WARRIORS HOLD OFF GRIZZLIES, NAB WEST’S NO. 7 SEED
Jimmy Butler III scored 38 points and Stephen Curry added 37 and the Golden State Warriors earned the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference playoffs with a 121-116 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in the play-in round on Tuesday night at San Francisco.
Curry drained six 3-pointers and hit all 13 of his free-throw attempts to help the Warriors hold off Memphis.
Golden State will face the second-seeded Rockets in the first round of the playoffs, beginning Sunday in Houston. It was the first time the Warriors won a play-in game in four attempts.
The Grizzlies will host either the Sacramento Kings or the Dallas Mavericks on Friday for the No. 8 playoff seed. The Kings and Mavericks play their play-in game on Wednesday night.
Desmond Bane made five treys and scored 30 points for Memphis, and Ja Morant added 22 points despite missing some time in the second half due to an ankle injury. Jaren Jackson Jr. had 18 points, Zach Edey amassed 14 points and 17 rebounds and Santi Alamda also scored 14 for the Grizzlies, who trailed by 20 in the second quarter.
Edey made two free throws with 14.3 seconds left to pull the Grizzlies within 117-116. Curry hit two free throws with 5.4 seconds left to push the lead back to three.
After a timeout, Aldama didn’t inbound the ball before being called for a violation to destroy the Grizzlies’ attempt to tie. Curry was fouled again with 3.4 seconds left and made both free throws to seal the game.
Gary Payton II had 12 points and Quinten Post added 11 for Golden State, which shot 45.9 percent from the field, including 15 of 43 (34.9 percent) from 3-point range.
The Grizzlies made 48.8 percent of their attempts from the floor and hit 12 of 26 (46.2 percent) from behind the arc.
Memphis trailed by 12 at halftime before making a spirited run in the third quarter.
Morant converted a three-point play as Memphis crept within 82-81 with 4:25 remaining in the period, but Morant hurt his right ankle on the play when he landed on Buddy Hield’s left foot. After Morant sank the free throw, the Grizzlies fouled on purpose to get Morant out of the game.
Memphis scored the first five points of the final quarter on a 3-pointer by Bane and a hoop by John Konchar to go up 96-94, its first lead since the opening quarter.
Morant returned with the game tied at 96 and 9:26 remaining.
Butler had 21 first-half points and Golden State led 67-55 at the break. Morant had 15 in the half for the Grizzlies.
Curry drained a 3-pointer and converted a four-point play during a 9-0 push as Golden State went up 55-35 with 6:53 left in the half for its largest advantage of the game.
MAGIC PULL AWAY FROM HAWKS, EARN PLAYOFF DATE WITH CELTICS
Cole Anthony scored 13 of his 26 points in a fourth-quarter surge Tuesday night, allowing the Orlando Magic to claim a playoff berth via a 120-95 romp over the visiting Atlanta Hawks in an Eastern Conference play-in game.
Wendell Carter Jr. chipped in with 19 points, Paolo Banchero put up 17 and Anthony Black added to a dominant bench effort with 16 for the Magic, who move on as the seventh seed to a first-round playoff series against the second-seeded Celtics. The best-of-seven set tips off Sunday in Boston.
Trae Young went for a game-high 28 points before getting ejected for the eighth-place Hawks, who now return home to face either the Chicago Bulls or Miami Heat for the final Eastern playoff spot on Friday night. The winner of that game will draw the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs.
After watching the Magic score 18 of the first quarter’s final 20 points to go up 32-17, the Hawks, who finished one game behind Orlando in the regular season, clawed back into the game. Atlanta got within three late in the third period and then 79-73 after a George Niang buzzer-beating 3-pointer at quarter’s end.
Carter’s jumper 16 seconds into the final period got the Magic going, after which Anthony and Black took charge. They combined for five 3-pointers — three by Anthony — in a pull-away that was so frustrating to the Hawks, Young couldn’t finish the game after venting on the referees. He drew two technical fouls with 4:47 go go.
Anthony shot 4-for-9 from 3-point range, helping the Magic to a 33-12 advantage from beyond the arc.
Franz Wagner added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Orlando, while Banchero complemented his 17 points with nine rebounds and a game-high-tying seven assists.
The Magic bench outscored its Atlanta counterparts 57-30.
Niang finished with 15 points, Mouhamed Gueye 12 and Onyeka Okongwu 11 for Atlanta. Dyson Daniels had team highs in rebounds with 12 and assists with seven to go with seven points.

