LAMAR JACKSON, RAVENS END CHARGERS’ WINNING STREAK
Lamar Jackson accounted for three touchdowns and Derrick Henry rushed for 140 yards on 24 carries to help the Baltimore Ravens record a 30-23 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night in the Harbaugh Bowl at Inglewood, Calif.
Justice Hill added a long scoring run and Rashod Bateman caught a touchdown pass to help Baltimore coach John Harbaugh improve to 3-0 against younger brother Jim, the coach of the Chargers.
Jackson completed 16 of 22 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a touchdown for Baltimore (8-4), which won for the eighth time in 10 games. Mark Andrews caught a touchdown pass and converted a stunning fourth-down gamble for the Ravens.
Justin Herbert was 21 of 36 for 218 yards and rushed for a score for the Chargers (7-4), who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Cameron Dicker kicked three field goals for Los Angeles.
John and Jim Harbaugh exchanged a quick handshake and hug after the contest.
The big meeting between the brothers was Baltimore’s 34-31 win over Jim’s San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl following the 2012 regular season. The other meeting was on Thanksgiving Day in 2011 when the host Ravens won a 16-6 decision.
Baltimore star linebacker Roquan Smith (hamstring) sat out the Monday contest.
Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins (knee), a former Baltimore player, exited in the first half. He gained 40 yards on six carries and had three catches for 19 yards.
The Ravens took a 23-16 lead when Jackson hit Andrews on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 12:32 left in the game. The two-point conversion pass failed.
Baltimore added on when Hill exploded for a 51-yard scoring run to make it a 14-point margin with 7:24 remaining.
Gus Edwards ran in from the 1 for the Chargers with 46 seconds left, and the Ravens recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal it.
Baltimore overcame a 10-point second-quarter deficit to lead 14-13 at halftime.
The Ravens got on the board with Jackson’s 10-yard run with 7:48 left in the half.
After the two-minute warning, Baltimore lined up to go for it on fourth-and-1 from its own 16-yard line. Andrews, the tight end, lined up behind center and took the snap and gained 2 yards for a first down.
The gamble paid off when Jackson tossed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Bateman to give the Ravens a 14-10 lead with 24 seconds left. The drive covered 93 yards on eight plays.
Dicker booted a 52-yard field goal as time expired in the half.
The Chargers scored the first 10 points on Herbert’s 5-yard run in the opening quarter and Dicker’s 42-yard field goal with 11:26 left in the second quarter.
RAMS WR DEMARCUS ROBINSON ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF DUI
Hours after making a touchdown reception on “Sunday Night Football,” Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Demarcus Robinson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol announced Monday.
Per the police report, Robinson was driving a Dodge sedan in excess of 100 mph on US-101 at 5:13 a.m. on Monday in Woodland Hills, Calif.
Officers stated the Robinson showed “objective signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment.” He was issued a citation before being released to “a responsible party,” per the CHP.
The Rams did not make an immediate statement in the aftermath of the news, according to NFL.com.
Robinson caught a 2-yard scoring pass in the third quarter of the Rams’ 37-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in Inglewood, Calif. His only other reception in the contest went for 13 yards.
The 30-year-old veteran is in his ninth NFL season, his second with the Rams. He has 26 receptions for 384 yards and six touchdowns through 11 games (all starts) this year.
The Chiefs selected Robinson in the fourth round of the 2016 draft out of Florida. He spent six years in Kansas City, helping the team win the Super Bowl after the 2019 season. Robinson played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2022.
In 141 career NFL games (62 starts), Robinson has 245 catches for 2,892 yards and 26 scores.
WEEK 12 WAS FILLED WITH SLOPPY PLAY, ESPECIALLY ON SPECIAL TEAMS: ANALYSIS
Missed kicks. Poor tackling. Costly penalties.
Week 12 was filled with sloppy play around the NFL, leading to some upsets and surprising outcomes.
Jayden Daniels nearly led Washington to an improbable comeback down 10 in the final two minutes against Dallas only to fall short because Austin Seibert’s extra point sailed wide left.
After a field goal and successful onside kick, Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin on an 86-yard catch-and-run touchdown to bring the Commanders within one point with 21 seconds remaining. But Seibert’s point-after attempt failed and the Cowboys returned the ensuing onside kick for a touchdown to seal a 34-26 victory.
Special teams were atrocious for both teams. Seibert also missed his first extra point and Washington allowed KaVontae Turpin’s 99-yard kickoff return for a score earlier in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys missed a field goal, had another blocked and had a punt blocked.
“What a wild special teams moment of blocked punts, kicks, kickoff returns, blocked field goals, just a number of things going to that spot,” Commanders coach Dan Quinn said.
Washington (7-5) was a 10 1/2-point favorite over the undermanned Cowboys (4-7) but ended up losing a third straight game.
The Houston Texans were 8-point favorites against the lowly Tennessee Titans and let the game come down to Ka’imi Fairbairn missing a 28-yard field goal that would have tied it with just under two minutes left.
C.J. Stroud threw two interceptions, was sacked four times and the Texans (7-5) committed 11 penalties, including an illegal shift that negated a go-ahead 33-yard TD pass to Nico Collins on the drive that ended with Fairbairn’s miss in the 32-27 loss.
The Titans (3-8) averaged just 17 points per game before putting 32 on the scoreboard against Houston’s defense that entered No. 4 in the league.
“We didn’t do anything well enough to win this game,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Out of all the positives that we did have, there were way too many negatives. Too many negative plays. Score, get a penalty, get touchdowns called back. Get penalties on special teams. Just way too many negative plays defensively, like unexplainable explosives for touchdowns. We just didn’t play good across the board.”
The San Francisco 49ers didn’t have quarterback Brock Purdy, star edge rusher Nick Bosa and All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams against Green Bay. That was no excuse for their undisciplined performance. The Niners committed nine penalties and their tackling was shoddy in a 38-10 loss to the Packers.
The defending NFC champions are 5-6 with a trip to Buffalo (9-2) coming up. They’re still only one game behind Seattle and Arizona in the NFC West.
“I’m really not concerned right now about how many guys were missing. We didn’t play good enough, so that’s not a factor. But, when you are missing some guys, you do have to be better. When you have those penalties and we didn’t stop the run like we did and we had those three turnovers in the second half, that’s how you get embarrassed.”
Coming off their first loss of the season, the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs needed Patrick Mahomes’ heroics on the final drive to beat Carolina 30-27. Mahomes ran 33 yards to set up Spencer Schrader’s 31-yard field goal as time expired.
Kansas City had 10 penalties, including a pass interference that gave the Panthers (3-8) another chance to make the 2-point conversion that tied the game with 1:46 remaining. On defense, the Chiefs (10-1) suddenly shaky unit gave up 334 total yards against Bryce Young and an offense that entered last in the NFL.
“We’ve got to do better. We’re doing good in the red zone but that’s only a third of the field,” Chiefs safety Bryan Cook said. “We will go back and look at the film to see what we’re doing week to week, and see the tendencies that we’re giving up, and just move forward from there. At the end of the day, we’re all vets in the room for the most part. … got to go back to the drawing board and see what we’re doing and correct it from there.”
The Vikings allowed the Bears to recover an onside kick with 21 seconds left and Caleb Williams followed with a 27-yard pass to D.J. Moore to set up Cairo Santos’ tying 48-yard field goal. But Minnesota won in overtime, 30-27.
The Chiefs and Vikings overcame their mistakes in narrow victories. The Commanders, Texans and 49ers couldn’t. They have to be better down the stretch to make a playoff run.
RAIDERS QUARTERBACK GARDNER MINSHEW IS OUT FOR THE SEASON WITH A BROKEN COLLARBONE
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew is out for the rest of the season with a broken collarbone, coach Antonio Pierce said Monday.
Pierce said Aidan O’Connell, who is on injured reserve with a broken thumb, could be available to start when the Raiders visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday.
The Raiders also could turn to Desmond Ridder, who replaced Minshew when he was injured late in Sunday’s 29-19 loss to the Denver Broncos.
SEASON, CAREER MIGHT BE OVER FOR EAGLES DE BRANDON GRAHAM (TRICEPS)
Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham’s rollercoaster Sunday night ended with the 15-year veteran contemplating football mortality with a triceps injury he expects to end his 2024 season.
Graham, who previously said this would be his final year in the league, moved into third place on the Eagles’ all-time sacks list with a second-quarter takedown of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford but left the game injured in the second half.
“I trust God, so I’m just enjoying myself,” Graham said. “I’m about to enjoy this little rehab and I’m about to enjoy leading this team the rest of the year. As soon as I can be out there I’m going to be out there.
“Man, boy, man, boy, I was having fun out there. And we’re still gonna have fun. But I’m out for the year.”
Graham posted career sack No. 76.5 to move ahead of Clyde Simmons behind only Trent Cole and Reggie White on the Eagles’ all-time sacks list. The 36-year-old is 9.0 sacks from tying Cole (85.5) and has played every game of his career — a franchise-record 206 — with the Eagles since being drafted in 2010.
Graham will be placed on injured reserve but said his daily duty to the Eagles as a captain and voice in the defensive line meeting room will not change. As for where he goes from here, he wasn’t ready to say Sunday night. But Graham did appear to prop the door open for a 16th NFL season.
“I was feeling good,” Graham said. “I hated it to go like this, but at the end of the day I don’t have any regrets. I put it all in today like I do every week. We’ll go from here. I’m hoping we’re holding that trophy regardless.
“I don’t wanna go out like this but if it’s pointing toward that, we’ll see. I don’t know what the team will be feeling at that time, but for me, I don’t wanna go out like this. I definitely want to be able to finish a full season before I’m done, but if that ain’t in the cards, I’m content where I’m at, too.”
The fourth defensive lineman drafted in 2010 behind Ndamukong Suh (Lions), Gerald McCoy (Buccaneers) and Tyson Alualu (Jaguars), Graham was the 13th overall selection in the draft. He turns 37 in April but isn’t the oldest active defensive lineman in the NFL this season. Dolphins defensive end Calais Campbell turned 38 in September.
Graham had 3.5 sacks in 2024 after posting 3.0 in 17 games last season. He had double-digit sacks only once (11 in 2022) but authored one of the most significant defensive plays in franchise history with a strip-sack of Tom Brady in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LII victory.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
AP TOP 25 EXTRA POINTS: NO. 14 ASU, NO. 17 IOWA ST FRONT-RUNNERS IN WHAT COULD BE WILD BIG 12 FINISH
With more than half of the 16 teams still mathematically alive to make the conference championship game, the Big 12 will command a lot of attention in the final week of the regular season.
No. 14 Arizona State and No. 17 Iowa State would play for the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff spot on Dec. 7 if they both win Saturday and there’s a four-way tie for first place. There are seven other teams that begin this week with hopes, slim in most cases, of getting into the game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Last week it was No. 19 BYU and No. 23 Colorado that had the inside track to the championship game. Arizona State beat the Cougars and Kansas knocked off the Buffaloes, and here we are.
“Everybody counted us out, I think, two weeks ago,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said after his team beat Utah 31-28. “We didn’t flinch. We didn’t waver. And we just keep fighting.”
The Cyclones were national darlings the first half of the season as they won seven straight games to match the best start in program history. Back-to-back losses to Texas Tech and Kansas followed. Now they’ve won two straight heading into “Farmageddon,” their rivalry game against Kansas State at home.
“Right now they’ve got the pen and they continue to write the story,” Campbell said of his players, “and I hope they will continue to write it the way they’ve got the ability to write it. Unwavering. Tough, mentally tough, physically tough. This group has stood for it every step of the way.”
Arizona State has been an even better story than the Cyclones. The Sun Devils have six more wins than they did last season, when they went 3-9. They were picked to finish last in their first year in the Big 12. They’ll go for their fifth straight victory when they play at Arizona on Saturday.
“These guys came off no momentum and everybody doubting them, and everybody is still doubting them. That’s what makes this special,” second-year coach Kenny Dillingham said. “Hopefully the expectations become higher. I don’t know if there’s a way we can exceed expectations more than we’re exceeding them right now.”
Checking in on five of the Top 25:
No. 1 Oregon
The Ducks were idle Saturday after clinching a spot in the Big Ten championship game with their win at Wisconsin on Nov. 16. Oregon can go 12-0 in the regular season for the first time since 2010 if it beats Washington at home this week. Oregon’s only two losses last season came against the Huskies, both decided by three points. The first was a top-10 matchup in the regular season and the second was a top-five matchup in the Pac-12 championship game. The Ducks are 19 1/2-point favorites this time, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.
No. 2 Ohio State
The Buckeyes’ showdown with upstart Indiana combined with Michigan’s dropoff after winning the national championship have lowered the volume on this week’s meeting with the Wolverines at the Horseshoe. If Michigan beats Ohio State a fourth straight time and it keeps the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten championship game and playoff … well, there’ll be lots of noise in Columbus then.
No. 3 Texas
The Lone Star Showdown returns to the gridiron for the first time since 2011, when Texas and Texas A&M were in the Big 12. The Longhorns head to No. 20 Texas A&M on a four-game win streak. The Aggies have lost two of three after Saturday’s four-overtime loss at Auburn. The winner advances to the Southeastern Conference championship game against Georgia.
No. 11 Boise State
