COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUND-UP
U-M STUNS OHIO STATE TO CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH UPSET VICTORY IN COLUMBUS
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Michigan football team closed the 2024 regular season with a 13-10 victory over rival No. 2-ranked Ohio State on Saturday (Nov. 30) at Ohio Stadium. The Wolverines held the Buckeyes scoreless the entire second half and closed the game with a strong rushing attack.
With 6:13 remaining in the game and the score tied 10-10, the Wolverines mounted an 11-play drive that consisted of running plays, including nine rushes for 53 yards by Kalel Mullings. The drive shed more than five minutes off the clock and ended in a 21-yard field goal by Dominic Zvada to take a 13-10 lead with 45 seconds remaining in the contest. U-M secured the upset win on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Buckeyes to just one yard on the game’s closing drive.
The Maize and Blue defense shined in the victory, holding Ohio State to season lows of 10 points and 252 total yards. The Wolverines added a pair of interceptions from Aamir Hall and Makari Paige to prevent Ohio State from scoring. In the game’s final frame, Michigan allowed just 10 total yards and zero first downs to secure the win.
Mullings rushed the ball 32 times for 119 yards and scored the sole U-M touchdown. As a unit, the Michigan offense totaled 234 yards (172 rushing, 62 passing) and possessed the ball for seven more minutes than the Buckeyes.
After punting on its first possession, the Wolverines allowed a nine-play drive consisting of a steady dose of the Ohio State passing game. Michigan came up with a red-zone stand and held the Buckeyes to a 29-yard field goal.
U-M responded with a long drive of its own, a 6:30 march spanning the entire field, before getting stopped on a fourth-down rushing attempt at the Ohio State three-yard line. Momentum turned quickly back in Michigan’s direction when Hall jumped a route, intercepted a pass at the OSU 13-yard line and returned the ball to the OSU two-yard line. Two plays later, Mullings punched the ball into the end zone from one yard out to take a 7-3 lead in the second quarter.
After the Buckeyes missed a 38-yard field-goal try and were forced to punt following a three-and-out on their next offensive drive, the Wolverines were set up at the OSU 39-yard line. The offensive drive failed to gain momentum, but Zvada capped off the opportunity with a 54-yard field goal to move ahead 10-3 with 2:15 remaining in the first half.
Ohio State closed out the first-half scoring with a nine-play, 75-yard drive which culminated in a 10-yard passing touchdown to tie the game 10-10 at the break.
To open the second half, the teams traded punts, then turnovers. A diving Paige picked off an Ohio State pass at the U-M nine-yard line before Davis Warren threw an interception of his own to give the Buckeyes the ball back in Michigan territory. The Maize and Blue defense put up a strong front, holding OSU to a 34-yard field-goal try which was missed for the second time of the afternoon.
With the game stalled in a 10-10 tie, a U-M offensive drive commenced. An important play came when Warren, rolling out to his right, found Peyton O’Leary for a sliding sideline 18-yard catch on third down to keep the drive moving and bring the Wolverines into OSU territory. Set up at the Ohio State three-yard line, Warren threw his second interception of the game to give the Buckeyes the ball with less than eight minutes remaining in the contest.
U-M ran the clock down to 45 seconds and kicked the eventual game-winning field goal before putting together a defensive stand to secure the 13-10 victory in the rivalry game.
With the regular season now completed, the Wolverines await bowl game announcements to see who and where they will be playing this postseason.
No. 1 Oregon 49, Washington 21
The top-ranked Ducks, already locked into the Big Ten championship game next weekend against Penn State, finished a perfect regular season with a blowout win over the Huskies in Eugene, Ore.
Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for 209 yards with two touchdowns, and the Oregon ground game gained 222 yards. Jordan James had 99 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns, and Gabriel, Noah Whittington and Da’Jaun Riggs also scored rushing touchdowns for Oregon (12-0, 9-0).
Washington (6-6, 4-5) went with Demond Williams Jr. at quarterback over the more experienced Will Rogers, who was benched in the Huskies’ previous game. Williams spent much of the night running from Oregon defenders but ended up 17-for-20 for 201 yards and a touchdown pass.

