NBA ROUNDUP: JIMMY BUTLER III INJURED AS WARRIORS FALL TO ROCKETS

Jalen Green shot 8-for-18 from 3-point range en route to 38 points as the Houston Rockets evened their Western Conference first-round playoff series with a 109-94 win over the visiting Golden State Warriors in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Making the night more painful for the seventh-seeded Warriors was losing Jimmy Butler III to a pelvic contusion late in the first quarter. He missed the remainder of the game and was headed for an MRI exam.

Second-seeded Houston never trailed, building a lead of as many as 20 points in the second half. Green came up big while snuffing out the Warriors’ comeback attempt in the third quarter, knocking down three of his 3-pointers in the period and scoring 15 points in the period. He was responsible for more than half of the Rockets’ trey total on the night, as Houston shot 15-for-40 from deep (37.5 percent).

The Rockets went 39-for-86 (45.3 percent) from the floor overall, but their shooting both inside the 3-point arc and beyond it improved dramatically from Sunday, when they fell 95-85 in Game 1.

Without the versatile Butler, Golden State relied heavily on its 3-point shooting and went 17-for-43 (39.5 percent) from long range. Coupled with a poor 11-of-18 effort at the free-throw line, Golden State could not muster enough offense.

Celtics 109, Magic 100

Jaylen Brown scored a game-high 36 points and Boston overcame the absence of leading scorer Jayson Tatum to beat visiting Orlando in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Brown was 12 of 19 from the field — including 5-of-7 from 3-point territory — grabbed 10 rebounds and had five assists. Kristaps Porzingis added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the second-seeded Celtics, who have a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Derrick White (17), Payton Pritchard (14) and Jrue Holiday (11) also scored in double figures.

The seventh-seeded Magic received 32 points, nine rebounds and seven assists from Paulo Banchero. Franz Wagner finished with 25 points and Wendell Carter Jr. had 16.

Cavaliers 121, Heat 112

Donovan Mitchell scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and Darius Garland contributed 21 points and nine assists as Cleveland held off visiting Miami to take a 2-0 lead in an Eastern Conference first-round series.

The Cavaliers made 11 3-pointers in the second quarter, a team playoff record for any period. Evan Mobley had 20 points and six rebounds, and Mitchell finished 7 of 10 from beyond the arc.

Tyler Herro collected 33 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Heat. Bam Adebayo had 11 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, and Haywood Highsmith scored 17 points and made 5 of 6 3-point attempts.

NHL ROUNDUP: STARS EDGE AVALANCHE IN OT

Tyler Seguin scored 5:31 into overtime, and the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 in Denver on Wednesday night to steal home ice back in their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Jamie Benn also scored and Jake Oettinger turned away 27 shots for Dallas, which leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Valeri Nichushkin scored and Mackenzie Blackwood made 26 saves for the Avalanche, who couldn’t capitalize on a four-minute power play at the end of regulation and the start of overtime.

The loss spoiled the return of Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog. The left winger had not played since lifting the Stanley Cup on June 26, 2022. A right knee injury required four surgeries, including cartilage replacement.

Capitals 3, Canadiens 1

Connor McMichael scored twice and Logan Thompson made 14 of his 25 saves in the third period as Washington beat visiting Montreal to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round Eastern Conference matchup.

Dylan Strome scored the go-ahead goal for the Capitals early in the second period, exactly one minute after McMichael tied the game.

Christian Dvorak got his first goal of the playoffs for the Canadiens, opening the scoring at 1:16 of the middle period. Sam Montembeault kept Montreal in the contest by stopping 29 shots.

Kings 6, Oilers 2

Adrian Kempe scored twice in a four-point game and Anze Kopitar collected one goal and three assists to lead host Los Angeles past Edmonton for a 2-0 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Andrei Kuzmenko posted one goal and one assist while Brandt Clarke and Quinton Byfield each scored for the Kings. Warren Foegele collected two assists and Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves.

Leon Draisaitl and Viktor Arvidsson replied for the Oilers. Starting goalie Stuart Skinner stopped 23 of 28 shots before being pulled midway through the third period. Calvin Pickard made two saves in relief.

MLB ROUNDUP: METS OVERTAKE PHILS, CAP 7-0 HOMESTAND

Starling Marte’s walk-off RBI single with two outs in the 10th wrapped up the Mets’ 4-3 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday and completed a perfect homestand for New York.

