NFL ROUND-UP
VIKINGS’ DEFENSE HOLDS JAGUARS TO 143 YARDS
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Minnesota’s stingy defense held Jacksonville to 143 yards — the fewest in coach Doug Pederson’s three seasons — and the Vikings overcame Sam Darnold’s three interceptions to beat the Jaguars 12-7 on Sunday.
It was Darnold’s first three-interception game in three years. All of them came while targeting All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson, who finished with five catches for 48 yards.
The Vikings (7-2) trailed most of the day, but took the lead on the third of John Parker Romo’s four field goals. Romo hit from 29, 34, 33 and 45 yards in his NFL debut.
The Jaguars (2-8) had a chance late thanks to Travon Walker’s sack on a third-and-1 play. Coach Kevin O’Connell had Darnold passing with roughly three minutes to go, a head-scratcher given Jacksonville had been so lethargic on offense.
Mac Jones made his first start in nearly a year, filling in for Trevor Lawrence (non-throwing shoulder), and was mostly ineffective. But he had Jacksonville on the move down the stretch and got help from a face-mask penalty against linebacker Blake Cashman.
But Jones threw his second pick with 1:49 remaining to essentially end it. Jones had two more turnovers earlier in the fourth — an interception and a fumbled snap.
Minnesota looked like as though it would have to punt in the final minute, but Walker was flagged for unnecessary roughness on third down for trying to punch the ball out of running back Aaron Jones’ hands. The Vikings took a knee from there.
Mac Jones completed 14 of 22 passes for 111 yards and a 38.3 passer rating. Darnold’s rating was slightly better after completing 24 of 38 passes for 241 yards.
Darnold targeted his tight ends 15 times. T.J. Hockenson finished with eight receptions for 72 yards. Josh Oliver caught four passes for 52 yards.
Jacksonville’s yardage total was the fifth lowest in franchise history.
Robinson’s return
Vikings left tackle Cam Robinson was flagged for three penalties in his return to Jacksonville. The most egregious one came in the third quarter when Robinson was penalized for hitting cornerback Ronald Darby out of bounds during an interception return. Several of his former teams, including defensive ends Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, got in Robinson’s face after the play.
The Jaguars traded Robinson to the Vikings last week, and he ended up with a quick return to the place where he spent the first eight years of his NFL career.
Injuries
Vikings: RB Aaron Jones left in the third quarter with a chest injury and later returned.
Jaguars: RB Tank Bigsby (ankle), CB Tyson Campbell (shoulder) and LB Devin Lloyd (shoulder) left the field, but later returned. Jaguars DE Arik Armstead left in the fourth to be evaluated for a concussion.

DRAKE MAYE GETS THE BETTER OF CALEB WILLIAMS AS SACK-HAPPY PATRIOTS BEAT BEARS
CHICAGO (AP) — Drake Maye got the better of Caleb Williams in a matchup between top rookie quarterbacks and the New England Patriots beat the struggling Chicago Bears 19-3 on Sunday.
Maye led five scoring drives and the Patriots sacked Williams a season-high nine times, helping New England (3-7) come away with the win after losing seven of eight.
As if losing at Washington on a Hail Mary pass by Jayden Daniels two weeks ago and then falling flat at Arizona last week wasn’t enough, things took another bad turn for the Bears (4-5).
They managed just 142 yards and were 1 of 14 on third downs facing a team that came in tied with six others for the worst record in the NFL. It got so bad that fans started calling for coach Matt Eberflus’ dismissal in the closing minutes, chanting “Fire ‘Flus!”
Maye didn’t exactly light it up. The No. 3 overall draft pick was 15 of 25 for 184 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Williams, the top pick, struggled in his third straight game. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner out of Southern California was 16 of 30 for 120 yards, as the Bears’ eight-game win streak at Soldier Field came to an end.
The schedule is about to take a tougher turn for the Bears with six of their final eight games against the NFC North, starting with Green Bay’s visit next week.
Anfernee Jennings and Deatrich Wise each had two sacks for New England, and Joey Slye kicked four field goals.
The Patriots led 13-3 at halftime after scoring 10 points in the final 1:46.
Maye threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to rookie Ja’Lynn Polk, and Slye kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to send New England to the locker room with a 10-point lead. Fans showered the Bears with boos after watching their team manage just 87 yards and go 0 for 6 on third downs.
Chicago had prime opportunities on each of its first three possessions, only to come away empty-handed.
The Bears went three-and-out on their first drive after DeAndre Carter returned a punt 38 yards to New England’s 47.
After Slye kicked a 30-yard field goal to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead, Chicago drove to the New England 31. But the Bears got knocked out of field goal range on third down when Williams hung onto the ball rather than throw it away and took an 8-yard sack by Wise.
Chicago’s T.J. Edwards then intercepted Maye near midfield, but the Bears went three and out again. They tied it midway through the second quarter, settling for a field goal by Cairo Santos after stalling at the 14.
The Patriots then went 70 yards, with Maye’s 2-yard touchdown to rookie Ja’Lynn Polk to cap a 10-play drive making it 10-3 with 1:46 left in the half. After Chicago punted, New England drove to the 19, and Slye kicked a 37-yarder as time expired.
Things were so ugly for Chicago that fans cheered sarcastically following Cole Kmet’s 7-yard reception early in the third quarter. The veteran tight end wasn’t targeted last week after having one pass thrown his way against Washington.
Injuries
Patriots: Wise was helped off the field in the final minute. … DT Jaquelin Roy (neck) and CB Marcellas Dial Jr. (head) were injured during the game.
Bears: LG Teven Jenkins (ankle) left early in the second quarter. He was helped to the sideline after he was hurt blocking on a fourth-down scramble by Williams. Doug Kramer replaced him. … Special teamer Tarvarius Moore (concussion) left.

ALLEN RUNS FOR TD AND BILLS FORCE 4 TURNOVERS BY FLACCO TO WIN 5TH STRAIGHT
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Taron Johnson returned Joe Flacco’s first pass 23 yards for a touchdown Sunday, and Josh Allen and James Cook each scored on TD runs to lead the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills past the Indianapolis Colts 30-20.
The Bills (8-2) extended their winning streak to five with their first victory at Indianapolis since 1998. Allen was 22 of 37 for 280 yards with two interceptions while running eight times for 50 yards. Cook had 19 carries for 80 yards.
Flacco had four turnovers — three interceptions and a fumble — in his second start since replacing the benched Anthony Richardson. He was 26 of 35 for 272 yards and two TDs as the Colts (4-6) lost their third straight.
Jonathan Taylor rushed 21 times for 114 yards and rookie receiver Adonai Mitchell had his biggest game of the season with six catches for 71 yards.
It was an odd game, full of twists, turns and turnovers.
Just seven plays after Johnson’s pick-6, Flacco was intercepted again near midfield and the Bills quickly converted that takeaway into a field goal and a 10-0 lead.
The Colts responded. Taylor’s 59-yard run set up Matt Gay’s first field goal and after Indy’s defense stopped the Bills on fourth down, Flacco threw a 2-yard TD pass to Tyler Goodson to tie the score at 10.
Allen’s interception on Buffalo’s ensuing series set up another Indy field goal that made it 13-10.
It didn’t take Allen long to regain control.
His 13-yard TD run, which tied the late O.J. Simpson for the second-most rushing scores (57) in franchise history, gave Buffalo a 17-13 lead. Tyler Bass made field goals for Buffalo at the end of the first half and early in the fourth quarter, and Cook sealed the win with a 2-yard TD run late in the fourth.
Injury report
The Bills opened the game without two injured receivers, rookie Keon Coleman and the recently acquired Amari Cooper. They also lost TE Dalton Kincaid (knee) during the game. RT Spencer Brown left briefly with an ankle injury.
Indy also deactivated its top receiver, Michael Pittman Jr. (back), and wound up playing three rookie offensive linemen after LT Bernhard Raimann left in the first half with a knee injury.

WILSON’S 3 TDS HELP POWER STEELERS PAST COMMANDERS FOR 4TH STRAIGHT WIN
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Russell Wilson shook off his first interception in 11 months and hit trade-deadline pickup Mike Williams for a 32-yard touchdown with less than 2 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter — the quarterback’s third scoring throw Sunday — to lift the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 28-27 comeback victory over Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.
Coming off a bye, the AFC North-leading Steelers (7-2) won their fourth game in a row, including all three since Wilson took over from Justin Fields as the starting QB. Wilson’s stats were not the prettiest, but he got the job done: 14 for 28 for 195 yards, the three TDs and the one pick.
George Pickens delivered an acrobatic catch in the end zone on a 16-yarder in the first quarter, and tight end Pat Freiermuth scored on a pass from 3 yards out in the second, much to the delight of the thousands of Terrible Towel-twirling Steelers fans in the stands.
Washington (7-3) led 24-14 but couldn’t hold on as it attempted to get to 8-2 overall for the first time since 1986 and 5-0 at home for the first time since 1991, when the team went on to win the Super Bowl under coach Joe Gibbs.
Daniels, the No. 2 overall draft pick who has starred for first-year coach Dan Quinn, was 17 for 34 for 202 yards without a touchdown or interception and he had three carries for 5 yards, his lowest output as a pro. After the Wilson-to-Williams score — Williams was acquired from the New York Jets last week — Daniels moved Washington to midfield. But on fourth-and-9 with less than 1 1/2 minutes to go, Daniels connected with Zach Ertz, but the catch was ruled just short of a first down; until then, the Commanders were 11 for 11 on fourth down.
On the ensuing possession, Pittsburgh faced a fourth-and-1 at Washington’s 49 with 1:02 on the clock and decided to line up as if to go for it. Rookie defensive lineman Johnny Newton jumped before the snap, and the penalty allowed the Steelers to keep the ball and run out the clock.
Chinn picked off Wilson late in the third quarter and recovered Jaylen Warren’s fumble at the 1-yard line in the fourth. Austin Ekeler ran for two short touchdowns for Washington, which had won three games in a row as part of a swift turnaround from last season’s 4-13 record under Ron Rivera.
Injuries
Steelers: CB Donte Jackson (hamstring) left in the second half.
Commanders: C Tyler Biadasz (ankle) left the game briefly but returned. … RT Andrew Wylie (shoulder) was a late scratch, while newly acquired CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) and RB Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) sat out, as expected.
Up next
Steelers: Host division rival Baltimore next Sunday.