NHL ROUNDUP: BLUES, WILD CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTHS
Pavel Buchnevich celebrated his 30th birthday two days early as his three-point performance helped the St. Louis Blues secure a playoff spot on Tuesday with a 6-1 win over the visiting Utah Hockey Club.
Buchnevich made sure the Blues (44-30-8, 96 points) would not miss out on the playoffs for a third straight season as he had a hand in the team’s first three goals — all in a four-goal first period. He finished with a goal and two assists for his fourth three-point game of the season and second in three games. Jordan Kyrou added a pair of third-period goals. Jimmy Snuggerud got his first career goal to go with an assist, and Zack Bolduc and Brayden Schenn each recorded a goal and an assist as well.
Robert Thomas and Cam Fowler both notched a pair of assists. Jordan Binnington stretched his home winning streak to 11 by stopping 22 Utah shots.
Utah (38-31-13, 89 points) mustered only one goal — a power-play tally from Clayton Keller — in its season finale. Mikhail Sergachev and Nick Schmaltz set up Keller’s 30th goal. Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves.
Wild 3, Ducks 2 (OT)

Defenseman Dante Fabbro and Kent Johnson each scored in the second period and Adam Fantilli tallied in the third for his 30th goal of the season and fifth in his last three games.

FIVE-RUN NINTH INNING HANDS INDIANS LOSS IN SERIES OPENER VS. MUD HENS
INDIANAPOLIS – The Toledo Mud Hens put up five runs in the ninth inning to break a 6-6 tie and defeat the Indianapolis Indians, 11-6, in Tuesday’s series opener at Victory Field.
The first five Mud Hens (5-11) batters of the top of the ninth inning reached base safely against Hunter Stratton (L, 0-1), with former Indians outfielder Bligh Madris roping a two-run double to plate the game-winning runs. The following batter, Brian Serven, extended the lead to 9-3 with an RBI single up the middle and Jack Dunn immediately plated another with a sacrifice fly. The final run scored via a two-out wild pitch by Yohan Ramírez.
With the Indians (5-8) trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, rehabbing infielder Jared Triolo hit a home run on the second pitch he saw to cut the deficit in half. The teams continued to go back and forth, with Indianapolis countering one Toledo run in the third with two of their own on a sacrifice fly by Matt Gorski and a game-tying single by Liover Peguero.
The game remained tied, 3-3, until the sixth inning when Hao-Yu Lee connected on a three-run go-ahead homer to center field off Randy Labaut. The Indians battled back once again in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game courtesy of an Eli Wilson two-run double down the third base line and Triolo RBI single.
Tyler Owens, Andrew Chafin (W, 2-0) and Matt Gage combined for three shutout innings out of the Toledo bullpen to silence Indy.
Triolo, in the first game of his rehab assignment, finished 2-for-3 with two runs, a home run, two RBI and a walk before being lifted for defensive replacement Malcom Nuñez in the eighth inning. Billy Cook led the Indians offense with three hits – his first multi-hit game of the season – including a double and triple.
The six-game set continues tomorrow at 11:05 AM. Right-hander Carson Fulmer (1-0, 2.70) is set to take the mound for the Indians. No starting pitcher has been named for the Mud Hens.

INDIANA BASEBALL
TOUGH TUESDAY SETBACK
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite conceding just one extra-base hit, the Indiana Baseball team (20-17, 10-8 B1G) couldn’t overcome a tough Indiana State ball club on Tuesday (April 15) evening at Bart Kaufman Field. The visiting Sycamores pieced together seven runs on 11 hits – 10 of them singles – in a thorough 7-5 victory in Bloomington.
IU held the visitors off the board through four innings but Indiana State struck for four runs in the fifth inning behind walks, small ball and well-placed base hits. Sophomore southpaw Ryan Rushing (L, 0-1) ran into some tough luck on the mound as IU found itself behind 4-2 at the midway point in the contest.
The offense for head coach Jeff Mercer continued to struggle to get runners into scoring position for most of the game. IU had just seven hits – three which came in the ninth inning – and three walks. The Hoosiers finished the game 2-for-14 with runners on base and 2-for-11 with two outs. They brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but redshirt senior catcher Jake Stadler flew out to center field to end the affairs.
Junior outfielder Devin Taylor hit his 47th career home run in the sixth inning, tying the program’s all-time record. The all-time mark is now held by four different players. He will attempt to move into the top spot by himself this weekend as IU hosts Maryland in a three-game conference set. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday (April 18).