The Broncos are tied with Notre Dame for the second-longest active win streak, at nine games, and they seem to have adopted a survive-and-advance mantra. They trailed 23-point underdog Wyoming in the fourth quarter before winning 17-13 and clincing a spot in the Mountain West championship game. They won their previous game 42-21 against San Jose State but didn’t pull away until the fourth quarter. Two weeks ago they beat a three-win Nevada team 28-21.
No. 22 Illinois
Just when you think Illinois is about to cash in for the season, they do what they did against Rutgers. The Illini were down 31-30 when they lined up for a 58-yard field goal with 14 seconds left. Ethan Moczulski missed. But wait. Rutgers called timeout before the snap, and Bret Bielema thought better of trying another kick and sent his offense back on the field. Luke Altmyer passed to Pat Bryant for the winning 40-yard touchdown. The Illini won’t play for the Big Ten title, but they have a chance for nine wins and a nice bowl.
Extra Points
Ohio State played in three of the five regular-season top-five matchups and won three of them. The Buckeyes lost to Oregon and beat Penn State and Indiana. … Kansas’ 37-21 win over Colorado made the Jayhawks the first FBS team with a losing record to beat three straight Top 25 opponents. The Jayhawks, who were 2-6 a month ago, will be bowl eligible if they win at Baylor. … Nebraska ended the longest power conference bowl drought with its 44-25 win over Wisconsin. The Cornhuskers haven’t played in a bowl since 2016.
ALABAMA LOSES STARTING LINEBACKER DEONTAE LAWSON TO A SEASON-ENDING INJURY
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson will miss the rest of the season with an injury.
Coach Kalen DeBoer, who has described it as “a lower extremity injury,” said Monday that Lawson is out for Saturday’s game against Auburn and the postseason.
Lawson was hurt in the first half of the Crimson Tide’s 24-3 loss to Oklahoma. They fell from seventh to No. 13 in the latest AP Top 25 poll.
He ranks second on the Tide with 76 tackles and also has 6 1/2 stops for loss, a pair of sacks and four pass breakups.
“Just an amazing leader,” DeBoer said. “Chosen team captain by the team. I can see not just what he means to us on the field but just the love that our players have for him, especially those that have been through multiple years seeing what he pours into it. I know we all feel for him. We appreciate everything he’s been doing.
“Obviously you greatly miss everything he does on the football field, but you love having that guy in the locker room leading your team.”
The two-year starter also wears the helmet communication system coaches use to call in plays.
Justin Jefferson, who has 45 tackles and two sacks, replaced him against Oklahoma and is expected to get the start against the Tigers.
Alabama already had lost linebacker Que Robinson to a season-ending arm injury.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
KANSAS STAYS AT NO. 1 AHEAD OF SHOWDOWN VS. NO. 11 DUKE; OLE MISS, MISSISSIPPI ST BACK IN AP TOP 25
Kansas remained solidly entrenched at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll Monday ahead of its showdown with No. 11 Duke in Las Vegas, while a pair of schools from the Magnolia State elbowed their way back into the rankings.
Ole Miss returned to the poll at No. 23 while Mississippi State made its season debut at No. 25.
The Jayhawks received 51 of 62 first-place votes from the national panel of media, putting them well ahead of two-time reigning national champion UConn, which was second with six first-place votes. Gonzaga was third with two first-place votes, Auburn was next with three, and Iowa State rounded out a top five that was unchanged from the previous week.
There’s a good chance for movement next week, though, with a host of high-profile matchups in holiday tournaments, and that matchup between the Jayhawks and Duke on Tuesday night in the Vegas Showdown.
“Oh yeah, I’ve watched them,” said Kansas coach Bill Self, who picked up his 800th career win by beating UNC Wilmington last week. “They’re talented across the board. They’re starting three freshmen, and everybody’s going to talk about the one (Cooper Flagg), but the other two are potential lottery picks, if not lottery picks too.”
So do the Jayhawks, who have already beaten No. 12 North Carolina and Michigan State this season.
Tennessee climbed four spots to No. 7 in this week’s poll, followed by SEC rivals Kentucky and Alabama. Marquette was 10th after beating then-No. 6 Purdue and Georgia last week to reach 6-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
The Blue Devils and Tar Heels were followed by Purdue, which fell seven spots in the poll. Indiana and Wisconsin made it three straight Big Ten schools, while Cincinnati, Baylor, Florida, Arkansas and Texas A&M rounded out the top 20.
The last five were Creighton, Ole Miss, Arizona, Mississippi State and BYU. The Wildcats narrowly extended their run in the AP Top 25 to 61 weeks — the fourth-longest active streak in the nation — after back-to-back losses to Wisconsin and Duke.
“We didn’t play great,” Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said after the loss to the Blue Devils, “so now we need to take a step back and figure out why. Are there some schematic problems? Are there some problems with how our personnel is kind of put together? And those are the things we’re going to take a look at. I love the guys. I mean, I like the plan. But obviously when it’s not going as well as you would like, you have to be honest with yourself and try to figure it out.”
In and out
Xavier returned to the poll for the first time since the final poll of the 2022-23 season ahead of its trip to the Fort Myers Tip-Off beginning Monday night. Ole Miss is back in the Top 25 after briefly dropping out, while Mississippi State is back after spending two weeks in the poll last November but just six weeks total over the past six years.
Those three entered at the expense of Illinois, St. John’s and Rutgers. The Illini lost to Alabama last week, while St. John’s fell to Baylor and Georgia. Rutgers lost 79-77 at Kennesaw State, which beat a ranked team for the first time in school history.
Rising and falling
Marquette made the biggest climb this week, moving up five spots to No. 10. The Golden Eagles catch a breather this week with Stonehill and Western Carolina before back-to-back showdowns with No. 5 Iowa State and No. 15 Wisconsin.
Purdue, Creighton and Arizona all dropped seven spots but remained in the poll. The Boilermakers lost to Marquette while the Bluejays lost to in-state rival Nebraska. The Wildcats dropped to 2-2, the first time they have been .500 at any point in a season since they were 3-3 to start the 2017-18 season.
Conference watch
The SEC leads the way with nine of the Top 25 teams this week, including four in the top 10: Auburn, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama. The Big 12 is next with six, including three of the first six in top-ranked Kansas, Iowa State and Houston. The Big East had four in the poll, the Big Ten three and the ACC two.
TENNESSEE F J.P. ESTRELLA (FOOT) OUT FOR SEASON
Tennessee sophomore forward J.P. Estrella announced Monday he will have season-ending foot surgery.
He missed the past three games with an injured left foot and could pursue a medical redshirt.
The 6-foot-11 Estrella averaged 4.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 10.3 minutes in the first three games of the season.
“This has been a lingering injury and it is important to get it addressed,” Estrella posted on social media. “While I’m saddened that I won’t be able to compete the remainder of the season, I remain so excited to be a part of this program and will do everything I can to support my brothers as we continue to work towards our goals.”
The Volunteers (6-0) defeated Baylor 77-62 on Friday to win the Baha Mar Championship in Nassau, Bahamas.
“I’ll attack my rehab process and be back better than ever next season,” Estrella posted. “In the meantime, I can’t wait to see all of you at Food City Center and share a whole bunch of W’s with you. Go Vols.”
Estrella was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023 out of Brewster Academy in South Portland, Maine. The 247 Sports composite ranked him as the No. 8 center and No. 61 player nationally.
Estrella competed in 25 games off the Tennessee bench as a freshman in 2023-24, averaging 1.6 points and 5.0 minutes per game.
TOP 25 ROUNDUP: MEMPHIS STUNS NO. 2 UCONN IN MAUI
Tyrese Hunter tossed in a game-high 26 points to lead Memphis to a 99-97 upset victory over No. 2 UConn on Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
The Tigers (5-0) connected on 12 of their 22 3-point attempts in the win. The loss ended a 17-game winning streak dating back to last season for the Huskies (4-1), the two-time defending national champions.
It was 92-92 when UConn’s Liam McNeeley was called for an offensive foul with 40.3 seconds left. UConn coach Dan Hurley received a technical for arguing the foul call, and PJ Carter made all four free throws to give the Tigers a four-point lead.
Memphis will play Michigan State in the semifinals on Tuesday. UConn will face Colorado, which fell 72-56 to the Spartans on Monday. Tarris Reed Jr. had a team-high 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for UConn before he fouled out.
No. 4 Auburn 83, No. 5 Iowa State 81
Johni Broome made a tip-in with 1.2 seconds left to give the Tigers a come-from-behind victory over the Cyclones in the opening round of the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Broome finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for Auburn (5-0) while Chad Baker-Mazara led the Tigers’ surge by scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half.
Keshon Gilbert scored 23 points for Iowa State (3-1). Next up for Auburn is a Tuesday semifinal against No. 12 North Carolina. Iowa State will oppose Dayton on Tuesday in the consolation bracket.
No. 12 North Carolina 92, Dayton 90
RJ Davis scored 30 points, including four key free throws down the stretch to help the Tar Heels complete a comeback from 21 points down to beat the Flyers in the nightcap of opening-round play at Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Davis shot 10-for-11 at the foul line and 4-for-10 from 3-point range en route to his game-high scoring performance. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished five assists. Seth Trimble shot 10-for-14 from the floor and 5-for-5 at the free-throw line in a 27-point effort for the Tar Heels (4-1). He pulled down 10 rebounds.
Nate Santos led six Dayton scorers in double figures with 15 points. Amael L’Etang added 13 points, Malachi Smith had 12 points, and Enoch Cheeks scored 11 points. All four made at least two 3-pointers, as the Flyers went 14-for-32 (43.8 percent) from deep as a team.
No. 19 Arkansas 109, Maryland-Eastern Shore 35
Karter Knox scored 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Johnell Davis and Boogie Fland added 16 points apiece as the Razorbacks beat the Hawks in Fayetteville, Ark.
Billy Richmond III and Zvonimir Ivisic chipped in 14 points each for Arkansas (5-1), which won its fourth game in a row.
Maryland-Eastern Shore (2-7) shot 23 percent from the floor and 15.4 percent (4 of 26) from 3-point range. Ketron Shaw and Jose Cuello topped the Hawks with seven points apiece.
No. 22 Xavier 75, South Carolina 66
Zach Freemantle scored 16 points as the Musketeers kept their perfect record intact, holding off the Gamecocks for a victory at the Fort Myers Tip-Off in Florida.
Freemantle knocked down 6 of 8 shots and also had nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks for the Musketeers (6-0), who appeared in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll this week for the first time this season. Dailyn Swain bundled 14 points, six rebounds and five steals for Xavier. Ryan Conwell added 13 points, Dayvion McKnight scored 11 and Jerome Hunter had 10.
Collin Murray-Boyles led the Gamecocks (3-3) with 13 points, six rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals before fouling out with 14 seconds left. Jamarii Thomas added 11 points and six rebounds.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEWS
UCLA MOVES UP TO NO. 1 IN AP TOP 25 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL POLL FOR FIRST TIME IN HISTORY
UCLA is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll after a historic win that lifted the school to its first appearance in the top spot.
The Bruins knocked off South Carolina, the defending national champion that had held the top spot in the previous 23 polls, on Sunday with a dominant 77-62 victory that snapped UCLA’s 0-20 record against No. 1 teams. It came in front of a raucous, star-studded crowd, too.
“I think the piece that really hits me is that we’re doing something for the first time in school history and we shared it with decades of alum,” UCLA coach Cori Close said Monday as the poll was released. “It was great to have so many alumni in our locker room to share it with. The people that blazed the trail for us we’re walking in is really special.”
UCLA, which was No. 5 in the poll last week, earned 20 first-place votes from the 32-member national media panel. UConn remained second, garnering nine first-place votes after a historic week of its own with coach Geno Auriemma setting the NCAA all-time victories record.
Notre Dame, which pulled off its own upset over the weekend in Los Angeles by beating then-No. 3 USC, moved up to third. The Fighting Irish received the other three No. 1 votes in a week that saw only four teams remain in the same spots from last week’s poll.
South Carolina dropped to fourth after its 43-game winning streak came to an end. Texas was fifth. USC fell to sixth with LSU, Oklahoma, Kansas State and Maryland finishing off the top 10. Iowa State dropped from eighth to 15th after a 12-point loss to Northern Iowa.
The Bruins are the 26th different school to hold the No. 1 spot in the history of the women’s Top 25 that began in the 1976-77 season.
“We came here saying we want to be an elite basketball program and to be in that company as the 26th program ever to be a No. 1 team is significant,” Close said. “I’m grateful.”
Iowa’s back
Iowa entered the Top 25 for the first time this season jumping into the poll at No. 22.
The Hawkeyes made it all the way up to No. 2 last season behind star guard Caitlin Clark, who is now flourishing in the WNBA. This year’s team is 6-0 and has used stellar defense to stay unbeaten so far, holding four of its six opponents to under 60 points. Baylor fell out of the poll after a loss to Indiana.
Climbing the charts
Illinois moved up to No. 19 this week, the school’s best ranking since it was 13th on Jan. 17, 2000. With South Carolina’s loss, the Illini now have the longest active winning streak in the country with 10 consecutive victories. The team won the inaugural WBIT last season and is 5-0 this year.
Gamecock dominance
South Carolina had been No. 1 in 61 of the past 62 polls with the lone exception coming in the preseason Top 25 on Oct. 17, 2023, when then-defending champion LSU was the top choice. The Gamecocks then moved back up to No. 1 in the first regular season poll, climbing from No. 6, the biggest leap in the history of the poll to the top spot.
The last time South Carolina was not No. 1 before that was March 15, 2021, the final poll that season.
How good have the Gamecocks been recently? The loss to UCLA was the Gamecocks’ biggest margin of defeat since the 2019 Sweet 16 and the school’s first road loss since December 2021.
Coach Dawn Staley says her team will get back to work.
“Taking a loss will help us focus on anybody that we play,” she said.