Quinn Ewers passed for 218 yards and a touchdown and the Longhorns rode a dominant defensive performance to a berth in the Southeastern Conference championship game, beating the host Aggies in College Station, Texas.
Quintrevion Wisner rushed for a career-high 186 yards on 33 carries and the Longhorns (11-1, 7-1 SEC) held the Aggies (8-4, 5-3) to 244 total yards of offense to earn a meeting with No. 7 Georgia in the conference title game next Saturday in Atlanta. Texas has won five straight games since a 30-15 home loss to the Bulldogs on Oct. 19.
Marcel Reed passed for just 146 yards but added a team-high 56 rushing yards for Texas A&M, which got its only points from its defense when Will Lee III intercepted Ewers’ pass and ripped off a 93-yard return for a touchdown.
No. 4 Penn State 44, Maryland 7
Nicholas Singleton rushed for two touchdowns and the Nittany Lions scored 28 points in the second quarter in their blowout win over the Terrapins in State College, Pa.
Drew Allar went 17-of-26 for 171 yards and a touchdown for Penn State (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten), which has won four in a row.
MJ Morris threw the only touchdown for Maryland (4-8, 1-8) but also had three passes intercepted.
No. 5 Notre Dame 49, Southern California 35
Despite surrendering a season high in points, the Fighting Irish’s defense came through in the clutch with pick-sixes of 99 and 100 yards to beat the Trojans in Los Angeles.
Notre Dame (11-1), which has won 10 straight games, led 35-28 but USC (6-6) was driving. Notre Dame’s Christian Gray snagged an underthrown ball from Jayden Maiava near the pylon and returned it 99 yards down the sideline. Then Xavier Watts intercepted Maiava and went 100 yards to make it 49-28 with 1:18 to play.
Maiava went 27-for-48 for 360 yards with three touchdown passes, all of which went to Ja’Kobi Lane. Maiava also rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the loss.
Syracuse 42, No. 6 Miami 38
Kyle McCord passed for 380 yards and three touchdowns as the host Orange rallied to upset the Hurricanes in an ACC game.
Syracuse (9-3, 5-3) got two touchdown receptions from Jackson Meeks (seven catches, 110 yards). Teammate Trebor Pena caught six passes for 128 yards and one TD.
A win would’ve put Miami in the ACC title game next Saturday against SMU. Instead, the Hurricanes (10-2, 6-2) ended their regular season with two upset losses in their final three games. Cam Ward led Miami, passing for 349 yards and two TDs. He leads the nation with 36 TD passes, and he also went over 4,000 passing yards for the season.
No. 8 Tennessee 36, Vanderbilt 23
Nico Iamaleava threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns as the Volunteers stormed back from an early deficit to beat the host Commodores. Two of those scoring strikes went to Dont’e Thornton (three catches, 118 yards) while Dylan Sampson added 178 rushing yards on 25 carries.
Tennessee (10-2, 6-2 SEC) held Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia to 8-of-17 passing for 104 yards and had more snaps (73-49) and yards (538-232) than the Commodores (6-6, 3-5). Vanderbilt still got 17 first-quarter points against the Vols, who’d given up just over 13 points a game.
The Vols won’t play in the SEC title game, but likely clinched a College Football Playoff berth and possibly a first-round home game.
No. 9 SMU 38, Cal 6
The Mustangs jumped out to a three-touchdown lead and then sealed the game with a fourth-quarter explosion in their lopsided win over the visiting Golden Bears in an Athletic Coast Conference matchup in Dallas.
SMU (11-1, 8-0 ACC) was already assured of a berth in the conference title game on Dec. 7. The Mustangs will play Clemson, which qualified when No. 6 Miami fell at Syracuse on Saturday. Kevin Jennings threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Brashard Smith had rushing and receiving scores, and Derrick McFall also ran for a touchdown for SMU, which won its ninth in a row.
Chandler Rogers had 84 yards passing before leaving with an apparent leg injury in the third quarter for Cal (6-6, 2-6), and CJ Harris came on to throw for 75 yards and had one interception. Nyziah Hunter finished with 85 yards on five receptions.
No. 10 Indiana 66, Purdue 0
Kurtis Rourke threw for 349 yards and six touchdowns as the Hoosiers appear headed for an unlikely spot in the College Football Playoff after their lopsided Big Ten Conference rout of the Boilermakers in Bloomington, Ind.
Picked 17th among 18 teams in the conference’s preseason poll, Indiana improved to 11-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference. Though the Hoosiers lost the tiebreaker to No. 4 Penn State to meet No. 1 Oregon in the conference title game on Dec. 7, they should be among the 12-team CFP field when it’s announced on Dec. 8.
Their defense stifled hapless Purdue (1-11, 0-9), which managed just 67 yards and five first downs in absorbing its 11th straight loss.
No. 15 South Carolina 17, No. 12 Clemson 14
LaNorris Sellers ran for two touchdowns and amassed a combined 330 yards rushing and passing to lead the Gamecocks to a comeback victory over the host Tigers.
Sellers led the Gamecocks (9-3) on a nine-play, 75-yard drive that he capped with a 20-yard touchdown run to put them ahead by the eventual winning margin with 1:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Clemson (9-3) had one last chance and drove toward the red zone. But Demetrius Knight Jr. made a diving interception with 12 seconds remaining to seal the Gamecocks’ second win in three seasons in the Palmetto Bowl series and second in a row at Clemson.
No. 13 Alabama 28, Auburn 14
Quarterback Jalen Milroe rushed for 104 yards and three touchdowns and the Crimson Tide bolstered their playoff possibilities with a victory over the visiting Tigers in the Iron Bowl at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Milroe completed 18 of 24 passes for 256 yards and one interception as Alabama (9-3, 5-3 SEC) bounced back from last week’s 24-3 road loss to Oklahoma. The victory could return the Crimson Tide to the top 10 when Tuesday’s latest College Football Playoff rankings are unveiled.
Justice Haynes rushed for a touchdown and Germie Bernard had seven receptions for 111 yards for Alabama. Payton Thorne was 24-of-41 passing for 301 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Tigers (5-7, 2-6), who clinched their fourth straight losing campaign.
No. 16 Arizona State 49, Arizona 7
Cam Skattebo rushed for 177 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns to lead the visiting Sun Devils past the archrival Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz.
Arizona State (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) will face Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game Dec. 7. Sam Leavitt completed 17 of 22 pass attempts for 291 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for the Sun Devils, who piled up 643 yards in total offense.
Arizona (4-8, 2-7) ended coach Brent Brennan’s first season by losing seven of its last eight games. Receiver Tetairoa McMillan, a projected NFL first-round draft pick, finished with six receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown. Noah Fifita, a preseason Heisman hopeful, completed 14 of 29 pass attempts for 126 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions.
No. 18 Iowa State 29, No. 24 Kansas State 21
The Cyclones scored 14 points off turnovers and defeated the Wildcats on a frigid night in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa State (10-2, 7-2), which will face Arizona State in the Big 12 title game, last won a conference football championship in 1912 when they were members of the Missouri Valley Conference. Iowa State has 10 wins in a season for the first time in school history.
Rocco Becht threw for 137 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones. Avery Johnson racked up 220 yards passing and three touchdowns for the Wildcats (8-4, 5-4), who have lost three of their past four games.
No. 19 BYU 30, Houston 18
Jake Retzlaff passed for 167 yards and added two rushing touchdowns as BYU rode a stifling defensive performance to beat Houston in Provo, Utah.
Retzlaff scored on runs of 13 and 7 yards, the latter coming with 2:52 remaining in the game to help BYU (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) reclaim its two-possession advantage.
Zeon Chriss passed for 156 yards and ran for two scores for Houston (4-8, 3-6).
No. 21 Missouri 28, Arkansas 21
Brady Cook ran for a 30-yard go-ahead touchdown with 1:53 remaining, lifting the Tigers over the Razorbacks in a snowy Battle Line Rivalry matchup in Columbia, Mo.
Cook had a quiet day through the air (10-of-20, 168 yards), as Missouri (9-3, 5-3 SEC) opted to lean on Marcus Carroll (22 carries, 90 yards, two TDs).
Taylen Green was 21-of-35 passing for 229 yards and added 53 rushing yards for Arkansas (6-6, 3-5). Ja’Quinden Jackson ran 18 times for 87 yards and three TDs to fuel the Arkansas offense. Andrew Armstrong registered 128 yards on nine receptions.
No. 22 UNLV 38, Nevada 14
Hajj-Malik Williams threw for 168 yards, ran for 104 more and accounted for three touchdowns as the Rebels beat the visiting rival Wolf Pack in Las Vegas to clinch a berth in next week’s Mountain West Championship Game.
Jacob De Jesus led UNLV (10-2, 6-1) with a season-high 84 yards receiving, while Ricky White III added five receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown in each player’s final home game at UNLV. Jai’Den Thomas led the team in rushing with 135 yards on 15 carries, equaling his total from last week’s win at San Jose State in 11 fewer carries.
Nevada quarterback Brendon Lewis finished with 292 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, completing 27 of his 37 pass attempts. UNLV outgained Nevada (3-10, 0-7) 519-359 in total net yards and outgained it 351-67 on the ground.
No. 23 Illinois 38, Northwestern 28
Aidan Laughery ran for 172 yards and three touchdowns, both career highs, to propel the Fighting Illini past the Wildcats at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
The sophomore running back needed just 12 carries to orchestrate his career day and ripped off three runs of 30 or more yards, including a 64-yard touchdown scamper that put Illinois (9-3, 6-3 Big Ten) ahead 21-10 early in the second half. After Northwestern (4-8, 2-7) pulled within 28-20 entering the fourth quarter, Laughery broke off a 31-yard run to replenish the Fighting Illini’s two-score lead.
The Wildcats used two quarterbacks in the loss, their third straight to end the season. Jack Lausch played most of the snaps and threw for 287 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions on 25-of-48 passing. Before the game, head coach David Braun said freshman quarterback Ryan Boe would take snaps with his team out of bowl contention. Boe completed 4 of 13 throws for 42 yards with an interception.
REPORT: UCF HC GUS MALZAHN TO BECOME FLORIDA STATE OC
Gus Malzahn is leaving his post as UCF’s head coach to reunite with Florida State coach Mike Norvell as the Seminoles’ offensive coordinator, ESPN reported on Saturday.
Norvell, who served as a graduate assistant under Malzahn at Tulsa in 2007-08, relinquished his role as FSU’s primary playcaller amid a staff shakeup this season.
Florida State, 1-7 in the Athletic Coast Conference this season, entered Saturday’s season finale against Florida at 2-9 and ranked No. 131 in the nation in total offense.
UCF also endured a tough 2024 season, going 4-8 after losing eight of its last nine games. During Malzahn’s four-year tenure, the Knights went 28-24, including 5-13 in the Big 12 Conference the last two seasons.
Malzahn, 59, is 105-62 in 13 seasons as a college head coach, highlighted by a 68-35 mark in eight seasons at Auburn — which included a BCS title game appearance in 2013. He served as offensive coordinator and playcaller when the Tigers won the national title in 2010.
Malzahn will be tasked with revitalizing a Florida State offense that helped produce a 13-1 campaign in 2023, when the Seminoles were denied a spot in the College Football Playoff. Over the last three seasons at UCF, his rushing attack has been in the Top 10 in the nation.
In his 19 seasons as a college head coach or offensive coordinator, Malzahn’s teams have averaged 447.7 yards per game, and three of his teams eclipsed 7,000 yards in a season.

LEGENDARY ST. JOHN’S COACH LOU CARNESECCA DIES AT 99
Lou Carnesecca, who collected 526 wins during a legendary coaching career at St. John’s, died on Saturday. He was 99.
Carnesecca was at the helm for 24 seasons, getting two stints with the Red Storm (1965-70, 1973-92). St. John’s broke the news of his death and mentioned that he passed away surrounded by family.
None of Carnesecca’s teams ever recorded a losing season, with all 24 of them qualifying for a postseason tournament.
The Red Storm went to 18 NCAA Tournaments under Carnesecca.
Carnesecca was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, then landed in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame 14 years later. He was a two-time National Coach of the Year, a three-time Big East Coach of the Year and a six-time Metropolitan Coach of the Year.
Hailing from New York, Carnesecca stayed local for college and attended St. John’s, but before doing so, he served in the United States Coast Guard for three years during World War II.
When he wasn’t coaching the Red Storm, Carnesecca was with the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association. He was only in as coach for three seasons (1971-73), but during that time, New York didn’t miss the playoffs once, even reaching the ABA Finals in 1972.
Carnesecca leaves his wife of 73 years, Mary. In a news release, St. John’s said that details of memorial services will be released when they become available.
OREGON STUNS NO. 9 ALABAMA IN FINALS IN LAS VEGAS
Keeshawn Barthelemy scored 22 points, but his biggest shot of the night was a miss that Oregon teammate Nate Bittle tip-dunked to give the Ducks an 83-81 win over No. 9 Alabama in Saturday’s championship game of the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.
Oregon (8-0) coughed up a six-point lead in the final 30 seconds of regulation when Aden Holloway sliced the deficit in half with a 3-pointer after a pair of Barthelemy free throws pushed the Ducks lead to 81-75.
Alabama (6-2) immediately regained possession when Mark Sears swiped the ball from Brandon Angel on the ensuing inbound pass. Sears was then fouled and split his foul shots — but Mouhamed Dioubate rebounded the miss and was sent to the line himself, where he sank both attempts to tie the game.
The Ducks put the ball in Barthelemy’s hot hands on their subsequent trip down the court. He shot 4-of-5 from 3-point distance on the night and had given Oregon a critical, four-point cushion in the final minute with a hanging floater earlier.
Derrion Reid got a hand on Barthelemy’s attempt to alter its trajectory, but Bittle followed up for the game-winning dunk. It capped a 19-point, nine-rebound night for Bittle.
Oregon also got 12 points from TJ Bamba — the only Duck beside Barthelemy to make a 3-pointer — and 11 points from Supreme Cook. Jackson Shelstad scored six points, with no two bigger than the pair he was awarded on a fast-break layup that underwent a lengthy video review.
Shelstad swiped the ball from Grant Nelson’s blindside with the score tied at 75. Jarin Stevenson’s chase-down shot-block effort was called goaltending, giving Oregon the lead down the stretch.
Stevenson was one of five Crimson Tide scorers in double-figures, finishing with 11 points before fouling out. Sears and Holloway added 11 each, Latrell Whitesell Jr. scored 10 points, and Labaron Philon shot 6-of-8 from the floor for a team-high 15 points.