SAINTS SNAP 7-GAME SKID, RIZZI GETS 1ST WIN BEHIND VALDES-SCANTLING’S 2 TDS
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught three passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns in his second game for New Orleans, and the Saints began Darren Rizzi’s tenure as interim coach by snapping a seven-game skid with a 20-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
The 54-year-old Rizzi, the Saints’ special teams coordinator, was given his first head coaching opportunity on Monday after the firing of third-year coach Dennis Allen.
His triumphant debut came not only against the NFC South’s first-place team, but the Saints’ oldest regional rival.
Tyrann Mathieu thwarted a promising Atlanta drive with an interception of Kirk Cousins at the New Orleans 38 with two minutes to go.
Atlanta got the ball back after Alvin Kamara, who had 109 yards from scrimmage and became the Saints’ all-time rushing leader, stunningly dropped Derek Carr’s accurate third down pass deep down the left sideline for what could have been a game-clinching first down.
But just as Atlanta crossed midfield, Chase Young’s sack and strip of Cousins caused a 19-yard loss back to the Atlanta 32-yard line with 34 seconds remaining. Although the Falcons recovered, the play proved pivotal.
The Falcons were forced to use their final timeout and had to make a rushed decision two plays later on whether to try a 60-yard field goal or keep the offense on the field after a completion gave them fourth-and-4 on the New Orleans 43 with 18 seconds left and the clock running.
Atlanta tried a quick pass to Ray-Ray McCloud III, who was tackled short of first-down yardage by Ugo Amadi as time expired.
The Falcons missed opportunities to score at least 13 more points than they did and lost despite rushing for 181 yards and outgaining New Orleans 468 yards to 365.
Younghoe Koo had three failed field-goal attempts for the first time in his career. One missed wide, another was partially blocked and a third hit the upright.
On another drive, consecutive penalties pushed a first-and-goal from the 5 back 20 yards, helping the Saints hold Atlanta to a field goal.
Cousins completed 23 of 38 passes for 306 yards and was intercepted once.
Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns, including a tackle-breaking, 37-yard run in the third quarter that pulled the Falcons as close as a field goal.
Carr finished with 269 yards and two TDs passing without a turnover.
Kamara’s 55 yards rushing gave him 6,544 yards, eclipsing Mark Ingram’s previous mark of 6,500.
Injuries
Falcons: DT Ta’Quon Graham left the game in the first half with a pectoral injury.
Saints: DE Payton Turner came out of the game with an apparent injury to his hand or wrist area.
Up next
Falcons: At Denver next Sunday.
Saints: Host Cleveland on Sunday.
CHIEFS BLOCK BRONCOS’ POTENTIAL WINNER AS TIME EXPIRES TO REMAIN PERFECT
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs blocked Broncos kicker Wil Lutz’s 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired on Sunday, and Kansas City escaped with a 16-14 victory over the Broncos to extend its winning streak to 15 games dating to last season.
The Chiefs had taken the lead on Harrison Butker’s field goal with 5:57 remaining, but Bo Nix and the Broncos converted on a trio of third downs while marching right back down field. They proceeded to set up Lutz for the winner, but Leo Chenal was given credit for coming up the middle amid a big push by the Kansas City defensive line to get his hand on the kick.
Patrick Mahomes finished with 266 yards passing and a touchdown for Kansas City, which became only the fifth team to follow up a Super Bowl triumph by winning its first nine games. That also matches the best start to a season in franchise history.
The Chiefs’ winning streak dating to last season is the longest in the NFL since the Packers won 19 in a row from 2010-11.
Travis Kelce had eight catches for 64 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City. DeAndre Hopkins caught four passes for 56 yards, and Kareem Hunt was held to 35 yards rushing but also caught seven passes for 65 yards.
Nix finished with 215 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Broncos (5-5). Courtland Sutton had six catches for 60 yards and a score, and his 13-yard reception on third-and-6 with 1:45 left gave Denver a chance to kick as time expired.
The Broncos stunned the Chiefs a year ago, forcing five turnovers in a 21-9 win at Denver that ended a 16-game losing streak in the series. And they clearly had the same intention in mind as the AFC West rivals met again Sunday.
Their defense harassed Mahomes throughout the first half, particularly when an injury to Wanya Morris forced rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia into the game. And the Broncos capitalized on offense with two long scoring drives, the first ending with Nix finding Devaughn Vele wide open and the second with Sutton’s 32-yard TD catch for a 14-3 lead.
It was Mahomes who got the Chiefs on track, going 7 for 7 for 62 yards on the ensuing drive. When it looked like it stalled at the Denver 2, Chiefs coach Andy Reid went for it on fourth down, and Mahomes hit Kelce for the score.
The Chiefs still trailed 14-10 at the break — so they had Denver right where they wanted them.
Unflappable in winning its last eight when trailing in the second half, Kansas City closed within 14-13 on Butker’s chip-shot field goal late in the third quarter. The Chiefs defense then forced back-to-back punts, and Mahomes and the offense drove to the Denver 2, where Butker added the go-ahead kick with just under six minutes remaining.
Swift returns
Taylor Swift was back at Arrowhead Stadium to watch Kelce and the Chiefs just six days after turning up to see their win over Tampa Bay on Monday night. The pop superstar resumes her Eras Tour on Thursday night at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Injuries
Chiefs: Morris hurt his knee in the first half but returned early in the fourth quarter.

MOODY SHRUGS OFF 3 MISSED FGS TO KICK 49ERS PAST BUCS IN MCCAFFREY’S DEBUT
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Jake Moody redeemed himself after missing three earlier field goals by booting a 44-yarder as time expired Sunday to give the San Francisco 49ers a 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in running back Christian McCaffrey’s season debut.
Moody, in his first game back after being sidelined three weeks with a sprained ankle, also kicked field goals of 28 and 33 yards for the defending NFC champion 49ers (5-4), who have won consecutive games for the first time this season.
But the usually reliable kicker, who was 13 of 14 entering Sunday, also missed wide left from 49 and 50 yards before missing wide right on a 44-yard attempt that would have given San Francisco a six-point lead with 3:09 remaining.
TV cameras caught 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel exchanging words and appearing to shove long snapper Taybor Pepper when the wide receiver approached Moody on the sideline after the third miss.
McCaffrey returned to practice last Monday after being sidelined since early September due to Achilles tendinitis. He carried for 5 yards on the first play and game and finished with 39 yards rushing on 13 attempts. The 2023 AP Offensive Player of the Year also had six receptions for 68 yards.
Baker Mayfield led a drive to set up a tying field goal for the Bucs (4-6) with help from three straight personal foul penalties — setting the stage for Moody to win it for the 49ers. Mayfield completed 18 of 29 passes for 116 yards and one TD for the Bucs, who have lost four in a row.
Brock Purdy threw for 353 yards without an interception, and had touchdowns of 46 yards to rookie Ricky Pearsall — the wide receiver’s first NFL score — and 11 yards to George Kittle. He moved his team into position for the winning field goal with two completions to Jauan Jennings and two more to Pearsall.
Pearsall sat out the first six games after being shot in the chest after an autograph session in downtown San Francisco on Aug. 31. On his touchdown, he caught a pass over the middle from Purdy, accelerated toward the left sideline where he outran the pursuit until safety Antoine Winfield Jr. closed in and nearly brought him down as the receiver extended the ball over the goal line.
The Bucs wiped out a 10-0 deficit with help from 49ers punt returner Jacob Cowing, whose third-quarter muff was recovered at San Francisco’s 21 to set up Tampa Bay’s first TD. Four plays later, Mayfield threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Rachaad White that made it 10-10.
Rookie Bucky Irving scored on 12-yard run that gave Tampa Bay ahead 17-13 early in the fourth quarter. Purdy answered with his TD throw to Kittle to put the 49ers back in front with just over seven minutes left.
Injuries
49ers: DE Nick Bosa played after being listed as questionable after hurting his hip in practice.
Buccaneers: LT Tristan Wirfs limped off with a right knee injury in the second quarter and did not return. CB Zyon McCollum (hamstring) and LB Chris Braswell (oblique) departed in the second half.

