NICK TAYLOR PREVAILS IN SONY OPEN PLAYOFF FOR FIFTH PGA TOUR WIN
Canada’s Nick Taylor knocked in a birdie putt from less than 3 feet away on the second playoff hole to win the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Taylor, who had a dramatic eagle to conclude the final round, secured his fifth PGA Tour victory after matching Colombia’s Nico Echavarria with 16-under-par 264s. They both turned in 5-under 65s in the final round.
Taylor and Echavarria were forced to repeat the par-5 No. 18 after they both birdied it on the first extra hole. Taylor made a 10-foot putt and Echavarria followed by draining a 5 1/2-footer. On the second playthrough, Echavarria missed an 8 1/2-footer for birdie to set up Taylor for the win.
Three of Taylor’s victories on tour have come in playoffs.
Echavarria, 30, was trying to post a PGA Tour victory for the third consecutive year.
Taylor’s chip-in from the fringe for an eagle 3 on No. 18 catapulted him into contention before waiting for others to finish to see if it held up.
That put him 6 under for the final 11 holes of regulation. It also was redemption after he missed back-to-back birdie putts for less than 5 feet away on the back side.
Echavarria recovered after bogeys on his first two holes. He had birdies on Nos. 16 and 18.
Third-round leader J.J. Spaun (68) and Germany’s Stephan Jaeger (67) shared third place at 15 under. They were in the final grouping and had chances to join the leaders, but both finished with pars.
Spaun, seeking his second victory on the PGA Tour, went to the par-3 17th hole with the lead, but he bogeyed there. By the time he reached the 18th tee, he had fallen behind Taylor and Echavarria.
Spaun played the first eight holes in 3 under and then recorded eight consecutive pars before the misstep on No. 17.
Jaeger stayed in contention despite a lost tee shot on No. 16. He pulled off a bogey on the hole.
Eric Cole (68) birdied the final hole to finish alone in fifth place at 14 under. There was a four-way tie for sixth place at 13 under with Jackson Suber (65), Adam Schenk (65), Patrick Fishburn (69) and Keegan Bradley (68).

INDIANA PACERS
GAME REWIND: PACERS 108, CAVALIERS 93
The Pacers took on the Cavaliers in a single-game road trip on Sunday evening as they sought to defeat one of the NBA’s top teams. Hot on a 5-game winning streak, Indiana was poised to challenge the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 club as they opened the regular season series with Cleveland in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. After trailing the Cavaliers by 13 points at halftime, the Pacers fought all the way back to defeat Cleveland, 108-93.
The win marks an Indiana Pacers franchise record sixth consecutive win by double figures.
Cleveland opened the contest with a devastating run – 10 unanswered points that forced an early Indiana timeout. The double-digit deficit just over two minutes into the game marked the first time the Pacers have trailed by double figures in seven games.
Indiana rallied as the first quarter progressed, starting with a Myles Turner 3-pointer coming out of the early timeout. Turner’s first quarter offense kept the Pacers afloat as they weathered the Cavaliers’ offensive storm.
After facing a 10-point deficit just two minutes into the contest, the Pacers allowed the Cavaliers to score just nine points over the remaining 10 minutes of the first quarter. Indiana used a 21-9 run to capture the lead before the buzzer, and led by two points at the end of the first frame, 21-19.
The Cavaliers surged in the second quarter as their defensive intensity grew, and Indiana couldn’t find the bottom of the net. The Pacers shot just 16.7% from 3-point range in the first half while Cleveland shot 37.5%. The Cavaliers used a 10-2 run through the middle of the second quarter to recapture the lead at halftime, 53-40. They outscored the Pacers 34-19 in the second frame, leading to the 13-point halftime gap.
With Tyrese Haliburton sidelined for the remainder of the contest due to left hamstring tightness, the Pacers opened the second half with the ball in Andrew Nembhard’s hands. Ben Sheppard filled the open slot in Indiana’s starting lineup.
A 9-0 run in the middle of the third quarter cut the Cleveland lead to six and forced Cavalier’s coach Kenny Atkinson to call a timeout. Siakam stole a Cavalier’s inbounds pass out of the timeout and converted a layup to push the run to 11-0. The run would stretch all the way to 13 unanswered Pacers points before Jarrett Allen’s free throws with nearly six minutes remaining in the quarter broke the streak.
Indiana used what became a 20-5 run through the third quarter to tie the game at 65 points with 3:38 left in the frame. An up-and-under reverse layup from TJ McConnell gave the Pacers the lead, and following a steal on the defensive end, an Obi Toppin 3-pointer extended it.
“We picked up our level of aggression and force in the second half, and we were really tied together,” Carlisle said postgame. “…Our calling card has got to be our aggression and our depth, and in the second half, we played the way we needed to play to be competitive in a game like this.”
The Blue and Gold’s cascade of offense started with attention to detail on the defensive end – the Pacers forced seven Cleveland turnovers in the third quarter, and scored 15 fastbreak points off those turnovers. Ten-point quarters from Toppin and Bennedict Mathurin helped Indiana outscore the Cavaliers 37-18 in the third quarter, and they carried a six point lead into the fourth, 77-71.