Magic 95, Hornets 84
Franz Wagner scored 21 points and Jonathan Isaac drained three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as visiting Orlando wiped away three miserable frames to win against Charlotte.
Sparked by its shooting from the perimeter, Orlando turned a 62-58 hole into an 88-77 lead in the fourth and ruined a stellar outing from Hornets guard LaMelo Ball. The Magic hit 14 of 20 shots in the fourth period, including 6 of 12 from 3-point range.
Ball racked up 44 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while Brandon Miller provided 20 points and 10 boards for the Hornets, who had won their past four home games.

NHL NEWS
NHL ROUNDUP: NICO HISCHIER GETS NATURAL HAT TRICK IN DEVILS’ WIN
Nico Hischier’s natural hat trick in the second period led the New Jersey Devils to a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators on Monday in Newark, N.J.
It was Hischier’s first hat trick in his eight NHL seasons, as the forward ended his 10-game goal drought in epic fashion. Despite the recent scoring slump, Hischier leads New Jersey with 13 goals this season.
Erik Haula and Justin Dowling also scored for New Jersey, and Johnathan Kovacevic had two assists. Jacob Markstrom stopped 19 of 21 shots for the win. The Devils are on a three-game winning streak, and they are 8-2-0 in their past 10 games.
Filip Forsberg and Zachary L’Heureux scored for the Predators, who are 2-3-2 in their past seven games. Juuse Saros stopped 26 of 30 shots before being replaced by Scott Wedgewood to start the third period. Wedgewood stopped all 15 shots faced in the relief effort.
Lightning 8, Avalanche 2
Anthony Cirelli scored in his sixth straight game and Brandon Hagel had four of his career-high five assists in Tampa Bay’s five-goal first period as the Lightning buried visiting Colorado.
Cirelli set the NHL’s longest goal streak this season with a quick score from the slot with just 14 seconds left in the first period. His ninth tally left him just two games from matching the Tampa Bay record for most consecutive games with a goal. Hagel set a franchise record with four helpers in the first period, then added another in the second.
For Colorado, Ivan Ivan scored twice as the club lost for just the second time in eight games (6-2-0). Goalie Justus Annunen was replaced in the first after allowing three goals and later returned. He surrendered five total on 16 shots. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 14 shots in middle relief.
Blues 5, Rangers 2
Brayden Schenn scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period as visiting St. Blues pulled away for a victory over slumping New York.
The Blues earned the win a day after firing coach Drew Bannister and replacing him with Jim Montgomery. The Boston Bruins fired Montgomery last week, and he signed a five-year deal with St. Louis on Sunday. Schenn scored his fourth goal this season 72 seconds into the final period and Zack Bolduc recorded his first career two-goal game.
Will Cuylle registered his first career two-goal game but the Rangers dropped a third straight game for the first time this season. New York, which played without Chris Kreider (upper-body injury), fell to 7-7-0 since opening the season on a six-game points streak (5-0-1).