J’Wan Roberts then missed the front end of a 1-and-1 situation and Byrd grabbed an offensive rebound on the other end, was fouled and made both free throws to tie it at 65 with 13 seconds left.
San Diego State scored the first six points of the game and the Cougars didn’t put points on the board until Joseph Tugler made a layup with 15:24 left in the half.
The Aztecs stayed ahead until Houston went on a 13-0 run to move ahead 20-12 with 6:17 left in the first half.
Sharp scored the first 10 points in the run, seven on free throws, before Cryer capped it with a 3-pointer.
San Diego State managed to cut the deficit to three on two occasions before Houston took a 30-25 lead into the break.
Houston then scored the first six points of the second half to take its biggest lead of the game at 36-25.
Coleman-Jones tried to spark a rally by scoring four straight points for the Aztecs, but another 3-pointer by Cryer extended the lead back to double digits.
Byrd hit a 3 with 11:44 remaining to cut the deficit to four. but Houston scored five straight points.

Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley and Alexander Kerfoot each had a goal and an assist, Barrett Hayton had two assists and Michael Carcone also scored for Utah, which equaled its season high for goals in a game. The 25-year-old Stauber was making just his seventh career start and first with Utah.
Ilya Samsonov finished with 22 saves for Vegas, which suffered its third home loss in 12 games (9-3-0).
Flyers 3, Blues 2 (OT)
Matvei Michkov scored his third overtime goal of November to help Philadelphia close the month in style with a win over host St. Louis.
Michkov, who doesn’t turn 20 until Dec. 9, scored the decisive goal on a breakaway after Travis Konecny found him with a sprawling outlet pass while falling to the ice. Michkov also had a sparkling assist earlier in the game, while Aleksei Kolosov made 26 saves for the Flyers.
The Blues’ Jake Neighbours forced overtime with a tally late in regulation, and Dylan Holloway also scored for the hosts. Jordan Binnington made 28 saves for St. Louis, which lost for the first time in three games under new coach Jim Montgomery.
Oilers 4, Avalanche 1
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist, Brett Kulak, Kasperi Kapanen and Vasily Podkolzin also scored and Edmonton beat Colorado in Denver.

INDIANA PACERS
GAME PREVIEW: PACERS AT GRIZZLIES
After wrapping up a successful homestand, the Indiana Pacers are on the road again.
Indiana (9-11) will kick-start a four-game road trip on Sunday when they take on the Memphis Grizzlies (13-7) at FedExForum.
The Pacers finished 3-1 in games played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse this past week, posting wins over the Washington Wizards, New Orleans Pelicans and Portland Trail Blazers before falling to the Detroit Pistons on Friday night in an NBA Cup game.
Over the last four games, the Pacers are averaging 114 points per game while shooting 48 percent as a team.
In the recent 130-106 loss to Detroit, the Pistons scored a season high for points and shot a season-best 57.8 percent against Indiana. With the incentive to score as many points as possible for NBA Cup standings, the Pistons played their starters until the final buzzer while the Pacers used an all-bench lineup for the last three and a half minutes of action.
Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 21 points while pulling down nine rebounds in the loss, while Tyrese Haliburton added 19 points and five assists. Those two have played well during the recent four-game stretch, with Haliburton putting up 25.5 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.8 rebounds nightly while Siakam is producing 21.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists during that same span.
Indiana will now face one of the hottest teams in the league in Memphis.
The Grizzlies currently boast the longest winning streak in the Western Conference and ranks first in the NBA in assists (30.4) and blocks (7.3) per game, and third in points (121) and rebounds (48.3) per game.
Memphis has won five straight games, winning all but one of those games by double-digit margins.
On Friday, the Grizzlies topped the New Orleans Pelicans 130-109 in Memphis behind 27 points and seven assists by star guard Ja Morant, 23 points from big man Jaren Jackson Jr., and 20 points off the bench from Santi Aldama.
Seven players are averaging double-digit scoring for the Grizzlies this season. Jackson Jr. is leading Memphis so far at 22.2 points per game (18 games played), but Morant is close behind at 21.4 points per game (10 games played).
Rebounding could play a significant factor in the game, as the Pacers are 4-9 when outrebounded by their opponents while the Grizzlies are 10-4 when winning the battle on the boards.
Former Purdue superstar Zach Edey will likely miss the game as he recovers from a left ankle sprain. Edey’s rookie season has gotten off to a solid start, as the 7-foot-4 Canadian is averaging 11.1 points on 61 percent shooting and 6.9 rebounds per game across 20.1 minutes.
The Pacers remain without Ben Sheppard (left oblique strain), Andrew Nembhard (left knee patellofemoral inflammation), and Aaron Nesmith (left ankle sprain), and it remains to be seen if any could potentially return on the upcoming road trip.
Memphis and Indiana have already played once with their current rosters, as the Grizzlies beat the Pacers 120-116 in preseason action on Oct. 14. Bane and Edey each scored 23 points in the practice run win.
Projected Starters
Pacers: G – Tyrese Haliburton, G – Quenton Jackson, F – Bennedict Mathuin, , F – Pascal Siakam, C – Myles Turner

Grizzlies: Zach Edey – out (left ankle sprain), GG Jackson – out (left fifth metatarsal repair), Vince Williams Jr. – out (right ankle sprain).
Last Meeting
Jan. 28, 2024: The Pacers turned a two-point halftime deficit into a double-digit third-quarter lead before holding off a late charge by the Grizzlies for a 116-110 win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Six players scored in double figures for the Pacers, led by 24 points by Bennedict Mathurin. After Mathurin, Pascal Siakam logged 19 points, six rebounds, and six assists, and Jalen Smith posted a season-best 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Jaren Jackson Jr. topped the Grizzlies’ box score with 25 points, and Vince Williams Jr. scored 20.
Overall, the Pacers outshot the Grizzlies 48.9 to 46.3 percent and outscored the visitors 54-48 in the paint.
The Grizzlies were very short-handed, missing eight players due to injuries including star guard Ja Morant. Indiana was also without a trio of key players, as Tyrese Haliburton (left hamstring strain management), Myles Turner (mid-back spasms) and T.J. McConnell (personal reasons) all didn’t suit up.
Noteworthy
The Grizzlies’ roster features five players who played high school or college basketball in Indiana: Zach Edey (Purdue), Jaren Jackson Jr. (La Lumiere/Park Tudor), Desmond Bane (Seton Catholic School), John Konchar (Purdue Fort Wayne), and Jake LaRavia (Lawrence Central).
Indiana and Memphis will play two games this season, with the second held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Feb. 20.
The Pacers and Grizzlies split their series 1-1 during the 2023-2024 season.
Indiana is 2-8 on the road this season while the Grizzles are 9-3 at home.

INDY FUEL HOCKEY
FUEL SWEEP SERIES IN UTAH
WEST VALLEY CITY – The Fuel would look for the series sweep against the Utah Grizzlies to wrap up their 15-game road trip to start the season. Two goals from Kevin Lombardi propelled the Fuel to a 4-1 win.
1ST PERIOD
Three penalties were committed before the game saw its first goal, one by the Fuel and two by the Grizzlies. The one that hurt was Kabore Dunn’s slashing minor at 14:04.
That would set up Cam Hausinger for a power-play goal scored in the final second of the power play at 16:03.
The final game of this three-game series would become chippy as three roughing minors were called within 70 seconds of each other. In total, 14 penalty minutes were assessed in the first period.
Indy outshot Utah 14 to 7 in the first frame.
2ND PERIOD
Kevin Lombardi wasted no time extending the Fuel lead as he scored not once, but twice in the first 27 seconds of the period to put the Fuel ahead 3-0.
Lombardi’s two goals in 14 seconds set a franchise record for the two fastest goals by the same player, breaking the previous record of 28 seconds set by Kenny Ryan in 2017 against Quad City.
Utah would break their scoring silence at 14:40 when Briley Wood found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Jordan Martin would be the culprit of another coincidental roughing minor, this time with Gianni Fairbrother of the Grizzlies at 18:51.
The period would end with the Fuel once again outshooting Utah 14 to 8.
3RD PERIOD
Once again, the Fuel wasted no time getting on the board as Colin Bilek would score 63 seconds into the final frame, giving him his third of the year and second of the three-game series.
As the Fuel pulled away, tensions continued to fume as the heated nature of this series boiled over at the 7:47 mark. Six total penalties were assessed, including three to Cam Hausinger, one being a game misconduct, ending his night early.
The pleasantries weren’t over. With 3:22 left in the game, Darby Llewellyn would be checked into the boards after the whistle, leading to four misconducts, two against the Fuel and two against the Grizzlies.
In total, the game would have 117 penalty minutes, 68 by the Fuel and 49 by the Grizzlies.
Indy would outshot Utah in all three periods and end the game with 37 shots to Utah’s 17.