The Pacers led by as many as 17 points with four minutes to play when Cleveland made a push that brought it within 13 points of the lead. Nembhard exploded late in the fourth quarter as he drained two deep 3-pointers on his way to an 11-point quarter to close the game. He finished with 19 points overall, leading the Pacers in scoring. Darius Garland’s 20 points and seven assists led Cleveland.
It was a tale of two halves for Indiana – the Pacers shot 33% from the field in the first half and 61% in the second. Cleveland connected on just 28% of its shots in the second half after draining 50% of them in the first half, and committed 13 total turnovers. The Pacers committed 10 of their own, but scored 20 points off of Cavalier turnovers and won the rebounding battle, 50-44.
Jarace Walker set a new career high for rebounds as he grabbed 12 for Indiana in the victory. Walker finished with eight points and was a game-high +21 off Indiana’s bench. His play was crucial to Indiana’s win over the Cavaliers, who were previously 20-1 in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
Cleveland also owns the NBA’s best offensive rating at 121.9, and Indiana is the first team this season to hold the Cavaliers under 100 points.
The Pacers will return to Indianapolis for a rematch with the Cavaliers on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7:00 PM ET in Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Inside the Numbers
After scoring just 40 points in the first half, Indiana notched 68 in the second.

You Can Quote Me on That
“Our connectivity in the second half was as good as it’s been all year. And it has to be against a team of this level, and in a building with this kind of atmosphere. It’s very, very difficult to play here.” – Carlisle on second half comeback
“This was Jarace’s best game of the year. Best game since he’s been a Pacer. We’ve been talking to him about compete level consistency, attention to detail, [and] physicality, and he showed all those things tonight. He was very consistent, and his contribution to this game was massive.” – Carlisle on Jarace Walker
“He knows how to control the game offensively and everybody knows him defensively, it’s no secret [he’s] one of the best defenders in the league.” – Obi Toppin on Andrew Nembhard
“I’m just trying to have the ball popping, moving. It’s not just about me, it’s about playing as a group, honestly. I think we did a great job playing as a group.” – Andrew Nembhard on team dynamic
“I feel like I was very impactful on both sides of the ball. There’s always more I could do, but in terms of my effort and energy, I felt like it was really high tonight.” – Jarace Walker on playing with energy

INDY FUEL
FUEL GIVE UP TWO TO IOWA ON SUNDAY
CORALVILLE- The Fuel ended their week in Iowa with a Sunday afternoon game where they ultimately fell 2-1 to the Heartlanders after a hard fought third period.
1ST PERIOD
Unlike in their meeting last night, the first half of the first period moved very slowly on both sides of the ice. Each team recorded three shots to start the period and that was it.
At 10:51, Ryan Miotto scored quickly off the draw to make it 1-0 in favor of Iowa.
About a minute later, Iowa’s Dakota Raabe took a cross checking penalty that gave the Fuel a power play chance, however the Heartlanders killed it off.
Colin Bilek took back-to-back penalties late in the period for slashing and tripping but the Fuel did not allow a goal.
At 19:33, Indy took a too many men penalty which was served by Bennett Stockdale and lasted into the second period.
Through one frame, shots were tied 9-9.
2ND PERIOD
As the halfway point of the game approached, Chris Cameron and Nico Blachman, who have met to drop the gloves before, did so again. Each was given five minutes for fighting.
At 11:06, Iowa’s Boscq took a hooking call giving the Fuel a power play but it was the Heartlanders who scored next.
While shorthanded, Yuki Miura made it 2-0 in favor of Iowa.
Kevin Lombardi broke the shutout with a goal at 14:42. Cam Hausinger and Kyle Maksimovich claimed the assists on that goal.
Maksimovich took a slashing penalty at 19:34, giving Iowa another power play that would last into the third frame.
Through two, Indy was outshooting Iowa 18-15.
3RD PERIOD
Ty Farmer got on the game sheet first in the third period with a slashing penalty at 8:14 to put the Fuel on the penalty kill again.
Indy killed off that penalty and then went a long stretch without much else happening. Ben Gaudreau kept Indy in it as the Heartlanders continued putting pressure on.
At 15:51, Blachman was ejected with a ten minute misconduct penalty for inciting. Less than a minute later, Indy’s Nick Grima took a holding call putting the Fuel back on the penalty kill.
This was complicated further when Iowa’s Will Calverley took a roughing penalty at 18:29, leaving Indy with some power play time at the end of regulation.
After pulling Gaudreau from net, Indy had substantial time with two extra attackers but they could not even the score before time expired. Iowa took the 2-1 win on Sunday night.
INDIANA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
GARZON’S HOT SHOOTING LEADS INDIANA PAST IOWA, 74-67
KEY MOMENTS
The Hoosiers (12-4, 4-1 B1G) opened the game on a 6-0 start while Garzon piled on a pair of 3-pointers to put her team up 14-7 at the media timeout. They forced the Hawkeyes (12-5, 2-4 B1G) into six turnovers in the first as Indiana ed 18-13 after one.