HURTS ACCOUNTS FOR 4 TDS AS EAGLES ROLL PAST BUMBLING, PRESCOTT-LESS COWBOYS
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores, and the Philadelphia Eagles rolled to a 34-6 victory over the bumbling Cowboys on Sunday in the first game since Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott tore a hamstring.
Hurts shook off two sacks from Micah Parsons in the star pass rusher’s return from injury, connecting with Dallas Goedert for one of the TDs after his tight end missed three games with a hamstring issue.
The Eagles (7-2) took over first place in the NFC East with their fifth consecutive victory while defending division champion Dallas (3-6) fell to 0-4 at home in a fourth straight loss overall.
Cooper Rush didn’t look anything like the replacement who went 4-1 filling in for Prescott two years ago, going 13 of 23 for just 45 yards. Rush won the first four games in that 2022 stretch before throwing three interceptions in a loss at the Eagles.
Picks weren’t the problem this time. Just about everything else was.
Rush lost two fumbles among five turnovers for the Cowboys, and was replaced briefly by Trey Lance early in the second half and then for good in the fourth quarter as frequent boos cascaded from the crowd. Lance threw an interception.
Prescott won’t be back anytime soon, if at all this season. The franchise QB plans to seek one more medical opinion before deciding whether to have season-ending surgery on the hamstring he tore in last week’s 27-21 loss to Atlanta.
Hurts was far from his best, throwing an interception in the end zone before the fumble on one of Parsons’ sacks gave Dallas the ball at the Philadelphia 6-yard line. Parsons missed the previous four games with an ankle injury.
The inept Dallas offense couldn’t even get a touchdown from there, so Hurts had plenty of time to settle in. He was 14 of 20 for 202 yards with 56 yards rushing before getting replaced by Kenny Pickett with the Eagles leading 31-6 in the fourth quarter.
Hurts opened the scoring with a tush-push TD after Rush dropped a snap and lost the fumble at the Dallas 17. Hurt had an 8-yard run to go with the 14-yard score toss to Goedert and a 5-yarder to Johnny Wilson.
One of the Dallas fumbles was into the Philadelphia end zone by Ezekiel Elliott when Dallas had a chance to take a lead in the second quarter. Elliott was back in the lineup after missing the trip to Atlanta because he was late for meetings.
Injuries
Eagles CB Darius Slay injured an ankle in the first half. … Cowboys LB DeMarvion Overshown left with a knee injury in the second half. … Cowboys rookie LT Tyler Guyton was inactive with a neck issue.

JAKE BATES MAKES 52-YARDER AS TIME EXPIRES, LIONS OVERCOME JARED GOFF’S 5 INTS TO BEAT TEXANS 26-23
HOUSTON (AP) — Nothing was going right for Detroit’s Jared Goff on Sunday night against the Houston Texans.
The nine-year veteran threw a career-high five interceptions through three quarters and the Lions trailed by 10 points.
Instead of wallowing in his mistakes, Goff rallied the Lions to an improbable 26-23 win that was capped by a 52-yard field goal by Jake Bates as time expired.
“I had some unfortunate things early, but I’ve been through a whole lot worse than that,” Goff said. “Mentally, I’ve been to the bottom. Some unlucky plays aren’t going to throw me off my game.”
The Lions improved to 8-1 for the first time since 1954 with their seventh straight victory overall and fifth in a row on the road.
“That was a hard-fought game,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said. “We had to fight our way back in there. I’m proud of the guys. There’s things we’ve got to clean up, but our guys wouldn’t go away. They just wouldn’t go away.”
Detroit trailed 23-7 at halftime after Goff threw three interceptions in the first two quarters. He threw two more picks in the third. Nonetheless, the Lions scored 16 straight points to tie it with about five minutes to go on Bates’ 58-yard field goal.
“I just don’t deserve this,” Bates said. “I was a soccer player growing up. I idolized football players in the NFL, and just to be here is surreal. I’m still pinching myself.”
The Texans (6-4) had a chance to take the lead with just under two minutes left, but Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 58-yard try was wide left.
“We didn’t make the plays to win the game … to win games guys have to step up and make plays and that’s not happening,” Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said.
The Lions became the first team to win when throwing five or more interceptions since Atlanta beat Arizona 23-19 on Nov. 18, 2012, when Matt Ryan was picked off five times.
David Montgomery ran for 3-yard touchdown early in the third, but his run on the 2-point conversion try was stopped, leaving the Lions down 23-13. A 9-yard TD reception by Amon-Ra St. Brown got Detroit within 23-20 early in the fourth quarter.
Goff threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns and Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 71 yards.
C.J. Stroud threw for 232 yards and a touchdown, but he threw two interceptions in the second half as the Texans were shut out after the break to lose for the third time in four games.
“I blame this game on me,” Stroud said. “I’ve got to be better in those moments. When the defense is getting turnovers like they did, we’ve got to be able to reward them with points.”
Goff’s five picks were the most by an NFL player since Jameis Winston threw five on Oct. 13, 2019, for Tampa Bay against Carolina.
Goff hadn’t thrown an interception in five games and entered Sunday with just four all season. His previous career high was four in a loss to Chicago while with the Rams on Dec. 9, 2018.
“There’s just these little circumstances that come into play so for me, I’m not going to tell him anything,” Campbell said. “These weren’t ill-advised throws, it just wasn’t our day.”
Rookie Kamari Lassiter led the Texans with two interceptions as they set a franchise record for picks.
Jimmie Ward intercepted Goff on Detroit’s first drive on a ball that was tipped by Jalen Pitre to give Houston the ball at the Detroit 33. The Texans made it 7-0 when Joe Mixon ran 8 yards for a touchdown.
A 34-yard field goal by Fairbairn extended the lead to 10-0 with about two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Detroit cut the lead to 10-7 on a 20-yard touchdown reception by Sam LaPorta.
The Texans were up by 6 when Denico Autry hit Goff’s arm as he threw and the ball fell into the hands of Henry To’oTo’o to give Houston possession at the Detroit 36.
But the Texans couldn’t move the ball after that and settled for Fairbairn’s 29-yard field goal that made it 16-7 with about four minutes left in the first half.
Houston extended the lead to 23-7 when Stroud found John Metchie III for a 15-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left in the second quarter. It was the first career touchdown for Metchie, who missed his entire rookie season in 2022 undergoing treatment for leukemia.
Goff threw his third interception when Lassiter picked off his desperation throw on the last play of the first half.
Davis intercepted Stroud on the first play of the second half. But Lassiter grabbed his second interception of the game three plays later.
After Montgomery’s touchdown, Detroit’s Carlton Davis III leapt in front of Tank Dell in the end zone for his second interception. Goff threw his fifth pick two plays later, but the Texans couldn’t capitalize and were forced to punt.
Injuries
Lions: LaPorta injured the AC joint in one of his shoulders but Campbell said he doesn’t know how significant of an injury it is.
Texans: DE Will Anderson Jr. missed the game with an ankle injury. … WR Nico Collins didn’t play after being activated from injured reserve Saturday. … Lassiter left in the third quarter with a concussion.

HERBERT HAS PASSING AND RUSHING TDS AS CHARGERS WIN 3 STRAIGHT
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The combination of steady play by Justin Herbert and a strong defense has given the Los Angeles Chargers their best start in six years.
Herbert threw for a touchdown and ran for one, and the Chargers had seven sacks in their third straight victory, 27-17 over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
The Chargers are 6-3 — their best start since going 7-2 in 2018 — and have won four of five to surpass last season’s victory total.
“A complete, total team win. When you look at the offense, the drives that we put together … tough, gritty type of conversions on third down and fourth down,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “They’re playing lights out on the defensive side. And then special teams, another big return by our punt return unit.”
Herbert completed 14 of 18 passes for 164 yards and had 32 yards rushing. He is the seventh quarterback since the NFL-AFL merger, and the first since Philip Rivers in 2018, to have a passer rating of at least 90 in each of the first nine games of the season.
The defense — which is allowing a league-low 13.1 points per game — is the fourth since 1990 and the first since the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs to allow 20 or fewer points in each of its first nine games.
“Rush and coverage. We have some of the best rushers in the league and that allows us to make plays,” safety Derwin James said.
The Titans (2-7) came in with the NFL’s top-ranked defense overall and against the pass but forced Los Angeles to go three-and-out only twice in nine possessions.
Calvin Ridley scored both of Tennessee’s touchdowns and had five catches for 84 yards. Will Levis, who missed the last three games with a shoulder injury, was 18 of 23 for 175 yards, but the sacks limited his effectiveness.
“It was a nice start. It was cool to get the ball downfield and get that shot dialed up, something we’ve been waiting on,” Levis said. “Second half, I think for me personally, a couple situations where I could have just got the ball out of my hands earlier, help the line with pressure.”
Herbert gave the Chargers a 13-7 lead with 1:55 remaining in the first half on a 4-yard run off right tackle out of the shotgun formation on fourth-and-1.
“I thought we did a great job from start to the end being able to move the ball, run the ball, pass the ball however we needed to move it,” Herbert said. “I thought the guys up front did an incredible job and to be able to put that together against a very good opponent, it means a lot to me.”
The game turned with 21 seconds remaining in the first half. The Titans appeared to tie it at 13 when Roger McCreary ran back Herbert’s fumble 20 yards into the end zone. After a replay review, the call was changed to an incomplete pass because officials determined Herbert’s arm was going forward, leaving Titans coach Brian Callahan incensed.
Callahan said officials initially told him the call was going to stand before they and the replay center in New York took another look.
“I’ll let you guys decide what you think the call should have been, but I don’t want to lose any money,” he said.
Harbaugh and Herbert said the reversal was huge.
“To be able to go to halftime with the lead and to avoid a play like that is big time,” Herbert said.
And then the Chargers took control in the second half.
Herbert extended the lead to 20-10 with three minutes to go in the third quarter on a 16-yard pass to Quentin Johnston in the right corner of the end zone.
Hassan Haskins, who spent two seasons with Tennessee, extended the advantage to 17 points with a 1-yard dive up the middle. That capped an 11-play, 95-yard drive that ate up seven minutes.
“It was just steady. It’s like death by a thousand paper cuts when you play that way, and we kind of gave up just enough yards every time on a 95-yard drive to allow them to go punch it in for seven when we had them backed up on the 5,” Callahan said.
Ridley’s day
The Chargers got a 21-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker on their opening possession before the Titans answered with Levis’ 41-yard strike to Ridley.
Levis faked a handoff to Tony Pollard and had plenty of time in the pocket. Ridley caught it at the Chargers 6 and had a couple yards of separation on defensive back Ja’Sir Taylor before scoring his second touchdown this season.
It was the first time the Chargers allowed points on an opening drive this season.
Ridley also caught a 15-yard TD in the left corner of the end zone late in the fourth quarter.
Going in reverse
The Titans drove to the Chargers 19 midway through the second quarter up 7-6 and appeared to be on the verge of adding to their lead when facemask and false start penalties pushed them back.
Nick Folk was wide right from 49 yards, snapping a streak of 20 straight made field goals dating to last season.
Injuries
Titans: CB L’Jarius Sneed (quadriceps) missed a fourth straight game.
Chargers: OG Trey Pipkins III (ankle) was inactive. Jamaree Salyer got the start at right guard. CB Kristian Fulton missed his second straight game.