INDIANA FOOTBALL
HOOSIERS HAMMER BOILERS
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sometimes, if you’re head coach Curt Cignetti and the No. 10 Indiana Hoosiers, you hold back nothing. You push until rival Purdue breaks, until 66-0 victory arrives and national relevance culminates that no amount of cold and snow and opponent effort can stop.
The Old Oaken Bucket was back in Hoosier hands for the first time since 2019, a historic 11-1 regular season concluded, and it came with leave-no-doubt competitive ruthlessness at Memorial Stadium Saturday night.
“We wanted to play from the first play to the last play,” Cignetti said. “We had to play well. I think we did.”
Did they ever.
As the game clock approached zero, center Mike Katic got the Bucket, symbolic of this rivalry, and carried it in triumph to his teammates, to Indiana fans, to anyone within sight. Of course he did. He’d waited six years for this moment, and no Hoosier better deserved it. In the Memorial Stadium weight room aftermath, he relished the moment with an unlit victory cigar and a non-stop smile.
“This is the happiest I’ve been in a long time,” he said. “We haven’t had the Bucket in five years. Getting it back in that fashion, having that moment with Coach Deal, I’m over the moon.”
In the aftermath, Hoosiers hugged and flexed and posed as fireworks erupted behind them, a celebration a year and countless hours of work and sweat and preparation and belief in the making.
“Even if on paper we weren’t the most talented team,” quarterback Kurtis Rourke said, “we had the most heart and most will to win. It showed. Every game, we wanted to prove we belonged. I hope now we have.”
In 12 games, IU had 10 blowout victories, surpassing 40 points eight times, and 30 points 10 times. It held five opponents to 10 or fewer points, led the Big Ten in average victory margin at nearly 30 points a game, and reached as high as No. 5 in the national polls.
Against Purdue, Indiana got its largest shutout victory in Big Ten play since the Associated Press era began in 1936.
“We made a statement — again,” Cignetti said. “I can’t say enough about what this team has done. They’re not satisfied. They’re not done yet. They want more. They will get more.”
Next are the final college football playoff rankings. Tuesday’s release will be followed by the Dec. 8 finale, the day after all the conference championship games are played. It will include the pairings for the 12-team format, and Indiana seems a lock to make it.
“We think we’ve done enough,” Katic said. “We’re putting it in the hands of the committee. We’ve proven we’re a playoff team and the committee will see that.”
How dominant were the Hoosiers on Saturday night? By halftime, they had 28 points, 334 yards, and 17 first downs. Purdue had zero, 54, and three.
Did Indiana let up in the second half?
Not a chance.
Consider the fake punt for an 18-yard rushing first down by defensive lineman James Carpenter with IU leading 38-0 late in the third quarter. It resulted in Rourke’s five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zach Horton.
Consider Rourke throwing on five of six plays to start the fourth quarter for a touchdown and a 52-0 lead, then coming back with another TD pass less than a minute later after a Purdue fumble.
The Hoosiers finished with 582 total yards. It was a welcome turnaround from offensive struggles against Michigan and Ohio State in their previous two games.
“It was awesome to get back on schedule,” Rourke said. “We’ve been practicing hard and to get back to the offense we’re used to — balanced run, balanced pass. Hopefully, this momentum carries on to whatever is next for us.”
Snow and wind didn’t bother Rourke, who shredded the Boilers with passes short and long from the start. His 84-yard, second-quarter touchdown pass to receiver Elijah Sarratt was the fifth longest in program history and capped a 99-yard drive. He finished 23-for-31 for 349 yards with a program-record-tying six touchdown passes.
“It’s a great honor,” Rourke said. “I’m glad I could be part of the record books.”
Sarratt totaled eight catches for 165 yards and two TDs. Seven receivers caught at least one pass. Running backs Justice Ellison and Ty Son Lawton combined for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
Ellison and Lawton became the first program duo to rush for at least 10 touchdowns in the same season. Lawton has 12. Ellison has 10.
IU’s defense was just as ruthless against the Big Ten’s worst offense. It limited Purdue to 67 total yards, had two sacks, nine tackles for loss, recovered three fumbles, and intercepted two passes. Boiler quarterbacks were just 9-for-21.
“Our defense was tremendous,” Cignetti said. “They swarmed the ball, stopped the run, and harassed the quarterback.”
Indiana dominance started early. It used a pair of receiver reverse runs – 22 yards by Myles Price, 13 yards by Ke’Shawn Williams — to set up Ellison’s two-yard Wildcat TD run for a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Linebacker Jailin Walker’s interception inside the Purdue 25-yard line resulted in no points when Nicolas Radicic missed from 46 yards. It was his first miss of the season and the only offensive negative.
Rourke’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Williams made it 14-0 early in the second quarter. Rourke came back with the 84-yard TD pass to Sarratt for a 21-0 lead. Lawton busted runs of 21 and four yards for another touchdown and a 28-0 halftime score.
Defensive lineman CJ West’s fumble recovery to open the third quarter led to Radicic’s 26-yard field goal and a 31-0 lead. Rourke’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Sarratt and his five-yard TD throw to Horton wrapped up the 45-0 third-quarter lead. Rourke’s 34-yard pass to receiver Miles Cross made it 52-0 two minutes into the fourth quarter. Following a Purdue fumble, Rourke’s 17-yard TD pass to Omar Cooper Jr. made it 59-0.
Tayven Jackson replaced Rourke and added a touchdown run for the final score.
“We went out with a bang,” Katic said. “It’s incredible.”
And so, a traditionally struggling program, one picked near the bottom of the Big Ten in the preseason, has emerged as a national power in Cignetti’s debut Hoosier season.
“When you have capable people who are very motivated, who are disciplined and committed, who have high character, and who keep their eye on the bullseye, anything is possible,” Cignetti said. “This group has proven that.”
Now it’s up to the selection committee to see what’s next.
“We’ll get a little break, take care of our bodies, practice, and get ready for whoever we play next,” Sarratt said.
INDIANA MEN’S SOCCER
MEN’S SOCCER SEASON ENDS IN SWEET 16
DENVER — The Indiana men’s soccer season concluded in the NCAA Tournament Third Round Saturday (Nov. 30), as the No. 14 national seed Hoosiers (11-5-5, 7-1-2 B1G) fell to host and No. 3 Denver (14-3-4, 7-1-0 Summit), 1-0.
Denver’s ninth-minute goal was the difference, as a clearance from a Pioneer cross deflected off a Hoosier and into the path of the goal scorer. IU dominated play in the second half but could not convert its chances.
Indiana’s run ends after reaching the round of 16 for the 10th straight season — the nation’s longest active streak. The Hoosiers won their 19th Big Ten regular season championship in 2024, earning a 7-1-2 record (23 points) in conference play to share the title with Ohio State.
KEY MOMENTS
• 9′ – Redshirt junior Ian Smith put a ball across goal that came to junior midfielder Jack Wagoner. Wagoner attempted to clear with his first touch, but it deflected off sophomore defender Alex Barger and into the feet of freshman Keegan Kelly. Kelly jumped on the opportunity and gave Denver its lead.
• 77′ – After sustained pressure in the second half, Indiana had its best chance in the 77th minute as a set piece from senior midfielder Patrick McDonald came to senior defender Jansen Miller in the box. Miller got his foot around it, but the keeper pounced on his attempt.
• 80′ – Minutes later, graduate forward Justin Weiss put a header on goal off a ball floating across, but the keeper was in the perfect position to keep it out of the net.
NOTABLES
• Indiana returned to the NCAA Tournament for the 49th time in program history, its 38th consecutive appearance. The Hoosiers earned the No. 14 national seed, the program’s 24th seed all-time and the 10th in 11 seasons. IU advanced to the third round for the 43rd time in program history. The listed marks all stand as NCAA records.

Devin Mockobee’s team-high 21 yards on 14 carries raised his career total to 2,466 rushing yards in just three seasons as the Boilermakers’ lead running back. He finished his junior season in ninth place for total rushing yards in school history.
Dillon Thieneman posted his fifth double-digit tackle game of the season, notching a team-best 10 stops, seven solos, and one pass breakup. It was his fifth consecutive game leading the team and eighth time this season.
Nyland Green logged his second career sack on third down during the first drive of the game, forcing a punt by the Hoosiers. Later in the first quarter, Kydran Jenkins and Yanni Karlaftis combined for a sack, dropping quarterback Kurtis Rourke for an 11-yard loss.
Andrew Sowinski registered a career-high five kick returns for 113 yards, leading the Boilermakers with 119 all-purpose yards. His 40-yard kick return in the second quarter was Purdue’s longest of the season.