In the second, IU jumped on a lengthy scoring drought from Iowa as it built as many as a 15-point edge with Garzon draining her third 3-pointer and junior guard Lexus Bargesser found graduate student guard Sydney Parrish cutting to the rim with 3:46 remaining. But Iowa pushed back as the Hoosiers scored just one bucket the rest of the frame and held on to a 36-30 halftime advantage.
Iowa came out in the third to make it a one-possession game and came within as few as two early in the quarter. Parrish and Garzon drained back-to-back threes with 4:39 remaining to go up 10, 49-39. Parrish’s three was part of her 11 points in the third quarter where the Hoosiers shot 53.3 percent.
Taking that 10 point lead into the fourth, Indiana once again raised its lead to 15. The Hawkeyes took advantage, however, on a seven-and-a-half minute scoring drought by IU. Senior forward Karoline Striplin stepped up with a big time shot with 1:28 remaining pushing the lead up to six.
NOTABLE
Garzon led the way with 21 points, finishing a point shy of her season high. It’s the 14th double figure scoring game for her this season and 14th time she’s made multiple 3-pointers.

Indiana dished out 18 assists led by a career-high six from Striplin. Moore-McNeil and Garzon had four each.
Striplin also led the Hoosiers with six rebounds.

PURDUE WRESTLING
#25 BOILERMAKERS DOWN HUSKIES IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE DUAL
DeKALB, Ill. – No. 25 Purdue Wrestling beat Northern Illinois 29-8 in the final non-conference dual of the season on Sunday afternoon at NIU Convocation Center.
With three of the team’s seven ranked wrestlers out of the lineup, the Boilermakers (8-1, 1-0 B1G) prevailed with four bonus point victories.
At 8-1, Purdue is off to its best start since the 2019-20 season.
Orlando Cruz put forth his strongest showing yet, defeating Jake Evans 21-5 (6:45) for a technical fall. His explosion for 21 points tied the highest mark by any Boilermaker all season, which No. 26 Brody Baumann first reached at Kent State on Jan. 3.
Filling in at 157 lbs in place of No. 20 James Rowley, Cruz has shined in his redshirt-freshman season. He’s earned three straight dual victories including back-to-back tech falls.
In the only ranked bout of the afternoon, No. 1 Matt Ramos was challenged by No. 21 Blake West, earning a 5-4 decision in his closest match of the season. Ultimately, he improved to 6-0 in ranked matchups on the year.
The top-ranked star built up a 5-1 lead entering the final frame, but West wouldn’t relent until the final buzzer.
Going on the attack, West benefited from a stalling penalty and a riding time point, but Ramos’ defense was too stingy to overcome.
The Lockport, Illinois, powerhouse has still not given up a takedown or a single back point all season.
Along with Cruz, the trio of Baumann, Isaac Ruble and Ben Vanadia also added bonus points with major decisions.
Entering the meet as perhaps the team’s hottest wrestler in recent weeks, Baumann continued to move with a purpose and racked up 19 points in a 10-point major. It was the fourth time he reached that mark in his last six matches.
After falling behind 3-0 and needing a spark, Ruble went on to score 14 unanswered points to bounce back with four team points.
He escaped eight seconds after Tommy Curran’s initial takedown and never looked back, logging two takedowns, a four-point near-fall, an escape, earning 2:09 of riding time and a penalty point for stalling.
Vanadia jumped out to an 11-point lead before his 197-pound opponent Sean Carroll answered with an escape and a takedown to try and erase the bonus points.
Vanadia’s 2:27 riding time advantage put him over the edge, however, winning 12-4 for the major.
Also notably, No. 33 Stoney Buell responded from his loss against Northwestern with a never-in-doubt 6-0 decision over Brett Smith.
Buell notched the seventh shutout of his career in his 75th collegiate match.
Hayden Filipovich wrapped things up in the heavyweight bout with a 7-2 decision over Jacob Christensen.
He added two back points as well as a takedown, an escape and 1:09 of riding time to go 2-0 on the weekend.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
KING’S 20-POINT DOUBLE-DOUBLE PROPELS IRISH PAST TIGERS
CLEMSON, S.C. — She’s quietly been a hero all season, but on Sunday, the spotlight was on her, as third-ranked Notre Dame (14-2, 5-0) outlasted host Clemson (10-7, 3-3), 67-58. Liatu King’s 11-point fourth quarter helped the Irish pull away late, and the graduate forward finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds. She was an efficient 10-14 from the floor.
“It was so tough,” Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Niele Ivey said of King’s performance. “And on the defensive end, I had her guarding guards at times because they play four guards, and she was tremendous.”
Unlike many of the games this season, this contest was not a game of runs; no team scored more than 6 points without a countering bucket. The group — who was playing without All-American Hannah Hidalgo — maintained a single-digit lead throughout the game but couldn’t shake a pesky Clemson offense.
The Irish started 0-2 from the floor before hitting four in a row plus a pair of free throws by Olivia Miles to take a 10-6 advantage into the first media timeout. Clemson did not score from the floor for the final 7:02 of the first quarter, but the Tigers were bailed out by Irish fouls spotting them 5 points at the charity stripe. Notre Dame had a 17-11 lead after 10.
