4 loss to the Royals in Kansas City, singles in his first two at-bats, extending his own major league record for consecutive 200-hit seasons to begin a career to six. The Japanese native also steals his 33rd straight base, an American League single-season record.

2006      The Red Sox sweep a doubleheader from the Yankees in New York for the first time in thirty years. Boston hadn’t beaten their arch-rivals twice in one day since July 31, 1976, and Independence Day of 1973 was the last time they accomplished the feat at Yankee Stadium.

2006      At Turner Field, Marlin infielder Dan Uggla hits his 26th home run of the season off Atlanta hurler Chad Paronto, breaking the record for the most home runs by a rookie second baseman. Hall of Fame infielder Joe Gordon had established the previous mark, playing with the Yankees in 1938.

2007      On the Today Show, Marc Ecko, who made millions from his clothing brand, announces the opportunity for the public to vote on the fate of Barry Bonds’ record-breaking home run ball. The 35-year-old fashion designer, who paid $752,467 for the ball at an online auction, has set up a website, www.vote756.com, which gives the fans the option of voting to:

Send the ball directly to Cooperstown.

Branding it with an asterisk before sending it to the Hall of Fame.

Putting the ball on a rocket ship and launching it into outer space.

2008      Jesse Carlson earns the victory when the Blue Jays rally from a 6-0 deficit to beat the Orioles, 8-7. The 27-year-old southpaw rookie reliever from Berlin (CT), who has held his opponents scoreless in his last 12 appearances, notches his seventh victory in relief, the most by any Toronto reliever since Paul Quantrill won 11 in 2001.

2010      Joe Torre, who will compile a 2326-1997 (.538.) managerial record during his 30 seasons as a skipper with Mets, Braves, Cardinals, Yankees, and the Dodgers, announces he will be retiring at the end of the month. Los Angeles immediately hires the team’s hitting coach Don Mattingly to replace the 70-year-old, who will accept a position in February to assist Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig as the new Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations.

2014      Brandon McCarthy throws nine pitches, has nine strikes, and records three outs, retiring Wil Myers, Nick Franklin, and Matt Joyce in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field. The 31-year-old right-hander pitches the fifth Immaculate Inning in franchise history, joining Al Downing (1967), Ron Guidry (1984), A.J. Burnett (2009), and Ivan Nova (2013) in accomplishing the feat.

2016      Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson hits two extra-inning home runs in the same game, giving the team a 3-2 victory over the Twins at Citi Field. The Grandy Man ties the game leading off in the 11th inning and then hits a two-out walk-off solo homer in the next frame, the club’s 201st home to set a franchise mark.

2018      Christian Yelich becomes the fifth player to complete two cycles in the same season and the first to accomplish the feat against the same team twice in one year. In less than three weeks, the Brewers outfielder repeats the rarity against Cincinnati when he singles in the first inning, doubles in the third, homers in the fifth, and strokes a two-run triple off reliever Jesus Reyes in the sixth inning of the team’s 8-0 victory at Miller Park.

2020      Chase Anderson allows five home runs in the fourth inning of the Blue Jay’s 10-7 loss at Yankee Stadium. In a span of 14 pitches, the right-handed reliever throws gopher balls to Brett Gardner, DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gleyber Torres, with the first three round-trippers hit back-to-back-back on the first pitch thrown in each respective at-bat.

2020      The Yankees, for the first time in franchise history, hit five home runs in one inning, equally an MLB mark accomplished on six previous occasions. The Bronx Bombers’ barrage against the Blue Jays occurs in the fourth inning when Brett Gardner, DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gleyber Torres go deep in the team’s 10-7 victory in New York.

*****************FOOTBALL HISTORY******************

September 17, 1950 – The San Francisco 49ers make their NFL debut (formerly in the All-American Football Conference) and fall to the New York Yanks 21-17 at the bay city’s Kezar Stadium. The Niners who were the 1949 runner ups in the AAFC to the Browns, lost their first five games in the NFL. They finally found their footing in the League in their 6th NFL game on October 22, 1950 when they defeated the Detroit Lions 28-27 at Kezar Field.

September 17, 1961 – The Minnesota Vikings play their very first regular season game in the NFL. Minnesota does it in style as they cruise to a 37-13 victory over the Chicago Bears. Rookie quarterback Fran Tarkenton makes his NFL debut count as he tosses an NFL debut game record 4 touchdown passes.