The Mets’ 7-0 showing ranked as the second-longest undefeated homestand in franchise history — trailing only the 10-0 stretch in April 2015. That team went on to earn the franchise’s most recent World Series appearance. The Mets also improved their major-league-leading record to 18-7, which trails only the 1986 World Series champions’ 20-5 start in franchise annals.

After Nick Castellanos’ RBI single gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the 10th, Max Kranick (2-0) entered with the bases loaded and induced two flyouts. Pete Alonso tied the game with an RBI double against Jordan Romano (0-1) before Marte looped a single over second to drive in Alonso with the game-winner.

Mets starter David Peterson allowed two runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. Phillies ace Zack Wheeler gave up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine over six innings. Alec Bohm went 3-for-5 and Edmundo Sosa added two hits.

Rays 7, Diamondbacks 6 (11 innings)

Kameron Misner and Yandy Diaz each had three hits, including run-scoring doubles in the 11th inning, as Tampa Bay nipped Arizona in Phoenix.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th, Eric Orze got Geraldo Perdomo to ground into a double play to end the game and pick up his first career save. Pete Fairbanks (2-1) recorded two outs in the 10th.

Corbin Carroll hit two homers and drove in three runs for the Diamondbacks. Drey Jameson (0-1) gave up two runs, one earned, in the 11th.

Yankees 5, Guardians 1

Carlos Rodon allowed one unearned run over seven innings and Aaron Judge delivered two more hits to boost his batting average to .415 as visiting New York prevented a three-game sweep by Cleveland.

Rodon (3-3) scattered four hits over a season-high seven innings. He struck out eight, walked two and retired 14 of the final 15 Guardians he faced. Judge started his day with an RBI triple and finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Paul Goldschmidt added three hits and two RBIs.

Guardians starter Luis L. Ortiz (2-3) surrendered five hits, five walks and four runs. He needed 104 pitches to get through 4 1/3 innings as he also fanned eight.

Tigers 6, Padres 0

Reese Olson pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball and Justyn-Henry Malloy supplied a solo homer and RBI double as host Detroit blanked San Diego to take two out of three in the series.

The Padres managed just two Jose Iglesias singles off Olson (3-1), who recorded seven strikeouts with just one walk. Gleyber Torres set the tone for the Tigers with a first-inning homer while Dillon Dingler added a two-run homer and Riley Greene contributed two hits and an RBI.

San Diego starter Kyle Hart (2-2) gave up two runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Padres managed just four baserunners as they were shut out in a regular-season game for the first time since July 19 by the Cleveland Guardians — a stretch of 87 games.

Braves 4, Cardinals 1

Eli White launched a three-run homer with one out in the eighth to lift Atlanta to the win over visiting St. Louis in the rubber match of a three-game series.

White’s blast made a winner of Daysbel Hernandez (3-0), who came in and struck out Jordan Walker to escape a jam in the eighth and then handled the ninth. Starter Bryce Elder went six innings and allowed just one run and five hits. Michael Harris II went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

St. Louis starter Miles Mikolas scattered six hits while throwing six scoreless innings. JoJo Romero (1-3) allowed two singles in the eighth before giving way to Rudy Fernandez, who allowed White’s homer. Alec Burleson went 3-for-4 and Nolan Arenado cracked an RBI double.

Reds 5, Marlins 2

Brady Singer outdueled former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara and Austin Wynns delivered another home run and double to lead Cincinnati past host Miami.

Singer (4-0) surrendered just four hits and two runs over six innings while fanning eight. Wynns, who went 6-for-7 with a homer and six RBIs in his previous start Sunday afternoon, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Alcantara (2-2) allowed five hits and three runs in six innings. Matt Mervis supplied all of the Marlins’ offense with a two-run homer in the first inning.

Nationals 4, Orioles 3

James Wood and Josh Bell belted early home runs and Luis Garcia Jr.’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly broke a tie as host Washington topped Baltimore.

Nationals starter Trevor Williams turned in five solid innings, allowing one run with five strikeouts. Reliever Jorge Lopez (1-0) logged 1 2/3 innings and picked up the win despite allowing the tying run. Kyle Finnegan notched his ninth save.