The Irish outscored the Tigers 13-11 in Q2 and had a 30-22 lead at the break. King led all players with 10 points, and she was tied for the game lead with 5 rebounds (Kate Koval). Miles and King were a combined 8-11 from the floor, while the rest of the team was 5-18. Clemson scored all 16 of its points from the floor in the paint.
Miles and Citron opened up the second-half scoring for Notre Dame with back-to-back fastbreak buckets after Notre Dame had just one in the first half. After going 0-10 from deep in the first half, Clemson started to drain triples, while the visitors went 0-5 from deep in the third quarter. The Tigers won the third frame, 19-17.
The Liatu King Show started soon after, as she could not miss from midrange. King went 4-5 from the floor in the final quarter and was fouled four times. The other 9 points in Q4 were scored by four different players, including a crucial triple by Maddy Westbeld. In doing so, the Irish escaped a tough road environment and remain the only undefeated team in conference play in the ACC.
Notre Dame now heads back to South Bend for back-to-back home games against No. 13 Georgia Tech on Thursday and SMU on Friday. The Irish have not faced the Mustangs since the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Keslyn Secrist tacked on 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds for the Trees, while Deja Jones joined her in double-figures with 11 points as the Sycamores scored 20-plus points in all four quarters.
Indiana State took the lead for good on a Secrist three-ball just before the first quarter horn, and broke out late in the second quarter with a 10-0 run to push its lead to double-digits at the intermission. A pair of threes from Finnegan midway through the third upped the advantage to 57-36, but Evansville rallied back to cut the Sycamore lead to 10 heading into the fourth. The visitors got within eight early in the fourth, but an 8-0 Sycamore run followed to put the game out of doubt. Stahl’s final basket of the game gave the Sycamores their most points in a game in over a decade.
First Half
Early baskets from Davina Smith and Savannah White got the offense started for the Sycamores, but Evansville hit a trio of early treys to take a 13-5 lead. Stahl and Secrist added buckets midway through, with White and Finnegan adding to the tally with layups. The Sycamores took their first lead of the game just before the buzzer on a Secrist 3-pointer to make it 20-18 after the opening period, and the Trees never trailed from that point on.
Secrist knocked down a 3-pointer to start the second, with Finnegan and Mia Simpson tacking on baskets to increase the lead to 28-21 midway through. Evansville pulled within two before the Sycamores hit their stride late in the quarter. Five straight points from Stahl, including a three-point play, along with a pair of baskets from Simpson and a three-ball from Finnegan, helped the Trees close on a 14-3 run to take a 43-31 lead into the intermission.
Second Half
Indiana State got off to a quick start in the third with baskets from Smith and White, and Finnegan added a pair of treys to give the Sycamores a 57-36 lead midway through the quarter. Simpson and Jones hit baskets late in the frame, and Queen Ruffin connected on a three from the corner as Indiana State took a 68-58 lead to the fourth.
Evansville cut its deficit down to eight early in the fourth, but baskets from Jones and Stahl started an 8-0 Sycamore run that put the game out of doubt. Secrist added a pair of layups during the run, and White followed with a three-point play to make it 79-62 midway through. Baskets from Secrist and Finnegan added to the lead, with Finnegan also tacking on a trey to make it 87-72 late in the quarter. Sunday’s game was as entertaining a Horizon League contest as there’s been all season. There were 10 lead changes and seven ties. Purdue Fort Wayne led for 21:48 and Cleveland State led for 14:42.
The post players for the ‘Dons were in foul trouble from the get-go, but Jazzlyn Linbo, Jordan Reid and Renna Schwieterman combined to play well in the frontcourt. In just 17 minutes, Linbo was 7-for-8 from the floor. Reid played 21 minutes off the bench, her most in a month, but she came up huge for the ‘Dons with eight points and eight rebounds, including three o-boards.
While the ‘Dons were depleted up front, the guards torched Cleveland State from the 3-point line. Purdue Fort Wayne was 11-for-27 from beyond the arc for 45.8 percent.
Trailing 30-27, Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 14-0 run over the final 3:17 of the first half and into the first 31 seconds of the second. Amellia Bromenschenkel drilled a 3-pointer, Reid hit two mid-range jumpers, then Ross hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer in the final three seconds of the half. After the break, Linbo went to work after being sidelined with foul trouble to score two more. This run put the ‘Dons up 41-30.
The Vikings fought back quickly, using a 9-0 run shortly after to get within one at 45-44, but Sydney Freeman hit a 3-pointer and Linbo worked in a layup to extend it back out to six.
Cleveland State took the lead in the fourth quarter after a 7-0 run, but Reid got a layup, assisted on a 3-pointer from Freeman, then converted on two free throws to put the ‘Dons up five.
2023 Horizon League Player of the Year Destiny Leo drilled a 3-pointer to tie up the game at 75-all with 22 seconds left with a foul to give. With seven seconds left, Freeman found Ross on the logo beyond the top of the key and she rattled it home. It was Ross’ fifth and most important 3-pointer of the day.