Titans: Host Minnesota next Sunday.
Chargers: Host Cincinnati next Sunday night.
BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE BY KYLER MURRAY LEADS CARDINALS OVER JETS FOR 4TH STRAIGHT VICTORY
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kyler Murray threw for 266 yards and a touchdown and also ran for two scores and the Arizona Cardinals won their fourth straight game by racing to a big lead and easily handling the New York Jets 31-6 on Sunday.
The Cardinals (6-4) scored touchdowns on four of their first five drives and never trailed.
Murray completed 22 of 24 passes — including a franchise-record 17 in a row during one stretch — spreading the ball around to James Conner, Trey McBride, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson. The Cardinals quarterback also ran for 21 yards.
Conner had five catches for 80 yards. Harrison caught the sixth touchdown pass of his rookie season. The Cardinals’ defense didn’t allow a touchdown for the third straight home game.
New York (3-7) has lost six of its last seven, failing to build off the momentum of last week’s win over the Texans. Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 35 passes for 151 yards. Breece Hall ran for 52 yards.
Arizona rolled to a 24-6 lead by halftime after Chad Ryland made a 37-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. It capped a dominant two quarters that saw the Cardinals have a 239-85 advantage in total yards.
Murray completed 17 of 19 passes for 199 yards before the break.
New York (3-7) had a chance to get back into it early in the third quarter, but the Cardinals put together a goal-line stand, forcing a fumble by Rodgers on fourth down to end the threat.
Arizona iced its win on the ensuing drive, with Murray tip-toeing through the Jets’ defense for a spectacular 12-yard run and a 31-6 lead. It capped an efficient 10-play, 88-yard drive.
The Cardinals took a 7-0 lead on the opening drive when Conner ran for a 1-yard touchdown. Two plays earlier, the running back caught a short pass and ran for 44 yards to get down to the 1.
Murray ran for a 1-yard touchdown for a 14-3 lead with 2:54 left in the first quarter.
Murray’s third TD drive was arguably his most impressive. The quarterback got absolutely drilled by Jets linebacker Quincy Williams on a first-and-10 play at the Jets 22 — a hit so hard that Murray’s helmet flew several yards backward.
Murray laughed off the frightening moment before making a big first down throw to McBride and then finding Harrison on a fade route in the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown, making it 21-6 midway through the second quarter.
New York had to settle for two field goals in the first half. Spencer Shrader connected from 25 and 45 yards in his Jets debut.
Injuries
Jets: LB CJ Mosley (neck) was among the team’s five inactives. … DB Brandin Echols left with a concussion. … LT Tyron Smith (neck) left in the first half.
Cardinals: Starting S Jalen Thompson (ankle) missed his first game of the season. He was one of six inactives.

Cardinals: Enter their bye week and won’t play again until Nov. 24 on the road against the Seahawks.
“HEAD DOWN, THEN BOOT IT!”: EDDY PIÑEIRO’S GAME WINNER FOR PANTHERS, HIMSELF, AND HIS DAD
MUNICH, Germany— Sam Franklin Jr.’s voice can cut through a lot of noise. And on Sunday night in Munich—with the Panthers and Giants heading to overtime, a crowd of 70,132 belting out the final notes of “Sweet Caroline” and the Carolina sideline trying to keep a lid on the anticipation that was palpably building since Josey Jewell recovered a fumble, his second turnover of the day, the latter one in overtime, giving the Panthers the ball back at the Giants 23-yard line—there was a lot of noise.
Isolated by his kicking net, tucked at the end of the bench near the 20-yard line, Eddy Piñeiro, is used to entering his bubble before a big kick. But when Franklin skipped over, just before the kicker went out for the game winning kick, his voice penetrated.
“Hey, believe with all your heart,” Franklin yelled at Piñeiro. “Head down, then boot it!”
After Franklin’s message got through though, Piñeiro was back in his bubble.
“Doing the same thing I always do, just stay calm, take a couple of deep breaths and then when I go out there just disconnect, point to the sky like I always do and ask God to give me, give me peace,” Piñeiro said of the moments leading up to his job on the field.
The Giants got the ball first in overtime, tied at 17-all, and with the benefit of having won the coin toss. A touchdown on their drive would’ve won and ended the game. Instead, on the first play of overtime, A’Shawn Robinson punched out a fumble that Jewell recovered.
“I did not expect that,” Piñeiro admitted. “When I saw that, I just started instantly kicking balls into the net, just getting warm, stay ready for the opportunity to come.”
The Panthers ran three plays, all short Chuba Hubbard runs, giving Piñeiro time to warm up his leg, get the requisite pep talk from Franklin and receive none—per request—from coach Dave Canales.
Asked if he said anything to his kicker before he ran out for the game-winning kick, Canales laughed, “Absolutely not!”
“I just let Eddy be Eddy. He went out there, he had his process, he went through it just like he would on any other kick. And we always talk about, the bigger the moment, the smaller the focus.”
Piñeiro’s focus was admittedly small on Sunday night in Munich. On not only the 36-yard field goal to give the Panthers the 20-17 win, but on the man he wanted to honor with said kick there in the FC Bayern’s Allianz Arena.
“Since I was a little kid, I’ve always wanted to be a professional soccer player, but it’s mostly more for my dad,” Piñeiro shared after the win. “My dad had a chance to come to Germany (and play) and he didn’t take it because he had me and my sister. So, it was a dream for him, and I was dedicated for him.”
Piñerio’s father wasn’t able to make the trip to Munich. He had a serious heart attack a couple of weeks ago, causing Piñeiro to miss a day of practice to go be with the family in a moment of fear His father is doing better and recovering, but the travel was too much at this point.
So there on the field, with a raucous crowd ready to explode either way, Piñeiro kept his focus small, the noise tuned out and thought of only the kick and his dad.
When the game winner sailed right down the middle, everything got loud again. Xavier Woods sprinted off the sideline, locked in on his kicker. Feleipe Franks got to him first though, practically carrying his teammate down the field in celebration. They all had to keep up with Piñeiro though, who was sprinting toward the opposite end zone.
It looked to the outsider like a soccer celebration. But Piñeiro was still keeping his focus small and had one person in mind.
“I was just running down to see my mom,” Piñeiro admitted. “It was awesome too, I just wanted to point at her and tell her, you know, we’re here; we’re together and we did it and it was, it was an awesome moment.”

Jonathan Kuminga scored 20 points, De’Anthony Melton had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Andrew Wiggins added 18 points for the Warriors.
Golden State led by 30 late in the third quarter before the Thunder stormed back. A steal and dunk by Alex Caruso cut Golden State’s lead to six with 4:46 left before the Warriors regained control.

Jovic, who had 15 points and seven rebounds in his first game off the bench this season, drove to the rim with four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert subbed out. Jovic went to the line to give the Heat their first lead since 63-61.
Mike Conley’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was short and finished another harried possession by the Timberwolves, whose three-game winning streak ended. Jaden McDaniels gave them the lead with a putback of Conley’s miss with nine seconds left.
Tyler Herro had 26 points for the Heat, who played without star Jimmy Butler.
Anthony Edwards scored 22 points on 8-for-24 shooting for the Wolves, who trailed by 12 points after a 3-for-15 start from 3-point range. They closed the gap to 52-51 at the break with their only solid stretch on offense.