Mason Roell had a slow-rolling single to the shortstop to plate a fourth in the inning.
Indiana State 4, Indiana 2

The next home run of his career will move him into sole possession of the IU program record.

Alabama, meanwhile, finished the 2024-25 season with a 28-9 record, reaching the Elite Eight, one year after advancing to the Final Four. Head coach Nate Oats lost four standouts and three more players to the transfer portal and NBA Draft, but has already started reloading via the transfer portal.

NOTRE DAME SOFTBALL
IRISH DEFEAT MICHIGAN STATE IN MIDWEEK CONTEST
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Notre Dame softball team defeated Michigan State 4-3 Tuesday evening to get back in the win column. The Irish are now 20-24-1 on the year.
How it happened
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Spartans took the lead early with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first.
Addison Amaral got Notre Dame on the board in the top of the third. After back-to-back singles by Caroline O’Brien and Emily Tran ahead of her, Amaral ripped a double that hit the base of the wall in center field, scoring both runs for the Irish as they took the lead 2-1.
Michigan State would hit another solo home run in the bottom half of the third to tie the game 2-2 after three innings.
It didn’t take long for the Irish to get that run back. After Rachel Allen walked, Micaela Kastor pinch ran for her, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jane Kronenberger. Coming off her first career multi-hit game Sunday at Virginia Tech, Rebecca Eckart stepped up to the plate and ripped a single back up the middle to score Kastor. The ball got past the center fielder, allowing Eckart to advance all the way to third. She later scored on another Spartan error to make it 4-2 Irish after the top of the fourth.
Shannon Becker took over to start the bottom of the fourth. Kastor, making her 18th start of the season, finished with four strikeouts over three innings, allowing just two hits and two runs. The Spartans scratched a third run off Becker to make it 4-3 Notre Dame after four.
Becker settled down in the fifth, throwing a 1-2-3 inning. The senior induced weak contact on all three batters to keep the Irish up a run.
Kami Kamzik relieved Becker in the bottom of the sixth, making her 25th appearance of the season. She tossed a scoreless sixth inning and secured the win with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Notes
Rachel Allen extended her on-base streak to 12 after a leadoff walk in the fourth. It’s the second-longest streak on the team (Sydny Poeck – 17 games).
Micaela Kastor made her 18th start of the season, going three innings and striking out four. She has now struckout 91 batters this season.
Addison Amaral drove in a pair with a double in the third inning. The Irish shortstop now has 10 doubles and 38 RBI on the season. She finished 2/3 on the evening.
Notre Dame will head to Durham, North Carolina for a three-game series at 17th-ranked Duke from Thursday-Saturday due to Easter Sunday this week.
BUTLER BASEBALL
CARDINALS EDGE BULLDOGS 3-2
The Ball State Cardinals improved to 27-11 overall with a 3-2 win at Bulldog Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs got a leadoff double to start the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn’t advance the runner leading to the one-run setback.
Each team had five hits in the contest. Scoring opened up in the second with BSU getting an RBI groundout followed by an RBI double to right. BU got an RBI single from Will Burgess in the fifth to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Husovsky gave the Cardinals an insurance run in the seventh with a single to left that scored Richter. That run and the first of the game were both unearned.
The Bulldogs made some noise in the eighth and Jack Bello was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the game 3-2. The comeback effort fell just short as Harker entered the game to pick up the save for BSU. He struck out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth.
Garza made the biggest impact on the outcome for BSU and therefore was credited with the win. The loss went to BU starter Simon Linde. The right-hander was sharp, striking out four over four innings.
Butler will now travel to Georgetown for a three-game series that begins on Thursday. Single games will follow on Friday and Saturday.
BUTLER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
BUTLER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ADDS SOUTH DAKOTA TRANSFER GABBY WILKE
6-2 forward Gabby Wilke has signed an athletic aid agreement to join the Butler women’s basketball program for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Wilke will have three years of eligibility remaining after spending her freshman campaign at South Dakota. She averaged 5.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game for the Coyotes.
“Gabby first and foremost is a winner and brings that mentality to our team,” Head Coach Austin Parkinson said. “Her ability to stretch the floor from the 3-point line as well as score on the block makes her a tough matchup to defend.”
