NUGGETS FIRE COACH MICHAEL MALONE AND OUST GM CALVIN BOOTH IN STUNNING MOVE AS POSTSEASON LOOMS
Michael Malone, who coached the Denver Nuggets to the NBA title in 2023 and has led the team to eight consecutive winning seasons, was fired Tuesday in a stunning move that comes with less than a week in the regular season.
Also out: general manager Calvin Booth, whose contract will not be renewed. The Nuggets said David Adelman will become the coach for the remainder of the season.
Josh Kroenke, the vice chairman of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, said “it is with no pleasure” that the Nuggets made the change at coach.
“This decision was not made lightly and was evaluated very carefully, and we do it only with the intention of giving our group the best chance at competing for the 2025 NBA Championship and delivering another title to Denver and our fans everywhere,” Kroenke said.
The Nuggets are 47-32 this season with three games left but have dropped four consecutive games and are in a logjam of teams fighting for home-court advantage in Round 1 of the playoffs. Denver won the title in 2023 and lost a Game 7 at home in the Western Conference semifinals a year ago to Minnesota.
The four-game slide comes despite Nuggets star Nikola Jokic — a winner of three of the last four NBA MVP awards — having a historic season, averaging 30 points, 12.8 rebounds and 10.2 assists per game. But even that wasn’t good enough for Denver to enter the final week of the season certain of even having home court in Round 1.
After the most recent loss, a 125-120 defeat to Indiana on Sunday, Jokic was asked his biggest concern with the team right now.
“I don’t know. Maybe we just, maybe we just … I don’t know, actually,” Jokic said.
The Nuggets are hoping a shakeup might provide the answer.
Malone had the fourth-longest tenure of any active NBA coach, behind San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich, Miami’s Erik Spoelstra and Golden State’s Steve Kerr.
Malone won 471 regular-season games in Denver, 39 more than Doug Moe for the franchise’s all-time coaching lead.
“While the timing of this decision is unfortunate, as Coach Malone helped build the foundation of our now championship level program, it is a necessary step to allow us to compete at the highest level right now. Championship level standards and expectations remain in place for the current season, and as we look to the future, we look forward to building on the foundations laid by Coach Malone over his record-breaking 10-year career in Denver,” Kroenke said.
Malone had consistent success in Denver. The Nuggets finished with losing records in his first two seasons and posted winning records in his next eight years with the club.
This season’s postseason appearance will be the team’s seventh in a row; it has not clinched a playoff berth yet this season but is assured of finishing no worse than in the play-in tournament.
Starting with the first playoff appearance under Malone in 2019, the Nuggets got out of the first round six times in seven chances. They made the Western Conference finals in the Walt Disney World bubble in 2020 and then rolled to the championship by winning 16 of 20 playoff games in 2023.
It is the second time a postseason-bound team has fired a coach in the last two weeks. Memphis parted ways with Taylor Jenkins late last month, replacing him with Tuomas Iisalo on an interim basis.
Booth came to the Nuggets in 2017 as an assistant general manager and was promoted to GM in July 2020. He signed his most recent contract with the club in 2022.
Kroenke credited Booth “for helping put the final pieces in place for the roster that delivered Denver and our fans their first NBA championship.”
“Calvin’s knowledge of the game, his passion for scouting, and his long history as a player and executive in the NBA helped lift our organization to new heights which we will continue moving forward,” Kroenke said.
The Nuggets play Wednesday at Sacramento.
NBA ROUNDUP: CELTICS TOP KNICKS IN OT FOR 9TH STRAIGHT ROAD WIN
Kristaps Porzingis scored 34 points and tied a career high with eight 3-pointers as the visiting Boston Celtics beat the New York Knicks 119-117 in overtime Tuesday.
With their ninth straight win on the road, the Celtics secured their first four-game regular-season sweep of the Knicks since the 2019-20 season. By virtue of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ win over the Chicago Bulls, Boston (59-20) is locked in as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. New York (50-29) needs one more win or a loss by the Indiana Pacers to lock up the No. 3 seed.
Porzingis, the former Knick, had the biggest shot of the night, making a 3-pointer with 40.8 seconds left in overtime to break a 112-112 tie. The Knicks turned the ball over on their next possession and Jrue Holiday made four free throws in the final 12.6 seconds to clinch it for Boston.
Jayson Tatum scored 32 points for the Celtics. Jrue Holliday scored 16 points and Derrick White chipped in 14. For the Knicks, Karl-Anthony Towns scored 34 points, Jalen Brunson added 27 and Josh Hart finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists before fouling out.
Thunder 136, Lakers 120
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 42 points to lead Oklahoma City past Los Angeles as the Thunder avenged a loss to the Lakers two days earlier.
The Thunder snapped a two-game losing streak and set a franchise record for victories in a season. The previous record was set in 1995-96 when the franchise was in Seattle.
Lakers star Luka Doncic was ejected little more than four minutes into the fourth quarter when he picked up his second technical foul of the game. After his ejection, the Thunder went on a 13-4 run to take control.
Bucks 110, Timberwolves 103
Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded a triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, and Milwaukee stormed back from a 24-point deficit in the fourth quarter to post a win over visiting Minnesota.
Kevin Porter Jr. added 21 points off the bench for Milwaukee, which won its fifth game in a row. Bobby Portis scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in his return from a 25-game suspension for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy. The Bucks outscored the Timberwolves 40-13 in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 23-0 run.
Anthony Edwards scored 25 points on 10-for-27 shooting to lead Minnesota. Donte DiVincenzo scored 24 points off the bench and Naz Reid chipped in 17 off the bench for the Timberwolves, whose five-game winning streak ended.
Warriors 133, Suns 95
Stephen Curry amassed 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists, Brandin Podziemski scored 22 points, and visiting Golden State blew past Phoenix.