TRUEX FINISHES 17TH IN FINAL FULL-TIME CUP SERIES RACE
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. got a nice surprise when his fellow drivers gave him a standing ovation during the prerace meeting Sunday before the NASCAR Cup Series finale.
Once on the track, the 44-year-old driver from New Jersey took time to thank his team for all the memories before his final race as a full-time Cup driver.
“Thanks for sticking out all the way to the end here,” Truex said on the radio, his voice breaking at the end. “Hopefully we can go out on top. Appreciate all your hard work and dedication with all the things we’ve done over the years. It’s meant a lot.”
Truex didn’t get his wish.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver led 10 laps after starting on the pole, but got caught in a shuffle of pit stops and cautions, costing him a chance to compete for one final win.
Truex finished 17th at Phoenix Raceway after all the hoopla — well behind winner Joey Logano — earning post-race handshakes and praise from Basketball Hall of Famer and 23XI Racing owner Michael Jordan, along with four-time Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon.
Truex had a stellar career as a full-time driver, winning the 2017 Cup Series championship and 34 career victories in a NASCAR career that started in 2004. He also won two Xfinity Series championships.
Truex is expected to race in next year’s Daytona 500 and has talked to team owner Joe Gibbs about running a few Xfinity races.
“It means a lot to have earned that respect over the years,” Truex said. “Going forward, do a little bit of racing just for fun and hopefully it’s not as stressful as today.”
Hamlin and FedEx
It appears Denny Hamlin’s 20-year run with FedEx as a sponsor is coming to an end.
Hamlin thanked FedEx in a social media post before Sunday’s race and the shipping company followed with one of its own.
“What a ride it’s been!,” FedEx posted on X. Denny and the entire Joe Gibbs team, it’s been an incredible 20 years of racing with the best. #TeamFedEx will always be cheering you on.”
FedEx has been a sponsor of Joe Gibbs Racing since 2005, but has pulled back in recent years. After sponsoring all of Hamlin’s car for all 36 races in 2020, FedEx was the primary sponsor in 14 points races this year.
Pace car crash
Ty Gibbs had the first official crash of Sunday’s race, climbing up into the outside wall on lap 2.
The second didn’t knock any of the competitors out, but it did delay the race.
Leading the field back to green after the first stage caution, the pace car driver caused chaos with a late decision to turn into pit road. The pace car cut across the front two cars, slid into the barrels protecting the end of the pit road wall and sent sand flying onto the track, leading to a red flag.
The mishap delayed the race for several minutes, but garnered a chuckle from Jordan in his 23XI Racing box on pit road.
The pace car suffered damage to the rear right side and had to be replaced by a backup car.
Odds and ends
Kyle Busch’s record of winning a Cup Series race in 19 straight seasons came down to one last race. Busch never really had a chance to extend his streak. He started 25th and had a hard time making up ground, finishing 21st in failing to win for the first time in his career in a Cup Series that included two championships. … The Cup Series finale was a relatively clean race, with just two cautions caused by accidents. Ty Gibbs was among the few unlucky drivers, crashing hard into the wall on the second lap. “We’ve been really hard on the track there all week and I think I just caught it at a bad angle, and it just took off from me,” he said. “I had no control there. It was a really, really big hit though.” … Carson Hocevar was named the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series rookie of the year after earning six top-10s and one top-five finish during his first full season in the No. 77 car. … Chevrolet won the NASCAR Cup Series manufacturers championship.

COLTS UNABLE TO MOUNT COMEBACK AGAINST BILLS IN WEEK 10 LOSS
COLTS.COM
In what began as a back-and-forth affair, the Colts were unable to find momentum to mount a second-half comeback against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, losing 30-20 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The beginning of the game was dismal for the Colts, with limited cheers from the crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium. Quarterback Joe Flacco threw two interceptions on the team’s first two possessions of the game – the first one turned into a pick-six and the second kickstarted a Bills drive that ended in a field goal, quickly putting them up 10-0.
Running back Jonathan Taylor elicited the loudest cheers of the first quarter, and among the loudest all game, with a 59-yard run to bring the Colts to the Bills’ nine-yard line. The Colts had to settle for a field goal to get points on the board, though, and trailed 10-3 at the end of the first quarter.
But right before the clock ran down, linebacker Zaire Franklin had a crucial tackle that forced the Bills to turn the ball over on downs. The Colts then went on an 11-play, 72-yard drive featuring an 18-yard pass to wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Alec Pierce. It was running back Tyler Goodson, though, who – on his birthday – caught the touchdown pass to tie the game.
And as soon as the Bills got the ball back, linebacker E.J. Speed intercepted the first pass of the possession to bring the Colts offense back onto the field at Buffalo’s 33-yard line. The interception was Speed’s first of his career, and proved to be a crucial one as the Colts went on to score a field goal and take a 13-10 lead.
The Bills, however, scored on back-to-back drives – a touchdown and a field goal – to close out the half with a 20-13 lead.
At halftime, Taylor had 107 rushing yards on 16 carries; he had 103 yards on 14 carries with seven minutes left in the second quarter.
The two teams traded possessions in the third quarter, and while the Colts’ defense continued to pressure the Bills – cornerback Kenny Moore II had a stellar interception and Speed had a crucial pass breakup on third down – they couldn’t put any more points on the board, and the score remained 20-13.
The Bills were able to put up three more points with a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it a two-score game with 10 minutes and 58 seconds left in the game. Buffalo continued to dominate time of possession as the quarter went on, forcing another Flacco interception (his third of the game) and methodically marching down the field.
A 13-play, 84-yard drive that took up 6 minutes and 42 seconds extended the Bills’ lead to 30-13 with just over three minutes remaining. Flacco connected with Pierce in the end zone for the wide receiver’s fourth touchdown of the season, but with just two seconds remaining on the clock, the Colts were out of time, losing 30-20 in their first multi-possession loss of the season.

INDIANA PACERS BASKETBALL
GAME REWIND: PACERS 132, KNICKS 121
An injury riddled Pacers team stepped up to face a strong New York roster on Sunday afternoon and came out on top, 132-121, behind a combined 73 points from Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin.
Coach Rick Carlisle announced pregame that Indiana (5-5) would be without Aaron Nesmith and Andrew Nembhard for at least two weeks, likely extending into December. Obi Toppin is also dealing with injury – a sprained ankle – and couldn’t suit up against New York (4-5). With two starters sidelined and multiple injuries to their bench, Mathurin is taking advantage.
Mathurin averaged just over 21 points per game over Indiana’s last five games, and kept that pace through the first half of Sunday’s game. He drained three of his four 3-point attempts on his way to an 11-point first quarter. Haliburton tallied five first quarter assists as the Pacers finished the first frame up three, 29-26.
“I just get what the defense gives me,” Mathurin said. “And I shoot the ball with confidence.”
Indiana’s defense slipped early in the second quarter as the Knicks jumped out to a seven-point lead, but the Pacers recovered behind Mathurin’s hot hand. Mathurin drilled another two 3-point shots, totaling six makes from downtown in the first half. He entered the locker room at the break with 21 points and four rebounds.
Haliburton’s first half was strong for Indiana as he bolstered Mathurin’s scoring outburst with playmaking. He dished out six first half assists along with his 14 points, but the Pacers trailed at halftime, 61-58.
New York punched in the second half as they carried a burst of momentum into a 10-point lead early in the frame. Consecutive 3-pointers from Myles Turner, and gritty and-one opportunities from Haliburton and Mathurin kept Indiana within striking distance. Jarace Walker went as his veterans did, knocking down back to back 3-pointers to push the Pacers in front by two points with four minutes to play in the third.
Indiana stepped into an aggressive rhythm early in the fourth as Mathurin continued his run of efficient scoring. He hit a stepback 3-pointer and finished at the rim through contact on back to back possessions, giving Indiana a five point lead with just over eight minutes remaining.
With just under five minutes to play, Turner dropped in his own pair of 3-pointers on consecutive possessions as the Pacers’ lead grew to seven. Indiana made eight 3-pointers in the final quarter, and 21 overall as they shot their way to a 45.7 percent shooting night from long range.
The defensive intensity from Indiana was evident through the fourth quarter, including an outstanding Mathurin play to block a Miles McBride layup attempt and win back possession of the ball for the Pacers. They held New York to 27 points in the final quarter.
“Our determination defensively is always going to lead to really good momentum for us offensively,” Carlisle said postgame.
Mathurin’s intensity translated into a career night – he posted a new career high in points with 38. His 38 points came on just 18 shot attempts, and he had a 72 percent night from the field. Haliburton finished with 35 points and 14 assists for the Pacers, and Turner recorded 26 points and four rebounds.
“Tyrese was amazing in this game,” Carlisle said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him more determined in a regular season game than this one today. Benn Mathurin was absolutely breathtaking. Efficient, tough physically.”
Indiana’s backcourt duo helped the Pacers to their highest point total in a quarter this season as they led the Blue and Gold to a 40-point fourth quarter.
The Pacers win puts them back at 5-5 on the season, and they’ll look to prepare for Wednesday as they travel to Orlando for another matchup with the Magic.
Inside the Numbers
Indiana made 21 3-pointers to New York’s seven.
Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin each shot over 60 percent from the field.
The Pacers’ 74 second half points are the most they’ve scored in a half this season. Their 40 points in the fourth quarter are the most they’ve scored in a single quarter this season.
You Can Quote Me on That
“A look in the eyes…There are just times when great players just have a look in their eye that they are determined not only to have a great individual game, but to highly impact the game for themselves and their teammates.” – Carlisle on Haliburton
“He’s just doing what he does. Honestly, it’s not a surprise to anybody in the locker room. I think he’s just playing the right way, and it’s part of the growth of him as a player.” – Tyrese Haliburton on Bennedict Mathurin’s recent play
“Ty was aggressive. I just like when he plays that way. Just being aggressive. He has a great touch around the rim. I think just continuing to use that, once you see the ball go in a couple times, the three (point shot), everything just gets bigger and bigger.” – Siakam on Haliburton’s performance
Stat of the Night
Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin scored a combined 73 points on 66.7 percent shooting.
Noteworthy
This is the first time that both Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin have scored over 30 points in the same game. It is also the first time two Pacers have scored 35+ in the same game during the regular season.