Ross finished with a team-high 19 points. Bromenschenkel added 15 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Linbo finished with 14 points and Freeman scored 11.
Jordana Reisma was great for CSU, scoring 25 points. Leo and Mickayla Perdue finished with 18.
Cleveland State falls to 13-4 and 5-2 in the league. Purdue Fort Wayne will welcome Northern Kentucky to Fort Wayne on Saturday (Jan. 18).

ACES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SETS SEASON HIGH IN THREES AT INDIANA STATE
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – At the program’s in-state rivals the University of Evansville women’s basketball team set a season high in made three-point field goals but ultimately fell to the Indiana State Sycamores 90-74.
The Purple Aces had their highest scoring offensive performance since December at the Hulman Center against Indiana State. With a season high 13 made three pointers UE had two players set career highs. But struggles under the glass kept the team from grabbing its first conference win of the season. Freshman guard Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) returned to her offensive ways in Terre Haute leading Evansville with 24 points and six assists.
Senior guard Júlia Palomo (La Seu D’Urgell) stated the scoring on Sunday afternoon with a three in the first minute of the game. The Aces shot 50% from three-point range in the first half of the quarter to open up at 13-5 lead. UE hit a cold spell coming out of the timeout as Indiana State cut Evansville’s lead down to only three. Sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS) broke the drought with her second trey of the game. But the Sycamores added seven points in the last minute to take a two-point lead into the second quarter.
The Aces shooting trouble continued into the second quarter as their first basket only came at the 6:42 mark. Freshman guard Camryn Runner hit two three’s in the first five minutes to get UE back within two. The teams matched field goal for field goal until Indiana State ended the half with a 10-0 run as Evansville trailed 43-31.
Hartwig hit the first points of the second half, but the Aces struggled to put a run together early. Runner added her fourth three two minutes in, but UE went scoreless over the next two and a half minutes as the deficit grew to 21. Evansville was able to respond as freshman forward Elle Snyder (Latrobe, Penn. / Greater Latrobe HS) hit back-to-back threes. A 15-4 run for the Aces got them back within single digits with a minute left in the quarter. Hartwig closed out the third similar to how she began it with a layup to make it a 10-point game with 10 minutes left.
UE started the final quarter making two at the line for an eight-point game. But the Sycamores responded with an eight-point run to push the game out of reach. Evansville put together a brief six to two run midway through the fourth. With two perfect opportunities at the free throw line the Aces hit the 70+ scoring mark. UE’s final basket came just under two minutes to go from junior forward Claudia Clement (Barcelona, Spain / Winthrop) as Evansville fell to Indiana State 90-74.
Both Runner and Snyder had career high games behind the arc with six and three made three pointers apiece. Runner also had a career high game in assists with six helpers to power the Aces offense along with a team high three steals. UE had two other players in double figures as Hartwig put up 16 while Clement had a career-high 10 points.
Evansville returns home to Meeks Fieldhouse for the first time since December 8th next week. The Aces will welcome the Missouri State Lady Bears to Evansville for their final time as conference opponents on Friday. Tip-off for UE and Missouri State is set for 6 p.m. and will be a Purple Out in Meeks.

SCREAMING EAGLES LOSE SECOND HALF MOMENTUM, FALL 78-58
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball lost momentum in the second half and lost at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 78-58, in the Jack Stephens Center. The Screaming Eagles are 6-10 overall and 1-5 in OVC action, while the Trojans are 9-7, 3-2 OVC.
USI dug out of a hole in the first half after spotting Little Rock a 7-0 margin to start the game. The Eagles would methodically work their way back into a 28-28 tie by the intermission, including a 13-9 run in the final nine minutes of the half.
Junior guard Damoni Harrison led the Eagles in scoring, but the offensive surge for USI came from the bench. The USI bench would score 16 of the 28 first-half points, led by junior guard Sam Kodi, who had six points.
The second half started the Eagles’ way with junior guard Braxton Jones hitting a three-pointer from the corner for USI’s first lead of the game, 31-30. Jones also would hit a second three-pointer to put the Eagles up four, 39-35, with 16:01 left, USI’s largest lead of the game.
After the Trojans used a 7-0 spurt to regain the lead, 42-39, USI recorded a 5-0 run to take the lead back, 44-42, on five-straight points by junior guard Jared Washington. The score would change or be tied 10 times in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
The Eagles’ offense would go cold after the Washington points as the Trojans went on an 8-2 run to regain command. USI’s scoring drought would go for nearly four minutes as Little Rock built a nine-point lead, 55-46.
USI would close the gap to six points, 57-51, after three-straight free throws by Harrison, but that would be as close as the Eagles would come in the final six minutes before Little Rock surged to a 78-58 final.
Individually for USI, Harrison led the Eagles and was the only player in double-digits with 17 points. Harrison was five-of-15 from the field, including three three-pointers, and four-of-five from the stripe.

USI FALLS IN OVERTIME BATTLE AT LITTLE ROCK
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball closed out its three-game road swing with a high-scoring battle against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Sunday, but the Screaming Eagles fell in overtime to the Trojans, 89-83.