Wilke was reliable for the Coyotes as a true freshman, appearing in all 31 games while averaging nearly 20 minutes of playing time per contest. She was inserted into the starting lineup 16 times and posted career numbers in a home win over Kansas City. Wilke went 5-for-7 from 3-point range against the Roos to score a team-high 21 points. She also impacted the outcome in a win over Northern Arizona with 13 points and a career-high eight rebounds.
Prior to her time in South Dakota, Wilke was a two-time Conference Player of the Year honoree at Beaver Dam High School. She led the Beavers to two conference titles and garnered All-State honors.
Wilke is the newest member of the Bulldog family, but the program is expected to make more roster announcements very soon.
Season tickets for the upcoming 2025-26 basketball season are also on sale now. Fans can email tickets@butler.edu or call the ticket office at 317-940-3647 for more information.
BUTLER MEN’S BASKETBALL
GONZAGA’S MICHAEL AJAYI SIGNS WITH BUTLER BASKETBALL
Michael Ajayi, who helped Gonzaga to a West Coast Conference Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth in his only season in Spokane, will join the Butler Basketball program for his final season of eligibility.
Ajayi, a 6-7 wing from Kent, Wash., has signed an athletic aid agreement for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
“These past two seasons have showcased Michael’s all-around game and potential,” said Butler coach Thad Matta. “Michael led the WCC in scoring during his season at Pepperdine, and contributed to a high level of winning with a physical, defensive presence last season at Gonzaga. His impact on both ends of the court is a major addition to our roster for the upcoming season. Michael is a high-character individual who is going to be a great fit at Butler.”
Ajayi helped Gonzaga to a 26-9 record during the 2024-25 campaign, including a 14-4 mark in the WCC. After winning the WCC Tournament, Gonzaga advanced to the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Ajayi averaged 6.5 points and 5.4 points per game for the Zags; his rebounding average was second on the team.
Ajayi arrived at Gonzaga after spending the 2023-24 season at Pepperdine, where he led the West Coast Conference in scoring at 17.1 points per game. He was second in the WCC, grabbing 9.9 rebounds per outing. He made 47 percent of his attempts from three-point range. Ajayi earned first team All-West Coast Conference honors following his season at Pepperdine.
Ajayi spent two years at Pierce Community College, where he was named the 2022 Northwest Athletic Conference West Region’s Most Valuable Player and the West Region’s Freshman of the Year after putting up 20.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
Ajayi is the third transfer addition who has been announced for the Bulldogs’ 2025-26 roster, joining Horizon League leading scorer Jalen Jackson from Purdue Fort Wayne as well as Yame Butler of Drexel.
Additional updates on both Butler’s 2025-26 roster and the team’s non-conference schedule will be announced soon.
IU INDY SOFTBALL
JAGS FALL IN MIDWEEK BATTLE WITH BOILERMAKERS
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The IU Indy Jaguars were unable to break through offensively in Tuesday’s non-conference road matchup, falling 3-0 to the Purdue Boilermakers at Bittinger Stadium.
Purdue struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Ashlynn Campbell laid down a bunt single to score Sage Scarmardo, giving the Boilermakers a 1-0 lead. The hosts added two more runs in the third on a sacrifice fly from Scarmardo and an RBI walk by Kylie Franks.
IU Indy managed three hits on the evening, with Molly Kable collecting two of them with a single and a double. Callie Dickerson added a double as well. Despite putting runners on base in several innings, the Jaguars were unable to capitalize, stranding six runners total.
The Jaguars’ pitching staff combined to hold Purdue scoreless over the final three innings. Clara Pharis (5-7) took the loss after allowing one run in two innings. Claire Stillwell, Dickerson and Kaylen Garland provided solid relief, with Dickerson and Garland working a scoreless inning each.
IU Indy returns to conference play later this week as they host Oakland for a three-game series. The Golden Grizzlies will be in Indy for a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 PM and a single game on Saturday at 1:00 PM. The Jags will also celebrate senior day on Saturday.
BALL STATE BASEBALL
BASEBALL SECURES SEASON SWEEP OF BUTLER WITH 3-2 DECISION AT BULLDOG PARK
INDIANAPOLIS – The Ball State baseball team had contributions from seven different pitchers and used timely hitting on its way to a 3-2 win at Butler on Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Park.
The Cardinals (27-11) secured the season sweep of the Bulldogs (12-24) with Garrett Harker shutting down the hosts after they started the ninth inning with a leadoff double.
Korbin Griffin had an RBI grounder to plate Ty Davis, and Max Kalk drove in Ben Giovannetti with a double in the second inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