Trayce Jackson-Davis added 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Warriors, who won their sixth game in seven tries. Jimmy Butler III, Jonathan Kuminga, Kevin Knox II and Pat Spencer each put up 10 points for Golden State, which led by as many as 41 points and pulled even with the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies in a four-way for the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference standings.
Phoenix dropped its seventh straight game despite Devin Booker’s 21 points. Ryan Dunn and Grayson Allen chipped in 12 points apiece for the Suns, who are all but eliminated from play-in contention. They fell three games back of the 10th-place Dallas Mavericks with three games to go.
Clippers 122, Spurs 117
Ivica Zubac scored 24 points and grabbed 20 rebounds and James Harden added 21 points and 12 assists as Los Angeles continued its strong close to the regular season with a victory over San Antonio in Inglewood, Calif.
Norman Powell scored 25 points, Bogdan Bogdanovic added 19 and Derrick Jones Jr. had 18 for the Clippers, who are 15-3 since March 5. The Clippers are in fourth place in the Western Conference via a four-team tiebreaker, with three regular-season games remaining. The Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies are also all 47-32.
Harrison Barnes scored 24 points and Stephon Castle added 19 points and eight assists for the Spurs, who lost for the eighth time in nine games and already have been eliminated from postseason contention. Keldon Johnson scored 12 points.
Magic 119, Hawks 112
Paolo Banchero recorded his third straight double-double with 33 points and 10 rebounds as Orlando beat visiting Atlanta for its third straight win.
Orlando moved two games ahead of Atlanta for the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference with three games to play for both teams while the Hawks lost for the sixth time in their last eight games. The teams meet one last time in the regular-season finale.
Franz Wagner scored 22 points and Wendell Carter Jr. added 17 points, nine rebounds and a career-high six steals for Orlando, which leads the season series 2-1. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope finished with 15 points. Onyeka Okongwu matched his career high with 30 points and had 14 rebounds for Atlanta. Trae Young added 28 points and 10 assists.
Nets 119, Pelicans 114
Trendon Watford scored 11 of his 22 points in a 43-point third quarter for Brooklyn, which halted a five-game home losing streak with a win over New Orleans.
Drew Timme added 16 points and nine rebounds to lead a reserve unit that totaled 66 points for the Nets. Dariq Whitehead contributed 14 while Nic Claxton and Tosan Evbuomwan finished with 13 apiece.
Antonio Reeves scored 17 points as the Pelicans dropped their fourth straight and lost for the 15th time in 20 games. Karlo Matkovic also scored 17 and Jose Alvarado added 16.
Grizzlies 124, Hornets 100
Ja Morant scored 28 points as Memphis defeated host Charlotte, but the Grizzlies saw one of their starters injured on a scary fall.
Memphis rookie Jaylen Wells left the court on a stretcher late in the first half after crashing hard to the court. Wells suffered a broken right wrist but was awake and alert, with movement in his extremities. Wells was going up for a dunk when the Hornets’ KJ Simpson fouled him from behind in an undercut that left Wells in a vulnerable position. Simpson was ejected when the foul was upgraded to Flagrant 2.
Desmond Bane racked up 19 points, Zach Edey had 17 points and 19 rebounds and Jaren Jackson Jr. posted 14 points for the Grizzlies, who have won three in a row. Off the bench, Santi Aldama had 11 points and Scotty Pippen Jr. added 10 points. Miles Bridges led the Hornets (19-60) in their home finale with 13 points.
Pacers 104, Wizards 98
Pascal Siakam scored four of his game-high 24 points to jump-start a late-game run that powered host Indiana past Washington for its fifth win in a row.
A sluggish start left the Pacers playing from behind much of the way against the last-place Wizards. Crucial 3-pointers from Aaron Nesmith and Myles Turner provided Indiana with welcome relief on an otherwise dismal shooting night, with the team going just 9-for-35 (25.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, the Pacers limited the Wizards to 38-of-90 (41.8 percent) shooting from the floor, including 11-for-39 (28.2 percent) from long range. Alex Sarr scored 20 points and contributed 12 rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots. Washington’s Justin Champagnie added 20 points and a game-high 13 boards as the Wizards lost for the sixth time in seven games.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
FLORIDA’S RUN TO THE NATIONAL TITLE LIFTS THE GATORS TO NO. 1 IN THE FINAL AP TOP 25 MEN’S POLL
Florida is No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll of the 2024-25 season after winning the national championship.
The Gators (36-4) received all 61 first-place votes Tuesday, the second year the AP has released its last poll after the completion of the NCAA Tournament. Todd Golden’s team beat Houston 65-63 on Monday night to clinch the program’s third national title and first since Billy Donovan’s repeat titles in 2006 and 2007.
The win also lifted Florida to the top spot in the poll for the first time since the last four polls of the 2013-14 season.
“Obviously we have an incredibly talented group, one of the most talented groups individually in America,” Golden said after the title-clinching win. “I do think what separates us and has separated us all season long is our team talent, how our guys have played together and for each other all year. Because of that, we can call each other national champions for the rest of our lives.”
Houston (35-5) remained at No. 2 after its first title-game appearance since 1984, capping a season that saw Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars reach the Final Four for the second time in five seasons and beat Duke (35-4) in the national semifinals with a shocking late comeback.
The Blue Devils — who were No. 1 in the last two polls before March Madness — were third in what amounted to a swap with the Gators as the only change to the top quartet. Auburn (32-6) stayed at No. 4 after falling to Florida in the Alamodome, rounding out only the second all-chalk Final Four of 1-seeds since seeding began in 1979.
The top tier
Tennessee was fifth and Alabama sixth, joining Florida and Auburn as the headliners for the Southeastern Conference in a year in which the league regularly had the most AP Top 25 teams on the way to earning a record 14 tournament bids.