Southern Indiana dropped to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference following Sunday’s result and a 1-2 mark during the three-game road stretch. USI moved into a tie for third in the conference standings. Little Rock improved to 7-8 this season and tied for second in the league with a 5-1 OVC record.
Sunday’s game took place a day later than originally scheduled after inclement winter weather in the Little Rock area postponed the matchup from Saturday.
In a competitive start to the ballgame, senior guard Vanessa Shafford drained a corner three just over a minute into the contest to set a new all-time record for most three-pointers in USI Women’s Basketball history. Shafford cashed in her 195th career three to pass Stephanie Carpenter’s (2010-14) previous all-time mark of 194.
The two sides exchanged baskets for most of the opening quarter. Shafford’s second triple of the game gave Southern Indiana a 15-9 lead at the 4:36 mark. Following a three-minute dry spell from the floor, sophomore guard Triniti Ralston hit a three of her own to push USI ahead by nine, 20-11, but Little Rock ended the opening frame with five straight points to make the score 20-16 in favor of the Screaming Eagles.
The USI advantage remained between four to six points for most of the second quarter. Following another three-minute drought by both teams in the back half of the second period, Little Rock came back to take the lead, 30-28, with two minutes to go before halftime. However, Southern Indiana reclaimed the lead inside the final minute of the first half with a three-point play from sophomore guard Sophia Loden and a last-second layup by sophomore guard Chloe Gannon. USI went into recess up 35-32.
Little Rock came out of the locker room with seven consecutive points to force Southern Indiana to take a quick timeout in the third quarter. The Eagles responded to tie the game at 39 three minutes into the second half. Later, graduate forward Meredith Raley scored six points in a three-minute span to propel USI back in front, 43-41. The Trojans made another surge before two three-point plays by Raley and Ralston flipped the scoreboard back in USI’s favor, 53-48, with 90 seconds left in the third. Southern Indiana’s lead increased to nine, 59-50, by the end of the third after a four-point possession.
The Trojans had another hot start to the fourth frame, going on a 10-2 spurt to draw back within one of USI, 61-60, near the midway point of the quarter. Raley continued her strong second half offensively, scoring at the 3:37 mark to give Southern Indiana an eight-point lead and reaching 20 points in the game for the second consecutive outing and third time in the last four games. Little Rock inched its way back and grabbed the lead, 75-73, on a three-pointer with 30 seconds left. A driving layup by junior guard Ali Saunders with under 20 seconds left tied the game and led to overtime.
In the overtime period, Little Rock grabbed early momentum and went ahead by five, 80-75. Southern Indiana answered back to within a point twice in the middle of overtime, but the Trojans capitalized on free throws down the stretch to capture the win.
Southern Indiana shot 49 percent (31-63) for the game and 31 percent (5-16) from three. USI was 16-19 for 84 percent at the foul line. The Screaming Eagles won the rebounding battle, 35-30. USI had five players finish in double figures with Raley leading the way with 25 points, 19 of which came in the second half. The performance follows Raley’s career-high 29 points in the Eagles’ win at Southeast Missouri State University on Thursday. Ralston dropped 16 points and Saunders added 12 points. Shafford posted her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Loden also notched 10 points in the game.
Little Rock went for 57 percent (33-58) from the floor and 29 percent (6-21) from beyond the arc. The Trojans were 65 percent (17-26) at the free-throw line. Junior forward Faith Lee led four Trojans in double digits with a game-high 27 points.
Southern Indiana returns to Liberty Arena, home of the Screaming Eagles, next week for a pair of home games. The homestand begins Thursday at 5 p.m. against Lindenwood University and wraps up Saturday against Western Illinois University for Military Appreciation Day at 1 p.m. Tickets for all home games at Liberty Arena can be purchased online at usiscreamingeagles.com or the USI Ticket Office.
VALPO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS SUNDAY MATCHUP AT BELMONT
The first quarter proved to be the difference for the Valpo women’s basketball team on Sunday, as despite getting as close as six points in the second half, the Beacons were unable to overcome a 13-point deficit after the opening period as they fell 67-53 at Belmont.
How It Happened
After the teams traded baskets over the first two minutes of the game, the Bruins went on a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to pull out to an 18-4 lead.
Belmont’s lead remained in double figures for the remainder of the opening period and was 25-12 at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was played entirely within a six-point spread. Belmont got its lead up to as many as 17 points, while the Beacons moved as close as they got in the quarter heading into halftime as a layup from Lexi Castator (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) got Valpo within 38-26 at intermission.
Belmont pushed its edge to 16 points early in the third quarter before the Beacons responded with a 9-0 run to move within single digits. Nevaeh Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) started the run with a putback basket, Leah Earnest (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) hit a 3-pointer and a layup on consecutive possessions and when Layla Gold (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) connected on a pair of free throws with 5:33 to play in the third period, Valpo was within 42-35.
The Bruins stretched back out to a 12-point lead a couple minutes later, but a fast-break layup from Jackson and a 3-pointer from Katie Beyer (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) again cut the deficit to seven with 90 seconds to play in the quarter.