SYCAMORES DROP SERIES FINALE TO EVANSVILLE, 4-2
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Indiana State fell short in the series finale against Evansville on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 4-2 decision at Cooper Stadium. With the win, the Purple Aces secured the series, taking two of three games from the Sycamores.
Indiana State struck first in the top of the opening inning. Madison Poulson and Morgan Goodrich started the game with back-to-back singles, then pulled off a double steal to move into scoring position. Poulson came home on a center field error following a flyout, giving the Sycamores an early 1-0 lead.
Evansville responded quickly in the bottom half of the frame as Adams launched a solo home run to right field, tying the game 1-1. The Aces kept the momentum in the third inning behind a bunt single from Warner and a two-run homer off the bat of Howe, putting them ahead 3-1.
The Purple Aces added to their lead in the fourth inning. Following a leadoff single by Adams and a walk to Frossard, pinch-runner Pye capitalized on a miscue to cross the plate, extending the advantage to 4-1.

The Sycamores added insurance runs on a Beck RBI double, Pena RBI single, and Garcia RBI ground out in building a 7-3 lead heading into the ninth inning.
IU mounted one final rally in the bottom of the ninth sparked by Tyler Cerny’s leadoff solo home run off Sycamore reliever Colby Morse. Carson Seeman (S, 1) retired three of the final four batters he faced, allowing just Tyler DeMartino’s RBI double cutting the Sycamores’ lead to 7-5 on his way to closing out his first save of the 2025 season.