Michigan State was next at No. 7, followed by Texas Tech, which had Florida on the brink of defeat in the Elite Eight before Gators star Walter Clayton Jr. sparked a wild comeback. A Big Ten duo of Maryland and Michigan rounded out the top 10.
Climbing into set position
Purdue had the biggest jump, rising eight spots to No. 14 after a Sweet 16 loss to Houston on a last-second basket on a perfectly executed inbounds play. No. 12 Kentucky and No. 15 Arizona were next, each rising six spots after their own runs to the tournament’s second week.
In all, 12 teams moved up from the pre-tournament poll into their final position.
One last slide
Louisville had the biggest tumble, falling 11 spots to No. 21 after the Cardinals entered March Madness ranked 10th but received only an 8-seed and suffered a first-round loss to Creighton. Fellow Atlantic Coast Conference program Clemson was next with a 10-spot tumble to No. 22 after a first-round loss to 12th-seeded McNeese.
No. 25 Memphis fell nine spots after being shorthanded in a loss to 12th-seeded Colorado State, while No. 11 St. John’s fell six spots after shooting 28% in its second-round loss to Arkansas.
In all, eight teams fell from the pre-tournament poll.
Comings and goings
John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks checked in at No. 20 after reaching the Sweet 16, joining No. 18 Ole Miss as the final poll’s two additions. Like Arkansas, the Rebels upended a higher-seeded team (Iowa State) to reach the second weekend. Both were ranked previously this season.
Missouri (No. 23) and Oregon (No. 25) fell out from the pre-tournament poll.
Conference watch
The SEC led the way with eight ranked teams, a haul that included No. 19 Texas A&M. The Big 12 and Big Ten were next with five ranked teams each, followed by the ACC with three. The West Coast Conference had two and the American Athletic Conference and Big East each had one.
The final tally
Florida’s rise to No. 1 meant five different teams held the top spot of the AP Top 25 this season, starting with Kansas for the preseason and the first four weeks of the regular season. Tennessee followed for five weeks, then Auburn for eight and finally Duke for the last two pre-tournament polls. In all, 50 teams spent at least one week in the poll this season.
JASE RICHARDSON ENTERS NBA DRAFT, LEAVING MICHIGAN STATE A YEAR OR TWO SOONER THAN FATHER EXPECTED
Jase Richardson is entering the NBA draft, a year or two sooner than his father expected.
The Michigan State freshman announced his decision on social media Tuesday.
“I’m forever grateful to the Spartan community for all their support throughout the season and honored to be a Spartan Dawg,” Richardson wrote in a post.
His father, Jason Richardson, a former Spartans star and NBA standout, helped his son gather feedback from the league to assist in the decision-making process.
“I have a lot of ties in the NBA — know a lot of GMs and scouts — and heard he would probably be a late, lottery pick,” Jason Richardson said in an interview with The Associated Press. “He’s pursuing the dream he’s had since he was a kid.
“I’m surprised it happened this fast. I knew he was a really good basketball player, but I didn’t think he would be one and done. I thought he would take two years, maybe three, but he did some amazing things and helped his team accomplish some great things.”
The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 12.5 points, making 48.5% of his shots overall and 41.1% of 3-pointers. He helped Michigan State win the Big Ten title by three games and advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
KENTUCKY LANDS RE-COMMITMENT FROM ASU’S JAYDEN QUAINTANCE
Jayden Quaintance will be suiting up for Kentucky after all.
The former Arizona State star committed to coach Mark Pope’s Wildcats on Tuesday, his father Haminn Quaintance confirmed to ESPN.
Quaintance, a projected 2026 NBA lottery pick, announced last week that he was entering the transfer portal.
The 6-foot-9 forward originally committed to Kentucky as a five-star recruit in 2024 before backing off when coach John Calipari left to become the head coach at Arkansas.
“We always liked Kentucky,” Haminn Quaintance told ESPN. “… We were always hoping they’d come back around and recruit him. It didn’t make sense for Coach Pope last time, trying to take on one of Cal’s guys, but this time it really felt like he wanted him to be there.”
During his lone season in Tempe, Quaintance averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots in 24 games (all starts). He made the Big 12 All-Defensive and All-Freshman teams but the Sun Devils finished 13-20 (4-16).
Quaintance had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee on March 19 but is expected to be cleared for contact by September.
Quaintance graduated from high school a year early and was only 16 when he arrived at Arizona State. He is not old enough to be eligible for the 2025 NBA Draft because he doesn’t turn 19 until July 2026.
Kentucky has been active in the transfer portal. In addition to Quaintance, Pope has received commitments from Jaland Lowe (Pitt), Mouhamed Dioubate (Alabama) and Kam Williams (Tulane).
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
TA’NIYA LATSON TO JOIN SOUTH CAROLINA FROM TRANSFER PORTAL
Ta’Niya Latson, who was the Division I leading scorer at Florida State, announced on social media Tuesday that she is transferring to South Carolina.
The 5-foot-8 guard averaged a robust 25.2 points per game, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists this past season while shooting 45.1 percent from the field
She took to Instagram to announce her decision, which was a picture with her wearing a South Carolina jersey with the caption of “Feelin’ cocky!”
Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley then took to Twitter to revel in the news.
“A birdie just flew in nest!!” Staley wrote.
The news comes two days after South Carolina dropped an 82-59 decision to UConn in the Women’s NCAA Tournament national championship game.
Latson will reunite with former high school teammate Raven Johnson on the Gamecocks.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASBALL NEWS
MLB ROUNDUP: A’S POUND PADRES TO GET FIRST HOME WIN
JJ Bleday homered and knocked in three runs while Gio Urshela added three hits and three RBIs as the Athletics got their first win in their temporary home in West Sacramento, Calif., stopping the San Diego Padres 10-4 on Tuesday night.