Earnest beat the third-quarter buzzer with a drive and finish to bring Valpo within 51-43 with 10 minutes to play.
Gold converted a driving layup on the Beacons’ second possession of the fourth quarter to make it a two-possession game.
Valpo limited Belmont to just two baskets over the first six-plus minutes of the final period, but was unable to make any more headway as the Beacons had just Gold’s field goal over the same stretch. The difference came at the free throw line, where the Bruins took their opportunities to go on a 9-2 run after Gold’s basket to extend their lead back to double digits for good.
Inside the Game
Sunday’s game concluded a stretch of four road games in 11 days for the Beacons, all of which came against top-100 NET teams. Belmont entered Sunday’s contest ranked #57 in the NET.
After shooting season worsts from the field and 3-point range at Murray State last time out, the Beacons had their second-worst marks in both departments Sunday, hitting just 33.3% (19-of-57) from the field and 17.9% (5-of-28) from 3-point range.
Valpo did limit Belmont to 42.3% shooting from the floor and 24% from 3-point range on the defensive end.
The Beacons were a +7 in turnover margin on Sunday, committing just 12 miscues — matching their season low against a D-I opponent — while forcing 19 Belmont turnovers. Valpo outscored the Bruins 21-12 in points off turnovers.
Valpo also held a 10-7 edge in second-chance points over the Bruins.
Earnest paced Valpo with 15 points on Sunday and added five rebounds as well. She connected on four field goals, moving her into a tie for fifth place in program history with 493 career field goals made.
Beyer came off the bench with 10 points — her fifth double-figure scoring effort of the year — and a team-high seven rebounds — setting a career high.

Next Up in Valpo Basketball: The Valparaiso University men’s basketball team will look to return to the win column and earn a split on a challenging Missouri Valley Conference road swing as the Beacons battle Belmont on Tuesday night in Nashville. The team made the short bus ride from Murray, Ky. to the Music City on Sunday. Valpo is hoping to secure its fourth victory in the last five games after a three-game winning streak was snapped on the first stop of this journey.
Last Time Out: The free-throw line has been a difference maker in a positive way in many Valpo games this season, but charity tosses played a key role in Valpo’s 58-47 loss at Murray State on Saturday. The Racers had 24 attempts to Valpo’s three and outscored the Beacons 18-2 at the stripe. Valpo had a better field-goal percentage and better three-point percentage and turnovers were nearly even (12-11 in favor of the hosts), but the foul line was the big factor. Cooper Schwieger (12) and Darius DeAveiro (11) were the team’s top scorers.

Head Coach Roger Powell Jr.: Roger Powell Jr. (17-32) is in his second season as the head coach of the Valpo men’s basketball program. After helping guide Gonzaga to a 121-13 record during his four seasons as an assistant coach, Powell returned to Valpo, where he was part of head coach Bryce Drew’s staff from 2011-2016 and led the team to 124 wins in five seasons, including a program-record 30 victories and a National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title game appearance in 2015-16. He was part of head coach Mark Few’s Gonzaga staff as the Bulldogs reached the 2021 national championship game after winning their first 31 games of the season. During Powell’s first season on staff in 2019-20, Gonzaga was 31-2 at the time the NCAA college basketball season was halted due to COVID-19. The Bulldogs reached the Sweet Sixteen in each of his final three seasons on staff, including two Elite Eight appearances and the aforementioned trip to the 2021 national title game. Prior to his arrival at Gonzaga, Powell served as the associate head coach at Vanderbilt University under Bryce Drew from 2016-2019. During his stint as an assistant at Valpo, he was part of four Horizon League regular-season championships in a five-year period while also leading the 2012-13 and 2014-15 squads to Horizon League tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. A product of Joliet West High School and a native of Joliet, Ill., Powell capped a prolific collegiate playing career at Illinois with a national title game appearance in 2005 before going on to a successful professional playing career.
Series Notes: Valpo holds a 9-7 lead in the all-time series but the Bruins have won six straight head-to-head matchups including all five since joining the Missouri Valley Conference. Valpo is seeking its first win over Belmont since Dec. 3, 2015, a 61-57 nonconference triumph at the ARC. The Beacons have dropped the last four games played in Nashville in the series with the team’s most recent win at Belmont coming 86-60 on Feb. 7, 2000. Valpo dropped all three meetings last season and is hoping to avenge a season-ending 86-61 loss in the first round of Arch Madness.
With a Win on Tuesday at Belmont, Valpo Would…
Surpass its Missouri Valley Conference win total from last season with 13 games remaining.
Hold a 4-3 record through seven Valley games, which would mark Valpo’s best record through seven league games since 2018-19 (5-2).
Own 11 wins in the first 18 games of a season for the first time since 2018-19 (11-7 through 18 that season).
Pick up its first win over Belmont since the Bruins joined the Missouri Valley Conference, snapping a six-game head-to-head skid.
Improve to 6-2 in the last eight games.
Notes Wrapping Up Jan. 11: Murray State 58, Valpo 47
Valpo played its first conference game decided by more than seven points as each of the team’s first five Valley games were determined by seven points or fewer.