Golden Knights 5, Flyers 4 (SO)
Jack Eichel scored the lone goal in a shootout as Vegas rallied for a victory over host Philadelphia.
Eichel and Ivan Barbashev each had a goal and an assist in regulation for Vegas, which recovered from an early 3-0 deficit to improve to 3-1-0 on its five-game road trip. Pavel Dorofeyev and Tanner Pearson also scored, while Ilya Samsonov made 32 saves before making two stops in the shootout.
Philadelphia concluded its homestand with a 2-2-1 record despite getting a goal and an assist from Morgan Frost and the first NHL goal from Emil Andrae. Sean Couturier and Matvei Michkov also scored for the Flyers, while Ivan Fedotov made 26 saves.

The reigning Stanley Cup champion Panthers fell to 1-6-0 in their past seven games. They got a goal from Niko Mikkola and 27 saves from backup goalie Spencer Knight.
Red Wings 4, Islanders 2
Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond scored the tying and game-winning goals less than three minutes apart in the third period for Detroit, which came back to beat New York in Elmont, N.Y.
It was the second third-period comeback win against the Islanders in the past five days for the Red Wings, who won for just the third time in nine games (3-5-1). Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson also scored for Detroit, and Alex Lyon made 27 saves.
Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri tallied for the Islanders, who have lost four of five (1-3-1) while blowing third-period leads in all four losses. Semyon Varlamov recorded 17 saves.

BASEBALL NEWS
Pitcher Yusei Kikuchi and Los Angeles Angels agree to a $63 million, 3-year contract, AP source says
Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a $63 million, three-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal, first reported by the New York Post, was subject to a successful physical.
The 33-year-old Kikuchi gets $21 million annually during the contract, which raises his Major League Baseball earnings to $142 million over nine seasons.
An All-Star with Seattle in 2021, Kikuchi was 9-10 with a 4.05 ERA in 32 starts this year for Toronto and Houston, which acquired him on July 30 for 23-year-old right-hander Jake Bloss, rookie outfielder Joey Loperfido and minor league first baseman Will Wagner.
Kikuchi was 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts with the Astros, striking out 76 and walking 14 in 60 innings. His four-seam fastball averaged 95.5 mph this year, the highest of his big league career.
He is 41-47 with a 4.57 ERA in six seasons with Seattle (2019-21), Toronto (2022-24) and Houston.
Kikuchi signed with the Mariners ahead of the 2019 season when Seattle agreed to a contract that earned him $43 million over three years. The Mariners also paid a $10,275,000 posting fee to the Pacific League’s Seibu Lions. He signed with Toronto in March 2022, agreeing to a $36 million, three-year contract.
The Angels have been the most aggressive team in baseball so far this offseason. Kikuchi joins a projected rotation that includes left-handers Tyler Anderson and Reid Detmers and right-handers José Soriano and Kyle Hendricks, who left the Chicago Cubs as a free agent and agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract.
Right-hander Griffin Canning was traded to the Atlanta Braves for outfielder and designated hitter Jorge Soler on Oct. 31. Los Angeles also reached a $12 million, two-year contract with catcher Travis d’Arnaud.
The Angels went a franchise-worst 63-99, their ninth straight losing season and first since losing Shohei Ohtani in free agency to the Dodgers. They have not reached the playoffs since 2014.
RICO CARTY, WHO WON THE 1970 NL BATTING TITLE WITH THE ATLANTA BRAVES, DIES AT 85
Rico Carty, who won the 1970 NL batting title when he hit a major league-best .366 for the Atlanta Braves, has died. He was 85.
Major League Baseball, the players’ association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. A family friend told Listín Diario — a newspaper in Carty’s native Dominican Republic — that he died Saturday night in an Atlanta hospital.
“Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players’ association said in its statement.
The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization.
“While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement.
Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year.
The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise’s first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh.
Carty had his best year in 1970, batting .366 with 25 homers and a career-best 101 RBIs. He started the All-Star Game after he was elected as a write-in candidate, joining Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the NL outfield.
Carty batted .299 with 204 homers and 890 RBIs over 15 years in the majors, also playing for Cleveland, Toronto, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs. He retired after the 1979 season.

REPORT: COLTS WR JOSH DOWNS (SHOULDER) IS WEEK-TO-WEEK
Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs is week-to-week with a shoulder injury, NFL Network reported Monday.
He left Sunday’s 24-6 loss to the Detroit Lions with the injury and is a “long shot” to play in Week 13 at the New England Patriots, per the report.
Downs was injured after a 7-yard catch in the fourth quarter when he was tackled from behind and appeared to land on his shoulder.
Downs, 23, leads the Colts (5-7) with 53 receptions and ranks second on the team in receiving yards (594) in 10 games (six starts) this season. He shares the team lead with four touchdown catches.
Drafted in the third round in 2023, Downs has 121 catches for 1,365 yards and six touchdowns in 27 games (15 starts).
INDIANA PACERS
GAME REWIND: PACERS 114, PELICANS 110
On the second leg of a back-to-back, the Indiana Pacers relied on a superstar performance from their All-NBA point guard to gut out a win.
Led by a masterful 34 points and 13 assists by Tyrese Haliburton, the Pacers (8-10) outlasted the New Orleans Pelicans (4-14), 114-110, on Monday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Haliburton finished just one made 3-pointer shy of tying his franchise record for a game, draining 9 of 18 shot attempts from deep.
The win is the first for the Blue & Gold this season on the second night of back-to-back games. Indiana is in the midst of a four-game homestand, and will host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday before the Detroit Pistons visit Friday for an NBA Cup game.
“This was an important win,” Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said postgame. “This is a big week for us.”
Indiana shot 47.3 percent as a team, going 17-for-47 from 3-point range, while the Pelicans finished 51.7 percent from the field, including 9-of-33 from three.
After Haliburton, Pacers center Myles Turner registered 17 points and nine rebounds, Pascal Siakam had 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Bennedict Mathurin and Quenton Jackson each chipped in 12 points. Jackson made a career-best four 3-pointers in the game.
Trey Murphy III topped the visitors with 24 points, scoring 20 of those in the first half, and veteran guard CJ McCollum had 23 points. Yves Misi also supplied 16 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for the Pelicans, and former Indiana Mad Ant Elfrid Payton logged 14 points and 21 assists for the visitors.
The Pacers led at the end of each of the first three quarters, but never by more than four points. After taking a four-point lead into the final frame, the teams battled back-and-forth until clutch playmaking by Haliburton helped finish it.
Indiana built a pair of big leads in the first half but couldn’t hold on to them, as they led 59-57 at the break. The Pacers led by as many as 15 points in the first quarter, and 17 points in the second quarter, but the Pelicans used scoring streaks at the end of each frame to make it close.
The Blue & Gold shot 53 percent in the first half and made nine threes, as Haliburton had 14 points and seven assists Siakam added 12 points. Murphy led all scorers with 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting at the break.
Indiana came out red-hot from the field, but led just 29-25 at the end of the first quarter after the Pelicans rallied at the close of the frame.
The Pacers used a combined 27-8 run to lead by 15 points seven minutes into the game, using 8-0 and 9-2 spurts during the spree to go up 27-12. Haliburton buried a trio of 3-pointers, and Siakam added seven points during the stretch.
The double-digit lead was short-lived, however, as New Orleans responded with a 13-2 stretch in the final four minutes of the first quarter. Brandon Boston Jr. accounted for six points, Murphy hit a 3-pointer, and Payton converted a close-range bank shot with one second left to make it a four-point game.
Murphy scored 11 points in the second quarter, shooting 4-for-6 from the field, to help his team stay within distance of the lead despite another big Indiana run.
After exchanging baskets, a 15-4 Pacers scoring stretch, highlighted by threes from Myles Turner, Quenton Jackson and Haliburton, extended the Blue & Gold lead to 49-35 with 5:24 left in the half.
New Orleans then mustered a 19-4 run in the final five minutes of the half to make it a four-point game at the break.
Neither team could get much separation in the third quarter, but a mini 8-2 Pacers run midway through the period helped the Blue & Gold take an 87-83 lead into the final frame.
Haliburton was excellent in the third quarter, registering 10 points on 3-for-5 shooting from deep, while also dishing out three dimes and swiping two steals in the period. The Pacers struggled to contain McCollum in the third, as he scored nine points for his squad in the frame.
Indiana started 1-for-8 shooting in the fourth quarter, and the Pelicans took advantage by constructing a 8-2 run to lead 91-89 with 8:25 remaining.
Turner then scored seven consecutive points for Indiana before Jackson and Haliburton drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Pacers in front 102-95 with 5:27 left on the clock.
After five straight points by McCollum tied the game at 104, Haliburton drilled his ninth 3-pointer of the game and got a layup to go to give the Pacers the lead back at 107-104.
With a minute left, Haliburton threw a no-look alley-oop to Mathurin for a dunk and the Pacers led 111-108. Indiana then got three straight stops and T.J. McConnell went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line to hold on for the win.
The performance was encouraging for Haliburton, who has experienced and up and down start to the season.
“Feels good to win,” Haliburton said. “At the end of the day, I think that’s all that really matters. My individual performance, and how I view that … if we’re winning, I really don’t care. I think I’ve been frustrated with myself because I feel like the games that we’ve been losing, if I was myself, that we would be winning. I care more about us winning than what my numbers are looking like.”
The loss was the fifth straight for the Pelicans, which currently sit in last place in the Western Conference.
Inside the Numbers
Tyrese Haliburton has recorded seven double-doubles this season.
Haliburton was one point short and one assist short of hitting season-highs in both categories.
All five Pacers starters scored in double figures.
The Pelicans dished out a season-high 35 assists on Monday while the Pacers had 30 dimes as a team.
New Orleans won the rebounding margin 44-41 in the game.
Elfrid Payton’s 21 assists for the Pelicans were a career-high and four short of tying the franchise record of 25 set by Rajon Rondo.
Indiana finished with 13 turnovers to the Pelicans’ 15 giveaways.
You Can Quote Me on That
“There were a lot of good things happening. These were the kinds of games that we really struggled with last year. I’m really just proud of the group, finding a way just to hold it together and figure it out.” – Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle on the win
“I thought that Quenton Jackson hitting those four threes during the game was the difference in the game. It just was. They weren’t guarding him, they were giving him a lot of space, and he just confidently stepped up and knocked those shots in. And then he went back to the other end and he slapped the floor and he played defense. That’s who he is. He’s a find a way guy, he’s not a find an excuse guy. He’s a find a way guy, and he was a big part of this win.” – Carlisle on Quenton Jackson’s performance
“We came in at halftime and just said, ‘look, give the ball energy.’ The more the ball moves, the better shots we get as a team. And just keep our poise. We’re at home. We got our fans on our side … but it’s got to be hard, consistent play. This is not a night to be trying things or get fancy. This is all about the basics.” – Carlisle on the win
“He’s a great dude, man. Ever since we got him last year, he’s just been such a great teammate. Good things happen to good people, honestly … and such a solid person, such a solid teammate. A guy who you want in your corner. Everyone is rooting for him to succeed.” – Tyrese Haliburton on Quenton Jackson
“I think we’re playing way harder defensively, but our energy is just so up and down, and that starts with me. I can make that promise that that will be better moving forward for us as a group, and put that on me because if my energy is good and we’re holding each other accountable, things are going to go well. So it starts with me at the top, and that trickles down to everybody else.” – Haliburton on the season thus far
“ I think it’s easy to look at our schedule and say, ‘Oh, we should win this, we should win that.’ But it’s the league, man. Everybody’s hungry, everybody’s playing hard right now. Y’all can see how jumbled up the East is.” – Myles Turner on not overlooking anyone on the schedule
“I rock with his passion (and) his energy, man. I think he does things the right away. … He worked his way up. Nothing has been handed to him. This position wasn’t handed to him. He is a starter in the NBA now, and it took a lot of work for him to get to that point. I’ve got a lot of love and respect for him, because he’s just a good dude.” – Turner on Jackson
Stat of the Night
Tyrese Haliburton made a season-high nine 3-pointers for the Pacers. He was one 3-pointer short of tying his franchise record of 10 3-pointers made in a game, set against the Miami Heat in 2022.
Noteworthy
Pacers center Myles Turner played in his 586th career game in the Blue & Gold on Monday, passing Billy Knight (585) for sixth most career games with the Pacers all-time.
With 13 dimes on Monday, Tyrese Haliburton passed Chuck Person (1,743) for seventh place in Pacers NBA history for assists. He has 1,744 assists with the Blue & Gold.
Indiana and New Orleans each had eight players listed on Monday’s final injury report, with key players missing from action on both sides. Starters Zion Williamson, Dejounte Murray, Herb Jones and Brandon Ingram were all out for the Pelicans, while Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith and Ben Sheppard remain sidelined for the Pacers.
Indiana is 1-2 on the second legs of back-to-backs this season