VALPO BASEBALL
BASEBALL TO MATCH UP WITH MURRAY STATE FOR EASTERN WEEKEND SERIES
Valparaiso (8-23, 3-9 MVC)
vs. Murray State (24-9, 7-5 MVC)
Thursday, April 17, 3 p.m. – RHP Connor Lockwood
Friday, April 18, 1 p.m. – RHP Harry Deliyannis
Saturday, April 19, 1 p.m. – RHP Spencer Boynton
Emory G. Bauer Field (500) | Valparaiso, Ind.
Next Up in Valpo Baseball: The Valparaiso University baseball team will return home to Emory G. Bauer Field for a holiday-weekend series with Murray State. Please note that this weekend’s series begins a day early due to the Easter holiday, as the two teams will clash from Thursday through Saturday as opposed to the typical Friday through Sunday format.
Last Time Out: The Beacons got solid work from the bullpen with five innings of two-run ball, but a five-run fourth gave Notre Dame a lead it would not relinquish in Tuesday’s midweek matchup, a 7-1 victory for the hosts. Hunter Frost, Joe Seiber and Kaden Kiser all posted zeroes out of the Beacon bullpen. The Valpo bats registered seven walks but eked out just three hits in the defeat. A key moment came when Valpo loaded the bases on three walks in the seventh, but a payoff pitch was called strike three to the chagrin of the Valpo dugout, ending the inning instead of forcing in a run on a cold night in South Bend.
Following the Beacons: All three games this weekend will air on ESPN+. Todd Ickow (play-by-play) will have the call alongside Joshua Lipowski (Thursday), Brian Jennings (Friday) and Leo
Staudacher (Saturday). For links to live video and stats, visit ValpoAthletics.com. For in-game updates, follow @ValpoBaseball on X.
Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (210-355) is in his 12th season in charge of the program. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion.
A Look Back at 2024: Valpo finished 14-38 overall and 6-21 in Missouri Valley Conference play last season and hopes to return to the MVC Tournament field in 2025. Kaleb Hannahs earned Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors last season, while Kyle Schmack finished one home run shy of tying the program’s career and single-season records. The team launched 71 home runs, the second most in program history and most since 2001. Alex Ryan made an incredible leaping catch that was featured at No. 4 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays, robbing a grand slam as part of a 20-0 victory at UIC on April 28. The 2024 campaign also saw Valpo post a fielding percentage of .970 that ranked fourth in program history. The season also saw head coach Brian Schmack reach the 200-win threshold.
Series Notes: Valpo is 5-10 all-time against Murray State, including a three-game Racer sweep last year in Murray that featured a wild 11-10, 10-inning game in the series opener. Valpo has dropped four straight head-to-head matchups including a 2023 MVC Tournament game. Valpo did win the most recent Emory G. Bauer Field matchup 5-2 to salvage the final game of the 2023 regular-season series. The Beacons are 1-6 against the Racers since they joined The Valley. The Brown & Gold hope to secure its first series win against Murray State since 2012.
In the Other Dugout – Murray State
Picked to finish third in the MVC preseason poll.
Hold a 9-1 record in their last 10 games, most recently beating SEMO 4-3 at home on Tuesday after taking two of three from UIC over the weekend Kentucky.
Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Dan Skirka.
Coming off a 37-win season, the second-most wins in program history.
TRIO OF RELIEVERS WORK SCORELESS BALL ON TUESDAY AT NOTRE DAME
Three members of the Valparaiso University baseball team’s bullpen put up zeros by pitching one inning apiece without yielding a run including two hurlers who were returning to action after missing time with injuries. However, host Notre Dame used a five-run fourth to take command of the game and never looked back in a 7-1 victory at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend.
How It Happened
Freshman starting pitcher Nick Baffa (Glenview, Ill. / Notre Dame) had good success over the game’s first three innings, keeping the Fighting Irish off the scoreboard. He used a pair of strikeouts in the second to work around a leadoff double.
Notre Dame broke through in the fourth as Connor Hincks hit a two-run homer, part of a stretch where the Fighting Irish hit for the team cycle in the first four batters of the fourth then tacked on a Jayce Lee two-run homer for good measure, chasing Baffa from the game with the hosts in front 5-0.
Valpo went to the bullpen and got a good outing from Hunter Frost (Farmington, Minn. / Farmington) in his first action since incurring an injury on March 14 at Illinois. He did not allow any damage while recording all three outs of the fourth.
It was a day of returns on the mound as redshirt junior Joe Seiber (Homer Glen, Ill. / Lockport) saw his first action since March 28 after missing time with an injury. He came on for the fifth and worked a scoreless frame.
Valpo picked up its first run of the game in the sixth as Connor Giusti (Hoffman Estates, Ill. / Fremd) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and eventually came around to score on a ground ball to the left side of the infield by Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) that was thrown wildly to first.
Valpo loaded the bases on three walks in the seventh, but a payoff pitch with the bases loaded and two down was called strike three, to the chagrin of the Valpo dugout.
A solo homer started the Notre Dame seventh to extend the lead to 6-1, then lefty Kaden Kiser (Columbus, Ohio / Hamilton Township) entered the game and recorded all three outs in the inning without yielding any further damage.
Notre Dame scored one in the ninth to finish out the game’s scoring.
Inside the Game
The Beacons drew seven walks, the team’s highest total in the last 11 games dating back to seven on March 25 at Purdue and tied for the team’s most in the last 21 games.
The Irish held a 12-3 edge in the hit column.
Senior Connor Giusti (Hoffman Estates, Ill. / Fremd) reached base four times via three walks and a hit by pitch.
Kiser has pitched scoreless innings in each of his last two outings and was charged with a run in only one of his four appearances this season.
Up Next
The Beacons (8-23) will face a quick turnaround with this weekend’s conference series beginning on Thursday due to the Easter holiday. Valpo and Murray State will match up at 3 p.m. on ESPN+ to begin the set at Emory G. Bauer Field.