MGBAKO, BALLO AND RENEAU LEAD NO. 17 INDIANA IN 90-55 ROUT OF EASTERN ILLINOIS
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Mackenzie Mgbako scored 18 points, Oumar Ballo and Malik Reneau each had 17 and No. 17 Indiana defeated Eastern Illinois 90-55 on Sunday.
The Hoosiers (2-0) trailed the upset-minded Panthers by five points before going on a 24-2 run early in the second half. Mgbako, Ballo and Reneau combined to make 23 of 32 shots overall and grab 22 rebounds. Indiana outscored Eastern Illinois 54-18 in the second half.
Nakyel Shelton led Eastern Illinois (1-2) with 17 points. The Panthers made five 3-pointers to take a one-point halftime lead but were just 2 of 10 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Takeaways
Eastern Illinois: The Panthers looked like an underdog capable of an upset for about 23 minutes, then disappeared in a disastrous second-half stretch. The collapse had the visitors looking more like the team that lost by 45 at No. 24 Illinois in the season opener.
Indiana: Another double-digit win over an outmanned midmajor program was far from encouraging when considering the Hoosiers struggled to defend the 3-point line early and didn’t take control of this game until a few minutes into the second half. Far more is expected.
Key moment
Down five early in the second half, Indiana went on a 11-0 run, with Mgbako and Reneau combining for nine of those points, including a pair of dunks.
Key stat
In Indiana’s 24-2 run, the Hoosiers made 9 of 14 shots while the Panthers managed only one basket with 10 missed shots.
Up next
The Panthers visit Northwestern on Friday and the Hoosiers host South Carolina on Saturday.

DOMINKO QUALIFIES FOR NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES WITH NAD: DOMINKO WINS ITA CONFERENCE MASTERS SINGLES TITLE
ROME, Ga. – Junior Sebastian Dominko had a very strong showing this week winning the ITA Conference Masters singles title without dropping a set and being runner up in doubles alongside freshman Peter Nad. The inaugural ITA Conference Masters was held in Rome, Georgia this week as the final qualifying event for the NCAA individual championships. One player from each of the division I conferences was selected to participate.
Dominko entered the week as the representative for the Atlantic Coast Conference and the overall #1 seed in the singles draw at the ITA Conference Masters. He would receive a bye in the opening round before taking on the selection for the Big Ten Conference, Niels Hoffman of Southern California. Dominko would take the opening round by a 6-3, 6-4 score to advance where he would face the Patriot League player selection, Amar Tahirovic. The Irish junior took care of business to win 6-3, 6-2 and not only advance to the semifinals of the event but he also clinched a birth into the NCAA Individual Singles Championships.
In the semifinals, he would face the top player from the Georgia lineup and the SEC selection, Thomas Paulsell, who came into the fall ranked #14 in college tennis. Dominko would win the first set 6-4 before running away with the second set 6-2 and find himself in the championship match. In the title match, he would face Tiago Silva of Pacific and the West Coast Conference. On a crisp and overcast Sunday morning, Dominko would take the first set 6-3 for the third time in the tournament and then seal the title with a 6-4 second set win.
Dominko was pulling double duty this week as he and teammate Peter Nad were the representatives for the ACC in the doubles tournament. The duo were the #2 overall seeds and received bye before running through teams from Portland, UNC Wilmington and UNC Charlotte en route to the finals. But the run would end in the championship at the hands of the #1 ranked team in the country from Mississippi State in two tight sets, 7-5, 7-6(4). By virtue of making the finals though, the duo qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships.
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be held this fall in Waco, Texas from November 19th-24th. Dominko has now qualified for both singles and doubles every year in college so far, marking this the 5th and 6th appearances in the NCAA individual tournament. Peter Nad, in his first semester in college, will make his first postseason appearance alongside Dominko.

BUFFALO PREVIEW
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s basketball team will look to go 2-0 on the young season when the Buffalo Bulls roll into town on Monday, Nov. 11. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion, with tickets still available for purchase on FightingIrish.com. Early arriving fans will receive a red, white, and navy blue pom pom with God, Country, Notre Dame on the handle!
The game is also our Veterans Day Donation Drive – Help support our local veterans by bringing in items to be donated to Miller Veterans Center for the Homeless.
FEELING BULLISH
Notre Dame has completed 121 seasons in its program history and yet on Monday night, they’ll play Buffalo for the very first time. The Bulls are off to a 2-0 start after a buzzer-beater against Old Dominion, followed by a victory over Fredonia. In both games Buffalo scored over 80 points.
In the win over Fredonia, Tyson Dunn recorded the program’s fourth triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, 14 assists. Dunn is averaging 19.0 points through two games, while the Bulls are led by Ryan Sabol’s 19.5 ppg.
Irish fans will see a familiar face on the Buffalo bench in former ND assistant, now Bulls Associate Head Coach Hamlet Tibbs.
GAME WON
Basketball was officially back in Purcell Pavilion and Notre Dame showed out in their 2024-25 debut, defeating Stonehill, 89-60. The Irish shot 50.8 percent from the field and 47.8 percent from three-point range.
The preseason talk of Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry being one of the best young backcourts in the ACC was on display. Each recorded a game-high 18 points. Burton also supplied a team-high five assists. Graduate guard Matt Allocco joined them in double figures with 10 points. Furthermore, Kebba Njie finished one point shy of what would have been his first career double-double, tallying nine points and 10 rebounds. The 10 boards were one shy of his career best.
TRENDING
With the season-opening victory, the Irish moved up four spots in KenPom to No. 65.
The preseason focus was on offense and pace and between the exhibition and season opener, the Irish have totaled 180 points.
Notre Dame grabbed 50 rebounds against Stonehill, marking their highest total since 54 boards vs. High Point on Nov. 16, 2021.
Braeden Shrewsberry was 4-for-5 from three in the season opener. He drained 78 as a freshman, including a program record 55 in ACC play.
Notre Dame made 11 three’s against Stonehill, shooting 47.8 percent from beyond the arc. The latter ranks 10th in the country.
A victory on Monday night would mean that Coach Shrewsberry’s squad will have won six straight on their home court, dating back to their four-win homestand that ended last season (Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Clemson).
PRESEASON ACCOLADES FOR BURTON
Point guard Markus Burton looks to continue his ascent in collegiate basketball for his sophomore season. He went from winning Mr. Indiana Basketball as a high school senior to stepping on his home court in Purcell Pavilion and making an immediate impact with the Irish. He won the 2024 ACC Freshman of the Year Award (the first ND player to do so) and also took home Third Team All-ACC honors.
Before the 2024-25 season has officially gotten underway, Burton has collected more awards/recognition. First, the ACC named him a Preseason First Team selection. Burton’s 17.5 ppg is the third highest returning scoring average in the ACC behind North Carolina’s RJ Davis (21.2) and Wake Forest’s Hunter Sallis (18.0 ppg).
Next, it was the Naismith Starting 5 – Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Top 20 Preseason Watch List. This prestigious award honors the best point guards in men’s college basketball and is presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame. Burton is the first Irish point guard to be named to the Bob Cousy Top-20 Preseason Watch List since Matt Farrell (2017-18 Watch List).
Shortly after, ESPN.com announced its top-100 players ahead of the 2024-25 season. Burton landed at No. 40. They stated: “(Burton) averaged 17.5 PPG as a freshman, finishing with 20 points or more in 11 games. If he can become a consistent threat from the 3-point line (30%), the All-ACC third team pick could mature into one of the expanded conference’s best players.”
Last but not least, the Naismith Trophy added Burton to their College Player of the Year Watch List. A total of 50 players were named to the preseason list.
SOMETHING BREWING IN SOUTH BEND
Though we can’t talk specifics until ink hits the paper on Wednesday, it’s hard not to notice the momentum that Coach Shrews is building in South Bend. He talked how in year one he was setting the foundation and the ‘right culture.’ Heading into year two, Coach Shrews is on an absolute heater on the recruiting trail.
Notre Dame currently has four verbals from one five-star and three four-star players. The five-star recruit would be the highest signee in program history (in the modern era with rankings), ranked No. 10 from ESPN. The Irish recruiting class is ranked in the top-six by 247 Sports, Rivals and ON3.
WAKE UP THE ECHOES LIVE ON THURSDAY, NOV. 14
Wake Up The Echoes, which is the official podcast show for Coach Freeman, Ivey and Shrewsberry, is hitting the road for a special on location recording at Brothers Bar & Grill this Thursday. It will be a celebration of basketball season getting underway with both Coach Shrews and Ivey slated to be on the show. In addition, both Markus Burton and Hannah Hildago will have segments on the show as well.
FROM LEAST TO MOST
When Coach Shrewsberry took over the Notre Dame job, he had to start at the ground-level. In fact, Notre Dame only returned 35 points at this point last year, which equated to 1.6% of scoring returning. That number ranked in the bottom five of Division-I schools. However, this year is quite a different story.
The Irish return the most scoring in the ACC by a landslide. With a solid young core of seven returnees (Markus Burton, Braeden Shrewsberry, Tae Davis, Julian Roper II, J.R. Konieczny, Kebba Njie, Logan Imes), Notre Dame returns 85.6 percent of its scoring. The next highest is Wake Forest at 59.8 percent.
In addition, the Irish return the third highest percentage of minutes in the country at 83.9 percent. Navy (91.3) and Wofford (84.3) hold the top two spots.
IRISH LOOK TO DEFY EXPECTATIONS AGAIN
Last year, Notre Dame was projected to finish dead last in the conference. The Coach Shrewsberry led squad came together and ultimately doubled its ACC win total from the 2022-23 season, finishing 7-13 in league play to earn the 12-seed in the conference tourney. Coach Shrewsberry received several votes for ACC Coach of the Year.
This year, the Irish are picked to finish tenth in the ACC and look to defy expectations again.
GREEN JERSEY SERIES
When you play over 30 games in a season, you got to wear the Irish greens more than once. Announced via the @NDMBB account on social, the program has picked four ACC games to wear the greens at home:
– Dec. 7 vs. Syracuse – ACC Opener
– Jan. 4 vs. UNC – Irish Wear Green
– Feb. 8 vs. Virginia Tech – 574 Day
– Feb. 22 vs. Pitt – Fan Appreciation
BEST YOUNG BACKCOURT IN THE ACC
Freshman guards Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry showed no fear in the first year in the ACC. Burton averaged 17.5 points both on the season and in league play, while Shrewsberry was the lone other Irish to finish in double figures, averaging 10.2 points on the year and 11.3 points in ACC play.
With that said, Burton and Shrewsberry became the 9th ACC freshmen duo in league history to rank No. 1 and No. 2 for their team in scoring, proving the future is bright in South Bend.
There is only one scoring duo in the ACC that returns a higher combined number than Burton’s and Shrewsberry’s 27.7 ppg and that’s Wake Forest’s Hunter Sallis and Cameron HIldreth. That duo return a combined 31.8 ppg.
Burton and Shrewsberry also proved they aren’t afraid of a hostile environment. In true road games, Burton and Shrewsberry averaged 16.3 points and 12.8 points, respectively.
Lastly, don’t forget that this duo went off in the nation’s capital for the first round of the ACC Tournament in the win over Georgia Tech. Shrewsberry scored a team-high 23 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. Four of Shrewsberry’s threes came in the second half. It marked his third game of 20+ that season. Next, Burton followed right behind with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Burton also tied his season high in assists with eight.
COACH SHREWS LOOKS TO RECREATE YEAR TWO MAGIC
The rebuild at Notre Dame is obviously different from the one at Penn State, but let’s look at the year one to year two improvement that Coach Shrews accomplished in Happy Valley.
After a 14-17 first season, Shrewsberry produced a 23-14 mark in 2022-23, just the 12th 20-win season in the 127-year history of Penn State basketball. The Nittany Lions then made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2011.
Statistically speaking, the 2022-23 squad set the B1G and Penn State single-season team record for three-pointers made in a season with 385. The Nittany Lions compiled a total of five top-15 national statistical rankings.