IRISH INTERCEPT SOUTHERN CAL UPSET BID, WIN 10TH GAME IN A ROW
The University of Notre Dame football team (11-1) outlasted Southern Cal (6-6) 49-35 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to win its 10th game in a row and put the program in strong position to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. A back-and-forth battle in the Greatest Intersectional Rivalry in college football was punctuated by two huge plays by the Notre Dame defense late in the game.
Sophomore cornerback Christian Gray, who battled with the talented Trojan receiver group all afternoon, picked off a pass at the one-yard line and returned it 99 yards to put his team ahead 42-28 with 3:39 remaining. Southern Cal drove down the field again, but the Irish defense stepped up yet again with a perfectly timed blitz that forced a desperation heave into the end zone that Xavier Watts picked off and returned 100 yards for another score.
That was 199 yards worth of interception returns in less than two minutes to seal a victory for Notre Dame and a perfect way to end the game for the Irish defense, which uncharacteristically gave up 557 yards and 360 passing yards to the Trojans.
On the offensive side of the ball, Notre Dame punted the ball only twice and put up over 400 yards of offense. Riley Leonard completed 17-of-22 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns while adding 50 yards rushing along with Jadarian Price (112 yards) and Jeremiyah Love (99 yards). The 259 rushing yards for Notre Dame are the most against Southern Cal since the team rushed for 308 in 2019 and the most in the Coliseum since 1996 (the Irish ran for 260 yards in a 27-20 loss).
Irish tight ends Mitchell Evans and Eli Raridon both caught touchdown passes from Leonard who connected with eight different receivers.
The 84 points scored by both teams mark the most in the history of the Jeweled Shillelagh rivalry that dates back to 1926.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Cal drove into Notre Dame territory, earning two first downs on its first drive before the Irish defense earned a stop. On second down, Christian Gray broke up a slant pass, then buried an SC pass receiver on a fourth down attempt for a single yard to give the offense the ball at their own 28-yard line.
Jeremiyah Love set the tone for the Irish on the opening drive. Running hard and through Trojan tacklers, Love would end up with 36 yards rushing on four carries during the opening stanza. He started the drive with 19 yards, then Leonard found Kris Mitchell for a first down on third and four. Another tough run from Love earned the Irish a first down inside the 10. Leonard kept up the middle to the one-yard line and Love finished off the drive with a one-yard plunge.
Leonard Moore keyed the next defensive stop for the Irish on pass break up on third down. Notre Dame picked up eight yards on the first play to Jayden Thomas and went back to him on the next play but he was hit from behind, fumbled straight up into the air and Southern Cal recovered at the Notre Dame 37.
The Trojans seized the momentum and scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak which looked close to a stop by the Irish defense but ended up as a delayed touchdown call by the officials.
Notre Dame looked to be stalled on their next drive, but a perfectly executed fake punt saw Tyler Buchner connect with Mitchell Evans for 18 yards to keep the drive alive. On third and long Leonard then found Evan again for nine yards, then Faison for an easy fourth-down conversion.
Love then burst off the left side for 19 yards to get into the red zone, but the drive stalled there with a dropped pass and a quarterback draw that set up a short field goal attempt. Mitch Jeter pushed the kick to the right and the game remained tied at 7-7.
The Irish defense quickly earned a three-and-out. Gabriel Rubio sacked the quarterback on the first play, then Leonard broke up another second down pass and made the tackle on a screen pass well short of the marker on third down.
Notre Dame moved the ball over midfield and faced a fourth-and-one just outside the SC 40-yard line. Leonard fought for the first down, making the Irish three-for-three on fourth down in the first half. A tripping call on SC provided more yardage, then Love put up another show on a screen pass, leaping over a Trojan defender for a 20-yard gain down to the 12-yard line.
Leonard then found Eli Raridon wide open in the back of the end zone for a touchdown to give the Irish a 14-7 lead.
The lead did not last long as the Trojans drove down the field in just 31 seconds to tie the game on a 12-yard touchdown toss just before halftime.
Notre Dame received the ball to start the second half and did not waste time to recapture the lead. Love gained 10 on the first play, then on third and four Leonard found Mitchell for 19 yards. After Love gained four and took a rest, Jadarian Price came in and burst through the right side middle behind blocks from Billy Schrauth and Anthonie Knapp and out-legged the Trojan defenders for a 36-yard touchdown run.
The game of back -and- forth continued as SC answered with a scoring drive of their own. The Trojans marched 77 yards in eight plays, capped by another quarterback sneak for the touchdown.
It was time for the Irish to answer and they did empathically. Love took a short pass and made 17 yards out of it, making two SC defenders miss. On the play, however, the spectacular Irish running back was injured and did not return to the game. Price then got four yards and added 15 on a personal foul penalty on the Trojans. On the next play, Leonard scrambled for 24 yards down to the four-yard line. Price got two yards, then Leonard the final two on a quarterback power run behind Raridon’s block to put the Irish up 28-21.
The defense earned their first stop of the second half on the next Trojan drive. After one first down, Drayk Bowen sniffed out a run play on third and long to stuff the SC runner and force a punt.
Notre Dame looked to be on pace on the first play of the drive when Price broke through the middle for 18 yards. On the next play, Leonard looked deep and under-threw his intended target for an interception which was returned to the Notre Dame 45-yard line.
The Irish needed another stop and earned one on the next Trojan drive. It was another fourth down attempt when Jack Kiser and Joshua Burnham put pressure on the quarterback. A heave downfield looked to be caught by the SC receiver but All-American safety Xavier Watts was there for a huge pass break up. The red-hot Notre Dame offense had the ball back.
Price gained four on the first play, then found a huge hole behind Pat Coogan and Billy Schrauth for 35 yards to the SC 23-yard line. Leonard then stepped up in the pocket and threw a perfect pass to Mitchell Evans at the pylon. The senior tight end pulled in the pass for a great leaping catch and a touchdown to put the Irish up 35-21.
A big pass break up on a third and long play by Gray, with pressure in the quarterback’s face by freshman defensive end Bryce Young, gave the Irish the ball back. Unfortunately, the Irish could not move down the field and punted back to the Trojans.
Southern Cal moved the ball into the red zone behind two big pass plays, including a 50-50 ball won by the Trojan receiver inside the five-yard line. Three plays later, SC connected on a six-yard touchdown pass to cut the Irish lead to seven points.
Notre Dame failed to move the ball on their next drive and was forced to punt the ball away with just under six minutes remaining. The Irish did get a great punt from James Rendell as a 60-yard effort pushed SC back to their own 16-yard line.
The Trojans quickly drove the ball into the red zone, helped by another 50-50 ball on third down. Southern Cal tried another such pass toward the end zone a few plays later, but Christian Gray played the ball perfectly, intercepted the pass and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to put the Irish ahead 42-28. The incredible play matched Luther Bradley’s 99-yard interception return against Purdue in 1975 as the longest in program history.
That record did not last long. Desperate to get back into the game the Trojans drove to the Notre Dame 12-yard line but the Irish held them to a fourth down attempt. Notre Dame blitzed and forced an errant throw, intercepted by Xavier Watts in the end zone and he easily returned the ball down the same sidelines as Gray just minutes earlier for a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Southern Cal tacked on a meaningless touchdown in the game’s final seconds but the Irish walked off the field triumphant with a 49-35 victory.

IRISH FALL IN HEARTBREAKER AT FRIENDSHIP FOUR
BELFAST, Northern Ireland — The University of Notre Dame hockey team concluded its trip to the 2024 Friendship Four with a second-place finish in the tournament after falling 4-3 to No. 13/13 Boston University Saturday night.
The Irish found themselves down early in the contest, conceding a shorthanded tally less than halfway through the opening period to trail 1-0.
Hunter Strand evened the tally at 12:24 of the first period to make it a 1-1 game 15 seconds before Justin Janicke swept the puck out of midair to give the Irish their first lead of the night.
It was Blake Biondi who extended the Irish lead early in the second period, scoring his second of the weekend, and third point, to give Notre Dame the 3-1 advantage through two periods played.
BU would answer with three goals in the third period to snatch the Belpot Trophy from the grasps of the Irish in the 4-3 final.
GOALS
Hunter Strand found the equalizer glove side after Michael Mastrodomenico found him on the breakaway halfway through the first. Carter Slaggert, who found Mastrodomenico in the neutral zone, was credited with the second assist on the play.
Moments after the Strand goal, fellow senior Justin Janicke swept the puck out of midair to give the Irish the 2-1 lead at 12:39 of the first period. Brennan Ali fought to keep the puck onside, feeding a pass along the boards to Danny Nelson along the halfwall who centered a floating puck to Janicke who batted it into the net.
Blake Biondi kept his scoring streak alive with a second period tally to make it a 3-1 game just 4:01 into the second stanza. The graduate forward picked up the puck at the blueline and danced into the Terrier zone before firing a shot into the back of the net. Ryan Helliwell and Jaedon Kerr were each credited with assists on the goal.
KEY STATS
The Irish held the narrow edge in shots on goal, outshooting the Terriers 31-30 Saturday evening.
In addition to their 31 shots, the visitors jumped in front of 10 blocked shots, led by Carter Slaggert and Jimmy Jurcev who each ate two shots Saturday.
With six shots on goal in the Friendship Four championship game, Paul Fischer led the team in the category.
The Irish were perfect once again on the penalty kill Saturday night, killing off all four penalties in Belfast over the two game tournament.