Adley Rutschman, Cedric Mullins and Jackson Holliday each had two hits for the Orioles, who showed more offensive spark than a night earlier, when they had one hit in a 7-0 loss. They finished with 10 hits Wednesday but stranded 12 runners.

Cubs 7, Dodgers 6

Pete Crow-Armstrong homered among his three hits and drove in a career-high four runs, lifting host Chicago to a win over Los Angeles.

Crow-Armstrong belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning, added an RBI single in the fifth and had two of his team’s five steals. Matthew Boyd (2-2) benefited from the offensive outburst despite allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits over six innings. Porter Hodge retired the side in order in the ninth to secure his first save.

Teoscar Hernandez ripped a two-run single and a two-run homer for the Dodgers. Andy Pages also went deep for the second straight game, and Mookie Betts added an RBI double.

Astros 3, Blue Jays 1

Rookie Ryan Gusto had six strikeouts over 5 2/3 effective innings and Zach Dezenzo went 3-for-4 with an RBI as Houston beat visiting Toronto to complete a three-game sweep.

Gusto (3-1) allowed one run on three hits. Christian Walker had a solo home run and Yordan Alvarez also drove in a run for the Astros. Josh Hader remained perfect in save opportunities, picking up his seventh of the season, working around two baserunners.

Toronto’s Bowden Francis (2-3) allowed three earned runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings and George Springer, a former Astro, doubled home the Blue Jays’ only run in the fourth inning. Toronto has lost five straight games.

Twins 6, White Sox 3

Byron Buxton hit a two-run homer, Trevor Larnach added a solo shot and host Minnesota held on to beat Chicago.

Ty France and Brooks Lee drove in one run apiece for the Twins, who will go for a series sweep on Thursday. Luke Keaschall went 1-for-3 with a walk and two steals. Justin Topa (1-1) threw a scoreless inning of relief and Danny Coulombe pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

Andrew Benintendi and Edgar Quero each had an RBI for the White Sox, who lost their third straight game and ninth in their past 10. White Sox right-hander Jordan Leasure (0-1) allowed one run — Larnach’s homer — in one inning of relief.

Pirates 3, Angels 0

Andrew Heaney threw six scoreless innings and Oneil Cruz hit one of the longest home runs in the majors this season, leading Pittsburgh to a shutout victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.

Heaney, who pitched for the Angels from 2015-21, allowed only one hit — Travis d’Arnaud’s double with one out in the fifth inning. Heaney struck out nine, including the first six batters of the game, and didn’t issue a walk. Cruz blasted a 463-foot homer off Jack Kochanowicz in the fifth inning, the fourth-longest homer in the majors this year.

Kochanowicz (1-3) did not pitch poorly, allowing two runs and eight hits in six innings. However, his teammates finished with just two hits.

Mariners 8, Red Sox 5

Ben Williamson, Leo Rivas and J.P. Crawford combined for seven of Seattle’s 13 hits while forming the bottom third of the lineup, leading the Mariners to a win in Boston.

Crawford delivered the biggest blow with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Seattle extended its lead with two more runs in both the sixth and seventh, then withstood a late comeback attempt from the Red Sox. Williamson was 3-for-5 with an RBI and run, while Rivas scored twice on a 2-for-3 night.

Triston Casas belted a three-run homer in the eighth to make things interesting for Boston. Jarren Duran and Alex Bregman each had multiple hits for the Red Sox, who had won six of seven.

Athletics 5, Rangers 2

Shea Langeliers went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Lawrence Butler homered to lead the Athletics to a victory over Texas in West Sacramento, Calif.

Gio Urshela added two doubles and an RBI for the A’s, who snapped a two-game losing streak. First baseman Nick Kurtz hit an RBI single in his first major league at-bat and finished 1-for-4. Athletics starter JP Sears (3-2) allowed two runs on five hits in five-plus innings. Mason Miller, who hit 102 mph on the radar gun with a fastball to Marcus Semien, struck out three in the ninth for his seventh save in seven tries.

Wyatt Langford homered for Texas. Kumar Rocker (1-3) gave up five runs on seven hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Giants 4, Brewers 2

Logan Webb took a shutout into the seventh inning, Wilmer Flores ended a scoreless deadlock with a two-run single in the sixth and San Francisco held on to beat visiting Milwaukee.