HALL OF FAME BIRTHDAYS FOR SEPTEMBER 17

September 17, 1897 – Ed Travis was a tackle from Tarkio College and the University of Missouri. Ed grew up in Tarkio , Missouri which is a small college town in the northern part of the state. Ed Travis was a star lineman at his local high school and had one ambition, he wanted to play football at the University of Missouri. Missouri’s coaches seemed unimpressed with the youngster out of high school , so Ed stayed home and attended Tarkio College. After an impressive season at Tarkio, the brass at Missouri recruited Travis and the next fall he was playing football for the Tigers. Football at Missouri was suspended for World War I and Ed served his country overseas. In 1919 he returned home and donned the Tiger uniform once again. He was selected to enter the College Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

September 17, 1909 – Bill Morton was a quarterback from Dartmouth College. Morton became a Dartmouth legend in the 1931 season in the Yale game. Up until that point in football history, the Big Green had never defeated the Bulldogs. With time dwindling in the fourth quarter, it looked like Yale had their number once again as the Bulldogs led by a touchdown with just over a minute to play. However no one told Bill Morton, as he kicked a 33 yard field goal to knot the score at 33 all and the Big Green finally tied their longtime nemesis.  “Air Mail” Morton had more heroics in store at the Cornell game as the on-field magic of Morton led to a 14-0 victory over the formerly undefeated Big Reds of Cornell. The College Football Hall of Fame welcomed Bill Morton through their doors into the hollows of collegiate legends in 1972.

September 17, 1910 – Cliff Montgomery was a former quarterback from Columbia University. Montgomery had his watershed collegiate moment on the big stage at a crucial moment. The setting was the 1934 Rose Bowl and heavily favored Stanford University was having their way with the Lions in the second quarter but somehow were denied the end zone as the score was still tied at 0-0. Montogomery in the huddle then called the play that went down in history known as “KF-79”, a newly devised option style play. The play failed twice earlier, but Cliff wanted to give it one more chance. So the Lions set up in an unbalanced line formation, Morton took the snap and then promptly handed it off to the speedster Al Barabas who swiftly weaved his way to an 18 yard touchdown! It proved to be the only score of the game and Columbia won the Rose Bowl 7-0 with Cliff Montgomery voted as the MVP of the game! Cliff would go on to receive All-American honors and led the Columbia Lions to a record of 22-3-2 during his 3 seasons played. After school Clif Montgomery played one season professionally with the Brooklyn Dodgers football team and later became one the nation’s top football officials. During his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II he became a decorated Naval Commander. The National Football Foundation voted Montgomery into their College Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

September 17, 1913 – James “Monk” Moscrip was an end from Stanford University who played for the Cardinal from 1933 through the 1935 seasons.  He was a member of the famous “Vow Boys” who prior to the 1933 season promised not to lose to the University of Southern California for the next three seasons. Moscrip and the rest of the group delivered on their promise as Stanford defeated USC in those three straight seasons allowing the Trojans to score a total of only 7 points in the three games! Monk was the fastest man on his team as he played both offensive and defensive end as well as performing the kicking duties for Stanford. During World War II Moscrip was a U.S. Navy lieutenant and fought bravely in the battles at Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and Okinawa. After the War Monk played a couple of seasons in the NFL as part of the Detroit Lions franchise. He was welcomed into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

September 17, 1927 – George Blanda was a quarterback and placekicker in both the AFL and the NFL. His career lasted for 26 years, longer than any other player in history and in his last season, at the ripe old age of 48 he is the oldest person ever to play quarterback professionally. George played collegiately at the University of Kentucky. Out of college Blanda was on the AAFC’s Baltimore Colts roster in 1947 through the 1949 seasons. In 1949 George Halas signed the youngster for $600 to play with the NFL’s Chicago Bears. Blanda was the kicker and played a little bit of linebacker for his first few seasons with the Bears. George was named the Chicago starting quarterback in 1953, but an injury a year later would relegate him back to being the kicker. Blanda and Halas often had a rocky relationship together during Blanda’s time with the Bears. This led to Blanda retiring after the 1958 season. When the AFL formed in 1960 though, George Blanda found the opportunity to play quarterback again as he joined the new Houston Oilers team. Though the so called experts often referred to him as an NFL cast-off, Blanda proved he could still play as he and the Oilers won the first two AFL Championships! In the 1961 season he set a record at the time for AFL/NFL quarterbacks as he threw 36 TDs. His most memorable season though might be in 1970 when he was a member of the Oakland Raiders. That season with the Silver and Black, Blanda in a five game span helped the Raiders pull off 4 last second victories and one tie with either a passing TD or a field goal kick and he was 43 years old at the time! Another amazing fact about Blanda that will probably never be matched is that he spent 7 or more seasons with 3 different franchises!  George Blanda was selected to be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

September 17, 1960 – Anthony Carter was a wide receiver from the University of Michigan. Anthony was a unanimous All-American in both the 1981 and the 1982 seasons and an All-American a third time in 1980. That 1980 season, he was voted by his Michigan teammates as the MVP of the team, the very first time in Wolverine history that a sophomore won the honor. After the 1982 season Carter was nominated as the BIG 10 Conference Most Valuable Player! Besides playing offense Carter returned punts and kicks for the Wolverines. In his career at Michigan he scored 36 touchdowns and put up 240 total points breaking the record set by the great Tom Harmon some 4 decades earlier. Carter enjoyed a 13 year career in professional football. He played in the USFL for the Michigan Panthers and then later in the NFL for the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings. The National Football Foundation selected him to enter the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