IRISH COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT IN 76-80 LOSS TO #21/19 CREIGHTON
LAS VEGAS – The Notre Dame men’s basketball team came close to earning a ranked win in Vegas on the final day of the Players Era Festival. The Fighting Irish (4-4) rallied down 17 points to No. 21/19 Creighton to take a 53-52 lead with 10:19 remaining. However, the Bluejays (5-3) connected on four straight triples soon after and the Irish ultimately fell 76-80.
It was a tough week for the Fighting Irish who lost All-ACC guard Markus Burton four minutes into their opening slate in Vegas. The sophomore guard was averaging 21.4 ppg heading into the week. All three games were there for the taking – a one-point loss to Rutgers in overtime, holding No. 6/7 Houston to a season low, and then the result today.
Tae Davis and Braeden Shrewsberry led the Irish with 17 points each. Davis was 5-for-15 from the field, reeled in four boards and dished out five assists. Shrewsberry was 7-for-18 shooting, 2-for-7 from deep, and collected four rebounds.
Davis averaged 18.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists in three games in Vegas. Shrewsberry averaged 16.3 ppg.
Another standout from today was Garrett Sundara. The freshman forward scored a season-best 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, which included three triples, plus four rebounds in just 11 minutes of play.
Matt Allocco also finished in double figures with 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting. He averaged 14.7 ppg over the week.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first 12 minutes of this contest was a stretch in which the Irish would probably not want to remember. It featured a Creighton 18-2 scoring run in which the Bluejays built their largest lead of the game up 30-13. Creighton started 12-of-19 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc compared to Notre Dame’s start of 6-of-24 plus 1-of-8 from deep.
However, right at the seven-minute mark, the Irish took a turn both offensively and defensively. Notre Dame got back in the game with a scoring run of their own, outpacing Creighton 12-0 over a three-minute and 20-second stretch, cutting the deficit to 25-30.
The Bluejays then outscored the Irish 10-5 over the final 3.5 minutes to claim a 40-30 halftime lead. Creighton shot 16-for-31 in the half versus 13-of-36 from Notre Dame. Eight different Irish players scored in the first half led by Shrewsberry’s seven points.
Tae Davis spearheaded the Irish attack in the second half, scoring 12 points over the first nine minutes. A quick Irish 8-0 run at 11:05 pulled Coach Shrewsberry’s squad to within one possession at 50-52.
Out of the media timeout Braeden Shrewsberry connected on a corner three and the Irish captured their first lead since the start of the contest when they were up 2-1.
However, Creighton quickly recaptured the lead and momentum by draining three consecutive triples to go up 61-53. Coach Shrewsberry immediately called a timeout and was soon called for a technical foul. Next, Creighton made both its free throws and its lead was back to 10.
J.R. Koneiczny converted a layup down on the offensive end, but then the Bluejays recorded their fourth three in less than four minutes, now 55-66.
Notre Dame kept fighting as a Garrett Sundra three brought it back to single digits at 5:19. Sundra later drained his third triple of the match with 3:14 remaining to get it down to 64-70.
Shrewsberry and Allocco got the Irish within five at 69-74. With 25.5 seconds left, Notre Dame had a chance to make it a one-possession game and Davis did just that with a layup. Davis’ bucket capped a Notre Dame 5-for-7 shooting stretch from the field.
On the ensuing play, Creighton made both its free throws and soon after Notre Dame’s three-point attempt fell short. The Bluejays then closed out the victory at 76-80.
UP NEXT
The Fighting Irish get less than 48 hours back in South Bend before they again have to hit the road to Athens, Georgia, for the SEC/ACC Challenge. Notre Dame will look to topple the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Texas outscored Butler by seven in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs only trailed by 10 at the midway point of the second quarter. The turning point of the game came moments after with Texas using an 8-0 scoring run to push their lead to 18.
The Longhorn scoring spree was fueled by Butler turnovers. Over 40 minutes, the ‘Dawgs turned it over 29 times which led to 39 Texas points. Points in the paint favored the visitors 54-34 and Texas would also add 22 points from the free throw line.
The third and final day of the tournament will feature #5 Texas playing #12 West Virginia in the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
IU INDY MEN’S BASKETBALL
JAGUARS MATCH PROGRAM RECORD WITH 19 TREYS IN 106-49 WIN OVER TRINITY CHRISTIAN
INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team made quick work of Trinity Christian College on Saturday (Nov. 30) in its final tune-up ahead of the start of Horizon League play. The Jaguars matched a program record with 19 made threes and delivered 28 assists on 39 field goals in an emphatic 106-49 victory. Jarvis Walker led six Jaguars in double-digits with 20 points and Paul Zilinskas added 15 points in the victory.
The Jags shot 58 percent from the floor and 19-of-37 (51.4 percent) from three while holding Trinity Christian to just 28 percent for the day.
The Jaguars built a quick 11-0 lead in the game’s first three-plus minutes, beginning with a Walker three and Zilinskas runner. The lead was 22-2 after Ron Rutland III, Sean Craig and Zilinskas made consecutive treys, less than seven minutes into the contest. Given the quick start, head coach Paul Corsaro was able to limit minutes, tinker with combinations and see his team respond with a massive offensive output.
“Everyone contributed and I thought we finished,” head coach Paul Corsaro said. “I thought the first half, we played 14 minutes of really good basketball. I thought, the last six minutes, we kind of lost our focus and didn’t really finish the half very well.”
“I challenged them at halftime to play a full 20 minutes in the second half and I thought they did that. We did not let up. We stayed relentless for almost the full 40 minutes and I thought we performed pretty cleanly on both sides.”
The Jags led by as many as 30 in the opening half before taking a 51-27 lead into intermission. After yielding a three on the opening possession of the second half, IU Indy (4-5) responded with a 17-0 run, sparked by back-to-back Walker threes. The production never dipped as the Jaguars continued to make at a high rate and often score on offensive rebounds when they did miss.
Eight different Jaguars had at least two assists as Alec Millender dished out a team-high seven assists in just 21 minutes. Zilinskas and Keenan Garner had four each as the Jaguars had 28 assists against just 10 turnovers.
“Everybody is happy when they’re all scoring and shots are going in,” Rutland III said. “Our defense really sparks our offense – getting stops and getting out in transition started all that.”
Garner had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench and DeSean Goode just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Rutland had a career-high 12 points, including three threes, and Timaris Brown added 12 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. Craig added eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
Tylan Harris led Trinity Christian (2-5) with 11 points and Kaden Eirhart contributed nine points.
The Jaguars will continue the homestand on Wednesday (Dec. 4) when they open Horizon League play against Green Bay inside the Jungle at 6:30 p.m. That game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) are on the call.
INDIANA STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL
SYCAMORES WIN GAME TWO IN NASSAU; PLAYS THIRD AND FINAL GAME ON SUNDAY AGAINST TARLETON STATE
NASSAU, Bahamas – Indiana State snapped a two-game skid with a win over Iona, 83-80, in its second game of the Baha Mar Hoops event to move to an even 4-4 on the season. The Sycamores are now 1-1 in the event.
The game started tight but Iona on three-straight possessions recorded a steal and a bucket that led into the first media timeout with the score 16-8 with 15:07 on the clock. The Sycamores recorded four total turnovers in that span but only three through the rest of the half.
The Sycamores found themselves in a 25-14 deficit but cut the lead to four, 26-22, right before the midpoint of the half. Jaden Daughtry made a layup, then Bruno Alocen followed with a triple coming out of the second media timeout. Almost a minute later in the next possession, Alocen knocked down another trey off an assist by Jayan Walker who just came on the floor to trail by four.
The Sycamores and Gaels exchanged two triples apiece on back-to-back-to-back-to-back possessions, with Camp Wagner and Josiah LeGree knocking in the two for Indiana State.
K’mani Doughty made a pair of free throws, then on the defensive end of the floor LeGree knocked the ball loose from a Gael that was picked up by Daughtry. LeGree was then rewarded by making a right-handed layup to give the Sycamores the 34-32 lead.
Iona then scored eight-straight to take back the lead 40-34 but two triples from Doughty and LeGree knotted the game at 40 before each team made a couple more baskets to have the game tied at 45-45 at the break.
An exchange of buckets started the second half, and Indiana State held a two-point, 57-55 lead just over five minutes in. Samage Teel and Daughtry each made a layup to put the Sycamores up five only for Iona to strike for a 9-0 run to go up 68-64 with 8:25 to play. Camp Wagner made a triple at the 8:02 mark for the last basket before the under-eight media timeout.
Wagner’s trey was the last basket until an Iona stepback jumper broke the scoring drought between the two teams. The jumper gave Iona a 70-67 advantage before Teel made a driving layup and LeGree recorded his first dunk of the season off an unselfish fastbreak assist by Doughty; that put the Sycamores up one, 71-70 with 3:46 remaining.
Both teams exchanged points, this time from the line. Alocen made two, Iona made two, then Daughtry made a pair all with 36 seconds of game time.
After the free throws, Teel and Alocen each scored at the rim in straight possessions to put the Sycamores up 79-72 with 52 seconds to play.
The Gaels made the last 22 seconds interesting, but the Sycamores answered each attack made by Iona. A triple at the 22-second mark by Iona cut the Indiana State lead down to four, but LeGree made a the front-end of a one-and-one to hold an 80-75 lead with 19 seconds left.
Iona grabbed the rebound off the second free throw and ran down to drain a three-pointer with 12 seconds left for an 80-78 ballgame in favor of Indiana State.
Teel made a free throw, followed by two Iona points from the line to make the game an 81-80 game with six seconds to play.
Doughty was fouled off the inbound pass and converted to clutch free throws to ice the game, and the last-second three-pointer by Iona was off the mark for Indiana State to earn the 83-80 victory.
K’mani Doughty led the Sycamores in scoring with 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting, making 6-of-7 from the line. Jaden Daughtry scored 16 points going 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe, grabbing six rebounds and three steals. Josiah LeGree finished with 14 points on 5-for-8 from the floor, pulling down four rebounds and four assists. Samage Teel scored 13 on 5-for-9 shooting with eight rebounds. Bruno Alocen rounds out the five in double figures with 12 points on 3-for-4 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line.