INDIANA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
HOOSIERS DEFEATED IN BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – Indiana fell to No. 16/15 UNC in the Battle 4 Atlantis Championship game, 69-39.
KEY MOMENTS
Indiana (4-3) opened play on a 5-0 run before North Carolina (6-1) came back and matched with their own 5-0 run. Scoring was hard to come by for either team as UNC held the slight edge after one, 11-10.
A triple from junior guard Yarden Garzon and a Moore-McNeil floater gave IU the lead with 8:11 to play. The two teams went back-and-forth midway through the frame as UNC pulled ahead on back-to-back 3-pointers. The Tar Heels would finish the afternoon with 11 made triples.
Trailing 32-26 at the break, Indiana couldn’t keep up with falling behind on a 10-2 run at the media timeout.
It was a lead UNC would never relinquish as the Hoosiers mustered up just 13 total points in the second half.
NOTABLE
Garzon and junior forward Shay Ciezki made the Battle 4 Atlantis all-tournament team for their three-game performances.
Sophomore guard Julianna LaMendola made her first career start where she finished with a team and career-high 10 rebounds.
Garzon finished with double figures with 10 points.
Moore-McNeil added eight points and team-high three assists.

PURDUE VOLLEYBALL
COLVIN DRAFTED TO GRAND RAPIDS RISE
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With the seventh overall pick of the Pro Volleyball Federation draft, the Grand Rapids Rise selected middle blocker Raven Colvin.
One of Purdue’s best blockers in program history, Colvin ranks second in Purdue history in career total blocks, block assists and blocks per set and No. 8 in block solos. She is also fourth in the nation among Division I active players in career blocks per set.
The Grand Rapids Rise, which includes Purdue alums Jena Otec (2017-21) and Sherridan Atkinson (2016-18), will begin its season January 10 and runs through May 2, 2025.
Currently, Colvin owns 962 career kills, a .309 career hitting clip (No. 9 in Purdue history), 618 total blocks (79-539), 1.39 blocks per set and 106 career service aces. She is also the Big Ten rally-scoring era record holder for most blocks in a match (16), which she set as a sophomore at Maryland (11/23/22).
This season, the senior out of Indianapolis, Indiana, is the Big Ten blocks leader and ranks fifth in the nation, averaging 1.57 blocks per set. At the top of her collegiate game, she is hitting and blocking more efficiently than ever before, having hit .400% or better in 15 matches, eight at .500% and three at a .700% efficiency or higher. Meanwhile, Colvin has registered 15 matches with at least six blocks and three 10-block performances, including 11 at No. 2 Nebraska.
Colvin will finish out her senior season with the Boilermakers. The team enters its final week of the regular season on the west coast, taking on No. 13 Oregon at 10:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network, followed by a 7:30 p.m. ET showdown at Washington on Big Ten Network. Purdue will find out its postseason fate on the NCAA Selection Show, set for Sunday night at 6 p.m. ET.
PURDUE BASEBALL
BASEBALL HOSTING UCLA, ASU, NOTRE DAME AS PART OF 27-GAME HOME SLATE
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball’s 2025 schedule features 27 home dates at Alexander Field, headlined by games against UCLA, Arizona State and Notre Dame as first-time visitors to the ballpark.
Head coach Greg Goff has unveiled a slate that features six home weekends and a 13-game homestand. The Big Ten Conference schedule has expanded from eight to 10 weekend series (24 to 30 games), meaning five of the Boilermakers’ six home weekends will be conference series.
Purdue hosts Michigan, UCLA, Rutgers, Northwestern and Nebraska for Big Ten series. UIC comes to Alexander Field for the open weekend (March 14-16) in the Big Ten schedule.
The Boilermakers drew Washington for their inaugural Big Ten West Coast road trip, making their first-ever trip to Seattle for the first weekend of April. But the final month of the regular season is very travel friendly. After an Easter Weekend (April 18-20) trip to Penn State, Purdue plays nine of its final 16 games at home. The only road trips during that stretch are to Champaign, Bloomington and Muncie.
Arizona State (April 14), Austin Peay (April 22) and Notre Dame (April 29) all come to Alexander Field for midweek action in the month of April. The ASU game is a Monday matinee that came to be in conjunction with the Sun Devils’ Big 12 Conference road trip to Cincinnati for a game with the Bearcats. Purdue has not hosted Notre Dame since 1997, but the midweek series continues after the teams played in the state of Indiana last season for the first time since 2007.
The Boilermakers play home-and-home midweek dates with both Indiana State and Ball State. They’re scheduled to play 32 of their 56 (57%) regular-season games in the state of Indiana.
Big Ten play opens as early as ever – the weekend of March 7-9. Purdue drew a road series at Minnesota for the first conference weekend, which will be contested inside U.S. Bank Stadium (the home of the Minnesota Vikings). It will mark the Boilers’ second visit to U.S. Bank Stadium after also playing in the Gophers’ six-team Big Ten-ACC Tournament in February 2020. Purdue has not played Minnesota indoors since an April 2009 series inside the Metrodome. The teams also opened the 2011 conference schedule against each other in the Twin Cities, a series that was moved from the Metrodome to Target Field after the dome collapsed due to a blizzard that winter.
The Boilermakers are slated to begin their season at a Triple-A ballpark in Texas for the fifth year in a row, opening at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, again. This year it’s a four-game series vs. first-time foe Stephen F. Austin at the stadium in suburban Houston that serves as the home of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston Astros affiliate).
Purdue plays consecutive weekends in North Carolina for the fourth year in a row. Niagara and Akron are the opponents for weekends No. 2 and 3 as the Boilers return to Ting Stadium in Holly Springs.
Since 2022, Purdue is 10-2 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, 15-4 at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs and 18-5 in the state of North Carolina.
The home opener at Alexander Field is slated for Wednesday, March 12 vs. Butler. It marks the beginning of the season-long 13-homestand. There are also five-game homestands in both April and May.
A full list of gameday promotions and special dates at Alexander Field will be released in early March. Purdue has set attendance records at Alexander each of the last two years.