Jung Hoo Lee collected three hits and Camilo Doval pitched out of a ninth-inning jam for the Giants, who won for the second time in three nights to start a four-game series.

Webb (3-1) was in a pitchers’ duel with Freddy Peralta (2-2) until his teammates finally broke through. Webb allowed six hits in his 6 1/3 innings. Peralta was charged with the first three of the runs on five hits.

Rockies-Royals, ppd.

The game between Colorado and host Kansas City was postponed due to rain. The contest will be made up Thursday as part of a doubleheader.

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANS SPLIT FIRST DOUBLEHEADER OF SERIES AT ST. PAUL

ST PAUL, Minn. – DJ Stewart and Abrahan Gutierrez each homered to power the Indianapolis Indians to a 4-2 win in Game 2 of a seven-inning doubleheader on Wednesday night at CHS Field. The Indians dropped the opening contest, 5-1.

With Ji Hwan Bae reaching on a walk, Stewart launched his third home run of the season in the first inning to put the Indians (11-10) up by two early. Gutierrez followed with a solo shot of his own in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Saints (9-11) manufactured one run in each of the second and third innings courtesy of Anthony Prato and Carson McCusker RBI singles, respectively, to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Indianapolis extended its lead and capped the scoring in the sixth inning. Billy Cook drew a leadoff walk and subsequently stole second base. Gutierrez drove in his second run of the game with a single through the right side for late-inning insurance.

Opener Ryder Ryan tossed 2.1 innings of two-run ball with Drake Fellows (W, 2-0) earning his second win in as many appearances with 3.0 scoreless frames and five strikeouts. Isaac Matson (S, 1) then retired all five batters he faced with three strikeouts.

Cory Lewis (L, 0-1) allowed the pair of early home runs en route to his first loss of the season, with the right-hander allowing six homers in his last 4.1 innings.

In Game 1, St. Paul countered one Indianapolis run in the first inning with three of its own in the bottom half and never looked back. Four of the Saints five runs came courtesy of a pair of two-run homers by Mickey Gasper and Mike Ford against Thomas Harrington (L, 0-1).

Former Indian Brady Feigl (W, 1-0) blanked Indianapolis across the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win in his St. Paul debut.

Nick Solak extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a pair of hits in the doubleheader opener before going hitless in Game 2 to conclude the team’s highest streak of the season. The streak is also tied with former Indian Gilberto Celestino (Syracuse) for the longest among International League hitters this season.

The eight-game series continues tomorrow at 7:37 PM at CHS Field. Right-hander Marco Raya (0-0, 1.23) will get the start for St. Paul while Indy has yet to name a starter.

INDIANA BASEBALL

BIG FIFTH INNING LEADS TO MIDWEEK SUCCESS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A run of 13 unanswered runs at the plate and strong pitching on the mound helped the Indiana Baseball team (23-18, 12-9 B1G) to a dominant 14-4 (F/7) win over Ball State at Victory Field on Wednesday (April 23) evening in Indianapolis.

The Hoosiers piled on a combined 12 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to blow the game open for good. IU brought 13 batters to the plate in the fifth inning to hang nine runs on the board and bring the run-rule into effect. Four different players had multi-hit games including freshmen infielders Will Moore and Cooper Malamazian.

Freshman first baseman Jake Hanley hit the game’s lone home run – a solo shot in the third inning – to tie the score. He became the fifth true freshman for IU in the past four seasons to hit at least 10 home runs in one year. It was only his second long ball away from Bart Kaufman Field this season.

The win was IU’s 10th of the season in run-rule fashion and helps keep the offense flowing ahead of a big weekend against conference leaders Iowa. Over the past two games, IU has put up 29 runs in 15 innings with Moore batting in the leadoff spot.

Pitching coach Dustin Glant used eight arms to cover 21 outs. They only allowed four runs and three hits while keeping a potent offense in check. Freshman lefty Brayton Thomas and sophomore right-hander Seth Benes put together another solid outing in relief.

Head coach Jeff Mercer and the Hoosiers will head west to Iowa tomorrow for a three-game series in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes. First pitch on Friday (April 25) evening is set for 7:02 p.m. ET/6:02 p.m. CT from Duane Banks Field.