Indiana State recorded its fifth game of eight this season with 80+ points.
Saturday’s win was the best shooting performance for the Sycamores since Chicago State on November 22. The 52.9% from the field is the second-best shooting percentage of the season and the third-best from three and the free throw line.

SOUTHERN INDIANA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
EAGLES FINISH SWEEP IN PUERTO RICO CLASICO
BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball closed out the Puerto Rico Clasico with a victory over Le Moyne College, 71-42, Saturday morning to complete a two-game sweep in Puerto Rico.
The Screaming Eagles improved to an impressive 7-1 on the season following their sixth straight victory. USI also improved to 9-1 all time in overseas MTE games and 4-0 in games played in Puerto Rico. Le Moyne moved to 0-7 on the season after dropping both of its games in Puerto Rico.
Southern Indiana practically picked up where it left off from Friday’s game, jumping out in front early with the game’s first eight points. Graduate forward Meredith Raley and senior guard Vanessa Shafford split USI’s first eight tallies. Le Moyne found a spark with three made triples to draw back closer in the first quarter, but a solid finish to the opening frame with graduate forward Madi Webb scoring six points of USI’s final 10 points in the period led to an 18-11 USI lead after one.
The second quarter began much like the first, as USI’s defense forced long-distance shots from Le Moyne, and the Eagles continued to feed the paint. Southern Indiana led by 13, 24-11, three minutes into the second stanza, but the Dolphins’ three-point shooting brought them back to within three, 24-21, with under four minutes left in the first half. USI created turnovers on defense and had a good mix of inside and outside play on offense to produce a 12-2 run to take a 36-23 lead into the half.
The second half began with the two teams battling back and forth, but the balanced attack from the Eagles continued to generate positive results. Junior guard Ali Saunders and Shafford impressed in the period with each scoring 10-plus and 21 of USI’s 23 points in the third quarter. The two combined to go 5-5 from beyond the arc in the third. Southern Indiana finished the third with a 26-point advantage, 59-33.
It took about four minutes into the fourth quarter for either side to register a made field goal, but then sophomore guard Sophia Loden went on to score the Screaming Eagles’ first eight points in the quarter to extend USI’s lead to over 30 points, 67-34, with four minutes left on the clock. Southern Indiana’s defense sealed the win by holding Le Moyne to only nine points and two made field goals in the final 10 minutes of action.
Southern Indiana shot over 50 percent for the second consecutive game and nearly shot 50 percent from three with eight connections from outside. Shafford led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Saunders recorded 16 points on a perfect 7-7 afternoon from the floor with five boards and six assists. Webb added 10 points.
The Eagles’ defense limited the Dolphins to below 27 percent shooting overall and 20 percent from three. Le Moyne had one player reach double figures.
Following a return to the USI campus for a couple of days, the Screaming Eagles will take their winning streak to Bloomington, Indiana Wednesday evening and take on Indiana University. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT from Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The game can be seen on Big Ten Plus and heard on The Spin 95.7 FM and WREF 97.7 FM.

A strong start to the game forced a timeout from North Dakota less than four minutes in, as the Beacons opened on a 9-2 run — featuring seven points from fifth-year Leah Earnest (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH).
A 3-pointer from senior Katie Beyer (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) extended Valpo’s lead to eight points before North Dakota ended the quarter with a 10-2 run to even the score at 14-14 through the opening 10 minutes.
The Fighting Hawks hit a 3-pointer on their first possession of the second quarter, but Valpo limited UND to just one free throw over the next four minutes, allowing the Beacons to go on a 12-1 run — led by five points by sophomore Nevaeh Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) — to pull out to a 26-18 lead.
Another triple from Jackson gave Valpo a double-digit lead for the first time with 3:18 to play in the first half, and the Beacons eventually took a 36-28 lead into halftime. Valpo went 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 from the foul line for a 22-point second quarter, scoring 13 of those points off of 11 North Dakota turnovers.
Halftime did little to slow the Beacons’ momentum offensively. Valpo scored on each of its first four possessions of the second half — a drive and finish from sophomore Raeven Raye-Redmond (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood Madison), free throws from Earnest and back-to-back 3-pointers by junior Maci Rhoades (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek [Radford]) and Jackson — to push its lead to 46-30 and force a timeout from the Fighting Hawks.
North Dakota dropped the lead to 12 just past the halfway mark of the third quarter, but Valpo outscored UND 11-5 over the remainder of the frame, capped by a short jumper by Beyer which beat the buzzer to give the Beacons a 60-42 edge with 10 minutes to play. Valpo went 8-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, in the third quarter and assisted on all eight baskets while committing just two turnovers.
Beyer continued her strong afternoon by scoring Valpo’s first five points of the fourth quarter, in the process pushing the lead up over the 20-point mark. A runner from freshman Lexi Castator (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) with 6:41 to play pushed the Beacons’ lead to its apex at 23, and the Fighting Hawks got no closer than 16 the rest of the way.
Inside the Game
The story of the game was the Beacons’ ability to force turnovers and capitalize off of the Fighting Hawks’ miscues. North Dakota committed 26 turnovers, the second straight game Valpo’s opponent has turned it over 26 times.
Remarkably, Valpo then turned those turnovers into 33 points on the offensive end, finishing the game with a 33-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The 33 points off turnovers, the +24 edge in that category and the 26 turnovers forced are all single-game highs since Feb. 22, 2020 at Loyola, when Valpo was 38-4 in points off turnovers after forcing 31 Rambler miscues.
It was a total team effort to force the North Dakota turnovers. 11 of those miscues were Beacon steals, but no single player had more than two steals and seven different players had at least one theft.
Valpo is forcing an MVC-best 21 turnovers/game from its opponents on the season.
Offensively, the Beacons featured balance as well, with four players finishing in double figures in the scoring column. It is the third time already this season Valpo has had four players score 10+ points in the same game after entering the year not having done so since Feb. 2023.
Leading the way in the scoring department was Earnest with a game-high 18 points. The grad student also paced all players with eight rebounds and six assists — the latter tying her career high — while registering a career-best three blocked shots as well.
Earnest is one of just two D-I players to reach all four of those marks in the same game this season and is the first Valpo player to do so in at least 15 years.
Earnest moved up to 12th in program history in career scoring during Saturday’s win, surpassing Aimee Forsman on that chart. She is just 18 points away from cracking Valpo’s all-time top-10 in the category.
Beyer scored in double digits for the third time this season, coming off the bench with a career-high 16 points.
Jackson connected on four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points, scoring in double digits for the sixth straight game. The sophomore dished out a trio of assists as well.
Rounding out the double-figure scoring quartet was Rhoades, who scored 10 points for the second time in the Valpo uniform, going 4-of-7 from the field.
Valpo’s shooting percentages across the board were its highest of the season. The Beacons broke the 50% mark from the field for the first time this year, hitting 52.0% from the floor, and hit at a 43.5% clip from deep, knocking down 10 triples. They were 14-for-17 (82.4%) from the foul line as well.
After allowing its first four D-I opponents of the year to hit at a 48.9% clip from the 3-point line and average 11 3-pointers/game, Valpo limited North Dakota to 3-of-19 shooting from deep Saturday.
Valpo did all this despite only one player hitting the 30-minute mark on Saturday, only two players playing more than 25 minutes and 10 players seeing at least 10 minutes of action.
One notable streak did come to an end Saturday, as the Fighting Hawks ended the matchup with a narrow 34-32 advantage in points in the paint, snapping the Beacons’ streak of five consecutive games with the advantage inside — the first time they had put together a stretch of games like that since 2010.
Thoughts From Coach Evans
“I thought it was a good day — it was the most consistent 40-minute performance we’ve had this year, both from an offensive and a defensive perspective.”
“A big part of our defensive game plan was to be aggressive with our switching — North Dakota has a dribble drive oriented offense, and so we wanted to be really aggressive and take them out of that. We did a really good job of doing that, turning them back into more ball screens on the perimeter and making them try to force the ball inside with passes with us fronting the bigs.”
“We ran our offense today with great tempo. For the most part, we were organized — we were sprinting to screens and off screens, we were working the whole width of the floor, we moved the ball side-to-side, we got multiple drives on possessions. We really shared the ball well.”
“We’ve preached trusting each other and playing as one team, and today was a really good representation of the things we’ve been talking about. We had balance scoring, with three starters and one player off the bench in double figures. We were able to spread our minutes really well across the board, which is important when you’re facing back-to-back games. More than that, though, everyone who got in came in and did something positive with their minutes. They played within themselves, really focused on playing great defense and sticking to our game plan offensively.”