The Athletics battered San Diego with 13 hits, with the bottom five spots in the order going 11-for-19. Jeffrey Springs (2-1) benefited from the support, going six innings to pick up the win. He allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) with two walks and four strikeouts.
Dylan Cease (1-1) took a pounding in four innings for the Padres, yielding nine hits and nine runs, with three walks and four strikeouts. It was one of a few unfortunate developments for a team that came in with the National League’s best record at 9-2.
After putting Jackson Merrill (hamstring) on the injured list before the game, San Diego had to hook second baseman Jake Cronenworth after the top of the third and right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. before the bottom of the fifth with apparent injuries.
Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 1
George Springer homered and Easton Lucas pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings to help visiting Toronto defeat Boston.
Bo Bichette collected three hits and drove in three runs for the Blue Jays, who beat Boston 6-2 on Monday. Springer and Tyler Heineman each had two hits. Lucas (2-0) limited Boston to three hits. He struck out eight and walked one.
Garrett Crochet, who signed a six-year, $170 million contract extension last week, made his first start at Fenway Park since he joined the Red Sox in an offseason trade with the Chicago White Sox. He allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, with four walks and five strikeouts.
Cardinals 5, Pirates 3
Victor Scott II and Brendan Donovan each had two hits and combined to drive in three runs to help St. Louis snap a four-game losing streak by beating host Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals scored all of their runs against Pirates ace Paul Skenes (1-1), marking a career high for the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year. Skenes fell to 0-3 in four career starts against the Cardinals.
St. Louis starter Sonny Gray (2-0) allowed one run on three hits and no walks. He struck out four on 71 pitches. Gray’s lone blemish came thanks to a solo home run by Bryan Reynolds.
Diamondbacks 4, Orioles 3
Corbin Carroll hit his fourth homer, Josh Naylor had a tie-breaking, two-run double and Arizona beat Baltimore in Phoenix on Tuesday to break a three-game losing streak.
Carroll had two hits and scored twice and Merrill Kelly (2-1) gave up three runs (two earned) and three hits in six-plus innings for the win. Carroll has reached base in all 12 games this season.
Kelly and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo were ejected by first base umpire Laz Diaz during the pitching change when Lovullo brought in Shelby Miller. The Diamondbacks argued that Tyler O’Neill had committed on a 3-1 check swing that was called a ball. That was the last batter Kelly faced.
Royals 2, Twins 1
Bobby Witt Jr. scored twice and manufactured the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Kansas City notch a victory over visiting Minnesota.
Witt reached base three times on a double, a walk and the eighth-inning error. The Royals had just three hits while beating the Twins for the second straight night and sixth consecutive time overall. John Schreiber (1-0) got the win, giving up two hits in 1 2/3 innings. Starter Cole Ragans struck out 11 in six innings. He gave up one run on four hits and walked none while throwing 96 pitches.
Carlos Correa had two of Minnesota’s seven hits. Minnesota’s Pablo Lopez departed after 4 2/3 innings due to right hamstring tightness. He gave up one unearned run, three hits and one walk and struck out six.
Astros 2, Mariners 1 (12 innings)
Victor Caratini singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning as visiting Houston beat Seattle to even the three-game series at one victory apiece.
Ryan Gusto (1-0) got his first major league victory, and Steven Okert pitched the bottom of the 12th for his second career save.
The Mariners went 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position. Jesse Hahn (0-1) took the loss, his first decision in the majors since 2020.
Angels 4, Rays 3
Luis Rengifo produced a two-out RBI single in the ninth as visiting Los Angeles topped Tampa Bay for its third win in a row.
Rengifo dropped a single into shallow center to score pinch runner Kevin Newman and give Los Angeles the lead against Pete Fairbanks (1-1). Los Angeles’ Kyle Hendricks was sharp in a scoreless five-inning outing. He allowed just two hits, struck out four and walked two. Kyren Paris slugged a two-run homer and walked as the Angels won for the seventh time in their first 10 games.
Opening a mammoth 13-game homestand, the Rays got a homer from Junior Caminero. Jonathan Aranda was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and a walk. Kameron Misner had an RBI triple, walked and was hit in the helmet by a pitch. Tampa Bay starter Shane Baz gave up just three hits, fanned six and walked four over seven innings of two-run ball.
Tigers 5, Yankees 0
Tarik Skubal pitched six scoreless innings and his Detroit teammates blasted four home runs in a win over visiting New York.
Skubal (1-2) held the Yankees to four hits and struck out six without a walk. Brant Hurter completed the shutout while striking out three in the last three innings. Spencer Torkelson, Zach McKinstry and Dillon Dingler homered in the fourth inning against Yankees starter Carlos Carrasco (1-1). Kerry Carpenter also went deep for the Tigers.
Carrasco gave up four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Paul Goldschmidt had three hits for the Yankees, who have lost three straight.
Guardians 1, White Sox 0
Nolan Jones drew a base-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to give Cleveland the win over visiting Chicago.
Carlos Santana grounded a single off the glove of diving first baseman Andrew Vaughn to start the ninth off Mike Clevinger (0-2). Kyle Manzardo and Jhonkensy Noel then drew back-to-back walks, bringing up Jones, who followed suit to end the game.
Guardians starter Ben Lively threw five shutout innings, allowing two hits, striking out four and walking three. White Sox starter Shane Smith blanked the Guardians on two hits over six innings in his second MLB start, striking out six and walking one.
Mets 10, Marlins 5
Pete Alonso continued his torrid start, producing two hits and four RBIs for surging New York in a win over Miami in the middle game of a three-game series at Citi Field.
Brandon Nimmo laced a tie-breaking RBI double in the fifth inning for the Mets, who have won six straight. Starling Marte, Juan Soto and Hayden Senger had two hits apiece, and Clay Holmes allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out a career-high 10 over 5 1/3 innings. His win was the first for him as a starter since his rookie season in 2018.