The Beacons were outscored 18-2 at the free-throw line in a game that marked just their third time in 17 games shooting at a lower percentage than the opponent. Valpo made just two free throws after making 32 the previous game and averaging 19.1 makes at the stripe per game this season prior to this contest. The team’s three free-throw attempts and two makes were both season lows.
Cooper Schwieger saw his streak of 23 consecutive made free throws come to an end as he missed his lone attempt.
Valpo shot 34.5 percent to Murray State’s 34.0 percent, while the Beacons also shot at a higher clip from 3 – 29.2 percent to 25 percent. This marked Valpo’s first loss of the season when shooting at a higher field-goal percentage than the opponent as the Beacons fell to 5-1 this season and 9-2 under head coach Roger Powell Jr. when outshooting the opponent. Jan. 31, 2024 at Drake was the only other game under Powell where Valpo lost despite shooting at a higher clip.
This was just the fourth time in the last decade that Valpo has lost by double figures despite shooting at a higher percentage both from the floor and from 3 (January 2024 at Drake, November 2022 at Toledo and November 2018 at West Virginia).
Schwieger scored in double figures for the eighth straight game. He was 6-of-11 from the field and also pulled down seven rebounds, his ninth game with at least seven this year including his second straight.
Valpo blocked seven shots, a season high against a Division-I opponent. Schwieger accounted for five of those blocks, becoming the first Valpo player to block five shots in a game since Ben Krikke on Feb. 14, 2023 vs. Southern Illinois.
Schwieger became just the fourth Valpo player in the last 20 years to record a 12-point, seven-rebound, five-block game, joining Derrik Smits (Nov. 24, 2018 at West Virginia), Vashil Fernandez (Jan. 16, 2016 vs. Green Bay) and Mohamed Kone (Dec. 2, 2005 vs. Tulane).
Darius DeAveiro’s 11 points represented his third straight game with at least seven points and his third time this season in double figures. He has scored in double figures twice in the last three games.
Justus McNair had five points and a season-high five rebounds off the bench while logging 16 minutes, his highest total in league play.

FOOTBALL HISTORY
January 13, 1957 – Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – The NFL held its 7th annual Pro Bowl game and it was the all-stars of the Western Conference who overcame the challenge of their Eastern Conference rivals 19-10. The Most Valuable player on the defensive side per the Pro-Football-Reference.com was Pittsburgh’s Ernie Stautner, a defensive tackle and Baltimore Colt Bert Rechichar, a kicker won the award for the MVP of the offense.
January 13, 1958 – NCAA adds 2 point conversion to football scoring. Despite the plays used in college ball, according to the liveabout.com website, it was not immediately adapted in professional football. In fact, the two-point conversion rule was not officially adopted by the NFL until 1994. The professional levels of football did tinker with the 2 point play prior to 1994 though. According to the American Football Database, the AFL used the conversion tactic during its ten years of existence in the 1960’s. The NFL Europe and its reincarnation the World League of American Football adopted the rule and were probably a further testing ground of it prior to the NFL’s adoption. It has really added some interesting dynamics to contests as formulas and charts have been famously made to determine when a team should go for two. The success of the two point try has been reported to be anywhere from 40% to 55% accomplishment, so there is a pretty good sized risk reward aspect to it.
January 13, 1963 – Balboa Stadium, San Diego – The second AFL All Star Game was played. In the contest it was the Western Division All-stars who edged their Eastern Division, counter parts 21-14. The MVPs of the game were Dallas Texans running back Curtis McClinton and Earl Faison who played defensive end for the Chargers.
January 13, 1963 – The annual NFL Pro Bowl game was played at the Lis Angeles Memorial Coliseum once again. The NFL Eastern Conference outscored the Western Conference Pro Bowlers 30-20. The offensive Most Valuable Player was Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns while the MVP of the defense was Pittsburgh’s defensive tackle Eugene Lipscomb.
January 13, 1974 – Rice Stadium, Houston, Texas – The Miami Dolphins won their second consecutive NFL Title by claiming victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII. The final score was Miami 24, Minnesota 7. The big game’s Most Valuable Player was Dolphins bruising running back Larry Csonka. The Dolphins became the first teams to play in three consecutive Super Bowl games.
January 13, 2020 – Superdome, New Orleans – National Championship for College Football took place as Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow and his teammates of the #1 LSU Tigers were to be tested by Trevor Lawrence and the rest of his Tigers of #3 Clemson. LSU overpowered Clemson 42-15 to win the National College Playoff Championship in this battle of Tigers.

January 13, 1907 – Sulphur Springs, Texas – Southern Methodist University’s Hall of Fame stalwart QB Gerald Mann was born.
January 13, 1947 – Cairo, Georgia – Defensive Tackle Bill Stanfill of Georgia celebrated his arrival into the world. The National Football Foundation voters chose Bill Stanfill for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
January 13, 1958 – Vero Beach, Florida – Florida A&M’s outstanding guard Tyrone McGriff was born per the NFF. The College Football Hall of Fame happily opened its doors wide in 1996 to accept Tyron McGriff into the lodge of collegiate legends.