MCCARTHY EARNS FIRST BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONOR
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue women’s basketball freshman Lana McCarthy has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the first time, the league announced on Monday afternoon
McCarthy was instrumental in guiding Purdue to wins over Bellarmine and UT Arlington at Mackey Arena. The Bedford, N.H., native averaged 15 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two games while shooting 61% from the field. She added a pair of assists and steals with one block.
McCarthy opened the week with her second double-double of the year, going for 12 points and 10 rebounds against Bellarmine. Just four games into her rookie season, McCarthy already matched Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton for the most freshman double-doubles at Purdue since 2004-05.
McCarthy followed up the performance with an 18-point night against UT Arlington, matching her career high. She tacked on five rebounds, one block and a steal. After battling through foul trouble in the first half, she posted 16 points in the second half to help the Boilermakers pull away for the win.
The 6-6 forward is one of nine freshmen nationally and one of two from the Big Ten averaging over 11 points and 7.0 rebounds per game (11.2 PPG, 7.0 RPG). She is tied with Notre Dame’s Kate Koval with the most double-doubles by a freshman against Division I opposition this season.
The Boilermakers will head into the Elevance Fort Myers Tip-Off this week with a game Thursday afternoon against Middle Tennessee at 4:30 p.m., before an 11 a.m. tip against No. 4 South Carolina. Both games can be heard on 95.3 BOB FM or Purdue Stretch Internet with a video stream on the Women’s Sports Network.

NO. 6 IRISH THROTTLE NO. 3 TROJANS TO EARN 74-61 VICTORY
LOS ANGELES — No. 6 Notre Dame faced its first big challenge of the 2024-25 season on Saturday, and it passed with flying colors.
The Irish (5-0) traveled across the country to No. 3 USC (4-1) and never trailed, walking away with a 74-61 win and a major resume builder.
“This is a moment that we are really appreciative to be a part of,” Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Niele Ivey said postgame. “This group is special. I’m so grateful to be able to lead them, and I’m really proud of the way that we’ve been resilient through injuries. For us to come out here and have a complete game and play together, it’s just phenomenal.”
Hannah Hidalgo had the first 6 points for Notre Dame before the Irish went on a mini-run with back-to-back treys by Olivia Miles and Hidalgo. The air attack forced a USC timeout with 4:46 to go in the first frame.
The Irish defense, including Sonia Citron’s stifling attack against All-American JuJu Watkins, continued for the remainder of the quarter. Notre Dame held the Trojans to 10 points in the first 10 minutes, their lowest-scoring frame of the year. Notre Dame also racked up 7 steals.
USC opened up the second quarter with a 9-2 run to force an early Notre Dame timeout, as the Irish led 22-19 with 7:36 left in the half. After the timeout, the Irish rebounded to end the half on a 13-9 run. Hidalgo had 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists at the break. She led or was tied for the lead in those categories, while Liatu King had 5 boards of her own plus a team-leading 4 swipes.
The Irish held the Trojans to 37.5 percent from the floor in the first half, while also forcing USC to go 1-7 from behind the arc.
A strong third quarter from the Trojans, coupled with some foul trouble from the Irish, allowed USC to close the gap to three at 44-41 with 3:41 remaining in the third. The Irish offense went cold from the floor for more than 5 minutes, as they didn’t score between 7:35 and 2:08.
With both squads putting up 17 points in the third quarter, it was a 52-45 ballgame heading into the fourth. The Irish came out hot in the final quarter, going on a 14-2 run to put Notre Dame up 66-47. USC worked to close the gap, but Notre Dame outscored the Trojans 22-16 in the fourth with 8 points poured in from Miles, who went a perfect 3-3 from the floor in the final quarter.
Highlights at No. 3 Southern Cal | Notre Dame Women’s Basketball
Hidalgo was the leading scorer at the buzzer with 24, and Miles had 20. King reached double-digit rebounds with 11, and Hidalgo had 8 assists. Miles had 7 and 20 points, passing the 1000-point mark in her career.
Watkins finished with 24 points, but the box score doesn’t show the full story. Citron didn’t let her get anything easy, and she fought for every point she had.
“Soni had the tall task of guarding one of the best players in the country in [Watkins],” Ivey said. “I thought she did a great job trying to deny her for the entire game.
“Everybody knows Soni for her offense, but now you know how great of a defender she is.”
Notre Dame will head back to South Bend for a couple of days before traveling to the Cayman Islands to play TCU and Utah over the Thanksgiving holiday.
HIDALGO NAMED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AFTER EYE-POPPING PERFORMANCE AT USC
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the second consecutive week, Hannah Hidalgo is your ACC Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. It is the fifth time in her career Hidalgo has earned the honor.
The 5-6 guard from Merchantville, N.J., put on a show at No. 3 USC on Saturday, dropping 24 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. She has put up 20+ points in 30 of her 40 collegiate games and now has 10 career games with at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals, which is more than any other Division I player in the last 25 years.
“Big time player, big time stage,” Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Niele Ivey said of Hidalgo after Saturday’s victory. “I’m not at all shocked by what she did today. From the beginning, she guarded everyone on the court. She’s so feisty and energetic. It’s contagious for our group.”
Saturday’s performance added to an already lengthy resume for Hidalgo against ranked teams. Over her career against AP Top 25 opponents, the guard has averaged 21.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.3 steals per game.
On the season, Hidalgo leads the nation with 5.2 steals per game and ranks third with 24.8 points per game. She is shooting 48.9 percent from the floor and has made 43 field goals (24th in the country) and 28 free throws (35th in the country).
Hidalgo and the Irish will be back in action this week at the Cayman Islands Classic, as Notre Dame plays No. 17 TCU (6-0) on Friday and Utah (5-1) on Saturday. The games can be streamed on FloHoops.com.

A PLAYERS ERA FILLED WITH NEW OPPORTUNITIES
LAS VEGAS – What an opportunity for the Notre Dame men’s basketball team this Thanksgiving week, both on the court and in NIL opportunities. The Players Era Festival – its first of its kind – debuts on Tuesday with plenty of hoops for fans to feast on. Eight teams have been separated into two groups of four. The Fighting Irish will compete in the Impact Division with a Tuesday night game against Rutgers, followed by a late Wednesday (Thanksgiving morning for those in Eastern Time) matchup against top-10 Houston squad. Saturday’s opponent is TBD and will be based on group-play results.
The Fighting Irish (4-1) and Scarlet Knights (4-1) will tip off at 10:30 p.m. ET on TBS on Nov. 26. Both teams are coming into Las Vegas looking to avenge their respective first losses of the season. Rutgers was ranked 24th in the A.P. Poll but just slid out after the Kennesaw State upset this past Sunday afternoon.
Notre Dame leads the overall series with Rutgers, 21-13, with a 6-2 record on neutral courts. The last meeting between the two was a memorable one – an 89-87 double-overtime victory at the First Four round in Dayton to propel the Irish into the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
Next, Notre Dame and Houston are tied 4-4 in the overall series. The two haven’t clashed on the hardwood since Feb. 10, 1990. The Cougars are 3-1 on the year and ranked sixth in the country in the latest AP Poll.
Now, the last time the Irish earned a top-10 neutral site victory – it was against No. 6 Wichita State to win the Maui Invitational in 2017.
Following Wednesday’s games, each group will be ranked first through fourth, and after head-to-head record, seeding will be determined by total point differential in group games (capped at 20 points per game), then total points scored and fewest points allowed. The top seeds from each division will face off in the championship game, with the rest of the standings filling out the third, fifth and seventh-place matchups.