Liam Hicks collected three RBIs and Derek Hill hit a two-run homer for the Marlins, who have dropped four of five. Starter Connor Gillispie gave up two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two over four innings.
Nationals 8, Dodgers 2
James Wood homered twice and drove in five runs to lead Washington to a win over visiting Los Angeles.
Wood, who has three homers in his past two games, also singled and drew a bases-loaded walk for the Nationals, who have won four straight including two in a row against the Dodgers. Keibert Ruiz, Jacob Young and Dylan Crews had two hits each for Washington. Brad Lord pitched three scoreless innings in his first start of the season, allowing two hits with four strikeouts — including Shohei Ohtani twice — and two walks.
Andy Pages and Enrique Hernandez homered for the Dodgers, who have lost three straight and four of five since opening the season 8-0. Los Angeles starter Justin Wrobleski (0-1), making his season debut after being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City before the series, allowed eight runs on eight hits over five innings.
Braves 7, Phillies 5
Sean Murphy hit a three-run home run and collected four RBIs in his first game of the season, helping Atlanta post a victory over visiting Philadelphia.
In the opener of a three-game series, many anticipated a pitchers’ duel between last year’s top two finishers in the 2024 National League Cy Young Award race. However, Atlanta’s Chris Sale gave up five runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings while Zack Wheeler was charged with five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 frames. The Braves’ bullpen quieted the Phillies’ bats with 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
Kyle Schwarber (3-for-3, HR, three RBIs) and Nick Castellanos (3-for-4, two RBIs) led Philadelphia’s offense.
Cubs 10, Rangers 6
Dansby Swanson’s two-run single in the eighth inning capped a four-RBI game and lifted host Chicago to a win over Texas.
Swanson also had a solo home run and a sacrifice fly in the victory, which sent the Rangers to their second straight loss. His single in the eighth was followed by a two-run single by Pete Crow-Armstrong, punctuating a frame in which Texas committed two errors. Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki also had two RBIs each for the Cubs’ 12-hit attack.
Cubs starter Jameson Taillon went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out six. Patrick Corbin made his first start for Texas and gave up three runs on five hits in four innings. Josh Jung (3-for-4, RBI), Jonah Heim (2 RBIs) and Wyatt Langford (2-for-4, RBI) sparked the Rangers’ offense.
Brewers 7, Rockies 1
William Contreras homered among his two hits, Brice Turang and Christian Yelich also went deep and Milwaukee beat Colorado in Denver.
Rhys Hoskins finished with two hits and Jackson Chourio doubled and tripled for Milwaukee, which has won six of its last seven after starting the season with four straight losses.
Brenton Doyle homered and Zac Veen had a bunt single in his major league debut for Colorado. Veen, who finished 1-for-4, is the second Rockies player to make his debut in as many games. Pitcher Chase Dollander did it on Sunday against the Athletics.
Reds 1, Giants 0
Nick Lodolo teamed with two relievers on a four-hitter, Spencer Steer doubled and scored the game’s only run on an infield out and Cincinnati won a second straight pitchers’ duel against host San Francisco.
Lodolo (2-1), who beat the Giants 3-2 in the second game of the season in Cincinnati, was even better in the rematch. He limited the hosts to three hits in six innings, walked one and struck out three. After Lodolo was pulled, having thrown 87 pitches, Graham Ashcraft allowed one hit over two innings before Emilio Pagan worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
One night after a 2-0 win in the opener, the Reds scored the only run in the third after Steer led off with his double against Giants starter Landen Roupp (0-1). Steer took third on Jake Fraley’s single to center. Jose Trevino grounded into a forceout at second and Steer scored. Roupp kept the deficit at one run through six, during which he allowed seven hits and struck out four.
NHL NEWS
NHL ROUNDUP: HISTORIC COMEBACK LIFTS CANUCKS OVER STARS
The Vancouver Canucks became the first team in NHL history to overcome a three-goal deficit in the final minute of regulation to stun the host Dallas Stars 6-5 in overtime on Tuesday night.
After Pius Suter recorded the final two goals of regulation to cap a five-goal third period, Kiefer Sherwood scored with 1:16 left in overtime.
After Mikael Granlund’s empty-netter for Dallas with 2:21 left in regulation seemingly put the game away at 5-2, the Canucks made history.
Aatu Raty scored with a minute left in regulation. With goaltender Thatcher Demko (23 saves) on the bench, Suter scored from up close with 29.1 seconds remaining. Suter scored again with 5.9 left to tie the contest and stun the Stars’ faithful.
Avalanche 3, Golden Knights 2 (SO)
Charlie Coyle scored the shootout winner after notching two assists as Colorado edged Vegas in Denver.
Valeri Nichushkin and Jimmy Vesey scored in regulation as the Avalanche erased a 2-0 deficit to improve to 7-2-1 over its past 10. Colorado goalie Scott Wedgewood made 19 saves.
William Karlsson and Brayden McNabb scored for the Golden Knights, who clinched home ice for the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs thanks to the point. Akira Schmid stopped 34 shots.
Blue Jackets 5, Senators 2
Columbus ended a three-game losing streak and a lengthy goalless drought with a win over visiting Ottawa.
Mathieu Olivier and Justin Danforth tallied a goal and an assist apiece. Dmitri Voronkov, Sean Monahan and Adam Fantilli also scored, while Kent Johnson helped on both third-period goals. Elvis Merzlikins made 33 saves.
Thomas Chabot scored a goal and assisted on Fabian Zetterlund’s first goal in a Senators sweater. Claude Giroux, Drake Batherson and David Perron earned assists, and Anton Forsberg stopped 30 shots. Ottawa still secured its first postseason appearance since 2017 thanks to the Montreal Canadiens beating the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Tuesday.
Panthers 3, Maple Leafs 1
Eetu Luostarinen scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and Florida closed ground in the race for the Atlantic Division crown with a win over visiting Toronto in Sunrise, Fla.