NO. 6 IRISH BLOW OUT BOILERS, 102-58
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — No. 6 Notre Dame (2-0) reached the century mark for the second consecutive game on Sunday, downing in-state rival Purdue (1-2), 102-58.
Hannah Hidalgo led the scoring efforts with 28 points, and three of her teammates joined her in double-figures — Liatu King (18), Olivia Miles (17) and Sonia Citron (14), who was making her season debut after missing the first game with an injury.
The opening quarter was one of runs, as the Irish went up 9-0 to start, and Purdue missed its first six shots. Notre Dame later added a 15-2 run, and Purdue did not score from the floor after the 4:36 mark. The Boilermakers had just two field goals in the first quarter and were in a 28-7 hole.
The Irish offense stalled a bit in Q2, forcing a timeout at 2:52. From that point, Notre Dame went on a 9-0 run to end the half. King had 12 rebounds at the break, already topping her totals from the exhibition and opener.
King opened the second half with a jump shot, securing the double-double stat line of 10 points and 12 boards. Hot hands continued for the visitors, who shot 70.6 percent from the floor in the third quarter.
Notre Dame outscored Purdue by 12 points in both the third and fourth quarters and led by as much as 47 midway through the fourth quarter. Miles closed down the third with a 55-foot shot, marking the first time an Irish player hit a shot from half court or beyond since Arike Ogunbowale did so in March 2018.
Purdue’s physicality limited assists in the first half, but Notre Dame started to overcome that obstacle toward the end of the game and finished with 13 assists. Freshman Kate Koval led the Irish with 4 and added 4 blocks and 10 rebounds, her first double-digit rebound game of her young career. Hidalgo led the team with 6 steals, and King amassed 15 total rebounds.
The Irish are at home for their next contest, hosting Sun Belt preseason favorites JMU at Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday night. The game can be streamed on ACCNX and tips off at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Roger Powell Jr.: Roger Powell Jr. (8-26) is in his second season as the head coach of the Valpo men’s basketball program. After helping guide Gonzaga to a 121-13 record during his four seasons as an assistant coach, Powell returned to Valpo, where he was part of head coach Bryce Drew’s staff from 2011-2016 and led the team to 124 wins in five seasons, including a program-record 30 victories and a National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title game appearance in 2015-16. He was part of head coach Mark Few’s Gonzaga staff as the Bulldogs reached the 2021 national championship game after winning their first 31 games of the season. During Powell’s first season on staff in 2019-20, Gonzaga was 31-2 at the time the NCAA college basketball season was halted due to COVID-19. The Bulldogs reached the Sweet Sixteen in each of his final three seasons on staff, including two Elite Eight appearances and the aforementioned trip to the 2021 national title game. Prior to his arrival at Gonzaga, Powell served as the associate head coach at Vanderbilt University under Bryce Drew from 2016-2019. During his stint as an assistant at Valpo, he was part of four Horizon League regular-season championships in a five-year period while also leading the 2012-13 and 2014-15 squads to Horizon League tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. A product of Joliet West High School and a native of Joliet, Ill., Powell capped a prolific collegiate playing career at Illinois with a national title game appearance in 2005 before going on to a successful professional playing career.
Series Notes: Valpo and Cleveland State have matched up 50 times in a series that dates back to 1979-80 with the Vikings owning a 30-20 advantage. This marks the first time the two teams have clashed since Valpo departed the Horizon League for the Missouri Valley Conference following the 2016-17 season. The Beacons own a seven-game head-to-head winning streak dating back to March 1, 2014. Valpo won all seven matchups over its final three Horizon League seasons including a 78-57 win in the most recent showdown on Feb. 9, 2017 at the ARC. Not only did the two teams share a decade together in the Horizon League, but they were both part of the Mid-Continent Conference from the conference’s formation in 1982 to Cleveland State’s departure for the Horizon League in 1994.
Mega Margin
Valpo defeated Concordia Ann Arbor 111-46 on Nov. 8, with the 65-point margin of victory representing the third largest in program history. This was Valpo’s most lopsided win since beating IU South Bend by 70 (111-41) on Nov. 28, 2005. The program record for margin of victory is 79 in a 132-53 win over Western Ontario on Dec. 5, 1964.
The 111 points were Valpo’s most since Nov. 6, 2018, a 121-65 win over Concordia Chicago. This was the fifth time in the last quarter century that Valpo has scored upward of 110 points.
Valpo shot 58.2 percent for the game, the team’s highest field-goal percentage since 58.3 on March 3, 2022 against Evansville.
The Beacons outrebounded the Cardinals 62-28. The +34-rebounding margin was Valpo’s largest on record. The team’s last time over +30 in the rebounding margin was +31 on Nov. 21, 2017 vs. Samford. Valpo outrebounded Purdue Northwest by 32 on Nov. 18, 2010.
The Beacons became just the 11th team nationally this season to win by 65 points or more and the 11th team nationally this year with a rebounding margin of +34 or better.
The 46 points were the fewest by a Valpo opponent since Judson’s 45 on Dec. 6, 2020.
Other Notes Wrapping Up Nov. 8: Valpo 111, Concordia Ann Arbor 46
Redshirt freshman Lucas Scroggins enjoyed a perfect night from the floor, knocking down all six of his field-goal attempts while finishing with 12 points and five rebounds. He became the first Valpo player to go perfect from the field with at least six attempts since Donovan Clay on Dec. 30, 2019 vs. Loyola Chicago.
Cooper Schwieger posted his third career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. He usurped his previous career high on the glass of 13 that came on Jan. 14, 2024 at Illinois State.
Schwieger added four blocks, the most by a Valpo player since Jaxon Edwards and Ola Ajiboye had four apiece on Nov. 14, 2023. Schwieger became the first Valpo player to record four blocks in a double-double since Vashil Fernandez (13 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks) on Jan. 16, 2016 vs. Green Bay.
Devon Ellis had a team-high 16 points to go along with nine boards. Redshirt sophomore Isaiah Shaw tallied 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro had 13 on 5-of-7 and Schmidt added 13 on 5-of-8.
Shaw’s 14 points marked a career high, surpassing his previous best of 13 achieved twice while playing for GCU.
Freshman Justus McNair made it seven Beacons in double figures with 10 points.
ARC Openers
Valpo is in the midst of five straight games at the ARC prior to their first true road game of the season on Nov. 29 at DePaul. This will mark the latest Valpo has played its first true road game since 2008-09 (Dec. 2 at Cleveland State).
The program improved to 19-1 in its last 20 home openers with the Nov. 8 victory over Concordia Ann Arbor with 16 of those home-opening victories coming by double-figure margins.
The Beacons will look to win back-to-back games for the first time since November 2023 vs. Western Illinois and Southern.
DeAveiro Approaching 300
Senior point guard Darius DeAveiro is coming off a junior season where he dished out 170 assists, the third-most in a single season in program history behind only John McIlvain (197, 1982-83) and Ali Berdiel (185, 2003-04).
DeAveiro enters Nov. 12 with a career assist total of 295 that ranks tied for 15th in program history.
DeAveiro is five assists away from becoming the 15th player in program history to get to 300.
He finished last season second in the MVC and 30th nationally with 170 assists and ranked second in the MVC and 36th nationally in assists per game at 5.3.
In addition, the point guard scored in double figures 12 times after not having done so at all over his first two collegiate campaigns. His scoring numbers took a significant junior jump, as outlined below.