BURTON HEATING UP
Burton enters the Vegas tournament on back-to-back games with 20+ points. In fact, he totaled 54 points last week on a combined 23-for-38 shooting aka 60.5 percent. He went 6-for-11 from deep, including a career-best four made triples against Elon.
In Notre Dame’s 75-58 victory over North Dakota, Burton was a bucket shy of a career-high and rebound shy of his first career double-double. Burton dropped 29 points and also tied his career-high in rebounds with nine.
He’s currently the only player in the country averaging 20+ points, 5+ assists, and 5+ rebounds. His 21.4 ppg rank 19th nationally and second in the ACC.
NOT LAST YEAR’S OFFENSE
Despite the Elon hiccup, it’s quite evident that this is not last year’s offense, and the player development/offensive progression is there. Case in point, Notre Dame has now scored 75+ points in each of its first five games for the first time since the start of the 2009-10 season. .
The Irish are shooting 51.9 percent from the field which ranks 14th nationally and leads the ACC. They are also shooting a hot 61.0 percent from two, which ranks 17th in the country.
Diving deeper – Notre Dame is one of the best mid-range jump-shooting teams in the country. They are converting 62.9 percent from the mid-range which ranks fourth nationally.
CBB Analytics has Notre Dame’s offensive rating at 122.3 which ranks 34th in the nation. KenPom’s offensive efficiency ranking puts the Irish at No. 51.
BRAEDEN’S OFFENSIVE GAME
We know what Breaden is capable from three. Last season, he drained 55 three-pointers in conference play which set a new program record for ACC threes. This season, he’s averaging a team-best 2.4 made threes per game. He’s shooting a hot 54.5 percent in corner threes and 37.5 percent overall from deep.
But Braeden has been attacking the basket and driving more in year two. He’s shooting 68.2 percent from two-point range. Thus, he’s shooting 50.0 percent from the field overall. Lastly, his 14.8 ppg ranks second behind Burton.
TAE-KING OVER
Tae Davis is the third and final Irish averaging double figures at 12.4 ppg. He’s shooting 56.7 percent from two, including 65.0 percent at the rim.
In the Buffalo victory, he poured in a career-high 27 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Plus he drained a career-best 12-of-13 from the ree-throw line. Davis got it done in crunch time as well, scoring 13 of Notre Dame’s final 15 points. He followed that up with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the Georgetown road win. He grabbed a team-high eight boards.
Tae’s numbers are also up due to his yearly improvement from the free-throw line. This year he’s shooting 84.6 percent (22-26). A season ago Tae was 72.3 percent from the stripe.
BUTLER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
STRANDE SHINES IN BUTLER’S 69-44 WIN OVER UMASS LOWELL
Caroline Strande scored a game-high 26 points in Butler’s 69-44 victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldog victory moves the team’s overall record to 5-1 heading into Thanksgiving.
Strande scored her 26 points in 25 minutes on 9-for-14 shooting. She made four of her six 3-point attempts and added seven rebounds in the outcome.
Strande was one of three Bulldogs to score in double figures. Kilyn McGuff posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Riley Makalusky also had a solid all-around game with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Butler and UMass Lowell were tied at 12-12 after the first quarter, but the Bulldogs would end the first half on an 8-0 scoring run to take a 31-23 lead into halftime.
BU outscored the River Hawks by five in the third quarter and blew the game open in the fourth with 23 points over the final 10 minutes.
The Bulldogs scored 40 points in the paint and came up with 24 points on 16 UMass Lowell turnovers. Kilyn McGuff led the defensive charge with four steals and Lily Carmody added two allowing BU to record 10 as a team.
Cristen Carter also patrolled the paint for BU by blocking three shots. Carter had eight points and five rebounds. She only missed one shot on Sunday.
Butler’s next game will come in the 2024 Gulf Coast Showcase against Santa Clara. Opening tip in Bonita Springs, Fla. is set for 5 p.m.

JAGUARS WIN AT ALABAMA A&M BEHIND ZILINSKAS’ 32
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team captured a key road victory on Monday (Nov. 25) as the Jaguars outlasted Alabama A&M, 88-83 inside the AAMU Events Center. Graduate transfer Paul Zilinskas tallied a career-high 32 points to pace four Jaguars in double-digits and Jarvis Walker pumped in 13, including the dagger on the Jags’ final offensive possession. The game featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes with the Jaguars seizing the final advantage of the day with 1:13 to play.
Zilinskas scored 20 of his 32 in the second half while Walker tallied 12 of his 13 after intermission.
The Jags trailed by as many as nine in the second half, but rallied back and took a 75-72 lead when Nathan Dudukovich stroked an open trey with 3:48 to play. Later, Zilinskas got free for an open wing three with 1:58 remaining to give the Jags an 80-78 lead. AAMU (4-4) tied the game at the free throw line, but Walker fired back with a pair of free throws with 1:13 to play. After Alabama A&M cut the lead in half by splitting a pair of freebies with 59.9 seconds to play, Zilinskas responded with a three-point play on a tough drive to his left with 40 seconds left. AAMU’s Darius Ford responded with a tough finish with 32.9 seconds to play, but the host Bulldogs opted to play it out, rather than foul.
Zilinskas dribbled out the bulk of the clock before a reversal found its way to Walker, who drained a three as the shot clock expired, effectively ending the game.
Zilinskas hit 11-of-20 shots, including 5-of-10 from three, and all five of his free throw attempts. The Jags shot 55.2 percent after the break to finish the game at 42.1 percent after a sluggish first half. More importantly, the Jags connected on 12-of-28 (42.9 percent) from three and 28-of-32 (87.5 percent) at the foul line as the two teams combined on 49 fouls and 65 free throw attempts. Timaris Brown came off the bench with a key 11-point, eight rebound effort before fouling out and Sean Craig had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Ford led AAMU with 20 points and AC Bryant tallied 17 points, including hitting 10-of-11 at the free throw line. Chad Moodie finished with 16 points and three blocked shots up front for the hosts.
The first half was similarly a slugfest with the Jags shooting just 29 percent overall, but hitting 12-of-15 at the free throw line. The Jags built a 32-25 first half lead with 4:45 to play when Zilinskas rattled in a three off Craig’s assist from the seat of his pants. However, AAMU closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 33-32 halftime advantage.
The Jaguars will return home to host Trinity Christian after the Thanksgiving holiday on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2:00 p.m. inside the Jungle. Fans can purchase tickets by clicking here and are encouraged to purchase and download tickets before arrival as the department is exclusively digital tickets this season.

SPARKS’ GAME-WINNING AND-1 IN FINAL SECONDS LEADS CARDINALS TO 63-61 WIN OVER EKU
ESTERO, Fla. – The Ball State men’s basketball team got a go-ahead and-1 from Payton Sparks with 15 seconds to play to top Eastern Kentucky 63-61 on Monday afternoon at the Gulf Coast Showcase at Hertz Arena.
The Cardinals trailed 61-57 before Mickey Pearson Jr. drained a 3-pointer from the right corner at the 1:07 mark of the second half to pull Ball State within a point. Sparks later made the left-handed layup and hit the free throw to provide for the game’s final score. Jermahri Hill secured a closing rebound in the final second after the Cardinals forced an EKU miss.
Ball State (2-4) led much of the first half before the Colonels (3-2) went on a 9-0 rally late in the opening period to take a 36-29 lead into halftime. The Cardinals scored the first seven points of the second half to knot the score at 36-all, and a later 9-0 Ball State scoring run put the Cards ahead 47-43 with 12:25 left to play.
Hill went for a team-best 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Sparks (12 points, four rebounds, two assists) and Pearson Jr. (11 points, five rebounds) also scored in double-figures for Ball State. Juanse Gorosito hit a trio of triples for nine points and tallied three steals. Ethan Brittain-Watts (five points), Jeremiah Hernandez (four) and TJ Burch (four) also made important offensive contributions in a tight contest.
There were 11 ties and 13 lead changes in the back-and-forth affair. Ball State outshot Eastern Kentucky, going 48.9 percent (22-45) from the field including 35.3 percent (6-17) on 3-pointers while making 68.4 percent (13-19) of its free throws. The Colonels were limited to 31.1 percent (19-61) on field goals, 25 percent (6-24) from distance and 65.4 percent (17-26) on foul shots.
Eastern Kentucky had advantages in rebounding (41-31) and turnovers (18-12) and got 23 points and 11 rebounds from Devontae Blanton, but the almost 18-point spread in field goal shooting percentage put the Cardinals over the top in the opening tilt of the showcase, which features three games in three days for six teams.
Ball State controlled the interior to the tune of a 30-20 edge on points in the paint.
Next up for the Cardinals is a game with Florida Tech at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Hertz Arena.

KIEFER BECOMES WBB’S ALL-TIME BLOCKS LEADER IN LOSS TO COLUMBIA
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – The Ball State women’s basketball team (5-2) lost a hard-fought battle in their last game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament when the Cardinals fell 69-62 to Columbia University (6-2) Monday night in Imperial Arena.
In the second quarter, senior Marie Kiefer became Ball State women’s basketball’s all-time blocks leader with 153 total blocks passing former Carinal Tamara Bowie who owned the record of 152 since 2003.
From start-to-finish the game was a tight affair as both teams went back-and-forth up until the 1:47 mark in the second quarter. After that, the Cardinals began to pull away from the Lions. Elise Stuck, Maliyah “MJ” Johnson and Madelyn Bischoff made an impact during the Cardinals 9-4 run. The run allowed Ball State to take a 31-25 lead over Columbia University at intermission.
The momentum switched hands to Columbia in the third stanza as the Lions outscored the Cardinals 25-14 to take a 50-45 advantage over Ball State into the final 10 minutes of play.
Columbia carried that strong presence into the remainder of the contest eventually building an 11-point cushion 58-45 over Ball State at the 7:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
Ball State began to make a comeback with baskets from Kiefer along with a jumper from Lachelle Austin with 2:18 left on the clock. That scoring spree brought the Cardinals to within five (63-58) which forced Columbia to call a timeout. But despite the Cardinals efforts, the Lions remained atop the rest of the contest.
Tonight’s game saw five Cardinals reach double-digit scoring which was led by Austin who had 15. Bischoff tallied 13 points while Kiefer finished the night with 12. Stuck and Ally Becki rounded out the double figure scoring after registering 10 points apiece. Defensively, both Kiefer and Austin had seven rebounds, respectively.

INDIANA STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL
INDIANA STATE DROPS MONDAY NIGHT CONTEST AT SOUTHERN INDIANA
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Indiana State men’s basketball fell on Monday night at Southern Indiana, 87-77, moving to 3-3 on the season.
A slow start to the game for the Sycamores proved costly, getting down 8-0 through two-and-a-half minutes of play and the Sycamores never found the lead. Jahni Summers made the Sycamores first six points of the game to help Indiana State fight back to trail 11-9 with 12:51 on the clock.
A layup by Aaron Gray and two-straight layups by Markus Harding kept the Sycamores within three points before Southern Indiana made some separation for its first double-digit lead of the game, 26-15, with 7:45 remaining in the half. USI held that lead, give or take a couple points, through the remainder of the half.
Through the first half, Indiana State turned the ball over 15 times leading to 17 USI points. Those 17 points in addition to eight points from the free throw line from the Screaming Eagles gave USI the 11-point halftime advantage.