Gustav Forsling and Carter Verhaeghe also scored for the Panthers, who got 17 saves from Sergei Bobrovsky in halting a five-game losing streak. John Tavares scored for the Maple Leafs and Joseph Woll made 34 saves.
The Maple Leafs, who had a four-game winning streak end, lead the Atlantic by two points over the Tampa Bay Lightning and four over Florida, which won the season series over Toronto 3-1.
Canadiens 4, Red Wings 1
Josh Anderson scored the game-winning goal with 9:12 remaining to lead host Montreal past Detroit and closer to a playoff berth.
Montreal moved eight points ahead of Detroit and the New York Rangers for the Eastern Conference’s final wild-card berth (though the Red Wings and Rangers have one more game to play than the Canadiens).
With the game tied at 1-1 in the third period, Anderson collided with Detroit defenseman Albert Johansson, who lost his helmet behind the Detroit goal. That allowed Anderson to wide open to tip in a pass from Christian Dvorak.
Sabres 3, Hurricanes 0
James Reimer made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season and the 31st of his career as host Buffalo took down Carolina. It was Reimer’s career-high seventh straight win.
Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch and JJ Peterka scored for the Sabres, who won their fifth straight game. Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 15 shots for the Hurricanes, who lost their third in a row.
Thompson’s goal his 44th of the season and eighth in five games. Tuch’s short-handed goal was his 34th of the season and his NHL-leading sixth short-handed tally.
Predators 7, Islanders 6 (OT)
Fedor Svechkov scored 1:56 into overtime to give host Nashville a wild comeback win over New York, whose playoff hopes may have suffered a major blow.
The Predators came back to tie the score four times in the game, capped by scoring a pair of late goals to force overtime. Svechkov then ended things with a well-placed wrist shot from the slot for the rookie’s first career OT winner.
With five games remaining on their schedule, the Islanders are eight points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the final Eastern Conference wild-card slot.
Bruins 7, Devils 2
David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists to reach the 100-point mark for the third consecutive season and Boston set a season high in goals scored in beating host New Jersey in Newark.
Pastrnak scored and assisted on the first two goals — the 12th and 13th straight Bruins goals to which he contributed, a franchise record.
Michael Callahan scored his first NHL goal while Jakub Lauko and Fraser Minten posted their first since being acquired at last month’s trade deadline. New Jersey has its three-game winning streak snapped.
Penguins 5, Blackhawks 0
Tristan Jarry stopped all 26 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season as host Pittsburgh bullied Chicago to earn a split of the teams’ home-and-home set following a loss Sunday.
The Penguins’ veterans carried the load offensively as Kevin Hayes tallied twice and Sidney Crosby, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang all found the back of the net.
Bryan Rust added a pair of assists to surpass the 60-point mark for the first time in his career. Crosby’s goal allowed him to extend his home point streak to 14 games.
Utah Hockey Club 7, Kraken 1
Mikhail Sergachev scored a goal as part of a three-point night and Dylan Guenther collected three assists to lead Utah past Seattle in Salt Lake City.
Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley both collected one goal and one assist for Utah (36-30-12, 84 points), which has won four of five games to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. It was the franchise’s highest-scoring game since moving from Arizona to Utah before this season.
Utah goaltender Karel Vejmelka, who started his 21st consecutive game, made 18 saves. Starting Seattle goalie Joey Daccord stopped 22 of 29 shots before being pulled after the second period. Victor Ostman, summoned from the minors with Philipp Grubauer out due to an illness, stopped all 12 shots faced in his NHL debut.

COLLIN MORIKAWA SAVORS FULL FIELD AT MASTERS, SENSES GOLF TOOK PRE-LIV LIFE FOR GRANTED
Collin Morikawa went through most of last season “guessing” whether he could execute any given golf shot and decided the only way forward was to return to the starting line. He’s fairly confident LIV Golf and the PGA Tour could benefit from doing the same.
“It’s really hard to do that, really hard to take two steps back. I don’t think a lot of guys could admit they’ve taken two steps backwards,” Morikawa said at Augusta National Golf Club on Tuesday. “And that’s what I had to do. Start from the very basics of my golf game into college and say, ‘What are the pieces we’re going to, not rebuild, but just fit back together. Piece together and layer one on top of the other.’ The only way to do that is to take two steps back.”
Morikawa, the World No. 4, said he’s excited to share the course with one-time Tour peers and top-ranked players who’ve jumped to LIV Golf for the first time since the Ryder Cup in Paris, and wondering if his peers took the harmony of professional golf for granted.
“I enjoy it. I think everyone enjoys it. All those guys were amazing to me. They still are. Look, I think the golf world enjoys seeing everyone playing together. I don’t think anyone would say no to that,” Morikawa said of sharing the Masters’ field with Jon Rahm and others who’ve defected from the traditional circuit.
“It’s amazing how much we take for granted … in life, I think.”
Asked what he meant by the ending statement, Morikawa continued: “You look back at whenever LIV started, this whole debacle started, back then when I first turned pro, no one really complained. Right? You just, we enjoyed it. But then this all happened.
“You take things for granted — you get my point? You look back and you’re like, man, we had it pretty good. Everyone always talks about money. I think the money things needs to get pushed aside. It’s just being golfers, being professional golfers. Playing. These weeks are special now. You don’t take them lightly.”
Morikawa said he welcomes any solution that’s best for the PGA Tour.
“I haven’t sat in those meetings and I know guys have sat countless hours. I thank them for that. That’s up to the whole board and stuff. They’ll figure something out one way or the other,” he said.
After playing 13 holes on the course Tuesday in a practice-round loop, Morikawa said he’s learned in a peek at the course and in five previous starts and three consecutive top-10 finishes in the major that preparation can only carry a player so far.