Scouting the Vikings
Cleveland State was picked to finish seventh of 11 in the Horizon League preseason poll.
The Vikings are coming off a 77-64 loss at Kansas State on Saturday after opening the season with a road loss at Michigan (101-53) and a home victory over Baldwin Wallace (91-53).
In a three-game sample size, Dylan Arnett is the team’s leading scorer at 12.0 points per game and top rebounder at 7.3 per contest.
The team is under the direction of third-year head coach Daniyal Robinson.
Cleveland State went 21-15 overall and 11-9 in league play last season.
Schmidt Shines in Beacon Debut
A graduate transfer who scored 2,267 points in his four-year NAIA career at Olivet Nazarene, Tyler Schmidt didn’t skip a beat in his Division-I debut. The Valpo native who attended Valpo men’s basketball kids camps as a child scored 17 points in his Beacon debut on Nov. 4 vs. Liberty.
Schmidt shot 7-of-8 from the field, becoming the first Valpo player to post a single-game shooting percentage of .875 or better with at least eight attempts since Nick Robinson went 7-for-8 on Dec. 17, 2020 vs. Purdue Northwest.
He was the first player to accomplish that feat against a Division-I opponent since Donovan Clay went 8-for-8 from the field on Dec. 30, 2019.
Schmidt, who played 24 minutes, also squeezed five rebounds, went 2-of-2 at the free-throw line and drilled his only triple try.
Schmidt became the first Valpo player to shoot .875 from the field on at least eight attempts while also recording eight rebounds since Deion Lavender (8-for-8 FG, eight rebounds) on Nov. 16, 2018 vs. Monmouth. Eight Valpo players have achieved that feat in the last 14 years – Schmidt, Lavender, Derrik Smits, Joe Burton, Alec Peters, Bobby Capobianco, Kevin Van Wijk and Ryan Broekhoff.
Other Notes Wrapping Up Nov. 4: Liberty 83, Valpo 63
Three Beacons finished in double figures in the season opener – all transfers into the program making their Valpo debut – Tyler Schmidt (17), Devon Ellis (13) and Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro (12).
Ellis had his 17th career double-figure scoring output at the D1 level, while De La Cruz Monegro registered his 15th. Schmidt has scored in double figures 98 times at the collegiate level.
De La Cruz Monegro became just the fifth Valpo player to go perfect at the foul-line with a minimum of eight attempts in the last seven years, joining Cooper Schwieger (9-for-9 on Jan. 20, 2024 vs. UIC), Kobe King (8-for-8 on Jan. 17, 2023 vs. UIC), Nick Robinson (8-for-8 on Nov. 12, 2019 at SIUE) and Markus Golder (8-for-8 on March 7, 2019 vs. Indiana State).
Ellis, De La Cruz Monegro and redshirt sophomore Isaiah Shaw all started in their Valpo debuts. Senior Darius DeAveiro made his 38th career start, while sophomore Cooper Schwieger made his 32nd.
Sophomore Kaspar Sepp paced the team in rebounds with eight. He led the squad on the glass four times a year ago. Schwieger corralled six boards.
Valpo went just 2-of-15 from 3-point territory, while Liberty knocked down 10 of its 24 3-point attempts.
The Beacons went 17-of-21 at the free-throw line, shooting 81 percent at the stripe.
The season opener came against a formidable foe as Liberty entered the game with 149 wins over the last six seasons, the eighth most nationally in that span.

FOOTBALL HISTORY
Thorpe Aids in Upset
November 11, 1911 – Cambridge, Massachusetts – A true legend of the game added started writing his football story. As reported by a story on NCAA.com, the Carlisle Indian School of Carlisle, Pa., led by Jim Thorpe, upset the nationally ranked Harvard University football squad by the score of 18-15 as 25,000 in attendance looked on. Thorpe scored every single point for Carlisle in that game, as he punched in a touchdown, kicked an extra point and four field goals. The Indians were coached by Pop Warner in his 10th year as head coach. Carlisle on the season compiled a record of 11–1 , outscored opponents 298 to 49. Walter Camp easily selected Jim Thorpe as a first-team All-American.
A Really Record Setting Game, 13 of them to be exact!
November 11, 1939 – Shreveport, Louisiana – A great story on commdiginews.com tells us of a contest between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Centenary College Centenary Gentlemen. This college football game set more NCAA records than any game in NCAA history: 13. Texas Tech and Centenary played to a 0-0 tie in a torrential downpour. According to the Weather Underground’s historical archives, there was 2.23 inches of rain that fell in Shreveport, Louisiana on game day. Players were getting hurt left and right and the oversized ball used at the time when wet was hard to hang onto. It sounds really odd but according to the article weather was dictating strategy, traditional offenses were ineffective at best, not to mention dangerous so both teams decided that punting the ball away was the best play. Centenary took the opening kick-off and ran it back to the 13. Without hesitation, the Gentlemen punted on their first play from scrimmage. After running just two plays, the Red Raiders followed suit and punted on third down. There were an NCAA-record 77 punts in the game because of this, 39 by Tech and 38 by Centenary. The most amazing fact though was that 67 of 77 occurred on first down! Talk about a record that will never be broken!
Jackets Play it Cold
November 11, 1978 – Colorado Springs, Colorado – Fromtherumbleseat.com tells the tale of the game quite well, that after a lousy previous season and their former coach Ben Martin announcing his retirement, Air Force hired a guy by the name of Bill Parcells to coach the team. You would think that the Falcons would be ready for a big win as was a frigid Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colorado containing temperatures as low as 21°F. Tech was thought to be at a severe disadvantage coming to such chilly conditions from hot Georgia. No one told the Yellow Jackets rushing offense that though as Runningback Eddie Lee Ivery rushes for 356 yards to lead Georgia Tech to a 42-21 victory over Air Force.
By George I thinks he’s got it!
November 11, 1995 – OSU’s Eddie George rushed for a school-record 314 yards on 36 carries and scored three touchdowns to boot as Ohio State routed the University of Illinois 41-3. The website elevenwarriors.com summed up the story nicely. Running against the Illini was supposed to be a difficult task. Coming into the 10th game of the season, Illinois was ranked 10th in the nation in run defense, giving up barely more than 100 yards per game. Linebackers Simeon Rice and Kevin Hardy were All-American caliber and were stout against the run. That is all well and good, but those facts seemed to motivate Eddie G and his blockers up front. George had over 100 yards in the 1st quarter alone, and over 180 at halftime. Eddie kept up the yardage after the half too as on the first play of the 2nd half, George took a handoff from Hoying and burst through a hole on the left side, then sped down the sideline for a 64-yard touchdown.
Holy War 12
November 11, 2000 – South Bend, Indiana – According to onthisday.com the 12th College Football Holy War was played as Notre Dame knocked off Boston College 28-16.
Alexander the Great
November 11, 2001 – Husky Stadium, Seattle , Washington – Seahawks young running back Shaun Alexander in just his sixth start ran the rock for 266 yards on 35 carries and scored an 88-yard touchdown run as Seattle upset the favored Oakland Raiders 34-27.
The Vets still perform at a high level
November 11, 2002 – With some record setting performances, the Oakland Raiders, scooted past the Denver Broncos by the score of 34-10.