• This was IU’s 10th run-rule victory of the season.

Notes to Know

• Freshman first baseman Jake Hanley hit his 10th home run of the season with a solo blast to tie the game in the third inning. It is the fourth-straight season that the Hoosiers have had a freshman with a 10-homer season. Carter Mathison (2022), Devin Taylor/Tyler Cerny (2023) and Jasen Oliver (2024) all did so across the past four campaigns.

• Senior pitcher Ryan Kraft pitched one inning and earned the win in IU’s commanding 14-4 victory. The win was the 10th of his illustrious career across 77 career appearances. He also became the 22nd player in program history to record 175 career strikeouts on the mound.

• IU’s offense worked 10 walks in the victory over Ball State. It’s the seventh time this season – and the first since March 4th (Northern Kentucky) – that IU has managed at least 10 walks at the plate. Eight different players had at least one while freshmen Caleb Koskie and Hogan Denny each had two.

• Before the bottom of the seventh inning, IU had worked 13 unanswered runs to take the lead for good. The nine runs scored in the fifth inning were the most in a single frame this year. The Hoosiers brought 13 batters to the plate and forced the Cardinals to use five pitchers in the inning.

Up Next

The Hoosiers make the trek west to face Big Ten leaders, Iowa, in a three-game set this weekend. The series with Iowa will be streamed on B1G+ can also be heard on the Indiana Sports Radio Network via IUHoosiers.com/Audio.

PURDUE SHUTS OUT MIAMI OHIO BEHIND GOSSETT ONE-HIT PERFORMANCE

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue (26-17, 8-8 Big Ten) triumphed over Miami (Ohio) (26-23, 15-7 MAC) 2-0 behind a one-hit gem from Julia Gossett.

Gossett registered 10 strikeouts in the circle and allowed only one hit. Khloe Banks and Moriah Polar were the only runs of the game and both went 3-for-3 at the plate.

BOILER BITS v. Miami (Ohio)

Offensive Highlights:

Khloe Banks: 3-for-3, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 SB

Moriah Polar: 3-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 H, 2 SB

Pitching Breakdown:

Julia Gossett (W, 9-7): 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 10 K, 26 BF

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Gossett started the game with a strikeout, and the infield followed it up with two caught fly balls. Polar and Banks made it on base in the bottom of the first inning, but the Boilermakers went scoreless. The Redhawks put a hit on the board in the second inning, but the Boilers stopped the damage before the runner could score.

Purdue sent Miami down in order in the top of the third frame, then carried that momentum to the plate. Banks made it on base and a line drive up the middle by Polar sent her home. Maura Condon hit the ball to the left side and Polar scored on a Redhawk errant throw, extending the lead.

The Boilers had another set of back-to-back outs in the top of the fourth inning to hold the Redhawks at no runs. Jordyn Ramos had a hit out to right centerfield, but was left on base. Banks and Polar both made it on base again in the fifth inning but weren’t able to add any more runs to the score.

The sixth inning brought no runs or hits from either side, and Purdue secured their 2-0 win with three quick outs in the seventh.

UP NEXT:

Purdue kicks off their series against Ohio State on Friday, April 25 at 6 p.m. ET in Columbus, Ohio. The game will be live on B1G+.

PURDUE WOMEN’S GOLF

PURDUE WOMEN’S GOLF EARNS 10TH STRAIGHT NCAA REGIONAL BERTH

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Women’s Golf learned its postseason destination Wednesday (April 23), watching the selection show for the 2025 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships on Golf Channel. Earning their 10th straight regional berth in the third season under head coach Zack Byrd, the Boilermakers are headed to the Lubbock Regional (May 5-7) at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.

Purdue is the No. 7 seed for the regional, which consists of 54 holes of stroke play. The top five teams and the top individual (not on an advancing team) will advance from the regional site to the championships, which will be held at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California (May 16-21).

The Boilermakers earned an NCAA Regional berth for the 27th time out of the 28 renditions of the NCAA Championships. Purdue advanced to the championships stage 19 of those times, including a season ago. Last year, the Boilermakers entered the NCAA Las Vegas Regional as the sixth seed before finishing second to secure a trip to the national championships. Purdue’s runner-up performance was its best in an NCAA Regional since also finishing second in 2013.