“We’re always searching for new answers, searching for a new way to hear it,” Morikawa said. “Life moves on. Your body moves on. … It’s all just kind of feels and guesses. It’s a never-ending search. You are going to continue to do it because you want to get better. What I realized through the process was, I could have all the answers but I’ve got to go play golf. Playing golf is the most important part.”

INDIANA BASEBALL
SWANSON SETS TONE IN HOMESTAND FINALE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior lefty Deron Swanson (W, 2-1) was only supposed to be in the game for an inning or two. But on a day that IU desperately needed a standout performance on the mound, the Fort Wayne, Indiana native provided 13 outs and 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
The Indiana Baseball team (19-14, 9-6 B1G) needed just five pitchers to finish off a 7-5 midweek victory over Ball State. Senior southpaw Ryan Kraft (SV, 1) was called on with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth but picked up the final three outs to preserve a 7-5 win over Ball State on Tuesday (April 8) at Bart Kaufman Field.
IU finished off a season-long nine-game homestand with a 6-3 record. The Hoosiers won the final four games during the stretch by a combined score of 45-13. The effective start to the month of April has helped boost the IU RPI all the way up to 67 heading into this weekend’s series with Illinois.
Timely hitting was the name of the game for the home team on Tuesday night. Redshirt sophomore Korbyn Dickerson matched the Big Ten lead with his 15th home run of the season – a mammoth two-run blast in the second inning. Freshman shortstop Cooper Malamazian had a two-run single to hand the Hoosiers the lead for good.
Junior second baseman Tyler Cerny recorded his 39th hit-by-pitch, breaking one of the more peculiar program records. He moved past Chris Hervey (38 – 2006-09) to take over the top spot on the all-time IU list in hit-by-pitches. He has 78 free passes in his three-year career, 39 of those coming via the hit-by-pitch.
Coming off of four games in just over 50 hours, the Hoosiers will get just a little bit of rest before heading to Champaign to begin the back half of the Big Ten slate. IU and Illinois have exchanged turns winning on each other’s home fields the last two years. IU will hope to continue that trend this season as it looks to keep climbing up the league table. First pitch on Friday (April 11) is set for 7:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CT.

UNEARNED RUNS BURN BOILERMAKERS IN 10-INNING DEFEAT
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball gave up five unearned runs over the final three frames, falling to Indiana State 9-8 in 10 innings Tuesday in the Boilermakers’ fourth one-run defeat over the last seven games.
Purdue (20-12) dropped its eighth consecutive game overall – the program’s longest skid since March 2021 – and is now 0-5 in one-run games this season. The Boilermakers also lost four one-run games during a six-game stretch in March of last season before they rebounded and went 15-3 overall from March 31 to May 3.
Avery Moore’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth after the Sycamores (16-16) had scored four times in the top of the frame.
CJ Richmond hit a two-run homer in his Alexander Field debut, giving Purdue a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning.
A two-out error at shortstop in the top of the eighth kept the inning alive, loading the bases for the top of the ISU lineup. Carter Beck and Nomar Garcia capitalized on the extra out, connecting for consecutive two-run doubles down the left field line – with a pitching change sandwiched in between.
Indiana State had runners on first and second with one out in the 10th inning when Garcia hit a chopper to third base. Brandon Anderson’s throw eluded second baseman Ty Gill, allowing pinch runner Jordan Austin to score as the ball rolled into right center field.
On a day in which they used nine pitchers, the Sycamores went to weekend starter Ty Brooks with the game tied 8-8 and Brooks retired all six batters he faced across the ninth and 10th innings to close out the victory for the visitors.
The Boilermakers scored seven times over the first five innings but left 14 runners on base – all over the first eight innings – to match a season high. They left the bases loaded in the second, fourth and seventh innings. Purdue was 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and is batting just .205 with RISP while going 2-10 over its last 12 games.
Albert Choi and Anderson both reached base safely four times. Richmond finished the day with four RBI after registering an RBI ground out and bases-loaded walk in his first two plate appearances.
With Camden Gasser aboard following a leadoff walk in the fifth inning, Choi hit a ground ball through the vacated right side on a hit and run. Choi turned it into a hustle double and followed Gasser home on Anderson’s subsequent single up the middle. That sequence gave Purdue a 7-3 lead.
The Sycamores scored their first three runs on homers as Garcia and Carlos Pena both went deep over the first three innings. Hits from Jeremy Martinez led to runs in the sixth and eighth innings, igniting the comeback. The Boilers lost when leading after seven innings for the first time this season.
Purdue drew 14 free passes (9 walks, 5 HBP) but only three of those runners came around to score. The Boilermakers drew four consecutive walks in the second inning, a frame in which a one-out single by Gill was the lone ball put in play in fair territory.
Gavin Beuter’s three innings of one-run ball made him the most effective of the six Purdue pitchers that took the mound. Isaac Milburn surrendered just one hit over two innings of relief, headlined by a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth after the Boilers had tied the game.
Purdue is back in action this weekend when it hosts Rutgers for a three-game series. First pitch Friday is slated for 6 p.m. ET.

JAGS SIGN INDIANAPOLIS-NATIVE JAXON EDWARDS FOR UPCOMING SEASON
INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball program announced a sixth signee and the third transfer in this year’s recruiting class as Jaxon Edwards (Indianapolis, Ind. / Cathedral HS) signed to join the Jaguars. Edwards, a 6-foot-5 swingman, spent last season at St. Bonaventure, but was limited to just five games due to injury.
“In this class, we’ve made an emphasis on getting longer and more athletic, particularly on the wings,” head coach Paul Corsaro said. “Bringing in someone like Jaxon, who’s also an Indy kid, immediately addresses that need. He’s a hard-nosed kid who plays with a high motor and toughness. We think he can be elite defensively and guard multiple backcourt positions and offensively, he can do a variety of things. He can get downhill, he can shoot it and he finishes well at the rim.