The Sycamores and Screaming Eagles stayed tight through the next four minutes, going back-and-forth on buckets but Indiana State held the 13-10 advantage in the run. The Sycamores ended that run cutting the lead down to two points, 53-51, with 12:54 to play. Six different Sycamores contributed, and the team made 5-of-6 from the floor and converted all three free throw attempts.
Southern Indiana used a 15-7 run, making 6-of-7 to pull away from the Sycamores just enough to lead by 10, 68-58, with 7:14 on the clock.
The Sycamores didn’t count themselves out yet, as in the next three minutes Indiana State brought the game within four points with the help of Samage Teel scoring 5-of-9 in a 9-3 Sycamore advantage. Gray scored on a layup assisted by Teel, and Doughty drained a pair from the line to add to the effort.
Teel and Harding combined to score the final 10 points of the game for Indiana State in the last four minutes, but USI finished perfect from the floor (4-for-4) and 6-for-8 from the free throw line to capture the 10-point, 87-77 victory over Indiana State.
Samage Teel led the game with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting, recording six rebounds, four assists, and a block. Teel led the game with five steals. ELIJAH OWENS NAMED JERRY RICE AWARD FINALIST
STATS PERFORM – Indiana State redshirt freshman quarterback Elijah Owens was named a Jerry Rice Award Finalist as announced by Stats Perform on Monday afternoon.
Owens becomes the second Sycamore over the last three seasons to be named a finalist for the annual award which honors the national freshman player of the year in college football’s Division I FCS subdivision. Former Sycamore Cade Chambers was also named a finalist back in the 2022 season.
Owens was Indiana State’s leading passer and rusher over the course of the 2024 season after taking the starting role heading into the year. He was also named one of the Sycamores’ captains prior to the season as voted on by his peers.
The Jacksonville, Ill. native finished among the national leaders in completion percentage (68.8%) going 181-for-263 for 1,717 yards and 12 passing touchdowns. He finished fifth overall in the MVFC in total offense per game (222.88) and second overall in the league in total offensive plays (318).
Owens’ prowess through the air was nearly matched on the ground as the signal caller set new Indiana State quarterback rushing records in 2024. Owens’ 645 rushing yards set a new Sycamore record breaking the mark set by Ryan Boyle (610) back in the 2018 season. His eight rushing touchdowns also broke the Indiana State mark set by Jeff Miller (7) back in both the 1983 and 1984 seasons.
He posted three 200-yard passing games and three 100-yard rushing games in the 2024 season. Among the seasonal highlights included a 30-of-37 game with 260 passing yards and three touchdowns against Eastern Illinois. He added 168 passing yards, 107 rushing yards, and three combined touchdowns in the season finale against Northern Iowa.
To be eligible for the Jerry Rice Award, a player must be considered a freshman by his conference in his first academic year or second if he did not surpass four regular-season games played in the true freshman season (the NCAA redshirt rule). More players can join the watch list before a national media panel selects the winner following the regular season.
The 2024 Jerry Rice Award recipient will be announced on Dec. 4 and honored at the Stats Perform National Awards Banquet on Jan. 4 in Frisco, Texas. Other awards at the banquet are the Walter Payton Award (FCS Offensive Player of the Year), Buck Buchanan Award (FCS Defensive Player of the Year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS Coach of the Year), Urban Edge Network HBCU+ Player of the Year and FedEx Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

VALPO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HANDLES GOSHEN MONDAY EVENING
The Valpo women’s basketball team took to the court for the last time before Thanksgiving Monday evening at the ARC, jumping out to a 20-point halftime lead on its way to a 72-41 victory over Goshen.
How It Happened
After a quick start for the Beacons, Goshen put together a run and led 13-8 just past the midway point of the opening quarter.
Valpo turned things around with a 15-2 run to close the period with a 23-15 lead. Fifth-year Leah Earnest (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) scored five points during that run, while senior Katie Beyer (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) and sophomore Nevaeh Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) contributed a pair of baskets apiece.
Valpo’s defense didn’t surrender a field goal until the final minute of the second quarter, holding the Maple Leafs to 1-of-11 shooting in the period. The lead reached as many as 22 points before the Beacons took a 43-23 lead into the locker room.
Goshen cut Valpo’s edge to 15 points at one point in the third quarter, but the Beacons were able to extend back out to a 58-36 lead with 10 minutes to play.
In a fourth quarter played entirely by Beacon reserves, Valpo limited Goshen to just five points over the final 10 minutes of action.

SIBILA’S LINEMAN OF THE YEAR HONOR HEADLINES MARIAN’S MSFA MIDWEST ALL-LEAGUE HAUL
INDIANAPOLIS – After finishing the 2024 season with an 8-2 record and a share of the MSFA Midwest League Championship, the Marian football team was recognized by the Mid-States Association with 18 All-League honors. Marian’s 18 honors were the second most in the league, with Zach Sibila taking the Knights’ highest honor, as the fifth-year senior was named as the Offensive Lineman of the Year for the second time in his career.
The Knights claimed a league-high nine spots on the First Team, with five coming on the offensive side, three on the defensive, and one specialist.
Marian had five first team All-MSFA Midwest League honors from the offensive side of the ball, and were led by three offensive linemen in Zach Sibila, Austin Jones, and Razhaun Wells. Sibila was named the MSFA Midwest League Offensive Lineman of the Year, playing both right tackle and right guard this season. Sibila, Jones, and Well, anchored a unit as the only players to start all 10 of Marian’s games, while additionally leading a group that allowed 13 sacks throughout the season. The line also paved the way for a running game that averaged 166.5 yards per game on the ground and a passing game that averaged just under 230 yards per game.
Sibila and Jones both end their careers on the offensive line with 50 consecutive starts. Sibila was a four-time First Team All-League honoree, and Jones’ honor in the 2024 season was the third of his career. Wells earned All-League honors for the first time in his career.
Keagan La Belle followed the offensive line and was named as a First Team running back, ending the season with 1165 yards on the ground and 17 touchdowns. La Belle finished top-three in the MSFA Midwest in rushing touchdowns, and was second in single season history at Marian. The junior back averaged 126.8 all-purpose yards per game, and finished the regular season ranked in the top-10 in the NAIA in yards, carries, touchdowns, and yard per game. La Belle’s First Team MSFA Midwest honor is his second career First Team All-League award.
Jake Reichard had a breakout season as a starting receiving, putting up career-high stats in his fourth year in the program, leading to a First Team honor. Reichard finished as the team’s leading receiver with 1012 yards on 55 catches, and averaged 5.5 receptions per game. The wideout ranked 11th in the NAIA in yards, and had seven total touchdowns on the season, catching six while passing for one. Reichard’s honor is the first of his career.
Defensively, Marian had three All-MSFA Midwest League First Team honors, with Isaiah Street, Dwight Lewis III, and Jayshawn Underwood taking the honor. Street was Marian’s leader in sacks and tackles for loss with 9.0 and 13.5, respectively, and earned First Team honors in his first season as a Knight. The defensive end finished the regular season ranked ninth in the NAIA in sacks.
Dwight Lewis III earned his second First Team honor of his career, as the cornerback was tied for the team lead with four interceptions. Lewis made 25 tackles on the season, and blocked one kick in addition to scoring a touchdown on an interception return.
Jayshawn Underwood earned First Team honors for the first time in his career, as the three-time All-MSFA honoree finished fourth on the team in tackles with 51. Underwood was also tied for the team-lead in interceptions with four, splitting time between the slot corner and safety positions.
Completing Marian’s First Team MSFA honors was Mason Miller, who was voted as the top punter in the league. Miller led the NAIA in the regular season in punting with an average of 45.3 yards, setting a single-season record at Marian University. Miller had 19 punts land inside the 20 yard line, and had 13 punts travel over 50 yards. The honor for Miller is the second of his career, after being named to the second team a season ago.
Drew Byerly was Marian’s lone recipient of an offensive Second Team honor, as the fifth-year tight end recorded 19 catches on the season with 165 yards. Byerly helped the run game as a lead blocker, and averaged 24 yards per game receiving. The tight end finishes his career as a three-time All-MSFA honoree.
The Knights defense had four honorees on the MSFA Second Team, with Deon Pettiford, Jesse Stevens, Cade Houseman, and JT Downey each earning the honor. Pettiford ended the season with 3.5 sacks and a blocked kick, while also recording two interceptions before his mid-season position switch of linebacker to defensive end. Pettiford ends his Marian career as a three-time All-MSFA honoree after his award this season. Stevens had 20 tackles in his first season at Marian, and recorded five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in nine games on the defensive line, claiming his first career MSFA Second Team honor.
Houseman too went through a position change during the season, earning his first career All-MSFA honor as a Second Team linebacker. Houseman started the year as a safety, and finished as a starting backer and the team’s leading tackler with 79 total tackles. Houseman made 17 tackles in the season finale, and on the season had 10 stops in the backfield and 2.5 sacks. JT Downey was a top-five tackler for the Knights in 2024, as the safety earned MSFA Second Team honors following his 49 tackle and two interception year. The safety also forced and recovered a fumble in his first all-league season.
Rounding out Marian’s honors this season were three honorable mention awards, with Wyatt Woodall, Logan Carrington, and Tirae Spence landing on the MSFA Honorable Mention Team. Wyatt Woodall was the second-leading tackler for Marian, making 67 starts as the freshman started all 10 games as the middle linebacker. Woodall made 4.5 sacks on the season, and recorded 11 tackles for loss. Logan Carrington finished the season as a starting safety, and like Lewis and Underwood, was the team-leader in interceptions with four on the season. Carrington made 45 tackles on the year, and added a fumble recovery to his interception totals. Tirae Spence ended his career with his second All-MSFA honor, finishing the season as the team’s second-leading receiver. Spence made 23 catches on the year for 385 yards, scoring four touchdowns on the season.