FOOTBALL HISTORY
Heisman winners
December 1, 1936 – The 2nd Heisman Trophy ever awarded went to Yale’s brilliant End Larry Kelley. Actually according to Heisman.com the trophy given to Kelley was the first one to bear the name of the Heisman Memorial Trophy. The initial 1935 award was called the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy. Another first in this case was that Larry Kelley was the first time the award went to a pass catching end. The 1936 season for the 6’-1” end was remarkable as he caught 17 passes for 372 yards and 15 scores, while on defense he had one interception. https://www.heisman.com/heisman-winners/larry-kelley/
December 1, 1951 – The 17th Heisman Trophy Award went to Dick Kazmaier, Princeton halfback. Dick led all players in the nation in total offense in 1951 with his gaudy 827 yards, 22 TDs and incredible .626 passing percentage. After the incredible 1951 season the United Press named him Player of the Year and Kazmaier also won the Maxwell Trophy. Dick Kazmaier was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1966.
December 1, 1956 – Legion Field, Birmingham – At the 21st Iron Bowl Classic it was those Auburn Tigers who won as they outscored the Crimson Tide of Alabama 34-7 per bhamwiki.com.
December 1, 1956 – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium- Norman, Oklahoma – Powered by the running Oklahoma’s star halfback Tommy McDonald the Sooners blanked their rival Oklahoma State 53-0 to finish a perfect season. They did not accept a bowl game bid but did win the National title. They finished 10-0 for their 3rd straight year, continuing what ended up being an NCAA record 47 game unbeaten streak.
December 1, 1959 – The 25th Heisman Trophy Award belonged to halfback Billy Cannon of LSU. If the name rings a bell it’s because we just talked about him yesterday on November 30 History Headlines when he was the first pick in the 1959 NFL Draft. What a two day span that was in his young life! Heisman.com informs us that Billy had rare size and speed. He could consistently run a 100-yard dash in 9.5 seconds and, at 6-1, 210 pounds, he had the size to run over defenders as well as run past them. Cannon was a big part of the 1959 National Champion LSU Tigers success. Bill ended up playing professionally in the AFL with the Oilers and Raiders and in the NFL with the Chiefs.
Iron & Grey
December 1, 1962 – Legion Field, Birmingham – The 27th Iron Bowl took place and this time once again it was the Alabama eleven that blanked Auburn 38-0 for their fourth straight shutout of the Tigers in the series according to onthisday.com.
December 1, 1962 – Exhibition Stadium, Toronto – The Fog Bowl – The 50th Grey Cup game was played on this date and featured the Winnipeg Blue Bombers coached by a guy by the name of Bud Grant, who later led the Minnesota Vikings to many big seasons versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Check out Davis of TrulytheGOATs podcast presenting this great Grey Cup game on today’s podcast above. Also see our accompanying December 1 post by Ninety-nine Yards.com when he tells of the other great Grey Cup matchups on this date.
Iron Bowls and Heisman winners galore!
December 1, 1973 – Per onthisday.com the 38th Iron Bowl might sound like a broken record but the fact is that Alabama beat Auburn with another shutout victory, this time 35-0 in Birmingham.
December 1, 1979 – We had a great matchup in the 44th Iron Bowl. Alabama’s Crimson Tide outlasted the Tigers of Auburn 25-18 at old Legion Field in Birmingham.
December 1, 1980 – The website Heisman.com informs us the 1980 award of the 46th Heisman Memorial Trophy belonged to South Carolina’s George Rogers. The big running back had a remarkable season as he ran for a nation’s-best 1,781 yards while punching in 14 touchdowns. In the 1981 NFL Draft he was the top overall pick of the draft by the New Orleans Saints. He also played with the Washington Redskins in the NFL and even won a Super Bowl with them.
December 1, 1984 – Boston College Quarterback Doug Flutie was announced as the Heisman Memorial Trophy winner for the 1984 season per Heisman.com. Some say he was undersized to be successful but he proved them all wrong as he not only won the coveted award but became the first career college passer to eclipse the 10,000 yard mark! As a matter of fact the season prior in 1983 Flutie was third in the voting to win the Heisman. His senior season though he would not be denied the award as he passed for 3,454 yards and 27 touchdowns. Doug Flutie went on to have a great professional career in both the CFL and the NFL for multiple teams.
December 1, 1984 – Legion Field, Birmingham – 49th Iron Bowl will unfortunately always be remembered for a snafu from one of the game’s star players as much as it was for the great sports spectacle that it was. In the 1982 Iron Bowl Bo Jackson was the hero as he went over the top for the winning score. Bo in 1984 was not so much the game’s hero. According to AL.com with 3:27 to play and Auburn trailing 17-15, the ball went to running back Brent Fullwood on that fourth-and-goal play from the 1. Jackson, who misheard the call, ran left while the play went right, without a lead blocker, Fullwood was run out of bounds by an Alabama defender short of the goal line. The Tide held on as the final score was Alabama 17 Auburn 15 and the game has been remembered as “Wrong Way Bo.”
December 1, 1990 – The 56th winner of the Heisman Trophy Award was Ty Detmer the great quarterback from Brigham Young University. His 15,031 career passing yards and 121 touchdowns show he was one of the best college QBs ever. As a matter of fact he is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in college football history. The website bio from footbalfoundation.org states that he won a Heisman Trophy, a Maxwell Award, two Davey O’Brien Awards and at one time held 59 NCAA records! The National Football Foundation selected Ty Detmer to enter into their College Football Hall of Fame in 2012. Ty was a late selection of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and in the NFL he played for a total of 14 seasons with the Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons.
December 1, 1990 – Legion Field, Birmingham – The 55th Iron Bowl was one of the more memorable ones. The Tigers had entered this game claiming victory in the four previous contests against Alabama on the gridiron. Top moments in this game according to si.com were Tide kicker Phillip Doyle booting three field goals and the Alabama offense rolling the dice and going for a fourth and one from midfield. It was a tight game so those plays mattered when both defenses were playing so well. Alabama outlasted Auburn 16-7 for end the Tigers winning streak against them.
Marino sets another record
December 1, 1991 – Joe Robbie Stadium, Miami, Florida – Dolphins legendary Quarterback Dan Marino set an NFL record when he made it to 3,000 yards passing in a season for the 8th time in his career during Dolphin’s 33-14 win over the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers per MiamiDolphins.com.
Voice of Officiating
December 1, 2000 – The National Football League selected veteran official Mike Pereira as the Director of Officiating of the League. Mike stepped down from his duties at NFL Head Quarters in 2010 and since then he has been the NFL on Fox expert on all things officiating.
SEC Championship 2007
December 1, 2007 – 16th SEC Championship Game #5 LSU versus #14 Tennessee. This was a great matchup of ranked teams in the country playing for the SEC title, who could have asked for more? ESPN.com has a great story on the game and describes the turning point for LSU was when Jonathan Zenon picked off a pass and took it 18-yards for a touchdown with 9:54 left in the game to rally LSU from a 14-13 deficit. That play was the difference as the Tigers knocked off the Vols 21-14.
2007 ACC Championship
December 1, 2007 – 3rd ACC Championship Game was another great game on the bill as #6 Virginia Tech faced #12 Boston College. The American Football Database gives us the insight that at the half, the two teams battled to a 16–16 tie. The halftime adjustments were just what the Hokies needed as they came out of the locker room and not only shut down the Eagles offense but put two additional scores of their own on the board. Final score was 30-16 in favor of Virginia Tech.
2007 Big 12 Championship
December 1, 2007 – The 12th Big 12 Championship Game was the top billed game of the day of conference championships as #9 Oklahoma took on #1 in the nation Missouri. Rockmnation.com has the details on the game that had The Sooners upsetting Mizzou 38-17.
2012 SEC Championship
December 1, 2012 – #2 Alabama faced off against #3 Georgia in the 2012 SEC Championship Game, which the 21st one held for the conference. According to SBNation.com the game came down to the last seconds as the Bulldogs caught a tipped pass in bounds at about the five yard line but couldn’t stop the clock. Had the receiver not caught the pass they probably could have had one more play. Hindsight is always 20-20 and heck when a wide out see a catchable ball he tries to catch it. The Tide rolled 32-28 for a chance at the National Championship. And that they did as Alabama blanked their long time rivals LSU 21-0 to win it all a few weeks after getting past the late Georgia scare.
Hall of Fame Birthday for December 1
December 1, 1902 – Ordiliia, Washington – Morris “Red” Badgro the legendary USC end arrived on scene of life. First stop was in football as Red Badgro played with Red Grange on the NY Yankees football team. After one season on the gridiron he played a couple years on the diamond with baseball’s St. Louis Browns. His love for football was too much though as 1930 saw him back in pads playing for the New York Giants. The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined Red Badgro in 1991.
December 1, 1931 – Sheffield, Pennsylvania – Steve Eisenhauer the great tackle/guard for the U.S. Naval Academy was born. The Bio on this great player on footballfoundation.org tells us that the National Football Foundation selected Steve Eisenhauer to enter into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.
December 1, 1938 – Washington D.C. – Legendary Duke University guard Mike McGee came into this life. The voters of the NFF selected Mike McGee to be inducted into their College Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
December 1, 1971 – Atlanta, Georgia – Rob Waldrop the defensive tackle from the University of Arizona was born. The National Football Foundation selected Rob Waldrop to enter into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