In 2010, Purdue captured the national championship with the second-lowest four-round team score in NCAA Championships history.

The Boilermakers earned a trip to the postseason after a strong 2024-25 campaign that featured two tournament titles and two runner-up finishes. Capturing the Boilermaker Classic and the Coach Mo Classic, Purdue won multiple tournaments in consecutive seasons for the first time since a six-year stretch from the fall of 2005 to the spring of 2011. The Boilermakers also placed second at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational in the fall before earning runner-up honors at the Briar’s Creek Invitational in the spring.

IRISH FEND OFF MASTODONS FOR MIDWEEK WIN

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame baseball team took the lead in the fifth and never let go of it in an 8-6 win over visiting Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday night.

The Irish struck first as Carson Tinney used a ground-rule double in the bottom of the first to drive in Jared Zimbardo. The Mastodons equalized with a lead-off home run in the top of the third and gained a 3-1 lead later in the inning off of three more hits.

Notre Dame broke through with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jared Zimbardo led off with a double down the left field line, and Carson Tinney’s bat remained hot with a single to the outfield to drive in Zimbardo. Parker Brzustewicz drove in Tinney with a ground out to tie the game at 3-3. Connor Hincks drove a ground-rule double over the right-center wall as Watters came in to score on the play, and Estevan Moreno added the third double of the inning to drive in Hincks for a 5-3 lead.

Jayce Lee made a long run before collecting a key sliding out in left field, but Purdue Fort Wayne got a run back in the top of the sixth before Justin Mayes Jr. induced a fly out to end the inning.

The Irish came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Jayce Lee hit a lead-off single, and Jared Zimbardo drew a walk to put a pair on base. Carson Tinney had his third hit of the game with a single to the outfield to load the bases. Bino Watters drew a four-pitch walk to plate Lee, and Davis Johnson used a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Zimbardo for a 7-4 lead.

The Mastodons pushed two runs across in the top of the seventh before back-t0-back Chase Van Ameyde strikeouts ended the inning. Ricky Reeth entered the game in the top of the eighth and used a strong pick-off move to cut down the lone runner he allowed on base. Bino Watters then delivered a big solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Irish the momentum for good. Reeth made quick work of the Mastodons in the top of the ninth as he struck out the side to earn the save.

Carson Tinney went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI, and a run. Bino Watters was 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored. Jared Zimbardo was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and three runs. Connor Hincks and Estevan Moreno each had a double and an RBI while Hincks added a run and a walk. Parker Brzustewicz collected a hit and an RBI, and Jayce Lee had a hit and scored a run.

Dylan Heine had a no-decision in the start with 2.1 innings pitched and a strikeout. Brady Koester, Xavier Hirsch, Justin Mayes Jr., Chase Van Ameyde, and Ricky Reeth all saw time on the hill. Hirsch earned the win after going 2.2 innings with a career-best three strikeouts. Chase Van Ameyde recorded three strikeouts, and Ricky Reeth earned the save over the final 2.0 innings and struck out three while not surrendering a hit.

BALL STATE BASEBALL

BASEBALL SUFFERS MIDWEEK SETBACK TO INDIANA IN INDIANAPOLIS

INDIANAPOLIS – The Ball State baseball team got out to a 2-1 lead but fell 14-4 to Indiana on Wednesday night at Victory Field.

The Cardinals (29-13) scored twice in the second inning on a two-run single by Max Kalk that brought in Garrett Arnold and Ty Davis to take the early edge over the Hoosiers (23-18), who pulled away with a three-run fourth and a nine-run fifth frame.

Blake Bevis plated Brayden Huebner with a single up the middle in the seventh before Alex Richter drove in DJ Scheumann on a hit by pitch, which was his 23rd of the year. Richter is now one away from tying the single season HBP record in Ball State baseball history.

Brendan Garza struck out three in 2.1 innings of two-run ball in his initial collegiate start, while Zach Kwasny and Lucas Letsinger came on in the later innings to each strike out a pair of Hoosiers in scoreless appearances.

Drue Young (0-4) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in an inning. Indiana’s Ryan Kraft (1-1) was credited with the win after tossing a scoreless inning in the third.

Ball State is next scheduled to return to Mid-American Conference play and begin a series at Central Michigan at 3 p.m. on Friday.