“We’re excited to get him back home and continue to attract some of the top talent from across the state.”
Edwards played just 36 minutes total at St. Bonaventure this past season after suffering an injury in November. Edwards played the 2023-24 season at Valparaiso, playing in 31 games with 21 starts. He averaged 7.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while blocking 40 shots, ranking fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference with 1.29 blocked shots per game. He scored in double-digits nine times that season while shooting better than 40 percent from the floor. Edwards played his freshman season at Murray State, making 11 appearances, totaling 29 minutes.
Edwards was part of Cathedral’s 2021-22 Class 4A IHSAA State Championship squad, averaging 10.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He was a two-time all-state honoree and earned a spot on the Indiana All-Star Team following his senior year. He was also named to the Junior All-Star Team after averaging 10.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore infielder Parker Martin was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week after leading the Screaming Eagles to a 4-0 week, including a three-game sweep of Morehead State University. The honor is the first for Martin at USI and the first by a Screaming Eagle since Caleb Niehaus earned the player award in February 2023.
Martin was impressive in USI’s non-conference win over Northern Kentucky University and the three-game sweep of Morehead State University that propelled the Screaming Eagles into first in the OVC. The sophomore batted .538 (7-13) with two runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, and nine RBIs in the four games.
In the series with Morehead State, Martin started the series by sealing the game-one comeback with a three-run blast in the 9-5 victory and helped the Screaming Eagles to a doubleheader sweep with a season-high five-RBI performance in the 14-6 nightcap victory.
For the season, Martin is batting .340 (35-103) with 15 runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, and 26 RBIs. The .340 average is third on the team, while the 26 RBIs ranks second.
Martin and the Screaming Eagles (16-15, 7-2 OVC) resume action this evening when they start a nine-game road swing with a non-conference visit to Western Kentucky University (27-5) at 5 p.m. in Bowling Green, Kentucky. USI resumes OVC action this weekend when it travels to Tennessee Tech University (21-12, 6-3 OVC) for a three-game set April 11-13 in Cookeville, Tennessee.
USI RUNS OUT OF INNINGS, FALLS TO #25 WKU, 13-9
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball rallied in the final innings before falling to #25 Western Kentucky University, 13-9, Tuesday afternoon at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Kentucky. USI, which saw its season-best six-game winning streak come to an end, is 16-16 overall, while WKU goes to 28-5.
USI fell behind early with WKU taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Hilltoppers sealed the victory three innings later when they scored 11 times in the fourth to lead, 12-0.
The Eagles began to chip away at the deficit, scoring four times in the top of the sixth to trail 12-4. USI junior designated hitter Cole Kitchens highlighted the four-run frame with a three-run blast to left. The home run was Kitchens’ team-best fifth of the season.
USI closed the gap further in the seventh, scoring three times to trail, 12-7. USI senior leftfielder BJ Banyon started the scoring by crossing the plate on a balk, while junior third baseman Patrick McLellan doubled in junior shortstop Clayton Slack and junior catcher Charlie Marisca with the sixth and seventh runs, respectively.
After WKU responded with a tally to push the lead back to six, 13-7, USI rallied for the third straight inning with two more runs on an RBI walk by senior centerfielder Khi Holiday and an RBI single by Kitchens to close the margin to 13-9.
The eventual 13-9 final score would be as close as the Eagles could get after going down in order in the ninth inning.
Offensively, Kitchens finished the day two for five with four RBIs and a home run, while McLellan went two-for-five with a pair of RBIs. Marisca also had a pair of hits in the loss.
USI sophomore right-hander Brady Watts started and got the loss for the Eagles. Watts (0-1) allowed a run on one hit while striking out one in two innings of work.
Up Next for the Eagles:
The Screaming Eagles continue the nine-game road swing this weekend in OVC play when they visit Tennessee Tech University for a three-game set April 11-13 in Cookeville, Tennessee.
TTU is 21-12 overall and 6-3 OVC after taking two of three from Western Illinois University last weekend. The Golden Eagles host Lipscomb University Wednesday before hosting USI. The Screaming Eagles lead the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, 4-2, after winning two of three at home last year.
VALPO SOFTBALL
SOFTBALL SLOWED BY UIC TUESDAY
The Valpo softball team suffered its first shutout of Missouri Valley Conference play Tuesday, falling 3-0 to visiting UIC at the Valpo Softball Complex.
How It Happened
UIC took the lead seven pitches into the game, as a leadoff triple was followed by an RBI single.
The Flames got a two-run single from their nine-hole hitter to take a 3-0 lead in the second inning, which turned out to be the game’s final runs.
Valpo had a leadoff base hit in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but was unable to take advantage of any of them. The Beacons’ best opportunity at scoring came with a leadoff double in the fifth, but that runner was erased on a line-drive double play before a single and a UIC error.
Valpo’s last seven batters were retired in order as the Flames completed the shutout.
Inside the Game
Valpo was blanked for just the third time this season and for the first time since a March 9 loss at Marshall.
The Beacons were unable to advance a runner past second base in the defeat.
Valpo was limited to just four hits and two walks, as no Beacon reached base more than once.
Kim Rodas (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon) had Valpo’s lone extra-base hit with her third double of the season.
Mack Gallagher (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East [MSU Moorhead]) walked in the first inning to extend her on-base streak to 16 straight games and push her season total to 28 — most in the MVC and tied for eighth-most in a season in program history.
Erin Metz (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) started in the circle and took the loss, falling to 6-2 as she tossed the first 1.2 innings. Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) threw 3.1 shutout innings of relief, while Azalya Lopez (Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt [MSU Moorhead]) closed it out with two hitless innings.
Next Up
Valpo (17-18, 6-8 MVC) stays at home this weekend for a three-game MVC series against Illinois State. The series begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
